Guide to Virtual College Tour Websites

virginia tech virtual tour youvisit

The college visit is a longtime tradition where rising sophomores and juniors get in a car or board a plane with their parents and visit prospective college campuses. Since the outbreak of COVID, virtual college tours have become more prominent. Today, they continue to stay relevant as students who can’t travel to colleges for reasons such as distance, finances, or illness can easily access college tours virtually.

Virtual college tours help you decide which universities you want to apply to when it’s time. They also allow you to eliminate schools which might not be a good fit. To guide you through the journey, we’ve provided information on why virtual college tours are important and where to find virtual campus visits.

Why Are Virtual College Tours Important?

To make sure you don’t make a rash decision and apply to a college that won’t support your interests and goals, you need to get a sense of a campus’ setting, its resources, faculty, major offerings and more. Through a virtual visit, you can not only see the different parts of campus and its academic and recreational facilities, you can also learn from a virtual tour guide—usually a current student—about what makes each of the resources unique, and why their school might a good one to add to your list.

Websites That Offer Virtual College Tours

If you’ve decided that you do want to attend virtual college tours but you aren’t familiar with how to get started with attending a campus visit, don’t panic. You don’t have to contact every single school’s admissions office and ask them how to arrange for one. There are several websites that allow you to tour and compare almost every college and university in the United States. These tour sites provide you with interactive maps, photos, videos, and testimonials so that you don’t miss out on any of the experience of a real life tour. Some of the most effective and popular places for virtual college tours are:

  • YouVisit: Arguably the most popular virtual tour site, YouVisit ’s interface is aesthetically pleasing, user friendly, and packed with 600 campuses for you to visit. Each campus features a current student as your online guide who walks you through what makes the different parts of campus unique to that particular college. YouVisit tours also offer prompts that pop up asking students for any input or questions that are then sent to college officials directly. This helps the website improve and add more information on what students would like to know and want added to future tours.
  • CampusTours: CampusTours is one of the most popular sites for visiting a campus from the comfort of your home. Its advanced search feature allows students to specify exactly what they’re looking for out of the college experience, such as their desired tuition amount or location. Most campuses you can visit through this website also give you access to insights from current undergraduates. Like YouVisit, CampusTours offers a feature that enables visitors to ask questions while they are on the tour that directly go to college officials to provide you with a similar experience of an in-person visit.
  • Appily: If you have a list of specific criteria that you want the schools on your list to match, Appily offers a useful tool. The site allows you to narrow your searches according to different criteria that you might prefer such as location, major, and student body size. You can eliminate schools you wouldn’t be interested in by applying filters like “suburb,” “midsize” and “computer engineering” and tour campuses that include exactly what you are looking for.
  • CampusReel: Although not exactly a virtual tour site, CampusReel is a good place to check out during the college search process, as its database contains over 15,000 student-generated videos offering you multiple perspectives on campuses. Each school’s page is divided into different categories, such as “dorm room tour,” “weather and seasons,” and “social life.” While you won’t be controlling the visit with the click of your own computer, these students will take you on personal tours of their residence halls and academic buildings in order to give you a picture of what campus life is like.

As you build your college list and visit campuses virtually, make sure you take notes of what stands out to you, as well as ask questions to campus representatives so that you can gain a better understanding of whether the school is right for you. You can also take advantage of online tools and screenshot, bookmark, and screen record different parts of the tour. Happy touring!

Virginia Tech: College Tour Tips and Itinerary

Planning to take a tour of Virginia Tech with your child this summer? Learn what to expect from your time on campus and discover fun ways to make your day trip to Blacksburg, VA one to remember.

A prospective student stands outside the Virginia Tech stadium.

This summer my oldest daughter and I are hitting the road to visit college campuses throughout the south east.

While we live in Charlotte, NC, we are considering schools both in and out of state.

Our first trip of the summer was a day trip to visit Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA–an easy 3 hour drive from Charlotte.

I’m sharing all my tips and tricks and a peek inside the tour to help you and your student navigate a college tour of your own. But don’t miss my general college tour tips here, too!

Getting There

Virginia Tech For parking for your college tour, you’ll add this address to your GPS: 901 Prices Fork Road Blacksburg, VA

For more general directions on how to get there, Virginia Tech has a very helpful page here.

If you’re starting from the south side of Charlotte, NC like we did, plan for about 3 hours in the car. The worst traffic we hit was just getting over the north side of Charlotte by Huntersville. It was smooth sailing after that.

Register for Your Tour Before You Go

Virginia Tech offers virtual tours, like so many colleges and universities now do.

However, if you want to see campus in person, take part in an information session with an admissions officer, and get a guided tour with a student guide, you’ll want to register for a campus visit before you go.

Be sure to sign up with one of their open dates, you can find all the information you’ll need to register here .

A mom and daughter visiting Virginia Tech.

Once you’ve registered as an official visitor, they will send you all the details you need once you arrive on campus.

During our visit, we were asked to park at the The Inn at Virginia Tech and sent a printable parking pass to put in our car dashboard so we didn’t have to pay a parking fee.

You’ll park near the Visitor and Undergraduate Admissions Center which is up a small hill. You’ll spot the staircase next to this statue of the Hokie Bird:

A statue of the VT Hokie bird outside the visitor center on campus.

Our Itinerary

We left home in Charlotte at 8 am so we could arrive in Blacksburg, VA by 11 am.

We drove through downtown Blacksburg and past the university so we had a better sense of where we’d have to park for the tour.

Then the rest of the day went as follows:

  • Buy Donuts at Carol Lee: Save them for the drive home.
  • Have Lunch in Downtown Blacksburg
  • Campus Tour at 1:30 pm
  • Visit the Bookstore After the Tour
  • Take Pictures
  • Drive Around Campus
  • Head Home: We got home around 8pm

Information Session

Be sure to arrive at your parking spot early so you are not late for your information session and tour.

Once you’ve parked, head up to the Admissions center and check in with the team at the front desk.

The lobby is filled with interesting displays of the historical facts about the university.

You’ll be assigned an information session with an admissions officer who will present the basic information you need for applying to Virginia Tech.

This is an excellent place to ask any general questions you have about the admissions process. The presentation lasted about 30 minutes.

Walking Tour

After the information session, you’ll be lead down the hill towards a campus tour guide for your walking tour of the campus.

During our visit, the walk was gentle and easy and did not involve any stairs or difficult inclines.

There is a spot on the website to request an accessibility-friendly tour when you register if that is a concern for your family.

The walking tour lasted for about an hour and a half and covered about 1 mile on campus.

NOTE: If you visit campus during summer, be prepared for construction projects throughout campus. They expedite these “spruce-ups” during the times when students are home for the summer.

The outside of Burruss Hall is covered in scaffolding as it undergoes a surface update.

We walked through the heart of the university past major landmarks on campus including:

  • Burruss Hall
  • Torgersen Hall
  • The Pylons and War Memorial
  • The Drill Field
  • Newman Library
  • The Bookstore

An inside view of Torgersen Hall shows red couches and tables.

The only buildings we entered during the the tour was a peek at the lobby of the chemistry building, the Newman library, and a brief hallway tour of Torgersen Hall.

Our guide pointed out the dormitories and dining facilities along the way.

If it is important for you to see the inside of these things, be sure to ask your tour guide about how to make that happen.

The 8 pillars of the warm memorial on Virginia Tech's campus.

Our tour guide was an extremely recent graduate (she just graduated 2 weeks ago) and so very helpful during our tour.

She wore a microphone headset so that the entire group was able to hear her narration and she stopped for questions every several minutes.

We ended the tour at the Pylons, in the center of the campus, and she stayed for 30 more minutes to answer any additional questions and offered suggestions for where to head next on our own.

Where to Eat

If you plan to eat before or after your tour, there are several places to eat near the university.

Two pizzas on a table inside The Cellar restaurant in Blacksburg, VA.

I wanted to share a special meal with my daughter somewhere just off campus since it was our first college tour together but it could make for a really interesting experience to eat like the students do right on campus.

We chose to visit The Cellar which is in Downtown Blacksburg, a very easy 8 minute walk from the university bookstore.

The menu had a little something for everyone: pizza, sandwiches, salads, fresh specials, and tons of appetizers.

We arrived starving and every plate of food brought out from the kitchen looked amazing .

Our server recommended the pesto chicken pizza as one of their more popular dishes. (See photo above.) My daughter picked that and I was extremely jealous. I’d definitely order that next time. My gyro pizza was good but didn’t come close to hers.

As luck would have it, our server was also a very recent graduate of Virginia Tech. Once she heard we were going on tour, she bubbled over for 10 minutes about how it was the best experience of her life and she just wanted to spend one last summer there before heading on to graduate school in the fall.

She was a fountain of great advice, so be sure to chat up to the people you meet around campus!

On-Campus Dining Halls

If you really want to get a feel for student life, our tour guide mentioned it was possible to eat in one of the student dining halls during your visit.

Be sure to ask them for more information if this is of interest to you!

8 Things to Do During Your Visit

The 2 hours of your information session and tour are just 1 part of your day at Virginia Tech. Be sure to plan for some extra time before or after your tour so you can experience more than the area offers your student.

1. Visit the Bookstore

If your teen is anything like my kiddo, a visit to the campus bookstore is a Must-Do. We purchased a t-shirt for her to enjoy wearing between now and her final decision, it will also possibly come in handy for our decision day announcement in the spring.

A prospective student visits the Virginia Tech bookstore.

2. Check out Lane Stadium

If you have a student athlete or marching band kid, you’ll want to make time to drive or walk over to the football stadium on campus.

While not part of the official tour itself, Lane Stadium is easy to find and very impressive to see.

3. Stroll by Duck Pond

Very close to the drill field, Duck Pond is a popular student hang-out spot and was voted “most romantic date spot” for picnics, etc.

4. Drive through Greek Village

If your student is interested in rushing a fraternity or sorority, you can find all the Greek housing nestled together just off campus behind the golf course.

5. Take a Student Photo

Once we bought my daughter’s VT tee, she changed into it so we could take an on-campus picture to potentially use in her announcement later next spring.

I’m saving all the campus pics in an album on my phone for easy grabbing when the time comes.

NOTE: This was my daughter’s idea, not my own. If you think your child would feel way too much pressure with this, skip it! They don’t need any more stress placed on their shoulders. For us, there was just a simple feeling of excitement and potential and hope surrounding that pic. We know she’s an awesome kid who will land some place that is the right fit. Maybe that will be Virginia Tech, maybe not.

6. Walk Through Downtown Blacksburg

There are several shops and restaurants down the cute main street that is Downtown Blacksburg.

You can easily walk there from the bookstore or you can drive over there and park your car in on-street parking.

7. Visit the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market

If you’re in town on Wednesday, there is a local farmer’s market near campus that would make for a fun visit.

Unfortunately for us, the timing didn’t work out. The market opens at 2pm and we were ready to head off campus. You can get all the details you need for your visit here .

8. Visit Carol Lee Donuts

When I was researching things to add to our itinerary, I discovered that Blacksburg is home to a donut shop that was listed among the “ Top 100 Donut Shops in the Country ” by Yelp’s online community.

We were not about to spend 6 hours in the car and be that close to a best donut shop and not stop in!

The photo collage shows the donuts and outside of the donut shop.

Carol Lee Donuts is a very tiny donut shop just a couple minutes off campus by car. They have very limited hours so we made it our first stop of the day once we arrived.

We bought a half dozen donuts in a variety of flavors, they were already picked over by 11 am when we arrived! We tried to select flavors that wouldn’t melt in the car heat and saved them as a special end-of-day treat for the drive home.

When I asked for the Toasted Coconut donut, our server mentioned it was specifically chosen at the Best Donut in Virginia. I can totally see why. It was absolutely amazing — light and fluffy, glazed all over, with perfectly crispy toasted coconut on top. Worth the visit for that alone!

Final Thoughts

My daughter and I had the best time during our day trip to Blacksburg, VA together. This was the first of several college campus tours we have planned for the summer and I’m already looking forward to the next one.

Virginia Tech blew us away and we fell in love with the campus and the amazing list of student activities she could participate in.

Every single person we met that mentioned they were a recent grad expressed a huge amount of love for their school.

The in-person tour helped the university move up several notches on her list of favorites and she is eagerly looking forward to applying this fall.

Virtual college tours are an excellent alternative to in-person visits. Virtual tours allow you to explore college campuses at your own pace, typically with useful features like 360° views and student-narrated audio/video. In fact, you will often see and learn much more during a virtual tour than is possible through an in-person tour, given the size of many campuses and the time constraints of a visit to the admissions office.

For each school on our list, you'll find one or more virtual tours that take you around campus and into academic buildings, residence halls, and athletic facilities.

Boston College

Despite its name, Boston College is not located in Boston. The 175-acre main campus in Chestnut Hill sits a little over 6 miles from downtown. The attractive campus features collegiate Gothic architecture and sits on a hill overlooking the Chestnut Hill Reservoir.

Online: For 360° views of buildings, athletic and performance venues, and dining areas, check out the BC virtual tour at eCampusTours.com . For a more personal experience, CampusReel offers a range of videos shot by BC students as they tell you about their campus.

Boston University

Located on an urban campus in the Fenway neighborhood, Boston University is home to one of the largest residence halls in the country, as well as beautiful green spaces along the Charles River. From contemporary towers to historic brownstones, the university's architecture is truly diverse.

Online: Boston University has an excellent collection of over 40 videos narrated by students that provide a window into academic life, residential life, and campus life.

Brown University

As one of the prestigious Ivy League schools , admission to Brown University is extremely selective. The campus in Providence, Rhode Island, features attractive red brick buildings and a hilltop location. The highly ranked Rhode Island School of Art and Design adjoins the campus.

Online: On the admissions website, you'll find an excellent 360° tour of Brown created in collaboration with YouVisit. Brown students guide you around campus and narrate different aspects of the university experience.

Columbia University

As a member of the Ivy League located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, Columbia University can be an excellent choice for strong students looking for an urban college experience. Barnard College sits adjacent to the Columbia campus.

Online : The university partnered with YouVisit to create a virtual walking tour of the campus narrated by Columbia students. You'll learn about 19 locations on campus and see dozens of high quality photos. For a less professionally produced view of campus, check out the many student-created videos on CampusReel .

Cornell University

Another Ivy League school, Cornell University has an enviable location in the Finger Lakes region of Central New York. The large hillside campus sits in the middle of wine country overlooking Lake Cayuga. In addition, Ithaca frequently ranks among the best college towns in the nation.

Online: The university has a professionally made video, Cornell University: Glorious to View , that features scenes from around campus and soundbites from faculty and students. You can also check out Cornell's interactive map with photos and information on dozens of locations around campus. Finally, take a look on CampusReel for some amateur videos by Cornell students .

Dartmouth College

Another highly selective member of the Ivy League, Dartmouth College is located in the quintessential college town of Hanover, New Hampshire. The iconic bell tower of Baker Library soars above the school's attractive buildings and open green spaces.

Online : The Dartmouth admissions website has links to some excellent resources including a 360-degree virtual tour with YouVisit and virtual tours of athletic facilities and the School of Engineering. While surrounded by beauty, the campus itself was named by Travel & Leisure as one of the ugliest in the country because of its mishmash of architectural styles. How to Choose Colleges With Virtual Tours

A guide to some of the tour sites that aim to help students feel as if they are walking around campuses without leaving home.

virginia tech virtual tour youvisit

By Donna De La Cruz

With college campuses closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, free virtual tours have grown in popularity . High school juniors hoping to begin college in the fall of 2021 are not able to visit campuses in person, but they and their families have many ways to explore their options while staying safe at home.

Here is a guide to some of the tour sites that aim to help students feel as if they are walking around campuses. They can visit as many colleges as they like, without the cost of a road trip or the aching feet.

If you are just getting started on the college admissions process:

The National Association for College Admission Counseling provides information from more than 1,000 colleges and universities on changes to admissions processes resulting from the pandemic. The tool lets students get an overview of resources available at each institution, including links to virtual tours offered, said the association’s president, Jayne Caflin Fonash. “If someone only wants to know about schools in a certain state, or is only interested in finding out about standardized testing policies for the fall, they can drill down to get that information,” Dr. Fonash said.

StriveScan is offering the Strive Virtual College Exploration program through May 8 to take the place of in-person college fairs. Students get advice on how to write a college essay, apply for financial aid, and the chance to ask questions to officials from more than 450 colleges from 45 states and 13 countries — Canada, Britain, Ireland, Italy, France, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Belgium, Australia and Mexico. All sessions are taped, allowing students to download them. StriveScan’s president, Dan Saavedra, said more presentations will be held in the coming weeks, including one focusing on STEM schools and another on small, private liberal arts schools.

If you are ready to start touring:

There are several websites that allow students to tour and compare schools. These sites offer interactive maps, photos, videos and testimonials.

CampusTours offers tours of more than 1,800 schools in the United States as well as tours of schools in the United Kingdom, Canada, China and France. Its advanced search feature allows students to fine-tune details they are searching for, such as how much tuition they want to pay. About 100 schools offer insights from enrolled students during parts of the tour on campus life, the company’s president, Christopher Carson, said. CampusTours is also working on a feature to allow students to ask questions while they are on the tour that are sent to college officials, he added.

YouVisit offers tours of more than 600 U.S. schools. The tours offer prompts that pop up asking students for input that is sent to college officials to respond, an attempt to replicate the questions and answers that come up during in-person tours. YouVisit also offers students to tour using “virtual reality” tools. “There is nothing that replaces that in-person experience that makes a student fall in love with a campus, but the goal of a virtual tour is to do as much as it can to replace those moments,” said Emily Bauer, vice president for agency services for EAB, the education research and technology company that owns YouVisit.

If you want to attend a Historically Black College or University:

The Chicago HBCU Alumni Alliance is offering virtual fairs in which nearly 50 H.B.C.U.s give students information on admissions, programs and scholarships. Videotapes of the events will be available on the alliance’s website in the coming weeks. The alliance’s president, Danielle James, said more virtual fairs are planned for the summer.

StriveScan also featured presentations from several H.B.C.U.s.

Other virtual tour sites include:

YoUniversity : Students can click on tabs such as “safest campuses,” “most diverse campuses” and “top academic colleges,” as well as “best campus food” and “coolest dorms.”

CampusReel : Students enrolled at colleges can upload their videos to this site for sharing, after being vetted. Students or parents must register to join.

If you want to take a gap year:

The Gap Year Association offers videos on what it means to take a gap year and is building a new student membership platform — a nominal fee will be required to join — that will give students access to weekly calls to learn about gap year opportunities, said the association’s executive director, Ethan Knight. The website also offers information on accredited gap year programs and counselors.

If you want to play sports in college:

Virtual tours, like the ones at YouVisit , can put students in the stands or on the playing field to get a simulated experience of being an athlete there. CampusTours has a feature that lets students find sports offered at various schools.

After you’ve narrowed down your list:

This is the time to start making personal outreach to schools, Mr. Carson of CampusTours said. “You can’t rely on virtual tours to tell you everything about the institution, you need to reach out to the schools themselves.” Traditionally, students have been told that some colleges rank in-person visits as a show of “demonstrated interest.” This year that could take different forms, like emailing professors and admissions officers or attending Zoom meetings. “Demonstrated interest is very valuable,” Mr. Carson said. “Make personalized phone calls and write emails.”

Was hast du denn schon gebaut, wo gibt es Probleme. Vielleicht helfen uns Fotos.
Baue immernoch an meinem riesen flugzeug.

@stevo gugg kmal hier http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...MEWA:IT&ih=002 Gruss Dirk

Tja Kai, dann gib doch endlich mal Gas!

Nice! That is great looking quality hull, unlike some of China junk sold over here.

Good hull. Used to be a hull from the German comp. named "Hopf". They then sold the forms to Graupner. The original Hopf hull was with a single cockpit.

F1 Russian Grand Prix moving to St Petersburg from 2023

Sochi's olympic park has hosted the race for the last seven years..

graupner formel 1 rennboot

  • Reflects Liberty Media's desire to bring F1 to destination cities
  • New race to take place at Igora Drive

Formula One has announced that the Russian Grand Prix will move to St Petersburg from 2023.

Sochi’s Olympic Park has staged the race for the past seven years after former series chief Bernie Ecclestone struck a deal with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

But the Grand Prix will be relocated from the much-maligned Sochi to Igora Drive – 30 miles outside St Petersburg – the year after next.

The move fits Liberty Media’s desire to take the sport to destination cities and comes after Formula One announced earlier this year that Formula One will race in Miami in 2022.

  • F1’s British GP to allow 140,000 fans

'Formula One is delighted to confirm that the Russian Grand Prix will move to the Autodrom Igora Drive in St Petersburg from 2023,' read a statement from the series.

'We are looking forward to racing in a hugely exciting location that includes ten professional tracks for racing and testing over approximately 100 hectares.

'It is located 54km from Saint Petersburg, was designed by German architect Hermann Tilke and in 2020 received its FIA Grade One licence.

'We will be providing more details on the race in the coming months and we are looking forward to racing in Sochi for the next two years.'

Formula One has also decided to add the Turkish Grand Prix back to the 2021 calendar, with the race at Intercity Istanbul Park replacing the Singapore Grand Prix on the first weekend in October.

The race will take place at Sochi for two more years before moving.

"The Bronze Horseman"

The Bronze Horseman, an impressive monument to the founder of St Petersburg, Peter the Great , stands on Senatskaia Ploshchad (Square), facing the Neva River and surrounded by the Admiralty , St Isaac's Cathedral and the buildings of the former Senate and Synod - the civil and religious governing bodies of pre-revolutionary Russia.

The monument was built by order of the Empress Catherine the Great as a tribute to her famous predecessor on the Russian throne, Peter the Great. Being a German princess by birth, she was eager to establish a line of continuity with the earlier Russian monarchs. For that reason an inscription on the monument reads in Latin and Russian: Petro Primo Catharina Secunda - To Peter the First from Catherine the Second.

This equestrian statue of Peter the Great, created by the famous French sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet, depicts the most prominent reformer of the Russia state as a Roman hero. The pedestal is made of a single piece of red granite molded into the shape of a cliff. From the top of this "cliff" Peter gallantly leads Russia forward, while his horse steps on a snake, which represents the enemies of Peter and his reforms.

According to a 19 th century legend, enemy forces will never take St. Petersburg while the "Bronze Horseman" stands in the middle of the city. During the Second World War the statue was not taken down, but was protected with sand bags and a wooden shelter. In that way, the monument survived the 900-day Siege of Leningrad virtually untouched.
