Step-by-Step Process of Changing to an Employment Visa

Below is the process of changing a visit visa to an employment visa:

  • 01   First, get the offer letter from the prospective employer
  • 02   Confirm that you have accepted the offer to your employer and sign the offer letter within one day
  • 03   After that, your employer will apply for a quota & labor contract for you to work in the UAE. You and the employer are required to sign the labor contract once it has been approved. This will take 2 to three working days.
  • 04   Next, your employer will apply for your residence entry permit, which will take one day.
  • 05   Change status in one day
  • 06   Get a medical assessment which takes two days and a day for VIPs
  • 07   After that, biometrics will be taken, and your Emirates ID, which will take 2 to 3 working days

If you have found a job, your employer will apply for your residence visa on your behalf and see it through to completion.

You will need to undergo the required medical tests and security checks for your visa to be approved.

According to the new visa reforms 2023, you will be fined 50 AED each day if you haven’t changed your visa status before your visit visa expiry.

Individuals who overstay their visas in the UAE will be charged a penalty. You must be aware of the potential fines and learn how to check if you owe any overstay fines. After your UAE visa expires and you exhaust your grace period, you must pay the overstay fine according to the number of days accumulated.

On top of the overstay fine, you will need to obtain a Dubai/UAE out pass, which costs up to AED 300. The out pass is basically an exit permit that allows holders to leave the UAE. This new rule is in accordance with the latest announcement.

When switching from a visit visa to an employment visa in the UAE, it can sometimes take several days. If the company where you got the job offer cites any of the reasons below, you should immediately opt to extend your UAE visit visa.

  • Quota issues: The Labour department assigns a specific number of quotas to each company based on the size of the business, business type, and the professions available. If your employers don't have a specific quota to hire, it may take longer than expected, and they should request the Labour department.
  • National Holidays: the UAE has few national holidays compared to other countries. If your employment visa application falls on a national holiday such as the Eid holidays or any other major holiday, you may lose days as government offices will be closed.
  • Ramadan: visa processing during Ramadan is usually slow and can take even four working days to get approved or rejected. Working hours during Ramadan are reduced in both the public and private sectors. System issues may also cause delays during this time. Ordinarily, a visit visa takes no more than two working days to be issued.
  • Incomplete PRO or Typing Center: at times, your employer PRO or the typing center handling your employment visa is unable to move things along quickly. As a result, most visitors end up incurring lots of fines. If you sense this issue, you might want to consider extending your visa.

A Gulf News reader based in Mauritius reached out to us through our Facebook page with a simple question: “I would like to know what the visa procedures for Dubai are, for both a work visa and a tourist visa.”

If you, too, want to come to Dubai but are not sure how to start the process, here is a guide on the visa options you can avail of.

How to get a tourist visa for Dubai

Do i need a visa to enter dubai.

Any foreign national wishing to come to Dubai, whether on a visit or to live here, is required to have the relevant visa. However, if you are coming to Dubai on a tourist visa, you may not need to apply for a visit visa in advance, as nationals of some countries get a visa on arrival in Dubai.

What is the validity period of my visa?

All visas are valid for 60 days from the date of issue until entry to the UAE, except the 48-hour and 96-hour Transit Visa, which is valid for 30 days.

What should I check before travelling to Dubai?

You would need to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months at the time of entry. You may also need to apply for your tourist visa in advance, depending on your nationality.

Can I get a visa on arrival?

Citizens of more than 50 countries do not require a pre-arranged visa to enter Dubai. As per the website of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), citizens of GCC countries and citizens of the following countries can get a visa on arrival:

Indian citizens

Some Indian citizens may also be eligible for a visa on arrival. This includes Indian citizens holding a normal passport and either:

• a visit visa issued by the USA or • a green card issued by the USA or • a residence visa issued by the UK or • a residence visa issued by the EU

In such cases, you can obtain a visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 14 days, provided that the visa or the green card is valid for at least six months from the date of arrival into the UAE.

If you are not eligible for a visa on arrival, here are all the other visa options you can avail of:

1. Tourist visa – 30-day or 90-day

Tourist visas can be obtained by tourists from around the world. Depending on your plan, tourist visas to the UAE can be issued for 30-days or 90-day durations and allow single entry or multiple entries.

Who can apply for your tourist visa?

1. Airlines

Each airline has some conditions, which must be met for your visa to be arranged by them. One of the conditions is flying with them. When booking your ticket, you can also enquire about applying for a visit visa.

2. Tourist visas through agencies and hotels

Licensed travel agents and hotels in the UAE can arrange a tourist visa for you, provided you purchase the ticket through them and maintain a hotel reservation with the specific hotel.

You can also contact travel agencies in your country for any tourist packages available to the UAE in collaboration with a local tour operator.

3. Through UAE-based family and friends

As per the VisitDubai website, UAE residents (friends or relatives) can apply on your behalf subject to guidelines.

How can I extend the visa?

While the first time you apply for a visit visa you may not be inside the UAE, when extending the visa for another period of 30 or 90 days, you would need to apply for an ‘inside country visa change’, according to Sirajudeen Ummer, Business Development Manager at Supreme Business Services.

“The visa can be extended by providing the necessary documents and making the fee payment,” he said.

Documents required for processing inside the country visa change:

• Passport copy (which should be valid for at least six months) • Passport size photograph • Old visa tourist/cancelled visa copy • On arrival nationalities would only require Passport copy and photograph if they have entered UAE using on-arrival facility. • If the visa was applied for by a relative or friend, they may need to submit a copy of their residence visa page and UID number.

Visas can cost approximately Dh320 for a one-month visa and Dh700 for a three-month visa. If you are inside the UAE and are applying for a new visa, the cost for a one-month would be Dh960 and a three-month visa would cost Dh1,250.

2. Visit visa to visit relatives and friends

With the UAE introducing new visa categories and updating its visa system from October 2, 2022, you can now consider applying for a visit visa yourself under the category of 'visit visa to visit relatives and friends'.

3. Transit visa – for 48 to 96 hours

This type of a visa, which is available for all passport holders, from 48 to 96 hours, is ideal for a short stopover in the UAE.

According to GDRFA, here is how you can apply for a 96-hour transit visa – or an entry permit – when you arrive in the UAE.

Service requirements

To be able to get a transit visa issued at the immigration counter, you would need to present the following:

• Original passport • An airline ticket showing the continuation of your journey, where the connecting flight should not be less than eight hours after you land in the UAE and not exceeding 96 hours and the destination of arrival and departure are not similar. • Present a valid hotel reservation in UAE.

How to Apply for a Work Visa in Dubai

One of the key things to understand about working in the UAE is that the work visa or employment permit is provided by the employer. As an employee, you don’t apply for such visas or permits on your own. Once you find that perfect opportunity, it’s time to move on to the second step.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) issues work permits in Dubai. Your employer has to apply for this permit, which is then converted into a valid residency visa. Once you get the residence visa, the work permit allows you to enter the UAE and work there. This permit is valid for two months. During this time, your employer will have to arrange formalities like medical testing, Emirates ID, Labour Card and residency visa. 

The residency visa primarily is a clear piece of evidence that you are sponsored by the organisation and that it has paid for your work permit, medical testing and Emirates ID.

Once you receive your residence visa, you can sponsor your family and bring them into the country.  This includes single mothers as well. In addition, men sponsored by wives in UAE can also get a work permit.

Who can apply for a work visa in Dubai?

Application for Dubai work visa

Three conditions decide whether or not expats need a Dubai working visa. You’ll need one if: 

  • You have been hired while you are still in your country
  • A job opportunity comes up when you are in Dubai on a visit visa or tourist visa 
  • You are already working in Dubai and want to switch companies

In the first instance, MoHRE and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation have set up centres outside the country to facilitate this process. 

In the second instance, you can obtain your Dubai work permit by exiting the UAE. You don’t necessarily have to fly back home. Airlines such as Air Arabia and FlyDubai offer you a ‘visa run’ facility in which you can stopover at a neighbouring country (such as Oman) till you obtain a work permit in Dubai. 

The hiring company can also avail of the ‘Change Status’ process by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDFRA) in Dubai. In this scenario, you do not have to leave the country to obtain the work permit in Dubai. 

In the third instance, you also get a new work permit to join a new company. As per Article 1 of Ministerial Decree No. 766 of 2015, an employee whose contract was terminated because of expiry of contract is eligible for a new work permit in Dubai, provided they are able to secure a new career opportunity.

As per the amended UAE’s Labour Law No. 8 of 1980, you need to be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for the work permit in Dubai.

  • Photograph against a white background
  • Copy of passport (which is valid for at least six months)
  • Copy of education certificates required for the job (this has to be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country)

Along with the Dubai work permit visa requirements, you also need to take medical fitness tests at government-approved health centres in Dubai. This is necessary both for new work visa applicants as well as renewals. You will have to take a blood test and get an x-ray of your chest to screen for pulmonary tuberculosis.

How to Get a UAE Work Visa: Step-by-Step Guide

The number of people moving abroad for work has grown substantially in recent years, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a top destination. The UAE’s simple employment visa requirements contribute to its large expat community, which makes up 88% of the population.

Before moving to the UAE, expats, or foreign nationals, must apply for a UAE work visa. This application process involves several steps, such as choosing the right work visa, obtaining an entry visa, applying for an Emirates ID, and getting a medical checkup.

In this guide, we compare the UAE’s various work visas, provide a list of required documents needed for visa application, and walk through the steps of the application process.

Types of UAE work visas

Before entering the UAE for work, foreign nationals must obtain a UAE work visa. Foreigners can choose from three types of UAE work visas: standard work visa, Green visa, and Golden visa. The right visa depends on the circumstances of each applicant.

Standard work visa

A standard work visa in the UAE is an employer-sponsored work visa that permits an expat to live and work as an employee in the UAE for two to three years. After this time, the employer must renew or cancel the visa.

A standard work visa is one of the most common options for working or hiring talent in the UAE . It requires an employment contract and approval from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE).

Before arriving in the UAE on a standard work visa, a foreign national must accept a job offer in writing and obtain an entry permit. The entry permit allows them to enter the UAE and begin the process of officiating their work visa and residence visa.

In October 2022, the UAE introduced the Green visa to attract and support foreign freelancers and self-employed individuals in the UAE. The Green visa grants holders residency for five years and, unlike the standard UAE work visa, does not require employer sponsorship.

The Green visa has additional benefits, such as the ability to sponsor immediate relatives to relocate to the UAE, a six-month grace period upon visa expiry or cancellation, and a simplified application process.

The documents required to apply for a Green visa vary depending on the applicant's work category. However, standard required documents include a valid employment contract or self-employment permit from the MoHRE, proof of education, and proof of sufficient income during the applicant's stay in the UAE.

Golden visa

The UAE’s Golden visa is an extended residence permit that allows professionals with exceptional qualifications to live, work, and study in the UAE for 10 years without a local sponsor. People who qualify for the Golden visa are usually doctors, scientists, athletes, inventors, artists, healthcare staff, or others with select qualifications.

Golden visa holders enjoy various benefits, such as access to exclusive health insurance packages and the ability to sponsor unlimited immediate family members and support staff. They can also spend unlimited time outside the UAE without impacting the validity of their visa.

The list of supporting documents for a Golden visa varies depending on the applicant’s background. An eligibility quiz on the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) website clarifies whether or not a person qualifies for the Golden visa.

Who is eligible to obtain a UAE work visa?

Anyone over 18 can legally work as an expat in the UAE, provided the employer and employee meet the MoHRE’s standards . Below is a general overview of the MoHRE’s conditions for working in the UAE:

  • The employer has a valid operating license
  • The employer has no violations
  • The employee’s work corresponds to the nature of the company’s operations
  • The employee has at least a high school diploma

There is no maximum age limit for applicants, but employers must pay an additional AED5,000 (US$1,360) fee every two years for employing workers over 65 years old.

Requirements for obtaining a UAE employment visa

UAE employment visa requirements vary, depending on the visa category. Below is a general list of the required supporting documents for a UAE work visa application:

  • Original passport and copy
  • Passport-sized photos in line with UAE requirements
  • Emirates ID card
  • Entry permit from the Ministry of Labor (MoL)
  • Medical certificate issued by a government-approved health center in the UAE
  • Copies of the employee’s academic qualifications with authorization from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a UAE Embassy in the employee’s home country
  • Documents from the employer, such as their commercial license and company card

The employer is responsible for the work visa application process and related costs, while the employee is responsible for submitting documents for the residence permit.

How to get a UAE work visa: 10 steps

It’s helpful to think of the UAE work visa application process in three stages: getting an employment entry visa, applying for an Emirates ID, and obtaining a residence visa and work visa. We outline the stages and their steps below.

Stage 1: Obtain an employment entry visa in the UAE

1. apply for an entry visa quota approval.

If the applicant resides and works in one of the UAE’s 46 free zones, the employer must apply for a UAE free zone visa , which requires visa quota approval from the Ministry of Labor.

Free zone employers have a quota restriction on work visas, which vary across free zones. For example, the quota in Dubai is one visa per nine square meters of office space. If an employer reaches their quota, they can move to a larger office or apply for a quota upgrade.

2. Submit a signed employment contract

Upon receiving quota approval, the employer must submit a signed work contract to the MoL for approval. The contract must be in English, Arabic, and the employee’s native language if it differs from either language.

3. Submit a work visa application and apply for an entry visa

The employer must submit their work visa application for approval. At this stage, the MoL confirms that the sponsor is a registered UAE corporate entity and determines if any unemployed UAE citizens can fill the vacant position instead of the foreign applicant. The MoL must approve the work visa application before issuing an entry visa.

4. Receive an employment entry visa

Upon approval of the work visa application, the MoL issues an employment entry visa, also known as a pink visa. The entry visa is valid for two months for standard and Green visa holders and six months with multiple entries for Golden visa holders. It allows the employee to legally enter the UAE to formalize their work visa and apply for a residence visa.

The employee receives the entry visa upon arrival to the UAE. If they cannot travel to the UAE within 60 days, they may apply for a one-time extension. If the employee is already in the UAE on a different visa, they must apply for a visa ‘change of status’ or do a ‘border run’ to obtain the entry visa upon arrival.

Upon entry, the employee must begin collecting supporting documents for their residence visa application, such as an Emirates ID and health certificate, while the employer submits additional documents to officiate the work visa.

Stage 2: Apply for an Emirates ID

Foreign nationals entering or relocating to the UAE for work must get an Emirates ID, which is necessary for the required medical screening. The ID directly links to the expat’s residence visa and serves as an everyday identification document in the UAE in place of a passport.

To apply for an Emirates ID, the employee must visit an Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) center with their passport and entry visa and provide biometrics, such as their fingerprints and a photograph.

Stage 3: Obtain a work visa and residence visa in the UAE

6. get a medical checkup.

All applicants must receive medical screening at a government-approved clinic in the UAE. The results of the checkup are required for the residence visa application.

7. Submit a labor contract

As a part of the UAE work visa formalization, employers must upload their employee’s labor contract to the MoL website within 14 days of receiving the employee’s medical screening results.

8. Get health insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for all expat employees in the UAE. In some Emirates, such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai, employers must provide health insurance for employees and their families.

If a foreign employee resides in Sharjah or one of the northern Emirates, they must purchase their own health insurance plan. The MoL does not issue or renew work visas for employees without a valid health insurance card.

9. Receive a work visa and begin payroll

After completing the above steps, it takes about five days for the MoL to grant an official work visa. Upon receiving the work visa, employees can legally begin working in the UAE, and employers can start administering payroll through the official UAE system.

10. Receive a residence visa

Once all of the above items are in place, the employee must submit the required documents with their application for a residence visa. If the applicant hasn’t received their official Emirates ID, an application receipt will suffice. The residence visa is valid for two years and is renewable.

All expats need a residence visa to live in the UAE, and the MoL lists the employee’s work visa as part of the residence visa. Expats also need a residence visa for completing formalities, such as opening bank accounts, registering a car, and opening a PO box.

Considerations before obtaining a work visa in the UAE

One of the unique considerations for acquiring a standard work visa in the UAE is that every applicant requires sponsorship from a legally incorporated entity in the UAE. This requirement complicates the process for foreign companies interested in hiring talent in the UAE.

If a company has not established a local entity in the UAE but wants to employ foreign nationals, it can partner with an employer of record (EOR) instead. An EOR is a third-party organization that serves as the legal employer of your global workforce so you can hire talent outside your home country without establishing a local entity.

The Recruitment Landscape In the UAE

The UAE continues to be one of the most popular destinations for professionals across the world, which makes it a very competitive recruitment landscape. As a result, despite some recent initiatives, the majority of the UAE’s workforce is made up of expats from all over the globe.

This allows many companies to have higher expectations and a stricter criterion when hiring new employees. As a result, the recruitment process is typically longer, so it’s important to keep this in mind when setting out your hiring timeline.

Ministry of Labour Documentation

As a business, before you can hire expats in the UAE you will need to obtain two legal documents an ‘establishment labour card’ and an ‘establishment immigration card’ from the Ministry of Labour. In these documents it sets out the legal obligations of businesses when employing international workers, including, but not limited to:

  • Working Hours
  • Government Health Cards
  • Work Contracts
  • Workmen’s Compensation
  • Annual Leave Entitlements
  • End of Service Benefits

To apply for both these documents you will need a company trade licence and a company PO Box address. The applications must be submitted to the Ministry of Labour by the owner of the company, partner or PRO. The cards are often issued on the spot if approved.

Work Permits in the UAE

Once you have obtained your companies establishment labour card and establishment immigration card, you are now able to apply for work permits on behalf of your employees.

As the employer you are responsible for applying for work permits on behalf of your employees and responsible for all cost incurred during the application process. Once you have issued your employee with a contract, you will be able to apply for a residence visa and work permit.

Also, it is important to note if you are looking to employ someone that is already in the UAE with a work permit, it is essential that this handover is managed compliantly otherwise penalty charges may be applied.

Work Visa Process and Documents Required

There are a few steps to the process of obtaining a UAE visa. Here is a step by step guide of the process.

Visa Quotas

In order to hire expats in the UAE you need to obtain visa quotas from the Ministry of Labour (MOL).  This will need to be done by you, the employer and the quota you get will vary depending on the size of your business. 

Contract Signing

Once you have your visa quota, you should get the employment contracts out to your people for signing.  Once received you then submit the offer letter to MOL for review and approval.

MOL approval

At this stage the MOL reviews the details of the position to decide if there are any unemployed UAE citizens that can take the position.  They also check that the company sponsoring the visa is a registered entity in the UAE.  Once these checks are done you will receive the MOL approval.  

E-visa granted

Once MOL approval has been received your workers can then receive their E-visa.  This allows them to travel to the UAE and is valid for 2 months from the date of issue.  Once inside the UAE your workers can only remain for 30 days (can be extended).  During this time they will complete the following tasks to formalise the work visa which allows them to stay and work.

Arrival in the UAE

Upon arriving in the UAE there are a number of formalities to be completed in order to convert your e-visa into a residence visa. These should be done as soon as possible once your worker arrives in the UAE.    

  • Medical Screening
  • Emirates ID application – submit documents including passport and entry permit in order to apply for an emirates ID
  • Signed Labour Contract – once medical results are received this must be submitted to MOL

Once these submissions have been made it will then take around 5 days for the work permit to be granted.  At this point your workers are ready to start.

Workers must also have a valid health insurance policy provided either by their employer or purchased by themselves.  Work permits will not be issued without an insurance card.

Once all of these items are in place the residence visa can then be stamped into the passport.  Once this has been completed the Emirates ID card can also be collected.

Dependant Visas In The AUE

If your employees will be living in the UAE with their Spouse or Children, they will require dependant visas. Similar to the above they will need to be provided with the necessary compliance items such as medical insurance. However, if the employee is male, they will be able to sponsor their own family members provided they have a valid permit and meet a minimum salary of Dh.4000 or Dh.3000. For females, they are able to sponsor their husbands, however there are extra conditions.

Are you planning to hire and relocate employees to the UAE? There are several visa options that allow companies to hire foreign talent and bring them to UAE.

In this article, we will take a look at these employment visa types and how to apply for a work visa for your employees.

Types of UAE Employment Visas

Standard work visa.

A Standard Work Visa in the UAE allows individuals to live and work in the UAE for the duration of the visa (normally 2 years). As an employer, you need to sponsor this visa and apply for renewal or cancellation when it expires. 

With a standard work permit, employees can work for a company in the UAE free zones, mainland, or government sector. 

The following are the requirements to apply for a UAE work visa for your employees:

  • The employee must be at least 18 years old
  • The company should not have any violations or issues
  • The company that wants to hire the employee must have a valid license
  • The job should match your company’s profile

While mainland companies in the UAE can sponsor visas based on their office space, free zone companies have visa restrictions and usually can only sponsor up to 6 employees. In that case, an Employer of Record offers you the flexibility to hire more employees and relocate them to UAE without legal constraints.

If you are hiring for managerial or leadership roles, science or technology experts, or skilled technicians in similar fields, your employees might be eligible for a Green Visa.

A Green Visa is a five-year residency visa in the UAE that enables skilled employees and freelancers/self-employed individuals to sponsor themselves. As a result, it eliminates the need for employers to sponsor their employees.

To apply for a Green Visa for skilled employees, they must:

  • Hold a valid employment contract
  • Have a monthly salary of AED 15,000 or more
  • Be classified in the first, second, or third occupational level
  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification

In the case of freelancers and self-employed persons, the eligibility requirements for a Green Visa in the UAE vary slightly. They must:

  • Obtain the MoHRE permit for freelancing and self-employment in the UAE
  • Proof of making at least AED 360,000 a year from your own business for the last two years, or proof of sufficient financial means for your time in the UAE
  • Attested bachelor’s or specialized degree

It is also possible to renew the Green Visa upon expiration by following the same requirements as mentioned above.

Golden Visa

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residence permit aimed at executive directors, investors, entrepreneurs, inventors, exceptional students, and front-line workers. It allows visa holders to stay, work, or study in the UAE for up to 10 years without requiring a sponsor.

Though a Golden Visa might not be relevant for general employees, it can be a suitable option if you are planning to onboard business executives.

Here are the Golden Visa requirements for a Business Executive:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the same role
  • Salary of at least AED 50,000

Who is Not Eligible to be Employed in UAE?

In the UAE, not all visa types permit employment within your company. The following visa categories do not qualify individuals to be employed as part of your team:

  • Investor Visa holders
  • Shareholders
  • Business owners
  • Tourist visa holders

If you want to hire someone who currently holds any of the above-mentioned visas, their visa status must be changed. 

How to Apply for a Work Visa in UAE

When applying for a work visa, as an employer, you must initiate the application. This includes getting the necessary approvals from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation and more. 

Here are the key steps to apply for a work permit in the UAE.

  • Get the Entry Visa Quota Approval: You need to submit the quota approval application to MoHRE and wait for the approval.
  • Submit the Signed and Translated Job Contract: The contract must be in Arabic, English, and the employee’s native language if it is different.
  • Apply for a Work Permit and Entry Visa for the employee: MoHRE verifies the company status, etc. and issues the work permit. 

Once the work permit is approved, your employee will get the entry visa in their email and have two months to come to UAE. After coming to the UAE, employees need to get their Emirates ID and official work visa from the Ministry to start working for the company.

Employees with Current Residence Status in UAE

If your employee currently resides in UAE, you will need to provide a work permit. However, they might be able to work for you on the same visa depending on their visa category.

For instance, when you hire someone on a dependent visa such as a spouse, they can work on the same visa provided that:

  • You issue a work permit based on the employee’s job position
  • Employee submits an NOC (Non-Objection Certificate) from the Sponsor

Similarly, when hiring someone who already works for a different employer in the UAE, you need to issue a work permit while the sponsor employer will have to provide an NOC.

Do I need a visa for the UAE?

UAE visa on arrival

Preapproved uae visas, prearranged uae visas, sponsoring someone to visit the uae, contact information, 30-day visit eligibility.

If you are a passport holder of the below country or territory, no advance visa arrangements are required to visit the UAE. Simply disembark your flight at Dubai International and proceed to immigration, where your passport will be stamped with a 30-day visit visa free of charge.

90-day visit eligibility

If you are a passport holder of one of the below countries or territories, your passport will be stamped with a multiple entry 90-day visit visa that's valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and for a stay of 90 days in total. Citizens of the below European countries are also entitled to apply for a pre-arranged visit visa if their 90-day visa on arrival has been fully utilized.

180-day visit eligibility

If you hold a Mexican passport you’re eligible for a multiple entry 180-day visit visa that's valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and for a stay of 180 days in total.

Dubai immigration procedures

As an added security measure, Immigration Authorities at Dubai International are now conducting random visual screening for visitors to Dubai.

Visitors asked to proceed for visual screening are required to present a hard copy of their visa or a printed version of the visa number confirmation page at the screening counter. If you do not have a copy of your visa with you, a charge of AED 30 per copy applies, payable only in AED.

Important information

Before you travel to the UAE, please check your visa requirements and make sure you have a valid visa if needed, or if your passport needs to be valid for six months. Holders of non-standard passports and travel documents may also have different entry requirements: find out if you need to apply for a visa and other passport requirements.

As of April 29, 2016, GCC residence permit holders will need to apply for a UAE visa before arriving in Dubai.

New visit entry permit to the UAE for Indian nationals

From January 7, 2024, eligible Indian nationals with a normal passport valid for a minimum of six months can obtain a single entry, 14-day visa on arrival. A fee of USD 63 applies.

Eligibility

  • Indian passport holder with USA visa valid for a minimum of six months
  • Indian passport holder with USA green card valid for a minimum of six months
  • Indian passport holder with UK residence card valid for a minimum of six months
  • Indian passport holder with EU residence card from the following countries valid for a minimum of six months

How and where to apply for a preapproved UAE visa

Eligible Indian nationals can apply for their UAE entry permit on emirates.com through Manage your booking .

  • For Extension, Original passport and ticket copy required.
  • Extensions can be made at the airport office only.

Required applicant documents.

  • Color photograph of applicant
  • Color copy of applicant's passport. The passport must be valid for at least six months
  • You can download the application form (available at all Emirates Ticketing Offices) in  Arabic (Opens a PDF in a new tab)  or English (Opens a PDF in a new tab)  depending on the applicant’s nationality.

Rules and conditions

  • Sponsor or applicant will be responsible for a visitor overstay and overstay fines.
  • A Refundable deposit of AED 1,000 for friend. Sponsor must claim the deposit within a maximum of two years from the application submission date.
  • Refund of visa fee before processing of an application, AED 50 will be deducted on refund process.
  • Visa fees must be paid upon application.
  • Additional visa processing fees may apply.
  • Visa fees are nonrefundable.
  • The ticket is non-refundable if the visa has been issued and utilized.
  • Visa processing time is approximately 3 to 4 working days.
  • Entry into the UAE is subject to immigration approval.
  • All visas are valid to enter Dubai for 60 days from the date of issue, except the 96-hour and 48-hour visas, which are valid for 30 days from the date of issue.

The online visa application service is available for residents and nationals of many countries around the world. Find out if you can apply for a UAE visa. Applicants' passports must have at least six months' validity as of the date of travel to Dubai and must be machine-readable; handwritten passports are not accepted.

This service is only available to passengers with a confirmed Emirates booking where an Emirates ticket has already been issued and the flight itinerary already includes the desired time in Dubai. The itinerary into and out of Dubai should be on one ticket (PNR), and these flights must be Emirates flights. Note that itineraries including flights to or from Dubai on other carriers are not eligible for online visa service.

A minimum of 4 international working days prior to arrival in Dubai is required; however, Emirates recommends that online applications be made as early as possible.

  • You can get a job in UAE even above sixty years

  • You are to bargain on wages or salaries with your employer because the country has no minimum wage
  • You can work for eight hours a day or six days a week except you are an essential worker

In addition, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) categorize foreign workers into three levels.

  • Level one employees must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related job role.
  • Level two employees should have a diploma certificate from recognized institutions.
  • Level three employees are to obtain a high school certificate.

UAE Work permits application steps 

To apply for a work permit, your UAE employer should assist you with the requirements to get it. The application procedures are:

  • The employer should visit the official website of the Ministry of labor Tas’Heel to fill out the application form and print it out.
  • The employer proceeds to pay the work permit application fee.
  • Attach all the required documents to the application form and submit it
  • Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) will review the application and process if everything is in order.
  • The next thing is for the Labour Ministry to mail the work permit to your employer’s email address for download.
  • Finally, your employer will mail you the electronic work permit so that you can print it. You should leave for the United Arab emirate to apply for your UAE work visa as soon as possible.

Application fee for UAE work permit 

The employer in UAE pays the application fee for the work permit application fee. The amount to pay depends on the level the foreign worker belongs to; find below the fees accordingly.

  • The initial work permit request fee for all levels is 200 Arab Emirates Dirham (AED)
  • Approval fee for
  • Level one foreign workers are 300 AED.
  • Category A is 600 AED
  • Category B is 1500 AED
  • Category C is 2000 AED

Level three is for foreign workers above the age of sixty-five years, and the application fee is 5000 AED.

  • Level two foreign workers are subdivided into categories concerning several skilled and unskilled workers the employer has.
  • It takes up to five working days for the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) to process your work permits.
  • You can extend the work permit through your employer for another thirty days before it expires. You and your employer have this period to make all necessary moves to secure the UAE work visa and the Emirates ID, and your Labour Card.

Documents required for a UAE work visa

You should take along with you the documents below and other necessary ones to apply for a UAE work visa.

  • A genuine traveling passport and its photocopy should be valid for a minimum of six months.
  • A recent passport photograph with UAE recommended specifications.
  • An employment letter from a licensed UAE company or organization
  • A medical certificate of fitness from government-approved health facilities in the. UAE
  • Original and copies of your academic credentials. These documents must be certified by the UAE mission and the ministry of foreign affairs in your country.

  • Log in to the official website of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in the emirate to create an account.
  • Select the service. Required in the case of a work visa application
  • Fill out the application form correctly.
  • Upload all the required documents
  • Pay the application fee.

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs will affix a UAE work visa on your passport if your application is successful. The time to process necessary documents to acquire work permits and residency visas has been reduced from 30 days to five days across the UAE following the launch of the second phase of the Work Bundle platform on Tuesday.

Several government ministries and federal authorities have come together to launch a platform that will ease the hiring of new employees for business owners and private companies, and the pre-renewal of work permits for existing employees.

The first phase was first rolled out in Dubai in March and is now being implemented in all seven emirates. The second phase of Work Bundle will cover about 600,000 companies and more than seven million workers.

MoHRE said the third phase will cover the domestic workers.

Companies and employees can for now only access Work Bundle on its website (workinuae.ae) but a mobile app will soon be made available.

What services are simplified under Work Bundle?

Eight work and residency procedures are now reduced into one platform. Work Bundle avoids duplication of procedures and simplifies services for on-boarding new employees, such as:

  • Issuing a new work permit
  • Requesting a status adjustment
  • Issuing a visa and employment contract
  • Emirates ID, residency, and medical examination services.

Work Bundle services also simplify:

  • Renewing a worker’s employment contract
  • Emirates ID and residency renewal
  • Medical examination services
  • Cancelling a worker’s employment contract, work permit and residency.

How to access Work Bundle?

Services can only be accessed on Work Bundle website (workinuae.ae) but a mobile app will be made available soon.

How does Work Bundle simplify the procedures?

The platform offers the principle of requesting data only once – meaning, all basic information about the workers/employees and companies will be asked only once and will be used for all the services, thereby significantly reducing procedures and requirements, and ensuring proactivity in service delivery.

Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, director general of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security, noted: “Work Bundle platform provides services through a unified portal, with simple, streamlined procedures, which saves time and effort, reducing the number of visits needed to complete transactions by 80 per cent.”

Where is Work Bundle being implemented?

Work Bundle was first implemented in Dubai back in March this year. Now, the platform covers all the emirates.

Mohamed bin Taliah, chief of Government Services of the UAE Government, said: “Work Bundle is expanded to include all companies operating in the UAE. It is a culmination of the significant efforts of teams across various federal and local entities, who, over the past few months, have been working to develop the project that reflects the importance of simplifying procedures and requirements to save time and effort for users, in line with the UAE’s Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme.”

Which entities were involved in designing and developing phase two of Work Bundle?

Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE); Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Port Security; Emirates Health Services (EHS); Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA); and the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi.

The government entities said “services (have been) re-engineered to be faster and more efficient, enabling real-time, proactive services that are centred around customer experience.”

Khalil Al Khoori, undersecretary for Human Resources Affairs at MoHRE, said: “Work Bundle facilitates data exchange, automates services and government procedures, simplifies processes, and reduces time and effort.”

How secure is Work Bundle?

Al Khoori noted that Work Bundle “adopts a unified, secure, and reliable payment mechanism, ensuring speed, efficiency, and quality of services ... There is also a unified payment model and mechanism shared with all entities, reducing the number of required visits and documents through the use of modern technology and digital platforms that enhance collaboration among federal and local government entities."

“This is a significant step towards advancing the design and delivery of government services to meet future demand," he added.

To work in UAE, all foreign nationals are required to obtain a work permit and a residency permit. Generally, an employer is responsible for providing the required documents. Types of UAE Long Stay Work Visas

You must know about the types of work visas to know the UAE work visa requirements. The following are the different types of work visas available:

A standard visitor visa is given for 2 years. To obtain a standard visitor visa you must be

  • A private sector employee. (You need to apply for a residency visa for a person working in the priority sector)
  • An employed person in the government sector or a free zone( You need to apply for a residency visa in a free zone)

An offer letter is mandatory for this type of visa.

A green visa is a residency visa given for 5 years. This long-term visa is for skilled professionals, investors, and freelancers. The benefits of a green visa are as follows:

  • You do not need an employer or sponsor to apply
  • The visa allows you to sponsor visas for family members such as children
  • Additionally, extended time is given (up to 6 months) after the visa expiry or cancellation. This allows them to remain in the region
  • Sons can stay in on a green visa till their 25th birthday. However, a daughter can stay till marriage- no age limit is given,.

UAE work visa requirements: To obtain a green visa you must provide proof of annual income from self-employment (AED 360,000), or a salary of not less than AED 15,000 per month (as a skilled worker). Additionally bachelor’s degree or a specialised diploma must be presented. A freelance/self-employment permit or a valid employment permit is also needed.

The UAE Golden visa is another type of long-term residence permit.  With a golden visa, a resident can utilise several benefits such as:

  • An entry permit of 6 month
  • The permit can be renewed for 5-10 years without sponsorship
  • Can stay outside UAE for 6 months and still retain the resident tenure 
  • Can provide visa sponsorship to family members spouses and children regardless of their age
  • If the primary visa holder dies, then the dependent can still stay in UAE till the permit duration.

Any foreign national above the age of 18 can apply for a UAE Work Visa. A UAE work visa sets no maximum age limit for the applicant. (Those above 65 years need to pay a higher fee). However, every applicant must meet the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). The foreign workers are divided into 3 categories based on their skills:

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree 
  • Must have a post-secondary diploma in any field 
  • Must have a high school diploma

  • Submit a passport-size photograph as per the UAE requirements 
  • Submit proof of your academic qualifications. The UAE consulate or embassy would verify these documents 
  • You need to undergo a medical examination at a government-approved health centre. The medical documentation must be submitted
  • Additionally, the company that’s hiring you must present documents such as a company card, commercial license, etc.

After you have met the UAE work visa requirements, you can obtain a work permit. The UAE work permit steps are provided below. Note- The employer applies for a work permit. The steps undertaken are as follows 

  • The employer would visit the Tas’Heel website,- this is the Ministry of Labour’s online portal
  • Next, they would submit the required documents
  • The ministry would receive the application, and ask for any additional information if required 
  • The ministry can ask for you to correct any irregularities that are considered necessary
  • After the Ministry’s approval, the employer can download the same from the website

The UAE work permit initially given is only valid for 30 days. You can extend the time provided for 30 additional days. During this time the employer and you will have to work together to arrange a residence visa, Emirates ID, and the Labour card.  You need both the residence permit and the labour card to live and work in the UAE legally. A residence permit can be issued for 1-3 years depending on the purpose of your stay.

It is possible to renew a UAE work visa. You need to apply for the visa renewal 30 days before the expiry date of the visa. The application process is similar to getting your initial visa. The sponsor will have to apply at the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. Generally, a work visa is renewed for the same period as the initial work permit validity period. If your visa falls under the ‘grace period’ then you can renew your visa after the expiry date.

Dubai is one of the 7 emirates in the UAE. Therefore, the eligibility requirements for the Dubai work visa are the same as the UAE work visa requirements. The steps to obtain a work visa for Dubai are:

  • Apply for a job in Dubai either through an online portal or while visiting the UAE on a visitor visa 
  • Next, obtain the job offer letter from the employer. The employer would be responsible for applying for a work permit on your behalf while you are in your home country
  • If the work permit is approved you can use the same to enter Dubai 
  • The employer would now arrange for you to undergo a medical examination. Meanwhile, a residence permit is applied for.
  • The employer would arrange the Labour card and the Emirates ID card 

To become eligible for a UAE work visa you need to obtain an offer letter from a recognised employer in UAE. Your employer would then apply for an entry permit and a residence visa at the MoHRE on your behalf.

Duly filled in the visa application form, photographs, passport, educational documentation, and documents proving work experience, police clearance certificate,  proof of income, and proof of clear medical record. Additional documents may be requested.

You can go to UAE for work on a work permit. After you have received a job offer letter from a recognised employer, the employer will file for a residence permit on your behalf. It is not possible to work in UAE on a visitor visa.

The DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application form, is for temporary travel to the United States, and for K (fiancé(e)) visas. Form DS-160 is submitted electronically to the Department of State website via the Internet. Consular Officers use the information entered on the DS-160 to process the visa application and, combined with a personal interview, determine an applicant’s eligibility for a nonimmigrant visa.

Visa applicants must submit a completed DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application for all nonimmigrant visa categories, including applicants applying for K visas. ( Note:   For K visa cases in process at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate prior to October 7, 2013, review the limited exceptions explained in the FAQs below.)

MoHRE issues 12 types of work permits, which allow establishments registered with MoHRE to recruit employees, depending on the nature of the job. Read about the process for applying for, renewing and cancelling work permits.

The Work Bundle initiative aims to facilitate the issuance of work permits for those working in private sector companies.  The initiative aligns with the Zero Bureaucracy programme aimed to simplify and reduce government procedures and eliminate unnecessary documents. It is a result of close cooperation between various federal and local government entities to enable clients to complete their transactions in the fewest steps possible through digital platforms.

According to Article 6 of the Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations in the Private Sector , known as the ‘UAE Labour Law’, it is illegal for a person to work in the UAE without a valid work permit issued according to the procedures set out by Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation  (MoHRE).

MoHRE issues 12 types of work permits which allow establishments registered with MoHRE to recruit employees, depending on the nature of the job. The types of permit are:

  • a work permit to recruit a worker from outside the UAE
  • a work permit to transfer a foreign worker from one establishment to another
  • a w ork permit for a resident on a family sponsorship
  • a temporary work permit to hire a worker to complete a job within a specific period
  • one-mission work permit to recruit a worker from abroad to complete a temporary job, or a particular project for a specific period
  • a part-time work permit to recruit a worker under a part-time contract where his working hours or days are less than his full-time contract
  • a juvenile permit to recruit a juvenile between 15 and 18 years
  • a student training and employment permit to employ a 15-year old student who is already in the UAE
  • UAE/GCC national permit to employ a UAE or a GCC national
  • a golden visa holder permit to employ a worker holding the UAE’s Golden Residence visa
  • national trainee permit to train a UAE national
  • a freelance permit issued to self-sponsored foreigners in the UAE, who provide services or perform tasks to individuals or companies (without being sponsored by a specific employer in the UAE and without having an employment contract).

The ‘Private Teacher Work’ permit allows specialised and qualified professionals to offer private lessons to students.

Teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students may apply for the ‘Private Teacher Work’ permit through the application, website or the digital services system of Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).

The permit is granted free of charge for two years.

Individuals offering private lessons without a permit from MOHRE will be subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws.

To apply for a work permit

To apply for a work permit, the establishment must:

  • have a valid trade licence and
  • the application must be filed by the authorised signatory of the establishment.

MoHRE may refrain from issuing or renewing, or may cancel work permits if the establishment:

  • provides incorrect documents
  • is fictitious or does not exercise its registered activity
  • is not compliant with the ‘Wages Protection System’ or any other system adopted for the regulation of the national labour market.

To cancel a work permit

When cancelling a work permit  (PDF , 1 MB), the establishment must acknowledge that it has paid the worker all his entitlements. The worker's signature must be on the permit cancellation form.

Additionally, learn about the situations in which the employer is not considered late in issuing and renewing the work permit as mentioned in Article 3 of the Ministerial Decree No. 46 of 2022 Regarding Work Permits, Job Offers and Employment Contracts Forms .

The cost of issuing and renewing a work permit ranges from AED 250 to AED 3,450, and it depends on the company’s classification : A, B or C.

The classification reflects the extent of companies’ compliance with the UAE’s labour law, the Wages Protection System, relevant MoHRE resolutions and directives, laws relating to workers’ rights and with the policy of promoting cultural and demographic diversity. Companies with a history of violations and lack of commitment will be placed in category C.

According to Ministerial Resolution No. 543 of 2022 Regarding Administrative Suspension of an Establishment’s File (PDF, 300 KB), firms will be denied new work permits if they commit any of the following four violations:

  • committing breaches stipulated in the Cabinet Resolution No. 21 of 2020 regarding service fees and administrative fines in the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (PDF, 135 KB)
  • failing to provide appropriate labour accommodations according to the provisions of Ministerial Resolution No. 44 of 2022 Regarding Occupational Health and Safety and labour accommodation (PDF, 265 KB)
  • facing allegations of human trafficking
  • abusing the privilege granted to access the MoHRE systems, which could result in a disruption of the ministry’s procedures.

The above resolution specifies the duration for which work permits will be suspended. It also mentions the measures that the violating firms could take to rectify their acts and omissions, and fulfil their legal obligations to become entitled to obtain work permits again. How to sponsor a permanent worker for a U.S. job

To hire a foreign worker, you may have to sponsor them so they can get an immigrant work visa. 

First, find out if you have to get a labor certification from the Department of Labor (DOL). 

  • Learn about the DOL labor certification process , also known as PERM. 
  • Apply for certification using the Permanent Online System or using ETA Form 9089 . 

Once you have been certified, file your certification along with Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Workers with USCIS.
