T.H.E Interview – Julian Calor

2015 has been a big year for Dance Music enthusiasts, with a number of highly anticipated massive artist albums coming to the forefront.

Revealed Recordings mainstay, Julian Calor has been on top of his game ever since his first hit and there’s been no looking back for the Dutch prodigy, all of 21 years of age, if we may add. Julian’s recently released, first full length album, EVOLVE, is a testament of his talent and musical expertise, and the album garnered massive DJ support as well as it’s terrific sale performance.

“Evolve” is set against the backdrop of Julian’s experimental abilities and we had the opportunity to ask him a few questions about his experiences and plans for the future.

T.H.E – Hey there, Julian! Thank you for taking time out to speak with us. First up, how has life been post the release of Evolve?

Julian Calor – It’s great! I gained a lot of new fans with the album, which I’m very happy with. And now I’m working on new music for my next releases.

T.H.E – You’ve mentioned garnering inspiration from Hip Hop and movie scores. How did you come about designing a unique sound, such as yours, from such inspirations?

Julian Calor – Those inspirations didn’t really made me change my sound, but it motivated me to experiment with different chord structures than mostly used in this type of music.

T.H.E – What are some of your favourite synths and vst’s for the studio? Any studio essential that you carry with you while touring?

Julian Calor – NI Massive is my favorite VST, because I learned what every knob does. I use Sylenth1 and Z3ta to layer sounds make them sound more fat.

T.H.E – Speaking about Evolve, diverse as it is, you chose to experiment with sounds as well as tempos. What inspired you to step away from the standard ‘128 bpm’ formula like most other EDM albums commit to, to create something unique?

Julian Calor – Making those down tempo tracks forced me to have a different approach to making melodies and sounds. It was so refreshing and fun to make those tracks. And that’s why it ended up on the album, because it adds some unique flavors to it.

T.H.E – The album has been 2 years in the making. Did you decide the direction you were going to take with the songs or did it all come together over this period?

Julian Calor – It all came tighter over this period. I learned new things with every track, and used that knowledge for making the next track.

T.H.E – How did you come about signing with Revealed Recordings? How much of an impact has the deal had on you, ever since?

Julian Calor – It had a huge impact on me and my career. A lot of doors have been opened for me since then.

T.H.E – How would you describe your sound? Are you influenced by the complextro sound in any way?

Julian Calor – That’s kind of difficult now, since i’ve released some different genres. But globally I would say; melodic, energetic and raw. I get inspired by a lot of genres, and some complextro tracks definitely inspired me.

T.H.E – The DJ support at festivals has been massive! What’s next for Julian Calor on the touring front?

Julian Calor – A lot of festivals in the summer and more intercontinental after the summer!

T.H.E – Your guilty pleasures, outside Dance Music?

Julian Calor – Bon Jovi. Don’t know if that’s even a guilty pleasure.

Signing his debut release to Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings and having since found supporters in Tiësto, Diplo, David Guetta, Martin Garrix, and Afrojack to name but a few, the exceptional talents of Julian Calor seem to be flourishing well beyond his years, with no signs of slowing down as 2016 has been another stellar year for the rising talent. At just 21-years-old, Julian had already set the scene alight with his unique sense of melody and chord progressions that have continued to send his profile surging upwards.

Not just a growing favourite amongst the dance music elite, Julian’s tracks can often be heard infiltrating the download charts and radio airwaves ever since his first releases and bootlegs. The sound of Julian has since shot through the stratosphere, his #3 Beatport smash ‘Typhoon’ hitting the scene and capturing the attention of those that matter. ‘Typhoon’ claimed the #1 spot in the Buzzchart in its opening week and later received playlist support by dance music don Pete Tong on his legendary BBC Radio 1 show.

As a DJ his deck wizardry has seen him shoot up billing ranks with star appearances at major events that include the Creamfields, Tomorrowland (Belgium and Brazil) and Sunburn India to name a few. In addition to his festival features he has appeared at world-famous venues such as London’s iconic Ministry of Sound and Ushuaia, Ibiza across the Summer, demonstrating further the ever-expanding belief that he is one of the future stars. The Dutch native already has 9 years of experience making beats in the studio, something which not only looks set to stand him in good stead for many years to come, but has already propelled his talents to a whole new level during 2016. Securing a return to Creamfields in the summer, Julian has taken his power charged sets a step further, with shows at hot spots such as Tokyo and Sapporo and an Asia tour giving him a chance to put his seasoned DJ skills to the test.

With Hardwell being a supporter of his from the start, it seemed only fitting that the World #2 DJ offered him the chance to construct a spellbinding debut album titled ‘Evolve’. Both singles ‘Evolve’ and ‘Cell’ – the first two cuts from the 16 track full-length-soared to take the #2 and #6 positions on the Beatport Chart respectively, sending appetites salivating for this hotly-anticipated release.

Looking forward, Julian’s proficiency in the studio has lead him to start his own collaborative music & art project ‘Involve’, providing his own outlet for creating and sharing his music with fans. Joining forces with Dutch design artist Sander Overmeer, Julian has been busy making music with Sander’s visual art pieces, interacting with his fans and livestreaming the process. With an exciting array of new material already making waves over on big Youtube channels like Trap City, Mr Suicide Sheep and influential Soundcloud channels, this new, unique way of making music marks another highlight in the journey of Julian as a forward thinking artist.

Expanding his sound to bass-music territories, Julian has gained support by the likes of Martin Garrix, Tiesto, Ookay, Dyro and Afrojack. His Cell (2017 Trap Reboot) is used as the theme song for the Ultra Miami livestream and has been heard by millions online. With a lot of new releases planned for this year, Julian is set out to have a bright and evolving future.
