From the Backseat with Death Cab for Cutie

Ben gibbard had a scorpion in his pants.

death cab for cutie tour bus

Welcome to From the Backseat, the new column where I ask musicians to tell me a story about a crazy thing that happened to them on the road and they just trust that I won’t sprinkle in some libel while retelling it to you because I’m bored.

The life of a touring musician is glamorized and mythologized to pieces. It would probably be more constructive to dismantle that with a column about finding a laundromat in Akron, OH at 3 am on a Wednesday because touring is bleeding money and the music industry needs some help. But I want weird stories! I want Are You Afraid Of The Dark? but instead of scary it’s ridiculous! I want to hear about a scorpion stinging someone in their pants twenty minutes before opening for a songwriting legend.

That is exactly what happened to Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie and the Postal Service. Death Cab is on the tail end of a month-long US tour in support of their new album Asphalt Meadows so while they continued to traverse the country I got on the phone with Gibbard and demanded to hear all the gory, arachnidy details and scribbled down some notes so I could share his story with you, from his perspective.

It’s 2008 and Death Cab for Cutie is opening for Neil Young, doing about three weeks. It was as amazing as you would expect it to be, and yes I chose this story so I could humble-brag about opening for Neil Young.

During this time I was in the process of moving to LA to be with my then-fiancée and was essentially living there other than when I was on the road. We had just played a show in the Southwest with Neil before a date in San Diego, and because I’m codependent I decided to fly back to LA to be with my fiancée the day before the San Diego show while the bus drove into town.

On the day of the show, I hopped in my Prius (which I still own) and drove down to San Diego with the intention of driving back to LA after the show. For those of you who haven’t been on a tour bus, the back of the bus is about a four-by-four-foot room with some windows and couches and a closet, where I had hung my show clothes after the last show.

Our set was supposed to start at 7 pm, so at about 6:35 pm I was in the back of the bus with Lucas, our lighting guy, and some of the band, and I grabbed my show clothes to start changing. As I pulled on my pants, I felt something stab my inner thigh repeatedly, like a sewing machine needle.

I screamed and threw off the pants, and a scorpion about the size of a quarter scurried across the floor. Lucas quickly stomped on it before immediately Googling “scorpion stings” as someone else grabbed the EMTs from the arena.

Look. These are EMTs from a San Diego venue. They had no idea what to do about a scorpion. They were basically like, “Okay, so if you start feeling like you’re going to die, just come offstage and we’ll stand side-stage just in case.” It was 6:45 pm; we went on in 15 minutes.

The best part? Lucas, in his frantic Googling, had found out that the smaller the scorpion, the more venomous the sting.

We go onstage, and a weird thing starts to happen. I swear to God, I felt like I had scorpion powers. You know that feeling when you use one of the head-scratcher things and it feels euphoric and shivery? It felt like that. I know you’re going to laugh at me, but it was incredible.

I was also opening for Neil Young and there was adrenaline, probably, but still.

I still decided to drive back to LA that night, and I felt like I had some psychedelic euphoria tunnel vision going back.

When we talked to our bus driver about it later, he explained that when they had stopped somewhere in Arizona he had opened up the windows of the bus to air out all the man funk. Being from the Southwest, he explained that scorpions love anywhere moist and dark.

So what that means is that this scorpion crawled into the bus and decided that my disgusting, sweaty pants were the perfect place to be and then it just stayed there as our bus took him away from his scorpion family or whoever he hung out with, only to be rudely awoken by some gigantic pale leg invading his space.

The last night of the tour, during the last song of our set, Neil’s crew and some of his band threw a bunch of toy scorpions at me onstage. When I told him about it later, he just looked at me and said, “Far out, man.”

[Author’s note: Lol, it could have gotten his nuts.]

Death Cab For Cutie & The Postal Service’s Once-In-A-Lifetime Show

Maybe you were here for Death Cab or The Postal Service, but on Tuesday night we were reliving both together.

I was 14 when I first heard The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights.” It was 2009 and I had just started high school, and I found it late one night while browsing YouTube. It was one of the first songs I uploaded onto my first iPod touch which I got for my birthday that year and lugged around everywhere with me but most faithfully on the bus to and from school, finding refuge from the daily perils of teendom via my headphones. The song’s bouncy and bright beats were a new thing to my radio-trained ears: soothing and refined and clean with a sheen of nostalgia. A few clicks over on my iPod there was another song I was liking at the moment, Death Cab for Cutie’s “Transatlanticism.” I had no real problems in my life at the time but these songs let me pretend that I did. I’d listen and think about the days when heartbreak and long distance would come for me, and let the pang of the words he was singing hit even harder.

It was an embarrassingly long time before I learned the bands were fronted by the same guy (I’m talking years, years, years , later): a brain-melting revelation to me that came with implications that only seemed to pull into sharp focus Tuesday night, Sept. 19, at Ben Gibbard’s dual Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service show at Madison Square Garden marking the 20th anniversary of Transatlanticism and Give Up , two seminal indie records that were released during different seasons of the same year, 2003.

I and tens of thousands of other around-30-year-old millennials shuffled into the arena to witness what felt like a once-in-a-lifetime show that would merge two separate pasts and legacies. Maybe you were here for just one over the other, but tonight we were reliving both together.

At 9 p.m. on the dot the lights dimmed and Gibbard and his Death Cab band ran out dressed like it was still 2009: in black button downs only beaten in tightness by their pants (which were also black and very skinny). The crowd (still largely sitting) politely swayed and bopped through the first few songs of the album before coming to life for “The Sound Of Settling.” Loud whoops followed for the first big anthem of the night, “Transatlanticism,” which warranted Gibbard ditching his guitar and the illumination of single blue spotlight.

It felt miraculous that the music sounded like a straight rip from my iPod, the steady climb of guitar and drums on “Transatlanticism” reaching the same sublime, deafening levels live. I had joked beforehand that these songs would make me cry. But in real time the emotional impact of the songs had blunted. They were more like artifacts, something to gaze at from a distance; Gibbard’s voice, which has understandably aged, gathering wrinkles over the years, only heightened that sensation.

That only continued into The Postal Service’s set, which brought Gibbard, in a new band formation with Jenny Lewis, Dntel, and a few overlapping Death Cab members, back on stage after a 15 minute intermission. Now dressed in all white, with Lewis in an elegant caped Rodarte gown that billowed in the artificial wind, they bounded into “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” in front of a much more enthusiastic crowd. In the history of The Postal Service they’d only played these songs live a handful of times, and this tour was the first since 2013. In turn, these songs felt even more precious.

It’s a strange thing being at an event that’s fueled solely by the culture of nostalgia. Much of the night for me was spent oscillating between past and the present, particularly during “Such Great Heights” which brought the biggest rise of the night; phones went up; a woman not much older than me a few seats down could only hold her hand over her mouth. Gibbard knew what was required of him and delivered the indie frontman knee-knocking dance. Every word was sung back religiously.

I flash-backed to the bus rides; after the show, my friend recounted his vivid memories of listening to Give Up outside his high school, his head laying on his backpack, eyes closed. I imagined everyone else getting transported to some moment long ago when “Such Great Heights” imprinted itself on their life (is there a German word for that?).

There was also the sense of witnessing two separate Gibbards finally merging into one: the men who unknowingly made the formative songs of my youth in two different outfits, was really just one master at wringing out emotion from any sort of sound, whether guitar or electronic.

For a tour built around the past, there was little reminiscing on Gibbard’s part. He spoke little, and the most he said about the songs were packaged as small quips. (“All these songs are true stories except for this one,” he said before Death Cab’s “Death of an Interior Decorator.”) The closest he ever got to something more emotional was towards the end of the Postal Service set, when he remarked in awe at playing MSG. “This is a tiny, tiny record we made 20 years ago, for what we thought would be for 5,000 people,” he said. But that felt enough. Everyone seemed to know that the evening was more for us — most of all Gibbard.

“A lot of our music has marked time in people’s lives. It’s not because we’re so amazing, it’s because we make music,” he told the New York Times recently. “And music marks time.”

Share story

MESA, Ariz. — On the road with Seattle’s latest musical sensation, Death Cab for Cutie …

Directly behind the stage of the Mesa Amphitheater is an area the size of a small lobby. Two round tables are set up, and friends of the bands snack on pizzas. There are a few alcoholic beverages consumed, but it is a sober, low-key, preconcert environment.

As the twang-pop band Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins performs, the members of Death Cab gather in a small dressing room. When the Lewis set ends, at around 7:45 p.m., technicians race to reset the stage, unloading trunk after trunk of gear. Around 8:10, Ben Gibbard, Chris Walla, Nick Harmer and Jason McGerr emerge from the dressing room, gathering in the now-darkened backstage. They trade a few light-hearted comments, then — when the house lights are turned off and the crowd howls expectantly — the Death Cabbers shift gears into nervous solemnity.

“Have a good show, guys,” says Gibbard, stretching out his neck.

“You too, Ben,” answers Harmer, jumping up and down in place.

Mark Duston, the tour manager, flicks on two flashlights to guide the way. And Death Cab takes the stage.

Ladies and gentlemen …

7:30 p.m. Saturday, KeyArena, Seattle Center; $29.50 (206-628-0888 or www.ticketmaster.com ).

“405,” from the 2000 album “We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes,” opens the show and is followed quickly by “Your Heart Is an Empty Room” from the gold-selling “Plans.”

The opening chords of “The New Year,” from the “Transatlanticism” album and one of Death Cab’s most rocking songs, grabs the audience’s collective attention. The average age of the audience is around 20; two-thirds is female, many with the sorority look, others suggesting earnest young poets or art students. Some are obviously there to socialize, but most are paying rapt attention; every few rows, someone is quietly singing along to every song.

Unlike shows in years past, this is very businesslike, with little between-song banter. The band seems determined to give fans their money’s worth, and rolls quickly from one song to the next. When there are equipment changes, such as when Walla and Gibbard take turns playing piano on subsequent songs (“Crooked Teeth” and “Summer Skin,” both from “Plans”), the band members scamper around the stage, eager not to waste precious time.

With Death Cab, even the band’s relatively obscure songs are favorites of some audience members. As the band begins “We Looked Like Giants,” one young lady exclaims, “This is a [expletive] great song!”

After the set-closing song “Trans-

atlanticism,” the four musicians rush off stage toward the dressing room. Moments later, with the crowd pleading for more, Gibbard strides back toward the stage, where he will perform the first encore song solo. A few dozen fans are waving lighters, many more holding cellphones aloft (to take pictures, record or share the moment with a friend) as Gibbard sings the riveting “Plans” song “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.”

Earlier this year, Gibbard sang that song as a duo with Elvis Costello for a VH1 Classic special. Now his partner is the audience, singing along to this dark, stirring love story.

After that, the other three Death Cabbers return to the stage, and rise to the challenge of following “I Will Follow You,” with “Marching Bands of Manhattan.”

Gibbard then introduces the next selection: “We want to play a song from a band from Tacoma, Washington — the greatest band ever from the Pacific Northwest. They’re called the Sonics.” And they launch into a raucous cover of “I’m Going Home” by the legendary ’60s garage band.

The Arizona concert ends with “The Sound of Settling” (from “Transatlanticism”), and Walla impishly telling the crowd, “See you soon — keep in touch.”

Thank you very much!

After the show, members of the Lewis band are munching on Mexican food as Death Cab again gathers in the dressing room for a quick post-show meeting. A few minutes later, the band emerges, one by one. Harmer heads for the tour bus. McGerr picks at the Mexican food. Gibbard rolls over on a wheeled office chair and pours himself a drink. One at a time, Walla and Gibbard come over for interviews.

Tour manager Duston cuts short Gibbard’s chat — time to hit the road. He leads Gibbard in a looping walk to the bus, to avoid a group of fans gathered by the exit. On the plush bus (a far cry from the dilapidated vans Death Cab once used to hobble around the country), the four band members and their tour manager bid goodbye to a few friends; nibble snacks; and prepare to hit their bunks, where they would try to get a few hours’ sleep on the drive to Las Vegas. From there: sold-out shows in Southern and Northern California, before Saturday’s tour-closing concert at the Key.

As the bus engine warms up, a dozen or so fans huddle at the parking-lot gate, desperate for one last glance of Death Cab for Cutie.

Death Cab For Cutie Announce A Slew Of July Tour Dates

Adrian Spinelli

Death Cab For Cutie already had a a handful of festival dates on the docket in 2022, but now they’ve added a full slate of July tour dates in the midwest and Northeastern US.

The prolific rock band from Seattle has nine studio albums under their belt and last year, released an impressive 20th anniversary edition of The Photo Album. What stands out about these newly announced dates (where Illuminati Hotties will be on board as direct support) is how Ben Gibbard and company are playing many cities that don’t typically get the major tour love. While the tour begins in Cincinnati, the final stops include Harrisburg, PA, Uncasville, CT, and Poughkeepsie, NY. Because who says fans are only in major cities, amiright? Props to Death Cab for showing love to cities surrounding America’s bustling metropolitan centers as well.

Excited to announce some July tour dates! @illuminatihotts will be opening these new shows. Also looking forward to @minitreesband supporting in April! Presale for July shows starts 3/9 at 10am local, sign up on https://t.co/5eeVmyJU2X for the code. All other shows on sale now! pic.twitter.com/Gbtl2hpiI6 — Death Cab for Cutie (@dcfc) March 7, 2022
