Finally, the time-trial aspect of the bike is one that we did not expect to be so good. Yes, the standard design of the bike might make it better suited for road cyclists, but when you flip the handlebars and omit some of the spacers, you will attain a lower position.

The lower position is best for achieving the important aerodynamic position.

When looking at all of these features, you get a sense that Trek is trying to create a high-end bike that would allow riders to ride comfortably at a performance level without spending as much .

In essence, the weight is the only thing that often drags it down, and if the bike lost about 5-pounds, you might be paying double the price.

There's a huge range to choose from at this price, from commuting cycles to long-distance tourers, but if you're looking for something a little lighter and sportier you'll be pleased to know that for around £500 you can buy a machine that'll easily cope with distance rides such as sportives, as well as your day to day cycling, with a good dose of style thrown in.

Frame >The Trek frame is based on 7005 series aluminium tubing with butted main tubes and is 1,551g in the 56cm size tested. The welding is plain without any smoothing of the joins, and the paint and decals are an improvement on the previous year's model. We like the neatly executed mudguard bridge detailing between the chainstays.

The distinctive and unusual forward-sloping top-tube (it's higher at the seatpost) is an aspect of the 1000-1500 series that you'll either like or loathe, but the short head-tube enables a low riding position for time trialling that simply isn't possible on the Specialized with its taller head-tube. The handlebar height can be altered considerably by flipping the stem through 180 degrees to point upwards, and further adjustments can be effected in small increments by using the headset spacers provided. The inclusion of rack and mudguard eyes is a major plus point as far as versatility for commuting and general cycling is concerned, meaning that this frame is a good all-rounder.

> Equipment >Given that the £500 price point is largely focused on those who are just getting into their cycling, it is appropriate that Trek have specified the SL1000 with a triple chainset, because the range of gears this provides is more important than the small weight saving of a double chainset. The anatomic 'pistol grip' handlebars have a slightly deeper and lower bend than those of the Specialized, and the radically sloping stem provides a greater than average range of handlebar height settings, though it doesn't win points for style. The Shimano Sora levers work well with your hands rested on the hoods, but it's a long reach to the brake hood button levers when your hands are on the drops.

>An eight-speed Shimano cassette means the transition to a smaller gear is a noticeably bigger step than with a 10-speed system, but the testers felt that it hardly affected their ability to maintain a constant pedalling cadence on undulating roads.

> > Wheels >The Trek wheels are of the traditional variety in using 32 spokes per wheel, laced in a 3-cross pattern to strong, reputable Alex rims - each spoke is crossed by two others, between hub and rim - with unbranded but smooth-running hubs. This year's wheels are 115g heavier per pair than those of the previous year's model that were outwardly similar but used Rigida Chrina rims instead. Trek have retained the tried and trusted Bontrager Select tyres that are probably the best budget tyre we have come across for vertical compliance, and they grip tenaciously in the wet. Their slightly larger 25mm width means they are more resistant to pinch punctures than 23mm tyres, but they'll need to be changed for a 23mm tyre if mudguards are to be fitted to provide enough clearance.

> Handling

The Trek's butted tubes make for a lively performance out on the road and were it not for the weight of the components, this could easily be confused with a bike costing twice the price. There really is very little to criticise when ridden on the flat, but at a shade under 21lb its bulk, which is mainly centred on the wheels, makes it harder for the rider to change tempo on a climb. That said, the fun and lively nature of the ride makes you want to take the long way home on a warm balmy summer evening.

Though odd looking, the system of using spacers stacked to give the greatest handlebar height didn't cause our testers any worries, and the time triallists will warm to the fact that the spacers can be omitted completely to get a low, aerodynamic riding position. > > Verdict

The Trek won our budget race bike of 2006 award by virtue of its versatility and now receives a carbon seatpost, but it's 115g heavier overall because of the new wheels. Compared to the previous model year, the Specialized has seen the biggest raft of improvements which, like the Trek, include a carbon seatpost in place of an aluminium one, together with a higher spec and marginally lighter wheels. >Iit's hard to ignore the Trek's inclusion of mudguard and rack eyes. These make the it a very versatile bike, a quality that can't be overlooked if the bike is to be used year-round for different types of riding. If versatility is your bag, the Trek should be right up your street.

Trek Bicycle Corporation, established in 1976 by Richard Burke and Bevil Hogg, is a prominent bicycle manufacturer headquartered in Waterloo, Wisconsin, USA. Starting in a small red barn with steel touring frames, Trek has evolved into one of the leading global bike producers, distributing in over 90 countries.

Trek has consistently led in cycling innovations. Key milestones include the 1984 debut of the bonded aluminum Trek 2000 frame, the 1992 launch of the first carbon fiber mountain bike (Trek 9800), the 1999 introduction of the first full-suspension carbon fiber mountain bike (Trek Fuel), and in 2012, the unveiling of the first full-suspension 29er carbon fiber mountain bike (Trek Superfly).

Although Trek no longer sells this bike you can find it quite easily on second-hand websites. While researching for this review I came across around a dozen similar bikes on eBay. They ranged in price from $100 to $250.

The prices will now depend mainly on the age and condition of the parts/paint. These bikes are flexible and will accept off-brand parts if you ever want to resurrect one.

Competing Products

The Trek SL 1000 is a relatively affordable road bike designed for everyday use. It's no longer widely available but Trek kept it simple and reliable with the parts and construction.

There's a large market for bikes like this as they're perfect for adults who aren't fully into road bikes. They can be used for a trip to the shops or commuting to work.

Trek is a “young” bike brand with over 40 years of experience, but many cycling enthusiasts adore them because of their consistent rational thinking and continuous research in the field of cycling.

This is a comprehensive review of the nostalgic Trek 1000 road bike from Best Bike Select. What are the characteristics of the Trek 1000 road bike, an old bike that has been researched over time?

What are the advantages and disadvantages, and what new road bikes are a good substitute? Are you in a hurry? Let’s get this party started.

Stylish design (5/5).

The Trek 1000’s exterior design is similar to that of modern road bikes. The bike was first released in the 1980s, but it gained popularity in the mid-1990s.

Of course, its configuration is constantly being updated, and I haven’t been able to find any information on the configuration of the Trek 1000’s first generation. The most recent version dates from 2000 onwards.

This is extremely frustrating for me, but I still like the way the bike looks. At the time, the white paint with the old Trek logo was very fashionable.

Aluminum frame and fork (4.0/5)

At the time, the 6061 aluminum frame was introduced, and many low-cost bikes still use this process with pride.

It was conceivable when Trek began using it 25 years ago. The aluminum frame is also much stronger and more durable than the steel frame, and it does not require any maintenance.

Tange Cro-Moly frame with TIG Welded Aero Multi-Crown fork. When compared to road bikes of the same era, these accessories are already very good. And, according to many forum comments about the Trek 1000, there are few users who complain about its frame and fork.

Of course, some users believe that it is still a little heavy in the current state. When compared to today’s carbon fiber, it is indeed a little heavier.

Shifters on modern bikes are located above the handlebars, but the Trek 1000’s shifters are located below the handlebars. This is bad news for riders who have gotten used to shifting over the handlebars. It takes some time to get used to the shifting style of the Trek 1000.

The Trek 1000 after 2000 has its own carbon fiber fork and is lighter in weight. Then there are the tires, which can be replaced with race tires to significantly improve race performance. The shorter forward-leaning top tube is unsuitable for riders who are not particularly tall.

However, you can gain an advantage in the countdown sprint. There won’t be much of a performance advantage over today’s race road bikes, but it’s still a great choice for commuting.

What is hydroforming?

Proven effective in the world of high-end performance automobiles, hydroforming is the process of injecting fluid into a cylindrical frame tube to manipulate it into a more beneficial shape. Hydroforming allows Trek engineers to bring complex aluminum frame designs, especially those with advanced aerodynamic properties, from the drawing board to the production line. I rode one of those frames for a while and they are surprisingly comfortable for an aluminum frame,but don't feel as efficient/stiff as say a Cannondale of the same vintage.It seems aluminum frames that avoid the use of fat diameter tubes usually have a fairly comfortable ride but are not as efficient for climbing or racing as the frames with large diameter tubes.

I don't know if there was any real problem but every seam between lugs and tubes had a crack in the paint all the way around the joint. I mean every single one! Not abused, and the bike probably had less than 500 miles in 17 years time. Trek was great in that they warrantied the frame no questions asked.

Rough Aluminum I don't think the material has any bearing on the "ride quality" of a bike per se, it's how the material is used and designed. Is the bike for long distance rides? Aluminum got a bad rap because Cannondale, at the time, were making criterium style bikes which tended to favor stiffness over comfort (hench the large diameter tubing).

My 1987 1500 is still going strong. Bought it while in college and never could part with it. It's been updated with 105 9spd components and new Mavic Open Pro wheels.  

late 80-early 90's cannondale I had a cannondale critirium with huge tubes it nearly rattled me to death. it was fun to buzz around town but thats it.  

I had an 1100. The bonded frame tubes and lugs were designed by Trek to mimic the ride of a steel frame - Klien was busy suing those who made them stiffer. I liked the ride of my bike and upgraded to RSX STI shifters before giving the bike to my nephew. My downtube shifter lugs delaminated and the shop epoxy/screwed new ones on under the lifetime warranty. A friend with a bonded CF 2300 got a new frame (5000 series?) when his tubes came unglued.  

I still have my Trek 2000 frame i built with ultegra 600 back in 88-89. It is white and red decals with internal cable routing. The only problem i had with it is the rattling noise the calbe makes when i hit pot holes but the frame was really strong even i had a couple of minor crashes with it. Now i'm was thinking of putting a new wheel (130mm) on the rear, i checked that it will fit but spreading the rear stays but i'm weary if the stress on the frame will break the rear stays. Anyone here have tried using an 130mm width hub rear wheel?  

i got a wicked good deal on a trek 2000 with dura ace derailleurs just last week. I think it might be an '87 model. anyways i only test rode it, paid the guy, and then took it home to take apart and clean right away... i actually liked the ride better than my aluminum orbea. No cracks on any of the seams. I just need to finish cleaning and then re-tape the bars and do a few cable adjustments but I'm real excited about it. I'll post after a few real rides and give a better review.

Hi, all. I'm an old guy who's new here. Have been off the bike a few years, now it's time to get back on. Have an old co-motion fillet brazed frame w/8 speed DA. Have an 86 or 7 Trek 2000 I got back 6 years after it was stolen, It was the most comfortable bike I'd ever ridden AND it was stiff while remaining livlely. It showed its true colors on a 900 miles in 8 days sagged "tour" / training ride. What a joy to ride! So, I want to put it back on the road. With a 126mm rear axle spacing, that could be difficult, yes?. If the forthcoming shop inspection doesn't become a warranty situation, It looks like old parts are hit and miss. Are there negative consequences from forcing the chainstays apart the required 4 mm? Would that void the frame warranty? Thanks and Cheers! sg

While many of the stays on Treks bikes during this period were intentionally spaced at 128mm to be able to handle 126mm and 130mm hubs (I still have a steel 330 spaced this way), I would only recommend speading the bonded aluminum stays if they are spaced this way (i.e., only a 2mm spread). Otherwise, follow the conventional wisdom of not spreading aluminum stays - my brother spread the stays on his Cannondale 3.0 and the frame cracked (inside driveside chainstay at the BB) about 2-3 months later.  

My 1500 has been spread to 130mm for 7 years without a problem. Maybe it was spaced at 128 originally. It doesnt take much to slip the 130mm hub in.

The bonded Al and CF Treks were some of the strongest bonded frames ever made. I worked in a Trek shop, and never saw a broken one, even 15 years after they quit making them (for cost reasons, not because they were failing.) Aluminum's reputation for a harsh ride is, I think, due to two factors: 1) The bike industry's insistence that frame flex "wastes energy". It doesn't, but that's what they settled on, marketing wise, and the trend was to make frames that were just too stiff. Couple that with the (also incorrect) that skinny tires are more efficient, and you've got a recipe for a nasty ride. 2) This is more of an opinion, but I think that there is a resonance factor at work with large-diameter aluminum frames... they ring like a bell, and that stings the hands. It's similar to the feeling of a four-cylinder motorcycle. They actually vibrate less than a twin or triple, but there's something about the nature of the vibrations that the human hand doesn't like. It's not geometry... my "3.8 Series" Cannondale touring bike is a nasty beast with skinny tires, and it's not a short frame by any stretch. it just takes more tire to tame the high-frequency vibes through the frame. It can't be a damping issue, no metal is a good damper.. it's got to be a resonance problem. I really like the bonded Treks. It's a shame that the technology got such a bad rap back in the early 90's, it could have been developed into some really nice bikes, I think. --Shannon

One of my ex-wives (I have several) had a top-of the-line bonded aluminum Trek with 7400 Dura Ace back in the '80's. Custom built for her as she thought the Ironman was within her reach. I wrenched that bike and rode it (even though it was too small for me) and was always impressed with the combination of ride quality and efficiency (yes, it flexed a bit but it felt like a good steel frame). I just remember Rebecca Twigg kicking everybody's a$$ on the uphill prologue to the now defunct Idaho stage race on one of those "bonded Trek aluminum" bikes. By the way, I personally detest oversize tig-welded aluminum frames. Good for demolition derby crits but not much else.

re: "126mm rear axle spacing" ... Actually some new wheelsets have 126mm spacing, though they advertise as 130. . I got a set with Shimano 105 hubs on Mavic rims at Performance for aout $225 total. All the specs said "130mm" but the rear measured 126mm and fit right in my '89 126mm Cannondale rear. ... Try some new wheels on your older ride. If needed, work out the cassette spacing, i.e. putting 6 or 7 speed cogs on a 8/9/10 freehub. . "Afterall, bikes are essentially two wheels ... the frame just holds them together." A well known frame builder.

Aircraft wings are made of aluminum with bonded truss joints. The 1989 Trek 1000 I still ride has the same construction technology as an aircraft wing. I ride it hard and apply hundreds of pounds of force and stress. Aircraft wings withstand scores of thousands of pounds of stress, load, vibration, and landing shock and depending on annual inspection approval can fly 30 years. For one human to apply enough stress to a TREK 1000 ('80s) Bonded aluminum frame to fatigue it, he would have to ride 100 miles a day for eight lifetimes. And ride hard. And I think the frame would be fine. The tensile strength of T6-6061 Aluminum is 40,000 PSI. The yield point of the bonded joint is stronger. Why? they test it by destruction in a special press and measure the force applied at the break point. The strongest most muscular rider ever measured produced 600 pounds of force on a bike. Forget about it. Is 40,000 a bigger number than 600? Go ride your bike and enjoy the ride.

Huge aluminum smelter in Eastern Kentucky? 1,000-plus job site looming, Beshear says

G ov. Andy Beshear announced $500 million in federal funding Monday to support a sprawling “green aluminum smelter” in Northeastern Kentucky that could provide 1,000 jobs.

However, the project is not finalized and Northeastern Kentucky is one of several potential sites for the project.

In a rare public move, the governor announced that Century Aluminum “plans to potentially build” the first new U.S. primary aluminum smelter in 45 years. Beshear said the plant alone would double the size of the current U.S. primary aluminum industry and avoid an estimated 75% of emissions compared to a traditional smelter.

“The first $500 million towards the construction of this type of facility is something worth celebrating,” Beshear said.

The federal funding comes from the U.S. Department of Energy via the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, which supports several investments in green energy. Both laws have been touted as key achievements during Democratic President Joe Biden’s first term.

It’s part of $6 billion announced Monday on projects aimed at slashing emissions in industrial facilities across the nation.

“Thanks to President Biden’s industrial strategy, DOE is making the largest investment in industrial decarbonization in the history of the United States,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said in a statement. “These investments will slash emissions from these difficult-to-decarbonize sectors and ensure American businesses and American workers remain at the forefront of the global economy.”

When asked if the federal funding was tied to the project coming to Kentucky, a spokesperson for Beshear said that it was a “Kentucky specific award.”

Under “location” for the project, the Department of Energy’s website says the company “prefer(s) Kentucky or Ohio/Mississippi River Basins.”

In the department’s project summary, the department notes, “Century’s preferred site for the Green Aluminum Smelter is in Kentucky,” but that it also continues to “evaluate sites in other states.”

Beshear said his administration worked hard to get the project’s funding approved.

“I‘m pretty excited today because there were literally dozens of trips where we made these requests, from the President to anybody else who would listen,” Beshear said. “This announcement is another step in our continued long standing relationship.”

What is primary aluminum? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it refers to “aluminum produced directly from mined ore.”

Northeastern Kentucky is no stranger to aluminum industry development announcements.

Former Republican Gov. Matt Bevin, who Beshear unseated in 2019, supported a $15 million state investment to Unity Aluminum, formerly Braidy Industries for a $1.7 billion, 500-job rolling mill. It was touted as a much-needed economic jolt for a region that has suffered due in part to the decline of the coal industry.

However, the investment was the source of controversy and criticism because the project never materialized.

The state eventually recouped its $15 million investment .

Unlike Braidy Industries, Century Aluminum is a large, international publicly traded company. Kentucky is already home to two Century Aluminum smelters, both near Owensboro .

Beshear said the project would support “1,000 permanent union jobs with strong wages,” as well as 5,500 construction jobs.

“A very important piece of the puzzle for this complex project has been set thanks to the work of Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear,” Century Aluminum President and CEO Jesse Gary said in a statement.

“Northeast Kentucky is the preferred site location, and while a myriad of steps still needs to be resolved, from costs for development of the sites under consideration, utilities – including all facets of serving the site to cost and rate structure – workforce and incentives among others, we very much appreciate the tireless efforts and great leadership of so many from the commonwealth for achieving this critical milestone,”

Other announcements

Century aluminum was not the only bit of economic development news Beshear announced Monday.

Wieland North America Recycling intends to expand its scrap metal recycling operations in Shelby County. The project there could create “as many as 200 permanent jobs,” according to a news release from Beshear’s office.

Beshear said the project could be bolstered by “up to $270 million” in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.

In 2021, the German company moved its North American headquarters to Louisville.

The department’s release said Wieland planned to engage both Kentucky State University and Simmons College, the state’s two historically black higher education institutions, to create an “internship program for underrepresented STEM students.”

Also in Shelby County, Beshear mentioned that spirits company Diageo intends to “install heat batteries for deep decarbonization” of its Bulleit Bourbon facility. The project would create more than 100 construction jobs.

Beshear also mentioned that ISP Chemicals is “engaging in conversations” to build a chemical production electrification and heat storage project at their Calvert City chemical plant in far Western Kentucky. The projected investment is $70 million.
