Chase Ultimate Rewards
Before moving any further, let’s ensure you’re familiar with the long list of travel protections built into the Chase Sapphire Preferred card :
- Auto rental collision damage waiver
- Baggage delay insurance
- Lost luggage reimbursement
- Travel accident insurance
- Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance
- Trip delay reimbursement
You’ll also enjoy several other cardholder benefits and protections beyond travel insurance :
- Extended warranty protection
- No foreign transaction fees
- Purchase protection
- Roadside dispatch
- Travel and emergency assistance
Some of the benefits seem more obvious than others. And, as with all insurance, there are always specific terms to understand, exclusions to mind, and coverage limits . Let’s clear some of those up.
When flying, you’ll have 2 types of insurance: travel accident insurance and trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Both types are in effect for trips for which you paid at least a portion of the cost with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Let’s look at each benefit.
Travel Accident Insurance
Travel accident insurance applies to you and your immediate family members if one of you becomes permanently injured or dies while traveling. The cardholder benefit guide lists specific dollar amounts that you can be paid for specific injury types. The coverage is further divided into 2 categories: traveling on a common carrier and 24-hour coverage .
Coverage related to a common carrier covers both injuries and death resulting from your travel on a licensed air, land, or sea transport that regularly carries paying passengers . Think planes and ferries, for example. You’ll also be covered while at an airport, terminal, or station immediately before or after a trip, including courtesy transport to or from these places if provided as part of your trip. If your flight booking includes the airline picking you up from the hotel, this could be covered if all other conditions are met.
The 24-hour coverage applies around the clock and is valid on trips of up to 30 days. If you take a trip longer than this, coverage will end 1 minute after midnight on the 31st day, though it would come back into effect when you are in transportation to the airport for your flight home. If you drive yourself to the airport, coverage should resume once you are inside the airport .
Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance
This benefit reimburses you for the money you lose when a trip paid for (in whole or part) with your card is interrupted or canceled. Trip interruption is when you’ve started the trip and must end it early for a covered reason; trip cancellation applies to canceling a trip before it begins. The maximum benefit payout here is $10,000 per person and up to $20,000 per trip. Both the cardholder and immediate family members are covered.
Trip cancellation coverage begins when you make your first deposit toward the trip and ends when you depart on your scheduled departure date. Trip interruption starts on your scheduled departure date and ends on your scheduled return date. However, if these dates or times are adjusted for reasons beyond your or the carrier’s control, the benefit will adjust automatically .
What expenses are reimbursable? They include nonrefundable, prepaid travel expenses by a licensed supplier, such as a travel agency, hotel, shore excursion agency, etc. When canceling for a covered reason, you’re also covered for redeposit fees to get your airline miles back. Unfortunately, this benefit doesn’t cover lost money you paid for tickets to shows or theme parks, tee times at golf courses, museums, or other entrance fees unless they’re part of a tour package.
You’ll be covered for a few more situations with trip interruption coverage only . These include fees for returning a rental car early or to the nearest facility and up to $250 of expenses to transport you for necessary medical treatment. However, that doesn’t include medical transport (such as ambulances or medevac).
What if you paid with Chase Ultimate Rewards points and are due a refund under these benefits? You’ll be reimbursed according to the value on your travel supplier’s confirmation receipt, assuming that’s listed. If there’s no trip value listed on the receipt after you paid with points, you’ll be reimbursed at a value of 1 cent per point.
Covered Reasons
Not every reason for canceling a trip or ending it early is covered under these benefits. Covered reasons include accidental death or injury, a sickness requiring hospitalization, severe weather, a named storm warning, a change in military orders, a subpoena or call to jury duty, your home being burglarized or becoming uninhabitable, your hotel becoming uninhabitable, a public transportation strike that makes you miss 20% of a trip or a scheduled tour departure, and more. Consult the Chase Sapphire Preferred card benefits guide to see if your specific cancellation or interruption reason is covered.
Trip cancellation insurance doesn’t cover everything. For example, changing your mind about a trip is not covered. If your plans are subject to change, you may want to purchase Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance .
This part is a bit confusing, but yes. Chase’s benefits guide for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card states explicitly that cruise lines aren’t included in the definition of a “common carrier.” However, cruise lines are included in the definition of a “travel supplier.”
Why does this matter? Many of the trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits only apply to travel with a common carrier, which doesn’t include cruise lines. However, some benefits do apply to cruises . These include stolen luggage benefits or even canceling a trip if delays mean you’ll miss at least 20% of the trip or that you’ll miss the departure of your cruise ship.
The travel accident and injury benefits also apply while you’re cruising, but it’s worth noting that returning late to your cruise ship, only to find it’s left for the next island without you, isn’t a covered expense. You’ll be on your own for the costs of catching up to your ship.
There are 2 types of baggage protection here: coverage for delayed bags and coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage. Baggage delay insurance covers up to $100 per day for up to 5 days when your bags are delayed by at least 6 hours, covering each additional 24 hours past that until the maximum of 5 days is reached. This benefit applies to you and your immediate family members when you pay for at least part of your trip with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. You don’t need to be traveling with your immediate family members for them to be covered , as long as at least part of their trip was paid for with your card, which can be a nice perk if you book travel for relatives.
Coverage begins on the scheduled departure date and ends on the scheduled return date, though coverage adjusts automatically if there are changes outside your or the travel provider’s control. There’s also a list of non-covered items, such as medical devices, losses due to war/conflict, electronics, and cash equivalents. In case of baggage delay, you must report it to the travel provid er as soon as possible and keep receipts for necessary expenses you incur ; you’ll submit these for reimbursement afterward.
Lost luggage reimbursement is different; it covers lost, stolen, or damaged luggage during your trip. Both checked and carry-on bags are covered up to a maximum of $3,000 per person per trip. However, there’s a limit of $500 for jewelry, watches, and electronics.
There are some specifics to understand about this coverage, however. First, it doesn’t cover items you leave behind by accident . Second, coverage applies to you and immediate family members (even if you aren’t traveling with them) so long as you paid for at least part of the trip with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Coverage is available from the scheduled start to the scheduled end of your trip, but it is automatically adjusted if there are uncontrollable delays to either date.
Coverage applies to common carriers and cruise lines, and you must report the loss, theft, or damage within the timeframe specified by your travel provider. Then, the coverage on your Chase Sapphire Preferred card will cover any difference in the value of your monetary loss (after depreciation of the items) and the payment you receive from the travel provider . Thus, this is secondary coverage. It’s worth noting that documents, furs, tickets, and cash-like items aren’t covered.
Accidents can happen on any trip, from accidentally slipping on the wet deck of a cruise ship to spending nights in a hospital at a far-flung destination. Does your health insurance at home cover you when you head to Florida? What about South America? These are questions worth asking. If your medical coverage won’t be in effect, it’s worth considering medical travel insurance .
The Chase Sapphire Preferred card includes travel accident insurance for you and your immediate family members . It’s in effect if you pay at least part of the airfare for your trip with this card. You’ll receive varying maximum payouts depending on the type of injury (or death) encountered during your trip, and the maximum limit also depends on whether the accident occurs while traveling on a common carrier or at some other point during your trip . The 24-hour benefit provides maximum coverage of $100,000, increasing to $500,000 when traveling on a common carrier.
But how does this work in practice?
If more than 1 person is injured , the benefits administrator will pay no more than 2 times the maximum limit for each type of injury. That sum will be divided among all covered persons eligible for benefits payments.
In case of death , the benefits administrator will give the money to your named beneficiary. If you haven’t named a beneficiary, the order of preference goes from a spouse or domestic partner to children, then parents, siblings, and finally, your estate. If you go missing and haven’t been found after a year, then this will trigger the “loss of life” benefit.
Coverage begins either when you reach the airport, station, or terminal for travel on a common carrier or when you enter courtesy transportation provided to take you to the point at which your trip begins, such as a train station or airport. If you didn’t buy your tickets in advance but are purchasing them when you arrive at the station, coverage begins once you make the payment for travel. Coverage ends after you leave the transportation vessel or exit the courtesy transportation provided afterward.
The 24-hour coverage functions a bit differently. It’s in effect around the clock for up to 30 days, starting from your scheduled departure for air travel. If your trip is longer than 30 days, coverage will pause 1 minute after midnight on the 31st day and resume when you reach the airport for a flight home or are in courtesy transportation to the airport for the flight home.
Obviously, there are exclusions. You aren’t covered if you’re a pilot or crew member on a flight, you get injured while committing a crime, you get injured while skydiving, your injury is self-inflicted, or you’re injured in a war.
Lastly, you may wonder how COVID-19 factors in . The benefits guide says this under covered losses: “Quarantine of you or your traveling companion imposed by a physician or a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction, due to health reasons.”
Thus, your illness could be covered if a doctor or government requires quarantine related to COVID-19. COVID-19 is generally covered under most travel insurance policies in the same way sicknesses are covered. However, not traveling to avoid COVID-19 risks isn’t covered. As the benefits guide says, “Your disinclination to travel, a country closing its borders, or a travel supplier canceling or changing travel arrangements due to an epidemic or pandemic.”
Hotels aren’t treated separately under the Chase Sapphire Preferred card travel insurance terms. If you must cancel or interrupt a trip for a covered reason, then your hotel cancellation fees can be covered. This would include situations like forfeiting a first night’s room cost for canceling your hotel booking at the last minute, assuming you couldn’t arrive for a covered reason, such as a travel delay or a last-minute injury that made you unable to travel.
While you won’t find the word “Airbnb” or even “vacation home” in the benefits guide, you will find a description that covers these types of rentals :
“Provider of Lodging – a hotel, inn, motel, bed and breakfast, or hostel; a Provider of Lodging includes non–commercial time shares, condominiums, or rentals of a private residence; such rental shall require a written contract between You and the property owner or management company, executed in advance of the commencement of the rental period …” Chase Sapphire Preferred card benefits guide.
So long as you’ve reserved your rental in advance and have a written contract — which Airbnb provides at the time of booking, courtesy of your confirmation details — your vacation home rental should count as a type of lodging. The contract must state the cancellation provisions, must not include a rental of more than 60 days, and your booking must be made directly with a licensed website or agent — not with the homeowner directly (unless that person is a licensed agent).
Airbnb is a covered lodging type, meaning your booking should qualify for trip interruption, trip cancellation, and trip delay coverage .
In short, yes. However, there are some exclusions. Since your personal auto insurance policy may not cover you abroad, it’s great to know that paying with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card and declining the rental company’s collision damage waiver can provide protection on your next rental .
You can be covered up to the actual cash value of most rental cars against theft or collision damage. Coverage can include administrative fees, loss-of-use charges, and even towing charges. Coverage applies to rentals up to 31 days and covers you plus any additional drivers listed on the rental contract .
You’ll need to use your card (or your points) to pay for the entire cost of the rental , and most vehicle types are covered by this primary insurance. However, coverage doesn’t apply to exotic or antique cars, high-value vehicles, cargo vehicles, motorcycles, RVs, or vans with seating for more than 9 people (including the driver). Note that Teslas qualify as high-value vehicles, so these aren’t covered .
The benefits guide doesn’t spell out any specific excluded countries . However, Visa typically excludes coverage in Israel, Jamaica, and Northern Ireland, plus you may not be able to use your card to pay for a rental (and thus coverage won’t be in effect) with U.S. Treasury Department monetary embargoes . These destinations include places where your credit cards won’t work, such as Cuba, Sudan, Syria, and North Korea.
Unfortunately, no. Because Turo and Zipcar rentals aren’t considered rentals from a rental car agency, most credit card rental car insurance doesn’t cover them .
To file a claim, you should first gather all of the documents related to your claim . These can include receipts, accident reports, police reports, photos, hospital records, or anything else pertinent to the type of claim you’re making.
Next, you can call the benefits administrator at 866-390-9735 or visit eclaimsline.com to submit online . Different claims have different required timelines. For example, auto claims must be filed within 100 days of the incident. However, you need to file within 90 days for baggage delays or losses, but you’re supposed to contact the benefits administrator within 20 days of these incidents to at least provide notice, even though you have 90 days to finish submitting the claim.
This question will be subjective, and different people will arrive at different conclusions. Travel insurance can be useful for the unexpected, but no 2 trips are equal. The best way to decide whether you need additional insurance beyond what the Chase Sapphire Preferred card offers is to look at what it doesn’t cover.
Will you be skydiving? Do you have significant trip expenses related to Turo rentals or short connections that could cause domino effects if you miss a departure time? Are you renting an RV or going camping — types of travel not covered by the Chase Sapphire Preferred card?
If you have prepaid, nonrefundable expenses that wouldn’t be reimbursed by your credit card’s travel insurance in the event of delays or cancellations, getting a travel insurance policy that covers these could be a good idea and could provide peace of mind. That said, not every travel activity is covered by every travel insurance policy, so you want to make sure you choose a policy that covers your expenses for your particular trip .
If you look at your trip and decide that your flights, hotel plans, and simple plan of just relaxing at the beach will be covered by the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, then purchasing an extra policy probably isn’t necessary.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred card offers numerous protections for purchases and trips. Insurance terms can feel confusing, but hopefully, the explanations of these policies should clarify what is and isn’t covered, as well as policy limits, in a way that helps you know whether the coverages are sufficient for your upcoming travels.

"$50 Annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit" means the statement credit that is automatically applied to your account annually on hotel accommodation purchases made using your card through Chase Travel, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50. "Annually" means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account open date anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. 3 points ("3X points"): You'll earn 3 points for each $1 spent on purchases in the following rewards categories: dining at restaurants including takeout and eligible delivery services; select streaming services; online grocery (excluding Target ® , Walmart ® and wholesale clubs). 1 point ("1X points"): You'll earn 1 point for each $1 spent on all other purchases. 10% anniversary points bonus: Each account anniversary year, you'll earn bonus points that equal 10% of your total spend in points from purchases made with your credit card during the previous account anniversary year at a rate of 1 point for each $1 spent. "Account anniversary year" means the year beginning with your account open date through the anniversary of your account open date, and each 12 months after that. 5 total points ("5X points") on qualifying Lyft rides through 03/2025: You'll earn an additional 3 points for each $1 spent when your card is used for qualifying Lyft products and services purchased through the Lyft mobile application through 03/31/2025. Qualifying Lyft products and services include rides taken in Classic, Shared, Lux, or XL modes; bike and scooter rides; and subscription and membership products. Purchase of gift cards, car rentals, vehicle service centers, miscellaneous fees and other Lyft products and services are excluded from this promotion. Future Lyft products or services may not be eligible for additional points. You may see "5X" in marketing materials to refer to the 3 points in addition to the 2 points earned on travel purchases (see above). The additional 3 points will appear on your billing statement in a separate line from the 2 points. Lyft is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, Chase benefits or services. How you can use your points: You can use your points to redeem for any available reward options, including cash, gift cards, travel, and pay with points for products or services made available through the program or directly from third parties. Redemption values for reward options vary. Points expiration/losing points: Your points don't expire as long as your account remains open, however, you will immediately lose all your points if your account status changes, or your account is closed for program misuse, fraudulent activities, failure to pay, bankruptcy, or other reasons described in the terms of the Rewards Program Agreement. Rewards Categories: Merchants who accept Visa/Mastercard credit cards are assigned a merchant code, which is determined by the merchant or its processor in accordance with Visa/Mastercard procedures based on the kinds of products and services they primarily sell. We group similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making rewards offers to you. Please note: We make every effort to include all relevant merchant codes in our rewards categories. However, even though a merchant or some of the items that it sells may appear to fit within a rewards category, the merchant may not have a merchant code in that category. When this occurs, purchases with that merchant won't qualify for rewards offers on purchases in that category. Purchases submitted by you, an authorized user, or the merchant through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, online or mobile digital wallets, or similar technology will not qualify in a rewards category if the technology is not set up to process the purchase in that rewards category. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see chase.com/RewardsCategoryFAQs Opens in a new window .
Third-Party Merchants: The listed merchant(s) are in no way affiliated with Chase, nor are the listed merchant(s) considered sponsors or co-sponsors of this program. All trademarks are the property of their respective owner(s).
$50 Annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit: A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for hotel accommodation purchases made through Chase Travel, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50. Annual means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. Annually, the first $50 in Chase Travel hotel purchases will not earn rewards points. Statement credit(s) will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles after your purchase posts to your account.
Book Through Chase Travel: When you use points to redeem for cash, each point is worth $.01 (one cent), which means that 100 points equals $1 in redemption value. Each point you redeem for travel booked through Chase Travel is worth $.0125 (one and a quarter cents), which means that 100 points equals $1.25 in redemption value, and points are worth 25% more than if redeemed for cash. For example, 60,000 points are worth $750 when redeemed for travel purchases, or $600 when redeemed for cash. The cost of travel is based on the rates and fares available through Chase Travel, including the online portal and call center, and may not reflect all rates and fares that are available through other sales channels. If you choose to use points and your Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card to pay for your purchase, each point will be worth $.0125, but your credit card will be charged the full remaining dollar amount.
Cardmembers Eligible for Chase Pay Over Time: Eligible cardmembers are those with access to Chase Pay Over Time who use a participating Chase credit card for eligible purchases. Access to Chase Pay Over Time is not guaranteed, is based on a variety of factors such as creditworthiness, credit limit and account behavior, and may change from time to time. How does travel insurance work on a credit card.
Credit card travel insurance protects you from some unforeseen circumstances that may disrupt your travel plans. If your credit card includes travel insurance, you may be reimbursed if your travel is affected by weather, health issues or certain kinds of emergencies outside your control.
Typically, credit card travel insurance only covers the expenses that you charge to that specific card. And because different cards have different travel insurance policies, it's important to read the fine print in your card's terms and conditions to understand your coverage levels.
What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance provides protection for expenses associated with travel, both domestic and international. Travel insurance may reimburse you if your trip gets cancelled, delayed or interrupted--or if you have to pay medical costs that your primary health insurance can't cover.
Travel insurance benefits can be broken down into a few different categories:
- Trip cancellation insurance may reimburse you if your pre-booked, non-refundable flight (that was booked with the same credit card) is cancelled under unforeseen circumstances, such as injury or if your flight is cancelled due to weather conditions or other.
- Your credit card's trip cancellation insurance may reimburse you for prepaid flights and hotel stays booked with your credit card.
- Trip interruption insurance (for trips that end earlier than planned) may cover expenses like the cost of a last-minute flight home. In most cases, only the part of your trip that was interrupted will be eligible for reimbursement.
- Travel delay insurance may reimburse expenses, such as a hotel stay, that arise from severe delays.
- Medical insurance works like a supplement to your existing health insurance, which may not cover medical costs that you incur abroad. Evacuation insurance covers the costs associated with an evacuation following a weather event or other disruption.
- Baggage insurance is supplemental to coverage provided by your airline or via your homeowners or renters insurance policy. Baggage coverage may reimburse you for the actual or replacement cost of your possessions, should they go missing as you travel.
What are the benefits of credit card travel insurance?
Many airlines and tour operators offer travel insurance as an add-on at point of purchase. Credit card travel insurance, on the other hand, is a feature offered on certain credit cards.
Credit card travel insurance provides the following benefits:
- Financial protection : Comprehensive credit card travel insurance can provide full coverage should a covered event--such as severe weather, a medical emergency affecting you or a loved one, or loss of employment--occur. In many cases, travel insurance may require you to pay any expenses out of pocket, then file a claim later for reimbursement.
- Evacuation assistance : If your credit card travel insurance includes evacuation coverage, you can get help securing transport when a covered event (like weather or a political incident) disrupts your travels. Depending on the coverage provided by your credit card travel insurance plan, even emergency medical evacuations such as those on a private jet-may be covered.
- Supplemental medical coverage : Many health insurance plans don't cover medical costs incurred outside the country. Even those that do are likely to charge a deductible. Credit card travel insurance that includes medical coverage may pay for some medical costs, including your primary plan's deductible.
- Peace of mind : Having credit card travel insurance can give you the confidence to make bold travel plans--or jet somewhere sunny in the dead of winter. A major storm might snarl your vacation plans, but with travel insurance you may get fully reimbursed.
What questions should I ask about credit card travel insurance?
Credit card travel insurance provides many benefits, but be sure to understand what coverage your card provides before you book a trip. Do your research and ask questions to maximize the value of your credit card's travel insurance program:
- What coverage levels does my card offer? Get a copy of your card's full terms and conditions to learn exactly what kinds of travel coverage are included.
- Are my family members covered by my credit card travel insurance? Travel insurance typically covers events that affect your immediate family: for example, if your child gets sick before you embark on a flight. Your more distant relatives--and pets--may not be covered, however.
- What specific events are covered? Understanding the events that can trigger a claim is crucial to getting the most out of travel insurance. For instance, involuntary unemployment may qualify you for cancellation protection--but leaving your job voluntarily may not.
Relying on credit card travel insurance
Credit card travel insurance can offer financial protection and peace of mind when you travel. Take the time to understand how your card's travel insurance works-and be aware that only expenses charged to your card are likely to be covered.

Every account anniversary year, cardholders receive up to $50 of hotel credits when booking reservations through Chase Travel. These credits cover a portion of your hotel stay and can offset over half of the card’s annual fee.
Travel reservations made through Chase Travel usually earn 5 points per dollar, which is another great reason to book through the Chase travel portal. However, you will not earn points on the spending that qualifies for the $50 annual hotel credit.
2. Points are worth 25% more when booking travel

Transferring points tends to offer the highest value redemptions as you can often find outsize value when using your rewards to book peak travel dates, high-end hotels and premium cabin flights vs. what you’d pay in cash.

4. Get a 10% bonus every year
Unlike the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s welcome bonus , which is a one-time windfall, on your account anniversary, you’ll receive unlimited bonus points worth 10% of your total purchases made during the previous year. For example, that means if you spend $50,000 over the 12 months of your account anniversary year, you’ll get 5,000 bonus points.
5. Repay eligible purchases up to 24 months without interest
The Chase Sapphire Preferred doesn’t offer a 0% intro APR period on purchases or balance transfers. However, you can use the My Chase Plan® to break up purchases of $100 or more into fixed monthly payments for up to 24 months without interest. Instead of interest charges, you’ll pay a fixed monthly fee to use this benefit.
6. Complimentary travel protections
Chase includes complimentary travel protections in case you encounter problems during your trip. When booking reservations with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you’re covered against trip cancellation, interruption and delays. Coverage includes up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses if your trip is canceled or interrupted.
When your trip is delayed more than 12 hours or requires an overnight stay, you can receive up to $500 per ticket for meals, lodging and other eligible expenses. Baggage delay benefits provide up to $100 per day per person for five days to cover the essentials if your baggage is delayed more than six hours.
Rental cars are protected against damage or theft when you decline rental car collision insurance and charge the entire reservation to your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. This coverage is primary, which is rare in a card at this affordable price point.
7. Benefits that protect your purchases
Your eligible purchases are protected against damage or theft for the first 120 days. Purchase protection claims are good for up to $500 per item and $50,000 per account.
Chase also includes extended warranty protection on eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of three years or less. This benefit provides an extra year of coverage on eligible items.
8. Partner benefits earn bonus points and save money
Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits include bonus points and savings with exclusive partnerships with popular brands. Lyft rides earn 5 points per dollar through March 2025. DoorDash provides a one-year, complimentary DashPass membership offering $0 delivery fees and lower service fees.
9. No foreign transaction fees
Bring your Chase Sapphire Preferred when traveling internationally because it waives foreign transaction fees. This benefit avoids a hidden fee of up to 3% on international purchases that many other credit cards charge. For example, $5,000 in purchases in another country could incur up to $150 in foreign transaction fees if you used a credit card that charges such a fee.
10. Spend instantly upon approval
When you apply for a new credit card, you typically have to wait up to 10 days to receive your physical card before you can start spending. If you’re approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred , new cardholders can start spending right away by adding the card to their digital wallets. This enables them to get a head start on meeting the requirements to earn the card’s welcome bonus .
11. Refer friends and earn bonus points
In addition to earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points on your purchases, you can also earn points by referring your friends and family to the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. You’ll receive 15,000 points for each friend who is approved for the card. Chase allows cardholders to earn up to 75,000 bonus points each year with successful referrals, which is worth over $900 in travel booked through the Chase Travel portal.
Should travelers get the Chase Sapphire Preferred card?
With so many benefits, it’s easy to see why the Chase Sapphire Preferred is such a valuable travel credit card. It earns 5 points per $1 on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3 points per $1 on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 2 points per $1 on all other travel purchases and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases, includes travel and purchase protections, and points can be redeemed in numerous ways. This card offers advantages whether you’re traveling internationally or making daily purchases in your local area. Plus, it includes limited-time partner offers that earn bonus points and provide savings on your purchases.

How does Chase Sapphire travel insurance work?
What does chase sapphire travel insurance cover, what if the chase sapphire travel insurance benefits are insufficient for my trip, how do i file a chase sapphire travel insurance claim, the bottom line, chase sapphire travel insurance faqs, guide to chase sapphire travel insurance benefits 2024.
- The Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve ® offer complimentary travel insurance protections to help give you peace of mind while away from home.
- Cardholders can access trip cancellation and interruption coverage, lost luggage reimbursement, rental car insurance, and more.
- There are various limitations to the coverage these cards can provide, so a standalone travel insurance plan may be more suitable if you prefer comprehensive coverage.
Chase Sapphire travel insurance is offered to Chase Sapphire Preferred ® and Chase Sapphire Reserve ® cardholders on a complimentary basis. These trip insurance protections can offer coverage for unfortunate instances like if your trip is delayed, you accidentally crash your rental car, an airline loses your luggage, or you get seriously injured during your travels.
To get travel protection from your Chase Sapphire credit card, you must pay for part of your trip with either your Chase credit card or with Chase Ultimate Rewards ® points that you earned from the card. Just having the card in your wallet isn’t enough to be eligible for this coverage.
▶︎ See our detailed comparison: Chase Sapphire Reserve vs Sapphire Preferred
Various Chase credit cards offer a handful of travel insurance perks, but the best protection comes from the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® and the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. These cards offer high-limit coverage for trip cancellation/interruption, trip delays, baggage delays, car rentals, and more.
Here’s how their coverage stacks up:
Comparison of coverage
We’ll explain these benefits more as you keep reading.
Trip cancellation and interruption protection
Trip cancellation coverage comes into play when your trip must be canceled for reasons beyond your control, such as being called to jury duty or your hotel or resort becoming uninhabitable due to a natural disaster before you arrive. This coverage can help you get reimbursed for pre-paid travel expenses you booked ahead of time, such as airfare, your hotel stay, and tours you already paid for.
Trip interruption coverage kicks in when your trip must be cut short due to a covered reason, such as a travel warning due to terrorism being issued in your destination or a terrorist incident happening within 25 miles of one of the destinations or airports on your itinerary.
Note that you’ll get reimbursed for pre-paid travel expenses you covered ahead of time whether you paid for your trip with your credit card or Chase Ultimate Rewards ® points. In fact, Chase says in its fine print that rewards points redeemed for travel “will be reimbursed in an amount equal to their monetary value.”
Both the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® and the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® come with trip cancellation and interruption benefits worth up to $10,000 per covered person and up to $20,000 per eligible trip.
Trip delay protections
The Chase Sapphire Preferred ® and the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® also come with trip delay reimbursement worth up to $500 per ticket. This kind of coverage can be useful when your trip is delayed by a common carrier for a specific length of time, and you’re forced to pay for lodging or additional means.
That said, Sapphire Reserve coverage kicks in sooner than travel delay insurance from the Sapphire Preferred (as seen below).
- Chase Sapphire Preferred: Receive up to $500 in coverage for trip delay reimbursement when trips are delayed for at least 12 hours.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve ® : Receive up to $500 in coverage for trip delay reimbursement when trips are delayed for at least 6 hours.
Baggage delay reimbursement
Baggage delay reimbursement can help pay for travel-related incidental expenses that occur when your bags don’t show up at your destination when you do.
For example, this coverage can pay for:
- Clothing you have to buy
- Electronics chargers you require
- Essential hygiene items
Both Chase Sapphire cards offer up to $100 per day in baggage delay reimbursement for a maximum of five days. Baggage must also be delayed for at least six hours on a covered trip before coverage applies.
Lost luggage reimbursement
If your luggage is lost or significantly damaged by the common carrier, you can recoup some of those losses with your Chase Sapphire card. Both cards have a coverage maximum of $3,000 per covered person per trip. Within that, there’s a limit of $500 for jewelry and watches and another $500 limit for electronics, including cameras.
The amount of coverage you qualify for is determined by the actual cash value of your lost belongings.
Primary rental car insurance
Both Chase Sapphire cards also offer primary car insurance coverage that lets you skip paying for protection at the rental car counter and use this coverage instead. However, not all cars qualify, and not all destinations let you use this insurance. Chase says you’ll want to contact your program administrator to see if the type of car you plan to rent qualifies.
Also note that rental periods of up to 31 days can be covered, whereas car rental periods lasting longer than 31 days are not.
Coverage typically excludes antique cars (cars over 20 years old or that have not been manufactured for ten 10 years or more), cargo vans, vehicles with open cargo beds, motorcycles, mopeds and motorbikes, limousines, recreational vehicles for off-road exploration, and passenger vans with seating for more than nine people (including the driver).
Coverage from each card varies in this category as well:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred: Auto rental coverage applies to collision damage or theft and is worth up to the actual cash value of most cars.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve ® : Auto rental coverage applies to collision damage or theft and is worth up to $75,000.
Emergency medical and dental benefits
When it comes to emergency medical and dental benefits, only the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® offers this coverage and it’s still very limited.
This medical insurance also applies to very specific situations, including the following:
- Coverage for the services of a legally qualified physician, surgeon, graduate nurse, dentist, or osteopath
- Charges for hospital confinement and use of operating rooms
- Charges for anesthetics (including administration), x-ray examinations or treatments, and laboratory tests
- Ambulance services
- Drugs, medicines, and therapeutic services and supplies
Chase medical coverage is only worth up to $2,500 for emergency medical expenses, subject to a $50 deductible. However, Chase says you can be eligible for up to $75 per day (maximum of five days) in coverage for hotel charges if your physician determines you should recover in a hotel immediately after treatment.
Note that this benefit applies to cardholders who pay for all or part of their round-trip travel expenses with their card or Chase Ultimate Rewards ® points. Immediate family members can also qualify for coverage if they are a spouse or domestic partner or a legally dependent child under the age of 19 (or under the age of 26 if they’re enrolled in a college or university).
Emergency evacuation and transportation
The Chase Sapphire Reserve ® is also the only Chase credit card that comes with emergency evacuation and transportation coverage .
This protection is worth up to $100,000, and it pays for eligible transportation expenses, medical services, and medical supplies that are necessary during evacuation.
Note that emergency evacuation is only covered when it is recommended by an attending physician, required by standard regulations of the company transporting you, and approved in advance by the benefit administrator. If you are hospitalized for more than eight days, this coverage can also pay to have a friend or relative transported to your bedside in some cases.
Travel accident insurance
Both Chase Sapphire cards also offer travel accident insurance that pays a beneficiary for loss of life. Coverage can also apply to accidental dismemberment or to loss of hearing, sight, or speech.
As seen below, coverage varies between the two cards.
- Chase Sapphire Preferred: Qualify for up to $500,000 in coverage when traveling on a common carrier and up to $100,000 for 24-hour coverage.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve: Qualify for up to $1 million in coverage when traveling on a common carrier and up to $100,000 for 24-hour coverage.
Also note that certain accidental dismemberments and some losses of hearing, sight, or speech qualify for lower amounts of coverage depending on the loss in question. For example, the loss of a thumb and index finger of the same hand only qualifies for 25% of the maximum benefit amount, whereas the loss of one hand, loss of one foot, loss of sight in one eye, loss of speech and loss of hearing only qualify for 50% of the maximum benefit amount.
While Chase travel insurance benefits work well in a broad range of scenarios, there are situations where a standalone policy can leave you better off.
For example, having just $2,500 in emergency medical and dental coverage from the Sapphire Reserve is going to be insufficient for anyone traveling to a country where their health insurance doesn’t apply. Additionally, trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits may not be enough for expensive trips that cost more than limits can reimburse for.
If you feel like credit card travel insurance could leave you vulnerable to losses, you can purchase affordable travel insurance from a broad range of issuers. Doing so can ensure you have the medical coverage you need when you need it, and that you’ll get protection for all your nonrefundable travel expenses after sign-up. If you have a pre-existing condition, you’ll also want to make sure your plan offers a pre-existing conditions waiver and that you meet the conditions to qualify. Additionally, contemplating travel insurance tailored to the specifics of your trip, such as cruise insurance , is a prudent consideration.
The exact steps you’ll take to file a credit card travel insurance claim with Chase vary based on whether you have the Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, or another Chase credit card.
You may also need to take different steps based on the type of coverage you are filing a claim for.
Either way, here’s a rundown of the basic steps you’ll need to take to file a Chase travel coverage claim.
- Start a new claim with Chase’s claims center. Go to eclaimsline.com and select “new claim.”
- Select claim type. After that, you’ll select the type of claim you want to file from a dropdown menu, whether you’re filing for trip cancellation coverage, baggage delay insurance, or something else.
- Enter the requested information. Chase will ask you to supply a range of personal details and information for the claim.
- Submit the requested documentation. After that, you’ll need to upload the information requested to substantiate your claim. This can include medical bills and forms, car rental information, and other official documentation that supports your claim.
- Wait to hear back. Once you supply all the information the benefit administrator requests, you’ll typically hear back on your claim within five business days. You may also need to submit more information or documentation at this time.
Chase Sapphire Preferred travel insurance and Chase Sapphire Reserve travel insurance can come in handy if you end up needing coverage while you’re out exploring the world.
Although the benefits they provide may not be as comprehensive as some standalone travel insurance plans, they’re included with your Chase Sapphire card membership (so it won’t cost you anything extra) and can help to give you added peace of mind when traveling.
The protections provided by Chase Sapphire travel insurance are just some of the perks that come with the Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve cards.
Is Chase Sapphire travel insurance worth it?
Credit card travel insurance can be worth it, but you’ll want to read over your specific policy details to see which coverage applies. You may also want to compare Chase travel insurance with a standalone policy side-by-side before relying on coverage from a credit card.
Do Chase Sapphire cards provide trip cancellation and interruption insurance?
Many Chase credit cards products offer trip cancellation and interruption insurance, including the Chase Freedom Unlimited ® , Chase Freedom Flex, Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card , Chase Sapphire Preferred ® and Chase Sapphire Reserve®. However, limits on this coverage vary by card.
How do I activate Chase Sapphire travel insurance?
To activate Chase travel insurance, you’ll apply for a new credit card that offers it. From there, coverage is complimentary after account opening when you use your card or Chase Ultimate Rewards ® points (or a combination of the two) to pay for travel with a common carrier.
Does Chase travel insurance cover family members?
Some Chase travel insurance coverages can apply to a family member traveling with the primary card member. Make sure to read over your specific card benefit details so you know for sure.
What happens to my Chase Ultimate Rewards when I cancel a trip?
If you cancel a trip that was paid for with Chase Ultimate Rewards ® points, you may get your points back depending on the reason for the cancellation and the policies of your airline, hotel or other travel vendor. With Chase trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance specifically, Chase says you may be reimbursed for the cash value of your Ultimate Rewards points instead.

Why the Chase Sapphire Preferred is Best for All-Purpose Travel in 2024
Many or all of the products on this page are from partners who compensate us when you click to or take an action on their website, but this does not influence our evaluations or ratings. Our opinions are our own.
I’m a Texan, but I live in Colorado. Besides any planned vacations I take, I travel to the Lone Star State a few times a year to visit family and friends, which adds up to a lot of flying. I use multiple credit cards to help me cover the cost of these trips, but the stalwart Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is easily the most important card in my wallet.
Compared with other cards in its class, this $95 -annual-fee card might not seem that flashy. It won’t help you skip the line at airport security or sip a cocktail in a lounge before your flight. But even though it won’t do much to make you feel fancy at the airport, its suite of perks can help you save significant money on trips and help you cover any mishaps you might encounter along the way.
Here’s why I cast my vote for the card as NerdWallet’s 2024 best credit card for all-purpose travel .
» SEE: Why this now-classic card still has staying power
Travel protections can be extremely valuable
First things first: if you’re a traveler, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card could be worth getting just for the travel protections alone. You’ll get:
Primary rental car insurance.
Trip cancellation/interruption insurance.
Trip delay coverage.
Baggage delay coverage.
The card’s cancellation and delay coverage can come in handy if your flight is significantly delayed or the airline loses your luggage.
But the real star for me is primary rental car insurance. After a single wreck in a rental car caused my car insurance to spike for several years, I’m a big believer in having separate rental car coverage apart from my personal car insurance. But the cost of the protections rental car companies offer can add up quickly.
Meanwhile, the insurance you’ll get with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is free and automatically covers your rental car, assuming you use the card to pay for the full amount and decline the rental company’s insurance. Say you rent a car with an insurance fee of $35 a day. It would take just three days to completely cover the cost of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ’s annual fee.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, making it a good companion for international travel.
Solid rewards rates help me rack up points
Because I live a plane ride away from family, I like to keep a healthy stash of credit card rewards on hand. And the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card gives me multiple ways to top up my reward balance. It earns:
5 points per $1 spent on travel booked through Chase.
3 points per $1 spent on dining, select streaming services and online grocery purchases.
2 points per $1 spent on all other travel.
1 point per $1 spent on other purchases.
Shop Through Chase
Besides these regular rewards, cardholders also have access to Shop Through Chase, a shopping portal that offers elevated rewards on certain online merchants. These points are stacked with rewards you’d already earn. For example, as of January 2024, Safeway.com earns 2 points per dollar through Shop Through Chase. Since online grocery purchases already earn 3 points per dollar, you’d earn a total of 5 points per dollar.
» MORE: Chase Ultimate Rewards®: How the program works
Cardholders also receive a 10% point bonus each cardholder anniversary. So if you spent $10,000 per year, you’d earn an additional 1,000 points.
Combine rewards with other Chase cards
If you prefer to keep only one card in your wallet, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a great one-and-done option. But you can also combine your rewards with those from other cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards®.
I pair my Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card with the Chase Freedom Flex® , which earns 5% back on rotating categories (on up to $1,500 each quarter). I usually earn more rewards on my Flex than my Preferred, so this option allows me to maximize my earnings while still taking advantage of the Preferred’s superior redemption options.

How redeeming points helped me celebrate the World Series
Growing up, I spent my summers watching Texas Rangers games with my family. When we weren’t at the game, we watched it on TV or listened on the radio. Now that I'm living out of state, I usually listen to the radio broadcast alone in my Colorado apartment. But when the Rangers clinched a 2023 playoff spot, I knew if they made it to the World Series I needed to at least watch with my family if I couldn't make it to the games.
I already had a planned trip to Texas for a wedding the week after the World Series. But, call it baseball superstition or maybe heartbreak from loving a team that hadn’t ever won a championship, I couldn’t bring myself to move my flight up until I knew my team was headed to the Fall Classic.
But last-minute ticket prices are not so great for my wallet. Thankfully, I was able to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, not only to be in Texas during the World Series, but also to take a trip to Florida with my sister a few weeks earlier to watch our team play in the Wild Card round.
Transferring my points helped me get outsize value
My favorite way to redeem rewards is to transfer them to one of Chase’s travel partners , which includes multiple airline and hotel loyalty programs. Rewards transfer at a 1:1 ratio, and smart redemptions can often give you more value for your points.
You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards® to a number of U.S.-based airlines, including United, JetBlue and Southwest, plus a number of U.S.-based hotels. But I normally get the most value out of the issuers’ international airlines — even for domestic travel. My usual go-to's are British Airways and Air Canada , because you can often use rewards to book flights for fewer miles on alliance partners American Airlines and United Airlines, respectively.
Aer Lingus (1:1 ratio).
Air Canada (1:1 ratio).
Air France-KLM (1:1 ratio).
British Airways (1:1 ratio).
Emirates (1:1 ratio).
Iberia (1:1 ratio).
JetBlue (1:1 ratio).
Singapore (1:1 ratio).
Southwest (1:1 ratio).
United (1:1 ratio).
Virgin Atlantic (1:1 ratio).
Hyatt (1:1 ratio).
InterContinental Hotels Group (1:1 ratio).
Marriott (1:1 ratio).
It’s these transfers that helped my sister and me book multiple last-minute flights to watch the Rangers play. Between our trip to Florida and my additional flight to Texas, we took a total of five last-minute flights within a month. We were able to snag great redemption rates by transferring Chase points on three of them:
My sister’s flight from Tampa to Dallas: 9,000 British Airways Avios rewards.
My flight from Tampa to Denver: 12,500 Air Canada Aeroplan miles.
My flight from Denver to Dallas: 10,000 Air Canada Aeroplan miles.
For reference: Booking last-minute flights with miles on United would generally cost me around 15,000 miles one-way. (Note that each airline's program charges varying taxes and fees in addition to the required miles.)
Scoring great deals by transferring points isn't always a guarantee. My Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card couldn't, for instance, conjure up an affordable flight to Phoenix that would have let me watch my team win the World Series in person. But it did help me make it home in time to catch the Rangers' victory from the couch with my family and pizza, without blowing my budget.

Our Thoughts on Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Insurance
Chase offers travel insurance through the Sapphire Preferred credit card if you use the card to purchase trip expenses such as cruise bookings, airline tickets, hotel accommodations and more. The company’s travel insurance offering includes coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions and delays, accidents and more.
But while Chase has competitive luggage loss limits when compared with the top travel insurance providers, the Sapphire Preferred Preferred card doesn’t offer emergency medical and evacuation coverage like some other travel cards. And although Chase provides free travel insurance benefits with the Sapphire Preferred card, there is a $95 annual fee.
If you’re a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card holder, we encourage you to compare its coverage with plans offered by competitors. This can help ensure you have travel protection that fits your vacation and your unique needs as a traveler.
How To Qualify to Use Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Insurance
Qualifying for Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance is a relatively simple process based on our experience. If you do not have a credit card already, you will need to visit Chase’s website to fill out an application. You’ll need to provide personal information such as your name, date of birth, mother’s maiden name, home address, contact information, Social Security number, individual tax ID number, employment status and annual income. Chase states that if you have a high credit score, you can likely apply for any card of your choice — so prepare for the company to consider your credit score when applying for this card.
Available travel insurance when you book using your Chase Sapphire Preferred card includes protection for rental car damage, cruise line reservations and airfare, to name a few. Benefits also apply to the cardholder and their immediate family during their travels. Note that if you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you can also qualify for travel protection benefits. However, the benefits differ between the two cards, which we will address further in this article.
How Does Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Insurance Work?
Chase Sapphire Preferred travel insurance coverage offers several protections at no extra cost to cardholders who book trips using their credit card. Benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, baggage delay insurance and trip delay reimbursement. Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders also receive travel and emergency assistance services if they need legal and medical referrals.
Chase notes that unaffiliated insurance companies underwrite the travel benefits, and these companies are solely responsible for the administration and claims of cardholders. Those so-called benefit administrators may enforce specific time limits and documentation requirements that apply to the claims process. Chase should provide cardholders with this information when they first open their account.
Coverage Benefits of Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Insurance
Chase provides extensive travel insurance benefits through its Sapphire Preferred credit card, including protections you’d find with a traditional travel insurance policy . See the table below for a detailed breakdown of the Chase Sapphire Preferred travel insurance benefits and associated coverage limits.
* Information about benefits provided by the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card was collected by the MarketWatch Guides team and has not been provided or reviewed by the card issuer.
Trip Cancellation
If you must cancel your trip for a reason covered under your policy, trip cancellation insurance can reimburse prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses. This often covers expenses such as lost airline tickets, cruise bookings, prepaid tours and hotel reservations.
Chase Sapphire Preferred travel insurance covers trip cancellations due to traveler sickness, severe weather and other situations, with reimbursement up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, non-refundable expenses.
Trip Interruption
If you must cut your vacation short and return home, trip interruption insurance can provide a refund for unused, prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses. Much like trip cancellation insurance, coverage also applies to situations such as the injury, illness, or death of a family member or traveler.
Chase covers Chase Sapphire Preferred travelers up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, non-refundable expenses.
Trip Delay Insurance
Trip delay coverage applies to travel delays caused by planes, buses, trains and other types of transport to your destination. Benefits for a covered trip will vary depending on the travel insurance plan but can extend to hotel rooms, meals and other necessities incurred if you must wait to resume your trip. Delay coverage does not extend to missing a flight due to poor planning or time management on behalf of the traveler.
Chase will reimburse up to $500 per common carrier travel ticket purchased using your Chase Sapphire Preferred card if you experience a delay of more than 12 hours or require an overnight stay.
Baggage Delay or Loss
Baggage coverage can pay for your travel bags if they become lost, stolen, delayed or damaged during your trip. Coverage is usually capped at a certain amount per bag, with some travel insurance plans offering higher limits than others. If you intend on bringing expensive or valuable items in your baggage, you might consider a policy with a high maximum coverage amount for lost luggage reimbursement or delays.
Chase provides Sapphire Preferred cardholders $100 per day for up to five days if they experience baggage delays with a common carrier such as an airline. If your carry-on or checked bags get lost, stolen or damaged, you could receive a reimbursement of up to $3,000 per person to cover your personal effects.
Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
Car rental collision damage coverage is not a standard offering from travel insurance companies. This waiver provides Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders with reimbursement up to the actual cash value of a rental car, minus certain high-value and exotic car models.
To qualify for this waiver, you will need to decline the rental car insurance provided by the rental company and charge the entire cost of your rental to your Sapphire Preferred card. This waiver covers both theft and collision damage.
Travel Accident Insurance
Travel accident insurance through Chase provides accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage when you pay for your air, bus, train or cruise transportation using your card. Coverage includes up to $500,000 in accident protection.
Emergency Travel Medical Coverage
Travel medical coverage helps cover medical bills if you fall ill or get injured during your vacation. It does not cover routine medical services — only sudden illnesses or injuries considered emergencies or that require treatment by a healthcare provider. Some emergency medical benefits also include emergency dental coverage.
While many travel insurance providers offer this type of coverage, Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders do not have access to these protections with the card’s benefits. You can, however, find this coverage with the Sapphire Reserve card.
If you’re looking for comprehensive travel medical insurance, we recommend International Medical Group (IMG), as the company offers coverage up to $8,000,000. IMG plans average $217 per trip.
Emergency Evacuation and Transportation
Emergency evacuation and transportation insurance can provide peace of mind if you need transportation to a hospital or medical facility while traveling. For example, if you fall ill or become injured in a remote location and require transportation or evacuation to a medical facility equipped to care for your needs. Chase doesn’t provide this coverage for Sapphire Preferred cardholders and their immediate family members.
Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Insurance
The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is not the only credit card Chase offers with travel insurance benefits. Chase’s Sapphire Reserve card also provides benefits for cardholders who book their trips with their credit card. See the table below for a comprehensive breakdown of what each Chase credit card offers in travel insurance benefits.
* Information about benefits provided by the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit cards were collected by the MarketWatch Guides team and have not been provided or reviewed by the card issuer.
How To File a Claim with Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance
Generally, the first step to file a claim is to contact the appropriate number listed in your credit card’s benefits guide. If you have Chase Sapphire Preferred travel protection, call 1-888-320-9961 (within the U.S.) or 1-804-673-1691 (international). You can also file a claim online through eclaimsline.com if you prefer a fully digital experience.
Chase will likely ask you to prepare documentation that proves your losses to support your claim. These documents may include receipts for prepaid expenses, proof of lost, damaged or stolen items, or proof of travel delays from your airline or other transportation carriers.
Once you’ve submitted your claim, you then wait for approval and reimbursement, which may vary in time. Note that Chase enforces specific time limits in addition to documentation requirements for claims filing, so submitting your claim as soon as possible is recommended.
Should You Get a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card For Travel Insurance?
Signing up for a Chase Sapphire Preferred card strictly for its travel insurance benefits is a personal decision. However, getting a credit card for travel insurance is not your only option — you may also opt for a policy with a standard carrier such as Travelex . Chase’s coverage limits are not as high as limits from some other providers offering comprehensive travel insurance policies. Taking on an additional expense in the form of the Sapphire Preferred card’s $95 annual fee may also not be worth it if you don’t plan on using the card for anything other than infrequent travel.
If you’re looking for coverage for emergency medical expenses, evacuations and more, you may consider a plan from some of the other dedicated travel insurance companies. Chase does not specialize in travel insurance and lacks unique protections such as cancel for any reason (CFAR) and extreme sports coverage that other travel insurance companies may provide.
If you already have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and feel satisfied with its travel insurance coverage limits, you can take advantage of these benefits by booking your trip using the card. Regardless, we recommend considering your travel needs and budget before choosing travel insurance coverage.

Methodology: Our System for Rating Travel Insurance Companies
Our team researched and reviewed dozens of travel insurance providers and created a scoring system to judge each company based on coverage, quality and service. We also collected sample quotes from each company, both over the phone and on the Internet, to better understand the customer experience. Here are the factors we take into consideration when rating providers:
- A 30-year-old couple taking a $5,000 vacation to Mexico
- A family of four taking an $8,000 vacation to Mexico
- A 65-year-old couple taking a $7,000 vacation to the United Kingdom
- A 30-year-old couple taking a $7,000 trip to the United Kingdom
- A 19-year-old taking a $2,000 trip to France
- A 27-year-old couple taking a $1,200 trip to Greece
- A 51-year-old couple taking a $2,000 trip to Spain
- Plan availability (10%): We look for insurers offering a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades. Providers that offer six or more plans will earn top marks in this category.
- Coverage details (29%): We review the standard coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage will earn full points, with a focus on baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons such as accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.
- Coverage times and amounts (34%): We compare each company’s waiting periods and maximum reimbursement amounts for baggage, travel and weather delays. Companies that will reimburse customers after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
- Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Book an Airbnb in the top 10 wanderlust destinations with your Chase Sapphire Preferred

To inspire travel after over a year of staying at home, Airbnb has gathered the top wish-listed destinations by guests that they want to return to after the pandemic is over. According to their survey, 76% of Americans say that "just thinking about future travel has helped their mental health during the pandemic."
Airbnb users picked destinations ranging from Los Angeles to Bali. As countries are reopening to vaccinated travelers, now's the time to think about your first destination since the start of the pandemic.
Here at TPG, we often praise the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card as the best travel rewards credit card on the market. It even won a Reader's Choice TPG Award in 2020 as the Best Travel Rewards Credit Card.
There's never been a better time to apply with the chance to earn 100,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
That amounts to a whopping $2,000 in value, according to TPG valuations. Since each Chase Ultimate Rewards point is worth 5 cents each when redeemed for travel, this card can help you book your first post-pandemic trip — for (almost) free.
When it comes to Airbnb purchases, your Ultimate Rewards points will be worth 1 cent each -- more on that later. You'll typically get the most value from your points when transferring to Chase's 10 airline and three hotel loyalty partners, but for those who don't want to embark on complex transfer options, your 100,000 points are simply worth $1,000 if using for Airbnb.
With that in mind, let's take a look at the top 10 wanderlust destinations (as defined by Airbnb) and how you could use your Chase Sapphire Preferred to maximize and unlock (almost) free travel.

How to use your Chase Sapphire Preferred for Airbnb
What we like so much about the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the amount of flexibility and value you get when it comes to travel.
The Sapphire Preferred's earning rate is easy to remember: 3x on dining and 2x on travel. While dining is self-explanatory, Chase defines travel broadly as it encompasses everything from the obvious (flights and hotels) to the less obvious (Ubers and parking garages). This means you'll get a solid 4% return on these purchases — including Airbnbs — which quickly adds up over time.
Related: Best credit cards for Airbnb stays
Airbnb Experiences include group or private tours, classes, and other related activities — both in-person and virtual. These will also count as travel purchases, so you'll also earn 5 points per dollar or a 10% return.
While you can't book Airbnbs on Chase's travel portal, you could use your points to redeem for Airbnb gift cards if you've found a property you're eager to stay at. You can redeem your gift cards for 1 cent each, meaning that you could get $800 of Airbnb gift cards through the sign-up bonus alone.
Another option is to leverage your points to redeem at 1 cent each for a statement credit or just get pure cash, which can be used for Airbnb or virtually anything. Note that another lucrative option is Chase's Pay Yourself Back feature for a limited time at an elevated rate (until Sep. 30, 2021) of 1.25 cents and 1.5 cents, respectively, for dining, grocery stores, home improvement stores, select charities or fund a vaccine ride with Lyft with the Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve.
