So you’re backpacking through Croatia ? Okay then. To stop you from drying up Split and blocking the main roads, here are the top hikes in Croatia!

Hiking in Croatia can only be summed up by one word: Beautiful. Since Croatia has access to a long stretch of the Adriatic, it has an extraordinary ‘azure’ coastline. The Dinaric Alps loom in the north and are host to sunrises and sunsets so pretty they could make a geography student cry…

Croatia hosts a lot of blue, a lot of big, cool rocks, and some of the most Scandinavian-esque forests you can find in a warm(ish) country. On longer hikes, mountain huts and refuges can be found to take shelter within. Finding a place to stay close to your chosen hike is pretty straightforward too!

Because of the crowds it attracts, some of the hikes can get busy at times. As a general rule, I’d recommend hitting the trail as soon as the parks open, so you can avoid facing the hordes of tourists in peak season. And remember to stay safe out there too!

Okay, without further procrastination, I present to you the most legendary hiking trails in Croatia , meticulously designed to boost your holiday into action…

1. Plitvice Lakes National Park Loop (route K) – The Best Day Hike in Croatia

The Plitvice Lakes route K is a strong all-day trail. It’s a flat and relatively easy hike , with a few steep and slippery parts on the way. You do need to grab a boat between the lower and upper lakes, but this doesn’t detract from the sense of achievement on completion!

Depending on how much time you’ve got, and how hard you wanna go, you can also opt for one of the other Plitvice routes . Route A, for example, is only a few hours and can be done in the morning. The entire trail is contained with the Plitvice nature park.

• Duration: 18.3 km (11.4 miles), 6-8 hours
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Type : Loop

Croatia is known for its incredible national parks . Plitvice Lakes was the first designated national park in the country, back in 1949. It’s now a UNESCO-recognised treasure trove of natural beauty .

Situated halfway between Zadar and the capital city of Zagreb, this park is full of stunning waterfalls and woodlands, and is most noted for its 16 interconnected lakes. Wildlife thrives here — deer, bears, you name it.

Because of its popularity, the best way to see the park without the crowds is to hit the trail first thing in the morning — let’s say 7-8 a.m. There are a few hotels close to Entrance 2, and a campground seven kilometres away that you can use as a base.

2. Milna Coastal Walk from Hvar – Best Coastal Hiking Trail in Croatia

Hvar Island is a famous coastal getaway not too far from Split — a quick ferry ride will put you there in under two hours. The Adriatic beauty speaks for itself here with its rugged coasts, hidden beaches, and gleaming seas.

The Milna Coastal Walk starts at the harbour in Hvar Town, following a paved coastal walkway along Mustado Bay. The coastal section should take you around half an hour, and there’s an eatery where you can stop for refreshments. A beach as well, if you’re in for a quick dip.

• Duration: 7 km (4.4 miles), 2 hours
• Type : One way (can be turned into a return)

From here, the path becomes much more rugged, weaving partly into the woodland with the sea on your right. After around 20 minutes or so, you’ll find a bay and a great swimming opportunity before you reach Robinson — a hidden gem of a beach with a charming bar/restaurant. Milna won’t be far from here.

To get back to Hvar, walk back the same way you came if you have time. Otherwise, hop on a bus or boat that’ll take you home!

While you could make this a day trip from Split, there are plenty of great places to stay in Hvar , from self-catering apartments to party hostels. The blue cave is something you should check out too- one of the highlights near Hvar!

3. Velebit Hiking Trail – The Best Multi-Day Hiking trail in Croatia

If you’re looking for a good multi-day hike in Croatia, look no further than this. The Velebit Hiking Trail is bound to take you on an epic expedition into the fantasy landscape of Croatia’s largest (not tallest) mountain. Located in the midst of the Northern Velebit National park, this hike is an epic.

The entire trail is about 100 kilometres in length, which can easily be split up into nine days for a more achievable and rewarding hike. Mountain huts dot the route, and provide the perfect authentic feel to your hike!

• Duration: 100 km (62.2 miles), 9 days
• Difficulty: Difficult
• Type : One way

Carrying proper food supplies, clothing and equipment is especially important when you’re on a longer hike. And unlike other day hikes in Croatia, this multi-day trek is a serious task that needs careful preparation.

Most of these huts provide food, drinks, and shelter, but not all of them are open year-round and they have limited space. Be sure to contact them in advance to find out!

57 of the 100 kilometers in this route are made up of the entire Premuži? Trail. Built in the 1930s to connect North and South Velebit, it’s one of the most beautiful parts of the whole trek.

The best time to head out into the hills is during the summer when the weather is most stable.

4. Vidova Gora Trail – Must-Visit Hiking Trail in Croatia

Don’t let the start of this hike fool you. It may begin close to a holiday resort on Brac Island, but trust us; it is not easy. As usual, preparation is key.

The Vidova Gora Trail is well-marked and starts out along a gravelly road. But it won’t be long before you’re on a rocky mountain path, with wildflowers and local sheep for company.

You’ll climb around 900 meters in total, along a switchback trail that winds through scrublands dotted with olive trees. You’ll make your way until you reach a ridge where you’ll enjoy the Zlatni Rat Beach views and the sparkling bay below. Very Croatian of you!

• Duration: 10.5 km (6.6 miles), 3-4 hours
• Difficulty: Average
• Type : Return

The summit of Vidova Gora is spectacular. It’s the highest peak of all the Adriatic Islands and gives you a bit of every vista: the sea, the islands, and the mainland. There’s even a picnic table at the top for that well-deserved lunch you picked up in town earlier.

The hike starts in the village of Bol, so it’s smart to base yourself there. It has dozens and dozens of apartments to choose from and a whole lot of hotels, too.

5. Ogrlice and Roški Slap Loop – A Fun, Easy Hike in Croatia

If you’re wondering about the name of this hike, don’t worry; slap is the Croatian word for “waterfall” and you won’t actually get slapped while on this trail.

The Ogrlice and Roški Slap Loop is a relatively easy hike in Croatia that can be found in Krka National Park. This slice of wilderness is located in the lower reaches of the Krka River, close to the city of Sibenik.

It happens mostly along boardwalks, though there are some parts where you can move into muddy trails if you’re into that. It’s mostly shaded and the views are incredible all around.

• Duration: 3 km (1.9 miles), 1 hour or less
• Difficulty: Easy

Strolling around this loop feels more like being in a painting than anything else, really. The insanely beautiful waterfalls are the main attraction (well, duh), and there’s an abundance of wildlife to enjoy, including Europe’s second-highest density of lavender.

At the end of the loop, you’ll find a reward for your hiking efforts: natural plunge pools where you can take a swim. Best done when it’s hot, obviously, so don’t forget your swimming stuff if you’re coming in the summer.

All in all, it’s a great bet if you’re travelling with young children, or simply feel like going for a chilled stroll in nature.

6. Vosac Peak Hike – The Toughest Hiking Trail in Croatia

The beautiful Biokovo Nature Park is a very popular spot for hiking in Croatia. Situated on the Dalmatian Coast, there are numerous paths here, winding up into hills and mountains filled with olive groves and pine trees.

This park is named after the mountain range it sits on — the highest in Dalmatia and second-highest in Croatia. Its highest peak is Sveti Jure (1,762m), and all its craggy peaks make it seem like they’re hugging the sea.

This trek will have you tackling one of the many peaks of this mountain range, Vosac. It’s tough, but it’s also incredibly beautiful. And even if you consider yourself relatively fit, it might still present a challenge.

• Duration: 30 km (18.6 miles), 5-6 hours

Starting off in Makarska, the climb starts straight away. The trail, made up of loose stones, is winding and well-marked (signs boast a red circle with a white dot inside).

Eventually, you’ll start to get glimpses of the city below and the sea beyond. With mountains covering the other side, the ascent becomes steeper and rockier. It can get intense, especially when it’s hot, so be sure to pack enough water. 

Reaching the top, you can even see as far as Italy!

7. Mount Srd Trail – Best Hiking Trail near Dubrovnik

Situated within striking distance of Dubrovnik, the Mount Srd Trail takes you away from the walled city and up into the craggy mountain scenery.

There’s a fortress up here and a large white cross, adding to its scenic feel. And even though it’s only around 400 meters tall, it offers some incredible views of Dubrovnik Old Town and the scattering of islands just off the coast. 

People do attempt this in flip-flops, fresh off the beach, but we strongly advise you to not make that decision yourself. There’s a steep ascent involved and the trail itself is quite rocky, so proper shoes are a must.

• Duration: 5 km (3.1 miles), 1-1.5 hours
• Type : Return/ One way

The hike itself isn’t the most fun, or beautiful. It’s just a series of zig-zags up the mountain with little to no shade. But it’s not too long, and you’ll be rewarded with that Dubrovnik money shot in the end.

Another bonus is the fact that there’s a restaurant up here. Not bad for a refreshing post-hike beer, and you can always take the cable car down if you’re feeling lazy afterwards.

If you’re staying in Dubrovnik and you’re looking for some hikes, this one is a great place to start.

8. Medvednica Nature Park Loop – Off the Beaten Path Trek in Croatia

North of Zagreb, you’ll find the mystical wooded Medvednica Nature Park. Just a quick step away from the capital, this park hits differently than Croatia’s usual coastal offerings. And feels way more secluded as a result.

This is where you find the locals, not the tourists.

For a smooth start, we’re recommending a lollipop loop that takes in Trail 52 and Trail 48. With a few nice ascents here and there, you will be walking mostly on flat wooded tracks. By most standards, it’s on the easier side of the hikes in Croatia.

• Duration: 7 km (4.4 miles), 3 hours
• Type : loop

You do have more options in the park. With the number of different trails, it’s possible to add a few extra steps and head off in different directions with relative easiness. If you want to make it more difficult for yourself by adding in higher elevations or longer walks, you got it.

But remember to take water and warm clothes, and try to return before the sun goes down — these woods are bigger than you think.

This might be the perfect hike choice if you’re staying in Zagreb . You can even get maps of the park from the Croatian Mountaineering Association, or advice from Zagreb Tourist Information, both of which you’ll find there.

You’ve got quite a few options on your plate when it comes to staying in Croatia. Many people like to stay along the coast, where a lot of its major towns are situated. It’s pretty and it’s laid-back, so there’s no reason to complain.

Split is where all the action is. It’s a bit more central than Dubrovnik, and a great jumping point to the islands of Brac and Hvar. The city itself is also well-connected via roads, public transport, and rail.

Zadar is Croatia’s oldest continuously inhabited city. The epic Velebit Range and the Paklenica National Park are right at its doorstep, so staying here means easy access to hiking spots and a hub to travel further afield.

Then you’ve got Zagreb, the capital city. Transport connections are top-notch, there’s plenty of nature nearby and a wide variety of epic hostels you can choose from. It isn’t the most popular option, as it’s far from the Dalmatian Coast, but it feels like what it is: a real, authentic city.

If you’re going full chill mode, picking one of the islands will probably be a smarter move than the busier capital city of Zagreb.

They’re quite accessible from the mainland and are a great option for going on hikes too. Served as a bite-sized destination, it’s topped with a laid-back vibe and awesome coastal treks. You can hop from one to another as well!

Best Airbnb in Croatia – Ancora City Apartment  – Pula

Perfect place for a couple, a small family, or a group of three to four friends. Knocking back a glass or two of chilled Croatian vino on the roof terrace will kick your stay off, and things just don’t get worse from there. They just don’t. If you want my honest opinion, this Airbnb is worth the price.

Putting a packing list together for a Mediterranean vacay is usually all about shorts, t-shirts, and bathing suits. But if you want to sink your teeth into some awesome hiking trails in Croatia, you’re going to need more.

First off, the footwear. While the beach might ask for flip-flops, you’ll need some solid hiking shoes for the trail . Lightweight hiking trainers with a good grip will be fine for most hikes; more strenuous treks will require sturdier boots. 

The clothes you bring on a hike will vary with the seasons. In the summer, you want breathable clothes that protect you from the sun — a swimsuit will also come in handy to jump into that remote waterfall. In cooler months, it’s all about the layers. Pack a waterproof jacket too. 

If you’re planning a multi-day hike in Croatia, more in-depth preparations and packing will be needed. Most of the time, you’ll be carrying food supplies and a sleeping bag on your back. 

But even if you’re just going on a short stroll, having a few basic essentials such as a first aid kit , a blister pack, mosquito repellent, and water bottle in your bag will be extremely useful.

Aside from basking in the sunny beaches and exploring the old towns, Backpacking in Croatia equals a lot of nature too. Hiking is the perfect way to uncover the hidden beauties of this Mediterranean country.

You may be on a chilled vacation mindset, but that doesn’t mean you should head off on a hike unprepared. Plan your hike in advance, make sure you leave plenty of time to make your way back in daylight, and always let somebody know where you are going .

Trails are often uneven and have sheer drops, which means hiking in beach sandals or unsuitable clothing is not a good idea. Covering up is also advised – in some wooded areas, ticks can become an issue. 

Also, respect the sun. That shit’s strong. Croatia gets really hot in the summer, and many hiking paths are not shaded.

When it rains, rocky paths get muddy and slippery. In the winter, mountain grounds may get a covering of snow. Always check the weather!

Bring enough water for the hike, as well as sunscreen. Add a hat and sunglasses, and you’re good to go.

What are the best Croatian Hiking Tours?

Croatia has a wealth of hiking available, but some of the best tours revolve around the unbelievable Plitvice lakes . These are composed of an upper and lower set of lakes and are surrounded by some of the most amazing scenery. Take care though! The lakes can get super busy in peak tourist season, so try to avoid this if you can.

Is there any good hiking in Split, Croatia?

Yes! Since Split is surrounded by a jagged crop of tasty mountains (including the formidable Veliki Kabal) there are even some moderately difficult hikes on offer. I would recommend Vickov Stup as an achievable peak for keen explorers, and Marjan hill for something a little more relaxed. The Krk waterfalls aren’t far away either, and definitely worth the transport costs!

Can I go hut-to-hut hiking in Croatia?

Absolutely! Tackling either the Velebit trail or the Premuži? Trail will give you a bunch of huts to move between. There are lots of huts, especially in the national parks, and along mountain trails. Generally, if there is a path going up a mountain for more than 6 hours, there will be a hut somewhere along it. Don’t hold me to that, because you should still check first.

What are the best Croatian hiking vacations?

Since Croatia is so awesome (and stuffed with epic views), you don’t really have to plan your visit around hiking. Split, Dubrovnik, and a bunch of other super famous Croatian towns are all surrounded by incredible hikes pretty organically. It is definitely worth making a detour to the Northern Velebit national park, or the Dinaric Alps in the north if you want the serious serious stuff though!

So there you have it, some of the best hikes in Croatia! Whilst I didn’t go into extreme detail, hopefully there is enough here to stimulate some plans, the pulling out of some dusty hiking gear, and an emarkation on the trail…

Remember, always pack a water bottle, a fresh pair of socks, and more snacks than you think. It gets hungry out there, and your mate Terrance gets hangry as hell.

With around 2,600 hours of sunshine per year and countless wonderful hiking opportunities, Croatia is an ideal destination for active holidaymakers. The coast has a Mediterranean climate with mild winter temperatures that rarely fall below 10 degrees. Inland, continental weather conditions dominate, so temperatures are on average 4 degrees colder than on the coast. We at Eurohike offer our hiking tours from March or April to November, so you can experience the beauty of nature in all its different facets and seasons. Whether in the mild spring and autumn, or in the warm summer, every season offers something special for hiking holidaymakers in Croatia.

Croatia's cuisine

In Croatian cuisine, tradition meets diversity, because the dishes are strongly influenced by the regions. So you can find wonderful traditional dishes like the typical cevapcici or raznici, as well as – and thanks to its proximity to Italy – pasta and pizza, and above all else, seafood as far as the eye can see. Due to the almost unlimited access to the sea, Croatia offers an incredible variety of fish dishes. After an eventful day in nature, you can look forward to a good meal including freshly caught fish and seafood – which are served in various ways in traditional restaurants known as a Konoba. A good dinner is best finished with homemade ice cream, a good dessert such as rozata (caramel pudding) or a typical cherry liqueur. 

Culture and tradition in Croatia

Croatia is characterised by a particularly diverse cultural landscape and numerous traditions. Some of these customs count as UNESCO cultural heritage, such as the Ojkanje-song, a traditional song sung with trembling voices alone or with accompaniment. Klapa-singing is also an important and longstanding tradition in Croatia, the roots of which go back to the Middle Ages. But sweet traditions are also part of the intangible UNESCO world heritage, such as the handmade gingerbread. Not just a nice souvenir from northern Croatia, but rather a long-standing tradition from the Middle Ages, which, in the form of a heart, should bring happiness and joy to the recipient. Another tradition and part of the UNESCO list is the silent circle dance from the Dalmatian countryside.

Croatia Road Trip Itinerary: The Ultimate Guide

A road trip through Croatia topped my travel bucket list for quite some years. Until I finally had the chance to do it and it was me-mo-ra-ble. Here’s a complete guide for you to make your first Croatia road trip along the coast too!

When I was planning my trip, I found loads of websites talking about Croatia . Surprisingly none of them was complete and concise enough. Either they are too specific, too broad or simply not valuable pieces of information.

So just like I did with my island hopping guide for Thailand , and my Rio , Japan , Mexico , and Portugal itineraries, I’m helping you plan a 100% independent road trip in Croatia.

Is croatia worth it.

In a nutshell: HELL YES. Croatia is one of my favorite countries in Europe, period. I miss all the awesome landscapes we’ve come across along the Dalmatian Coast in particular the unique Zlatni Rat beach in Brac.

Is it easy to travel around Croatia?

Croatia is perfectly safe and has decent transportation options. The elongated form of the country makes the trip along the coast a bit more lenghty though.

Can you drive around Croatia?

Absolutely yes. Renting a car is the best way to enjoy Croatia. Roads are generally in very good condition, well signalized and there aren’t many cars on the road. Tours or agencies only take away the fun of exploring this beautiful country on your own.

Planning a trip to Croatia

When to do a road trip in croatia.

First of all, there reasons to visit Croatia all-year round. Some people go to Croatia in January just to see Plitvice Natural Park with snow – which judging by some pictures it’s a true delight!

That said, if you’re like me, you’ll most likely want to take advantage of the beautiful coastline and make sure you go when it’s warm and sunny.

With this in mind, definitely avoid the winter months, between November and March and the peak season, between July and August. Peak season can be terribly expensive and crowded everywhere you go, including an spike in traffic in the major cities.

Aim to book your trip between April to June or between September-October, which coincides with the shoulder season in Europe.

How long for a road trip in Croatia?

How many days do you have? *wink*

Although Croatia is not a huge country, it is big enough to keep you busy and happy for weeks. Or months. Make no mistake: there are loads of things to see and places to make your wanderlust go crazy. The longer you can stay, the less you’ll regret it later.

To make a first-time Croatia road trip itinerary you’ll need at least 10 days . If you have more time, great, just check the extra stops to the itinerary you can add below.

How to island-hop in Croatia?

Choosing which island(s) to go in Croatia is a FOMO-inducing first-world problem. With more than 1,000 islands to pick from, it can quickly become overwhelming.

If you’re indeed renting a car (or bike), I recommend starting by studying the ferry connections that allow vehicles. This can potentially save you a lot of money coming and returning from islands.

Other than that, it’s up to pick the island that resonates with you the most. Go to Brač for stunning landscape and beaches, Vis or Korcula for a getaway atmosphere, or Hvar if you’re looking to party.

My Croatia road trip itinerary

Here’s how my itinerary for my first-time in Croatia could looked like.

Hopefully this guide will save you hours of Google searches, trying to put your head around stops all to come up with the perfect journey.

• Plitvice : 1 day
• Zadar : 1-2 days
• Krka : 1 day
• Split : 1-2 days
• Brac : 2-3 days
• Dubrovnik : 2-3 days

Duration : for all the places mentioned above, stay at least 10 days. Activities : it includes a wide range of things to do: urban explorations, beach time, ancient ruins’ history, hiking natural parks and even swim in waterfalls. Where to stay : most of the places we’ve stayed were fully-furnished apartments. I’ve used Booking.com to book all our accommodation.

Chances are Zagreb will be the starting point for your road trip. Visiting the capital is a good way to get you introduced to Croatia, even though I later realised how different it is from the rest of the country.

The major highlight is definitely the emblematic Crkva sv. Marka ( St. Mark’s Church ), with its colourful tile pattern representing the coat of arms of both the city and of the country on the roof.

The entire old town is picturesque and walkable. Grab a beer at Tkalčićeva – a vivid street full of bars and small stores, great for people-watching.

Other important attractions are the Croatian National Theatre and the unique Museum of Broken Relationships , displaying personal objects of ex-lovers that somehow tell their (sad) story.

While Zagreb has some strikes of awesomeness going on, it falls a bit flat, specially if compared to nearby european capitals like Vienna or Budapest .

Still a great place to spend a full day and get your Croatian adventure started.

PLITVICE LAKES

Plitvička Jezera ( Plitvice Lakes ) is one of Croatia ’s most popular tourist destinations, made up of sixteen lakes inter-connected by a series of waterfalls and mountains.

This was the major FAIL of our road trip. Plitvice was one of the main reasons I wanted to go to Croatia in the first place so getting there under heavy rain, fog and cold winds was heart-breaking. There was no point to go inside, since we wouldn’t see a thing.

In any case, I highly recommend you to go to Plitvice . There must be a reason why everyone speaks about it with a little sparkle on the eyes. Good luck with the weather!

Plitvice National Park is open all year round, everyday from 7:00 to 19:00. The entrance to the park in peak season is 180 kuna .

It’s advisable to book a place nearby to stay and visit the Lakes early in the morning to beat the crowds that arrive from tours from Split and Zadar. For complete details on prices and operating hours go here .

Weather is unpredictable in this region of Croatia . The owner of the apartment we stayed advised there is sort of a micro-climate going on in Plitvice (we definitely experienced that!). Be extra careful with the possibly extreme foggy and rainy conditions when driving up to the mountains.

The ancient capital of Dalmatia , Zadar displays a compelling mix of ruins, fortress city walls and pedestrian-only marble streets which lead to a wide and modern waterfront.

The historical print of the city is particularly conveyed in the area where St. Donatus Church and the Cathedral of St. Anastasia sit in front of a huge lawn with scattered roman ruins.

While the old town displays an interesting combination of ancient and medieval heritage with a vibrant nightlife, the most unique feature of Zadar is in its waterfront.

The Morske orgulje ( Sea Organ ) is quite hard to notice at a first glance, but it does make sure it’s being heard . The marble steps leading toward the Adriatic display small tubes/whistles that create tunes driven my a combination of waves and wind. Listening to this sea concert is oddly satisfying…

A few steps further, you’ll find Sun Salutation : a giant blue circle embedded into the ground. This set of photovoltaic plates that collect solar energy during the day and put on a wonderful LED light show at night. A fabulous mix of high-tech and nature. I could watch it for hours.

For me, this was the first true wow moment in Croatia .

Where to stay in Zadar

Most hotels in Zadar are 3km out in the Puntamika area, but that’s too far away if you ask me.

Staying is the best option but can easily become expensive. If you really wish to stay here, I’d recommend you to book well in advance.

If you’re on a budget, look for the area near the bus/train station Željeznička stanica or in the other side of the bridge that connects the peninsula with the mainland. In both cases, you’ll be just a short walk away from all the action.

Guest House Pegla

Centrally located 3 minutes away from the Old Town, but far away form noice. Sea view included!

Murter island is probably the most off-the-beaten-track destination in this itinerary. Many driving along the coast of Dalmatia would probably add in Šibenik or Makarska instead.

However we were looking for relaxation and a more local vibe. The good thing about this island is that you don’t need a ferry to get there. Murter is connected to the mainland by a bascule bridge at Tisno which makes it technically sort of a peninsula.

Being the largest island in the Šibenik archipelago, it offers a wide range of beach possibilities within its numerous awe-inspiring coves and bay with shallow waters (perfect for kids!).

The bridge that connects the “mainland” to Murter is open each morning and at late afternoon.

From the 4 main settlements in the island, we chose Betina to stay. Easy-going and with a very local feeling and very close to Slanica Bay . It’s a small place but the whole setting of the beach, including the fine sand, and the surrounding olive and pine trees, felt like a hidden paradise.

Discover other sandy and pebbly beaches around like Podvršak , Korisina and Čigrađa and consider a day trip to Kornati islands. Many locals own a second property there and may be able to take you out there in a boat. The archipelago is a national park and is known for its preserved raw beauty and rich maritime ecosystem.

KRKA NATIONAL PARK

Krka National Park is a well-known nature spot in Croatia . Comprising more than 800+ species of fauna and flora across its 100 square kilometers of area, it’s a place of exceptional natural value.

I had great expectations that Krka would somehow make it up for the disappointment in Plitvice a few days earlier. And boy, everything went better than expected.

I got to say the lower part of the park has an unremarkable music summer festival feeling to it. But all is forgiven by the surrounding scenery once you start exploring the surroundings.

The highlight are the swimmable Skradinski Buk waterfalls. This set of 400-meter wide magnificent waterfalls that end up in stunning natural pools, reflecting the green of the surrounding lush vegetation. It’s definitely one of the most memorable experiences you can have in the Dalmatian Coast .

I also had time to explore further trails around the Skradinski Buk full of caves, lakes and other waterfalls which only proved how beautiful and special this place is. The whole park seems a distorted reality. It seems someone tuned up the contrast and saturation configurations: everything around overflows your eyes with color!

It’s worthwhile to spend a day here, hiking, biking or whatever you want to do in nature. Everything happens for a reason and I was glad I came to Krka instead.

Getting to Krka NP

You can enter the park in five different points. As most people visit from Šibenik (a 20-min ride), the two most popular starting points are Skradin and Lozovac at the southern end.

We ended up leaving the car in Skradin , taking a boat up the Krka river until the park. Boats sail every fill hour and return at half hours. The sailing time from Skradin to Krka is about 25 minutes and it is completely free with your entrance ticket. Woo-hoo, a bonus boat trip through the river valley!

Split is a major transportation hub in Croatia and a popular cruise ship port. It is also an ideal departure place to take a ferry and explore the islands along the Dalmatian coast.

When Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build himself a modest retirement home, he chose Split. Diocletian’s Palace was so massive that a bustling town started being build around it. Today, tons of shops, restaurants and cafés in Riva – the main pedestrian street – are the centre of the city action.

If there’s a major sight not to be missed in Split is definitely the Peristyle , the central square of the palace. Grab a seat in the nearest roman ruin, order a beer and marvel the spectacular architecture and the patchwork of Roman, medieval and Renascence buildings around you. It’s particularly beautiful during the evening.

Split is worth at least 1 or 2 days. Personally, I’d try to allocate more time to Zadar , but that’s my preference for a slightly less touristy city.

Where to stay in Split

I highly recommend you stay in the center of the old town. If possible inside the city walls. The outskirts of Split can be a bit disappointing and they’re surely not worth the extra trip.

Beware though: finding a parking spot in centre Split during the summer can be a needle-in-a-haystack task,

Villa Boban Luxury

Just a 4-min walk from the beach and 20-min from the Diocletian Palace, this is a great location. The apartments are clean, modern and tidy.

BRAC ISLAND

If you are road tripping Croatia, you’ll want to go to one (or more) of its 1,000 islands. Don’t let FOMO settle in!.

After checking the possible ferry routes and ruling out time-consuming connections, we ended up with three possibilities: Brac, Hvar and Korcula . In the end we’ve chosen the first one because it seemed to have the perfect mix of what we wanted to find: beaches, nature and relax.

I’ve praised the island of Brac before . It was a true show-stopper for me and quite possibly the major highlight of the trip. This is where the real and authentic Croatia lies.

Brac is one of those places with the power of take you away and make you forget all your problems.

The highlight: Zlatni Rat beach . One of the most popular postcards of the country. Due to its unique natural conditions, it’s a mecca for all the watersports enthusiasts but also a true delight to all nature lovers.

Allow yourself at least 2-3 days in Brac and don’t be limited to Zlatni Rat . The island has many other stunning coves and bays waiting to be explored, such as Lovrecina and Sumartin . The quaint small villages of Supetar , Pučišća and Bol are worth to visit too.

You’ve probably heard of Dubrovnik . The city has grown hugely in popularity in recent years and much credit should be given to the TV series Game of Thrones . In fact, you can see a GoT tour in every corner of the old town.

The amount of people inside the walls of Dubrovnik during the day is impressive, especially when cruise boats arrive. Stradun , the main commercial artery, can be completely packed at that times.

In any other destination, it would totally take away the charisma and authenticity – take Venice for example. But somehow in Dubrovnik that does not happen. Even with all the crowds and tours, wandering around the narrow cobbled streets of the old town felt as special as ever.

Walking the two-kilometre ancient walls allows for the best views of Dubrovnik , but I found it more interesting seeing it from the sea. Sea kayaking tours are widely available – I recommend Adventure Dubrovnik – and usually are done starting from Pile Gate and around the Lokrum island, right in front of the city.

One great place to stay – far away from the old town madness but easily reachable by bus/car – is the Lapad peninsula. While it’s an area with high-end luxurious hotels, it’s also possible to find cheap accommodation next to the best beaches near Dubrovnik .

Bring your passport

Did you know Dubrovnik is geographically isolated from the rest of Croatia ? If you are coming from anywhere else in Croatia to Dubrovnik by road, you’ll have to pass through Bosnia & Herzegovina . Bosnia is not part of the European Union, so depending on the country of your passport you may need to show your documents.

Getting around Dubrovnik

Traffic and parking in Dubrovnik is a total CHAOS. I highly recommend you get around using the reliable and efficient network of bus . We didn’t wait more than 5 minutes every time we used it, even during the night.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

I stayed in the Lapad peninsula which turned out to be a great area in Dubrovnik . Just a short bus trip to the crazy Old Town, it allows you to be away from the tourist madness and have a little bit of beach time close by. My hotel was the one below, but here’s a shortlist of the top places with WiFi in Lapad to get your search started.

Extra places to go in Croatia

If you have some more spare days, there are many other options to enrich your itinerary with places not only in Croatia but in other neighbour countries.

Istria peninsula, Croatia

I’ve left the entire western-most region of Croatia out of my basic itinerary due to time limitations. If time is not a problem, you can spend some days exploring the peninsula of Istria. Amongst the green countryside and the coastal little ports, the main city Pula and the fortified town of Rovinj stand out. Nearby there also some of Croatia’s popular islands: Krk , Rab and Cres .

Hvar Island, Croatia

Hvar is the most popular island destination in Croatia . From its endless lavender fields to the bubbling nightlife of Hvar Town , there’s always something to keep you busy. If Hvar still bores you, you can always rent a boat and head to the deserted Paklinski islands on a day trip.

Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

A day trip to Mostar is perfectly doable from either Split , Makarska or Dubrovnik . The city holds a complete different vibe from the whole Croatia, which makes it a great addition to your road trip route. Besides the stunning Stari Most ( Old Bridge ), Mostar is an interesting mix of a vibrant oriental culture and a joyless recent history.

Kotor, Montenegro

Backed up by impressive mountains keeping its authenticity untouched, many consider Dubrovnik to be a Euro-trashy version of Kotor . With scenic views, four-kilometre medieval walls and a ever-lasting medieval architecture, you might want to consider adding this city to your route. Next time, I will.

Driving in Croatia

I must say I was impressed with how easy it is to drive in Croatia . No matter the natural obstacles you’ll be driving on – mountains, cliffs, coves – the roads are in perfect condition and very well signalised. Pay tolls, when existent, are very cheap.

Within the cities, the story is a bit different. While Zagreb is still much calmer to what you’d expect of an european capital, traffic in cities like Zadar , Split , and specially Dubrovnik can be CHAOS.

Same for parking: we wandered around 45 minutes to find a (paid!) parking spot in Split . And we decided to ditch our car when arriving Dubrovnik (our last stop) and switch immediately to public transport. Remember this was in September, can’t even imagine on the peak summer months.

Which car hire companies to use in Croatia?

You can find most of the big heavy weights in Croatia. More importantly than the company you go for, is try to book your car as soon as possible – it can save you loads of money. We ended up going with Sixt and getting an additional insurance from Insurance4carhire . Good value for money in both cases, so I can just recommend them!

Pro tip: due to the geography of Croatia , consider returning the car in a different place than the pick up. Most companies will charge you a “one-way” fee, but it will be worth to avoid driving all the way back to your starting point.

Accommodation in Croatia

There’s a wide range of hotels, hostels, guesthouses, villas, and especially private apartments available on Booking and on Airbnb .

Rooms are usually cheap and with good quality rooms. Yet, due to the increase of tourism in recent years, it is recommended to book well in advance for July and August months.

So how much all of this madness cost?

Find out a breakdown on my numbers below. Keep in mind these are values per person and that I travelled with four other people, which tends to lower down the global costs. If you’re travelling with less people, I’d add 10-30% extra to the total for a better estimate. And don’t forget to add in your flights!

Tips for your road trip in Croatia

Here are some generic tips to save you time and money in Croatia:

Saving money

• Try to stay in apartments with kitchen, where you can prepare some meals. We actually did stay but we were too lazy to make any meals, which could have saved us loads!
• Pay attention to exchange rates, in some of the most touristy places they are outrageous. You can lose a lot of money changing money to kunas !

Saving time

• If you’re boarding a ferry with your car, arrive to the port EARLY. Lines can start forming 1 or 2 hours before the departure time and car availability is limited.
• Only a VERY limited number of ferries allow cars on board and they’re usually popular routes. Study well your itinerary as you can easily you make you waste a lot of time getting back to the mainland.

I am going to assume that “tips” like “ visit the old city of Dubrovnik ,” “ see Plitvice Lakes National Park ,” or “ check out Croatia’s islands ” are apparent and don’t need to be repeated.

If you’re planning a trip to Croatia, Dubrovnik  is likely the first place you’ve heard about. Instead, here are some suggestions that are guaranteed to make your journey that much smoother, take you a bit off the beaten path, and even save you a little money no matter the time of year you go.

1. We Now Use The Euro

Since January 2023, Croatia has adopted the euro as its official currency. This means you won’t need to exchange currency if you’re coming from a Eurozone country. It simplifies your financial transactions during your stay.

2. Check If You Need A Visa

Visa rules vary according to nationality, so always make sure that you check your particular needs before traveling. Croatia is now in the Schengen zone, so if you travel to other countries in the group, they’re going to add up within your allowance.

3. Book Ahead Of Time

A lot of Croatia’s most popular spots tend to become very full during the summer months, particularly Dubrovnik. If you want to avoid disappointment and get the best rates, make sure you book accommodation well ahead of time.

You can head online and find plenty of options, no matter where you want to go.

4. Skip The High Season And Travel In The Shoulder Season

If possible, avoid the prime tourist season months of July and August. Temperatures are high, tourist crowds are insane, and hotel prices are at their peak. You’ll also pay more for ferries, national park entry fees, and other attractions. Do you need any more reasons to avoid the prime months of the year?

We visited Croatia for three weeks in September, starting north of the country and working south. The weather was still warm and comfortable, the sea temps were still suitable for swimming, it was easy to find excellent accommodation , and the worst of the tourist hordes were gone. Now, don’t get us wrong, places like Dubrovnik and Split were still crowded…but imagine how much worse it could have been!

However, one quick heads-up: If you’re traveling to the islands by ferry, the number of scheduled boats reduces dramatically outside of June through to September. Keep that in mind if traveling outside those peak times.

5. Croatia Is Safe

Croatia is a destination where you can explore with peace of mind.

Croatia is widely considered safe for you, with low crime rates, especially when it comes to violent crimes against tourists. While petty theft can happen, it’s not rampant, so a little vigilance goes a long way.

Our locals are welcoming and often speak English, making it easy to navigate and ask for help. Croatia’s healthcare system is reliable, and Croatia offers excellent medical facilities if you need them.

6. Make Use of Public Transport

If you want to explore further, don’t be afraid of using the local buses. The inter-city services are efficient and very clean while also being mostly tourist-friendly. Buses visit all popular tourist sites and cities, and it’s a lot cheaper than taxis or car hire.

7. Don’t Be Afraid Of Driving, But Do So Carefully

If you want the freedom to explore on your own steam, you could hire a car. However, do be aware that some of Croatia’s roads are very steep and winding. Don’t let that put you off; make sure that you stick to the speed limit and only use the roads you feel comfortable on.

8. Croatia Is Now In The Schengen Zone

As of January 2023, Croatia has officially become a member of the Schengen Zone, marking a significant milestone in its integration with the European Union.

After years of preparation and meeting the necessary criteria, Croatia’s entry into the Schengen Area has streamlined travel for both its citizens and international visitors. This development allows you passport-free movement across borders between Croatia and other Schengen countries, making travel within the region more convenient and efficient. 

9. Hop From Island To Island

Rather than making day trips from Split or Dubrovnik to the islands of Hvar , Vis, Korcula, etc., plan your itinerary to jump from one island to the next. Each has a distinctly different character, and there are ferries and shared water taxis that will take you from one to the next without having to backtrack to the main port.

A bit of planning will save you time and money and is an excellent way to work your way from Split to Dubrovnik or vice versa.

We visited both Hvar (as a day trip) and Korcula (over several days) and vastly preferred Korcula . While Hvar is beautiful and definitely has its charm, its higher-end type of travel seems to attract more of the “monied” party crowd . Since we left our yacht at home, it wasn’t our scene. It depends on what you’re looking for, but Korcula was our favorite.

In contrast, Korcula is quiet, laid back, beautiful, and relaxing. If you go, rent bicycles to tour the island and explore beautiful beaches and fun beach bars. If you’re into wine, you should also pop into local wineries and try some of their Grk wine, found only in Korcula.

10. Know About Tipping

It can be hard to know from location to location about tipping. You’re not expected to tip in Croatia, but it’s always appreciated. If you want to do so, e.g., you enjoyed the service you received, then around 10-15% of the total bill is a good rule of thumb.

11. We Speak English

While many Croatians in tourist areas speak English, it’s always appreciated when travelers make an effort to speak a bit of the Croatian language. Simple phrases like “hello” (bok), “thank you” (hvala), and “please” (molim) can go a long way in enhancing your interactions with us locals.

12. Don’t Forget The National Parks

It’s easy to stick to the beaches and cities, but the national parks in Croatia are so blindingly beautiful it would be a crying shame to miss them. Check out Plitvice Lakes (a UNESCO world heritage site, by the way), Krka National Park , and Paklenica to get you started.

13. Check The Cruise Ship Schedules

But you’re not going on a cruise, we hear you say! Maybe not, but you will want to be aware of them regardless. Dubrovnik can have 10,000 cruise ship passengers on high-traffic days , resulting in shoulder-to-shoulder congestion in the Old Town combined with all the other coach bus tour groups and independent travelers.

Split and Dubrovnik are popular areas famous for their Old Towns. Medieval towns tend to have narrow streets and cover a finite, typically small, area. Cruise passengers often explore these towns in large tour groups. Do you see what we’re getting at?

If you can visit either of these cities on a day where there are only 1 or 2 cruise ships in port , rather than 7 or 8 (or even when the ports are hosting smaller vessels rather than the behemoths), the Old Town that you want to enjoy will be noticeably less crowded. This worked out well for us in Dubrovnik ! Explore another part of the city on high-traffic cruise ship days or take a day trip to an island or another town.

14. Cash Is King In Some Places

While credit cards are widely accepted in most bars, restaurants, cafes, and attractions, especially in tourist areas,  main resorts, towns, and cities, smaller businesses, local markets, and rural areas may prefer cash.

It’s a good idea to have some local currency – remember, we now use the euro – on hand for these situations.

15. Know That The Best Beaches Are Rocky

Before you go to the beach, know that most of Croatia’s beaches are rocky. There are a few sandy beaches, but the majority will have pebbles or rocks. It’s a good idea to take some sea shoes with you, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

16. Don’t Be Afraid To Try New Foods

Croatian cuisine is a delightful blend of Mediterranean, Central European, and Balkan flavors. Don’t miss the chance to savor local dishes like seafood risotto, peka (a delicious meat and vegetable dish), and pasticada (marinated beef). And, of course, indulge in the local desserts.

17. Venture Outside Of The Main Cities

When we toured around southern Croatia , eventually, the crowds got to us. You don’t have to go too far outside the main tourist centers to find peace and still have the beautiful scenery you want.

Less than an hour’s drive from Split, Trogir is a fantastic town right on the water with a small but atmospheric old town and beautiful beaches. Trogir can be visited as a day trip from Split, or better yet, make it your base with Split being the day trip.

Near Dubrovnik, a great day trip option is Cavtat. Reachable by bus, or even better by water taxi, Cavtat is a small town that feels worlds away from busy and crowded Dubrovnik in about an hour. You can do walks around the island and plenty of accommodations and waterside restaurants, so bring  your comfy shoes.

There is so much more to Croatia than Dubrovnik , Split, and the islands in between them.

18. Drink Local

Croatia boasts a long tradition of winemaking, and each region has its own distinct grape varieties and winemaking techniques. Whether you find yourself in Istria, the Pelješac Peninsula, or the beautiful vineyards of Slavonia, take the opportunity to go wine tasting. 19. Tap Water Is Safe

One less thing to worry about while in Croatia is the tap water. It’s perfectly safe and very drinkable. Feel free to fill up your reusable water bottle and stay hydrated as you explore the beautiful landscapes and cities without the need to purchase bottled water.

20. Don’t Be A Drunk

Croatia is known for its warm hospitality and vibrant nightlife, but it’s important to enjoy it responsibly. After years of dealing with unruly behavior from tourists, some destinations, like Hvar Town, have implemented fines for public drunkenness. It’s not only frowned upon but can also result in a fine of up to €700 .

So, while enjoying the nightlife, keep in mind to drink responsibly and avoid public disturbances to ensure a pleasant experience for yourself and those around you.

21. Use Zadar As A Base

Zadar is a fascinating cit y to explore in its own right, but it can also be used as a base for a couple of days to explore several of Croatia’s incredible national parks . This includes the famous Plitvice and Krka National Parks waterfalls and hiking in the nearby mountains at the less touristy Paklenica National Park.

Rent a car to give yourself the most flexibility if you feel comfortable driving – or get a private transfer for a luxury touch. Our top off-the-beaten-path tip for visiting Zadar is to check out Pag Island.

22. Explore The Istrian Peninsula

Istria, the northern part of Croatia bordering Slovenia, was one of our favorite parts of the country. We based ourselves in Rovinj  and explored the coast and inland from there.

Istria should be on the itinerary of any foodie out there . The region is home to some of Croatia’s best wines, truffles, and olive oil . Since the Italians once ruled the area, it has a distinctly Italian feel that you don’t experience in the rest of Croatia . Unfortunately, that often manifests itself in low-quality pizza and pasta in tourist restaurants.

Do yourself a favor and stick to ordering dishes with local ingredients. Renting a car to explore the small hilltop town s, such as Groznjan and Motovun, makes for a great road trip!

Rovinj itself is an interesting town to explore on foot. With some great weather, you can work on your farmer’s tan, exploring the shops, restaurants, and churches during the morning.

Then show off that tan on the beaches, walking distance south past the harbor and along the coast . Just be warned – the further you walk, the fewer clothes people wear.

The southern end of the beaches is not for the shy. Let it all hang out, as they say!

23. Spend Some Time On Pag Island

Pag has an entirely different landscape than much of the rest of Croatia; in some parts, it almost seems like you’re driving on the moon. A handy bridge from the mainland to Pag Island makes it an easy one-hour drive from Zadar. The island is probably best known for its cheese.

While they make many different types of cheese, the most famous is made from sheep’s milk. Salt from the surrounding ocean gets deposited on the vegetation of Pag Island, particularly a hardy type of local sage, which the sheep then eat. This provides a distinctive flavor to the Pag cheese.

Pag Island also has some great beaches . Zrce Beach is the “Ibiza of Croatia during the summer months.” Get your rave on at the Hideout Festival or laze about one of the enormous beach clubs. If dancing with drunk 20-something strangers isn’t your thing, the beach is deserted by September, but the water is still warm and swimmable. We practically had the place to ourselves!

When you’re sitting in your hotel room (or rental apartment) balcony in Rovinj or Zadar, eating some incredible truffle cheese from Pag Island and washing it down with a nice bottle of Istrian wine, you can thank us later. ;) You’re welcome!

24. Check Out A Local Sporting Event

Few things offer a better immersion into the local culture than attending a local sporting event. In most of the world, this means checking out the local club schedule for a nearby football match. In other parts of the world, this could mean anything from cricket to sumo wrestling. This goes for any country, really, but keep it in mind for Croatia, a nation filled with sports enthusiasts.

Some of the major sporting events in Croatia are:

• Davis Cup: Croatia has a successful tennis history, and the Davis Cup matches featuring the Croatian national team are highly anticipated events
• Zagreb Indoors: This ATP Tour tennis tournament attracts top-ranked players and is held annually in Zagreb
• Zagreb Marathon: Held in the capital city, the Zagreb Marathon attracts both local and international runners, offering a scenic route through the city.
• Croatian Basketball League: Basketball is another beloved sport in Croatia, and attending a game featuring top Croatian teams is a thrilling experience

25. You Need Comfortable Shoes

26. Take A Day Trip (Or More) To Mostar

The city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina is an easy (although somewhat long) day trip from either Split or Dubrovnik. Plenty of travel companies offer tours. Public, long-distance buses are also comfortable and easy to arrange yourself.

Mostar is one of our favorite places in the Balkans. The culture is vastly different from Croatia because of its history, religious diversity, and fantastic food . If you can spare the time, spend a night here to see the sights and enjoy the food thoroughly.

Thrill-seekers can even sign up for a course to jump off the famous bridge . For wimps like us, keep your eye out for tour groups. There are plenty of “fake” divers on the bridge who can only attract a crowd and then solicit tips. The actual dives seem to happen as soon as the next tour group shows up on the water’s edge.

27. Rental Apartments Can Be A Great Option

When it comes to accommodation in Croatia, don’t overlook the convenience and cost-effectiveness of rental apartments. This lodging option not only offers comfort and privacy but can also save you money, especially if you’re open to staying a bit further from the bustling city centers or old towns.

What a great post. Like you, I find it impossible to have a ‘favourite’ destination in Croatia. I loved Cavtat (for the reasons you mention!), Rovinj and Pula, Trogir, Zadar, Sibenik (and Krka Park is majestic) and also Korcula. I went to Brac for a day from Split and hired a scooter – an awesome way to explore the gorgeous coastal villages like Postira, etc. Reading your blog has fuelled my flames – I’m desperate to go back there now!!

One word, amazingly beautiful country. If this country had 10 months of tropical weather like Thailand it would get 100 million tourist as the towns, the food, the nature, the watetrfalls and 1200 islands are so unique and just heaven on earth.
