Primus & dean ween group are touring australia in april.
Primus are making their way back to Aussie shores for a national tour, bringing their ’90s-defining sounds across the country.
It’s been a while in between drinks for the band, who last visited Down Under for the Big Day Out in 2014.
Helmed by their virtuosic bass player Les Claypool, the band have been a long-time favourite for Australian orders. They’ll be bringing cuts from their expansive discography including ‘Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver’, ‘My Name Is Mud’ and ‘Jerry Was a Race Car Driver’.
They’ll be joined by the Dean Ween Group — a side project of Ween guitarist Mickey Malchiondo. Word on the street is that they’ll be blasting through a few Ween hits too.

They're still killing it. Played a nice variety of their hits, with perhaps a bit more focus on Frizzle Fry than on other albums, just three songs from post-Brown album, including one from their upcoming album. Was stoked to see them play Over the Falls... Les fucked up on Southbound Pachyderm and stopped, then threw in Mr. Knowitall as penance before resuming Southbound Pachyderm to finish out the encore. Hell of a show...
Les was interactive and chatty as always. This was the third time I'd seen them and it was just as good as the first, which was rad. Primus rules and I will see them again whenever I can.

Best concert ever!!! They played for allmost 3 hours. And they played all their old songs. The sound was perfect, the crowd was perfect, overall best night ever. Less claypool and his band rockend the crowd. I like their old hits kuch more than the experimental things less claypool tried the last couple of years. Primus played so good everybody was going out of their minds. Thanks for a great concert Guy's!
The atmosphere was really something else, like being on drugs but not really. It was a trip, all right. About midways through the concert they left the stage, and four POPEYE-cartoons played on a monitor for about 20 minutes. Some people got slightly irritated but I liked it. It was a nice break from the music and it really fits with Primus' antics.
Definitely worth going to!

Their live performances have earned them a devoted following over the decades, and to this day, their shows still attract large crowds. They are hitting the road again and will be returning to Australia in 2018 for a national tour with special guests, The Dean Ween Group .
Primus is responsible for some of the most cutting edge and original rock music of the 1990’s. they were strictly an underground phenomenon that refused to be pigeonholed – merging alternative, punk, country, roots rock, and experimental music. couple that with claypool’s penchant for witty and often humorous storytelling lyrics, it made them a genuinely intriguing proposition. in the years between their third and fourth albums, their cult grew rapidly, and they fully infiltrated the mainstream., building a large and loyal following first in and around san francisco before eventually going global, primus kicked things off with a string of releases that are now considered classic alternative rock titles – 1989’s ‘suck on this, ‘ 1990’s ‘frizzle fry,’ 1991’s ‘sailing the seas of cheese, ‘ 1993’s ‘pork soda, ‘ and 1995’s ‘tales from the punchbowl. ‘, a grammy nominated and multi-platinum selling band, primus have toured with some of rock’s biggest names (jane’s addiction, public enemy, rush and u2). they’ve headlined the third-ever lollapalooza festival, and issued a variety of crafty music videos, which stood out in sharp contrast to the ultra-seriousness of most other video clips at the time., the desaturating seven is their ninth studio album which was released in september this year. primus are les claypool , larry lalonde & tim alexander and no doubt, fans will welcome their return., ‘ambushing the storm’, australian tour 2018, friday 6 th april, enmore theatre, sydney, tickets available at:, www.ticketek.com.au, sunday 8 th april, eatons hill hotel, brisbane, www.ticketmaster.com.au, www.oztix.com.au, wednesday 11 th april, thebarton theatre, adelaide, friday 13 th april, metro city, perth, sunday 15 th april, palais theatre, melbourne, tickets on sale friday 8 th december at 10.00am, follow primus.

Dean Ween & Les Claypool Swap Sit-Ins To Close Primus’ Australian Tour [Video]
On April 6th, Primus commenced their five-date Australian tour in support of the group’s ninth studio album, The Desaturating Seven . Marking Primus’ first performances in Australia since 2014’s Big Day Out Festival , the Les Claypool -led trio tapped longtime friend Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo to open each show with a performance from his Dean Ween Group .
During Primus’ and The Dean Ween Group’s Sunday night show at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre , the two frontmen swapped sit-ins, with Les Claypool first joining the Dean Ween Group before Mickey returned the favor with a guest appearance during Primus’ headlining performance. Both Dean and Les have a longstanding friendship and have exchanged sit-ins regularly in the past.
Initially, Claypool joined the Dean Ween Group for their take the title track of Ween’s 1997 album, The Mollusk . Later in the night, Dean came out for Primus’ extended encore, lending his skills on “Southbound Pachyderm”, a tune he previously sat-in on last July . Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna canceled after Austrian police say foiled terrorist plot targeted shows
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows in Vienna have been canceled because of what Austrian police say was a planned terrorist attack targeting the concerts.
“With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety,” Barracuda Music, an event organizer in the city, posted Wednesday evening on Instagram.
Taylor Nation, an Instagram account run by Swift’s team, reposted the message to its story.
According to the post, all tickets will be refunded and ticketholders can visit a website to request refunds.
Swift's website also appears to reflect the cancellation. The Vienna shows under the "tour" tab now have a note accompanying the date and location information.
"*All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days," it says.
Swift has yet to say anything on social media, nor has she confirmed the cancellations.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer shared his disappointment over the cancellations on X and said the situation was serious. He thanked officials for identifying the threat early and preventing what could have been a tragedy.
Swift was scheduled to perform at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the international leg of the Eras Tour.
Earlier, officials said two people were arrested Wednesday in connection with allegations of plans to attack major events in Vienna, including Swift's coming concerts .
Two U.S. officials familiar with the investigation said Austrian law enforcement is looking for an additional person or people who may have some knowledge of the plans.
One of the individuals who were arrested by Austrian federal and state police was a 19-year-old who is alleged to have pledged his allegiance to ISIS, Vienna State Police Director Franz Ruf and Police Chief Gerhard Pürstl said at a news conference Wednesday.
Ruf said Thursday in an interview with Austria’s public broadcaster ORF that the suspect had uploaded an oath of allegiance to the current leader of ISIS to an internet account just a few weeks ago.
The pair had aspirational plans for attacking Vienna’s major events sites and specifically had homed in on this coming weekend’s Swift concerts, according to two U.S. officials briefed on the matter. They both became radicalized through the internet and are alleged to have had specific and detailed plans for how to carry out an attack, the officials said.
They had been under surveillance for some time and were well-known to the Austrians, the officials said.
A bomb squad found chemical substances when the 19-year-old was arrested, authorities said. Investigators were working to determine whether the substances could have been used to build a bomb, authorities said.
Officials said that the 19-year-old bought chemicals but not all the components needed to assemble a bomb and that most likely he would not have been able to do before this weekend’s events.
However, the officials say Austrian law enforcement believed that they should be taken into custody to make sure the pair did not try to conduct an attack using other means.
Ultimately, the two were arrested as officials announced a robust security plan had been put in place for the Swift concerts and Vienna at large. Swift’s team then announced that the concerts would be canceled.
Austria’s Cobra unit, which is similar to the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team, assisted with the arrests.
Two U.S. officials familiar with the investigation said Austrian law enforcement are looking for an additional individual or individuals who may have some knowledge of this attempted attack.
Officials in Europe and in the U.S. told NBC News that there was no specific plot to injure Swift herself but that the attack was focused on the event.
A police official had said earlier that there were no plans to cancel the concerts and told reporters that “the concrete danger has been minimized.” It is not clear why those plans changed.
Swift has spoken about her concerns of a terrorist attack at one of her stadium shows. In 2019, she told Elle magazine it was her biggest fear.
“After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting , I was completely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months,” Swift said ahead of the Lover Tour, which was then canceled because of Covid.
She added, “There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe.”
“My fear of violence has continued into my personal life,” she said. “I carry QuikClot army grade bandage dressing, which is for gunshot or stab wounds.”
Swift rarely cancels shows. Most recently, she postponed the second of three Eras shows in Rio de Janeiro because of extreme temperatures after a fan died at the first of the shows owing to the heat.

Taylor Swift cancels Vienna Eras tour concerts after two arrested in alleged terror plot
Taylor Swift 's three Eras Tour concerts in Vienna were canceled after government officials confirmed a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, the local concert promoter announced Wednesday.
The security situation was very serious and a tragedy was averted, Austria's Chancellor Karl Nehammer wrote in a social media post .
"We have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety," said Barracuda Music, the promoter for the Austrian shows. "All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days."

Swift had been set to perform in Vienna on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Earlier Wednesday, Vienna Federal Ministry of the Interior officials confirmed the arrest of two individuals who are "suspected of having planned attacks at major events," including Swift's concerts.
"During our investigations, we identified preparatory actions and noted that the 19-year-old suspect had a particular focus on the Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna," said Franz Ruf, director general for public security. He alleged that the suspect, an Austrian citizen, had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
Another suspect was later arrested in Vienna. Police searched the residence of one of the suspects in Ternitz, Lower Austria, and were analyzing items from the home. Local media, citing police sources, said three suspects were still on the run.
Taylor Swift terrorist threat suspect confessed he intended to kill fans: Officials
"The cancellation of the Taylor Swift concerts by the organizers is a bitter disappointment for all fans in Austria," Nehammer wrote in an X post translated by the social media site.
He thanked emergency services that are investigating at "full speed."
'Making sure that her fans are kept safe'
Officials initially said police would increase security measures at the shows, but the performances were ultimately called off. Swift has performed 126 Eras Tour concerts so far, and these are her first cancellations. Other dates have been postponed due to weather.
This isn't the first time a concert has become a target. In 2017, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. The brothers responsible for the attack wanted to "advance the ideology of Islam," according to the judge who sentenced the surviving sibling.
“It’s a choice you never want to make, but she would have a really good rapport with the local police and government agencies,” says Andrea Davis, the president and CEO of the Resiliency Initiative , a global consulting company focused on crisis management and risk mitigation planning. “These were credible threats, and it was the right thing to do. She has a pattern of making sure that her fans are kept safe.”
In fact, Swift confessed in Elle magazine in 2019 ahead of her Reputation Stadium Tour that her biggest fear concerns her fans' safety.
"After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting , I was completely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months," she wrote. "There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe."
Swift's only remaining European tour dates are five nights at Wembley Stadium in London from Aug. 15-20. She then returns to North America in October before wrapping up the Eras Tour in December.
Taylor Swift fans react: 'It's really devastating'
It's not uncommon for Swift's fans to cross oceans to see her perform , and many ticketholders are heartbroken over the cancellations.
Emily Reyes drove with her boyfriend John Bechtel and his sister Hannah Bechtel from Greenville, South Carolina, to Charlotte, North Carolina. "We paid for parking and we had just gotten around to our gate when I saw that all the Vienna shows had been canceled," Reyes, 23, says.
In April, she got three tickets to a Vienna show because it was cheaper than Swift's fall shows in Miami, and she wanted to surprise her sister-in-law. She made a custom "Reputation" catsuit to wear Saturday night.
"A lot of people are traveling for these shows, and it's really devastating," she says. "I wish that they could have rescheduled and just had a really high security to check everything and all belongings — even if that means clear bags and getting patted down and going through metal detectors."
Around 65,000 people were expected to attend each night as well as up to 15,000 people outside the stadium without tickets, which fed security concerns.
Other Swifties took to social media to share their disappointment over the jarring development.
- “Sitting in a Vienna hotel room processing the fact that the Taylor Swift concert I've been looking forward to for a year, that I flew halfway around the world for, has just been cancelled,” @wordnerd212 wrote on X.
- “Good job I’m not currently sat on a plane to Vienna for Taylor Swift… oh wait,” X user @carleypagett wrote.
- “We were meant to go and see Taylor Swift in Vienna tomorrow night,” @jessiblah wrote on X. “We were just saying we would start to make our friendship bracelets, I had packed the beads in my case. I’m heartbroken.”
- “I am devastated. For over a year I looked forward to this,” X user @Natascha_Strobl wrote. “I made all the bracelets. Taylor Swift in my home city. And now it’s not happening. I have no words. She will never come to Vienna again. That‘s just it. This meant so much. I so wanted to go this concert.”
- “I will need 3-5 business years to recover emotionally from Taylor Swift‘s shows being cancelled in Vienna,” @DJChenks wrote on X.
First cancellations of the Eras Tour
Of Swift’s 126 Eras Tour concerts, she has postponed two shows, delayed a show and canceled two opening acts due to weather.
In Nashville on May 7, a torrential downpour delayed the concert by four hours. Swift didn’t wrap until 1:30 a.m. On July 1, Gracie Abram’s opening set in Cincinnati was canceled after heavy rain delays. Swift brought Abrams out for a duet during her surprise set. In Buenos Aires, Swift pushed back her Oct. 10 show to Oct. 12 after heavy rain fell on the Argentinian capital.
"I love a rain show but I’m never going to endanger my fans or my fellow performers and crew," she wrote on X , formerly Twitter.
A week later in Rio de Janeiro, she moved her Nov. 18 concert to Nov. 20 because of sweltering temperatures, one day after a fan died at her show.
On Feb. 23, Sabrina Carpenter’s opening set was canceled in Sydney due to lightning.
Tickets to be refunded for Taylor Swift's Vienna shows
For fans with resale tickets through StubHub, the company says it will provide buyers with a 120% voucher toward another purchase. “Buyers who prefer a 100% cash refund can make the request directly in their StubHub wallet,” the site said Wednesday in a statement.
Barracuda Music, the Austrian tour promoter, posted that fans can expect full refunds within 10 business days and can get updates at https://www.oeticket.com/help/updates/ .
Second violent incident involving Taylor Swift fans
This is the second Swift-related violent incident in just over a week.
On July 29, three children — ages 9, 7 and 6 — died after a mass stabbing that injured 10 others in Southport, U.K., during a Taylor Swift-themed class meant for children.
Swif t spoke out on the incident the day after the attack, saying she was "at a complete loss."
"The horror of yesterday's attack is washing over me continuously and I’m just completely in shock," she wrote on her Instagram story .
An 18-year-old has been charged, and a wave of false messaging online that wrongly identified the suspect as an Islamist migrant triggered days of rioting. More than 140 people have been charged in relation to that violence.

Review: Primus, Puddles Pity Party and Coheed and Cambria uniquely rock Stage AE
Bass guitar master les claypool showed off his 1-of-a-kind talent.
PITTSBURGH ― It was all about that bass Thursday at a sold-out Stage AE, with Les Claypool and his truly alternative rock band Primus eclectically rocking 5,500 fans under the clouds.
Claypool's one-of-a-kind bass guitar thumps sounded thunderous, twangy, trippy, funky and menacing − and that was just on the opening song, "Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers," for which he played both super-fast and with stomping, hypnotic intensity.
Near the end of "My Friend Fats," Claypool cajoled from his bass a sound similar to the vinyl scratching of an old-school rap DJ.
It was hard to shift focus from Claypool's compelling riffage, though bandmates Larry LaLonde (guitars) and Tim Alexander (drums) kept pace with that percussive bass, forging a sound that flitted from funk-metal to prog-rock, leaving plenty of space for hooks, a built-in advantage for trios.
Amid those hooks, Claypool's quirky singing voice rang out clearly. When bantering, his voice sounded like a mix between a clever carny and rural UFO eyewitness.
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
"I could be wrong, but I think this is the Iron City," Claypool deadpanned to LaLonde while motioning toward the huge Iron City (beer) billboard across the river atop Mount Washington quite visible from the Stage AE stage. "The Iron City," he continued. "That means there are no wrinkles on anybody's clothing around here."
As for his clothing, Claypool opted for a flannel ballcap and a green jacket, or at least it looked green in the shrouded dark stage lighting.
The greasy grooved "Frizzle Fry" was typical of a song where fans danced with their feet stationary, bobbing their heads and shoulders staunchly to the beat.
A brain-melting cover of Rush's "Cygnus X-1," featured vocal help from Claudio Sanchez, of main support act Coheed and Cambria, who got into the spirit wearing a Syrinx hooded cloak.
Primus played almost an hour before getting to alt-rock radio hits "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" then a few songs later "My Name is Mud" rife with Claypool's hearty bass thumb slaps, ground rattling distortion effects and LaLonde's buzzsaw guitar. A good number of fans in the front shouted along with the final five words in the line "I kissed him upside the cranium with that aluminum baseball bat."
Straight up to the encore, there was intermittent crowd surfing. Everyone looked to be having a fun time basking in Primus' off-kilter glory.
Support act Coheed and Cambria was well-received, delivering a 75-minute set of progressive metal that had many spectators mouthing along to lyrics, too.
Coheed and Cambria's heavy guitars didn't overpower the band's groove-oriented melodicism.
Vocalist-guitarist Sanchez did a few fun hair flips, tossing around his mighty mane. Bandmates said how stoked they were to have thrown out the ceremonial first pitch earlier that afternoon at the Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park.
Coheed and Cambria played a new song "Blindside Sunny" that Sanchez explained was meant to be danceable. Bodies obliged.
"The Liars Club" from 2022 brought an engrossing punk-rock edge.
The show started memorably and enjoyably with Puddles Pity Party, a 6-foot-8 singer whose golden voice and head-to-toe clown costume equally commanded attention.
Puddles Pity Party stayed serious-faced, even when "strumming" an inflatable-looking, fake twin-neck guitar, giving a lounge singer-ish moxie to mashups like Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" melded with "Let It Go" from the film "Frozen," and the melody of The Who's "Pinball Wizard" with the lyrics replaced by Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues."
The alter ego of Philadelphia-born musician Michael Geier, Puddles brought smiles with his "Stairway to Heaven" that featured the lyrics from the "Gilligan's Island" theme. He ended robustly with Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" concluding with the drum cadence from Metallica's "One."

Town Famous for Royal and Hollywood Guests Is Ravaged by Wildfires
Fast-moving fires have destroyed a third of the buildings in the picturesque town of Jasper, Alberta, and its national park. But the mayor hopes to rebuild.

By Ian Austen
Reporting from Ottawa
Queen Elizabeth II vacationed there, as did her parents before her. Hollywood’s royalty were regular visitors, too. Marilyn Monroe filmed scenes for “River of No Return” there, and “The Emperor Waltz” brought Bing Crosby and Joan Fontaine to its golf courses and tennis courts. The mountains of Jasper, Alberta, have also stood in for peaks around the world in other movies.
Above all, Jasper National Park represented Canada both to the world and for many Canadians for over a century.
Now, tens of thousands of acres of the park and its mountain town of Jasper are either burning in an inferno or have been reduced to rubble and ash. Parks Canada, the national agency, said that since two large-scale wildfires, which sent up a wall of flame more than 300 feet high, were whisked into the community on ferocious winds earlier in the week, 358 of its 1,113 buildings have been destroyed.
“The nature of this fire was such that it humbled the humans on the ground,” Richard Ireland, the mayor of Jasper, told reporters in Hinton, Alberta, on Friday. He added that he believed that nothing could have stopped the destruction and that all necessary preparations had been taken.
“We want to be in the mountains,” he said. “We want to be in nature. And that means our community is exposed to the threat of wildfire. There are lots of forested communities in Alberta that are exposed.”
The cause of the wildfires is still unclear.
In the vast mountain park, which attracts about 2.5 million visitors each year, the fire has consumed more than 140 square miles, Parks Canada said. About 20,000 park visitors and 5,000 Jasper residents were evacuated late Monday as ash began raining on the town in advance of the flames.
A team of researchers said last year that climate change has increased the risk of large wildfires in Canada , where the fire season typically runs from March to October. Earlier this year, Canadian wildfires also prompted air quality warnings in places including Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Before returning on Friday for a tour of the town, where the fire was still burning, Mr. Ireland had said that he was “prepared for the worst.” On the tour, the mayor discovered that his own home was a charred ruin.
Yet there were some glimmers of positive news on Friday.
Wildfire fighters from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are expected to arrive over the weekend to help battle the 577 active blazes in Alberta and neighboring British Columbia. They will join crews that have flown in from other parts of Canada where wildfires have been relatively scarce this summer.
The Canadian National Railway restarted freight train service through Jasper on Friday, reopening an economically vital corridor between the Pacific Coast and the rest of North America.
Officials said that rain and lower temperatures had allowed 158 firefighters who remained in Jasper to at least halt the fire’s advance, although no one had any opinion on when it might be brought under control there (hot and dry weather is expected to return on the weekend). And all the town’s water-treatment facilities, its schools, hospital and other important infrastructure have been saved, according to Parks Canada.
“It is a better day,” the mayor said. “I don’t want to say a brighter day, because I want it to get dark and thunder and lightning, rain like crazy.”
The worst-hit areas are largely residential neighborhoods on the west and south sides of the town, according to the parks agency. No one has died or been seriously injured because of the fires.
Mr. Ireland cautioned that when residents returned — still several weeks away, officials said — they might find that even if their homes or business buildings had been untouched by fire, they might nevertheless be severely damaged by smoke or water.
“It’s going to be difficult,” he said of the day when the town reopened to its citizens. “The pain that will be felt almost defies description. It is beyond comprehension.”
Jeff Morris, a driver and guide for a tour company in Jasper, told the CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster, that posts on social media suggested that his house had been saved, while the rest of his subdivision had been destroyed.
It looks like almost an “apocalyptic nightmare,” he told the broadcaster, adding that he was already preparing to help neighbors sort through the remains of their homes. “I’ll help, wherever, wherever my hands are needed. We’ll put the town back together.”
Along with the neighboring Banff National Park, Jasper was made a park in large part to promote tourist travel by train, which was initially the only way to reach the community. Claire Campbell, who edited and contributed to a scholarly history about what is now Parks Canada, said that the striking mountain scenery soon became an international symbol of the then young nation.
“Both at the founding of the original Rocky Mountain parks right through to the present day, images of these parks have been exported internationally as representative of Canada by the federal government,” said Professor Campbell, who is Canadian and teaches Canadian history at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. “In some ways, we see how the world sees us, and then we adopt that image, as well.”
Both parks dislodged Indigenous people from their lands and, until recently, shut them out of their operations.
Professor Campbell said that Jasper, where Canadian National built a wood lodge surrounded by wooden cabins, always had a different reputation from Banff, where the Canadian Pacific Railway built an enormous, stone-clad hotel in the style of a French château.
“Jasper was the more rustic of the two and offered a more romantic, back-to-nature atmosphere,” she said.
The original Jasper Park Lodge burned down in the early 1950s. Its replacement, which opened in 1952 and is now known as the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, survived the current fire, but four other buildings in the complex have been lost, the hotel chain said.
Mr. Ireland, the mayor of Jasper, said that he had no doubt that his town would rebuild.
“The mountains are still there,” he said. “They will be there and so will our community.”

What Kamala Harris has said so far on key issues in her campaign
As she ramps up her nascent presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris is revealing how she will address the key issues facing the nation.
In speeches and rallies, she has voiced support for continuing many of President Joe Biden’s measures, such as lowering drug costs , forgiving student loan debt and eliminating so-called junk fees. But Harris has made it clear that she has her own views on some key matters, particularly Israel’s treatment of Gazans in its war with Hamas.
In a departure from her presidential run in 2020, the Harris campaign has confirmed that she’s moved away from many of her more progressive stances, such as her interest in a single-payer health insurance system and a ban on fracking.
Harris is also expected to put her own stamp and style on matters ranging from abortion to the economy to immigration, as she aims to walk a fine line of taking credit for the administration’s accomplishments while not being jointly blamed by voters for its shortcomings.
Her early presidential campaign speeches have offered insights into her priorities, though she’s mainly voiced general talking points and has yet to release more nuanced plans. Like Biden, she intends to contrast her vision for America with that of former President Donald Trump. ( See Trump’s campaign promises here .)
“In this moment, I believe we face a choice between two different visions for our nation: one focused on the future, the other focused on the past,” she told members of the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta at an event in Indianapolis in late July. “And with your support, I am fighting for our nation’s future.”
Here’s what we know about Harris’ views:
Harris took on the lead role of championing abortion rights for the administration after Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022. This past January, she started a “ reproductive freedoms tour ” to multiple states, including a stop in Minnesota thought to be the first by a sitting US president or vice president at an abortion clinic .
On abortion access, Harris embraced more progressive policies than Biden in the 2020 campaign, as a candidate criticizing his previous support for the Hyde Amendment , a measure that blocks federal funds from being used for most abortions.
Policy experts suggested that although Harris’ current policies on abortion and reproductive rights may not differ significantly from Biden’s, as a result of her national tour and her own focus on maternal health , she may be a stronger messenger.
High prices are a top concern for many Americans who are struggling to afford the cost of living after a spell of steep inflation. Many voters give Biden poor marks for his handling of the economy, and Harris may also face their wrath.
In her early campaign speeches, Harris has echoed many of the same themes as Biden, saying she wants to give Americans more opportunities to get ahead. She’s particularly concerned about making care – health care, child care, elder care and family leave – more affordable and available.
Harris promised at a late July rally to continue the Biden administration’s drive to eliminate so-called “junk fees” and to fully disclose all charges, such as for events, lodging and car rentals. In early August, the administration proposed a rule that would ban airlines from charging parents extra fees to have their kids sit next to them.
On day one, I will take on price gouging and bring down costs. We will ban more of those hidden fees and surprise late charges that banks and other companies use to pad their profits.”
Since becoming vice president, Harris has taken more moderate positions, but a look at her 2020 campaign promises reveals a more progressive bent than Biden.
As a senator and 2020 presidential candidate, Harris proposed providing middle-class and working families with a refundable tax credit of up to $6,000 a year (per couple) to help keep up with living expenses. Titled the LIFT the Middle Class Act, or Livable Incomes for Families Today, the measure would have cost at the time an estimated $3 trillion over 10 years.
Unlike a typical tax credit, the bill would allow taxpayers to receive the benefit – up to $500 – on a monthly basis so families don’t have to turn to payday loans with very high interest rates.
As a presidential candidate, Harris also advocated for raising the corporate income tax rate to 35%, where it was before the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that Trump and congressional Republicans pushed through Congress reduced the rate to 21%. That’s higher than the 28% Biden has proposed.
Affordable housing was also on Harris’ radar. As a senator, she introduced the Rent Relief Act, which would establish a refundable tax credit for renters who annually spend more than 30% of their gross income on rent and utilities. The amount of the credit would range from 25% to 100% of the excess rent, depending on the renter’s income.
Harris called housing a human right and said in a 2019 news release on the bill that every American deserves to have basic security and dignity in their own home.
Consumer debt
Hefty debt loads, which weigh on people’s finances and hurt their ability to buy homes, get car loans or start small businesses, are also an area of interest to Harris.
As vice president, she has promoted the Biden administration’s initiatives on student debt, which have so far forgiven more than $168 billion for nearly 4.8 million borrowers . In mid-July, Harris said in a post on X that “nearly 950,000 public servants have benefitted” from student debt forgiveness, compared with only 7,000 when Biden was inaugurated.
A potential Harris administration could keep that momentum going – though some of Biden’s efforts have gotten tangled up in litigation, such as a program aimed at cutting monthly student loan payments for roughly 3 million borrowers enrolled in a repayment plan the administration implemented last year.
The vice president has also been a leader in the White House efforts to ban medical debt from credit reports, noting that those with medical debt are no less likely to repay a loan than those who don’t have unpaid medical bills.
In a late July statement praising North Carolina’s move to relieve the medical debt of about 2 million residents, Harris said that she is “committed to continuing to relieve the burden of medical debt and creating a future where every person has the opportunity to build wealth and thrive.”
Health care
Harris, who has had shifting stances on health care in the past, confirmed in late July through her campaign that she no longer supports a single-payer health care system .
During her 2020 campaign, Harris advocated for shifting the US to a government-backed health insurance system but stopped short of wanting to completely eliminate private insurance.
The measure called for transitioning to a Medicare-for-All-type system over 10 years but continuing to allow private insurance companies to offer Medicare plans.
The proposal would not have raised taxes on the middle class to pay for the coverage expansion. Instead, it would raise the needed funds by taxing Wall Street trades and transactions and changing the taxation of offshore corporate income.
When it comes to reducing drug costs, Harris previously proposed allowing the federal government to set “a fair price” for any drug sold at a cheaper price in any economically comparable country, including Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Japan or Australia. If manufacturers were found to be price gouging, the government could import their drugs from abroad or, in egregious cases, use its existing but never-used “march-in” authority to license a drug company’s patent to a rival that would produce the medication at a lower cost.
Harris has been a champion on climate and environmental justice for decades. As California’s attorney general, Harris sued big oil companies like BP and ConocoPhillips, and investigated Exxon Mobil for its role in climate change disinformation. While in the Senate, she sponsored the Green New Deal resolution.
During her 2020 campaign, she enthusiastically supported a ban on fracking — but a Harris campaign official said in late July that she no longer supports such a ban.
Fracking is the process of using liquid to free natural gas from rock formations – and the primary mode for extracting gas for energy in battleground Pennsylvania. During a September 2019 climate crisis town hall hosted by CNN, she said she would start “with what we can do on Day 1 around public lands.” She walked that back later when she became Biden’s running mate.
Biden has been the most pro-climate president in history, and climate advocates find Harris to be an exciting candidate in her own right. Democrats and climate activists are planning to campaign on the stark contrasts between Harris and Trump , who vowed to push America decisively back to fossil fuels, promising to unwind Biden’s climate and clean energy legacy and pull America out of its global climate commitments.
If elected, one of the biggest climate goals Harris would have to craft early in her administration is how much the US would reduce its climate pollution by 2035 – a requirement of the Paris climate agreement .
Immigration
Harris has quickly started trying to counter Trump’s attacks on her immigration record.
Her campaign released a video in late July citing Harris’ support for increasing the number of Border Patrol agents and Trump’s successful push to scuttle a bipartisan immigration deal that included some of the toughest border security measures in recent memory.
The vice president has changed her position on border control since her 2020 campaign, when she suggested that Democrats needed to “critically examine” the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, after being asked whether she sided with those in the party arguing to abolish the department.
In June of this year, the White House announced a crackdown on asylum claims meant to continue reducing crossings at the US-Mexico border – a policy that Harris’ campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, indicated in late July to CBS News would continue under a Harris administration.
Trump’s attacks stem from Biden having tasked Harris with overseeing diplomatic efforts in Central America in March 2021. While Harris focused on long-term fixes, the Department of Homeland Security remained responsible for overseeing border security.
She has only occasionally talked about her efforts as the situation along the US-Mexico border became a political vulnerability for Biden. But she put her own stamp on the administration’s efforts, engaging the private sector.
Harris pulled together the Partnership for Central America, which has acted as a liaison between companies and the US government. Her team and the partnership are closely coordinating on initiatives that have led to job creation in the region. Harris has also engaged directly with foreign leaders in the region.
Experts credit Harris’ ability to secure private-sector investments as her most visible action in the region to date but have cautioned about the long-term durability of those investments.
Israel-Hamas
The Israel-Hamas war is the most fraught foreign policy issue facing the country and has spurred a multitude of protests around the US since it began in October.
After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in late July, Harris gave a forceful and notable speech about the situation in Gaza.
We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering. And I will not be silent.”
Harris echoed Biden’s repeated comments about the “ironclad support” and “unwavering commitment” to Israel. The country has a right to defend itself, she said, while noting, “how it does so, matters.”
However, the empathy she expressed regarding the Palestinian plight and suffering was far more forceful than what Biden has said on the matter in recent months. Harris mentioned twice the “serious concern” she expressed to Netanyahu about the civilian deaths in Gaza, the humanitarian situation and destruction she called “catastrophic” and “devastating.”
She went on to describe “the images of dead children and desperate hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time.”
Harris emphasized the need to get the Israeli hostages back from Hamas captivity, naming the eight Israeli-American hostages – three of whom have been killed.
But when describing the ceasefire deal in the works, she didn’t highlight the hostage for prisoner exchange or aid to be let into Gaza. Instead, she singled out the fact that the deal stipulates the withdrawal by the Israeli military from populated areas in the first phase before withdrawing “entirely” from Gaza before “a permanent end to the hostilities.”
Harris didn’t preside over Netanyahu’s speech to Congress in late July, instead choosing to stick with a prescheduled trip to a sorority event in Indiana.
Harris is committed to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, having met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at least six times and announcing last month $1.5 billion for energy assistance, humanitarian needs and other aid for the war-torn country.
At the Munich Security Conference earlier this year, Harris said: “I will make clear President Joe Biden and I stand with Ukraine. In partnership with supportive, bipartisan majorities in both houses of the United States Congress, we will work to secure critical weapons and resources that Ukraine so badly needs. And let me be clear: The failure to do so would be a gift to Vladimir Putin.”
More broadly, NATO is central to our approach to global security. For President Biden and me, our sacred commitment to NATO remains ironclad. And I do believe, as I have said before, NATO is the greatest military alliance the world has ever known.”
Police funding
The Harris campaign has also walked back the “defund the police” sentiment that Harris voiced in 2020. What she meant is she supports being “tough and smart on crime,” Mitch Landrieu, national co-chair for the Harris campaign and former mayor of New Orleans, told CNN’s Pamela Brown in late July.
In the midst of nationwide 2020 protests sparked by George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer, Harris voiced support for the “defund the police” movement, which argues for redirecting funds from law enforcement to social services. Throughout that summer, Harris supported the movement and called for demilitarizing police departments.
Democrats largely backed away from calls to defund the police after Republicans attempted to tie the movement to increases in crime during the 2022 midterm elections.

Chit Chat: Drag Race winner Jimbo on how clowns can handle anything, and the 'car crash' that is JoJo Siwa
In a cackle of drag queens, Jimbo stands out.
First introduced on reality show Canada's Drag Race in 2020, Jimbo immediately became a fan favourite for her off-kilter collision of clowning and drag, resulting in wonderfully wacky, hyper-feminine and divisive characters.
Wowing the world, Jimbo (James Isnell) has since returned twice to the gladiator ring of RuPaul's Drag Race, representing Canada on UK vs the World before last year winning All Stars season eight.
Highlights include throwing baloney at RuPaul while dressed in latex as a pregnant ghost named Casper, her equally filthy impressions of Joan Rivers and Shirley Temple, and outfits that can only be described as physics-defying.
Now in Australia touring her Drag Circus — an adults-only "variety-adventure" that incorporates Casper, Shirley, Joan and more — Jimbo sat down with ABC Entertainment to talk about her tour, TikTok habits and the only person odder than her: Nicolas Cage.
What was the last thing that made you laugh online?
It was probably this clip of JoJo Siwa's newest dance that she did, where someone turned down the music and added a lot of stomping, breathing and clapping to make it even more ridiculous.
What do you make of JoJo's movements? To me, it feels like she's kind of approaching a new art form.
Oh my God. You know, I love seeing people out there doing their thing. I think she is just trying really hard.
You can sense when an artist or a performer is coming from an authentic place and point of view. [With JoJo] it all feels a bit staged, it doesn't necessarily feel 100 per cent authentic.
But also, I'm a little obsessed with child stars and people that were raised in stardom. They always end up a bit weird or different because of their circumstance.
She's a product of her whole life being a performer. At the same time, I feel kind of bad for her. I also think she's awesome for being herself and being out there. It's a weird one, like a car crash.
What was the last photo you took with your phone, and can we see it?
This is us [Jimbo and husband Brady Taylor] last night up at the Sydney Eye Tower overlooking Sydney — and before that, this is all of our luggage to come on tour. Twenty-five bags.
Wow. When you're travelling with that much stuff, surely something goes missing occasionally?
Luckily, it hasn't. We only have one of everything, and everything is important because we had to pare down the show to that. Twenty-five bags is just the essentials. We can't lose anything.
It's pretty crazy. If that happens, you're kind of screwed. But luckily, I'm a clown. I can deal with anything, and I'd make it work, if I had to.
I did a show recently over at Fire Island, and halfway through all my make-up just melted off. It was so incredibly hot — it was the hottest I've ever been performing. And I just said, "Well, that concludes the make-up portion of the evening." You know, the show has to go on.
At that point, do you wipe it all off, or do you keep it in its weird, melted form?
I just kept it on . The show was rapid-fire. And I hadn't really done a show like that without support acts. They said we just want you for 45 minutes, and there was no-one else to take over.
I had to just go from one act to the next to the next, and slowly the make-up just degraded, but that became part of it.
The people love seeing realness, especially in a performance. Anything that feels for you, specific to that performance in that night, makes it even more magical. They love that I perform through that, that I'm not like "Stop the show! I don't look proper!"
At the end of the day, I just want to perform and make people laugh. That's what people want as well, so looking funny is part of it.
What was the last screenshot that you took?
This hot dog dress! Because I liked it. I'd like to show up as a hot dog sometime.
What's the last Wikipedia rabbit hole you went down?
It was … [looks through phone] "LGBT culture in Sydney".
Did you learn anything?
I don't even remember reading it! [Laughs]
Was there a horror movie that you watched too young that scarred you forever?
I loved horror movies when I was really young, so I don't think anything scarred me. I'm more scarred by boredom than fear.
I had a little black-and-white TV in my room, and I would stay up late and watch Nightmare on Elm Street, Elvira, Jason. Whenever we watch movies, I tend to want to watch scary movies.
What horror have you seen recently?
We just saw Longlegs . It was really funny, I loved it.
Nicolas Cage makes these really bizarre, funny acting choices. Everyone in the theatre was laughing — I don't know if that was what they were hoping for or what they were expecting, but it's made people quote it on TikTok.
In your own words, what is this tour?
I've been told it's the best drag show people have ever seen!
I come from a theatre and production designer background — I used to make the sets and costumes for all the shows that I produced. I took the background that I have in visual presentation and production design, and I turned it onto my own storytelling.
The element of the circus I love is you really never know what you're gonna get. It's a variety adventure where you [only] know that you're gonna be entertained. It's a theatre show that incorporates drag. You can expect a lot of comedy, I do a lot of improv and stand-up.
People really gravitate towards my [Snatch Game characters] Joan Rivers and Shirley Temple, where you have something that's familiar, but then you add a twist.
Like, Shirley Temple goes from being a tap star to a rap star. And so I have this hip-hop number where my dollies come to life — it's really surreal.
It's Monty Python and Pee-wee's Playhouse on acid. It's [about making] people laugh and go, "What the f*** did I just watch??"
Jimbo's Drag Circus tours Australia this August, with stops in Sydney, Wollongong, Hobart, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth.
