Located some 67 kilometres from Krakow is the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum & Memorial. Auschwitz is a name so connected with terror and suffering due to it being the largest Nazi death camp in World War II with between 1.1 million and 1.5 million people tragically murdered here.

A visit to Auschwitz can easily be included on a short break to Krakow. It is a place that everyone should visit once in their lifetime and in some small way, honour all those lives lost.

Nothing prepares you for the sight of those grim words Arbeit Macht Frei ("Work makes you free") as you make your way silently through these gates trying to imagine how prisoners must have felt years before.

Auschwitz tours are run amazingly well given the huge number of people visiting, allowing just enough time and information in each place for you to gain an insight into the horror, but not to feel completely overwhelmed by grief at the enormity of the suffering.

Each red-bricked building depicts haunting images of people and their personal belongings. Especially poignant are the suitcases upon which the Nazis made the owners write their home addresses, giving them a mocking belief that they would one day return home.

Whilst a visit here is undoubtedly chilling, it is also an important part of the country’s history and a testament to the postwar generation.

Visit Auschwitz on our  Classic Poland Group Tour , an 8 day guided tour encompassing Poland's highlights. We also offer a guided Auschwitz visit, which can be included on any of our Krakow City Breaks . This 6-hour excursion includes coach, transfers, museum entry fee and guide. Private Auschwitz tours can also be arranged which include a guide and driver from Krakow.

The inside story

The Auschwitz-Birkenau complex has left its inglorious mark on human history. A symbol of the Holocaust, during its five years of operation over a million Jews, along with Poles, Romani and other groups, were systematically killed by German Occupiers in WWII. Confronting and emotionally charged, a visit to the complex is an essential part of the human experience.

Composed of two sections, Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, together they convey the magnitude of the compound. Auschwitz I was the main site opened in 1940 with the now infamous sign on its gate Arbeit macht frei (‘Work sets you free’). It held the first camps, the offices of the SS and was where criminal medical experiments and the first gassings using Zyklon B took place. Auschwitz II-Birkenau came later and for all intents and purposes became an extermination camp. The remains of its gas chambers and crematorium, along with primitive barracks, can still be seen.

Since 1947 this site has become a memorial and museum dedicated to the many victims of Auschwitz. Both camps require at least 90 minutes each to gain a comprehensive understanding of the events that took place here. With over two million visitors per year, it’s well advised to book in advance.

Seweryn was a fantastic tour guide and very knowledgeable about Krakow's history. I enjoyed learning about the many historical and religious details we saw around Krakow. He also went above and beyond to help me when I had trouble purchasing train tickets, and when I got sick offered to reschedule one of the tour days. I really enjoyed his tour and would highly recommend it.

Krakow & Auschwitz Tour

Krakow & Auschwitz

Did their Krakow, Poland trip in December during the Christmas markets. Really a great trip and experience. Everything was very organized, had really good hotel near the square/old town (I booked the 3-star hotel, private room option with my husband), guides were very good & knowledgeable and the excursions/tours were very good. We also received a lot of extra information and recommendations for things to do and places to go (food and drink too) in our free time which was really nice and helpful. I was a bit nervous reading a few of the reviews here on Yelp but our experience was fantastic and nothing like what some others wrote in their reviews. Krakow was an amazing city and one of the most beautiful in Europe. Definitely recommend this trip and company.

Kuba was extremely knowledgeable and contributed considerably to our understanding and enjoyment of the spots we saw. He also showed up on our final day with special Polish donuts for us to enjoy -- a thoughtful and very sweet gesture. We recommend Kuba highly!

Highlights of Poland Tour

Highlights of Poland

I was in the May 20-27, 2023 Poland tour. The tour got off to a bad start for me because the promised airport transfer pickup was not anywhere in sight at the Warsaw airport. When I called the help phone numbers provided all I got was Polish speaking messages.I called an Uber. I was later told by another fellow traveler in my group (who was on my same airplane) that while he also was not able to find the transfer person at first, after he walked around for while, he somehow found the transfer driver sitting in his car in a remote area. So he was fortunately able to get his transfer. The tour itself was very fulfilling. Everything promised in the three cities was delivered and it was all very exciting and very interesting. The tour guide worked hard to arrange extra excursions, at the spur of the moment, so everybody had options as to filling in any free time and also to participate as a group. He arranged dinners at night so that the whole group could eat together if they wished. There is a huge amount of walking on this tour. The salt mine tour by itself was 8 miles for just that one tour. I enjoy walking and do so every day, but it was sometimes hard to keep up at 77 years old. Most difficult was walking from hotels to train stations and back with all of our luggage. There were steep stairways that had to be dealt with while carrying all of our luggage. Overall, I’m very glad I did the tour and had a great time with all of my fellow tour participants. I believe all twelve tour participants had a lot of fun together. I do recommend this tour but try to do it before age might become too much of a factor because of all of the fast paced walking.

Overall, the tour was wonderful. A lot was squeezed into the 7 days. There were a few stops we would like to have spent more time at. The evening included meals were average or below average- it would have been nice to have more local cuisine. Breakfast meals were good; the breakfast buffet at the Regent Warsaw Hotel was excellent. Our tour guide Kasia was very knowledgeable & engaging - she did an excellent job! Really enjoyed her commentary & she was so helpful.

Such a fun and alternative trip to take! We went to Prague, Poland, Budapest, and Austria. Even though it was one of the coldest weeks, our tour guide made it beyond enjoyable. She had so many suggestions of places to go and all were great. My favorite stop was Krakow, Poland, what a beautiful city and so much fun. I had an absolute blast while on this trips, the tour guide were energetic, fun, and knowledgeable, the trip was well run and flexible which I enjoyed, the company had optional activities set up for us which was nice to not feel pressured to do them if you wanted to explore on your own. The accommodations were always comfy and clean and the buses we took for all the trips were enjoyable and filled with fun movies to watch. I would highly recommend traveling with Euroadventures, their attention to detail, responsible yet fun guides, and flexible, activities filled schedule are all beyond worth it.

A Virtual Tour of Auschwitz - Poland's Haunted Concentration Camp

W alking through the gates of Auschwitz isn’t just a sobering experience; it’s a journey back in time to one of the darkest chapters in human history. Located in Oswiecim, Poland , Auschwitz-Birkenau stands as the most infamous of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Today, preserved as a museum , this is more than a memorial. It's a constant reminder of the horrors we must never forget. So, in case you don't have the chance to visit this museum yourself, and learn more about it's absolutely horrific history - join us on this virtual journey through Poland's haunted concentration camp.

Entry to Auschwitz I

Our exploration begins at Auschwitz I. This part of the camp is easily recognized by the chilling motto “Arbeit Macht Frei” (Work Sets You Free) arching over its gates. Originally built to house political prisoners, it quickly became the administrative center for the entire camp complex. As you walk past the rows of brick barracks, the stark reality of life here hits you-the isolation cells, the execution wall, and the electrified fences paint a gruesome picture of daily life.

Today, these barracks are converted into exhibition halls that detail the camp’s operation and narrate stories of the inmates. The halls hold personal belongings-luggage, glasses, even children’s shoes-that were seized upon arrival. Perhaps the most haunting exhibit is the massive display of human hair. What a brutal reminder of how camp prisoners were stripped of all humanity. But it wasn't just their hair that was taken from them. Prosthetics, glasses, and even braces - thousands of examples are still in the museum.

Block 11 & Auschwitz II-Birkenau

Block 11, known as the “Death Block,” is where the Nazis carried out brutal punishments and experiments. The standing cells here were particularly torturous-prisoners were crammed into tiny spaces, forced to stand for days. It was also in Block 11 that the initial tests with Zyklon B gas were conducted. This testing set the stage for the mass exterminations that would follow.

Just a short distance away, Auschwitz II-Birkenau was constructed to expedite the Nazis’ Final Solution-the genocide of the Jewish people. The size of Birkenau strikes you as you view the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria, sinisterly destroyed by the Nazis in an attempt to hide their crimes. The endless rows of chimney stacks stand as silent witnesses to the horrific scenes in this construction of torture.

Reflecting at the Memorial

At the end of the railway line into Birkenau, there’s a poignant International Monument to the Victims. Here, people from around the world pay their respects, leaving stones and flowers in memory of those lost. Finally, it's important to remember Auschwitz was just a small part of a systematic attempt by the Nazi regime to exterminate Jews. This genocidal plan also targeted Romani people, disabled individuals, Polish and Soviet civilians, communists, socialists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals.

Exploring Auschwitz isn’t easy, but it's essential. It forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about human capacity for cruelty. It’s a potent reminder of what can happen when hatred goes unchecked. As we walk through these gates, we don’t just learn about history-we vow to make “Never Again” a reality.

I marched at Auschwitz this week. Here's what I say to campus protesters in America.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Elie Wiesel once warned of the “ perils of indifference .” Reflecting on the horrors of the 20th century, he recognized that indifference can be tempting, even seductive. It is easier to look away from victims. It is easier to avoid interrupting comfortable lives. Indifference requires no response. Indifference is not a beginning, he said; it is an end.

I thought about Wiesel’s warning as I joined the annual International March of the Living in Poland on Monday. Since the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel, the world’s commitment to “never again” has been tested like rarely before. Amid a frightening rise in antisemitism on North American college campuses, I led a delegation of American and Canadian university presidents to join the march as a powerful reminder of what can happen when hate is left unchecked.

But the problem on campuses today is different from the one described by Wiesel. If in the past the problem was indifference, today it is indulgence.

University leaders are not indifferent. They care a lot. They care about protecting their students, both pro-Palestinian protesters and pro-Israel students.

But they have created a culture of indulgence. They indulge their students to break their institutions’ rules without consequences. They indulge one group of students at the expense of another who are being intimidated and threatened. And worst of all, they indulge lies without speaking the truth.

University leaders know Hamas is a terrorist organization

In the weeks after Oct. 7, I spoke with school presidents from across the country, and I can tell you that they know the truth. They know that although the politics of the Middle East is complicated, one element is clear: Hamas is a terrorist organization . They know its charter calls for the elimination of the Jewish state and the murder of Jewish people.

University leaders know that Hamas does not seek a two-state solution but the final solution.

Although they know this truth, many fail to say it. This is happening in part because universities have abandoned their core mission. Too many university leaders today see their roles as mere conveners of conversations. In their minds, the pursuit of truth requires them to be fully disengaged. Instead of educators, they have become hosts.

Although all will avow with sincerity that conversation must be limited when it threatens or intimidates other students, even on this score many have failed, preferring instead short-term tactics to placate a loud, protesting mob.

We must hear survivors’ stories. My family escaped death during the Holocaust.

What universities must do is reassert their role as educators.

With Columbia University in the news, a past episode on its campus illustrates this point well. In 2007, Columbia hosted Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad , for a speech before an address he was set to give to the United Nations the next day .

There was a great uproar at the time. Lee Bollinger, the First Amendment scholar who was then Columbia’s president, allowed the event to take place but introduced Ahmadinejad with a scathing attack on the Iranian leader’s repugnant positions. By his actions, Bollinger expressed that the principle of free speech required allowing even the most vile views to be aired, while also demonstrating that such views must be met with a clear moral response from the university.

That is free speech grounded in truth and moral clarity.

Universities need to respond to extremists on campus

This is how universities must respond to extremists today. Extremists obscure language. They seek to muddle, not clarify. By now, does anyone really not understand the implications of the phrases " from the river to the sea " or " globalize the intifada "?

Extremists use terms as dog whistles to their followers with a veneer of defensibility. This kind of muddling requires a clear response from university leadership. The way to reclaim complexity and nuance is by informing the conversation with facts and insisting on moral clarity.

Imagine if the leadership of Columbia today had consistently said, since Oct. 7, that all matters of the Palestinian-Israeli debate are naturally open to conversation. That the way that Israel has prosecuted the war this year should be put to critical analysis and that we must similarly place under the microscope the Palestinian people’s relationship with Hamas.

But one thing all civilized people should agree upon is that Hamas is a terrorist organization and using its language and symbols is morally repugnant, not just to Jews but to all people of conscience.

Bring hostages home: What my daughter understands about Israel-Hamas negotiations that Netanyahu can't

If this was the tone and tenor adopted by university leadership across the country since Oct. 7, fewer campuses would be canceling their commencement ceremonies today.

Now is not the time for universities to indulge.

It is time for them to resume their primary role and educate.

Fence and barbed wire in Birkenau

In order to take in the grounds and exhibitions in a suitable way, visitors should set aside a minimum of about 90 minutes for the Auschwitz site and the same amount of time for Auschwitz II-Birkenau. It is essential to visit both parts of the camp, Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, in order to acquire a proper sense of the place that has become the symbol of the Holocaust as well as Nazi crimes againt Poles, Romas and other groups.

The grounds and most of the buildings at the sites of the Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau sites are open to visitors. Some buildings are not accessible to visitors (including the blocks reserved for the Museum administration and its departments). Please familiarize yourself with " the rules for visiting ".

Remains of wooden barracks at Sector BII. Photo: Paweł Sawicki

Auschwitz I is where the Nazis opened the first Auschwitz camps for men and women, where they carried out the first experiments at using Zyklon B to put people to death, where they murdered the first mass transports of Jews, where they conducted the first criminal experiments on prisoners, where they carried out most of the executions by shooting, where the central jail for prisoners from all over the camp complex was located in Block No. 11, and where the camp commandant's office and most of the SS offices were located. From here, the camp administration directed the further expansion of the camp complex.

Birkenau is where the Nazis erected most of the machinery of mass extermination in which they murdered approximately one million European Jews. At the same time, Birkenau was the largest concentration camp (with nearly 300 primitive barracks, most of them wooden). Over a hundred thousand prisoners were here in 1944: Jews, Poles, Roma, and others. The nearly 200 hectares of grounds include the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria and places filled with human ashes. There are primitive prisoner barracks and kilometers of fences and roads.
