Overview of tourism and economic development

Tourism and employment, employment trends in the tourism industrys, impediments of employment creation in the tourism industry, works cited.

The contribution of different sectors to economic development of states as well as the global economy has been the greatest area of focus for economists. They measure sector contributions basing on both the direct as well as indirect effects of the sectors on the economic growth and development.

One of the notable sectors in modern economies is the tourism sector. This sector is being given a lot of attention to in many countries because of the benefits that are derived from it. Of considerable attention is the role that is played by the sector in bringing about full employment in modern economies.

As pointed out in many research outcomes, tourism is one of the main contributors to employment in economies. More researchers are sure that tourism has contributed to the creation of employment opportunities in economies (Aykac 12).

Tourism has been termed as one of the main leading factors in social, cultural and economic development. One contribution of tourism to economic development is argued to be the creation of jobs in economies. There are a lot of investments in tourism development.

These investments open up job opportunities for populations. Jobs in the tourism sector are created in different ways. There are direct jobs that are created indirectly in sectors that back tourism.

Therefore, any research or analysis of the contribution of tourism to the creation of employment has to be objective in order to capture all the diverse aspects of employment (European Commission 2).

There are a lot of kinds of tourism activities, which create both long-term and short-term employment opportunities. Percentage of job creation differs from one tourist activity to another as well as from one economy to the other.

The international labor organization has termed the tourism and travel industry as one of the most dynamic industries across the globe. Tourism contributed 9 percent to the global gross domestic product in the year 2010.

According to statistics from the ILO, the tourism industry has been attaining growth and expansion at a remarkably quick pace thence creating many economic opportunities in the prevailing globalized economy.

The diversity in the tourism industry resonates from the argument that different tourist activities are being coined hence increasing the job creation capacity of the industry. The more creativity is employed in the tourism industry, the more the number of employment opportunities.

According to the economic surveys that were conducted by ILO, the global tourism industry employs approximately 8 percent of the total employees in all industries in the world. This translates to about 235 million jobs.

This is a significant contribution to economic development bearing in mind that employment creation is one of the mechanisms through which economies are sustained (International Labor Organization 6).

Economic forecasts point out that employment opportunities are expected to be created in the tourism industry in the coming years. The ILO projects that by the year 2019, approximately 60 million jobs will have been created in the industry increasing the employment figures in the industry to 296 million jobs.

This projected outcome can only be achieved when economic factors and forced to remain intact. What is meant here is that the tourism industry is temporary in nature. It is severely affected by economic forces emanating from the global economy. However, the industry remains one of the main sources of employment.

In spite of the global financial pressures that mounted on economies between 2008 and 2009, the global tourism industry managed to have and employment creation increment of one percent. This is a positive indicator of the growing strength of the industry.

This growth is backed by heavy investment in the industry as well as the diversification of functions and activities that make up the industry. For instance, sports tourism has been gaining prominence with a continued creation of sporting facilities and sporting events across economies in the world.

Therefore, it can be argued that the industry is becoming sustainable in terms of creating and maintaining a high number of jobs. As more creativity is applied in the industry, the stability of the industry is slowly becoming a reality.

Therefore, more sustainable jobs are being created in the tourism industry across the globe (International Labor Organization 8).

In the analysis of the employment trends and features of labor in the UK tourism industry, it was noted that the industry provides different categories of employment. The categories of employment in the tourism industry range from temporary to part-time employment and self employment.

Most of the employees that work in the tourism industry are of young age meaning that the tourism industry is acting as a solution to the global crisis of unemployment. The other valuable thing noted is that the tourism industry is quite wide.

The principal sub industries that are found in the larger industry include food and beverage, accommodation, the transport industry which caters for logistic services sports, cultural, conference and recreation activities.

All these industries provide job opportunities. Job opportunities in these sub-industries are dependent on the nature of tourist activity in a given area (Eddie et al. 25).

As mentioned earlier, the tourism industry is delicate in nature and is thus easily swayed by forces emanating from the whole economy or other sectors connected to the economy. The notable example is the recent financial crisis that originated from the United States and Europe.

The crisis has far reaching effects on the tourism industry. It impeded the capacity of the sector to provide employment opportunities in the global economy. The crisis had a negative effect on the potential of the industry to sustain the employees who had secured employment in the industry.

Research shows that a considerable number of employees are laid off as a result of the crush in travel and expenditure by tourists. The crush is caused by inflationary pressures on economies (International Labor Organization 6).

This makes many people view the industry as a provider of temporary employment rather than permanent employment as is desired by many people in economies.

A noteworthy observation has been made which supports the sustainability of employment in the tourism industry. The easing of financial pressures on countries is often accompanied by positive growth prospects in the tourism industry.

People return to their normal expenditure patterns leading to the revitalization of the tourism industry. This is how the industry has managed to recover from the employment mess that was created by the global monetary crunch. With the improvement of the global financial position, the industry has regained its employment trends.

The other notable factor is that the industry operates basing on seasons. Returns and high levels of employment in the industry are attained when tourism activities are at the pick or high season. During this season, more opportunities are created in the industry with more returns on investments.

When there is a shift in season, employees can easily sustain themselves. Also, other investments can be made from the high returns attained hence creating other job opportunities (Aykac 15).

While the developing countries present the best tourist attraction opportunities for travel tourists, the figures of job creation in tourist industries of these countries are still low. Much job opportunities remain furrow in the developing world.

The employment creation figures that are released in the industry could be increased if the developing world exploits the full potential of the industry. This does not mean that nothing is being done to increase earnings from the industry in the developing parts of the world.

The main thing that is needed is the streamlining of investments in the industry in order to derive more employment opportunities from it. If this is done, benefits among them job creation will be derived from the industry hence raising the economic worth of the industry in the entire world.

Among the most vital areas that need to be improved so as to make the industry proactive in creating job opportunities is the improvement of infrastructure. Infrastructural incapacitation has affected the developing world for a long time thus denying countries opportunities of creating jobs in the tourism sector (“Oecd Tourism Trends and Policies” 89).

The diversity of tourism has added to the potentiality of the industry to provide jobs in the global economy. The hotel, food and accommodation sector is highly backed by tourism either locally or internationally. The hotel and accommodation sector, which is the main host of tourists, has been growing at a faster pace.

New hotel and restaurants are built and expanded on a daily basis in tourist zones across the globe. Hotels employ a substantial number of people especially in places where tourism is the main economic activity (Eddie et al. 26).

An in-depth look of sports tourism, which has been growing at a quick pace, shows that sports tourism creates a lot of employment opportunities and income. Research indicates that sports tourism has grown tremendously.

This is backed by the increasing trend of support for sports as has been witnessed in the organization and hosting of mega sporting events. Examples of these sporting events are the Olympic Games, the FIFA World Cup and other regional sporting events.

Sporting destinations benefit a lot by virtue of hosting sporting events. Sporting arenas and clubs employ people who ensure that the sporting facilities are maintained. The hosting of key sporting events creates temporary job opportunities in destinations where the sporting events take place.

Many investments are being channeled to the promotion of sports tourism. This implies that jobs are being created in sports tourism.

The most notable limiting factor in sports tourism in the developing world is the lack of efficient and effective sporting structures. This limits the exploitation of job creation potential of sports tourism (Homafar et al. 35).

The accommodation industry, which is a sub industry in the larger industry, employs millions of people across the globe. Statistics from the European Commission indicates that accommodation sector in the tourism sector of Europe, provides employment to approximately 13 million people.

This figure comprises of people who have been directly and indirectly employed in the sector (European Commission 9). More research is needed in the tourism industry. This research needs to be directed on seeking mechanisms that can be used to increase the potential of the industry to create more jobs.

While there are some criticisms about the impact of tourism on quality of life for local residents, evidence shows tourism normally creates livelihood opportunities and economic growth. Many of the jobs created in the tourism industry do not require high levels of training or education, making the sector especially effective in combatting poverty. Tourism also creates many opportunities for microentrepreneurship and as the barriers to entry for most of these small businesses are low, tourism can provide opportunities for individuals to escape poverty by creating their own employment. Interviews with employees and microentrepreneurs throughout SEA were presented. Employees generally felt the jobs they chose to take were better options than their other livelihood opportunities and did not feel exploited by their employers and many workers had plans for the future. The microentrepreneurs also felt their choice of occupation was their best option, and often the personal freedom and flexibility of owning one’s own business were as important to the entrepreneurs as were the financial rewards. In general, the individuals interviewed shared in the opinion tourism was good for the country as well as for themselves as it provided additional choices of how to make a living. Also, an exploration of the intangible benefits tourists seek and often obtain was made.

Also, because of tourism other industries also bloom. Such industries include transportation, wildlife, arts and entertainment, accommodation, etc.

Moreover, this ultimately leads to the creation of job and other opportunities in the area. But there are some drawbacks too which can affect the lifestyle and cultural value of the country.

Importance of Tourism

Traveling is a tiring and difficult thing and not everyone is able to travel. But at the same time, it’s a fun activity that takes your tiredness away. Travelling adds flavor to life as you travel to different places that have a different culture and lifestyle. Also, it’s an easy way to learn about the culture and tradition of a place. Besides, for many areas, tourism is their main source of income.

In conclusion, we can say that tourism is a very productive activity both for the tourist and the government. As they support each other simultaneously. Also, the government should consider improving the conditions of the country as more and more number of tourist visit their country.

Above all, tourism is one of the fastest-growing industry in the world that has changed the scenario of the world.

The Tourism Ministry provides financial assistance to the states, union territories, and other central agencies to develop tourism in their area and promote the culture and natural beauty of different regions and pilgrimage sites.

Comfortable, safe and affordable hotels for tourists are not only prime locations but other areas also have been set up for the benefit of tourists.

The banner of the ‘Incredible India’ campaign by the Government of India has successfully promoted Indian Tourism among foreigners. The Indian celebrity has also taken part in this campaign to promote Indian Tourism.

The launching of the ‘Clean India’ by the Government provides a clean environment for the national and international tourists which is one of the most essential parts of Tourism.

Tourism originated in the seventeenth century with the purpose of learning and understanding the history, civilization and rich art and cultural heritage of India. Indian international trade was also famous at that time for its huge resources. India has remained an attraction among international tourists since then. With mounting challenges to our societies – conflict, geopolitical tension, climate change and rising inequality – we should look to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their promise of a shared blueprint for peace, prosperity, people and planet by 2030. However, as UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres reminds us , “that promise is in peril” with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic having stalled three decades of steady progress.

Tourism can help deliver a better future, and with less than six years to go, it must unleash its full power to achieve this.

International tourists reached 89% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023. Around 1.3 billion tourists travelled internationally, with total tourism exports of $1.7 trillion, about 96% in real terms of the pre-pandemic value. Preliminary estimates indicate that tourism's direct gross domestic product (GDP) reached $3.3 trillion, the same as 2019, as per our World Tourism Barometer .

Yet, persisting inflation, high interest rates, volatile oil prices and disruptions to trade could impact the pace of recovery. Uncertainty derived from ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas conflict and growing tensions in the Middle East, alongside other mounting geopolitical tensions, may also weigh on traveller confidence.

Results from the World Economic Forum’s latest Travel & Tourism Development Index reflect the impact of some of these challenges on the sector’s recovery and travel and tourism’s potential to address many of the world’s growing environmental, social and economic problems.

Therefore, as the sector returns, it remains our responsibility to ensure that this is a sustainable, inclusive and resilient recovery.

The climate imperative

Climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss are making extreme weather events increasingly challenging for destinations and communities worldwide. The tourism sector is simultaneously highly vulnerable to climate change and a contributor to harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

Accelerating climate action in tourism is critical for the sector’s and host communities’ resilience. We are taking responsibility but more needs to be done to reduce plastics, curb food waste, protect and restore biodiversity, and reduce emissions as the demand for travel grows.

The framework proposed by the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism is catalyzing the development and implementation of climate action plans, guided by and aligned to five pathways (measure, decarbonize, regenerate, collaborate and finance). It’s a clear plan to enable the transition towards low carbon and regenerative tourism operations for resilience. Over 850 signatories from 90 countries are involved in innovating solutions, creating resources and connecting across supply chains, destinations and communities.

Leaving no-one behind

Tourism can be a powerful tool to fight inequality, within and between countries but only so long as we also address diversity, equity and inclusion in the sector, provide decent jobs and ensure respect for host communities and shared benefits.

One good example of tourism’s potential to progress shared prosperity is Rwanda’s Tourism Revenue Sharing Programme . Initiated in 2005 and revised in 2022, it aligns conservation efforts with community development. The programme designates a portion of National Parks revenues to ensure that local communities benefit directly from conservation and tourism activities. Initially set at 5%, the share of total revenue now stands at 10% .

New tools, jobs and values.

Technology, ease of travel and the pandemic have all accelerated changes in how we work. Again, as we progress, we have a duty to ensure we are leaving nobody behind. Education and skills are vital to progressing equality, growth and opportunities for all, making them a cornerstone of the SDGs. However, tourism businesses face a labour shortage to cope with travel demand. We must make tourism more attractive to young people so they see it as a valued career path.

We also need to support micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which make up around 80% of all tourism businesses worldwide and up to 98% in some Group of 20 (G20) economies. While each country’s challenges are different, digitization, market access, marketing and skill gaps are key areas we should address with targeted policies for MSMEs and entrepreneurship.

Measuring impact

Sustainable tourism is only possible if we can properly measure the sector’s impact and progress in three dimensions: economic, social and environmental.

Last March, the UN adopted a new global standard to measure the sustainability of tourism (MST) – economic, social and environmental. Developed under the leadership of UN Tourism and endorsed by all 193 UN member states, the MST statistical framework provides the common language (agreed definitions, tables and indicators) for producing harmonized data on key economic, social and environmental aspects of tourism.

Countries and other stakeholders now have the foundation to produce trustworthy, comparable data for steering the sector towards its full potential. And indeed, over 30 countries and subnational regions have already implemented the flexible MST framework, focusing on the data most relevant to their sustainability efforts.

Centring community wellbeing

Increasingly, communities worldwide demand a tourism sector that respects their identity, rights and wellbeing.

Transforming the sector requires rethinking governance as more holistic with a whole-government approach, multi-level coordination between national and local policies and strong public-private-community partnerships. Listening and engaging residents in tourism planning and management is at the core of the sector’s future.

Take Barcelona as an example. Here, e tourism represents 14% of the city’s GDP. The Tourism and City Council was created in 2016 and relies on citizen participation to advise the municipal government on tourism public policies. This initiative demonstrates the advancement of tourism governance from classic public-private collaboration to public-private-community. Therefore, issues around the visitor economy become those for official city consideration.

Delivering on tourism’s potential

We urgently need to grow investment in tourism. The data is encouraging: the UN Conference on Trade and Development World Investment Report 2023 shows that global foreign direct investment across all sectors, tourism included, reached approximately $1.37 trillion that year, marking a modest increase of 3% from 2022.

At the same time, we need to ensure this investment is targeted where it will make the most significant and most positive impact by building greater resilience and accelerating the shift towards greater sustainability.

The significant benefits tourism can offer our economies and societies, as well as the challenges obstructing us from fully delivering on this potential, are now more widely recognized than ever.

Tourism is firmly on the agenda of the UN, G20 and Group of Seven nations and the Forum. Delivering on this potential, however, will require political commitment and significant investment. But given what is at stake and the potential benefits to be gained, it should be seen as a huge opportunity rather than a daunting challenge.

Four years after pandemic, employment in tourism industry has bounced back to 2019 levels

In the summer of 2020, the tourism industry took a giant blow because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the resulting travel restrictions and some businesses having limited capacity.  

Four years later, as many families, residents and visitors are planning what to do with their time off, businesses in key tourism areas hiring workers are back to pre-2020 job numbers or close to it. 

Tourism generated $23.7 billion in total economic impact in 2022, the most recent year for which data is available from the state Department of Tourism. That total topped the previous record of $22.2 billion set in 2019.

Employment took a little longer to recover, but in April the hospitality and leisure sector employed roughly 282,000 workers statewide, the highest it has been in that month since 2019, according to preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  

In March, roughly 285,800 people worked in hospitality and leisure, matching March 2019.  

In the greater Milwaukee area, employment in hospitality and leisure is up 1% from last year to about 77,100 jobs. It’s still down 2% compared to 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  

Wisconsin Dells tourism economy is 'extremely strong'

Andy Larsen, executive vice president of Boelter and Lincoln Marketing Communications, which works with the Wisconsin Dells, said just under 15,000 people worked in the tourism jobs in the Dells.  

“We certainly expect this year to be every bit as strong as last year was,” Larsen said. “The tourism economy there is extremely strong and does not slow down at all. In fact, it’s picking up as we get further and further away from COVID.” 

Many of the jobs are filled by foreign students here on a J-1 visa, which is given to people who are part of a work-study program.  

In Wisconsin Dells, it’s estimated that roughly 5,000 J-1 visa workers will fill openings, which was roughly where the region was before the pandemic. 

“They’re filling an important role,” Larsen said. “We have jobs available, and the majority of workers in the tourism industry are born-in-the-US citizens, but the J-1 workers really help us fill out all the available jobs.” 

With the advent of indoor waterpark resorts, the city has become more of a year-round destination.  

“The tourism sector in the Dells is continuing to expand,” Larsen said. “And that is due to the businesses themselves.”

Door County seeing similar rebound 

In Door County, about 500 J-1 visa employees will find work at nearly 80 businesses this summer.  

“We do that because we can’t get enough United States students or residents to fill all the jobs that we have,” said Jon Jarosh, chief communications officer for Destination Door County. “It’s a bit like putting a puzzle together for our business owners because different countries have different summer break times, and so businesses in Door County will try to find students from different countries to cover them and their workforce needs.” 

Businesses often fill out paperwork with the Social Security Administration in the fall of the previous year to make sure the workers, and businesses, have the proper documentation.  

“It’s a great program, but there’s a considerable amount of work involved,” Jarosh said. “It’s been a great exchange program. It’s been great to get other cultures over to Door County, and those students are always super eager to work and are really excited to be in the United States and see what it’s really like, not just what they see in the movies.” 

While international workers do help fill positions, there are always openings.  

“Any seasonal destination like Door County or the Dells or anywhere else would say they’re seldom fully staffed, especially post-pandemic,” Jarosh said. “It seems like there’s never enough workers to meet our seasonal workforce needs, especially with the number of visitors that we get every year."

Kentucky tourism breaks economic impact record for second year in a row

79.3 million travelers visited Kentucky in 2023.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WBKO) - The Kentucky tourism industry generated more revenue and jobs in 2023 than ever before, beating the record-breaking numbers set in 2022.

In 2023, Kentucky tourism generated $13.8 billion in economic impact and over 95,000 jobs, according to the Office of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

According to a study by Tourism Economics, 79.3 million travelers visited Kentucky in 2023, a 4.5% increase from 2022. Those travelers spent a total of $9.7 billion across the state.

“Our economy and our tourism industry are booming. More and more people want to visit Kentucky for our world-class destinations and events – creating more experiences for their families while generating jobs for Kentuckians,” said Governor Beshear. “Kentucky is on the biggest tourism and economic roll of our lifetime, and this is a direct result of Team Kentucky’s hard work and investments in building a thriving, welcoming tourism industry. Together, we will continue to expand this success and welcome visitors to experience the natural beauty and warm hospitality of our new Kentucky home.”

Governor Beshear’s announcement of 2023 being the best year on record for tourism follows a record-breaking 2022, when tourism had generated more than $12.9 billion in economic impact and created over 91,000 jobs in Kentucky that year.

TRENTON, NJ – After reviewing submissions from almost 200 New Jersey high school seniors, the New Jersey Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission announces the 10 winners of ‘Looking Back at Dr. King’s 1964 Nobel Peace Prize speech’ 2024 Scholarship Essay Contest:

“The 2024 essay contest winners shared insightful comments about the significance of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Dr. King as reflected in his remarkable speech,” said New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, who oversees the MLK Jr. Commission in her capacity as Secretary of State. “I applaud these young people for their commitment to community service and furthering the legacy of Dr. King through both their words and their actions.” A virtual awards ceremony was held on the evening of May 29 to announce the 2024 MLK Scholars who come from across the state. NORTH KOREA: The People’s Paradise, by Tariq Zaidi

A woman pokes her head out from a hidden room at the Kumgangsan Hotel — a place known for hosting reunions between families from North and South Korea — disrupting the sweeping autumnal landscape painted on the wall.

The image, reproduced by Tariq Zaidi in NORTH KOREA: The People’s Paradise (Kehrer Verlag, 176 pp., $50), offers a metaphor for a country shrouded in secrecy. North Korea’s daily existence has been largely shielded from Western eyes; the state has halted nearly all tourism since it closed its borders early in the Covid-19 pandemic. Those who are granted entry are subject to extreme surveillance.

Zaidi, a self-taught photographer whose previous collection intimately documented the influence of gangs on life in El Salvador, was allowed rare access into North Korea under rigid conditions that included inflexible itineraries, final photo approval and the constant presence of state chaperones. Nevertheless, his images still manage to capture small, revelatory glimpses of daily life: a female traffic warden fiercely surveying the streets of Pyongyang in a crisp white uniform; a young girl perched at a weathered piano, studying crinkled pages of sheet music; several men casually sharing a picnic lunch on a rocky riverbank.

Throughout, Zaidi captures the omnipresence of the North Korean state. Order, discipline and juche — the state’s ideology of self-reliance — are emphasized in vibrant murals. The figures of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, the grandfather and father of the country’s supreme leader, Kim Jong-un, loom over classrooms, train cars and public squares, where the pavement is marked with foot placements to ensure perfect formation during processions.

  • Kentucky Tourism Industry Achieves Historic Success With Record Year for 2023 in Economic Impact

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 30, 2024) – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that 2023 marked a new record year for Kentucky tourism, with $13.8 billion generated in economic impact and 95,222 jobs, as tourism remains a key piece of the commonwealth’s booming economy. The Governor joined state tourism leaders at Castle & Key Distillery to celebrate the second straight record-breaking year for tourism in Kentucky.

“Our economy and our tourism industry are booming. More and more people want to visit Kentucky for our world-class destinations and events – creating more experiences for their families while generating jobs for Kentuckians,” said Gov. Beshear. “Kentucky is on the biggest tourism and economic roll of our lifetime, and this is a direct result of Team Kentucky’s hard work and investments in building a thriving, welcoming tourism industry. Together, we will continue to expand this success and welcome visitors to experience the natural beauty and warm hospitality of our new Kentucky home.”

According to a study by Tourism Economics, 79.3 million travelers visited Kentucky in 2023, a 4.5% increase from 2022. Those travelers spent a total of $9.7 billion across the state. The breakdown of spending is as follows:

  • $2.54 billion on food and beverage,
  • $2.28 billion on lodging,
  • $1.86 billion on transportation,
  • $1.82 billion on retail, and
  • $1.26 billion on recreation and entertainment.

“Tourism in Kentucky is thriving thanks to the leadership of Gov. Beshear, the hard work of our communities, large and small, and the world-class destinations that welcome visitors to the commonwealth,” said Tourism, Arts & Heritage Cabinet Secretary Lindy Casebier. “Today’s numbers emphasize the importance of tourism to Kentucky’s economy and the impact created by all of our local partners. Tourism is economic development that creates jobs, investment and transformative experiences while improving quality of life for all Kentuckians.”

“We are thrilled to break another economic impact record, thanks to this administration’s investments and the hard work of our staff and tourism partners,” said Tourism Commissioner Mike Mangeot. “The effect tourism has on our communities across the state is significant and essential. With no plans to slow down, we look forward to building on this success and are excited to support the tourism initiatives launching this year.”

President and CEO of the Kentucky Travel Industry Association (KTIA) Hank Phillips commends Team Kentucky and tourism partners for continuing to invest in Kentucky’s tourism industry: “From Gov. Beshear’s leadership to support from the General Assembly and the great work of the Tourism, Arts & Heritage Cabinet and Department of Tourism, everyone deserves enormous credit for Team Kentucky’s tourism success. At the core of this success are the multitude of tourism businesses and organizations that do the heavy lifting that has elevated the commonwealth to premier status as a travel destination and tourism to being a driver of Kentucky’s economy.”

Castle & Key Distillery, a revitalized, historic destination in Frankfort, has experienced a steady increase in visitors over the years. In 2015, following the recommendation of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, Castle & Key Distillery received final approval from the Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority for incentives totaling nearly $1.7 million for its tourism development project. The distillery offers a range of tourist experiences, including tours, tastings, shopping and special events. Head Blender Brett Connors attributes Kentucky’s strong tourism industry to the growing number of visitors, a testament to the positive impact of tourism on local businesses.

“The unprecedented growth we have witnessed in Kentucky tourism has resonated throughout the Bourbon trail. This has enlivened distillers to offer more unique experiences than ever before while expanding our hiring across all departments,” said Connors. “Tourism is truly the best marketing opportunity for a brand to build impactful consumer relationships.”

The Governor’s announcement of 2023 being the best year on record for tourism follows a record-breaking 2022, when he announced that tourism had generated more than $12.9 billion in economic impact and created 91,668 jobs in Kentucky that year.
