Broods are an alternative indie, electro-pop duo originating from Nelson NZ. They produce emotion-provoking records which are difficult to forget.

Georgia Nott is the predominant vocalist whilst her older brother and multi-instrumentalist Caleb Nott is on production. As teenagers, the siblings were recognized for their musical talents; in 2011, they were part of the band The Peasants who won the Smokefreerockquest music competition. After the band split in 2012, the Notts formed Broods in early 2013 and worked with the renowned producer Joel Little, before releasing their debut record ‘Bridges’ - described by MTV as “a bittersweet synth-pop echo chamber” - for digital download. Their initial single gained widespread recognition from the likes of Idolator and various other music blogs, and gained over 200K plays in its opening week. It charted at number eight in the Official New Zealand Music Chart and was selected as the US iTunes single of the week for February 2014.

Broods released the single ‘Never Gonna Change’ before the highly anticipated EP ‘Broods’ was available in January 2014 on Polydor in the UK and Europe, along with Capitol Records worldwide. The talented duo enjoyed a wealth of success in a relatively short period of time, and performed for the first time in the USA at Bardot, Hollywood and the UK at Notting Hill Arts Club, London, following the release of their E.P, before releasing their debut album ‘Evergreen’ in August 2014. It topped the New Zealand Albums Chart and prompted a nomination for the Breakthrough Artist of the Year, the People’s Choice Award and the Single of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards 2014.

Broods have been compared to Halsey, Chvrches and Wet, and engaged with large crowds at prestigious settings such as Latitude Festival and ACL Music festival. The Kiwi duo have gained over 1.8 million views on their flagship video ‘Bridges’ on YouTube, whilst also gaining over 39,000 followers on Soundcloud. To put it simply, it’s no surprise when - like a match made in heaven - they produce such scintillating melodies that really do capture the imagination.

Live reviews

I've have been keeping up with this fairly new band since I first heard their single "Bridges," on one of my Pandora stations, a few months ago. I was instantly hooked.

Broods definitely know how to put on a show. I just wish it never ended! They played their whole album, Evergreen, as well as their self titled EP (5 songs). So of course I expected the show to go on for a total of about an hour. That was clearly more than enough time to win the crowd over and that's exactly what they did.

Georgia & Caleb have so much energy and so much love for performing and they really left it all out on the stage last night. Her voice is even more magnificent live and the way he plays is so perfect! Georgia is a great character, she was dancing, laughing and she's so sincere. It's one of the things I loved most about the show. Caleb was also being silly & showing his charming side.

I feel like no word would give the way Broods perform justice but it was simply amazing. You'll fall in love!

I absolutely fell in love with the broods when they opened for Ellie Goulding. Ever since I have simply loved all there music. The concert was beautiful, with the crowd of many strangers uniting to put our hands in the air and scream at the top of our lungs along with Georgia. At the concert I meet some amazing people with crazy stories and it felt like we had know each other for ages. We still all stay up late comparing pictures of the night on Facebook, laughing and being silly. Even them staying to sign merchandise after the show felt exiting and exillerating as we all waited in line for the people that sing our favorite songs. The songs I walk to school listening to, fall alseep listening to each day, created such a sense of warmth in my heart. It was such a fun, amazing, incredible, insperational, beautiful, wonderful night. That has made me love there music even more evrytime I hear it. Thanks BROODS!

The show was fantastic! Very refreshing in the stage set up and costuming. They played so well and she is such a great singer, her voice is amazing! The entire audience had a great time but at the end, we were all confused that the show was over! They didn't say "good night" or "thanks Toronto" or any type of closing remark. We all stood there as the lights came on and wondered what the heck? Stage hands come on and started taking things apart so we all eventually figured out that the show wasn't going to continue. Anyways, other than that confusion, we had a great time. OH, I was happy to see they sold a select amount of autographed tote bags... we got one of those. That was cool.

BROODS is an incredible band to see live! I've seen them five times and each time just keeps getting better and better. On the Don't Feed The Pop Monster Tour, they played all of their latest hits plus many of their previous jams.

Georgia is so full of energy and is a joy to watch on stage while she is dancing and singing enthusiastically. They are definite crowd pleasers and they know how to put on a fun show!

At one point, a woman jumped over the barricade and fell down on the floor. She then proceeded to attempt to climb onto the stage, but failed. Then she was escorted back to the crowd. It was the craziest thing I've seen at a concert in a while!

This is my third time seeing Broods and they never disappoint! As always, fun & playful with beautiful honesty and emotional performances. Great show! I absolutely LOVED to get to see Caleb & Georgia perform "Too Proud" with Caleb on lead vocals. Meaningful and a privilege to be a part of their first sold out concert on this tour! Thank you Broods for another moving experience! The venue was gorgeous and intimate. Fifth Arrow, restaurant downstairs fantastic!!!

Broods is on of those bands that sound great on the album but WAY better live.

The concert was amazing. They performed almost all their new songs as well as the old fan favorites.

Georgia's confidence and happiness when on stage is very contagious as well as Caleb's enthusiasm even he staying at the back pretty much the whole time.

This is a must go concert if you appreciate good alternative music and excellent live performances.

100% Recommended.

Great performance quality. Georgia is a great entertainer. However, was kind of bummed by the set list. They didn’t play their major hits from their previous albums and the ones they did choose were somewhat odd. Mainly their new album (which wasn’t my favorite album, personally). Not bangers for a concert. Set list also seemed short considering they have so many good songs on all 3 albums. Only one encore song too which was disappointing.

Georgia and Caleb and the rest of the band played their best, but the sound was awful. The bass distortion was way overbearing and masked all other sounds. What we heard was just plain noise. We were standing off center to the right of the stage about 1/2 of the way back. We could hear very little to none of Georgia's voice even though she was singing her heart out.

Same results when we walked around the venue.

Broods was amazing live! The opener was good and it was a good build up for the main show. Georgia killed it on vocals. There was a good mix of songs, some slow, some fast. They also did an acoustic session in the middle, and that was really interesting to see. The lights were great, she had a great stage performance and danced along to the music. Overall it was a great experience, I love them more than I did before.

They were really incredible and you could see the energy and connection between all the members of each band and it's so nice to see that. Georgia (girl singers) had an absolutely beautiful voice and amazing stage energy and a good amount of interaction with the crowd. The venue was really stunning and had a great vibe. I would absolutely come to another show if they were to go on tour again.

BROODS announce Australian tour and new album, share 'Heartbreak'

A 2021 press shot of BROODS

  • X (formerly Twitter)

BROODS will be back on our shores in 2022 to celebrate the release of their fourth album, Space Island.

In September, the New Zealand siblings shared a new song, 'Piece of My Mind' . Today, they're back with another, 'Heartbreak' (more on that after the dates), and all the details about Space Island (out 18 February) and an Australian tour.

Update: The tour has been rescheduled to April, view the new dates below. Tickets are available now and refunds for those that can't make the new shows. More info at Live Nation AU .

BROODS Space Island Australian Tour 2022

  • Tues 26 April - Metro: Gadigal Land, Sydney, NSW (previously Fri 25 March)
  • Wed 27 April – Triffid: Meanjin, Brisbane, QLD (previously Wed 23 March)
  • Thurs 28 April – 170 Russell: Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung, Melbourne, VIC (previously Thurs 31 March)

'Heartbreak' is a loungier track, leaving plenty of room for Georgia Nott's voice to soar across a serpentine groove and airy synths. It's a deeply personal song, too.

"We wrote this from a place of determination," George explains. "Determined to learn from the loss of my marriage and keep my heart open in its most tender state." Wed at age 21, she went through a tough divorce shortly after BROODS reclaimed their musical independence  on their previous album  Don’t Feed The Pop Monster.

The track's animated video is billed as Space Island Chapter 2 , following on from the retro sci-fi flavoured Chapter 1 video for 'Piece of Mind'.

"When I say, ‘Let your heart break’, I’m whispering to myself to stay present with the grief and transmute it into empathy. It was a mantra for me when I first separated from my husband."

Both Georgia and Caleb Nott are looking forward to inviting fans into a sonic world two years in the making.

" Space Island is the place we went to do deal with our own losses and heartbreaks, but in a fantasy way that is playful," Georgia recently told triple j. "Because writing a whole album about grief, you need to balance it out..."

Broods

Friday 28 April 2023

After delays, cancellations, and well, everything that 2020-2022 brought with it, BROODS have announced the long-awaited rescheduled Space Island album tour. Opening for Broods will be none other than Rita Mae .

The 10-time New Zealand Music Award -winning act, who have amassed over a billion streams to date, collaborated with Lorde and Tove Lo, toured with HAIM and Taylor Swift and performed at major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza will take to the stage in Auckland.

The fourth full-length album from BROODS , Space Island , is an exploration of grief and all its many dimensions. In keeping with the New Zealand-bred duo’s unfettered imagination—an element they’ve brought to multiple platinum- and gold-certified records so far—the album’s 10 tracks exist in a surprisingly radiant sonic realm, its aesthetic equally inspired by ’60s sci-fi B-movies and the balmy exotica of composers like Les Baxter .

Broods' 'Space Island' New Zealand Tour 2023

New Zealand brother-sister duo Broods are coming back to where it all began for a nationwide tour around Aotearoa in 2023.

After two years of tour cancellations and postponements, the 10-time NZ Music Award-winning act will be embarking on their nationwide Space Island album tour in April, hitting Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington across three dates.

Since their first tour in 2014, the pair have collaborated with Lorde, HAIM and Taylor Swift and performed at major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza — as well as amassing over a billion streams.

Kiwi audiences will get to see bangers from their latest album like 'Piece Of My Mind,' 'Heartbreak' and 'I Keep' — that last one features US pop artist Tove Lo. But hopefully some of their original tracks will get some air time — it would be a Broods show without belting along to 'Bridges', after all.

The tour kicks off on Saturday, April 22 at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre in Christchurch, before travelling upwards to Auckland's Powerstaion Friday, April 28. Their final show will be at Wellington's Hunter Lounge on Saturday April 29. Head to Eventfinda for tour details and to nab tickets.

Cicadas broods map: Why are there so many cicadas in Illinois?

Cicadas have begun to emerge and serenade Illinois and other parts of the Midwest with their distinctive trilling.

The sheer volume of cicadas and their constant sound have led to an endless stream of questions about the insects.

Why are there so many cicadas?

There are so many cicadas because there is safety in numbers. The University of Purdue provided a list of the cicada’s natural predators that read something like the Tasmanian Devil’s prey list. The cicada invasion is a bounty for cicada killer hornets, birds, raccoons, bears, fish, coyotes, dogs, cats and even the occasional human. Ecologist Deborah Landau wrote cicadas are synchronized to emerge in vast numbers in the same time window to ensure enough will survive natural attrition to mate and produce the next swarm. The emergence of two broods in Illinois at the same time suggests cicadas are set to come out billions strong.

Cicadas broods map shows where cicadas will emerge

The U.S. Forest Service predicted an emergence of Brood XIII cicadas, a 17-year occurrence, in northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, northwestern Indiana, southwestern Michigan and eastern Iowa. At the same time, 13-year Brood XIX cicadas are emerging in central Illinois and much of Missouri. Parts of central Illinois may see an overlap of the two broods. The Forest Service provided a map that shows one swath of western Illinois, starting just west of Peoria and running to the Iowa border, is not expected to see or hear any cicada activity.

Cicadas 2024: How to protect trees from cicadas

Where do cicadas come from?

Underground. According to Georgetown University biology professor, periodical cicadas spend 99% of their lives underground. They emerge for a few weeks every 13 or 17 to molt into adults, mate, lay eggs and die.

In a recent article for The Nature Conservancy, Landau wrote that a soil temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit at a depth of 12-18 inches triggers a cicada emergence.

Facts about cicadas life cycle: How long do cicadas stay around?

When are the cicadas leaving?

Sources vary on this question, but the general timeline is between a month and six weeks. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History projected the emergence would last between three weeks and a month. According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, an adult periodical cicada’s life span is one month, and the University of Purdue predicted they would be gone in a month-and-a-half. In any event, the cicadas should be gone by mid-to-late June.

Facts about cicadas: What animals eat cicadas?

Why do cicadas die?

Cicadas die because their goal is complete after they emerge from the soil, mate, and lay eggs. According to the National Wildlife Federation, periodical cicadas only need to live long enough to procreate the next emergence.

This article originally appeared on Journal Star: Cicadas map 2024: Why are there so many cicadas in Illinois?

Buzzing back: Two broods of cicadas emerge simultaneously for first time in 221 years

  • Author By John Twork
  • May 22, 2024

Close-up view of a cicada

A symphony of cicadas with distinct red eyes and orange-veined wings will soon reverberate across Central Illinois, the likes of which hasn’t been heard here in 221 years.

For the first time since 1803, two broods of cicadas are emerging simultaneously near Illinois State University’s campus: the 13-year cycle Great Southern Brood and the 17-year cycle Northern Illinois Brood.

“We just happen to be in the right location in time and space where two broods are coming out, and we are on the border between the two broods,” said Dr. Scott Sakaluk, a Distinguished Professor emeritus in Illinois State’s School of Biological Sciences. “It’s a very unusual event.”

Periodic cicadas, such as those in the Great Southern and Northern Illinois broods, spend most of their lives underground in larval form. Billions of the bugs emerge as adults when the soil reaches 64 degrees, and they live for just a few weeks—long enough to mate and lay eggs.

“It’s really a marvel of engineering that something that small can produce a sound that loud.” Dr. Scott Sakaluk

“The males come out, and they sing,” Sakaluk said. “They prefer to aggregate in assemblages with lots of other males in trees, which acts as a huge acoustic beacon and draws females from all over the place to mate.”

For small insects, cicadas create a lot of noise. The males have discs in their thorax called tymbals that pull in and pop out rapidly to produce sound. Their hollow abdomen acts as a resonance chamber to amplify their unmistakable songs.

“It’s really a marvel of engineering that something that small can produce a sound that loud,” Sakaluk said.

After mating, the females pierce branches or twigs to lay clusters of eggs—between 600 and 1,000. This process can occasionally damage young trees or bushes, which is why some orchards refrain from planting new trees during years when periodic cicadas emerge. Netting can also be used to create a barrier.

When the cicada eggs hatch, cicada larvae burrow into the ground where they’ll live for the next 13 or 17 years, depending on the species. Sakaluk said it’s widely believed by researchers that the periodic cicadas’ lengthy underground lifespan is an antipredator adaptation.

Two cicadas

“They’re, in a temporal way, escaping their predators,” Sakaluk said. “Then, they emerge in these unbelievable numbers.”

At their peak of emergence, there can be between 300 to 600 adult cicadas per square meter, according to Sakaluk.

“That’s ridiculous!” Sakaluk said. “What they’re doing is vastly outstripping the ability of the local predator populations to make a dent in their population. The name of the game is to persist, and one way to do that is to over-satiate your potential predators. It’s incredible.”

Sakaluk expects a cicada symphony in Central Illinois from mid-to-late May through mid-June. During that time, he said they provide a “bonanza of protein” for birds, lizards, and mammals.

“They’re like little packets of protein,” Sakaluk said. “They’re non-toxic and they don’t bite, so they’re kind of defenseless and an opportunity for easy food.”

As a member of Illinois State’s house wren research group , Sakaluk is hopeful that racoons who often climb into nests to eat baby birds will instead gorge on the ample supply of cicadas.

“We get a lot of raccoon predation,” Sakaluk said. “I’m curious to see what happens.”

Once the billions of adult cicadas die out by the end of June, Sakaluk said their decomposing carcasses will add a welcomed boost of nitrogen to the soil.

And the tree canopies will become noticeably quieter.

Sakaluk said he is excited for the cicadas to emerge in a “wonder of the natural world” that won’t be seen, or heard, again until 2245.

“It’s such an unusual phenomenon,” he said.

Cicada concert on the Quad

Sensory walks, a campfire feast and learning sessions with scientists are just some of the ways illinoisans and out-of-towners alike can celebrate the historic double emergence of the 13-year and 17-year cicadas..

For the first time since 1803, the two breeding groups of cicadas that each emerge every 13 or 17 years will coincide, covering more than a dozen states.

And Illinois is the place to be for the historic emergence . The 17-year cicadas will mainly cover the northern half of the state while the 13-year cicadas are centered mostly in the southern part, and the two are set to converge near Springfield.

Whether you’re looking for a place to see them in their natural element, an insect-inspired feast or a special exhibit, there’s plenty of options for celebrating the cicadas’ historic double emergence in Illinois.

Cicada events in and around Chicago

Table Top Tours at Morton Arboretum: Every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon through May 29, education program guides will give talks and lead demonstrations about the 17-year cicadas. Table Top Tours are included with general admission and do not require an additional ticket.

Odd will lead a wildlife flora and fauna safari and afterward he’ll host a nighttime campfire dinner, which will include cicadas.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

the broods tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

the broods tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

the broods tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

the broods tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

the broods tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

the broods tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

the broods tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
