Star Trek: The Original Series episode guides - All TOS episodes rated, reviewed
In those days before the Federation had continuity, there was Star Trek: The Original Series. Watch the TOS stories in any other you wish; it rarely matters, as essentially every single episode in TOS is a bottle episode. Ultimately, however, many TOS episodes are retconned into prequel stories (e.g. “The Menagerie”, “Space Seed”, “City on the Edge of Forever”), sequels (e.g. “Mirror Mirror”) or even crossovers (“The Trouble with Tribbles”) for the other series and movies.
Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 2 episode guide
Star Trek: The Original Series – the seaons, the key episodes
Season 1 – In the 1960s, TV was a different beast. Serialization (and thus continuity) was essentially non-existent. Each story plays out over a single episode only (with one exception in three years of Star Trek), thereby not allowing for much character development each season of Star Trek’s original run is really barely indistinguishable from another – but at lest that means that season 1 isn’t filled with the “growing pains” every other ST series goes through. The biggest highlights in Star Trek’s first year has got to be “The Menagerie” (episode #s 11 and 12), an eerie story of Captain Kirk’s doomed mentor Captain Pike, and “City on the Edge of Forever” (#29), a neat twist on the traditional “preserve the past” time travel tale. Also of note: “Space Seed” (#22), the introduction of Star Trek II baddie Khan.
Season 2 – Ensign Chekov joins the bridge crew for season 2, which manages to have some fun in the explicitly comic “Trouble with Tribbles” (#15) and the absolutely bananas “Assignment: Earth” (#26). And Spock fans dig on “Amok Time” (#1) and Journey to Babel (#10) for the info doled on that wacky Vulcan culture.
Season 3 – As mentioned above, a fan campaign saved Star Trek for a third series, but NBC executives were not enthused about supporting the marginally successful series and cut the show’s operating budget in half. However, Star Trek Guide must say that tripling the budget could not save scripts like those for “Spock’s Brain” (Can all Vulcans live without a brain or just Spock?), “Specter of the Gun” (Scotty’s dead because he *thinks* he’s dead?) and “The Savage Curtain” (Kirk, Spock, Vulcan hero Surak and Abe Lincoln vs. Genghis Khan, Klingon Empire founder Kahless, 21st-century Earth dictator Mr. Green – who did it in the kitchen with a revolver – and fuzzy chick Zora?) Dude.

Star Trek: The Original Series is a series of novels written by various authors and based on the science fiction genre. The novels of the series are adapted from the popular television series and movies of the same name that were telecast between the year 1966 and 1969. The original movies based on The Original Series television series were created and produced by Gene Roddenberry. The plots of the novels of the series are set on the starship named USS Enterprise, which is controlled by Captain James T. Kirk. Captain Kirk is assisted by his first officer named Spock. At the start of every mission on the USS Enterprise, Captain Kirk would utter the same message to his crew in order to make them aware of the mission as well as prepare them for the upcoming ups and downs in the mission. The missions of the USS Enterprise would normally be long voyages for exploring new and strange worlds and seek out new civilizations in the space.
Captain Kirk and his crew would always remain in search of a new life on their missions and go to places where no one else have ever gone to. The novels of The Original Series have been published by many publication houses, but the one published by the Pocket Books or the Titan Books in U.K is very popular. The Star Trek: The Original Series was started in the year 1979 when the first novel of the series was published by the Pocket Books. Since then, many authors have contributed to the series and have helped the series to be ongoing. The main character of The Original Series, Captain James T. Kirk is described by the authors of the respective novels as the youngest captain in the history of the Starfleet, taking command at the age of 34. HE goes on to exploit a career that lasts for more than 40 years. There are many tales that the authors have shared in the novels about the voyages of Captain Kirk, most of them being true in many senses. He was also the first captain who had brought his starship in a good condition after a 5 year mission. Kirk’s success as a captain can never be questioned by anyone as she has become an independent voyager.
Kirk was also involved in many violations of the rule of the USS Enterprise and has to his name a record 17 temporal violation. The ancestors of James Kirk have also served in various starships of the USS Enterprise and hence he has deep roots in the service of the USS Enterprise. He had an elder brother named George Samuel Kirk, who died along with his wife Aurelan in 2267 in Deneva. They are survived by a son named Peter, who is looked after by James Kirk. At the age of 13, James Kirk witnessed the massacre of around 4,000 people by the governor of Tarsus IV, during a famine. Even though he was a romantic person, he never indulged himself in long-lasting romantic relationships because he was devoted more towards his career. He had a short term relationship with Dr. Carol Marcus and had a son with from her named David. James eventually could not do the upbringing of David because of his service and so he did not know that his son had grown into a scientific genius, but was later killed. Kirk grieved the death of his son for a long time. He also had a relationship with a woman named Antonia for 2 years and regretted not being able to marry her.
James was helped in gaining entry into the Starfleet Academy by one of his family friends. Soon, he was able to earn starship duty as a fresh cadet. At one point in his career, James became an instructor for the fresh cadets and made friendships with them, who later saved his life on many occasions. He considers Captain Garth and Abraham Lincoln as his heroes. Because oh his dedication towards his duties, James was able to achieve the rare feat of beating Kobayashi Maru scenario, which was otherwise unbeatable. Actually, he had reprogrammed the system which allowed him to win in the scenario. James Kirk received his first mission after graduation on the USS Farragut as a new lieutenant. By the year 2267, Kirk had risen rapidly to the rank of the captain and had the opportunity to command a respectful and loyal crew of 430 members. During his successful career, he received many commendations and awards. On one of his missions, Kirk had accepted the offer of becoming the admiral in charge of the fleet operations, which he turned down later after regaining his command over the USS Enterprise in the year 2271. Just before his retirement from the Starfleet in the year 2293, James Kirk helped to maintain the peace in the galaxy by exposing a conspiracy from terrorists. He always involved in peace negotiations heavily with the Klingons.
One of the initial novels of The Original Series was published in the year 1981 by the Pocket Books. The novel was titled ‘The Entropy Effect’ and was written by the author Vonda N. McIntyre. The plot of the novel opens up with a mission in which the Starship Enterprise in order to transport Dr. Georges Mordreaux, who is a dangerous criminal and is being taken to rehabilitation. He is also one of the brilliant physicists by profession. He was taken under custody because of doing experiments on people by luring them to send back in time, but rather killing them. During the course of the transportation, Dr. Mordreaux manages to escape and bursts onto the bridge. He kills Captain Kirk in front of all the crew members of the starship. Kirk first officer named Spock decides to go back in time and stop Dr. Mordreaux from killing Captain Kirk. However, there is a great risk in doing so. Spock realizes that the experiments of Dr. Mordreaux have created a lot of chaos in the universe an he keeps fighting in order to bring peace back in the universe.
The other novel of the series was published in the year 1981 by the Pocket Books under the title ‘The Klingon Gambit’. The plot of this novel shows the Kingons trying to target the Enterprise and fight against its crew members. Captain Kirk gets the order to challenge the Klingon starship Terror, but he and his crew are unaware of the deadly effects of Terror. Other than fighting the Klingons, Captain Kirk is also on a mission to find an ancient city on the Alnath II mission. The Klingon does not let go their intention of destroying the Enterprise. Feeling stuck in the battle against the deadly Terror, Captain Kirk and his crew begin to lose their minds and do not know what to do. Slowly, they begin to become the targets of the Klingon gambit.

Starships in TOS and TOS Remastered
by Jörg Hillebrand , Anthony Pascale and Bernd Schneider, with comments from Mike Okuda and Max Gabl
USS Enterprise Other Constitution Class Shuttles Re-Used Starships Unique Starships "Light Ships" New in TOS-R
Thanks to CGI, these shortcomings were eventually corrected in the remastered version of Star Trek (TOS-R), produced by CBS Digital from 2006 to 2008. In TOS-R most of the starships, stations, shuttles and probes have have been given a distinct design. Nearly all of them were recreated digitally from scratch. With some exceptions, notably the Enterprise and her shuttles, many were altered compared to the TOS look.
Our article shows all starships and other spacecrafts and stations that appeared in TOS, and how these were redone for TOS Remastered. They are usually listed chronologically, in the order of their appearance in TOS. Our screen caps depict corresponding shots of TOS and TOS-R where possible. All headings and other classifications refer to the original versions of the vessels.
USS Enterprise
Matt Jefferies's original USS Enterprise NCC-1701 is naturally visible in every TOS episode. The big 11-ft model used for the principal filming was slightly modified between the "The Cage", the first pilot episode, and "Where No Man Has Gone Before", the second pilot, although no differences are discernible on screen. The model was modified much more extensively prior to the filming of the regular episodes. However, due to the use of stock footage the pilot version still occasionally showed up in regular episodes, although it would have been physically impossible. In TOS: "Mirror, Mirror", on the other hand, the pilot version of the miniature was used for the Mirror Enterprise to establish more of a visual difference to "our" Enterprise.
Pilot version
This is the model as it appeared in the first pilot "The Cage", in TOS: "The Menagerie" (the regular episode that recounted "The Cage" and hence re-used the footage of the pilot) and in TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before". The most notable differences to the better known series Enterprise are the tall bridge dome, the black markings near the upper saucer edge, the larger deflector dish, the spires in the still dark Bussard collectors and the perforated plate instead of the later ball on the nacelle aft ends.
Series version
Prior to the first regular episodes the Enterprise model was more extensively modified. The following changes were made:
- The bridge dome was lowered.
- The black markings at the edge of the dorsal saucer surface around the position lights were removed.
- A "spinning lights" effect was added inside the previously opaque looking Bussard collectors.
- The spikes on the Bussard caps were removed.
- The grilles on the nacelle aft ends were replaced with white balls.
- The deflector dish diameter was reduced.
- Ribs were added to the partially submerged box on either side of the deflector housing.
- The orientation of the two "NCC-1701" markings on the lower saucer surface was reversed (left and right markings swapped).
Other Constitution-Class Ships
Owing to budget restrictions, practically all other Starfleet ships in TOS belonged to the same ship class as the Enterprise. While usually the unchanged Enterprise model was used to shoot other ships of the class, a simple AMT plastic model was damaged to serve as the USS Constellation NCC-1017 in TOS: "The Doomsday Machine".
Slight variations
In TOS: "The Ultimate Computer" the Enterprise, equipped with the revolutionary M-5 computer, faces four other vessels of the same class in a simulated battle. The other ships are: USS Hood NCC-1703, USS Lexington NCC-1709, USS Excalibur NCC-1664, USS Potemkin NCC-1657. None of the registries was visible in the TOS episode, owing to the fact that the unchanged Enterprise model was used and none of the ships could be seen in a close-up.
The Enterprise's shuttlecraft appeared in eight TOS episodes. The full-scale model was finally re-labeled "Galileo II" in TOS: "The Way to Eden" (last shuttle appearance). However, all shots of the miniature without exception show the Galileo NCC-1701/7 that was destroyed as soon as in TOS: "The Galileo Seven" (first shuttle appearance). At least on two occasions this is unquestionably wrong, because these shuttles do not even belong to the Enterprise.
Re-Used Starships
The following starships were re-used during TOS. Many of them were redesigned for TOS-R for the sake of more diversity.
The Botany Bay is established as a sleeper ship from the late 20th century in TOS: "Space Seed", naturally without warp or only impulse drive. The model gets re-used in TOS: "The Ultimate Computer", here acting as a contemporary automated freighter.
The same miniature acts as the famous station K-7 in TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles" and (using stock footage) for the somewhat less prominent Starbase 6 in TOS: "The Ultimate Computer". This has never been a problem to explain because they could easily be the same design.
Tholian ship
TOS: "The Tholian Web" shows several of the characteristic cone-shaped vessels of the mysterious Tholians. The ship miniature, now with warp nacelles affixed to it, returns for TOS: "The Way to Eden" as a civilian cruiser of the Federation.
The asteroid shots first appeared in "The Paradise Syndrome" and were later re-used for the asteroid-ship Yonada, only differently colored.
D7-class battlecruiser
The original Klingon battlecruiser designed by Matt Jefferies appeared in no more than three TOS episodes: as a Klingon ship in "Elaan of Troyius" and "Day of the Dove", and as a Romulan vessel of Klingon origin in "The Enterprise Incident".
Unique Starships
The following starships were not re-used during TOS. Still, almost all of them received a makeover for TOS-R.
"Light Ships"
Some TOS starships were created with simple means and hence looked like diffuse light spots or generic illuminated shapes. All of these were redone for TOS-R to look like real vessels.
New Starships in TOS-R
Some starships were newly created for TOS-R, filling in where a vessel should or could have been shown in TOS.
Starfleet Ship Classes A-K
Federation Shuttlecraft - and other small auxiliary vehicles
Mirror Universe Ships - from TOS, DS9 and ENT
Special thanks to Matt Wright who did most of the TOS-R screen caps for Trekmovie.com. Thanks to Ambassador for correcting facts about the Enterprise model and to Stefan Posner for spotting a small dissimilarity of the ships in TOS-R: "The Ultimate Computer".

Every Space God In Star Trek (& Why The Franchise Stopped Using Them)
Star trek: picard season 1 will regret this tragic character death if legacy ever happens, star trek: picard totally forgot about jean-luc's other son.
Some modern Star Trek shows have gone back and explained things that first popped up on Star Trek: The Original Series , but this mystery should remain unexplained. Following the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the USS Enterprise, TOS is the show that started it all. Every Star Trek series since has built on the ideas and story elements introduced on TOS. Captain Kirk and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) have become ingrained in popular culture and remain two of the most famous science fiction characters of all time.
Modern shows like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have introduced new versions of characters like Kirk and Spock, filling in more of their stories. In the 1960s, television shows were not as concerned with continuity or establishing an official canon. Because of this, some elements from the original Star Trek show only appeared once and were never mentioned again. For example, in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1, episode 17, "The Squire of Gothos," Captain Kirk and his crew encounter Trelane (William Campbell), a powerful being of unknown origin.
Star Trek's Trelane Is Far More Fascinating While His Nature Is Still A Mystery
Not every star trek mystery needs an explanation.
When the Starship Enterprise encounters a previously unknown planet called Gothos, the only inhabitant, Trelane, insists on entertaining the Enterprise crew members as his honored guests. Trelane conjures objects out of thin air and transports the Enterprise crew members from the ship to Gothos with a wave of his hand. At least some of Trelane's power seems to come from a machine hidden behind a mirror that Kirk smashes, but his true nature remains a mystery. This might be for the best, as it makes Trelane all that much more interesting as a character.
The crew on Star Trek often encountered space gods with immense power, but eventually, the sci-fi franchise moved away from deities entirely.
At one point, Trelane says that his people have learned how to transfer energy into matter and back again, but his actual species is never revealed. In the vast expanse of the galaxy, it makes perfect sense that the Enterprise would sometimes encounter anomalies that they are unable to explain. While a show like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds could reveal more about Trelane, modern Trek shouldn't feel the need to retroactively explain mysteries from TOS . Trelane was a fascinating character and it's fun to imagine him galavanting around the galaxy creating entire planets for his own amusement.
Revealing Trelane As A Member Of The Q Continuum Would Be Too Easy
Making trelane part of the q continuum would be the obvious solution.
After the introduction of John de Lancie's Q in Star Trek: The Next Generation, fans began to notice that Q's powers bore a striking resemblance to Trelane's. Both characters have similar selfish attitudes, and both enjoy antagonizing Federation starship crews, but Trelane is even more childish than Q. While many have speculated that Q may have been at least partly inspired by Trelane, Trek has never officially confirmed that they are the same species. Plus, Trelant appears to require machines to strengthen his power and he is not omnipotent like Q.
Although the novel Q-Squared by Peter David reveals Trelane to be part of the Q Continuum, the Star Trek tie-in novels are not considered part of the official canon.
In the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks, Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) referenced the similarities between Q and Trelane. When Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) says something about Q, Mariner tells him to be quiet, as they haven't met Q yet on the Enterprise of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), adding: "They had kind of a Trelane thing going on."
While this line acknowledges the similarities between the two characters, it does not confirm that Trelane is actually a Q. Trelane works best as another mysterious entry on the list of god-like beings encountered by the Enterprise on Star Trek: The Original Series.
