Like wispy bangs or a cherry-colored pout, a different pair of eyeglasses can dramatically change your entire look. For example, frames in fun hues can add personality to an otherwise staid outfit, while tortoiseshell specs might impart something of a dark academia air. And wire-rimmed glasses are must-haves for the mustachioed men of Brooklyn. For eye-catching and face-framing frames, we turned to bespectacled women for their favorites. And if you’re looking for even more glasses, here’s all of the best eyewear we’ve written about.

Best eyeglasses under $150

Warby Parker was the most-mentioned brand from our bespectacled women, who either own pairs from the brand or wish they did. If you love the look of metal and acetate combined, but want to spend less, consider this pink-tinted, round cat-eyed pair from the company. They’re very similar to the (now sold out) pair that Strategist writer Dominique Pariso bought from the brand’s collaboration with Chloë Sevigny. As Pariso wrote, “As a person who’s worn glasses for 15 years, I can say with some certainty that finding a pair with this particular look that fits my wide face is a rare and precious thing. So when I saw that they were back in stock, I quickly scooped up a second pair for when (not if) I break my first one.” Though the exact pair is no longer available, the Warby Parker Faye frames also have a wide fit, and are available in a rosy finish.

Clear-framed eyeglasses are now considered classics, spotted on everyone from Gigi Hadid to Robert Downey Jr. Photographer Mei Tao wears this Warby Parker acetate-frame pair, which she loves for their low bridge fit and traditional rectangular shape. “The crystal color makes it easy to go with anything I am wearing — and they’re not too overwhelming during a Zoom meeting,” she says. Consistent contact wearer Hailey Rizzo, founder of the blog Feeling Good As Hail , opts for the Chamberlain whenever her eyes need a break. She similarly calls them “subtly bold.” But most importantly, Rizzo appreciates how the frames don’t slide down her nose (especially as her skin is on the oilier side ). “My older pair used to leave harsh indents on my nose after wearing them for a bit, but these don’t,” she says.

There was a point in Strategist history where three out of the then-four editors wore wire-rimmed frames — and since then, the style has remained a favorite of Strategist staffers, including former deals writer Leah Muncy. For her, the appeal is as practical as it is aesthetic: “I prefer wire frames over acetate ones because they’re much, much lighter on your face, especially if you require thick lenses like I do,” she says. “Most wire frames are too round or aviator-like for me, but these are slightly squared off, making them more flattering and just plain cool.” Plus, they’ve held up: even with daily wear, there’s not a scratch on them, Muncy says.

I’ve been wearing glasses that slip down my nose all my life — until I tried Covry, which designs eyewear with an elevated fit to accommodate low nose bridges. I love the look of these transparent cat-eye frames accented with tortoiseshell laminate at the corners — they’re outfitted with taller nose pads so they sit high on my face without sliding down or resting on my cheeks, and have held up remarkably well through several years of daily wear. Plus, I’ve lost count of the amount of times strangers have complimented me on them or asked me where they’re from.

Style coach Kim Hancher bought readers off Amazon at the start of the pandemic — when everything was closed — needing something light and inexpensive. She admits that they were pretty ugly, so she went and found this pair from Caddis IRL once stores started to open back up. Hancher got compliments on them right away on Zoom calls. “I think on Zoom calls, less is more, so I try to wear one impact item and keep everything else simple and clean,” she says. “These glasses are my impact item.” Hancher describes them as “kind of bookish, but in a good way — like a sexy nerd.” She bought them in green, her favorite color, but they’re also available in colors like “raw honey” and “gloss minor blues.”

If you’re eyeing readers with blue-light-blocking power , consider Ryan Simkhai, which comes recommended by Jenny Monbouquette, founder of jewelry design studio Monbouquette . She wears glasses daily, and though her exact frames aren’t available, she says the Shea is comparable, with a similar pale salmon shade, square shape, studs on the side, and more matte finish. Monbouquette has a habit of scattering her readers around her house, car, and studio, and says these are easy to find because of their can’t-miss color.

Best eyeglasses under $250

Writer and Call Your Girlfriend podcast host Aminatou Sow was one of the first people that came to mind when we started thinking about cool-glasses wearers — and luckily, Sow was willing to fill us in on her bold round frames’ origin. It turns out that Sow’s are from Valley Eyewear, and she got them during a trip to Melbourne, in a moment of panic after losing her original eyeglasses on the flight. Her hunt to find a glasses store led her to an independent optometrist with a “no-frills” store, where a pair of sunglasses from Valley Eyewear caught her eye. “They were dusty and had probably been there forever but I knew they were the ones. That’s the secret honestly: turn cool sunglasses into regular eyeglasses.” Sow has been wearing that pair ever since, and is hoping to buy a backup sometime: “I love these glasses so much, I email the manufacturer once a year to ask if they’ll make them again because they’re sold out online,” says Sow. Though her exact pair is no longer available online, these Valley Eyewear frames have a similarly mod look.

Cheerie Lane founder Kate Greer says she reaches for these Le Specs frames as an “everyday warrior,” thanks to their neutral color and classic silhouette. They’re “almost affordable enough to buy a backup, but you won’t need one because this French brand has somehow nailed the combo of style, comfort, and durability,” she says.

These frames from Japanese eyewear brand Jins saved me from the rigmarole of buying (and losing) prescription sunglasses. The eyeglasses are equipped with two little magnets embedded at the temples that allow a polarized plate to snap right on over the lenses. I love the subtly flattering pink tint (they come in gray and tortoiseshell as well) and adjustable nose pads that allow them to sit comfortably. But the best feature, in my opinion, is the ultra-lightweight construction — I often forget that I’m wearing anything on my face at all.

Jessy Klein Fofana, founder and CEO of LaRue PR , saw these glasses on Instagram and knew immediately that she needed them. “There is nothing subtle about them, which is what I like,” she tells us. Fofana opted for the two-toned “bullet coffee” colorway — a sort of chocolate shade on top of a caramel hue — which she describes as a modern spin on tortoiseshell. But the glasses also come in understated tones, including a cloudy transparent and glossy black.

Illustrator Alexandra Citrin-Safadi tipped us to this pair that her husband owns from Ottica Urbani. The two found these frames on a trip to Venice a few years back. “Ottica Urbani, as I understand it, is both fairly well known and very much a Venetian thing, but they also have a comprehensive online shop that ships free worldwide,” she explains. He bought them in green, but the glasses also come in a bright red, bordeaux burgundy, and sunshine yellow. “He wears thinner, black-framed glasses every day, so the green ones are his party glasses,” she says. Citrin-Safadi recommends these for those who are “ambivalent about vintage but want something a little more offbeat.”

Once it was clear that Citrin-Safadi needed to wear glasses more often than not (rather when she just felt like putting on a pair), she went to Fabulous Fanny’s in the East Village. There, she spotted a vintage pair from Polo Ralph Lauren with silverish wire frames and tortoiseshell temple tips. The glasses “feel like a spiritual successor to Meg Ryan’s glasses in When Harry Met Sally, ” she says. Her exact eyeglasses are listed on eBay , but this updated version is available in both rose gold and silver at Lenscrafters. “The frames themselves are more oval than the squared-off look that was trendy with wire frames a few years back, so they feel a bit more timeless to me,” Citrin-Safadi says.

Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo says that the only place she’ll go for eyeglasses is SEE. “Without glasses or contact lenses I cannot see anything clearly until it is about an inch away from my face, which means my choice of glasses is frustratingly limited,” she says. When Corsillo looks for a new pair of frames, she has to find ones that can support the thicker lenses that come with her prescription — so going frameless or with a delicate frame is largely out of the question. Her current pair, which have clear frames with tortoiseshell stems, are no longer available on SEE’s website, but this pair — sans tortoiseshell stems —has the same shape and comes in a “crystal” shade. “I love them both for style (they aren’t boring, but they go with everything) and wearability (they kinda disappear so I feel less like I am wearing blinders),” Corsillo says.

Co-founder and CEO of skin-care label Facile Danielle Nadick Levy says her favorites are these from Garrett Leight, which can be made with blue-light lenses . Levy says she wears the glasses when she works on her computer or phone, “which is now most of the day,” and that the glasses are so lightweight she forgets they’re on her face until she sees herself on a Zoom call. “I think it’s such a timeless style, so I feel good about investing in something that’s going to evolve with me,” she says. “Plus, they’re feminine and kind of sexy.”

When Strategist junior writer Brenley Goertzen was living in the Lower East Side, she would often pop down to Moscot’s brick-and-mortar store to browse the wares. The friendly employees helped her pick out this stylish green pair that she’s been wearing for the past two and a half years. “They feel comfortable over my ears and I love the chunky design. The metal rivets on the upper rims is a nice detail,” Goertzen says, adding that the soft sage color accentuates her green eyes.

Strategist writer Ambar Pardilla, a longtime glasses wearer, has worn all kinds of frames, all of which have been rectangular. But a few years ago, she finally switched it up with these hexagonal Gucci frames, and she says they’re “probably the best glasses [she’s] ever owned. ” The oversize silhouette gives her more space to see, she says; the “oddball” hexagonal wiring is face-framing; and the designer logo isn’t too in-your-face. “They’re the glasses that I feel most myself in,” she says. She loves them so much, in fact, that when she accidentally broke off a nose pad that couldn’t be fixed, she bought a second pair because she couldn’t live without them.

After years of wearing rimless glasses, former Strategist writer Hilary Reid bought these Tom Ford glasses and couldn’t be happier that she made the switch. The rounded cat-eye is a classic shape Reid won’t get sick of in a year, and the tortoiseshell adds a lightness to the dark acetate of the frames. But more than that, Reid loves how she can toss them on her nightstand without worrying too much about breaking or scratching them ( something she always worries about with rimless pairs).

Neel van Lierop, founder of Inner Compass , is a wire-frames fan, and says she has this style from Garrett Leight’s collaboration with Ulla Johnson in three different colors. “They’re my all-time favorites; they make me feel confident,” says van Lierop. “They’re classy, obviously present, and accentuate the shape of my face.”

Thanks to Lasik, stylist Jessica Cadmus of The Wardrobe Whisperer doesn’t wear glasses herself. But she does often help her clients pick out their frames, considering their eye color, skin tone, and face shape. Her current go-to recommendation is this Oliver Peoples pair. They’re almost universally flattering, she says, with a not-quite-square-but-fully-oval shape: “There’s something about the modified round shape of these lenses which works with many different face shapes.” She likes them in the transparent shade for most, but mentions that the tortoiseshell will go with almost any outfit, too.

Cadmus also appreciates these frames that feature filigreed metal and acetate. “I love how they evoke the Machine Age but still feel very modern,” she says. “The delicate details like filigree speak to craftsmanship. It also lends a vintage feel, which marries really well with the modernity of the acetate.”

Greer says she chooses these boxy black frames when she’s looking to project “serious person” status. The made-in-Japan acetate is sturdy yet lightweight, and the squared lenses and keyhole bridge will never go out of style. Plus, the “slight tint to the lens ensures that you don’t have to put on makeup,” Greer adds — an extra perk for anyone facing a jam-packed schedule.

Jewelry designer Pamela Love put us on to this subtly cat-eyed pair from Japanese brand Matsuda, which she owns in multiple colors. (They’re only available in dark brown at the moment.) These frames are balanced with titanium stems plated in 22-karat gold, giving the glasses a bit more texture. “They are the absolute best in quality and are the most flattering,” Love says.

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."

We're less than two weeks away from the astronomical event of the decade: A total eclipse of the sun , which will grace the nation's skies from Texas to Maine on the afternoon of Monday, April 8 .

Millions of people are expected to travel to see the spectacle, which will also attract scientists from across the country to study its unique effects on the Earth and its atmosphere . (Meanwhile, brands such as Burger King, Pizza Hut, Applebee's and Sonic are getting in on the eclipse excitement too.)

The full total solar eclipse experience will plunge people along a narrow path into darkness midday, but people outside the path of totality could still use eclipse glasses to see the moon pass in front of the sun. It's an awesome and confusing sight on the ground and in the sky.

It should go without saying: Don't drive while wearing eclipse glasses

One task to do now is to get yourself a pair of special eclipse glasses (and luckily there's still time to score a free pair of eclipse glasses ). They're important eyewear during an eclipse because they will block out the sun's harmful rays, which could damage your eyes when you're looking at the sun — even if it's partially blocked.

Solar eclipse glasses are still readily available from plenty of vendors across the internet as of Thursday, March 28. But be wary of counterfeit or fake glasses , experts warned.

The other big factor everyone's anxiously awaiting is the weather forecast, which most experts say is still a bit far away for a specific forecast. But more detailed, realistic forecasts will start to roll in over the next few days.

Of particular interest will be the cloud forecast , as a deck of thick, low clouds would likely ruin the entire event. But if the clouds are higher up in the atmosphere, such as thin, wispy cirrus , they'd act to diffuse but not ruin the eclipse.

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path.

Where will the April eclipse be visible?

All of the lower 48 U.S. states will see the moon at least clip the sun, but that sight is a trifle compared to being in the path of totality.

Because the narrow path includes or is near some of the nation's largest cities, expect millions of people to crowd into a band of land a little over 100 miles wide that spans from the Texas/Mexico border to the Maine/Canada border.

Will clouds block the April 2024 eclipse?

It's too soon to say for sure, but history offers some clues.

Chances of cloudy skies are pretty high along much of the eclipse's northern path, and some areas such as Buffalo have about a 1-in-3 chance of clear skies in early April.

Skies are usually more clear to the south. Right along the Texas/Mexico border, chances of a clear sky can be nearly 75%.

However, early forecasts tell a different story — although forecaster caution it's too early for truly accurate forecasts.

Keep in mind that clouds don't always ruin an eclipse . High, wispy clouds won't spoil the show in the same way that low thick clouds would. In that case, you wouldn't be able to see the moon pass in front of the sun, but you would still notice a sudden darkness in the path of totality.

What dangers are associated with the eclipse?

The  eclipse , as exciting and fun as it promises to be, comes with a growing number of safety warnings — both for what will happen in the sky and what will happen on the ground.

In addition to the dangers of looking at the eclipse without proper eyewear, we've heard warnings about potentially dangerous  fake eclipse glasses , the possibility for increased  car  c rashes  around the time of the eclipse — and possible  air travel headaches  due to delayed or cancelled flights.

Most likely, yes — especially after the eclipse ends . Millions of people will crowd into the narrow path of totality, then many will attempt to leave all at once as soon as the eclipse is over.

When a total solar eclipse passed over the U.S. in 2017, reports say some traffic jams didn't fully clear for more than 12 hours. Even worse, a recent study reported that the 2017 eclipse "was associated with increased risks of a fatal traffic crash" – potentially as much as a 31% increase, the study said .

Also worth noting: The eclipse is expected to have impacts for air travel as well.

Cities across the eclipse's path of totality are also bracing for an influx of visitors who are already booking up hotels and short-term vacation rentals , officials have told USA TODAY. "Hotels are almost sold out," said Shalissa Perry, the chief marketing officer for Downtown Dallas.

Primarily out of a concern for students' safety, schools across the country have given students  the day of the eclipse, April 8,  as a day off, a half day or a chance for e-learning. In Tennessee, for example, officials also say it gives students a chance  to experience the eclipse with their family and friends .

Ever wondered what it is like see the  solar eclipse  from space? NASA scientist and veteran astronaut Terry Virts has witnessed the spectacle in space .

"When I was in space in 2015, we saw an eclipse over the North Atlantic," Virts told USA TODAY this week. "It was an eclipse that very few humans saw I think, but it was a really unique experience to look down and just see this big black circle kind of moving across the planet."

A total solar eclipse happens when three celestial spheres — the sun, moon and Earth — line up in a specific way in space.

According to NASA, a solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth. That alignment casts a moving shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun's light in some areas. This leads to a period of partial or full darkness on a narrow stretch of Earth. 

The path is so narrow because of the huge distance and size of the sun — as well as the moon's distance from Earth. That focuses the moon's shadow on an area of land much smaller than the moon itself. The movement of the shadow across the land happens as the Earth's rotation interacts with the orbit of the moon.

A total eclipse only happens occasionally because the moon doesn't orbit in the exact same plane as the sun and Earth do. In addition, a solar eclipse can only happen during a new moon.

What's special about a total solar eclipse?

The total solar eclipse on April 8  is causing such a stir because the rare event is an astronomical experience like no other that will be unusually accessible to millions of people.

April's total solar eclipse will fall over more places in the U.S. than the total eclipse before and after it. In the lead-up to the  April 8 solar eclipse ,  doctors and a rare set of eclipse watchers are warning about  watching this planetary event without adequate eclipse glasses or with the naked eye.

It’s hard for experts to know or even estimate how many people experience eye damage from solar eclipses. Since looking at an eclipse does not cause complete blindness, people with permanent damage may not know they have it or report it to a doctor. The 2017 eclipse , which passed from Oregon to South Carolina, is thought to have caused about 100 cases, according to the  American Astronomical Society .

How can I watch the eclipse without glasses?

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses do not use regular sunglasses — You need a more creative solution for safe viewing, like a pinhole projector .

Welding glasses are not recommended for eclipse viewing .

Should I take dogs or cats to see the eclipse? Is it safe for pets?

An eclipse itself isn't dangerous for domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but experts say it's probably best to not bring pets .

Experts' biggest concern is not what’s happening in the sky but on the ground as crowds of excited and anxious people gather, said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“Rather than the effects of the eclipse, I would be more worried about the excitement and all of the people,” she said.

Another fun way to experience the eclipse: disco balls

Don't just reach for the solar glasses; a disco ball might be a fun and safe way to enhance the total solar eclipse experience .

Inspired by a research paper from European scientists, the Round Rock Public Library in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin, used disco balls during the annular eclipse in October and recommends people do the same for the April 8 eclipse. Officials said the use of a disco ball creates a "party-like atmosphere" to make a solar eclipse event more fun.

The mirrored ball can be placed outside where it can catch the sunlight and reflect it on a shaded wall at least several feet away, or it can be inside near a window to cast reflections of the sun around the room. Youth Services Librarian Andrea Warkentin recommends people get disco balls that have smaller mirrors on them as they will create bigger and better images.

"It's a way to make it really memorable and fun for little kids who may not really understand what's going on in the sky," Warkentin said.

Millions of people are traveling to see the total eclipse. Hotels, motels, and skydiving operators are making bank on it.

As millions of Americans get ready to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday — an event NASA has described as rare and "spectacular" — the phenomenon stands to lift local economies.

Various industries are poised to benefit from the millions of tourists flocking to cities in Texas, Ohio, and New York , which are on the eclipse's "path of totality" and offer the best views of the ring around the sun.

According to NASA, this year's eclipse is set to last three to four minutes, longer than the last solar eclipse , in 2017. People who miss this one will not be able to see another in the contiguous US until 2044 or 2045, the agency said.

Up to 3.7 million people are set to travel to the path of the eclipse, joining the 31 million people already living along the stretch, according to predictions by the eclipse-tracking website Great American Eclipse .

Visitors are expected to spend big: They'll shell out up to $1.6 billion on lodging, activities, food, and gas, the Texas economic consultancy Perryman Group estimated .

Here are some of the industries seeing big boosts from Monday's eclipse.

Hotels and Airbnbs book out

The budget hotel chain Super 8 has over 300 locations within the path of totality, per The New York Times. About 100 of these hotels are sold out for Sunday or Monday, according to the chain's website.

One two-star Super 8 branch in Grayville, Illinois, is advertising rooms for between $765 and $950 from Sunday through Tuesday. On most days, the rooms typically cost $80, the Super 8 website shows.

Higher-end hotels are seeing similar spikes. A JW Marriott in Dallas listed a standard room for $1,039 for Sunday night. It typically costs between $355 and $482, the website said.

Visitors are flocking to Airbnbs, too. As of March 25, occupancy rates for April 7 soared to 88% across 110,000 active listings on the path of totality, according to the vacation-rental-data company AirDNA.

The biggest glasses manufacturer has sold out

People can permanently damage their eyesight by looking straight into the sun during an eclipse, so NASA recommends specific solar-filtering glasses .

The eye-protection guidelines translated into huge sales for some glasses manufacturers.

Tennessee's American Paper Optics, the country's largest producer of protective eclipse eyeglasses, has seen a big jump in sales compared with the total eclipse in 2017.

The company started taking eclipse orders two years in advance, John Jerit, the company's founder, told NPR on Friday. The glasses sold for $1.50 to $2 apiece.

"We've shipped already about 70 million glasses, and I suspect I'm going to approach right at 75 million by the time next week comes," Jerit said.

American Paper Optics sold out of glasses this year after producing about 30 million more glasses than it did for the total solar eclipse in 2017, according to a sales figure on the company's site .

Eclipse skydiving attracts thrill seekers

Some adrenaline junkies seeking a novel vantage point are planning to jump during totality to enjoy the darkness from the sky.

A group of 30 skydivers plans to jump in northern New York on Monday, Fox News reported . Tickets for the dive, hosted by the local company Skydive the Falls, sold out in seven minutes after they went live in January.

"We're going to jump one minute prior to totality, so we can enjoy totality in full under our parachutes," Jason Berger, a co-owner of Skydive the Falls, told Fox News.

A similar event in Dallas sold out of its $250 eclipse skydive tickets, too.

For sun observers on the ground, restaurants are making the most of the celestial phenomenon with eclipse menus and specials. Establishments like Smoothie King, Applebee's, and Sonic are offering special eclipse-themed smoothies and margaritas, as well as "blackout" drinks to mark the occasion.

Risk of eye damage is even more pronounced during travel when we’re often exposed to constant sun. Polarized lenses are especially great when driving, exercising outdoors or doing water activities like boating.

To determine the best quality sunglasses for men, we tested 17 pairs over the course of six months. While wearing them during everyday activities like going on walks, running errands, driving, hiking, playing sports, and running, we judged each pair based on five characteristics: quality, fit, appearance, performance, and value.

These sunglasses are extremely high quality and can easily slide into your pocket.

The style is more unique than classic. 

Originally introduced in the 1960s as the world’s first folding sunglasses, the Persol 714s continue to stand out as perhaps the most packable, easiest-to-transport shades on the market. After three months of tests, we found they fully blocked all sunlight and glare and were adequately polarized. However, we did find them to be a tad uncomfortable during extended use. Overall, we recommend these shades for someone who wants something very packable and who appreciates the style.

While these sunglasses didn’t quite make our list of the very best, we still found them deserving of an honorable mention.

Tifosi Swank Polarized : We loved the fit and quality of these sunnies, but they didn’t shine in terms of design or style when compared to others we tested.

Persol 3O3292S : These pricey retro sunglasses have a unique style, but we found they didn’t do a great job of blocking sunlight.

We tested 17 pairs of sunglasses during everyday activities like driving, shopping, running and more for a period of three months. We examined the different parts of the sunglasses, including the lenses, arms, hinges, and bridge/nose pads, then put them on to check for fit, quality, performance, appearance, and value. We also conducted polarization tests to see whether sunglasses that were labeled as such were actually effective. Our tests will continue for a total period of six months.

Tips for Buying Sunglasses for Men

Prioritize uv protection.

Optometrist Jennifer Tsai recommends looking for 100 percent UV-blocking lenses (sometimes labels indicate “UV absorption up to 400mm”). Cheaper sunglasses may not offer this level of protection, even if they are made to be darker, which can cause pupils to dilate, creating a higher risk of sun damage. 

Choose polarized lenses for water or snow

Polarized lenses are a great idea when partaking in water or snow sports like fishing and skiing, as exposure to the sun’s glare can lead to eye damage.

Consider a virtual try-on before buying

Many sunglasses brands offer a virtual try-on feature, which uses augmented reality to see how the shades will look on your face before buying. This is a great way to get a feel for how the glasses will look before making a commitment, and important since everyone’s face shape is unique. Some companies, like Warby Parker, also let you try on the sunglasses at home with the option to return them if they don’t fit perfectly.

Polarized lenses have a special chemical filter that blocks sunlight and glare. These are especially ideal during water and snow sports, when the sun is extra reflective. 

Simply rinse and rub with a dab of simple dish soap on your finger. Then rinse again and dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Sunglasses tend to be listed by the width of the lens, (i.e. 55mm), or in a general size like M (medium) or XL (extra-large). When trying them on, they should fit snugly across your nose and ears. If you want to protect your eyes as much as possible, opt for larger lenses that provide more coverage.

Lens color can make a difference in how you see the world because different colors can create different levels of depth perception and contrast. Green can help block out blue light, helping with precision sports like tennis, baseball, and golf, or driving on sunny days. Brown can help increase depth perception, which is also beneficial for sports like golf and baseball. Red can help increase visual depth and contrast, which would be useful for skiing, cycling, and driving. Yellow can help cut through low-light, foggy, hazy, or overcast weather conditions.

Among the many stunning sights captured across the U.S. and Canada on April 9, the total solar eclipse darkened the skies over Niagara Falls.

(CNN) —  Now that Monday’s celestial spectacle has come and gone, millions of people across North America may find their protective eclipse eyewear lying around the house.

For the fortunate folks who witnessed the rare solar event, there may not be a need to throw out gently used pairs of  solar eclipse viewing glasses .

Eclipse glasses that meet a specific safety standard, known as ISO 12312-2, are safe to reuse, according to the  American Astronomical Society . That means the same glasses worn during the 2024 total solar eclipse will serve as effective protection during the  next total solar eclipse in 2026  that will be visible over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small portion of Portugal and appear as a partial eclipse in parts of Europe, Africa and North America.

The glasses can also shield eyes  in 2044  during the next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous United States, over North Dakota and Montana.

“It’s best to store eclipse glasses away from anything sharp that could scratch or puncture the filters, and if there’s any doubt about the safety of your glasses by the time of the next eclipse, it’s best to discard the glasses and get a new pair,” said Dr. Kerry Hensley, editor of AAS Nova and the society’s deputy press officer, in an email.

Do not reuse the glasses if the lenses appear to be scratched, ripped or punctured, or if the solar filter is detached from the frame, Hensley added. Dispose of damaged or scratched solar eclipse glasses by removing the lenses and recycling the cardboard, according to the  American Academy of Ophthalmology .

The American Astronomical Society advises against using any water or liquid glass cleaner to clean the lenses, as this may ruin the cardboard and cause the lenses to detach.

While some glasses may include a warning to discard them if they are more than three years old, the society states that the warning is outdated and does not apply to  eclipse glasses that meet the safety standard .

Where to donate solar eclipse glasses

If the owner of a pair of solar eclipse glasses is not planning on globe-trotting to catch a glimpse of the upcoming solar eclipses, there are several organizations collecting viewers with the aim of donating to those who will be on the path of upcoming events.

Eclipse Glasses USA , a retailer of eclipse glasses approved by the American Astronomical Society, is collecting used but undamaged glasses to send to schools in Chile and Argentina that will be within the path where the October 2024 annular eclipse, otherwise known as the “ring of fire,” will be visible.

Astronomers Without Borders , a nonprofit organization that collected more than 2 million glasses after the 2017 total solar eclipse and redistributed hundreds of thousands of pairs before the 2024 eclipse, has a growing list of  drop-off locations  for donations of gently used glasses.

The solar eclipse could deliver a $6 billion economic boom: "The whole community is sold out"

Steve Wright said he first heard about the total eclipse on April 8 four years ago, when a visitor booked the first room for the event at Vermont's Jay Peak Resort. Wright, the resort's general manager, said he soon started hearing rumblings from other ski areas. 

"They said, 'The hype is real'," he recalled, adding that he's never seen anything quite like the visitor excitement over the eclipse.

That early prediction turned out to be prescient, with Wright noting that all of Jay Peak's 900 rooms have been fully booked for April 7 — at a cost of about $500 per night — for a year and a half. By comparison, the resort had roughly 80 bookings on the same day last year. Roughly 800 rooms are booked for April 8, the day of the eclipse. 

Indeed, tourists are getting into the spirit of the rare celestial event, a major boon for local businesses across the eclipse's direct path. 

One couple is getting married at the 4,000 summit of Jay Peak during the eclipse, while the resort will have a Pink Floyd cover band paying "The Dark Side of the Moon" at the base. And with more than a foot of snow forecast to arrive just ahead of the eclipse, skiers are also likely to hit the slopes as the moon and the sun align. 

Wright said he expects his resort to book as much revenue over the April 5-8 weekend as it typically would during the entire month of April. 

"It has been well advertised that we're at the end of the path of totality and we will have the best look at the eclipse, at over three and a half minutes," he told CBS MoneyWatch, adding the event is giving a boost not just to Jay Peak, but to the entire region, a rural part of Vermont that is known for scenic farms and ski areas. "The whole community is sold out."

The total solar eclipse isn't just throwing shade across the dozen states in line for the astronomical event — it's also shining an economic bonanza on states from Texas to Vermont. The eclipse could bring a financial boost of as much as $6 billion, thanks to increased spending on hotels, restaurants and travel, according to an estimate from the Perryman Group, an economic analysis firm. 

"It is amazing how much this has captured the imagination," Ray Perryman, an economist and CEO of the Perryman Group, told CBS MoneyWatch. "It'll be concentrated in a short period of time, but it does give these cities an opportunity to show themselves off, including the smaller cities."

The eclipse is likely to jolt local economies partly because of its timing, Perryman noted. Americans have returned to their pre-pandemic travel habits, while the event is occurring in spring, when people are more likely to want to travel than in winter. 

"There's also the fact that we won't have another eclipse like this for many years," he said.

Tthe next total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. won't occur until 2045, according to NASA.

"It's not only a scientific phenomenon, but an emotional one as well," Dan Schneiderman, the eclipse partnership coordinator at the Rochester Museum of Science, told CBS News. 

Bill Nye and Dark Side Stout

April 8 will bring viewing parties across cities both large and small that lie in the eclipse's path. Events range from the Eclipse-O-Rama 2024 with science expert Bill Nye in Fredericksburg, Texas, at $325 per ticket, to a NASA-sponsored gathering  at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (a more budget-conscious $20 per ticket.)

Companies also are issuing special commemorative items to draw people to their viewing parties, such as Rohrback Brewing Co. in Rochester, New York (a city in the path of the totality), which is making the Rohrbach Totality Black Lager. Switchback Brewery in Burlington, Vermont — another city that will witness the totality — will release Dark Side Stout for attendees at its April 8 event. 

"It's a great opportunity to market our city, and as a place where people might want to live one day,"  Malik Evans, the mayor of Rochester, New York, a Rust Belt city whose fortunes have drifted as once powerful manufacturing companies like Xerox and Eastman Kodak declined, told CBS News. 

Texas is forecast to enjoy the biggest economic gains at about $1.4 billion, according to Perryman's estimates. He said that's partly due to Texas' large population and to the number of big cities, like Austin and Dallas, that are in the path of the totality. 

Vermont, whose population of 650,000 makes it the second-smallest state in the nation, is expecting as many as 200,000 people to come to the state to witness the eclipse, CBS Boston reported . Its economic boost could reach $230 million, one of the smaller financial impacts for the states in the path of the eclipse, Perryman projected. Still, it's a significant bump for a state with annual GDP of about $43 billion. 

How much do solar eclipse glasses cost?

Americans are also spending on gear to properly watch the eclipse because gazing at the event without eye protection can permanently damage your vision. Sunglasses don't offer enough shielding to prevent harm to your eyes, either. 

Instead, people should buy solar eclipse glasses that have been approved by the American Astronomical Society and adhere to the ISO 12312-2 standard. A six-pack of glasses with this standard can be found at Amazon for about $16, or less than $3 a pair. 

But consumers can also pick up eclipse glasses as promotions at various retailers . For instance, Sonic Drive-In is now selling a Blackout Slush Float, with each purchase of the celestial-inspired drink coming with a free pair of eclipse viewing glasses. Eyeglass company Warby Parker is also giving away eclipse-viewing glasses through April 8. 

Even though the totality itself will only last a few minutes on April 8, businesses could get a boost all weekend, Perryman noted.

"It's almost a like a concert that causes people to come into town, but they might do other things and see other things," he noted. "I'm intrigued by the benefit for the small towns."
