I find that it functions exceptionally well, so much so that I’m giving it the best functionality out of any wallet on this list. The push tab is a convenient way to easily access all your cards.

Furthermore, Ekster is the only wallet that has introduced, trackability in the form of a tracker card that you simply slip into the wallet. If you happen to lose it, the tracker can be used to find exactly where your wallet is, which can come in handy.

I can’t say how well the tracking actually works since I haven’t tried it yet. But all in all, the wallet’s functionality makes accessing your cards convenient and still manages to maintain a slim profile. It’s the type of leather that will fade into a nice patina over time and has scratch resistant properties due to the enriched waxes and oils. It also has a clean and secure stitching on the leather slot where the cards are held.

I want to highlight Ezra Arthur’s branding and presentation. The packaging is second to none, with a elegant matte black box with gold embossed typography and logo. Inside the wallet is wrapped with a grey, cotton cloth which is a nice touch. I’m certainly impressed with the unboxing experience.

The DM1 Titanium wallet is certainly the most minimal wallet in this roundup. Its design comprises of only edges and literally no front or back face to the wallet. I wouldn’t place any credit cards on the outsides because then your sensitive information will be visible.

What I love about this wallet though, is the ease of use, sliding your cards in and out. It’s a pleasure to use and its unique design can serve as a great conversation starter too.

A minor downside to the DM1 wallet is that its edges are slightly sharp which might cause unwanted friction against your pants. Additionally, sometimes while sliding my cards in and out of the wallet, the insides of the wallet would trim some of the plastic off my cards which can be an annoyance.

The DM1 wallet comes in aluminum, nickel or titanium. I have the titanium in black which is super lightweight. There’s also titanium money clip that you can add on to the wallet or use individually. Keep in mind if you do attach it to your wallet, it will take up one of the card spaces.

The Carl Friedrik Slim Leather Card Holder has plenty of slots for all of your cash and cards. What’s different about this one is the open middle slot to handle all of your bills. It’s accompanied by 4 external card slots, 2 on the front and 2 on the back.

As for appearance, the wallet has smooth leather surface (Italian Vachetta leather), the complete opposite of the Kodiak Leather minimalist wallet (reviewed below). There’s a clean stitching with a single-filament thread and hand painted edges. The details are clean and on point.

The logotype “ CARL FRIEDRIK ” is embossed at the front-bottom of the wallet. I opted for the cognac (tan) color, which is a bit more standout than the more subdued chocolate or black colors that they offer.

Furthermore, the solid packaging is worth noting. It’s as clean as the wallet itself. All in all, the Carl Friedrik Hatton slim leather card holder is a stylish, well-designed minimal wallet that’s made with high-quality leather from their Tuscan factory in Italy. It’s hard to go wrong here. 

I did want to mention, as great as a quality product they offer, that CF customer service leaves much to be desired. In my experience, they’re quite unresponsive and will literally ghost you, pretending like nothing is wrong when you call them out on it. Not to mention the passive aggressiveness I experienced from a sales rep. It’s not exactly ideal, especially for a smaller company.

HuMn wallets are plated and wrapped with an elastic band. What’s different about these plated wallets compared to others is that it has two grooves at the top of the wallet which makes it super easy to spread the plates apart to access your cards. It’s a small, but convenient design feature.

Overall, both the aluminum and carbon fiber mini wallets are pretty lightweight coming in at 1.6 oz and 1.3 oz respectively. Both wallets have unique styling; the aluminum being powder coated and smooth while the carbon fiber has EMI/RFI mesh embedding and a shiny finish.

Ultimately if you like the look and functionality of plated wallets, HuMn’s aluminum and carbon fiber wallets are solid options. They’re well built, made in the USA and RFID secured.

In my experience, it takes a little getting used to the functionality of the wallet, but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually quite intuitive and convenient to use.

All in all, I like the sleek appearance and solid feeling of the Radix Element. It also has RFID-blocking steel for those who appreciate the extra security

The middle slip pocket is perfect for cash or other perhaps some loose change, while there’s 4 outer slots for your credit cards. Each pocket is lined with a polka dot pattern which is a nice little design detail.

Finally, the packaging is worth noting, the wallet comes in a clean, gray matte box. And inside the box, the wallet is stored in a canvas pouch. The little details always count.

All in all, the Sena Deen Slim wallet is a clean and simple, slim wallet that’s made with a soft black or brown full grain leather—and a fantastic minimal wallet option.

The Best Slim Wallet

As a cashless society inches ever closer, a slim wallet becomes all you need.

A good one will also be comfortable in your pocket and bring you some pleasure—or maybe even a compliment—every time you take it out.

We tested more than two dozen slim wallets to find our eight favorite leather and non-leather bifolds, synthetic or Tyvek bifolds, and leather  and non-leather card holders in a variety of styles.

The research

Who this is for, the best slim bifold wallets, the best card holders, why you should trust us, how we picked and tested, what about rfid protection, the competition, frequently asked questions.

If you carry a wallet in your pants, consider a slim wallet (either a bifold or a card holder) over a more traditional thick wallet.

A slim wallet makes your silhouette look less lumpy and bulky, whether you tuck it in your front pocket or back pocket. If you carry eight or fewer cards, plus some cash, and would like to fit your wallet in a pocket rather than a fanny pack, a messenger bag, or a handbag, try one of these.

This beautifully simple leather bifold is a straightforward and—more important—functional wallet that’s not as expensive as it looks and feels.

Buying Options

The Leatherology Thin Bifold Wallet is the platonic ideal of the leather wallet. It doesn’t have any gimmicks such as technically advanced materials or innovative pockets—it’s basically what older generations might think of when they hear “slim leather wallet.”

It’s very thin and subtle. It has a low profile (a little less than 0.75 inch when filled with six cards), and it’s devoid of any logos beyond the debossed Leatherology name on the interior.

It feels high-quality. It’s made of extremely supple full-grain leather—which has been processed less and is higher quality than cheaper, corrected-grain leathers—and the stitching along the outside edges is tight and precise, especially compared with the widely spaced and somewhat amateurish stitches we saw on wallets from Phil’s Wallets and Thirteen50 .

It’s a pleasure to use. Cards slide in and out with ease, but the slots aren’t so wide that you might worry about them slipping out. You could easily fit eight cards in the Leatherology wallet (six in the slots, plus two in the extra interior pockets).

It’s customizable. Leatherology also offers a personalized monogram option for up to four characters (in any of three sizes, two fonts, and four colors) on either the exterior or interior of the wallet. (We didn’t try it, though.)

Flaws but not dealbreakers: 

• It has almost no distinguishing factors, to the point that you might have difficulty coming up with any notable descriptive details if you were to lose it.

A waterproof non-leather bifold: Slimfold Micro Soft Shell Wallet

A functional (if basic-looking) non-leather bifold.

Made of a stretching material that securely holds your cards while allowing you to pull them out easily, this wallet makes a strong case for innovative materials beyond leather. But we wish it came in more patterns.

The Slimfold Micro Soft Shell Wallet is made of a waterproof soft-shell material from the Gore company (the brand behind Gore-Tex) that’s almost as thin as a piece of paper but durable and stretchy.

It holds a lot. This wallet sports three card sleeves and has two additional hidden pockets behind the cash sleeve, which in our testing comfortably held up to three cards each. It handily accommodated 13 cards without becoming uncomfortably snug.

It’s under warranty and waterproof. We tested Slimfold’s claim that the material is waterproof by spilling some water on it; the water did indeed bead on top and leave the interior dry. We also love the extremely generous five-year warranty .

You have the option of RFID. The Slimfold Micro Soft Shell in black is available both with and without RFID protection, an extra feature meant to help shield the wallet from being “skimmed” by hackers. We don’t think RFID offers any substantive safety or improvements over going without,  but for $4 more, it won’t cause you any harm if you opt to have it. At this writing, all other available colors of this wallet automatically include RFID protection.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

• The design is extremely basic. You can go with a black wallet and a different stitching color (gray, orange, or red), or you can choose an orange, gray or navy wallet instead of black.
• Though the Slimfold wallet is extremely well designed and of high quality, it doesn’t read as expensive with its lack of beautiful stitching, individual card slots, and eye-catching prints.

Best minimalist wallet for your front pocket: Dun Wallet

An extremely minimalist leather wallet

If you’re looking for something less traditional, this wallet is truly thinner than any other bifold we found, though its lack of a bill compartment may take getting used to.

The Dun Wallet is billed as the world’s thinnest wallet. Though we’re not able to verify that claim, it certainly is the thinnest wallet that we tested.

It’s extremely thin. The whole wallet is barely thicker than half an inch when full, and unlike traditional bifolds, it lacks a cash sleeve, so it has no extra layer of leather—just a triangular piece of leather overlaying the card slot that you’re meant to slide your bills through.

It’s cool-looking. The Dun Wallet certainly has some wow factor, and not in an obnoxious way—it’s discreet enough to look like a regular wallet, but if someone were to examine it closely, they would notice that it definitely isn’t one.

• It doesn’t carry many cards. The wallet has only four slots, and we were able to fit two within each, for a total of eight.
• The triangular sleeve is slightly annoying, especially when you have to flip bills over from side to side to find the card you’re looking for.

The best cheap, mostly leather bifold: Allett Sport Wallet Leather Edition

An actually affordable leather wallet.

A slim leather bifold wallet that also happens to be cheap is practically a unicorn, but Allett cleverly uses leather only on the exterior to keep this wallet affordable.

The Allett Sport Wallet Leather Edition is a great leather wallet that’s actually affordable, a bit unusual-looking, and capable of stowing a tiny pen in a pinch.

It has leather only on the exterior. While Allett uses soft leather outside, inside it uses a moisture-wicking nylon. The wallet has just two card pockets, both of which are lined with rubber for maximum grip; Allett claims that you can fit five in each, for a total of 10 cards.

It’s surprisingly small. For a leather bifold, this wallet is extremely compact—not just thin but also both shorter and narrower than the Leatherology wallet (and shorter than the Dun wallet).

• When we first saw the exterior, we thought it was a plastic-leather material, but it feels like the leather of a car seat, which is fitting because it’s made of common-in-cars napa leather. Napa (also spelled nappa ) leather is full-grain leather that becomes especially soft after a salt-treatment process .
• The stitching on the exterior of our Allett wallet was a bit uneven, as the lines along the edges criss-crossed and hit the edges, and they weren’t particularly uniform or tight.

A super-slim Tyvek wallet: Slimfold Micro Tyvek Wallet

A tyvek wallet that almost passes as designer.

These Tyvek wallets, especially in the eye-popping patterns, have an understated charm that’s more classic than corny.

The Slimfold Micro Tyvek Wallet is a great choice if you want a truly compact Tyvek wallet with a vibrantly sophisticated design—and you don’t mind having to replace it annually.

It’s terrific looking. I’ve been carrying this Slimfold wallet almost every day since working on this guide. The prints are beautiful and vibrant, and we’re particularly enamored of the repeating Monyou wave (a traditional Japanese pattern) and cubic looks, which are far more sophisticated than the patterns generally found on Tyvek wallets.

It holds a bunch of cards. The wallet is a delight to use, as cards slide easily into any slot. We could easily slip five cards into the left slot and two cards each into the two on the right—with each of the back hidden pockets holding three cards, the wallet can accommodate 15 cards easily.

It has RFID protection. This feature may not be truly necessary, though, because we don’t think RFID protection offers any substantive safety or improvements .

• Because the Tyvek material that holds this wallet together is basically a very durable paper, we weren’t expecting the wallet to last an especially long time. But after just two months of use, the edges of our wallet started to fray and lose their color.

If the Slimfold Tyvek wallets are handsome, the Mighty Wallet ones are just fun—a slew of patterns make it easy to choose something delightful(ly weird), and they’re a joy to use.

If you’re looking for a more durable Tyvek wallet with fun designs that keep the tongue firmly in cheek, consider a Mighty Wallet .

You get lots of slots. With two expandable card pockets, two cash pockets, and two hidden pockets along the edges of the wallet, the Mighty Wallet isn’t short on storage. Cards fit neatly and snugly in the pockets, though we wish the wallet offered a few more interior slot options.

It offers cheeky designs. If you want an extra-thin wallet, this case is truly skinny, measuring under half an inch even when fully stuffed. It’s colorful, too.

The Herschel Charlie Wallet , with its eye-catching contrast and youthful material, is the card holder we’d get for a cool cousin in college. It’s an extremely thin card holder that comes in a slew of zippy colors.

The construction is high-quality. The stitching is tight and uniform, and we love that it doesn’t haphazardly run into the edge of the case.

It comes in fun colors. The polyester wallet is available in six energetic designs—we appreciate the contrasting color panels in particular—that make it something you’re likely to enjoy using every day.

It’s easy to use. We recommend this card holder’s reflective polyester over the more common fabric-style polyester we found on other wallets because cards fit into this case snugly without being overly tight. We wouldn’t try to stick more than the recommended four cards into the slots, though, as this polyester doesn’t have much give.

• It’s tall for a card case (3 inches versus the 2.75 inches of the Leatherology card case), a difference that we could feel in our pockets.

I’ve worked as a magazine editor since 2007, often specializing in men’s style. Before starting my current role at Wirecutter, I was deputy editor at New York magazine’s The Strategist, where I often wrote about things to buy your boyfriend , tote bags , and other fashion phenomena . I’ve also personally been an owner of slim wallets for more than a decade, particularly card holders.

We consulted other slim wallet guides and forums to select our list of 46 bifold wallets and 32 card holders. From there, we culled the list by setting parameters around what most people would reasonably want to pay for a wallet (between $50 and $100 for a leather bifold and up to $50 for a leather card case), after which we eliminated options that deviated too far from the basic slim wallet, either with uncomfortable materials such as metal or with complicated folding patterns.

We then tested 16 bifolds and 10 card holders to determine the very best slim wallets for most people. Our main criterion was aesthetic: Was this a wallet you’d be happy and even proud to carry around? (Unattractive wallets need not apply.)

From there, the most important factor for us to assess was ease of use. Did cards slide in and out easily? Did the material have some give? We opted for wallets that were comfortable to have in your pocket and easy to get cards in and out of from day one.

We also set the wallets in our back pockets and sat on them to determine their comfort.

And of course, we measured their dimensions and considered how many cards they could store.

RFID-blocking wallets block out radio-frequency identification, which in theory digital pickpockets can use to steal the data on your credit cards and carry out identity theft.

Although it’s certainly possible for thieves to swipe information this way, there has never been a documented case of its happening in the real world. Experts at the Identity Theft Resource Center and others note that there are far easier ways for thieves to steal identifying information , most often en masse online.

So although RFID-blocking wallets serve a purpose, we didn’t consider the technology worth the additional cost, especially when enclosing your cards in a piece of aluminum foil can achieve the same results as using an RFID-blocking wallet. But at the same time, we didn’t consider its presence to be enough of a detriment for us to dismiss any of our picks.

The Big Skinny Mini Skinny Card Holder was a bit of an aesthetic letdown (the thumb slot bordered on just plain unattractive), and while the slots for cards worked fine, the giant logo and overall cheap appearance of the wallet caused us to nix it from our list.

Our testers were enamored of the Chester Mox Slim Wallet , but although this card case is definitely stunning, it’s not particularly functional. With only two card slots in this slim wallet, the testing we did with four cards caused it to pucker badly.

The Kisetsu Haru Wallet had an interesting vertical orientation, but somehow that made the sliding of credit cards trickier to negotiate. Although we liked the burnished quality of the leather, the thumb holes gave the wallet a somewhat cheap look and feel that undermined its sophistication.

We wanted to like the Matt & Nat Rubben as a vegan-leather pick, but the wallet was just far too unwieldy and thick. It barely folded closed even without any cards or cash, and it was a beast at 4.5 inches long, making it hard for us to justify a recommendation.

A number of readers asked about the Nomatic Wallet card holder, but we didn’t test it because we skipped wallets with moving parts, which the pull tab on this wallet definitely qualifies as.

The beautiful designs of Paperwallet made it a strong contender, though we had to angle our cards in exactly the right directions to fit them into the pockets, whereas the other Tyvek wallets we tried were much more forgiving. Wirecutter staff members who own Paperwallets note that the lack of stitching causes the slots to loosen over time, as well.

The Supervek Superwallet was a nice enough Tyvek choice, but its slots for cards were a bit too wide to make us feel like our credit cards and ID would be entirely secure. We did like the variety of tasteful exterior options, though, particularly the Japanese motifs.

Though the Tanner Goods Journeyman was gorgeous, it was also practically impossible to use. There are people who enjoy devoting time to breaking in leather pieces and “working” them loose, but we’re not those people, and we certainly can’t recommend a wallet that’ll be great … in a few years.

We were intrigued by the price and the lifetime guarantee of the Thirteen50 Natural Minimalist Wallet , but the fact that the slots were far too tight to fit our cards easily, and the fact that the leather was so tough, made it impossible to recommend.

A minimalist wallet is a thin and lightweight way to keep a couple of important identification cards and a few bucks on you at all times. A slimmer wallet may also be helpful if you’re concerned about misaligning your hips while seated with a large lump in your back pocket—that can cause back pain.

Billykirk x Huckberry "See You Out There" Slim Card Case

Huckberry teamed up with New Jersey leathergoods company Billykirk to create this bare bones card carrier. Its design is simple and durable. This tough folded-up pieces of leather, held together by two stitched seams, is going to last a very long time. The best part is that all the friction and moisture this wallet will see in your pocket will develop a beautiful patina.

Bellroy took the traditional billfold design and trimmed it down for more modern needs. On the inside are 3 quick-access card slots for your most-used items, and a larger slot tucked in for more cards. The billfold fits a good amount of cash and even has an inlaid pocket for change with a flap cover. All of this is somehow fit into a slim, pocket-friendly package.

This little card case from Herschel can hold everything you need. It's tap friendly so you don't have to take your card out to pay with it. This feature also works with many mass transit cards. We love its sturdy polyester build and cotton lining.

Grid Wallets set out to reinvent the wallet. The metal card slide case has become common these days, but Grid does it better than anyone. The reason: its aluminum case is much lighter and more durable than any other metal wallet we've tested. It allows you to fit more cards into a smaller package. A removable money clip allows you to slim down even further if you don't need cash.

Bellroy took as a tiny portfolio case and turned into a wallet. There are two compartments: a smaller easy access compartment for your most used cards and ID and a larger compartment that can hold more cards and cash. The lid is secured by a magnet closure that opens with an easy access thump slot. The exterior is leather and will age like a traditional wallet but the interior is a polymer that will keep its shape.

Tanner Goods built this ultra slim wallet out of one piece of leather, folded over and stitched together. A slit was cut into one side to side a card or two into. It’s built by hand in Spain, so it’s not cheap in any regard (about $85 USD), but it’s made to last.

If you like the design of the RFID Card Holder but need a little more room, consider Harber London’s Classic Leather Card Holder , which is similarly sized but provides more space.

Note one to usually carry a wallet, thanks to the fact that I’m usually carrying a pouch, or a backpack, but when I do just carry around a wallet, it’s definitely a slim one. Nothing more unattractive then a large lump in someone’s back pocket.

No just unattractive – possibly dangerous. A friend of mine took a tumble and landed on his butt. Actually, he landed on his left butt cheek – and his wallet. He herniated a disc at L5/S1 and has had to use a standing desk since then – over a year ago.

I have a leather fossil bi-fold wallet with a built in money clip. I love it. Looks sophisticated and bad ass at the same time. Carries all my cash, my license, debit card, credit card, and health insurance card comfortably. Would recommend a bi-fold wallet with build in money clip anytime of the day.

I’ll second the recommendation on the Dopp. Great layout, it has enough slots for a few credit cards, ID window for when you need to flash it, a slot of for cash, and wider open slot which I use for stuff like receipts. The price makes it a no brainer.

Great run-down on slim wallets, Brock! I need my menswear clients to read this! A slim wallet makes such a big difference in the way clothes look on the body – especially trimmer styles. It is always a shame to me that a man would buy a suit coat that is larger in the chest to accomodate a larger wallet. And who needs more padding on their behind?!? Good article!

The 88 series is by far my favorite. I carry a fossil trifold wallet that was a gift from my wife. I love the wallet, but it is to bulky and too much wallet for what little I keep in it. I will be buying one of these wallets, more than likely the 88 series!

I really like the Architects wallet from formfunctionform. It’s a really high quality chromexel leather that will last forever if cared for. For me it’s a no brainer because I always carry a small notebook with me anyways to jot down new ideas and tasks as they come up.

This wallet merges the two in a way that is very convienet for everyday carry. So while the price is a little high at first, when you consider that the notebookpack and pen are included, those would be about 45$ bought separately. It’s a great value for a “buy it for life” item.

I sort of have two wallets. My real wallet is a rather large bi fold leather wallet I got from Etsy. It holds most of my credit cards, cash, and my Field Notes note book. It does fit in my back pocket but I generally carry it in my sports coat inner pocket or sometimes just leave it at home depending on the occasion. My every day carry “wallet” is my cell phone case from HEX, which has two slots, one for my go to credit card and one for my license. This is always on me and is the only thing I carry when I want to “slim down”

I bought the Saddleback Leather Co front pocket wallet about a year ago ( http://www.saddlebackleather.com/frontpocketidwallet ) and I LOVE it. Beforehand I had used a normal bifold and I’m pretty sure I can attribute a few years of back pain to that thing. I was a bit hesitant to pare down what I carried every day to the small wallet, but it was a worthy time investment. Great article!

I use currently a bifold with two interior flaps. With window IDs for two cards. As I’m a professional driver and I need to be able to access my driver’s license or my security badge and on road qualifications cards at a moment’s notice. Anybody know of anything that’s got that? I carry 14 cards in total.

Luckily this isn’t a frequent occurrence thanks to the anodized-aluminum plates that resist corroding and stainless-steel hardware.

Let’s begin with the Smythson card case—our pick for best slim wallet overall, and just a fine-looking piece of cowhide. The card case is both beautifully constructed and beautiful to look at, with classic lines. As Williams admitted, “I can’t resist buying a Smythson wallet at Heathrow,” and I understood what he meant. It’s a bit of luxury priced almost like an impulse buy.

Smythson is a 135-year-old English leather-goods brand beloved by the British royal family, and I felt every bit the royal removing it from my pocket. This card case announces its owner as a serious person who appreciates beauty in an otherwise cruel world; somehow even paying for a latte felt like an elevated experience. The Smythson also reminded me of something my father would have coveted but, at $185, never dared purchase for himself. I don’t know what Sigmund Freud would have made of that, but it’s worth noting that Freud, too, was a fan of Smythson goods.

This card case passed the Costanza test, measuring just 0.2” thick when empty—the slimmest of the wallets I tested by 0.5cm. Even with four cards and cash inside it was still pretty lean, clocking in just shy of 0.75”. It was so slim that I was concerned about handling it. Would my Neanderthal thumbs make using this wallet a challenge? But I needn’t have worried. I used two fingers to pinch the wallet’s ends and easily removed my AmEx card in just under 2 seconds. Though really: What’s the rush? This wallet screams “take your time, enjoy life.”

Smythson’s iconic crocodile-embossed leather also passed the sniff test. Not a literal sniff test; I mean how it felt in my hand—the weight, the texture. It felt substantial. The chocolate-brown color was rich. (It comes in five shades, including a light brown that I also loved, and any of the colors can be monogrammed for around $40.) Out of the box, the wallet was stiff but softened nicely during my testing. And while Smythson’s embossed leather isn’t as instantly identifiable as, say, a Louis Vuitton print, Williams reports: “The pebble grain, the look of it—people in the know will know.” Despite it being a 135-year-old heritage brand, Smythson somehow still has an under-the-radar quality that I appreciate; it’s like a secret handshake.

The wallet also passed my oddly scientific tests. I ran the Smythson over a dozen times with my car, and it emerged unscathed—as did most of the wallets, though I was particularly relieved here, since the shine never dulled. (It also mostly survived the laundry’s rinse cycle, with just some small chipping of the embossed leather.) In terms of size, there isn’t much room for cash. I suppose that’s why God invented the money clip. Besides, stuffing this thing like a Thanksgiving turkey would ruin the sleek look.

Like all things in Hollywood, the town where I live, the choice ultimately came down to looks. I took the wallet for a spin at Dunsmoor, a hot new restaurant in Los Angeles. My friends and I shared a decadent meal that included a slab of lamb sirloin and rainbow trout stuffed with shrimp.

Although Keanu Reeves was seated at the next table, the Smythson card case was the evening’s real star: It was classic, warm and inviting, with high-end leather, tight stitching and five slim compartments. My dinner guest—who is also my most discerning friend—saw the wallet displayed on the table and pronounced it “chic.” And I had to agree. For the record, Keanu never walked by, though if he’d seen the Smythson, we all know what he would have said: “Whoa.”

I was surprised by how much I liked Bellroy’s Slim Sleeve wallet, which—like an ex-boyfriend of mine—is thin, handsome, and holds exactly what you need. It provides quick access to two cards (with room for many more) and a small pocket to hide a few crisp bills. And at $79 (with free shipping!), it won’t break the bank. But what puts this wallet over the edge is its size. It folds in half yet remains nearly as slim as the Smythson; the leather was also soft from the jump. And I found myself reaching for it again and again.

Bellroy was founded by an Australian surfer, which makes sense—there’s a no-worries vibe to this wallet. CEO Andy Fallshaw came up with the simple folded design back in 1999 when he was a student at the Glasgow School of Art. “I was dirt poor,” he’s been quoted saying, and he made a prototype out of some sailcloth and thread. The design hasn’t changed much since. Why mess with success? I was able to retrieve my AmEx card in a speedy 2.66 seconds, and the wallet was so compact it fit as comfortably in a suit jacket breast pocket as it did in the back pocket of a pair of jeans.

This wallet wasn’t a showstopper like the Smythson. But it looked at home in both casual settings (a lunch meeting, a run to the post office) and dressier ones, like at a cocktail bar. I wasn’t the only one who appreciated its design. Bellroy’s products have been featured at the MoMA Design Store and at Patagonia, both nice endorsements for its style and durability—especially at a sub-$100 price point. And as Horween, our leather expert, confirmed: “Bellroy’s products are thoughtfully designed and technical.”

While I tested the wallet in the Cocoa-Java (aka brown) and enjoyed its looks, if I was buying this one for myself, I’d opt for the Terracotta—a lighter color that will get richer over time. Says Moore of the aging process: “The oils from your skin will start breaking down the leather, taking on a darker look. And that’s a conversation point in and of itself. Was that passed down from your dad? That’s a little bit of a bonus as well as a talking point.”

Speaking of talking points: In assembling a list of wallets to test, I didn’t consider the environmental impact. (Leather is a byproduct of eating meat, as a top fashion CEO once told me, and unless people stop eating meat, there will always be leather. Or as Horween says: “Anywhere with a lot of people eating beef, there will be hides.”) But I certainly appreciate that Bellroy is a certified B Corp that sources its leather from tanneries endorsed by the Leather Working Group, a nonprofit organization advocating for transparency in the supply chain. (Notably, Smythson only works with tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group). Bellroy’s Slim Sleeve also comes in a leather-free option for $99.

But again: I can’t say enough about this wallet’s size. I’ve already got an iPhone in one pocket. I don’t need to double-fist bricks, ya know? If there’s a downside to using such a minimalist wallet, it’s that you might accidentally run it through the laundry. (While the Smythson has a jagged edge that announces itself, the Bellroy—with its rounded edges—was softer, and I sometimes slid off my jeans and threw the wallet in the hamper without realizing it.)

If that should happen to you, don’t freak out. I intentionally put all of these wallets in the wash, and the Bellroy emerged fine, if a little stiff (and comparable to the other wallets I tested). Just don’t toss any leather wallet in the dryer. “Let it air-dry,” Horween says. “If it’s good-quality leather—or reasonable quality—then it was wet and dried at least a few times through the processing. The leather can take it.” But sometimes the high heat and the tumbling—that more violent action—will do more damage than letting it air-dry. You’ve been warned.

First, I must admit: The Rains Folded Wallet wouldn’t be my daily carry; at 1.38" when full, with five card slots and a snap-fastened coin pocket, it’s too thick for that. It’s also made from a stiff polyester that has a polyurethane coating and offers almost no give-and-take. But if I was on the road and needed to carry a lot of cash and cards—while keeping it all safe and dry—I’d reach for this trusty pick every time. The Rains wallet has clean lines in a waterproof material, making it perfect for throwing in your backpack, traveling on the go and living an adventure-filled life. At $50, it’s definitely a lot of fun.

Rains was founded in 2012 by two Danish design students, Daniel Brix Hesselager and Philip Lotko, and they take waterproofing seriously. They grew up in a country that averages 170 days of rain annually. I went extra hard on this wallet, running it through the laundry twice. No surprise, it fared the best of the wallets I tested; there was no visible change to its blue color or structural integrity. If anything, it looked cleaner.

The Rains wallet comes with a 2-year warranty, but it really did appear to be indestructible. I poured hot coffee on it (no change) and tossed it in a puddle at the dog park (gross but also no change). I also ran the wallet over with my car 12 times—to mimic wear and tear but also to try to flatten it. Part of this wallet’s heft is due to an interior coin pocket, which makes more sense abroad, where coins are still a thing. But stateside it has an unintended (but awesome) use, doubling as the perfect place to stash an Apple AirTag or a Tile—a bonus if you’re someone who loses things. As Williams points out, “If a wallet can hold an AirTag, that’s a huge plus.”

Again, I can’t endorse this as a daily carry. But if you’re stashing this thing in a backpack on a hike, the size is a feature, not a bug. The Rains also has plenty of room for cash, which comes in handy when traveling, says Williams, who likes to keep a few crisp bills at the ready. (“Every time I go to a hotel, I try to bribe them for a better room,” he reveals. “You gotta know how to live.”) In the end, that’s what this wallet is about: getting out on the road and living large.

About 5 years ago, my husband gave me an Il Bussetto wallet for the holidays. Truth be told: I had picked it out myself after eyeing it for months at a local, heavily curated boutique that doubles as a coffee shop. The wallet was royal blue, hand-painted and—I later found out—produced by a small-batch artisan out of Milan called Il Bussetto, which was founded in 2004 by a veteran of the leather trade.

When I pitched this wallet to my editor at Forbes, I felt a bit like a Little League coach hoping to install his own son on the pitcher’s mound. Or Dick Cheney chairing the vice presidential search committee only to recommend himself for the job. I already loved this wallet. J.Crew once carried the Il Bussetto as part of its “Brands We Love,” too. I was happy to rigorously test my own assumptions and—I’m even happier to report—I would buy this wallet all over again. Or, in this case, have my husband buy it again.

The Il Bussetto is beautiful and masculine, and when I’m looking to feel a bit of both, I reach for this wallet—which is just a well-constructed accessory for when you’re craving something roomy but don’t want to sacrifice style.

Let’s get the ease-of-use question out of the way. I grabbed my credit card in 2.3 seconds, but why the rush? I want to admire this wallet. And it’s worth admiring on many levels—including the construction. Il Bussetto was founded by Mauro Gobbi, an Italian leather maker who employs a unique Tuscan technique, whereby the leather goods are shaped on wooden molds; because of this, there are no seams on the outside of the wallet, only the inside, which is a compelling pitch. Stitching is usually the first failure point on a wallet, as Horween explains.

“If you use a wallet long enough, you can wear away the exterior stitching,” he says. “But if the stitching is inside the wallet, the chances of the wallet failing”—engineering speak for falling apart—“are so low.”

I appreciate the care that went into this wallet’s design, but it’s also just beautiful to look at, and the color deepens over the years—in part because this is vegetable-tanned leather. A quick tutorial: Most leather is either chrome tanned (faster, with chemicals) or vegetable tanned, meaning the hide was tanned for several weeks using compounds like tree-bark extracts. Without getting too technical here, Horween explains, “Tannins are used to draw out perishable fats and oils from the leather. Those tree-bark extracts penetrate into the leather and link the fibers together and fill the empty spaces. That’s what gives leather a dense feeling.”

This isn’t a question of quality; chrome-tanned leather can be quite resilient because of the chemicals. But when it comes to color and wear, Williams likens veg-tanned leather to “raw denim,” saying: “When you wear it and use it, it gains that patina.” That’s certainly the case with my Il Bussetto, which has softened like an old briefcase inherited from Grandpa but hasn’t lost any of its structure. I drove over the thing with my car (no change) and ran it through the wash—painful, I admit, but thankfully the color remained.

I ultimately decided not to test luxury goods like the classic Louis Vuitton wallet or a Goyard card case. In the end, I felt that luxury wallets produced by venerable fashion houses were presumably well made. Also: I couldn’t stomach sending a Goyard card case through the wash.

I briefly discussed testing a vegan option with my editor, though it didn’t seem like a motivating factor when selecting a wallet; also, the Bellroy is available in a plant-leather option (for a small surcharge). And Rains, which doesn’t use leather, is heavily committed as a company to reducing its carbon footprint.

I did, however, test a few products I liked for various reasons but that didn’t ultimately make the cut.

Ridge Forged Ember : This wallet was good fun—like a magic wallet for adults. Picture two carbon-fiber end pieces held together by a strap. But the novelty wore off for me after a few days. And the add-on money clip, while useful in theory, ruined the wallet’s clean lines, so I’d opt for a separate money clip instead. Again: The Ridge was lots of fun. I sometimes felt like a dad on a camping trip. Ultimately it was more like a gadget than a wallet, but that might be nice for the gearhead in your life.

The Herschel Hank Wallet : This is the kind of wallet you’d give a high schooler for graduation, which isn’t a knock. It’s got heft (especially for a $65 price point). But the see-through window for an ID card felt Spicoli-ish. And the metal logo glued to the front of the wallet didn’t help matters. (Maybe they agree. The current version has the logo debossed.)

Leatherology Thin Bifold Wallet : This was surprisingly slim for a full-size wallet. I enjoyed using this one more than I expected. But the leather on the $70 entry-level model didn’t pass muster; I might have felt differently if I’d upgraded to the premium leather ($100). But for that price, I’d recommend the Il Bussetto wallet, which is a steal right now thanks to how strong the dollar is against the euro, plus it has fewer failure points thanks to its unique construction.

How I Tested The Best Slim Wallets

I evaluated the wallets on two main criteria: construction and looks. How well did the wallet stand up to repeated use? Did the stitching come apart? What might happen if I ran it through the laundry (as people are known to do accidentally)? I also took a look at how each wallet made me feel: Did it make my heart race? Might it make the person next to me envious?

To gauge durability, frankly, I abused the wallets. I repeatedly ran each one over with my car (imitating wear and tear). If you’d driven past my house in Los Angeles, you would have seen a strange man (me) driving an Audi A4 back and forth over each wallet—12 times—in his driveway. I’m also an avid runner and was curious to see how each wallet would react to sweat. (I’m not changing out my wallet for a workout.) Would the sweat leave a hard-to-remove stain? I did a 5-mile run with the wallets tucked into my waistband to check for the dreaded chalky-white sweat marks. I counted the stitches per inch, a standard industry measure of quality, and I threw each wallet in my Frigidaire washing machine on the quick cycle with a half cap of detergent for 33 minutes, to see how it fared when washed.

Was this silly? Was it overkill? Moore didn’t think so, letting me in on an industry secret: “If we were working late at night and needed the accessories to look beat up [for a photo shoot], we’d go downstairs and have a [town car] run them over—back and forth.” While he was doing this for aesthetics, that same gambit let me test for the rigors of daily use, ensuring readers would find a wallet that’s durable and will last a lifetime, or at least until you decide you want to mix things up.

I also measured each wallet’s thickness, hyper aware of the “George Costanza problem”—a reference to the Seinfeld character’s notoriously overstuffed wallet . I dutifully measured each wallet for thickness—empty at first, and then again with four credit cards and five $20 bills stashed inside. I was also mindful of another common problem: fumbling for a card at a coffee shop while 30 people in line are staring at your back. And so I mimicked the checkout experience at home, using a stopwatch to time myself reaching for the wallet and removing my American Express card .

Maybe just as importantly, I left the wallets out where people could see them—on a desk at a shared office space, on the counter at a local bookstore and at a hot new restaurant in L.A., where I ran into a very famous movie star (more on that below). Which wallets drew compliments? Which were ignored entirely? And, on the most basic level, which ones did I reach for again and again, and which languished on the nightstand?

How To Pick A Wallet

Shopping for a wallet should be fun. “Consumerism is back,” says Moore, who encourages you to take your time and enjoy the process. “It’s an extension of your personal style. If you need another pair of gym shorts or a five-pack of T-shirts, Amazon yourself crazy. But if you want a wallet or a card case, go shopping.” Moore wants you to hold a potential wallet in your hand and see how it makes you feel. And I get it.

Here are a few questions to consider when you’re shopping for a wallet: How much cash do you regularly carry? Do you travel abroad frequently and could thus use a coin purse? Are you someone who regularly misplaces their wallet and might benefit from a designated spot to hide an AirTag? How much are you comfortable spending? What is your taste level? Are you out to impress friends? Or is this purchase more about function over formality?

The Price: It’s All About The Money, Money, Money

What to spend on a wallet is a personal decision. A Goyard card case (made by the venerable French fashion house) could run you $500. Bottega Veneta sells one in its classic woven style for $350. You can also get a workable leather card case from Target for $15. Wallets come in a similar range of prices. What are you comfortable spending? Again, that’s personal. Though maybe think about it this way: How long do you want to hold on to this wallet?

Says Moore: “If you buy a wallet at Louis Vuitton or Hermès, it’s maybe $750. It’s super beautiful leather, it has a cachet. But it’s also something that can be repaired. You’ve got value there.” Williams echoes the point: “I’d rather spend the money upfront than buy one every year.”

As for ease of use, all of the wallets I tested performed as directed. In many instances, the final choice comes down to aesthetics, especially if you’re looking for a card case, which Moore considers “fashion—it’s an extension of your personal style.” No matter the price, have fun with it.

The Quality: The Value Proposition

I could talk about leather quality all day. And it’s important to start with a good base, says Horween. “In any tanning process, the most important input is the hide itself. If you don’t have a good foundation, it doesn’t matter what you do.” Cheap leather is often just a veneer: a thin piece of leather backed by nylon (for strength), held together by glue. This is rarely a good idea. “Any time there is glue,” Horween says, “especially in an item you’re using a lot—and one that’s subject to heat and humidity from your body—there’s a chance that glue is a failure point.”

But he also points out that when it comes to a wallet falling apart, “A lot of time it’s not the leather, it’s the construction.” Even in a more expensive wallet, stitching is often the first failure point. There is an industry standard measurement—stitches per inch—that denotes quality. The wallets I tested were all around the same—between eight and 10 stitches per inch—and of good quality. But if you’re rough with your wallet, you might want to consider the Il Bussetto, which has stitches only on the inside and is basically protected from the beating of daily repeated use.

The Materials: Getting Better With Age

If you’re looking for leather that will soften with time—like a good leather duffel bag—look for vegetable-tanned leather (explained above). Williams likens this to raw denim, and he’s right: It breaks in beautifully. By contrast, the Rains wallet—made from polyurethane—shouldn’t show its age at all. It’s a synthetic material that’s unaffected by the oil on your hands. Thanks to its nonabsorbent composition, there’s nowhere for the oil to seep into.

While we’re on the topic, Horween is frequently asked about wallet maintenance and how often you should oil you wallet, to which he replies: never. You don’t need to condition or shine your new leather wallet, he explains, saying: “The oils from your hands should be enough to keep your wallet smooth and shiny. The answer is to use it.”

My Expertise

As for my own bona fides, I’m a wallet completist. (Don’t say hoarder!) My daily carry is a caramel bifold I bought 10 years ago from a small-batch purveyor in Brooklyn called M&U Co., which has worn in beautifully, like an old baseball mitt. (Sadly, M&U Co. no longer appears to make this wallet). I also have a black Prada card case for formal occasions. For some reason, I also own a fake Louis Vuitton x Supreme wallet that I bought late one night from a Manhattan street vendor after drinking three martinis.

I’m not just a collector. I have a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, honed over years of being an obsessive consumer, former editor at GQ and occasional style writer for publications like Esquire and Men’s Journal . I’ve toured the heritage brand Filson’s factory in Seattle and talked leather with a cobbler at the French sneaker company Veja’s warehouse outside Paris. I’m also not afraid to ask a total stranger for their sartorial opinion, which is maybe embarrassing for me. But my loss is your gain.

To determine the best men’s wallets, I first interviewed a panel of experts, including Jim Moore from GQ . I also interviewed Michael Williams, who writes the influential men’s fashion newsletter A Continuous Lean ; his motto is “buy less, buy better,” which will serve men well as they (potentially) splurge on a wallet. Finally, I spoke with Nick Horween, director and quality manager at Horween Leather Company, a fifth-generation family business out of Chicago. He is an expert on tanning and production, and (as his title confirms) he’s an excellent judge of a wallet’s quality.

After speaking with these experts, I took a deep dive into the market to find the best men’s wallets to test. I considered more than 25 options before narrowing the list to seven. I chose a mix of full-size bifold wallets, slim card cases and a few technical, out-of-the-box choices (including one made of carbon fiber). I also looked at various price points but ultimately avoided the highest-end luxury models (see below) and capped things at a reasonable-ish $250.

You can find small travel wallets for single travellers, slightly bigger versions for couples, and whopping great A4-sized versions for large families and tour group leaders. They can be pocket-sized, or rucksack-sized, depending on your requirements. There are other things to think about, too.

Another aspect to consider is whether you want your travel wallet to provide protection against Radio-Frequency Identification devices (RFiD). Although rare, identification theft is an issue, and something you may or may not be worried out. Some of the best travel wallets block these devices, while others don’t, so it’s worth bearing it in mind when choosing. Ditto worldwide tracking, which adds even more peace of mind in case of theft. 

When it comes to the best travel wallets, you get what you pay for. There’s nothing wrong with being cheap and cheerful, but if you want a wallet to become your faithful travel companion, you’re going to have to stretch that budget.  

If you have a travel document holder, it's usefulness can spread beyond airports. Always take the same credit card when you travel? If you do have cards and documents that you only use when you travel – principally your passport, of course – a travel document holder is the ideal place to store them all when you are at home. Ditto emergency cash; no-one should go anywhere without at least US$50 in emergency cash (dollars are always better than pounds, especially when travelling outside Europe), and a travel document holder is the ideal place to keep it when you're at home as well as on your travels.

This wallet/coin purse is perfect for keeping your wallet and keys together. Always. Ideal for travel in Australia, New Zealand, or Europe, especially if you’re a budget traveler trying to keep track of every one of those precious coins.

2. Nomatics BASIC Minimalist Travel Wallet ($20)

This sleek, minimalist wallet is the epitome of “less is more.” Designed around the idea that most travelers use one card everyday, Nomatic created an easy access tab for getting to your most used card. This wallet is great for every day carry, but it’s really designed for  digital nomads  and savvy travelers. Ideas for DIY Travel Wallets

Most of the wallets on this list cost less than $20, but if that’s still too much for you, there are always some sweet DIY alternatives.

Duct Tape Wallet (Free)

Yes, you can make your own duct tape wallet. Just  follow these instructions , and you’ll be on your way to hipster saintdom. Honestly, these wallets work just fine, but building them is a pain in the ass, and they don’t hold up well to weather or heavy use. Just spring for an actual travel wallet.

DIY Money Clip (Free)

A slightly better DIY travel wallet is the old binder clip wallet. This guy has a decent  YouTube tutorial  on it, but essentially, you clip your cards together in the main section of the clip, then wrap your cash around those cards, securing it all with the clip “ears.”

I’ve used one of these for a few months, and it was fine, but the clip really doesn’t handle too few cards very well, and it’s not the easiest wallet to use. You’ll probably lose a card or some cash, and if nothing else, you’ll scratch up your cards and ID. Not highly recommended, but still pretty neat if you need something in a pinch.

At first, I wasn't sure what the interior's aluminum shell's purpose was, but I realized it's a slot where cards can be stacked neatly and safely. This frees up the slots on the inside to store more wallet mainstays like insurance cards or IDs. Its rigid construction makes it less comfortable to wear while sitting, but it's still slim enough to fit in your pocket.

The lever at the bottom reveals all your cards within the aluminum case with a simple click, a mechanism patented by Secrid. It has a pocket on the inside that's designed for European bank notes, which gives more space for smaller American dollar bills. Its Mirum plant leather exterior is completely biobased, but you wouldn't be able to tell considering how durable it feels. — Gabrielle Chase

A simple cardholder is sometimes all you need in an increasingly cashless world. I only kept 3 cards in here at a time on a regular basis, because this one is really better suited for carrying your bare necessities. Best with money clip: Leatherology Money Clip Card Holder

Pros: You can pack a lot in a minimal amount of space; beautiful leather; easy to organize everything you need to carry.

Cons:  Interior flap isn't very secure.

I typically carry cash and nine cards (ID, insurance, credit cards, including three metal cards, etc.) and found that the Leatherology Money Clip Card Holder easily handled everything I needed to carry. It's nicely laid out inside and includes a window for your ID with a little hole in the center to get it out easily if needed. There are three card pockets and another interior flap for other items. The brand uses a beautiful aniline-dyed full-grain leather from Germany with a really soft handfeel. Inside, it's made of leather and fabric. It's only slightly thicker than an iPhone 13 when full. The money clip easily held 10 U.S. bills and I like that it's also covered in leather, giving the wallet a uniform look. My only quibble is that the interior flap isn't very secure and if storing cards there, they could fall out if you yank out the wallet in a hurry. 

I tested the Leatherology Money Clip Card Holder against the Ridge Wallet with Money Clip . I love Ridge's minimalist metal design that lets you pack a lot of cards into a small space. It's about a half-inch shorter all the way around than the Leatherology wallet. The downside of the Ridge wallet is that there's some assembly required to add the money clip. You have to remove 14 tiny screws and take the entire wallet apart. Also, I found the Leatherology design better for organizing my cards. — Andrew Amelinckx

Best RFID: Rogue Industries Front Pocket Wallet with RFID-blocking

Cons: Not as slim as some wallets I tested, but way more convenient. Smart cards can be super convenient, but are also susceptible to wily thieves using RFID skimmers to steal your personal data and credit card information from up to 30 feet away. The Rogue Front Pocket Wallet with RFID has you covered. The brand uses a very thin material containing a nano layer of metal that blocks these nefarious scanners and keeps your cards secure. This wallet has a unique design with a curve on one side that mirrors your front pocket. This means you get a nearly full sized bifold that isn't bulky. I could easily keep 10 bills in the banknote compartment and get all nine of my cards in. Rogue makes this wallet in the U.S. from top grain leather and offers a two-year warranty. The leather is thicker than some of the styles I tested but it seems like it can take a beating and will last for a long time.

I put the Rogue Front Pocket Wallet head-to-head with the Vaultskin Chelsea Card Holder , which is super slim, convenient, and made from a buttery top-grain leather. It's a full inch shorter and narrower than the Rogue wallet, but because of the Rogue's unique design, you can pack way more in with no noticeable bulk in your pocket, making it the top choice. — Andrew Amelinckx

The British brand Vaultskin's Notting Hill Zipper Wallet has quickly become my absolute favorite slim wallet. There's seemingly a space for everything. On the outside, there's three card slots plus a secret fourth one featuring a pull tab for easy access. Inside the zippered wallet, there's space for more cards, folded cash, and coins, all in a slim design that's less than a half-inch in width. Vaultskin makes this wallet from top grain Italian leather. Plus, it also has RFID-blocking technology. 

If you're looking for a wallet that keeps everything organized but without bulk, this is the one. This wallet also comes in four colors, from green to a rich cognac. I also tested the Bellroy Card Pocket , which, while compact and convenient, didn't have the same capacity as the Vaultskin while being nearly on par size wise. — Andrew Amelinckx
