Kiss are an American rock band, forming in New York City, New York, United states of America, they have been making: hard rock, heavy metal and glam rock since 1973.

Originally Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were a part of a rock and roll band called "Wicked Lester" left the band after feeling that their music needed to head in a new direction. Later in 1972 Peter Criss joined the band after auditioning for the duo when they came across an advert he had placed in Rolling Stone.

The band went on to audition for Epic Records, they however were not liked and did not manage to secure a record deal. During this time period the band began to mess around with their image, they started to dress differently from the stereotypical rock scene at the time and also wore make up. In 1973 the band gained Ace Frehley who would become their lead guitarist as they were very impressed with his audition, the band soon officially became known as "Kiss".

On November 1 1973, Kiss were signed to Casablanca records, later that year the band had their first opening for a band called "Blue Oyster Cult" at the Academy of Music in New York. It was here that Gene Simmons accidentally set his hair on fire (needless to say he survived).

Kiss received positive reception when they released their live version of song "Rock and Roll All Nite" This was followed by the bands release of studio album "Destroyer" which was released in 1976, the album went gold a month after release and their song "Shout It Out Loud" reached number 1 on the Canadian Singles Chart. The album went on to go double platinum in the US with 2 million sales.

Kiss have received over 15 awards such as Band Of The Year by Metal Edge Readers' Choice Awards, Favorite new song for "Beth" and have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

As of 2014 the band members of Kiss include: Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer.

Live reviews

Kiss & Def Leppard ... what a pair! The concert took place at Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta. As we were driving in, we could see the clouds getting darker and darker ... storm coming our way ... seemed like the gray/black in the sky, along with the occasional clap of thunder, were getting ready for a night of rooooccckk! Of course, we arrived and it started raining … but that did not stop us … it was a night to remember. I’ve been a Def Leppard fan since the early 90s … the amphitheater was packed … they sang non-stop all their greatest hits – and boy do they have a lot of them! I could see the crowds (different ages – some who had brought their kids), join me as we travelled back in time to those high school or college years and remembered that special someone as we were singing “Two Steps Behind” or “Pour Some Sugar on Me”. It was priceless! Short break … it stopped raining and it’s now dark. A black curtain with the famous KISS logo is covering the stage and it’s now completely dark outside. The crowd is standing up and curiously waiting for what’s coming next … Down comes the curtain and the group starts descending to the stage on one of those … oh, so well known mechanical platforms used during the 80s. KISS on stage is the stereotype of the glam 80s band on steroids. I love going to concerts and usually make it to pretty much any concert that hits Atlanta: old, new, rock, alternative – you name it. I have seen all kinds of cool stages, lightshows, fireworks, etc … but nothing could prepare me for seeing this band which continues to deliver on the excess of 80s rock & roll even after we’ve long past the decade of rock. It was amazing … the makeup, the costumes, that platform as they descended onto the stage … it was a combination of “Rock of Ages” and “Rockstar”. For those of you who were young during the 80s … this show will infuse you with that energy that only music can provide … for those of you in the mid-to late 90s and after … if you know good music – you know these guys and the show is something to remember!

Thank you for caring enough to see if we enjoyed our time at the Kiss concert on 3-26-19. This is the first concert I’ve ever been to here and the first concert my sons have ever been to. Most of all this was a birthday gift to my husband. I have to say Kiss is amazing. Your staff and cleanliness was amazing for such a big place. Great job!!! But I do have to say I was very disappointed in our seats. We had so much obstruction from the jumbo tron and poles from our seats. It hugely impacted how much of the show or what we could see of the show.

So instead of a great visual and audible experience, it was more audible with some glimpses of the huge screen and some stage. I wish as I purchased these tickets I was shown where the poles and equipment were going to be because I bought these tickets the first day they were opened to purchase and there were many seats in that price range to purchase at the time. I would have definitely purchased different seating for the same money. I could send you pictures of what we saw from our seating, if you would like to see them. Just sad...again I do appreciate you actually reaching out to us about our experience and actually I’m very impressed. Keep up the great work and cleanliness, because we were very surprised on how amazingly cared for the TD Garden was taken care of and again nice staff. Obviously great management. I also appreciate you reaching out to us, again Great customer service. Thank you Traci Mahar

KISS was the best act I have ever watched. From Paul Stanley zip-lining to perform mid-audience on a platform, in his twelve-inch platform boots, to the band members not only performing on stage but high above it, as well, to Gene Simmons "breathing fire" and sililoquiy spitting blood segment. All the band members were lifted above the main stage at various times through-out the concert. It was quite the spectacle.

They also did not waste time before the encore performance as there was a curfew. So they just kept playing on. I did not hear any curse words as they must have been aware of their young KISS army members in the audience, dressed fully in KISS regalia. A few fans were also observed outside who were dressed up as Ace Freley, the space object, Peter Criss and even the vampire, Gene Simmons.

At one point, Paul Stanley joked that the previous night's audience in Austin had said the same thing about Dallas fans as the Fair Park crowd had booed the southern fans when Paul had asked who were the biggest rock and roll fans in the state of Texas. KISS closed their set with the classic rock anthem, "Rock and Roll All Night and Party Every Day". Over-all, the KISS experience made up for what was lacking from the previous act and the opening one. Kudos to KISS!

I Have Only Been Going To Concerts Since The End Of 2017 and I've Already Seen Many Of My Favourites And I Have Always Wanted To See Kiss as they are One if not My top favourite band of All Time and after seeing them for the first and only time last night in London i can say without a doubt it was and is (I Stand By My Word When I say This) the best thing i have ever been to in possibly my entire lifetime (not kidding) There will never be another band like Kiss The Stage setup, timing with the pyro etc was outstanding as you expect from kiss, and the finale was awesome I have been a fan Of Paul Stanley For years and my favourite thing to watch him do is when he smashes his guitar at the end of the show, it made me so happy to see it live in person i got emotional, like i said you'll regret it when Kiss is No Longer About, No One Does A Live Show Like Kiss and if this is indeed the Final Tour they indeed went out with a bang And il'l Never forget it.

Another great Kiss concert, they know how to put on a show! The first time I've seen them in this lineup. They played most of the songs I expected and wanted them to play, from Detroit Rock City to Black Diamond, Psycho Circus, Lick it up and Rock and Roll all night. Was a bit baffled that I was made for loving you got one of the best reactions from the audience. Seriously, Paris? I think there was a fairly equal spread of songs from most parts of their career, although they maybe should have played I just wanna, and no matter how much Paul wants Hell or Hallelujah to become a classic, I don't think it will. Anyway, this is supposed to be a positive review. Kiss rock and which other bands shoot fireworks from their guitars and have their band members play above the audience and in the crowd? Yes, Kiss will probably back again, but I'd say, go and see them while you still can!

A KISS Goodbye! I’ve seen KISS 3 other times, once in the 70’s, once in the 80’s and once in the 90’s. But last nights concert in Minneapolis was a Crazy, Crazy Night!! They pulled out all the stops to make sure that their last concert here was an amazing spectacle! I brought my 24 year old son to witness his first (and probably last) KISS concert and he was literally blown away! Thank you KISS for allowing me to share this experience with my son!! Thank you Gene and Paul for the many decades of incredible music and on stage mayhem! Thank you Tommy and Eric for being absolutely top-notch replacements for the other two originals. I have been, since my teenage years, an avid KISS fan...and now in my fiftys, I am proud to say I Still Am!! Thank You KISS!!

The End of the Road Tour stopped in Ottawa last night. It was almost painful to watch. They should no longer be playing back to back shows, Paul Stanley's voice is done. It was clear that he is using backup vocals. There were times when you'd hear his voice but he was not at his mic. Tommy Thayer is not Ace Frehley that much was obvious. The show appeared clumsy and disorganized at times. The setlist needs some tweaking, not a very good sampling of their entire catalog. They often at times seemed like they were just collecting a paycheque. Gene and Paul say they couldn't depend on Ace and Peter but Ace simply cannot be replaced. This tour will suffer because of this.

Being a rock fan, I wanted to go for the single reason that they are considered a legendary rock band and I wanted to cross them out of my list.

It happened to be - most likely, honestly! - the best show I have ever been to in my life. They showed they are not a bunch of old rags that rely on top of past achievements but a bunch of passionate rock professionals who, despite their age, give all they can to deliver an outstanding performance - and the most impressive thing is, they DID!

Imagine now, if it was THAT good and they are in their late 60s, how epic it must have been when they were younger!

I truly hope I have the opportunity to see them again!

One of the best concerts I have ever been to and I've been to a lot !! Great theatre and a fantastic spectacle all round. This is why these guys have survived the rock industry for 40+ years and still pack out arenas. They can truly teach bands of today how it's done. Absolute professionals. Money well spent. If I had to find a negative (which isn't easy) it would be the concert length. At around 1hr 45 mins, I would have liked a few more songs to push it to 2hrs but seeing they are in their 60's I can forgive them for that !! Don't waste a second and make sure you see kiss while you can. You won't regret it !! Rock on !!

KISS Officially Announce Final Date of Their Farewell Tour During ‘Howard Stern Show’ Appearance

During a highly publicized appearance on  The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM, KISS have officially announced the final show of their End of the Road farewell tour, which will take place on Dec. 2 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the second of back-to-back nights. They've also unveiled a new batch of North American stops leading up to the finale.

There had been other proposed end dates for the rock legends just on this tour alone (which began in 2018) with manager Doc McGhee floating a couple loose timelines before declaring earlier this year that KISS will indeed put on their final tour performance in 2023.

Notably, this trek is not the first time the group has made an attempt to retire and there will surely be speculation about the legitimacy of this announcement.

Considering the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers booked a set of 2023 U.K. dates and mentioned it'd be their last shows in the region, it really does appear that KISS are winding down their 50-year touring career with lone mainstays Paul Stanley having turned 71 earlier this year and Gene Simmons set to turn 74 this summer.

The band specifically noted this is the end of the farewell tour, leaving the door open for other opportunities such as one-off shows, residencies or festival appearances. Only time will tell.

See all of KISS' upcoming tour dates at their website and for your chance to see them, perhaps for the final time, get tickets here .

See the latest tour dates directly below and look for those tickets to go on sale on March 10 at 10AM local time at Live Nation . A KISS Army pre-sale will begin on March 6 at 10AM local time.

Kiss have announced the “absolute final shows of their final tour,” a North American leg that kicks off in October and closes with two back-to-back nights at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Dec. 1 and 2.

These dates are pegged to the band’s “ End of the Road Tour,” which started in 2018 and was originally scheduled to end in 2021, but was delayed due to the pandemic. The long-winded trek is the band’s self-proclaimed final retirement send-off, though the band’s touring career has notably been extended several times following a “Farewell Tour” in 2000.

Popular on Variety

“KISS was born in New York City. On 23rd Street. Half a century ago. It will be a privilege and honor to finish touring at Madison Square Garden, 10 blocks and 50 years from where we first started,” said Kiss in a news release.

The long-running rock band has also booked a set of 2023 U.K. dates throughout the summer and mentioned it’d be their last concerts in the region. There is sure to be speculation surrounding the validity of this being Kiss’ “final shows ever,” since frontmen Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have shown no signs of slowing down and the narrative of a “final send-off” has been regularly used by the band’s tours.

During the pandemic, Stanley told Variety , he was regularly “bike-riding 25 miles, three times a week,” to help keep in shape during the pandemic hiatus. And although he’s had several surgeries over the years, including hip replacements, Stanley said he “[feels] great and I’m good for another 50,000 miles.”

Kiss band members, from left, Tommy Thayer, Gene Simmons, Eric Singer and Paul Stanley participate in the ceremonial lighting of the Empire State Building on Thursday in New York.

In the 50 years since Kiss first kicked and thrashed its way onto the New York rock scene, the band has given the world sing-and-shout-along hits like "Detroit Rock City," "Crazy Crazy Nights" and "Beth," and live performances replete with blood-spattering, fire-breathing, pyrotechnics and gobs of cartoonish stage makeup.

"Their schtick lifted them up to the absolute top," music writer Joel Selvin , the author of numerous books about rock musicians including Linda Ronstadt, the Grateful Dead and Sly and the Family Stone, told NPR.

On Saturday, the memorable stagecraft that made Kiss one of the biggest selling hard rock bands in the world will come to an end, as its members perform what they are touting as their final show of their aptly titled, four-year-long "End of the Road World Tour" — at Madison Square Garden in New York. The concert will be available to watch live on Pay-Per-View .

"It has nothing to do with personalities in the band or tensions or a difference of opinion or musicality. It's purely practical," said Kiss co-founder, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Paul Stanley in an interview with the music publication Ultimate Classic Rock of the band's reasons for bringing five decades of Kiss to an end. "You can play beat the clock, but ultimately the clock wins."

The city has apparently gone Kiss-crazy in the days leading up to the occasion, with the appearance of Kiss-themed taxis, Metro cards and pizza boxes. On Wednesday, the New York Rangers hosted KISS Game Night , featuring Kiss-related activities and "limited-edition KISS x Rangers merchandise." Band members also made an appearance at an Empire State Building lighting ceremony on Thursday. Staged in honor of Kiss' swan song, Empire State emitted the colored lights associated with the band — silver, red, purple, green and blue.

'We Wanted To Be Larger Than Life': Paul Stanley Of KISS On Almost 50 Years Of Rock

Music Interviews

'we wanted to be larger than life': paul stanley of kiss on almost 50 years of rock.

Despite all the hooplah, this may not in fact be Kiss' goodbye kiss. The band undertook a previous "farewell tour" more than 20 years ago. After a brief hiatus, it started touring again on and off in 2003. Live shows and album releases flowed on from there.

In interviews, band members have spoken about continuing on after Saturday's Madison Square Garden performance in one way or another. Both Stanley and co-frontman Gene Simmons have their own bands and say they aim at the very least to continue making appearances in those formats.

"Nobody ever really says goodbye," said rock critic Selvin, citing comebacks over the years by the likes of Cher, Steve Miller and the Grateful Dead. "It's a show business strategy. You take a bow. But there's always an encore."

Selvin said artists often reappear after retiring because they can make a lot of money owing to fans' pent-up demand. For example, the pop-punk band Blink-182 is earning four times as much on its current reunion tour than it did when it last re-united in 2009, according to Far Out magazine. (The band issued a statement in 2005 saying it was going on "indefinite hiatus," only to reunite four years later.)

"Personal life interferes, you want to disappear into the woodwork for a while and then demand builds and you go back to it," Selvin said. "Steve Miller took his band apart in '99. He was just tired. And he was out for six years. And then in 2005, he put his band back together and suddenly his price was up, and there was more interest in seeing him."

Meanwhile, some musical acts simply never retire. The Rolling Stones, for instance, are embarking on yet another North America tour in 2024. The band just announced additional dates .

Selvin doesn't think we've heard the last of Kiss.

"The rule of the farewell tour is that you have to say goodbye to every hall, and sometimes you have to say goodbye twice," Selvin said. "I do not expect this to be the last time that Kiss performs, any more than 'Fare Thee Well' was the last time The Grateful Dead performed."

KISS delivers explosive final concert in New York, debuts digital avatars in 'new era'

next kiss tour

NEW YORK – This is the end, my beautiful friends.

The Doors' Jim Morrison may have said it, but KISS lived it Saturday night at the most famous venue in the world – Madison Square Garden – a symbolic consummation of a 50-year career that started a few blocks away in New York City.

Sayanora, Starchild. Begone, Demon. Farewell, ear-splitting pyro to the sounds of “Heaven’s on Fire” and “Black Diamond.”

Or … is it really goodbye?

KISS spent 2 hours and 15 minutes convincing 20,000 diehards at MSG at the second show of a two-night stand that this was their grand finale. That we’d never again see Gene Simmons’ top-knot bobbing and (fake) blood dripping from his chin during “Deuce” or watch him expel a breath of fire at the end of the simple stomper, “I Love it Loud.”

When Paul Stanley took a final flight to a B-stage, zooming over the heads of fans on a type of zip line to pony step and shake his shaggy black coif through “Love Gun," it felt like the close of an era was moments away.

And surely, after drummer Eric Singer rose from the bowels of the stage behind a piano to croon KISS’ most accessible – and unlikely – hit “Beth” and Stanley, Simmons and guitarist Tommy Thayer slowly walked out, all clearly engaged in the moment as they moved to every corner to wave to fans, this was an emotional conclusion. Right? Especially when Stanley thumped Simmons’ shoulder and flashed a thumbs up, a nod to their decades of brotherhood?

More: Bryan Adams says Taylor Swift inspired him to rerecord: 'You realize you’re worth more'

Was this really the final KISS concert?

We’ll shelve the cynicism and believe that the four men on stage were showing genuine feelings. But in the most on-brand KISS move even by KISS standards, before the quartet likely hit their dressing rooms after disappearing on stage in the blizzard of smoke and confetti that accompanied the set-closing “Rock and Roll All Nite,” a message blasted on the video screens: “A new KISS era starts now.”

Digital avatars of the band followed, playing their anthem, “God Gave Rock and Roll To You.” Yes, seconds after physical KISS and their dragon boots, studs, spandex and face paint could be mourned, their virtual counterparts were introduced.

But let’s shelve that ick factor for a moment and appreciate the bonkers-in-the-best way production KISS created for their End of the Road excursion that started nearly four years ago.

During the show, which was broadcast live on pay-per-view, Stanley addressed the crowd several times in his honking New York-ese, prefacing every interaction with a conversational, “So…”

He recounted a sweet story about his cab driving career in 1972, when he brought a couple to MSG to see Elvis Presley and told them, “One of these days people are going to come here to see me.”

Throughout the night, Stanley frequently patted his chest in gratitude and made a heart symbol with his hands.

“This … is the end of the road. It seems sad, but tonight is a night to celebrate what we did together. And we couldn’t have done it without you,” he told the adoring throng.

How KISS created a movement filled with fire and showmanship

Simmons voice sounded much better preserved than Stanley’s shriek , especially during “Cold Gin,” and Stanley’s vocals on “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” seemed blatantly beamed in from vocal tracks, but no one seemed to mind.

KISS will never be revered as game-changing musicians. Most of their oeuvre consists of thumping beats, serrated guitars and elementary choruses stuffed with sexual innuendo. But that’s why it mattered. There was no thinking, no hesitating. Just throw a fist in the air, “Shout it Out Loud” and revel in the blitzkrieg of fire, lasers and groundbreaking showmanship.

That unabashed embrace of the silly and thunderous, coupled with their marketing savvy and creation of a movement known as the KISS Army will forever enshrine the band in the rock annals .

Though the sold-out crowd was composed primarily of those who came of age during KISS’ explosion in the late ‘70s, there were pockets of proof that KISS’ reach sprawled generations.

Of course it also meant that some of the younger attendees opted to stay glued to their phone screens during Thayer and Singer’s adroit guitar and drum solos, clearly unfamiliar with the rhythms of an old-fashioned rock show when musicianship was spotlighted for at least a fraction of the spectacle.

Those grand interludes are slowly becoming extinct – which some live music fans will welcome and others lament – but on this night they were appreciated as a vestige of the arena rock that KISS helped pioneer.

“You made us possible and we will always remember and love you,” Stanley said from the stage before balloons dropped during a whirl through “Do You Love Me.”

No doubt that KISS has been well loved for five decades. But the band's future moves will decide the final chapter of their legacy.

KISS to Continue Performing as Avatars Following Final Show

The post KISS to Continue Performing as Avatars Following Final Show appeared first on Consequence .

KISS ’ final show ever took place at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night (December 1st). At the end of the concert, after the actual band played its last song, fans witnessed a one-song performance of “God Gave Rock and Roll to You” by digital KISS avatars.

A press release shortly followed, explaining that a “new era of KISS” is upon us, and that the band is “marking the end of its physical existence by crossing into the digital world.” The plan is for avatars of KISS to “perform to fans for decades to come.”

The KISS avatars were created by George Lucas’ visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic using motion-capture technology involving the band members themselves. The forthcoming KISS avatar shows will be in partnership with Pophouse Entertainment Group, the Swedish company behind the recent virtual ABBA Voyage production in London.

“We can be forever young and forever iconic by taking us to places we’ve never dreamed of before,” explained KISS’ Gene Simmons. “The technology is going to make Paul [Stanley] jump higher than he’s ever done before.”

Stanley added, “What we’ve accomplished has been amazing, but it’s not enough. The band deserves to live on because the band is bigger than we are … It’s exciting for us to go the next step and see KISS immortalized. I mean, we’ve spent 50 years building it to this point. And by working with ILM and working with Pophouse, we’re all sharing this vision of taking KISS to a completely different level beyond being just a music band. And we’ve always thought of ourselves as more than just a music band.”

As of now, no KISS avatar shows have been announced. Video footage of the sneak peek at the end of KISS’ Madison Square Garden concert can be seen below, along with a promo video and an image of Simmons creating his avatar in a motion capture suit.

Stay tuned for Heavy Consequence ‘s full recap and photos of KISS’ final show ever at Madison Square Garden.

Kiss gets in the groove by selling its music catalog and brand for over $300 million

By Megan Cerullo

April 4, 2024 / 10:49 AM EDT / MoneyWatch

Famed rock group Kiss has reached a deal to sell its catalog, brand name and other intellectual property to a Swedish entertainment group for more than $300 million.

The buyer, Pophouse Entertainment Group, collaborated with Kiss last year create to create digital avatars of Kiss members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, shown on stage for the first time during the band's farewell tour at New York City's Madison Square Garden in December.

Pophouse CEO Per Sundin said it also has plans for a Kiss biopic, documentary and experiences including an avatar show slated for 2027. He also said the company wants to expose Kiss to younger generations of fans.

"We work together with Universal and Kiss, even though we will own the artists rights, and we're doing it in conjunction with Kiss," Sundin said.

KISS End of the Road World Tour - Final Show

Bassist and lead singer Gene Simmons told the Associated Press that Kiss is indeed "in the trenches with them."

"We talk all the time. We share ideas. It's a collaboration. Paul [Stanley] and I especially, with the band, we'll stay committed to this. It's our baby," he said.

Simmons also said the band will not tour again.

"We're not going to tour again as Kiss, period," he said. "We're not going to go put the makeup on and go out there."

Kiss sells catalog, brand name and IP. Gene Simmons assures fans it is a 'collaboration'

It’s never really the end of the road for Kiss

It’s never really the end of the road for Kiss. The hard rock quartet have sold their catalog, brand name and IP to Swedish company Pophouse Entertainment Group in a deal estimated to be over $300 million, it was announced Thursday.

This isn't the first time Kiss has partnered with Pophouse, which was co-founded by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus. When the band's current lineup — founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons as well as guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — took the stage at the final night of their farewell tour in December at New York City's famed Madison Square Garden, they ended by revealing digitized avatars of themselves.

The cutting-edge technology was created by George Lucas’ special-effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, in partnership with Pophouse. The two companies recently teamed up for the “ABBA Voyage” show in London, in which fans could attend a full concert by the Swedish band in their heyday, as performed by their own digital avatars.

The ways in which Kiss' avatars will be utilized has yet to be announced, but Pophouse CEO Per Sundin says fans can expect a biopic, a documentary and a Kiss experience on the horizon.

An avatar show is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2027 — but don't expect it to look anything like “ABBA Voyage," Sundin told the AP. And fans can expect it to kick off in North America.

Sundin says the goal of the purchase is to expose Kiss to new generations — which he believes sets Pophouse apart from other acquisitions of music catalogs.

“The record companies, the three big ones that are left, they’re doing a fantastic job, but they have so many catalogs and they can’t focus on everything,” he says. “We work together with Universal (Music Group) and Kiss, even though we will own the artists rights, and we're doing it in conjunction with Kiss. But yes, we bought all rights, and that's not something I've seen that clear before."

“I don't like the word acquisition,” Gene Simmons tells the AP over Zoom, assuring the band would never sell their catalog to a company they didn't appreciate.

“Collaboration is exactly what it’s about. It would be remiss in our inferred fiduciary duty — see what I just did there? — to the thing that we created to abandon it," he continued. “People might misunderstand and think, ‘OK, now Pophouse is doing that stuff and we’re just in Beverly Hills twiddling our thumbs.’ No, that’s not true. We’re in the trenches with them. We talk all the time. We share ideas. It’s a collaboration. Paul (Stanley) and I especially, with the band, we’ll stay committed to this. It’s our baby."

And within that: no more live touring, for real. “We’re not going to tour again as Kiss, period,” he says. “We’re not going to go put the makeup on and go out there.”

Kiss are Pophouse's second investment outside of Sweden: In February, Cyndi Lauper entered a partnership with the company which including the sale of the majority share of her music and a new immersive performance project she's calling an “immersive theater piece” that transports audiences to the New York she grew up in.

The aim is to develop new ways to bring Lauper’s music to fans and younger audiences through new performances and live experiences.

“Most suits, when you tell them an idea, their eyes glaze over, they just want your greatest hits,” Lauper told the AP at the Pophouse headquarters in Stockholm in February. “But these guys are a multimedia company, they’re not looking to just buy my catalog, they want to make something new.”

Kiss Sell Music Catalog, Publishing, and Imagery to Company Behind ABBA Voyage

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Kiss are the latest artists to sell off their music catalog — and, in this case, their well-known onstage personas and makeup — for big money.

The band — which closed out its (alleged) farewell tour in December 2023 — announced they have sold the rights to their music and imagery to Pophouse, the Swedish company that created the ABBA Voyage hologram show and is working on a similar project involving Kiss.

While the price wasn’t revealed in a joint press release, Fortune reports that Kiss raked in upwards of $300 million in the sale. A rep for the band did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone ‘s request for comment.

The deal involves all of Kiss’ master recordings and publishing rights, and in a unique addition to other catalog acquisitions, also includes the band’s characters — Gene Simmons ’ God of Thunder, Paul Stanley ’s Star Child — and their distinct makeup.

“Life happens while you’re busy making important plans,” he added. “We were planning our respectful, proud walking off into the sunset, because we’ve been touring, we had been touring for half a century.”

During the band’s final End of the Road Tour show at Madison Square Garden , Kiss revealed that the band would live on as digital avatars in the Pophouse-produced hologram shows beginning in 2027; Pophouse’s ABBA Voyage show, currently presented in London, makes $1 million a week, Fortune reported.

“We have always been breaking new ground in popular culture, and this partnership will ensure that we continue to do so for years to come,” Simmons said of the catalog dead in a statement. “Because what Pophouse is doing, is breaking rules. We already have several plans in development, where the avatar show is one, a biopic another and a KISS themed experience a third. The future could not be more exciting!”

Stanley added, “Our journey with Pophouse is fueled by the desire to eternally resonate across diverse facets of global culture. As we embark on this venture, we aim to weave our legacy into the tapestry of different worlds, ensuring that the KISS experience continues to captivate both our devoted fans and those yet to discover the thrill. This partnership is not just a chapter; it’s an eternal symphony of rock ‘n’ roll immortality.”

Pophouse CEO Per Sundin  said in December that the company is still in the process of figuring out how best to use the Industrial Light and Magic-created avatars, which are enormous, fire-breathing versions of the Kiss members in full regalia. “Is it a Kiss concert in the future? Is it a rock opera? Is it a musical? A story, an adventure? These four individuals already have superpowers. We want to be as open as possible.”

“We’ve all seen boxers and artists who will stay in the ring too long and get knocked out by some amateur,” Simmons said. “You don’t want to do that, you want to go out on top. And we did it the right way, out of respect and love for the fans.”

Kiss Sells Music Catalog, Likenesses To Pophouse Entertainment For Avatar Show

R ock band Kiss sold their music catalog, brand name, and likenesses to Pophouse Entertainment Group, a Swedish firm co-founded ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus, the company announced Thursday.

Last year, the company created digital avatars of Kiss members Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, which appeared on stage at New York City's Madison Square Garden during the band's farewell tour.

Pophouse said plans for a biopic, an avatar show, and a KISS themed experience are already in the works, with Kiss playing key roles in the development of the projects.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it was estimated to be worth more than $300 million, per reports.

"KISS is one of the most recognized and iconic bands in the history of music. They redefined the concept of rock shows and have always taken their artistry to new unchartered territories. The band has consistently been able to appeal to new generations of fans and our mission is to fulfill the bands vision to become immortal, and to let new generations discover and be part of the KISS journey and carry it forward. With the help of the fans energy, the band, our expertise, and creativity – we will make that vision happen" Johan Lagerlöf, Head of Investment at Pophouse, said in a statement.

"KISS has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and has throughout their 50-year career continued to push the boundaries in popular culture. The bands enigmatic personas, unparalleled band attributes, and iconic imagery have made them a cultural force and a legendary act with multigenerational appeal. We will safeguard and enrich this legacy through future global endeavors, by breathing new life into their characters and personas while also leveraging and elevating the visual world of KISS," said Per Sundin, CEO at Pophouse Entertainment.

Pophouse saw success creating the ABBA Voyage show in London, performed by digital avatars. The technology was created by George Lucas company Industrial Light & Magic in partnership with Pophouse.

"We have always been breaking new ground in popular culture, and this partnership will ensure that we continue to do so for years to come. Because what Pophouse is doing, is breaking rules. We already have several plans in development, where the avatar show is one, a biopic another and a KISS themed experience a third. The future could not be more exciting," said Kiss co-founder and bassist Gene Simmons.

"Our journey with Pophouse is fueled by the desire to eternally resonate across diverse facets of global culture. As we embark on this venture, we aim to weave our legacy into the tapestry of different worlds, ensuring that the KISS experience continues to captivate both our devoted fans and those yet to discover the thrill. This partnership is not just a chapter; its an eternal symphony of rock n roll immortality," said Paul Stanley, Kiss co-founder and lead vocalist.

The first Kiss avatar show is expected to launch in the second half of 2027.
