Luxury Solo Travel: The Best Itineraries Designed for One

These companies absolutely excel in solo travel, and many have been doing so for decades.

By Samantha Coles

Man and car on ice

Solo travel is not a new concept — gap-year students and sabbatical-taking professionals spring to mind — but recent events have catapulted the individual journey, especially in the luxury sector, to new heights.

Following the onset of Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, it made sense that an emerging trend of group travel came about once travel restrictions were lifted; multigenerational families and friend groups making up for lost time with a vacation together.

But, in the last 12 months, luxury solo travel has boomed — in 2022, Google Trends data indicated that solo travel searches had risen by an astronomical 761%.

[See also: Experience the Beauty of Scotland on Glenapp Castle’s Sea Safari]

The luxury travel industry is paying attention, with a whole host of exciting itineraries that are tailored specifically to the lone ranger. A number of cruise companies have also ditched the solo traveler fee, and even some yacht charters are available by the cabin with no additional fee if you travel alone.

iceland geyser eruption

Perhaps this trend was spurred by the realization that life really is too short to wait for the perfect time to go on that trip you’ve dreamt about. Or, maybe your travel companion is not keen on the location of your heart’s desire, and so you decide to go it alone instead.

Whether you’re seeking personal growth or simply enjoying the freedom and flexibility that comes with solo travel, it’s an enriching and unique experience — I’ve been lucky enough to visit a number of places (all in the name of research for Elite Traveler ), and I’ve gone alone — a weeklong detox in Switzerland , a getaway in Santorini , and a long weekend in Morocco .

While it felt daunting, especially as a woman traveling stag, I absolutely relished my time alone in a new place; it is liberating to explore, dine and experience exactly what you want, exactly when you want. The companies you’ll find here absolutely excel in this area, and many have been doing so for decades.

SevenTravel

A fairly fresh face in the world of luxury travel, SevenTravel was born out of the pandemic — which, all things considered, might seem like a strange time to launch. But this global pause in travel led to a re-think of just how we see travel — especially luxury travel.

SevenTravel aims to “redefine travel as we know it,” namely by traveling less often but better; reducing the environmental impact yet still acknowledging travel’s positive impacts (each trip has a built-in charity donation and the company has set itself a target to become carbon neutral by 2035); and by fostering a deeper connection with the destination through cultural experiences.

As of spring this year, SevenTravel has launched a series of trips called ‘Singlemoon’ in direct response to the notable leap in requests for solo itineraries from clients. SevenTravel’s founder, Angelee Rathor, explains: “In 2023, SevenTravel noticed a marked increase in solo travel requests, specifically and, perhaps most interestingly, from predominantly female clients in the over-45 age brackets.

“Solo travelers are seeking the chance to reconnect with themselves and aren’t held back by not having a travel partner. Whether this is through our holistic health trip in Thailand, our Moroccan yoga retreat or our cleansing spa break in Indonesia , SevenTravel’s host of wellness experiences promise realignment of body, mind and soul, and opportunity to disconnect from the business of everyday life back home.”

The one to book

The Me, Myself and Iceland itinerary dives into this mystical land, visiting all the well-known haunts and more. Highlights include a guided tour of Reykjavik , a visit to the Kolaportid flea market and experiencing the city’s cafe culture; visiting the famed Golden Circle to see the Thingvellir National Park and the steaming Geysir, spluttering Strokkur and gushing Gulfoss; exploring the Hvalfjörður fjord and wine tasting under the Northern Lights; glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull and its ice caves; and a day of relaxation at the Blue Lagoon.

It is a sad reality that not all places are safe to visit — especially if you are LGBTQ+. Scott Dunn is an award-winning luxury tour operator that has been running since 1986, beginning as a luxury ski company operating chalets in the Alps.

Over the last 30-some years, Scott Dunn has evolved with the changing landscape of luxury travel and now offers a seriously comprehensive selection from art-focused itineraries to culinary discoveries and, of course, luxury ski holidays.

Valletta

Scott Dunn also offers hand-selected LGBTQ+-friendly options to ensure travelers feel safe and comfortable. The accommodations are a result of a partnership with OutThere magazine — the two joined forces to ensure that the destinations are a good fit for the community. The partnership also saw OutThere host cultural sensitivity and unconscious bias workshops for all Scott Dunn offices over the world.

“We want to ensure that no matter who you are or who you love, if you’re ready to start planning the trip of a lifetime, you feel in safe hands — particularly when traveling solo,” says Sonia Davies, CEO of Scott Dunn.

[See also: The Great Edventure: The Best Educational Charter Yachts]

“Our expert travel consultants craft bespoke journeys that are as unique as each individual guest and are always on hand to advise should guests have any questions about a particular destination. We’ve partnered with OutThere magazine to provide an up-to-date list of the best and most memorable destinations that are LGBTQ+- friendly.

“These include Sydney, with its vibrant LGBTQ+ scene; Malta, which will be hosting EuroPride 2023 celebrations in Valletta this September; and Vancouver, located in one of the most liberal and progressive nations of North America.”

Wied il-Mielaħ

Scott Dunn’s Limitless Malta is a four-night private tour that takes a deep dive into the historical nation. Your base camp for the trip is Iniala Harbour House, an elegant harborside townhouse that dates back to the 1600s.

While the trip can be entirely customized, you can expect to uncover the rich history of Valletta with a private tour of the Upper Fort St Angelo and St John’s Co-Cathedral, make Pastizzi with a farmer’s lunch, enjoy wine tasting at Ta’Betta winery, and explore natural delights at Gozo island such as the Wied il-Mielaħ, a huge limestone arch that spans the sea.

Prior to the trip, you’ll have a travel consultant who will take care of arrangements, and during the trip you’ll have your own private guide — plus 24/7 support from Scott Dunn throughout.

Abercrombie & Kent

In 1958, Geoffrey Kent, who was a teenager at the time, drove his motorbike from Nairobi to Cape Town . During the journey, he experienced his first-ever hotel stay — and chose one of the grandest hotels in Africa for the occasion. This marriage of adventure and luxury set the foundations for the travel company’s ethos.

Abercrombie & Kent, or A&K as it is commonly known, was founded in 1962 by Geoffrey and his parents, Colonel John and Valerie Kent. While home on leave from the British Army in Kenya, the Kents noticed a rise in the number of tourists to East Africa, and so decided to start their own travel company to host safaris around their beloved homeland.

Hot air balloon

A&K continued to blend adventure with extravagance — just like Geoffrey experienced on that early motorbike ride — and delivered the first luxurious tented camps in Africa.

Since its inception in the 1960s, A&K has gone on to set the gold standard for experiential travel, curating surprising adventures in all seven continents (and, in some itineraries, visiting all seven in one cosseted hit).

From small group tours to custom trips, private jet itineraries and cruises, the vacations provide an enveloping experience of the destination through cultural and wildlife encounters, fine dining and top-notch accommodations.

A&K also prides itself on sustainable tourism and works closely with local communities to promote conservation efforts and support local economies; its philanthropic programs allow travelers to give back to the communities they visit.

There is also a plethora of fascinating trips for solo travelers — an area that A&K has been passionate about since its early days. Often, the single supplement fee is heavily discounted or waived and, as A&K has 55 offices in 30 countries, there is always someone you can connect with should you need. There’s also an escorted tour option where you can explore with a group of up to 18 like-minded solo travelers.

private jet

Due to popular demand, A&K has brought back its Wildlife Safari: Around the World by Private Jet. The 25-day tour is taking place Feb 14-Mar 9, 2024 and traverses the globe aboard a Boeing 757 outfitted with 48 first-class, fully lie-flat seats.

“Many of our guests share my passion for safaris, which is why this particular private jet journey has become one of our most popular ever,” says Geoffrey Kent.

“The chance to circle the globe to explore the most fascinating wildlife destinations is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From encountering species endemic to countries not necessarily known for their wildlife, like Japan’s snow monkeys and the tiny Philippine tarsier, to a spectacular finale in the Masai Mara, home to the Big Five.”

Cultural excursions abound, too: In Tokyo , explore Tsukiji Fish Market with an expert guide, take a day trip to the seaside city of Kamakura, or relax at the world-class spa. In Uganda, join a member of the local Batwa tribe for a community walk in the village, or meet with teachers at a Nursing School supported by A&K Philanthropy.

Safaris are not just the realm of honeymooners and multigenerational families — in fact, the structured days and communal dining make them a strong choice for the solo traveler. Micato has long been considered the absolute crème de la crème of safari operators, collecting a seriously long list of awards.

Okavango Delta

Micato was founded in 1966 by born-and-raised Kenyans Felix and Jane Pinto, and the pair are still as involved with the company as they were when it first launched — you can dine with the duo at their farm near Nairobi National Park to hear about their fascinating lives (Felix was a highly regarded farmer and one of Kenya’s most respected businessmen; Jane was a former international ping-pong champion and has helped children in need with Mother Teresa) as well as gain invaluable insider info about Kenya and beyond.

Micato is still a family-run affair, too, as the couple’s children hold senior positions within the company. Interestingly, Micato doesn’t own or operate any of the lodges where its guests stay — this means that guests’ needs are prioritized, and the camps and lodges are frequently evaluated by Micato’s safari directors to ensure each one is up to scratch.

It also offers a number of things that you won’t find elsewhere, such as silver- or gold-level safari directors on every trip, a 24/7 concierge team, Wi-Fi pretty much everywhere (even on safari vehicles) and even custom-designed safari luggage — so you don’t really have to think of anything for yourself.

Also, the services of East Africa’s famous Flying Doctors are included in every safari as part of Micato’s comprehensive Passenger Protection Program, ensuring that medical treatment and emergency transportation are available to guests.

Lion

Micato has been coordinating solo travel safaris for the last 50 years and, as such, is acutely attuned to their needs. There are a number of options depending on your style — opt for one of the classic safaris that have set departure dates and guarantee that you’ll be mingling with a small group.

The Micato Grand Safari covers the savannahs of East Africa; Botswana’s Timeless Wilderness journeys through the country’s unique landscapes; and the Tanzania Spectacular heads to three of the planet’s richest animal kingdoms: the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and the Serengeti.

All of the safaris can also be arranged as a single departure if you don’t want to join a group, or you can choose a custom private itinerary and design your very own dream safari.

While Club Med’s Palmiye outpost is often touted as an ideal family-friendly resort, solo travelers cite its hospitable staff and numerous activities as just some of the many reasons to make the journey to this all-inclusive resort on Turkey’s southernly Lycian coast. Included in the nightly rate: all-day outdoor and waterfront dining, an open bar, land and water sports from waterskiing to snorkeling, entertainment like live music and the occasional all-white dress party, and gratuities. Its outdoor swimming pool (there are two) boasts the Taurus Mountains as its backdrop.

For an additional fee, book a cultural excursion and join a small group for an afternoon sail along Kekova Bay, lunch, and visit to a Greco-Roman theater. Or book a half-day historical tour through Antalya’s city center. On certain days during the week, venture into town and browse its markets full of produce, accessories, and traditional textiles.

Don’t let the marketing to couples and families turn you off, as many resorts, including the ones listed, host solo travelers and welcome them. From a domestic stay to a long weekend in the Caribbean or Europe, there’s an all-inclusive resort experience for solo travelers looking to unwind or stay active.

We considered dozens of all-inclusive resorts and filtered for the overall included value of dining and drinking, activities, and other perks. We also considered reviews from prior solo guests, and bonus points were given to resorts that offer dedicated solo traveler programming.

Going to a Resort Alone: How to Enjoy an All-Inclusive Solo

Janice Waugh

January 18, 2024 by Janice Waugh

solo travel luxury resort

Going to a resort alone–especially an all-inclusive one–can be the perfect getaway.

While resorts have traditionally catered to couples and families, that doesn't mean they are exclusively for them. All-inclusive resorts are for solo travelers too!

In fact, for the solo traveler who needs a break from an intense workload, heavy caregiving responsibilities, or other accumulated stress and exhaustion, an all-inclusive resort can deliver the solo vacation you need.

You can go to relax and rejuvenate or frolic and have fun. You can rest and read, do some light travel through excursions off the resort, or live the full resort experience from the swim-up bar to the dance floor at night. It's all up to you.

Dina, a member of our Solo Travel Society on Facebook, says, “I have gone to an all-inclusive, adults-only resort in Cancun by myself for the last five years. I love it! A few times there were other solo travelers there as well. It's not as scary as I thought! I do what I want when I want. There are many people to talk to, and the staff is always very warm and welcoming.”

10 Tips for Going Solo at a Resort

The key to going to an all-inclusive resort as a solo traveler is to know what you want out of your vacation and how to get it. Here are some tips.

  • Get all the details.  Ask questions at reception to get the lay of the land. Are there communal tables in the restaurants? Is there a welcome reception for solo travelers? Where are the quiet spots on the resort? Ask the questions that will get you the information for the type of experience you want.
  • Go to the welcome reception . Because many resort vacations start and end on Saturdays, there are sometimes welcome receptions or, at least, Happy Hours. If you want your resort vacation to be a social one, you want to be visible right from the start. This is also a great opportunity to spot other solo travelers.
  • Go to breakfast at the busiest, or least busy time . Again, this depends on what you want. Want to be alone? Go when it's not crowded so that you have your own table. Want to meet people? Go when it's busy and you're forced to sit with someone. They just may end up being a buddy for a week.
  • Take some alone time . Don't forget to take some alone time. Whether you find a cabana at the end of the beach or sit on your balcony and read, a bit of down time is healthy for everyone.
  • Join day tours . Going to a resort alone doesn't mean you have to spend all your time on the property. Most resorts have excursions off the resort. Take one and you'll not only enjoy the tour but also meet other people staying at the resort–people you could meet for dinner or a drink later in the day.
  • Participate in activities . Whether it's beach volleyball, cooking lessons, or learning the basics of a local craft, there are activities going on at every resort. Find out what they are and join in.
  • Pamper yourself . I love a massage, though it is not something I typically get at home. At a resort, with time being on my side, I always have a massage or facial or some other sort of pampering. It's a treat!
  • Swim-up to the bar . If you really want to party during the day, the swim-up bar is usually where it's at.
  • Soak in the hot tub . While much lower key, the hot tub is another place to meet people and have a chat, especially at the end of the day.
  • Enjoy the night life . Take in the evening entertainment or just sit and people-watch, but get out and enjoy the evenings. In Mexico and the Caribbean they are beautiful.

Resorts Are for Solo Travelers Too

Members of the Solo Travel Society who have stayed at all-inclusives have more advice for travelers going to a resort alone. Melanie recommends participating in activities at the resort as a great way to meet other people. Cecilia agrees, saying,

From my experience, I suggest you join into every activity at least once. You are alone, on your own. If you withdraw afterwards, nobody is going to notice. Forget the “singles table”. It's sad and you might be stuck with people you really don't care for. Eat alone with a book. Enjoy. Then go to the bar. Sit at the bar. Keep the book handy. Tell the bartender you are alone, a bit bored, not desperate, and ask who they’ve spotted who might be good company. That worked for me.

Dan has a slightly different take.

I find all-inclusive resorts can be kind of a tough mix for solo travelers if you don’t set your priorities straight first. The temptation to “get your money’s worth” combined with any need for socialization you may be feeling can lead to too much alcohol or food indulgence. Solo all-inclusives are best for when you actually want solo time, like after a group tour or a particular trip that exhausted your social battery. It’s kind of counterintuitive, but all-inclusive resorts can be great places to truly be alone since there are fewer other solos, and you have to opt into any social events.

Sandra has this to say.

Going to an all-inclusive alone is great for recharging your batteries. I’ve been to a few. Don't presume you will talk to others—sometimes you will, sometimes you won't. The joy of these resorts is that everyone will hit the bar in the evening so it’s a good opportunity to see familiar faces. On the whole, though, just be comfortable with your own company. On a week's break I usually book one or two trips to explore the country (in Turkey I did a one-day sightseeing trip and also went to the Turkish baths, which was fab). Take plenty of reading material. I also take my camera and practice my photography skills. Enjoy!

Best All-Inclusive Resorts for Solo Travelers

We consulted two different sets of experts to provide a list of all-inclusive resorts for you: people who work in the travel industry and solo travelers who are members of the Solo Travel Society , our amazing Facebook community.

Some might say that the best all-inclusive resorts for solo travelers are ones that don't charge a single supplement. We've done our best to find ones that at least don't charge double, which used to be the industry standard.

The key to getting the best deal may be flexibility. If you can travel in the shoulder or off-season, or during times when a resort is running a special promotion for solo travelers, you are likely to have an easier time getting the price you want.

Frequently asked questions about luxury solo travel

What are the benefits of travelling alone.

You’ll travel on your own terms – and at your own place. There’s time for silent reflection and time to test your mettle. Take a slow boat through the waters of Halong Bay, propped up with a book. Ride a horse along the black beaches of southern Iceland. Take in the frescoes and ruins of Akrotiri, blinking in the sun, putting your bag down to sip a beer in a taverna, alone. You can write your notes. You can call the shots. You can truly immerse yourself in another world while calling all the shots. Often, it’s great to travel with a companion (or a few). But sometimes it’s important to take stock and to learn more about yourself. That’s what solo travel can do.

How should I pick where to travel solo?

The whole world is your oyster. It doesn’t have to be exotic and far flung. You could explore the eateries of Spanish Basque Country. Study the ruins of ancient Rome. And drink and eat your way through the bars of Buenos Aires. But you could also set off to learn about the plant life of the Peruvian uplands. Explore nature in the Galapagos Islands. Or wander amongst the monasteries of the Georgian mountains. Luxury solo travel is a great way to learn new skills and to practice those that have gathered dust. Wine-tasting. Cooking. Yoga. Writing. Everything’s up for grabs.

How much is one of your typical solo trips?

Our solo trips are completely tailor-made, and private (we do not offer group tours). As a result, the cost of a solo trip can vary hugely depending on location, duration and the type of experiences involved. From exploring a city to a far-flung adventure, the possibilities are vast. Due to the nature of our bespoke, luxury experiences, we would expect a minimum cost to be in the region of $8,000 (£7,000) for a week-long trip.

How can solo travellers stay safe?

When you come with us on a luxury solo trip, you’ll have access to our partners on the ground, local guides, and our 24/7 hour support line. There will always be somebody on hand to help and assist, including providing pre-travel safety briefs. Many solo travellers ultimately chose to travel with a guide (or several), so you don’t always have to be entirely on you own.

What factors are important when choosing a solo travel destination?

Some destinations seem better designed for twos or groups. The romance of the Maldives might offer less to a solo adventurer. Think about your objectives and needs. Do you want to go slow, or to take part in lots of high-octane activities (like surfing, sailing, and biking)? Do you want to get really, really far from it all? If so, then consider places that are naturally suited to longer journeys. You could take in the cities of western Europe. Or you could make your way through the jungles of Costa Rica.

What tips do you have for travelling solo?

Plenty. Think about the ways you might want to document your trip. A notebook, a pen, a camera. There’ll be plenty of time to record your thoughts, experiences, and environment. Talk to the locals. Spend time hanging around. Embrace the freedom of getting a bit lost. Ask for directions, ask for help. You can be entirely spontaneous, as well. This is often much harder when you’re part of a bigger group. Happily, we’re experts at planning trips with lots of cushion room and space to make spontaneous decisions and choices. And we’re only ever a call away if you want to change your wider plans mid-trip.

Do you offer group tours?

No. Our solo trips are exactly that – solo. After a detailed consultation with one of our Travel Experts, we will customise you a trip that is unique to you. We do not offer group tours.

Different trips for different travellers

We find there are usually two types of solo travellers. Those who want to immerse themselves in a culture and explore a country, and those who want to do the very opposite, and detach themselves from almost everything and explore the wilds of the world. With that in mind, we’ve broken these types of experience into two categories, below.

A – Z of destinations

Into the wilderness

Just you – and the great outdoors.

Like Ernest Hemingway or Rebecca West before you, nothing is as enriching or rewarding than exploring the vast landscapes of our planetary wilderness. Cities and highways. Airports and shopping malls. These things are big and loud, but much of our world is quiet as the night – and demands to be explored.

For those in the know, there’s our ultimate ‘go it alone’ experience: Get Lost . We’ll lose you in the wilderness, and we’ll help you find your way home.

Start planning

Examples of our solo wilderness escapes

Solo journeys into the great outdoors.

Wilderness

The concept is simple. With Get Lost, we’ll drop you off in the middle of a beautiful ‘nowhere’, and then we’ll help you find your way back home. From the sands of Morocco to the Mongolian steppe. You’ll disconnect, re-engage, and push yourself. It’s a trial, a test of character. And it’s like no other travel service on earth.

How we created the trip of a lifetime

Earlier this year, Chloe—a Black Tomato client—became the first traveller to return to Mongolia after Coronavirus. And she travelled solo. This is her story.

Mongolia

Chloe’s solo adventure across the Mongolian steppe

Earlier this year, Chloe contacted our travel experts; requesting a three-week solo trip across Mongolia. Only 48 hours later, she was on the ground.

“What they managed to create for me within that timeframe”, she said, “was the trip of a lifetime”.

Her travel expert, Rob, worked with Chloe over those hours to curate something entirely different and entirely hers. She would help nomadic families prepare for their winter migration. She would learn the art of hunting with eagle riders. And she would cross mountain and steppe on horseback.

Explore Mongolia

Mongolia

Reflections, emotions, memories — in Chloe’s words

“I’m about to depart on the plane that will take me away from Mongolia after the most unforgettable three weeks.

“I have so many emotions leaving this place. The people are as hard as the environment that they live in, but their hearts are just so warm. I was inspired by everybody I met, especially by the way that they openly appreciated and looked after one another. I’ve got a lot to digest.”

Your testimonials

Mongolia

Solo travel isn’t lonely travel

Working closely with our local partners and experts on the ground, we were able to access people and experiences that you simply can’t plan for yourself. We have worked in Mongolia for years, and it is this local knowledge that helped us to make Chloe’s trip so very full of life.

“Riding camels across deserts, motor biking and horse riding over mountains, speaking with monks and shamans, chasing wolves and wild horses”

Throughout, Chloe had the support and welcome of the local families and our expert guides. In the very heart of a thriving community in one of the most beautiful places on earth, she travelled solo – but was not alone.

An example trip

Don’t just take it from us – here’s what some of our other solo travellers had to say

Responsive and reassuring.

This was the second time I had the opportunity to travel with Black Tomato and I can say without hesitation that I will be doing it again as soon as I have the chance. From the moment I made the initial phone call through to just before departing, they were professional, responsive, and reassuring,

The trip of a lifetime

Working with James at Black Tomato was truly one of the best experiences. He made sure I had a the trip of a lifetime in India and especially since I was traveling  alone , it was so comforting to know I could contact him anytime.

Solo Travel Isn't What it Used to Be

A growing number of solo travelers are opting to stay at all-inclusive resorts. But the majority of all-inclusive hotels target families and couples, overlooking single travelers who also seek an easy getaway. And by single, we don't only mean unpartnered people who are hoping to meet somebody on vacation. We also mean partnered people who prefer a trip alone, as well as unattached people who don't want to meet someone. To that end we've rounded up some of the most welcoming all-inclusive hotels for single travelers in 2020, factoring in those that either waive the single supplement, throw mixer events, or welcome and respect solo guests in other ways.

Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives

Sure, the Maldives are a popular honeymoon destination. But that shouldn’t discourage solo travelers from experiencing the region’s famed resorts. If you’re going to splurge, Gili Lankanfushi delivers a five-star experience (including butler service) without the pretension. In important news, the sustainable island resort will be reopening in December 2019 following a fire last January that destroyed seven overwater villas and one restaurant. Redesigned villa interiors are among the improvements, featuring locally made furniture and rooftop beds that encourage sleeping outside. Expect new programming as well, with packages specializing in diving or a surfing-and-spa combo. Meanwhile, the 45-villa, family-friendly property provides enough amenities and activities for solo guests, from daily yoga and watersports to three dining options and an overwater bar. Even better, the solo package is still available, offering a 25-percent discount off villas, plus a complimentary spa treatment, sunset sail, snorkeling trip and cooking class. Oh, and it also covers a candlelit dinner on the beach, because who says two people get to have all the fun?

BOOK NOW: Gili Lankanfushi Maldives | Booking.com, Starting at $1624/night

Bungalows Key Largo, Florida

The Florida Keys’ first all-inclusive hotel opened at the end of 2018, enjoying a short run before a major fire shut it down in spring 2019 (2018 was not a good year for hotel fires). But the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo has re-emerged, with a planned opening on Dec. 19, 2019. Heads up that single guests are expected to pay full room rates based on two people during peak months. However, single rates apply in September, October and November, when it’s possible to pay $150 less — depending on availability. Either way, even entry-level waterfront bungalows are spacious, with 900 square feet of creature comforts and an outdoor soaking tub. Beyond the rooms, the 12-acre property contains a beach, two pools, three dining and three bar options, spa and fitness center. All-inclusive rates cover morning yoga, watersports, alcohol, happy hours, cooking classes, fish fries and floating tiki boats, the latter being a good way to meet others while enjoying drinks, if that’s your thing. If not, embrace “me time” in the low-key, Key West environs.

BOOK NOW: Bungalows Key Largo | Booking.com, Starting at $2798/night

Club Med Turkoise, Turks and Caicos

Club Med became synonymous with the singles scene not long after the brand launched in the ‘50s. Ironically, only a handful of today’s 60-plus locations are geared toward single adults. Among them is Club Med Turkoise on Turks and Caicos, which excels in this category. The all-inclusive price includes endless activities, from the flying trapeze to sailing lessons. When in doubt, much of the action centers around the new infinity pool, where it’s also possible to join in a water polo match or aquatic classes. Once the sun sets, dancing, shows and theme nights encourage continued socializing, as does the redesigned outdoor bar. (Open bar is included in the all-inclusive price — hello, new friends!) Choose one of the newly renovated deluxe ocean-view rooms in which to recover from all the fun you’re having. Surprisingly, Club Med does charge a single supplement, but bypass it with this Your Sale, Your Way package . Hot tip: Eco-friendly Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda will be opening Nov. 23 in Miches, Dominican Republic; it will be the first resort in underdeveloped Miches. The DR location is also the newest North American property from Club Med in 25 years — and it will include a dedicated adults-only section.

Glacier View Lodge, Canada

If your idea of a solo all-inclusive don’t involve warm weather or Spring Break-esque hotel parties, then the newly renovated Glacier View Lodge could be a good fit. It’s considered the only Canadian resort with glacier views, since it overlooks the Athabasca Glacier — part of the Columbia Icefield in the Canadian Rockies. A two-day, all-inclusive package (minus lunch) includes a private tour to the glacier, followed by a three-course dinner overlooking it, along with a trip to the Columbia Icefield Skywalk , a glass-floor viewing platform more than 900 feet above Sunwapta Canyon. Beyond the group outings, a welcome champagne reception at the cozy hotel also provides an easy way to meet other guests. Note: The hotel is closed for the season, but will reopen June through October.

BodyHoliday, St. Lucia

Beeline to the beachfront BodyHoliday in St. Lucia when you crave a wellness holiday that doesn’t involve calorie restrictions and a heavy dose of spirituality. Here, you’ll find other wellness-seekers who come for the spa treatments and multiple activities offered every hour between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. But this isn’t a boot camp, so there’s no obligation to partake in more than you wish. Yet the ever-changing schedule provides serious FOMO, where a sample day tempts with numerous watersports (windsurfing, scuba diving, wakeboarding), fitness classes (yoga, pilates, spin) and outdoor activities (tennis, running, archery). All-inclusive rates provide one spa treatment a day, which may be necessary after all the physical exertion, with the choice of a massage, facial or body wrap. (More than a dozen Ayurvedic treatment are also available for an extra fee.) Also included? Meals at one of five restaurants and drinks at two bars.

Heads up: While BodyHoliday is adults-only most of the year, it does allow children over 12 during the summer, plus Easter and Christmas breaks.

Temptation Cancun Resort, Mexico

Singles who want to relive their Spring Break trips (or who never got to experience them), can do so at Temptation Cancun Resort , where the minimum age is 21. Famed designer Karim Rashid renovated the hotel in 2017, giving it a colorful, playful vibe — the perfect backdrop for non-stop partying. Needless to say, the resort isn’t geared toward the shy, between its (optional) topless pool, beach, jacuzzi and more areas, and theme parties (e.g. angels and devils) that encourage sexy costumes. As with many all-inclusives, don’t be surprised to find that couples outnumber solo guests, but it’s not difficult to meet others at nightspot Bash or one of the five bars. There are also scheduled activities throughout the day that fall under the “What happens at Temptation... .” The resort is, after all, billed as an adult playground.

BOOK NOW: Temptation Cancun Resort | Expedia, Starting at $263/night

Singita Boulders Lodge, Africa

Singita Boulders Lodge enjoys a prime location in South Africa’s private Sabi Sands Game Reserve next to Kruger National Park, with plentiful opportunities for Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo) viewing. Even better, solo guests can stay here without paying the single supplement commonly charged at other safari camps, and there’s a no-children-under-10 policy. Enjoy a communal environment since there are only 12 suites, and get to know the other guests during days filled with game drives and guided safari walks. Alternatively, enjoy quiet downtime at the pool, fitness center or spa. But what’s most likely to occupy your free time is the dedicated photo area, where you can edit photos in Lightroom or Photoshop on a 27-inch iMac with Retina display, then transfer photos to a provided flash drive with 8GB of memory. It’s even possible to book private post-production sessions for an extra fee. Also extra, but Singita rents professional-grade cameras and lenses (Canon and Nikon), a major plus for anyone familiar with how cumbersome it is to lug a telephoto lens on vacation.

Belizean Dreams Resort, Belize

Belizean Dreams Resort works if you prefer a less corporate, more low-key resort experience, with days spent drinking on the beach and optional off-site activities. While all-inclusive isn’t mandatory here, it’s a popular option, and solo guests have three all-inclusive packages to choose from: The Just Chillin’ option is all about downtime at the resort; Mayan Jungle and Beach bundles in tours (Mayan ruins, Belize Barrier Reef); and Inland and Island , adds a stay at sister property Coco Plum Island Resort . All packages include meals and drinks (only local alcohol) at the restaurant and beach bar, along with bikes, kayaks and snorkeling gear. Spa services and dive trips are available for a fee.

As a caveat, while the resort does offer the aforementioned options under the single/solo package , it also charges a $75 per night fee for traveling while single. And yes, children are allowed, but Belizean Dreams' welcoming community feel also benefits solo guests.

Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos, Mexico

Navigate families and couples in order to take advantage of the amenities at the brand-new Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos on Mexico's Baja Peninsula. This include five pools, eight restaurants, three lounges, a 30,000-square-foot spa with a hydrotherapy center (one daily treatment is included with a limitless package ), 4,000-square-foot gym with daily fitness classes and a bowling alley. Oh, and how could we forget the adults-only nightclub, Heaven? Arguably the most unique amenity is the music program, allowing guests to either rock out on a Fender guitar in their room, borrow a record player and records, or download a curated playlist. All of this is included in the regular all-inclusive package, along with evening entertainment, open bar and fun activities like the foam pool party. The aforementioned limitless package also includes local tours, tequila and wine tastings and a photo package.

BOOK NOW: Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos | Expedia, Starting at $570/night

Golden Door, California

Celebrity-favorite Golden Door in San Marcos, California is the epitome of spa retreats, and while a week here runs about $10,000 (feel free to re-read that), it does provide a personalized experience that will make you forget you’re there alone. Unlike other spa retreats that offer pampering and wellness activities, the Golden Door experience is described as transformative. The journey begins before you arrive with a wellness assessment, which helps to create your customized itinerary. A sample day might involve a sunrise hike followed by breakfast awaiting you in your room, along with your daily itinerary detailing the day’s fitness classes (there are more than 40 options, including personal training sessions if you wish) and spa treatments (five skincare treatments, two herbal wraps and a mani/pedi are among the spa services included in the price). In this all-inclusive environment practically everything is provided for you, since you’ll even find the workout clothes you’ll need for the day in the closet. Just when it seems like it can’t get any better, it does with your massage therapist waiting to deliver your daily, in-room massage. Consider Golden Door the ultimate gift to give yourself.

Papaya Playa Project, Tulum, Mexico

Tulum is the perfect place to wonder aimlessly, bump into strangers, and make new friends, and Papaya Playa Project is ground zero for solo travelers. A self-proclaimed “communal playground for the creative community,” Papaya benefits from prime beachfront real estate and a never-ending roster of things to do, from yoga and meditation sessions to DJ sets, concerts, and readings in an amphitheater. Our favorite feature, however, might be its standalone bungalows that stretch nearly half a mile down a white sand beach and 13 acres of lush jungle.

Maderas Village, Playa Maderas, Nicaragua

Deep in the jungle hills of Nicaragua, you'll find one of the world's first hipster-meets-backpacker, community-centric resorts. At Maderas Village you can spend your days a variety of ways—surfing, napping in a hammock, hiking, reading—and when you feel like being social there are daily group yoga sessions, family-style meals, and even communal sleeping facilities (thatched-roof casitas and bungalows) if that's your thing.

The Asbury Hotel, Asbury Park, New Jersey

The Jersey Shore has come a long way since its MTV glory days, when eight local twenty-somethings were rocketed into reality TV stardom. Case in point: The Asbury Hotel , a next-gen sleep (and the area's first hotel in half a century) that's squashing the Shore's seedy reputation. The ground-floor lounge doubles as a rec room, with ping-pong, pinball, board games, and a communal table for meals. There's also an adjacent music library where guests can play records on a turn table and a "beer garden," along with a 4,300-square-foot rooftop that transforms into a cinema when the sun goes down.

La Granja, Ibiza, Spain

It’s time to rethink Ibiza’s reputation as an all-night party destination for rich, yacht-owning entourages. That's what Claus Sendlinger did. Instead of setting up shop on one of the island's rollicking golden beaches, he headed to the country to open La Granja. Pared down and rustic, the centuries-old stone farmhouse is now a nine-bedroom retreat where likeminded guests interested in slowing down come to commune with nature. We especially love the hotel's "rituals" series—sessions on communal farming, health eating, yoga, and more.

The Surf Lodge, Montauk, New York

It’s a different kind of communal vibe at the Surf Lodge —more the see-and-be-seen type—but it’s a still a place you can fly solo. The Hamptons mainstay has reached near iconic status, thanks to its live music and late-night dance parties, celebrity sightings and boho-chic interiors. During the day, you'll find the pretty people slurping oysters at the hotel restaurant, taking a yoga class, or sunbathing on the deck. The night scene is mostly the same, so saddle up at the bar or find a cozy spot by the bonfire, stick your toes in the sand, and meet somebody.

Green Rooms, London

Green Rooms , in up-and-coming Wood Green, is all about community, a place for artists, musicians and entrepreneurs to mingle and get inspired. There's a third-floor gallery that displays rotating works of art, a performance space for rising local talents, and numerous co-working nooks. As for the rooms, they're stylishly spare, with blond wood furnishings and simple bedding. Don't miss the on-site restaurant where a cast of budding chefs test our their recipes on guests.

El Cosmico, Marfa, Texas

Texan hotelier Liz Lambert is queen of creating hotel experiences perfect for the boho solo traveler. In the vast desert plains of artsy Marfa, Texas, El Cosmico is a nomadic campground of trailers, teepees, yurts, and tents that offer a glorious, no-frills stay. During the day, there are workshops on building and design, cooking, botany, music and more (plus, the town of Marfa is a short drive away). At night, guests gather at the outdoor stage or around the campfire to sing songs, drink cocktails, and count shooting stars.

Top 5 All-Inclusive Resorts For Solo Travelers

Whether it's to disconnect or meet new people, there are a handful of all-inclusive resorts based on your solo travel needs.

solo travel luxury resort

All- inclsuive resorts will never go out of style. For travelers craving a stress-free vacation with everything at their fingertips, including meals, activities, and entertainment, all-inclusive resorts provide the fun and more. Unfortunately, the industry is slow in responding to the fact that more people are traveling alone and also want luxurious amenities such as an all-inclusive experience.

Luckily, there are some resorts and experiences that understand the need for traveling alone. Whether it’s to disconnect, meet new people, or challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone, there are a handful of all-inclusive resorts based on your solo travel needs. Many hotels and resorts charge what’s known as a “single occupancy fee.” In other words, solo travelers pay a higher rate for traveling alone.

Travel Noire compiled a list of the five best all-inclusive resorts for solo travelers and what to do while there.

The BodyHoliday in Saint Lucia

Solo travelers looking for a wellness getaway will find that The BodyHoliday in St. Lucia is the perfect fit.  The resort centers its guests’ experience around wellness. The resort takes pride not only in its highly-trained staff but also in its amenities and offers. The BodyHoliday is home to Pavitra, the only genuine Ayurvedic temple in Saint Lucia. Other services at the wellness center include an extensive range of services to enhance natural beauty with facials. Therapeutic care at the spa includes massages, Thalassotherapy, and infrared therapy.

For physical and mental health, the resort combines Eastern practices with Western science by offering Tai Chi, meditation, BodyYoga, and more.

Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa

If the goals include endless fun and entertainment, the all-adult-inclusive Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa is the best option for solo travelers. The resort offers the best of worlds: fun and relaxation.

Whether it’s a day party or spending the evening out, the resort hosts theme parties and social events to meet other travelers. There are tequila tastings on the property, events to shop with local artists, and live music. For travelers looking to experience ultimate self-care, Spa by Pevonia offers exclusive hot stone massages and face and body treatments with a bar to complement the experience.

Lido Beach Resort in Sarasota, Florida

For solo travelers looking for a quick getaway that doesn’t require a passport, Lido Beach Resort in Sarasota, Florida, is the perfect option.

Lido Beach Resort is located in an exclusive and secluded location on the powdery sands of Lido Key, which consistently ranks as a top destination for beach lovers. Lido Key is a barrier island off the coast of Sarasota. It offers plenty to do for nature lovers, from biking along the paths to kayaking, relaxing on the beach, and more.

Solo travelers in need of a quick two-to three-day reset will find consolation at Lido Beach Resort, where there are year-round heated pools, adults-only spaces, fine dining, and access to various activities for every traveler type, from those who crave relaxation and those who want some adventure.

SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa in Thailand

This stunning beach resort proves that solo travelers can indulge in luxury alone. Located in Southern Thailand, SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa offers luxurious pool suites and villas for solo travelers who want to wake up to the beach each day.

As a haven for rest and reconnecting, the resort offers plenty of activities to achieve just that. Its SALA Active program allows guests to participate in daily classes. On the property’s white, sandy beachfront sits a beach with plenty of sun loungers, beanbag chairs, and daybeds to relax in the sun. Other activities on-site include a cooking class and its special spa retreat package.

Virgin Voyages: Cruises

While it may not technically be a resort, Virgin Voyages offers all-inclusive cruises that are perfect for solo travelers. Ranked as one of the best cruises for solo travelers, Virgin Voyages recognizes that solo travelers are on a journey of self-discovery and looking to reconnect with themselves. Cruise leaders have created an atmosphere for solo travelers to meet people, enjoy activities they’re interested in, and relax.

Virgin Voyages Insider and Sea Cabin s are for people traveling solo on its adult-exclusive cruises.

With both wellness travel and solo travel on the rise , it’s no surprise that solo wellness retreats are growing in popularity. Traveling alone in a way that benefits your physical and mental health is easy — with no one else in tow, you’re able to fully focus on yourself and your needs and travel exactly how you like. This article explains what a solo wellness retreat is, why you should consider going on one, and some of the best wellness retreats for solo travelers in the U.S.

A solo retreat is a trip where you travel alone and stay somewhere or do activities that offer positive benefits for your physical or emotional health . Wellness solo retreats can be specific resorts that offer retreats or wellness-focused activities. Activities can include fitness, yoga, meditation, self-discovery workshops, breathwork, spa treatments, or outdoor experiences. Most retreats don’t have an official rule that you have to be alone, but all of the retreats on our list are especially welcoming or cater to solo travelers.

Going on a wellness retreat alone means that you can interpret and manifest wellness in whatever way you’d like . If wellness means hiking in the wilderness to you, your solo retreat can give you time to hike as much as you’d like and focus on your specific wellness needs without interruption.

Taking time to focus on yourself also allows for self-care in whatever way best serves you while you travel exactly how you like. When everything is organized your way, and you aren’t cutting your needs short to meet others’ needs, then relaxation, rejuvenation, and even healing can result. Solo wellness travel can increase your self-awareness and help you set goals for the future, encourage personal growth, improve confidence, and boost independence. It may also invigorate you to challenge yourself or try new things in a judgment-free space.

Great Resorts for the Solo Traveler

L'Auberge de Sedona

Sometimes, the best trip is the one you take with yourself. When you're traveling solo, you get to explore a destination on your own terms with no compromise -- and to fully engage with the destination. Here are just six places that we think are great for one.

For Seclusion: Selva Negra Ecolodge  (Nicaragua) If you’re looking for utter peace and quiet -- and don’t want to break the bank -- venture into the mountains of Nicaragua. Selva Negra Ecolodge, set in the country’s Matagalpa region (about a two-hour drive from Granada) has rates as low as $64 per night. On property, wind through more than 12 miles of trails and find solace among the 200-plus species of birds, the howler monkeys, and other creatures that inhabit the cloud forest. Alternatively, join a nature tour, coffee farm tour, sustainable farm tour, and a night tour when you feel up to a little human interaction.

For Foodies: Tuscookany Cooking Vacations  (Tuscany, Italy) Tuscany is a classic destination for foodie travelers. We love the way Tuscookany Cooking Vacations melds expert culinary instruction with luxury, all-inclusive villa retreats. Native Italian chefs will teach you (in English) to cook authentic Italian and Mediterranean dishes, in a way that feels like you're in your friend's kitchen rather than a formal, impersonal class. Each program includes a full-day culinary excursion in the countryside, plus one less on each of the remaining days. You'll have time, too, to lounge in your villa, take a dip into the pool, go hiking, and do some sightseeing of your own.

For the Spiritual: L’Auberge de Sedona (Sedona, AZ) While you'll find lots of couples at this gorgeous property, there's no place like Sedona to get in touch with your spiritual side. With vortexes sprinkled all around and mystic energy winding all throughout town, it's the place for spiritual travelers to reflect and meditate without the pesky companions. While you're here, morning yoga, duck feedings, astronomy sessions, geology lectures, and more are all covered. The onsite spa and restaurant are top notch, and it's also just a short walk to town for galleries, shops, more restaurants, and, yes, psychic readings.

For an All-Inclusive Experience: Sandos Caracol Eco Resort (Riviera Maya, Mexico) Centered in the Mayan jungle with more than 60 animal species and 25 tree species, this property embraces its natural environment and invites travelers to do the same. For days, you’ll be able to bike, hike, or sail among the resort's jungle, cenote springs, and mangrove path. And, after deer encounters in a natural jungle habitat, a trip to the bird sanctuary, or a admire freshwater turtles in the lagoons. The all-inclusive rate covers all meals, drinks, and activities. We found rates from $166 per night, depending on the season.

For Making Friends: Castlemartyr Resort  (Cork, Ireland)

Anyone can travel solo to Ireland and make new friends over a pint of Guinness. While Dublin is a lively city with endless sights and great food, you'll find beautiful landscapes of green hills -- ripe for exploring via bicycle or drive by -- in Cork. The luxury  Castlemartyr Resort makes a great home base. It's a reasonable price, too: we found rates as low as $190 per night. For an additional fee, there's horse riding, fishing and flycasting, archery, and laser shooting, all on-site.

Solo Luxury Travel: Best Caribbean Islands for Solo Travellers

solo travel luxury resort

Maybe it's the current climate, or maybe it's the fact I'm the mother to young children, but nothing sounds better to me right now than some solo luxury travel. The idea of disappearing to the Caribbean for some luxury travel ALL ON MY OWN, phew, yes, please! Unfortunately that's not on the cards anytime soon for me, or for many of us, but that doesn't stop us indulging our wanderlust and maybe thinking about where we want to go most in the world.

If this is the Caribbean, and if you are a solo traveller, this guest post by Christine from Exploring Caribbean , all about the best Caribbean islands for solo travellers and other tips for solo Caribbean travel, is one to read and bookmark. I've never actually been to the Caribbean, yet, but I really do hope to one day and maybe, just maybe, I will make that journey as a solo traveller!

As with any travel to the Caribbean, it's important to make a small note about the history of the region and specifically the role of colonialism and imperialism in shaping its path to the modern day. I say this so that you can be mindful about how you spend your money in the Caribbean - perhaps choosing to stay in locally-owned resorts, guest houses or hotels, rather than giant hotel chains owned elsewhere.

I would also encourage you to research the history of whichever Caribbean destination you choose, so that you can understand the impact of colonialism and slavery there, and maybe think about what you can do and how you can travel there with the most positive impact on the local people, culture, traditions, and economy.

Now, time to hand you over to Christine!

The Best Caribbean Islands for Solo Travellers

solo travel luxury resort

The Caribbean is often associated with a honeymoon trip with a partner and cruises with family and friends. But time has changed and a Caribbean getaway is now even more common among solo travelers.

Safety can sometimes be a concern, especially for women travelling alone and in recent years, events in some countries in the Caribbean have led some people to believe that it is not safe to travel solo in the Caribbean. However, this is more a sign of poor, biased media and reporting, and it's important to remember that crimes occur all over the world, all the time, even in the "so-called" safest countries in the world.

As someone who had been to over 50 countries solo, and for someone who used to live in the Caribbean, I can say that generally speaking, the region is very safe. But as a rule of thumb, even when embarking on some solo luxury travel always bring your common sense with you.

That said, it's true that in this list of the best Caribbean islands for solo travellers, I am taking safety into consideration, especially for female, non-binary and queer travellers. But there is so much more to what I think makes a Caribbean country a fantastic and worthy destination for some luxury solo travel.

The Caribbean countries on this list are also good for meeting other people to socialize with, have beautiful natural beauty to explore and enjoy, they have plenty of fun activities for single or solo travelers, and there are ample options for singles or adults-only accommodation. They are also Caribbean islands that are easily accessible, have great infrastructure and reliability for solo travel, and because we are talking about the Caribbean - they also have the all essential amazing beaches too!

So if you prefer to travel solo and looking for a safe and fun Caribbean destination to travel to, here’s my list of the best countries in the Caribbean for solo travelers.

1.Cayman Islands

solo travel luxury resort

The Cayman Islands has something of a reputation as a tax haven for the world’s elite, but it is also a very safe and interesting country for solo travelers. Yes, the Cayman Islands enjoy a relatively low crime rate but they also have much in the form of natural beauty, including endless white-sand beaches, amazing rock formations and caves, and plenty of opportunities for scuba diving and other water sports.

There are countless luxury resorts that are ideal for singles or solo travellers, but this is also an island that doesn't only cater to luxury solo travel - backpackers can find many options and affordable hotels too.

And if it's what you're looking for, the capital George Town has an active nightlife with nightclubs and nice bars serving award-winning cocktails, and serves as a launch pad for many of the region's best diving spots.

These are the places I think you should visit if you fancy a solo trip to Cayman Islands.

  • Seven Mile Beach
  • Starfish Point
  • Cayman Crystal Caves
  • Devil’s Grotto, Eden’s Rock, and Bloody Bay Marine Park for divers
  • Hell in Grand Cayman

2.Turks and Caicos

solo travel luxury resort

Turks and Caicos is one of the most enchanting Caribbean destinations and is popular with families, couples and solo travellers alike. It has a variety of picture-perfect landscapes, those dreamy white-sand beaches you go to the Caribbean for, marine and wildlife you don't see just anywhere and lots of history to absorb too.

There are also plenty of singles- or adults-only resorts to choose from making it a great choice for both luxury solo travel or for those sticking to a budget. It's also not one of the busiest Caribbean countries in terms of visitor numbers so you should think about heading to Turks & Caicos if you want to avoid crowds.

Places to visit:

  • Providenciales for Grace Bay and Smith's Reef
  • Her Majesty's Prison - a historical and the only prison on the island
  • South Caicos for diving and less crowded beaches
  • Flamingo Pond

3. St. Lucia

solo travel luxury resort

St. Lucia is often regarded as the most beautiful island in the Caribbean. A lot of people think that St. Lucia is more of a honeymooners’ place and an expensive place to travel but you can also do it on a budget and more and more solo travellers are going to this memorable Caribbean island nation these days.

A popular stop for cruise ships, the island is also the ideal getaway for beach-combers, nature lovers, and adventurous solo travelers, as there are lots of mountain treks, jungle walks, and yes, again lots of water sports to enjoy. From a walk along with quaint villages to a trek up rugged mountains giving you spectacular views, St. Lucia really does have something for everyone.

You can also expect those classically-Caribbean stunning beaches, and if you want to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of St Lucia, many quaint villages with markets and history to explore.

Places I recommend you visit in St Lucia:

  • Anse Chastanet Marine National Park
  • Marigot Bay
  • The Piton Mountains
  • Tet Paul Nature Trail
  • The Soufrière village
  • Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens, Waterfall & Mineral Bath
  • Pigeon Island National Park

solo travel luxury resort

Known for its pristine beaches, stunning desert landscapes, and among the best wreck diving sites in the Caribbean, Aruba gives off an impression that it can only be enjoyed by those who are on their expensive honeymoon or a luxury family holiday of a lifetime. However, this country located north of Venezuela is also a haven for solo and budget travellers.

With its year-long fine weather, the picturesque-capital of Oranjestad, the easily accessible beaches in the north, and the rough and dramatic vistas of the east coast, you will never run out of things to do and places to explore on the island of Aruba, even if you only have your camera with you for a companion, and all you want to do is go and see the famous Flamingo Beach.

Aruba is possibly best for a relaxing but beautiful solo trip, thanks to its pristine beaches and stunning desert landscapes, but you can still get some thrills if you go diving there, which is also one of the best ways to meet other solo travellers in the Caribbean.

The places I recommend you visit on Aruba include:

  • Fort Zoutman
  • The Parliament Building
  • National Archaeological Museum in the island’s capital, Oranjestad.
  • Public beaches such as Renaissance Beach and Surfside Beach.
  • Beyond the beach, Aruba’s natural wonders such as the Arashi dunes and conical Hooiberg peak.

Situated in the southern Caribbean Sea, like Aruba, Curaçao is a Dutch territory. It is also an excellent place to visit and explore for solo travellers in the Caribbean. Explore the colourful capital Willemstad, and then relax on one of the island's paradise beaches where you can swim in sparkling clear waters. Or dive in deeper - pun intended - and experience its rich marine life by diving or snorkelling. The weather is consistently warm and sunny in Curacao, perfect for lounging at the beach or walking around town.

Apart from its idyllic beaches, Curaçao is also known for the distinct European-vibe of some of its attractions, like the colorful buildings that will remind you of Amsterdam, and a selection of interesting museums in its charming capital. It's a popular choice with Dutch travellers - for obvious reasons - but you can expect to meet other solo or single travellers on Curaçao and also enjoy a full range of accommodation from luxury resorts to budget-friendly hotels and even hostels.

Make sure you check out the following places on Curaçao:

  • The island’s capital Willemstad features Dutch colonial architecture and the museums, shops, and cafes in the historic areas Punda and Pietermaai
  • Museum Kura Hulanda’s art and sculpture garden.
  • Christoffel National Park
  • Mount Christoffel
  • Shete Boka National Park
  • Public beaches like Mambo and Grote Knip

solo travel luxury resort

Grenada is located in the far south of the Caribbean, so is often overlooked for those countries more north, but it is still very easy to travel through a direct flight from North America or other destinations around the world. However, if you're looking for a relaxing solo holiday in the Caribbean and don't like crowded beaches or resorts, Grenada is the best Caribbean island on this list for you.

The island is known for its stunning scenery that hardly ever gets crowded with tourists; the smell of fragrant spices like cloves, nutmeg, and vanilla, as well as the volcanic soil can be detected on island tours or your own explorations, and explain why it's called the Spice Island. Grenada really is the perfect destination for solo travellers who also consider themselves foodies, and you can't go without doing a chocolate tour.

Both unique and authentic, Grenada is the perfect getaway for those who are traveling solo and would like to go off-the-beaten-path in the Caribbean and I recommend you go seek out the following places:

  • Beaches like the popular Grand Anse, and the more secluded La Sagesse Beach,
  • The unique Hog Island
  • The pretty harbor and colorful streets of George’s, Grenada’s capital.
  • The French-built Fort George
  • Market Square for local crafts, fruit, and spices.
  • The 300-year-old Belmont Estate’s 400-acre grounds

Why wait? The world is calling you now!

When it comes to traveling, one of the most stressful parts can be the planning, making sure each member of your family or friend group is in agreement on the itinerary, hotel, spending and more. Want to avoid all of that?

We recommend a solo trip!

Traveling on your own can seem scary, but with the proper preparation and a good head on your shoulders, the world is ready for you to explore it right now. Going it solo, there are a few less things to worry about like a hotel room size (you just need one bed!) and group flights, but there also some nuances to make note of.

That’s why we interviewed a professional solo traveler, who now helps others get outside of their comfort zone and off into the great unknown.

We chatted with Jen Tenzer, founder of The Soloist , a luxury solo travel advisory site with all the tips and tricks you could need when going it alone. She let us in on some insider tips, plus mapped out where the best places to venture solo are, from the Americas to Asia, Europe and beyond.

A man with a backpack exploring a canyon and hiking in southwestern America

What our experts say: “Sedona, Austin, and New York City — These cities are very concentrated and accessible, with tons of activities to keep solo travelers busy. Consider a wellness hotel in Sedona, a foodie walking tour in Austin, or a solo museum visit in NYC,” said Tenzer.

What our editors say: What can I say — since New York City is on the expert list and I totally agree. As cliché as it may be, the Big Apple has endless options for solo travelers, from watching a Broadway show to seeing landmarks or just exploring the many museums and parks the five boroughs have to offer.

Sedona, Arizona: If you’re in need of a wellness moment, go it solo to the southwest and head to Sedona, Arizona. For an actual retreat, check out the Sedona Mago Center for a SunTao spa. If you prefer solo excursions, head here for hikes and tours to do solo.

Austin, Texas: For a true blue Texas trip, consider going alone to Austin. This is the best place to catch a live show and vibe with likeminded people, or, as our expert recommended, join a food tour and leave full of BBQ and great memories.

New York City, New York: What can’t you do in New York? Our expert first recommended a Broadway show, and we couldn’t agree more. Find tickets here and then plan the rest of your trip, with tours designed for solo travelers like you.

Couple dressed in ponchos watching the ruins of Machu Picchu

What our experts say: “Costa Rica and Peru — Same as above! These destinations are safe for solo travelers, have a well-established tourism infrastructure, and most people interacting with tourists will speak English,” said Tenzer. “I love the idea of a wellness-focused surf and yoga retreat in Costa Rica or joining a group trek to Machu Picchu!”

What our editors say: I need to add Brazil to this list, since I did take a trip there myself. For a more friendly and party atmosphere where you are bound to meet other backpackers and solo travelers, Rio de Janeiro would be a great home base. I also took a solo trip into the Amazon Rainforest, which was a crazy adventure, but when done right, was a life-changing and introspective trip to do on my own.

Costa Rica: Per our expert, unwind and relax with a yoga retreat, staying at the Pura Vida Retreat & Spa . You can also book surf lessons to stay active or book a multi-day tour here so you don’t have to make your own itinerary.

Peru: Machu Picchu is a top bucket list destination for many, so why wait for a group to go? Instead, join an EF tour that also takes you to Lima and Cuzco, and even the Amazon Rainforest should you opt to extend. If you’d rather explore on your own, book a highly-rated hostel for budget lodging, sorted by city.

Brazil: Brazil is a huge country, so we advise you to pick a few places or spend a long time exploring. For a true cultural explosion, Rio is the place to be and you can take daily tours of Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf Mountain and more. For the more adventurous, take a flight to Manaus and enter the Amazon Rainforest. We did it in spring 2022 and took our tour here.

Female tourist visiting beautiful town in Cinque Terre coast, Italy

What our experts say: “England, Portugal, Italy… I could go on and on! European cities in general make for perfect for solo trips because everything is walkable, there’s tons of activities to keep you busy, and the expansive European train network makes it easy to transfer between cities,” said Tenzer.

What our editors say: I added two countries to our expert list: Spain and Switzerland. Spain is a great one to tack on to the end of any European adventure, as it is super closely connected to Portugal and Italy from the list. You can go from the northern Basque country to the south of Valencia and see a huge range of culture, food and architecture in just one country.

England: To start, flights from the US to England aren’t too hard to find, and savvy travelers can use Skyscanner to find the best deals. Once you’ve arrived, rent a cottage for a relaxing stay in a town of your choice or head into the thick of it and go to London for a full itinerary of solo things to see and do.

Portugal: Portugal is a great country to explore solo, with Lisbon and Porto as standouts for a great combo of nature and city life. If you like to be solo but also experience a place as the locals do, consider a tour or activity with a local guide , like a cooking class or a walking tour.

Italy: Italy may seem like a place of romance, but it can also be a place of self-love for the solo traveler. Use the railroads to book trains throughout the country so you can see it all, from Rome to Florence to Venice and beyond to see the country for yourself. You can also book a solo tour through EF and not worry about making your own itinerary.

Spain: Architecture, food and culture blend seamlessly together in Spain. See it for yourself, with a trip through the country. We personally started in Barcelona and then headed to Madrid and Valencia, all via train or bus. Then load your days with museums, walking tours or even dance classes to fully immerse yourself in the Spanish lifestyle.

Bali, Indonesia, traveler on tree house at Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida Island.

What our experts say: “Thailand, Bali, and Vietnam — These destinations are safe for solo travelers, have a well-established tourism infrastructure, and most people interacting with tourists will speak English. There’s so much to see and explore here,” said Tenzer.

What our editors say: I have to agree 100% with Thailand, as I lived there on my own for six months. The country is easy to explore via public transit, cabs and even short flights, inexpensive to travel in and has some of the best food, nature and culture I have been exposed to.

Thailand: What can I say about Thailand? I personally lived there for six months and still never ran out of things to do alone, and also ran into plenty of other solo travelers and backpackers throughout the country. If you want some guidance, consider a tour with an itinerary. If not, be sure to keep your wits about you and make sure to visit Bangkok , with a trip north to Chiang Mai and a trip south to the islands of Krabi or Phuket for the full Thailand picture.

Bali, Indonesia: Once you’ve booked your ticket to Bali, the rest of the trip is all about relaxing, unwinding and taking in the incredible nature. It is also a surfing hot spot, should you like to take a lesson from just $14. Bali is also famous for yoga, so why not stay at a spa and yoga retreat to charge up for your next adventure?

Vietnam: There are plenty of things to do in Vietnam, making it another hot spot for backpackers and solo travelers who want to explore Asia . Built on the water, be sure to take some tours down Halong Bay and the Mekong River, or take an island day trip to get all the sun and sand you need.

"Eastern Caribbean Sea - February 8, 2010: A luxury cruise ship anchors in the water as passengers are taken by ferry to the local tropical island for a day of sun and fun."

What our expert says: “Another less-obvious way to travel solo is by joining a group retreat or cruise ! You’re still traveling alone to a new destination and surrounding yourself with strangers, but there’s a comfort in knowing that you’re not  truly  alone in an emergency. It also takes some of the stress out of things when everything is pre-planned for you. Group travel experiences are a great way to tiptoe into solo travel,” said Tenzer.

Solo travel FAQ with an expert:

What is the appeal of traveling alone? “Solo travel offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with your core wants and needs,” said Tenzer. Solo travel enables you to explore wherever and whenever you want, stick to a tight budget or truly treat yourself and fill your days with whatever activities light you up! It’s a newfound freedom that allows you to return from vacation actually refreshed.  You’ll return re-motivated to show up for everyone in your life as your best self!”

What are some benefits of solo travel? “Solo travel is incredibly empowering,” said Tenzer. “You don’t know how capable you truly are until you’ve pushed yourself beyond your comfort zone. Solo trips always come with the added benefit of a self-confidence boost. Solo travel is also a fantastic way to meet like-minded new friends. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but I’ve met infinitely more people traveling solo than when traveling with a companion.”

Who should solo travel? “There’s a bit of cliché around solo travel; that it’s best suited for 20-something single backpackers on a gap year,” said Tenzer. “In reality, there are all sorts of reasons why someone may choose to travel alone: A major life transition like a breakup, career change or the loss of a loved one. Maybe they’re feeling burnt out and craving a personal recharge, or maybe they’re just sick of waiting for other people’s travel schedules and budgets to perfectly align. I’ve had solo travel clients in their 20s and in their 70s. The common tie amongst solo travelers isn’t a certain demographic, it’s a certain state of mind — ready to shake things up and have an adventure.”

How long do I need to solo travel for? “Solo travel doesn’t have to mean an intimidating 2-week trip to some far flung destination. The same solo travel benefits can be obtained from a weekend away to a nearby city you’ve always wanted to explore,” said Tenzer. “I always recommend starting small in your own city. Try visiting a museum on your own or dining out alone. Or, if you’re traveling with family, maybe you spend some time alone during the day and meet up with everyone else at dinner.”

When choosing lodging, what are some tips and tricks for solo travelers? “It’s important to pick a hotel that’s centrally-located in the heart of your destination,” suggested Tenzer. “This is not the time to pick a budget hotel located outside the city in a remote area. Ideally, your hotel is walkable to all of the major sights and attractions, so that you have the freedom to come and go as you please without being reliant on taxis. I also don’t recommend Airbnb’s for a first big solo trip, and prefer the support and safety that comes from a front desk staff who can help in a pinch.

16 Best Hotels in Tulum, From Luxury Resorts to Beach Bungalows

By Michaela Trimble

outdoor pool area. checkered floor. lounge chairs and sun umbrellas. palm trees

Once awash with sand-floor smoothie bars and relaxed, palapa-style hotels spread amidst the palms, Tulum’s reputation as a sleepy seaside village no longer stands. Akin to the trajectory of its northern neighbor, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, located in Mexico's Quintana Roo state , has grown into a veritable town with development showing no signs of slowing. Now, its dirt paths are paved, and its beach entrance is flanked by side roads leading to all kinds of hospitality concepts, with properties extending their reaches into the jungle behind the town’s famed beach road.

Big, luxury hotel names have officially entered the space, with Conrad Tulum staking its claim with luxury suites situated around five pools and 11 on-site restaurants. Then there’s the more far-flung outpost by Mexican-owned hospitality group Chablé , a 10-suite boutique retreat at the end of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

Whether you're looking for a posh suite set on the bustling beach road or a tucked-away treehouse amidst the verdant jungle, Tulum offers an ideal stay for every type of traveler. No matter what type of stay you choose, expect to feel at once sedated and mesmerized by the balmy conditions, tropical foliage, and white sand beaches of this Yucatán Peninsula hotspot. Without further delay, these are the 16 best hotels in Tulum.

A hotel room.

La Valise Tulum

Ethereal, white-sand walkways lead to 11 beachfront suites with ocean views at this boutique hotel hideaway, all set within A-frame , palapa-style structures that blend seamlessly with the natural surrounds. In 2022, La Valise Tulum debuted its latest development: 11 additional jungle-facing suites, most with private jungle terraces and outdoor soaking tubs. During a stay, guests can enjoy taking dips in one of three pools, plus everything from cacao ceremonies to bee venom facials at the spa. Organic meals are offered at Nü, which sources many of its fair-trade ingredients from the regenerative farm Mestiza de Indias, designed to preserve ancient Mayan farming techniques.

Outdoor space of a hotel.

Within the Tulum jungle, near the La Valeta residential development, this boutique hotel respite is barefoot sophistication realized. Although each of the property’s 26 villas can be booked as a standalone stay, the hotel is ideal for groups. Each villa offers extensive gardens with semi-outdoor showers immersed in nature, some with private plunge pools , and can be connected to adjacent villas to accommodate families or large groups of friends. At Gaudea, guests can enjoy poolside fresh fruit smoothies by morning and candlelit dinners and mezcal-based cocktails by evening, while the wellness offerings include yoga classes and holistic massages.

Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya Arrow

Though this luxury resort is only located about 13 miles north of Tulum’s downtown near Akumal, it feels a world away. While most Tulum properties are boutique hotels by nature, mostly due to the limited availability of land, this hotel, with its 349 guest rooms, is sprawling. Withn the grounds, guests can spend their time at the cenote-inspired spa or lounging in one of five swimming pools . There are also 11 on-site restaurants and bars, ranging from a sushi bar to a Mediterranean restaurant with small plates inspired by the flavors of southern Spain and North Africa.

A hotel balcony.

Shibari Tulum

Guests of this jungle-side property don’t even have to leave the grounds to immerse themselves in one of Tulum’s most precious natural resources—cenotes, which are natural pools with subterranean limestone cave systems. In fact, this 64-villa property is designed around its very-own cenote, known as Tuuch, which is lined with a swimming pool area replete with beach loungers and hammocks. Japanese and Mayan philosophies merge at this resort. Both Samurai culture and the sensual Japanese art of Shibari, a therapeutic rope-tying technique, are integral to the property, with workshops offered regularly. During a stay, guests are also privy to two on-site shopping boutiques, a cafe, a hot tub bar, as well as a restaurant exclusively open to hotel guests.

The Beach Tulum is an intimate, adults-only oasis that combines a serene escape with easy access to local hot spots for a perfectly balanced Mexican getaway. Located just under two hours from Cancun International Airport, it is nestled snugly in the middle of Tulum’s main hotel zone with the beach and the main strip on either side of the hotel. A blissful retreat filled with private plunge pools and hot tubs—it’s almost as if the whole hotel were a spa—it’s a go-to for guests looking for a harmonious escape from the hotel’s party-centric and lively neighbors. —Taylor Mead

Be Tulum Arrow

A rare boutique property in this resort-heavy area, Be Tulum has a smaller feel and plenty of character. Guests love the outdoor showers and jungle-nestled feel that still keep the beachfront at their feet. Popular for honeymooners and cuisine lovers who enjoy the open-kitchen restaurant, it's a beach club-meets-hotel vibe that embodies Tulum well and has garnered repeat clients, including Traveler readers who landed it a spot on the 2023 Readers' Choice Awards.

Casa Chablé Arrow

Evoking the Tulum of yesteryear, Casa Chablé is stunning in its simplicity. Beyond the entrance of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, located about 22 miles south of Tulum, the property offers travelers the feeling of staying at a private home. Guests first enter through the main villa, which features five guest rooms, each with private balconies. Past a plunge pool shaded by palms, down a white-sand swath, are five standalone oceanfront suites with indoor-outdoor showers and terraces. While on property, guests can enjoy sunset cocktails on the lagoon or a Yucatecan-inspired menu crafted by chef Jorge Vallejo of Quintonil in Mexico City .

Sánara Arrow

This boutique property on the Tulum beach road is barefoot luxury at its finest. Though Sanará’s minimalist beachside suites and villas and jungle-pool compounds are idyllic (some even have private gardens and claw-foot tubs), the real reason most guests stay here is for the property’s Ayurveda-inspired wellness center. Immersive healing programs include massages rooted in Indian healing rituals, yoga classes taught at a beachfront studio, and clean cuisine served at its plant-focused kitchen, the Real Coconut.

Hotel Bardo Arrow

Nestled within the jungle, Hotel Bardo offers contemporary luxury rooted in wellness, with regular rituals like sound healing ceremonies and yoga classes on rotation. Though life at this adults-only hotel is centered around a thatched-roof bar and an outdoor pool lined with sun loungers—guests can meet here every evening, pre-sunset, for an intention-setting ceremony—the rooms steal the show. Each of the loft-style villas features its own private plunge pool and outdoor garden with a hammock made by artisans in the Yucatán Peninsula. Pair that with decorative cotton artworks and ceramics by the Mexican designer Caralarga and you have a contemporary lifestyle destination in the heart of the Mayan jungle.

Olas Tulum Arrow

This tucked-away beach bungalow borders the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve at the very end of the beach road, evoking the Tulum that existed when the property first debuted over a decade ago. There’s no pool or flashy beach club at Olas Tulum, and that’s exactly what makes it so charming. With only eight suites, arriving here feels like you’re visiting the home of a dear friend. Delightfully secluded away from the noise and crowds, the property’s meals are organic and served at a communal table. It’s the type of place where you make genuine connections, both with other guests and the staff.

Tulum Treehouse Arrow

Top creatives in their field gathered to create this secluded, five-room oasis on the jungle side of Tulum’s beach road. Something like a hotel-concept store hybrid, the Tulum Treehouse is a celebration of modern Mexican design. A sleek, minimalist respite, the concrete property is built with artists of all types in mind: Centered around a pool and open-air kitchen (run by Noma alum Edoardo Fiaschi), the guesthouse includes a working studio with an outdoor ceramics kiln for artists in residence and a shop by Xinú, the top Mexican perfumery. During a stay, guests are privy to the property’s diverse programming like weekly talks, live music performances, and craft workshops.

Casa Maya Kaan Arrow

Set within a 10-acre plot of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve along a long stretch of private, white-sand beach, Casa Maya Kaan rises from the jungle like an ancient, secluded paradise. Set well beyond the beach road’s recent developments, a stay here—in either a brick-and-mortar suite or one of nine outdoor bell tents—is centered around wellness. All bookings include a bespoke organic menu according to the group’s dietary preferences, and an extensive catalog of both spa treatments and excursions are available, from a temazcal sweat lodge ceremony to a private boat tour through the Boca Paila Lagoon.

Habitas Tulum Arrow

Upon arrival at Habitas Tulum, guests are whisked behind a stone façade and greeted with a copal cleansing ceremony. This sets the tone for a stay at this spiritual-chic hideout, located at the beginning of Tulum’s beach road. The heartbeat of the hotel is a central lounge area with low-slung seating in the sand and a bar and restaurant offering vegetable-forward Spanish cuisine. The space opens to an oceanfront pool and lounge with one of the only secluded beaches in the area thanks to two natural rock barriers. The safari-style, low-impact suites are simple yet functional, each with a nearly identical design, save some that offer plunge pools while others have jungle or ocean views.

Holistika Arrow

In the heart of the jungle, this boutique hotel and holistic center offer a respite rooted in transformation. Guests of Holistika often eschew the late-night parties on Tulum’s beach road in favor of the property’s vast wellness programming, from kundalini yoga and breathwork classes to cacao ceremonies and sound baths. Each of the 24 guest rooms is peaceful and minimalist, with an added option to stay in a communal bunkhouse known as the Beehive. A stay here is also about gathering, whether at the vegetarian restaurant, Tierra, or by the outdoor fire pit for live music in the evenings.

Hotel Panamera Arrow

If the terra-cotta-and-cream-checkered pool at Hotel Panamera looks familiar that’s because it is—this property was purchased by Mexican entrepreneurs and rebranded from the old Casa Pueblo into a brighter, chicer version of itself. Within the three-story, oceanfront structure are 14 sunlit rooms. With design touches inspired by historic estates of the Caribbean, each room is austere with polished floors, long white corridors, and minimalist furnishings, as the star of the show is the view of the sea. New to the property is a swanky rooftop terrace, known as The Roof, where craft cocktails are paired with seafood dishes categorized by their preparation: raw, grilled, or atop a crispy tostada.

Hotel Esencia Arrow

A luxurious hideaway for the international jet set, Hotel Escencia is set 30 minutes north of Tulum and feels a world away from it all. Once the former home of an Italian duchess, it’s now a thoughtful boutique hotel with three restaurants, two pools, and a spa that overlooks a cenote. Set within a secluded 50-acre estate with flourishing tropical gardens, the property’s focal point is the main house, a three-story building known as Casa Grande, set just steps from 45 suites and three private villas, all with private terraces and some with plunge pools and ocean views. The property borders the Xpu-Ha cove to the south, a haven for the area’s sea turtles.

solo travel luxury resort

I've stayed in Airbnbs around the world by myself. My top tip for solo travelers is to book for 2 people — even if it costs more.

  • I'm a frequent solo traveler who prefers to stay in Airbnbs over hotels.
  • When I book an Airbnb for a solo trip, I say it's for two people, so hosts don't know I'm alone.
  • Sometimes booking for two costs extra, but I'm willing to pay it because it makes me feel safer.

Insider Today

Cozy cabins , unique tiny homes , luxury apartments — I've booked them all through Airbnb.

As a travel reporter, I've stayed in accommodations around the world, from the US and Canada to Western Europe. I prefer staying in Airbnbs over hotels because they often bring me more unique experiences, such as sleeping in a treehouse in Canada and a livable barrel in Switzerland.

Usually, I travel solo . I've taken overnight trains in the US and Europe, spent seven nights on one of the world's largest cruise ships sailing the Caribbean Sea, and traveled by rail to Niagara Falls, Montréal, and Quebec City . On these trips, I explored new cities and unique accommodations — all by myself.

Now that I'm a seasoned solo traveler , I have a lot of practices in place to ensure I feel as safe as possible when I'm traveling alone — especially in other countries.

When it comes to staying in Airbnbs solo, my best tip is to book accommodation for two people

When I make the reservation, I simply change the number of guests from one to two. Then, In my message to the host, I always say that I may have a friend joining me for my trip.

This way, my host doesn't think I'm traveling all by myself. Creating the illusion that I have someone else with me makes me feel more comfortable falling asleep at night in a stranger's place.

Booking for two sometimes comes with an additional fee, depending on the Airbnb.

For example, when I traveled to Rome and booked two nights in a livable art sculpture Airbnb , the price was $102 a night for one person and $145 a night for two people. In this case, my partner did end up joining me for the stay. But even if he hadn't, I would have been fine paying the additional fee to feel more secure about staying there alone.

Solo travel can be daunting, especially when you're booking accommodation with an individual rather than directly through a company like you would at a hotel.

But after all my unique Airbnb experiences, I think it's worth booking them even when I'm alone. And booking for two makes me feel a little safer.

Find the latest Florida luxury destinations, from new spas to fancy resorts

  • Cindy Cockburn Bay magazine

Oh, Florida. Family and friends from around the world are jealous that we get to live in your paradise with over 1,000 miles of coastline to explore. And here comes another sizzling summer. New resorts are opening, and we can’t wait to say “aah” to their luxury spas. What’s your passion? Go ahead and golf your heart out or snorkel in those living reefs in the Keys. Bring the kids and bring the pets: We even found puppy-friendly resort packages. Let’s embrace our Sunshine State. Here’s what’s new.

The St. Regis Longboat Key Resort

I never thought any resort could top The Breakers in Palm Beach with all its historic glamour. But now all eyes are on Sarasota as The St. Regis gets ready to open this summer. The resort is the largest development to open on Longboat Key in over 50 years. Here’s the scoop: The hotel overlooks the Gulf of Mexico and will offer 168 guest rooms, 26 suites with terraces, a private white-sand beach, multiple swimming pools and luxurious cabanas. A 475-foot-long winding river with cascading waterfalls leads into the grotto, a private sanctuary with Jacuzzi jets and Champagne service at the touch of a button. The lagoon wildlife experience boasts a 350,000-gallon habitat with nearly 50 stingrays, over 2,800 local reef fish and two Aldabra tortoises.

Meet me at The St. Regis Spa! I love the idea of a co-ed snow shower at this new wellness retreat, and I can’t wait to toast to the sunset at the iconic St. Regis Bar, with a latticed circus-esque cage surrounded by a hand-painted mural by William Savarese.

The Ritz-Carlton, Naples

The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, a AAA Five-Diamond-rated resort, was devastated when Hurricane Ian hit in 2022 but has recently unveiled a dramatic renovation. I love the Champagne upon arrival. You’ll find new and innovative dining experiences and creative designs for the resort’s 474 guest rooms and suites. The world-famous 51,000-square-foot Ritz-Carlton Spa is also back open. In March, the hotel opened its eighth eatery with the debut of Nolita, which features Italian fare and artisan pastas made in-house. Also popular is Gumbo Limbo, a casual beach restaurant beloved by visitors and locals alike, offering the perfect setting for a sunset dinner. Golfers will love the establishment’s sister resort, nestled among native wetlands and migratory bird preserves. The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón offers a sanctuary for both couples and families. The resort features a winding river, waterslides and private cabanas. Located within an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary dedicated to protecting the environment, the Tiburón Golf Club features two legendary courses.

AC Hotel Clearwater Beach

One of the newest hotels in Clearwater Beach, the AC Hotel (a Marriott property), has designed the Paws in Paradise package. Guests receive a welcome kit that includes a branded Frisbee bowl, a pet notification door hanger for room service, puppy pads, puppy bubble bath and a list of dog-friendly cafés and restaurants in the area. I love the soft cotton puppy robe and compact doggie bed, ensuring that pups enjoy just as comfortable and cozy a stay as their human counterparts. Paws in Paradise guests will also be pampered with a nightly puppy turndown service, which may include special treats, like a bone or chew toy. An on-site dog park, equipped with a doggy bag dispenser, will be available 24/7, and water will be accessible via the hydration stations on each floor, so fresh air, fresh water and a place to release energy off-leash will always be readily available.

The acclaimed Innisbrook Resort reopened its signature restaurant, Packard’s Steakhouse, after an extensive renovation that included a modernized redesign and a new menu created by David Morris, its recently appointed director of culinary. The best news? It’s open to the public!

Hawks Cay Resort

Centrally located between Miami and Key West on the secluded island of Duck Key, the Hawks Cay Resort is an ideal summer vacation destination with scuba diving adventures and leisurely sunset cruises. The Calm Waters Spa offers locally influenced spa treatments that utilize the natural ingredients and aromas of the islands. When it’s time to dine, embrace prime steak and fresh seafood at Sixty-One Prime, enjoy poolside fare at the Tiki Grill or bring your own catch for a dockside meal at Angler & Ale. Spend more time and less money when you book three nights in one of Hawks Cay Resort’s private villas and get the fourth night free.

Michelin Guide Eateries

Nine Florida restaurants earned Michelin stars when the 2024 Michelin Guide Miami, Orlando and Tampa selections were announced recently at The Tampa EDITION hotel. “Since the arrival of the Michelin Guide to Florida in 2022, there has been significant growth in the state’s local culinary scene, proving Florida is a leading gastronomic destination for travelers near and far,” said Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guides.

This Lush Caribbean Island Has a New Luxury Resort With Just 14 Rooms Across 285 Acres — Each With a Private Deck and Plunge Pool

Coulibri Ridge is the newest luxury resort on Dominica.

“You really have to want to come to Dominica ,” says Dominque Marchand, who with her partner, Daniel Langlois, has just opened the Caribbean island’s third luxury hotel, Coulibri Ridge. And she’s absolutely right.

Coulibri Ridge

  • Coulibri Ridge has 14 near-identical rooms that offer stunning mountain and ocean views and private sun decks with plunge pools.
  • The property has a strong commitment to protecting its environment — you won't find any single-use plastics on-site, they use batteries powered by renewable resources, and you can even find compost containers in the kitchen cabinets.
  • Coulibri Ridge features two copper-ionized infinity-edge pools, daily yoga classes, a gym, and a decadent spa treatment room.

Coming from Los Angeles, I took a 1:13 a.m. flight to Miami where after a one-hour layover, I flew to the island’s Douglas-Charles Airport and arrived at 2:24 p.m. After that, motion sickness was nearly guaranteed on the two-hour drive through the island’s windy road before arriving at the resort.

Of course, it’s a bit easier from the East Coast, as Dominica receives daily flights from Miami as well as limited flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico. But the island’s unique topography — its nine volcanoes across the island’s 250 square miles allow for few stretches of flat land that could accommodate runways — can mean that, on windy days, even private planes will get stuck or delayed elsewhere.

However, its challenge in accessibility is precisely why the island has been kept free of overdevelopment. (And perhaps why, when you tell most people you’re going to Dominica, they assume you mean you’re headed to the Dominican Republic.)

Indeed, in an effort to distinguish itself, Dominica — pronounced “daa-muh-nee-kuh” and named by Christopher Columbus after arriving to colonize it on a Sunday — rebranded a few years ago to “The Nature Island.” Personally, when I hear “nature,” my first thought is “bugs.” But that’s not the case at all at Coulibri Ridge.

Set on the island’s southern tip, just above where the Caribbean crashes into the Atlantic, the boutique resort receives consistent natural breezes and cooler evening temperatures that shoo away mosquitos and flies. Spiders? A rare occurrence.

If you’re lucky, you might see a boa constructor cross the road while you’re driving out of the resort, but snakes — and other threatening creatures — are hardly an issue. Instead, nature in Dominica is defined by the landscape, which in addition to its abundance of volcanoes, boasts 365 rivers, 12 waterfalls, lush hilltops, and nutrient-rich volcanic soil that grows “just about anything,” as more than one local told me.

Upon entering Coulibri Ridge, a bumpy road leads through rugged, lush greenery before ending at the arrival center, the lowest part of the resort’s development. Even here, sweeping views of narrow peak mountains, verdant valleys, and azure water in the distance are enough to quickly quell any jet lag or car-induced nausea.

Although it's spread over 285 acres, Coulibri Ridge has just 14 rooms. A series of seven near-identical, side-by-side structures each host a lower-level 930-square-foot studio room, with a 1,550-square-foot duplex suite above it. Duplexes feature both stunning mountain and valley views — spotting deer and wildlife in the distance can make it feel like you’re at an island safari lodge — and sweeping ocean views.

Private sun decks with plunge pools welcome guests at the rooms’ entrance. A lower level includes a double-height living room, powder room, kitchenette, and dining area that leads to a second covered patio facing the ocean, which is perfect for watching the sunset. Upstairs, bedrooms open to the closet and dressing area, and a second full bathroom. Air-conditioning units upstairs keep the rooms cool, while downstairs, screened windows and patio doors allow for naturally cooling cross breezes.

Coulibri Ridge is the 24th property to join Beyond Green — a portfolio of sustainable independent hotels around the globe. If you weren’t aware that you were headed to an eco-minded property, the missing thermostat downstairs might be your first clue. (There are still the aforementioned air-conditioning units, though.)

There are other hints alluding to the property's efforts to be sustainable: the compost container in the kitchen cabinet, the compostable coffee pods, the lack of single-use plastics, and Earth-minded product choices in cleaning supplies and even spa treatment ingredients.

But Coulibri Ridge’s strongest commitment to the environment perhaps comes from what most guests don’t see. Touring me through the property one morning, Langlois leads me behind one of the resort’s restaurants and opens a door to a long hallway. On the left are a series of batteries that store surplus renewable energy produced by solar panels and wind turbines. On the right are batteries and solar inverters. At the end of a hallway, a single computer monitors power generation, storage, and distribution.

“The idea for this project came to me in the mid '90s,” Langlois says. “We had wanted to do an experiment where we could source all of our water and power to live completely off the grid. Dominica’s topography — abundant sunshine as well as evening rainfall — made it ideal, and while we hadn’t always imagined it would take shape as a resort, in the end, it made the most sense.”

The project technically first broke ground in 2001, with Langlois and Marchand using local workers. However, after only a single building had been constructed in five years, they realized they’d need to bring in additional labor. The resort was all but ready to open by September 2017 when a massive hurricane hit the island, wiping out many of the surrounding towns and leaving them without water or power for nearly a year and a half.

“Even though our resort wasn’t badly affected, we couldn’t reopen until we had helped resuscitate the town,” he adds. To that end, the couple rebuilt the nearby elementary school with hurricane-resistant materials, renewable energy backup systems, and a fully equipped community kitchen. They also constructed a jetty in the nearby village of Scotts Head to aid emergency evacuation efforts in the case of hurricanes and other natural disasters, while also supporting the day-to-day activities of local fishermen and tourism providers.

After years of making sure the town was back to normal and ready for visitors, Coulibri Ridge welcomed its first guests in December 2022. “We had a bunch of young people in their 20s, thinking that they had found the next ‘hot spot’ for New Year’s Eve,” Langlois says. “I don’t think they were necessarily disappointed, but this definitely isn’t what they were expecting.”

While Dominica might not be the Caribbean’s new hot spot, it should be on every nature lover's list. Instead of miles of sandy shores, Dominica’s jagged coast affords crystal-clear waters for snorkeling, scuba diving, and lionfish spear hunting. Its undulating interior landscape has made it a trekker’s dream, with the 114-mile Waitukubuli National Trail running the length of the island. For a taste of culture, head into the village of Roseau for souvenirs like intricately woven local grass baskets and island T-shirts sold by a local graphic designer. You'll find no shortage of beach shack restaurants serving up freshly caught fish.

That said, it's hard to compare to the food back at Coulibri Ridge. Chef Damian Mason, a Dominica native, spent 20 years working at resorts in Barbados before returning home to spearhead the resort’s culinary program. The resort's breakfast and lunch restaurant, Mesa, serves anything from vegetable omelets and an array of freshly squeezed juices to gazpacho, fresh fish burgers, and quinoa salad. The dinner restaurant, Vista, opens to an expansive outdoor lounge and serves a rotating nightly menu of specials that could be anything from coconut curry lobster in a banana leaf to lentil dal with pickled onions and garlic naan.

There's also a gym, daily morning yoga classes taught in an outdoor pavilion, two infinity-edge pools (which use copper ionization instead of chlorine), a decadent spa treatment room with ocean views and a private outdoor tub, and one of the most tranquil settings in the Caribbean. Suffice it to say, once you do finally arrive at Coulibri Ridge, it might be hard to leave.

Nightly stays start at $650. To book a stay or learn more, visit coulibriridge.com .
