Hobart cruise terminal

Port Hobart's cruise ship terminal is located at Macquarie Wharf, with 3 dedicated berths. The passenger terminal has a waterfront location in downtown Hobart (Hunter Street), on the eastern docks. Most of the city's main sights are within easy walking distance.

The cruise port's closest to the city center berth is "Pier 1". The most distant berth is "Pier 3". The terminal's area is historically known as "Constitution Docks". Today, the area is well developed and has many shops selling gifts, souvenirs, hand-made crafts and arts, clothing, also several food and beverage/F&B venues.

The cruise terminal's facilities were last renovated in 2013. The refurbishment project's budget was AUD 7 million. The new "Macquarie Wharf 2" terminal building was inaugurated in October 2013. The first ship call was by the Sea Princess ship.

  • The new Terminal 2 offers as amenities and services waiting hall, visitor info services, retail shops (including locally-made crafts, gifts, duty-free jewelry), currency exchange.
  • The Hobart port's re-development project transformed the under-utilized wharf into a modern cargo facility plus a modern cruise passenger terminal. The project was based on extensive consultations with port customers, cruise companies and Australia's Antarctic logistics community.
  • The project included the installation of new internal walls, creating 3 sections for cruise terminal, Antarctic cargo handling areas, offices. New entry ramp was constructed. The old asbestos roof was removed and replaced with a new. A new road network manages better the cruise passenger traffic and includes 15 new bus bays.
  • Among the project's innovations were the use of natural light and ventilation in the terminal building,

The cruise ship terminal's waterfront location and facility size allow it to be used for various public events on non-ship days.

Hobart Shore Excursions for Tasmania Cruisers

As Australia's second oldest city, Hobart is home to a number of fascinating historical sites that can give visitors a glimpse of the area's rich colonial past. Among the historic buildings are numerous restaurants and quaint cafes that lend an almost European feel to this harbor-side city. Part of Hobart's charm is its laid-back atmosphere, people here do not seem to rush, but rather take their time moving from one place to another. It is this aura of relaxation, and a range of brisk activities, that makes this such a fantastic vacation destination. Read on for our recommended Hobart shore excursions that will enhance and inspire your itinerary.

Upon arrival to Hobart , travelers will note that many of the city's inhabitants wear clothing suited to outdoor activities. This is due to the effect that the natural world has upon the people here. It is a part of the culture and may be as important to them as oxygen.

One natural area of Tasmania that must not be missed is the Bonorong Wildlife Park . A sanctuary and park, this place offers its guests the chance to interact with a variety of Tasmanian animals. Those who come here for a visit will be able to interact with a number of free roaming marsupials including kangaroos and wallabies.

For a glimpse of this island destination's native plants and shrubbery, vacationers can visit the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. This is a splendid area of conservation that is home to some vegetation that has become increasingly rare in recent years. A subarctic plant house is a featured attraction at this location, which also offers a number of tours that can provide a good look into the importance of the garden's collections.

The Huon Valley Apple and Heritage Museum is available for those who wish to gather some historical information about Hobart and its inception. Described by many as a time capsule of Tasmania's past, this building contains exhibits and antiques from the early and mid-1800s, and is sure to give interested viewers a great look at how the region functioned during the colonial times.

One of the greatest parts of taking a cruise to Hobart is that all of these unique adventures are right on the outskirts of the city. When done with a tour of Tasmania's countryside attractions, visitors can feel free to take a stroll down Salamanca Place, where many galleries, art studios and restaurants now populate this district once used for whaling. Those who come to Hobart will see an unforgettable place in one of the most remote regions on Earth.

Explore the Southernmost Island on Tasmania Shore Excursions

When your ship docks at Hobart, Tasmania, excursions are designed to show you the most picturesque, sophisticated, and fun side of Australia’s southernmost island. Given that Hobart was founded as a 19th century penal colony, that’s a remarkable feat indeed.

If you’re intrigued by the infamous penal colony beginnings of Hobart, Tasmania excursions to Port Arthur are the way to go. Take a guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site where you’ll hear haunting stories of how the penitentiary developed in the 1830s, first as a timber station and then as a ship-building area to provide convicts with training and skills. Walk the site and see the Isle of the Dead cemetery, where convicts, soldiers, and settlers are buried.

Tasmania shore excursions to Richmond, a colonial town not far from Hobart, offer an opportunity to step back in time as you view Georgian-style buildings, walk over Australia’s oldest bridge, visit Australia’s oldest Catholic church, explore the museums, galleries, and shops, including a traditional lolly shop with an exceptional array of sweets.

For an exceptional day ashore from your cruise to Tasmania , spend time discovering the exotic wildlife on visits to the oldest trout hatchery in the southern hemisphere, a fishing museum, and the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, home to rescued koalas, kangaroos, wombats, and Tasmanian devils. If your fascination with Tasmania’s most famous marsupial, the Tasmanian devil, remains unabated, book an excursion to Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park.

As a food and wine fancier on a cruise to Australia , you can sip and savor your way through the Hobart area on Tasmania shore excursions to wineries, breweries, and oyster farms. Learn about how oysters are farmed and taste freshly harvested ones. Sample brews and boutique wines from Australia’s oldest brewery, finest pubs, and best wineries.

You can learn about the culture of Tasmania and various aspects of the art world when you book a tour to the MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. Located on the grounds of the Moorilla winery, it is the largest privately funded museum in the Southern Hemisphere. Its collections are wide-ranging, edgy, and endlessly fascinating.

?

Get a great introduction to Hobart on this comprehensive excursion. You will experience the best of Hobart City and its surroundings, including spectacular scenery, history, nature, and native wildlife.

Your journey starts as you meet your experienced and knowledgeable local driver guide, who will share tales of life in Hobart. After an orientation tour of the city and its history, pass by Salamanca Place, known for its restored sandstone warehouses that have been repurposed as cafes, galleries, and shops. Go through Battery Point, filled with quaint historic cottages, Georgian mansions and cafes.

Travel towards Mount Wellington, through the suburbs of south Hobart and Ferntree, and take note of the multiple eco systems you pass through as you ascend the mountain. View the massive rock formation known as the Organ Pipes, and then arrive at Mount Wellington summit - a harsh rocky alpine environment affording unsurpassed views on a clear day, where you will be able to witness the panoramic spectacle of Hobart and its surrounding suburbs, towns and vast waterways.

After heading back down the mountain, you will stop at the Female Factory. Once a female prison, the Female Factory was mentioned in Bryce Courtenay's book, "The Potato Factory." From here, continue with your tour of Hobart, past many historic buildings as you travel through the city and across the Tasman Bridge, which spans the beautiful Derwent River. Your next stop will be at Rosny Park Lookout, where you will enjoy magnificent views back towards Hobart. The bridge and Hobart's Port, with Mount Wellington as a backdrop, makes for a perfect photo opportunity. Visit the exquisite Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, and have some free time to explore.

The second part of your journey takes you out to Bonorong Wildlife Park, for an up-close experience of Australian native animals, notably the infamous Tasmanian Devil. Wander amongst the friendly wallabies and kangaroos before setting out to Richmond Village. Step back in time and enjoy exploring the village, a mixture of convict-built homes, classic Georgian mansions, small cottages, unique shops, galleries and restaurants. Or perhaps visit the Richmond Gaol, a convict era building and tourist attraction. Chat with a local, or just enjoy the cozy ambience of the many coffee shops and restaurants. You will also see the convict-built Richmond Bridge, and the historic Catholic Church.

Your excursion ends when you return to your cruise ship with pleasant memories about Hobart, its lifestyle, nature and history.

I thought at one time there was a link to some reviews that were posted on the shore excursion descriptions page. There weren't many reviews and I thought that would grow in time, but maybe it was just discontinued (or I'm having a senior moment). What prompts this post is that I would like to leave reviews of the two excursions I took on my recent Enchantment cruise.

The two experiences couldn't have been more different. We had a great tour in Honduras with a knowledgeable guide who gave us plenty of information about life on the island of Routan. The guide in Belize was limited to "Look, there's a howler monkey. Look, there's another one." The shore excursion description advised we would "Learn about the tropical trees, flora, and Belizean bush medicine remedies that were used by the Mayan people for centuries." Apparently, the guide that was supposed to impart that information was off that day.

With so many options for excursions, I would appreciate being able to get some first-hand knowledge about whether the third-party provider would be delivering on the promises outlined.

Carnival shows reviews of excursions, royal does not.

You would have to google to find reviews. Royal just doesnt show them. Doesnt post them. I wish they would but nope.

You can go to the Ports of Call boards and post/read reviews on shore excursions there.
