A PERFECT CIRCLE, PRIMUS, PUSCIFER announce 2024 tour for MAYNARD's 60th birthday

Maynard James keenan puscifer tool a perfect circle 2020 SHINN, Travis Shinn

Maynard James Keenan is turning 60 next spring, and the TOOL frontman is celebrating in a big way. Keenan's two other bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer , will be joining forces with funk-metal greats Primus  for a spectacular collaborative tour that will feature all three bands sharing the stage at the same time.

Dubbed Sessanta, the 2024 trek is a callback to Keenan's 50th birthday celebration, Cinquanta, which was supposed to be a one-off collaboration between APC, Puscifer and Primus in Los Angeles.

Now, that star-studded lineup of musicians will be reuniting for seven West Coast tour dates in the spring of next year, kicking off April 17th (Keenan's actual birthday) in Phoenix and wrapping up the next week with a two-night stint at Colorado's iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater.

The untraditional tour setup is unique in and of itself, but the gigs will also mark A Perfect Circle's first shows since 2018, adding another layer of specialness to the whole excurision.

"It took some massaging, and some long days in rehearsal, but we managed to seamlessly pull off this three-song rotation at Cinquanta, my 50th birthday shows, at The Greek Theatre in 2014," Keenan said in a press release.

"Bands aren't used to simultaneously sharing the stage with other bands, but if anyone can do it, it's Primus, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer."

See Keenan tease the tour below with a hysterical video of him dottering around a nursing home, and then check out the tour dates. Tickets go on sale this Friday September 15th, and you can scoop yours here .

We are expecting to see an extraordinary experience as Puscifer, A Perfect Circle, and Primus will unite for the Sessanta tour, set to take place in April 2024 across the Western U.S. This tour resurrects and expands upon the 2014 Cinquanta event held in Los Angeles, which originally celebrated Maynard James Keenan’s 50th birthday. Now, as Keenan turns 60, Sessanta promises to be an unforgettable celebration of his career. Sessanta’s distinctive format involves musicians from all three bands joining each other’s performances throughout the concert. While each group will have its own unique set, the night will see a continuous transformation of the players. Tickets go on sale this Friday (15th).

Keenan comments:

“It took some massaging, and some long days in rehearsal, but we managed to seamlessly pull off this three-song rotation at Cinquanta, my 50th birthday shows, at The Greek Theatre in 2014. On Saturday, April 20, Maynard James Keenan led his Sessanta tour to Los Angeles for an exhilarating performance at The Hollywood Bowl that honored the full scope of the legendary artist’s influence. While Kennan’s 60th birthday celebration tour traditionally stages only the artist’s latter two bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer–alongside progressive metal contemporaries Primus–this performance featured a special guest appearance from Tool, the frontman’s renowned first outfit in its hometown.

From the show’s outset, it was apparent that this 13th stop on the collaborative tour would be a very lucky night for attendees. Sit-in abounded through the ten alternating sets that compose the revue’s first, three acts, including guest spots from singer-songwriter Carina Round for APC’s “The Contrarian” and Smashing Pumpkins’ James Iha during APC’s “The Hollow.” In cross-program appearances, Keenan supported Primus’ 1991 fan favorite “Tommy the Cat,” and Les Claypool returned the favor for APC’s iconic “So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish,” donning an upright bass and bow to make the staging particularly special.

To round out its third and final independent performance of the evening, A Perfect Circle invited original members Paz Lechantin and Troy Van Leeuwen to perform “Judith.” After the Sessanta E.P.P.P. set, things took a turn as Keenan addressed the audience before the show’s grand finale, inviting fans to prime their cameras as he’d “picked up some strays.” With that, the frontman was joined onstage by Adam Jones, Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor, assembling the renowned Tool quartet for an explosive surprise treatment of its 1997 classic “Ænema.” Claypool joined Keenan on the microphone for this storming show highlight. After the ensuing roar of applause, the trio of alternative metal pioneers returned to business as usual for a collaborative treatment of Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon.”

The Sessanta tour will stage again tomorrow, April 23, and West Valley, Utah’s Maverick Center. After five further performances, the tour will conclude with a May 4 finale at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, N.Y. For tickets and more information, visit sessantalive.com/ .

Tool Give Surprise Performance at A Perfect Circle-Puscifer-Primus Show

The LA show also featured A Perfect Circle reuniting with original members Paz Lenchantin and Troy Van Leeuwen

Tool Give Surprise Performance at A Perfect Circle-Puscifer-Primus Show

Maynard James Keenan has been celebrating his 60th birthday all month with two of his bands — A Perfect Circle and Puscifer — along with Primus on the “Sessanta” tour . On Saturday night (April 20th) at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, fans were treated to all three of Keenan’s bands when Tool gave a surprise performance toward the end of the concert.

The tour usually has a no-video policy until the last song of the night, which is Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” but Keenan said from the stage that he would permit filming of the next song because he had “picked up some strays” to join him onstage. At that point, Tool’s Danny Carey, Adam Jones, and Justin Chancellor walked out to the delight of the fans.

Keenan joked, “Danny’s up there, like, ‘You call this a fuckin’ drum set! Where’s the rest of it?’,” alluding to the Tool stickman’s usual elaborate setup. Then, Tool launched into “Ænema” with Primus’ Les Claypool joining Keenan on vocals.

That wasn’t the only surprise at the Los Angeles gig. Earlier in the evening, original A Perfect Circle members Paz Lenchantin (bass) and Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar) joined APC for a performance of “Judith.”

The concert also marked the last one on the outing for A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese, who rejoined the band for the tour, but noted before it launched that he would only stay on through the Hollywood Bowl show due to his commitments with Foo Fighters. Puscifer’s Gunnar Olsen will take over behind the kit for APC during the remainder of the tour.

The “Sessanta” tour runs through a May 4th show in Queens, New York, with tickets to the remaining dates available here .

Sessanta, the tour featuring Puscifer, A Perfect Circle and Primus joining forces, and sharing band members for a wholly unique concert experience, have extended their tour, adding a performance at Pine Knob Music Theatre on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at 8 p.m. Pine Knob Music Theatre is presented by Proud Partners United Wholesale Mortgage, Trinity Health and Ally.

“What a glorious notion of combining three bands that all start with the letter ‘P’ for a tribute to Maynard Keenan's 60th trip around the sun,” shared Primus’ Les Claypool. “I’ve known Maynard for more than three decades and I have to say, I’ve yet to meet a more creative, ambitious and industrious human being; that is assuming he is actually human. Often his perspective and output are more ‘extraterrestrial’ than that of this planet so, Itwouldn't surprise me if he has some sort ‘Prometheus’ type DNA deep in his marrow.”

Sessanta is a resurrection, and expansion, of the 2014 Los Angeles event, Cinquanta, which was originally a one-time only celebration. Much like that fabled evening, which commemorated Maynard James Keenan’s landmark 50th birthday, Sessanta celebrates the Puscifer and A Perfect Circle frontman as he turns 60.

The tour’s unique format sees the musicians from the trio of bands joining each other’s performances throughout the concert. While each group will have their own distinctive set, the players will continually transform as the night unfolds.

“It took some massaging, and some long days in rehearsal, but we managed to seamlessly pull off this three-song rotation at Cinquanta, my 50th birthday shows, at The Greek Theatre in 2014,” says Keenan of the dates that also sees A Perfect Circle’s first live performances since 2018. “Bands aren’t used to simultaneously sharing the stage with other bands, but if anyone can do it, it’s Primus, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.”

Tool (formed in 1990) is a Grammy Award-winning American alternative metal and art rock band that also lends influences from progressive and psychedelic rock, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

With dreams of lives in the film industry, bassist Paul D’Amour and guitarist Adam Jones moved to Los Angeles during the 1980s, which is where they met singer Maynard James Keenan and drummer Danny Carey. Upon forming in 1990, the band spent two years performing live shows around Los Angeles, and recording demos to raise their profile. In 1992 Tool signed with Zoo Entertainment, who issued the band’s debut EP “Opiate” the same year. Led by the singles “Hush” and “Opiate”, the record was a hard-hitting, heavy release and was supported with a tour alongside Rollins Band, Fishbone and Rage Against the Machine.

With Nirvana augmenting the successful grunge period of the late eighties and early nineties, Tool toned down the metal themes on their debut full-length, “Undertow”. Released in 1993, the record rose to No. 50 on the Billboard 200, and was marked by its nihilistic and haunting aesthetic. Following the release the band played a successful series of shows on the 1993 Lollapalooza tour, where they moved from the second stage to the main, and were introduced by comedian Bill Hicks.

Tool’s second studio album, “Ænima” was released in March 2003 marked by the departure of bassic D’Amour and arrival of Justin Chancellor. Produced by prog-rock producer David Bottrill, the record was dedicated to the late Bill Hicks, who had shared many of the band’s ideals. Later earning triple platinum certification despite the falling popularity of alternative rock, the record was led by the Grammy-winning titled track and led Tool to become figureheads of alternative metal.

Once again supported by an extensive touring schedule, the band’s third full-length “Lateralus” followed in 2001, this time marked with art rock themes with greater atmospheric accompaniments both visual and auditory. Rising to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, an impressive feat for an alt-metal group, the record spawned the single “Schism”, which went on the win the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2001. Two years of solid touring followed, including dates alongside King Crimson, following which the group’s members took time away from Tool to focus on other interests.

Led by the single “Vicarious”, Tool’s fourth full-length album, “10,000 Days”, arrived in May 2006, once again topping the U.S. Billboard 200. Proving not quite as popular as its predecessor, the album’s packaging later won the Grammy for Best Recording Package, and was supported with constant touring alongside Isis and Mastadon.

Live reviews

What a show. I can not believe I never saw Tool in my high school years. I've wasted half of my life not having seen them. There are really three shows when you go to a Tool concert. We'll start from what I saw on the left to what I saw on the right:

1) The visuals. The screen behind the band was CONSTANTLY filled by amazing images and videos. The images and light coming from so many angles could be a show all its own. Beautiful.

2)Duh. The band. Drummer, Guitarist, Bassist, and Maynard's little raised stage area were all lit perfectly well. MJK was wearing riot gear, interestingly enough. The drummer astounded me. They often do, but this guy was surrounded by percussion and made me feel like I was the one in the drummer box. Guitarist and Bassist played with the crowd constantly. Professionals and obviously so thankful for the admiration. What talent in each performer.

3) The crowd. Initially, my wife and I were in the pit and caught the opening act (3Teeth...think Tool, NIN, and Marilyn Manson cloned into a band. We had so much fun with them). After they finished and we got our first round of beers, we made our way to the balcony nearly all the way to the edge stage right. We had full view of the band and it was only then that I realized how packed in people were down below. We got to watch the moshers and laugh at the crowd surfers who were yanked out of the crowd by security as if they were tissues being taken from a kleenex box. I'm so glad we weren't up front. Anytime someone tried recording with their phones (Seriously, idiots. Please stop this), the staff would wave mag-lights into their lenses. Great idea BUT it also menas you're blinding everyone between you and the recorder. I can imagine that'd be a bit jarring.

Great show from beginning to end.

Sometimes it is nearly impossible to remove yourself from your surroundings when attending a concert in a giant corporate arena. While others times, suspension of disbelief is achieved effortlessly. When it comes to a Tool show, the venue itself literally ceases to exist. That was the case at the Pepsi Center last night. Hypnotized by Can Buyukberber’s alien/reptilian visuals and Maynard James Keenan’s deviant psychology, the sold-out crowd took flight on a journey into the furthest reaches of the human mind.

Transitory life was put on hold as we were forced to look inward instead of forward. The words and ideas of controverisial visionaries such as Bill Hicks, Carl Jung, and Karl Marx joined with the industrial heartbeat provided by Danny Carey, Justin Chancellor, and Adam Jones; all while MJK preached the gospel of poisoned religion, astrological phenomenon, unified consciousness, and Armageddon.

Tool shows have shown very little variety since the last album, but that doesn’t mean each one isn’t a unique experience. Like a mushroom or LSD trip, the vehicle and destination are same, but the journey is something completely different each time.

Been a bucket list band for some time now.... Finally got close enough to make it.

Entertainment value 5

Fan base 10

Maynard remained in the dark the entire performance and once just left the stage for whatever reason letting his fellow band mates play continuous rifts until his return. He made a brief walk across stage after the show was over and the lights turned on.

The extremely long instrumental rifts were TOOL fashion but they could have easily squeezed in 5 more songs if they just dialed that back a bit.

Show lasted just over 2 hours..... Expected a longer show. Everyone did.

No pics or video were allowed except the very last song when Maynard let everyone know they could. This was strictly enforced as a guy was removed for doing so.

They released new album date during the show.

They did not play "Sober".... The one song I was hoping to hear live...

The drummer played some killer solos...

Maynard was sporting a "red and black striped" mohawk.

Overall a pleasant trip.... The fan base truly didn't disappoint by cheering loudly.... And letting TOOL know they were still loved and supported....

I still want to hear "Sober" live..... Ugh

One of the best shows I have ever seen, and I have been to many. This was my 3rd time seeing Tool, and this was their best performance. Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor were having an out of body experience. These guys were playing out of their minds! I have never seen anyone rock a gong the way Danny did. They were both spot on. Tool may have the best rhythm section in the world right now. The light show was amazing as well. The screens and laser effects was out of this world. I personally like the no camera policy these guys have too. It was great to not have to watch a show through someone's phone screen for a change. They did let everyone take out their device for pictures and video on the last song. Nice compromise. As always, the Tulsa crowd was great too. I believe they are the reason Tool keeps coming back here. They get a lot of love from us down here. Now I have to find a way to get to another city and see this one again!

I've been a Tool fan since I first saw the video for Sober back on Headbangers Ball with Riki Rachtman (that shows hold old I am), but I've only seen them three times. Let me just say that they don't tour often, and when they do, it's not always close to home, but it is ALWAYS worth the drive/flight! Tool never disappoints and ALWAYS brings their "A game". Danny was sick as hell and STILL brought down the house with his skills! Adam and Justin delivered unrivaled precision on all my faves, well almost all, and I say that just cause I'm greedy and want to hear MORE! Then of course Mr. Maynard James... the dude stands in the background the entire time and lets the rest of the band take the spotlight. The dude is weird as hell... but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love these guys and hope to go to dozens more Tool shows before I kick the bucket. #legendary

I expect the sound at the dome to be poor, but, this was utter crap. The floor usually has acceptable sound, and for $150 I expect that I will get my bang for the buck. I got hardly any vocals, and a muddy distorted mess. I also expect to get nothing from Maynard, and we got a little more than that. The band has so little stage presence, that, I ended up watching the impressive visuals probably 80%of the show. And for half of it I even forgot the band was playing. Danny Carey the drummer did his best to take center stage and he did an admirable job, and Justin Chancellor the bassist also attempted to draw some attention. Stoned out of your gourd you will truly appreciate the visuals, but, stay home throw on any or all tool cds, search for visuals and enjoy. Or just watch your screen saver, and you will feel like you are there but better.

Absolutely incredible show! The sound was perfect, the visuals were spectacular and the band sounded super-tight (no surprise there). That is no easy feat considering the complexity of their music (especially their new material). They're one of the very few bands that actually sound the same or better live than the studio album. Maynard is finally more visible on this tour as they've added two platforms on each side of the drum riser where he crouched, danced, slithered and delivered his exceptional vocals. He even engaged the crowd a little bit, which was shocking. You could tell he and all his band mates are in a good head space and were really enjoying themselves. Truly memorable show from one of the greatest rock bands ever!

Tool concerts tend to stick with you for quite a while. The visuals alone are captivating, inspiring, working with the music, creating a synchronicity few bands have achieved.

Adam Jones is the artistic force that really drives the group, Maynard James Keenan providing lyrical emotion and commentary. Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor take the songs and drive them to a new level with brilliant drum and bass overtures.

The sum of the parts continually push the limits of progressive music and the best way to experience this is in person. I'll always support this band, their creative vision is something to witness, hopefully they will tour and create music for us to consume. If you haven't seen them, do it before they stop!

The band was unreal as always.

I attended a Montreal show a couple of years back and this was just as good along with the addition of some new album tracks.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the crowd here. The fans were far more connected to the music in Montreal. They understood the ebb and flow.

But, for some reason, we've got fools in Toronto who show up, get trashed and are somehow louder than the band. People here don't seem to get the idea that they're there with 12 - 13 thousand other people so it's really not about them. But, hey, that's the maturity level of kids old enough to drink legally, but not self-aware...

If ever they're back again, I'll see them, but never at Scotia again.

I have been waiting for over 20 yrs for Tool to come back to Dallas and Jam out. Well that's exactly what TOOL did on 22January2020 in Dallas, TX at American Airlines Arena. From start to end nothing but excellence from all 4 Gentleman. lanyards voice was Top form and the musician's jammed do hard I know they have to have blisters on their fingers. They are a very fine tuned head banging, fist in the air rocking Rock and Roll band of the Decade. If you happen to get a chance to see TOOL within the next 4 shows, only in the states, get there. Because you dont want to miss this show. SHOW OF THE YEAR!!!!! Guaranteed!!!

Primus 2024 Tour Dates – Primus Concert Schedule

Primus 2024 Tour Dates – Primus Concert and Festival Schedule

Primus announces 2024 tour dates. This tour is called the “ Sessanta ” tour. This is also Primus ’ latest studio album. Now, we will help you find shows and tickets to upcoming Primus concerts in 2024!

Primus Announce 2024 Tour Dates

Before starting to give information about Primus 2024 tour dates. They have no concerts in 2023 from this time. For the next year in 2024, Primus will return to the stage for the first time after the 2022 tour.

Will Primus tour in 2024?

Maynard James Keenan is celebrating his 60th birthday with a full tour schedule for 2024. Tool ‘s frontman Maynard has revealed tour dates for A Perfect Circle , Puscifer , and Primus in 2024.

“ Sessanta ” tour will kick off on Maynard’s birthday (April 17th) with a performance at the Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix, Arizona, and culminates with a two-night stand at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, on April 25th-26th.

Maynard is also planning a “birthday month” in April 2024, similar to how he celebrated his 50th birthday with a crossover performance event called “ Cinquanta ” in 2014.

Primus , an American rock band formed in 1984, is known for its distinctive and unconventional style that blends elements of rock, funk, punk, and experimental music.

Primus’ music defies genre. The band, led by bassist and vocalist Les Claypool, mixes funk, metal, alternative rock, and avant-garde experimentation. Claypool’s virtuoso bass playing defines the band’s sound.

The band became popular in the early 1990s with albums such as “Sailing the Seas of Cheese” and “Pork Soda.” Songs such as “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” and “My Name Is Mud” became radio hits, and their strange music videos got attention.

Les Claypool, in particular, has participated in several side projects and collaborations, showing his versatility as a musician. His collaborations with Tom Waits and Sean Lennon are notable.

Primus has taken breaks throughout its tenure, with Claypool pursuing solo projects and other endeavors. The band, however, has reassembled several times, thrilling fans with fresh albums and performances.

Primus has built up an enthusiastic cult following over the years. The ban’s fans, also called “Primusheads,” like the band’s unique approach to music and lyrics.

Primus’ previous albums include “Frizzle Fry,” “Tales from the Punchbowl,” “Antipop,” and “Green Naugahyde.” Each album highlights the band’s expanding sound and aesthetic exploration.

Maynard James Keenan shared a statement about Primus tour dates:

“It took some massaging and some long days in rehearsal. But we managed to seamlessly pull off this three-song rotation at Cinquanta, my 50th birthday shows, at The Greek Theatre in 2014.

Bands aren’t used to simultaneously sharing the stage with other bands, but if anyone can do it, it’s Primus , A Perfect Circl e, and Puscifer . Kind of like ‘We Are the World’ without the bleachers and plastic surgery.”

Maynard James Keenan, the four-time Grammy Award-winning frontman of Tool, is celebrating his 60th birthday with a triple dose of ROCK injected straight into your veins. Primus will join Keenan and his bandmates from A Perfect Circle and Puscifer for a seven-city spring tour, with its fourth show set on April 21 at the Greek Theatre. Based on an official press release, the show's format will simultaneously place the trio of bands on stage. Each group will have its own distinctive set, but as the night develops, "the players will continually transform" as they play off each other's performances.

"It took some massaging and some long days in rehearsal, but we managed to seamlessly pull off this three-song rotation at Cinquanta, my 50th birthday show, at The Greek Theatre in 2014. Bands aren't used to simultaneously sharing the stage with other bands, but if anyone can do it, it's Primus, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer," Keenan said in an earlier statement.

A Perfect Circle is a supergroup born from the collaboration between our celebrant and musician Billy Howerdel in 1999. A year later, they released their debut album, Mer de Noms (Sea of Names), to resounding acclaim, led by Billboard-breaking singles, "Judith," "3 Libras", and "The Hollow." The group also dropped their latest album in 2018 after a fourteen-year drought, and in this upcoming tour, they're making their first concert comeback in six years!

Puscifer, meanwhile, was originally Keenan's solo project dedicated to his "creative subconscious." "The Humbling River," "Conditions Of My Parole," and "The Remedy" are some of Puscifer's most-played hits. Frequent collaborators Carina Round and Mat Mitchell joined the band permanently in 2020, credited in its fourth album, Existential Reckoning.

And finally, we have Primus, the three-time Grammy-nominated rock band fronted by legendary bassist-vocalist Les Claypool. Multiple platinum certifications mark its nearly thirty-year discography, which often employs vivid storytelling in the band's tracks: "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver," "My Name Is Mud," and "American Life," to name a few.

Sessanta: A 60th Birthday Celebration for Maynard James Keenan featuring Puscifer, Primus, and A Perfect Circle is coming to you LIVE on Sunday, April 21, at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, California! Overlooking the picturesque San Francisco Bay, this century-old amphitheater can seat 8,500 fans and blow them away with a fantastic view of a stage fitted with cutting-edge sound and lighting technology. Tickets are selling fast - book yours today!

Primus Performs “Ænema” & More With Tool Members At L.A. Benefit Show [Full Video]

While  Primus  is widely regarded as one of the finest power trios of the modern era, that didn’t stop the band from calling in backup from members of Tool and Queens of the Stone Age on Monday in L.A. During an intimate benefit concert at The Belasco , Tool’s  Danny Carey and  Justin Chancellor  along with  Troy Van Leeuwen  of QotSA sat in for the majority of the ten-song performance.

The hard rock summit came together as a benefit for Canadian director, animator, and writer  Jimmy Hayward  ( Toy Story, Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!, Finding Nemo ). A longtime friend of Primus, the multi-hyphenate is currently undergoing cancer treatment.

The core three of Primus started the show with “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers” and “Groundhog’s Day” before calling out the rest of the calvary. With dual bassists, guitarists, and drummers, the remainder of the show took on an improv-heavy format. The expanded outfit tackled other Primus originals “Too Many Puppies” and “Here Come the Bastards” before dishing out a wide range of covers.

King Crimson ‘s “Thela Hun Ginjeet” marked the first cover of the evening before the collective dipping into the Tool catalog with “Ænema”. Les Claypool and Larry “Ler” LaLonde  previously performed the track with Danny Carey when the Tool drummer subbed in for Primus’ Tim “Herb” Alexander  for a string of shows in 2014.

The superjam then looked to its classic rock influences with takes on  AC/DC ‘s “Whole Lotta Rosie”—with comedian  Dean Delray  wailing on vocals—and Led Zeppelin ‘s “Moby Dick”. The latter track served as a springboard for an extended drum duel between Carey and Alexander before the set wrapped with “My Name Is Mud”. Finally, the show ended where it all began with a return to the Primus songbook for a nearly 20-minute “Southbound Pachyderm”.

Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta setlist: What A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus played

tool primus tour

Maynard James Keenan made a solid case for turning 60 as the new “you won’t believe what happens next” when the Sessanta Tour hit Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix on Tuesday, April 16, for a two-night stand, the second night of which falls on his actual 60th birthday.

The premise of the tour is that members of A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus will not only share a stage but also musicians as the night unfolds, resulting in some truly awe-inspiring feats of musical cross-pollination.

Keenan, who launched his career in the ‘90s as the voice of Tool, is the singer for two of those bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. He’s friends with Primus, whose drummer, Tim Alexander, convinced him to give Jerome, Arizona, his home of many years, a look when he was in the market for a new home in the ‘90s.

Entertainment | multi-act sessanta opens pine knob summer season with a celebration.

But there was nothing soft about the night’s music.

Sessanta was subtitled “A 60th Birthday Celebration for Maynard James Keenan,” and a party it was. The show — two hours and 25 minutes of nearly continuous music (with a 10-minute intermission) — feted the Scottsville, Mich.-raised heavy rock icon, Tool frontman, wine-maker and philanthropist with his full participation, including his two other bands, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle, and his good friends Primus.

And rather than have one act perform after the other, Sessanta was more of a festival, with teach group performing three mini-sets — often with guest appearances by the others — before coming together at the end of the night with all dozen musicians on stage.

The finale of Sessanta on Thursday night, May 2, at the Pine Knob Music Theatre featured musicians from all three bands that performed during the evening. (Photo by Mirak Habbiyyieh/313 Presents)

“Pine Knob — or, as I call it, home,” Keenan — who turned 60 on April 17 — said during the show-opening segment by A Perfect Circle. “We’re gonna take you on a little journey,” he promised, reminding the crowd of nearly 14,000 of the show’s strict and enforced no-camera policy (until the last song). “We’re gonna stay connected,” Keenan instructed — which was certainly what happened over the rest of the night.

With a two-tiered stage that included art deco couches that musicians sat — and grooved — on while the other bands were performing, Sessanta provided a summer season’s worth of highlights all in one night — especially the collaborations. Puscifer’s Carina Round joined A Perfect Circle for “The Contrarian” after presenting Keenan (sporting a dark suit, blue-tinged Mohawk and glasses) with a birthday cupcake, which he handed to a fan in the front row. Keenan dueted with Primus to turn its “Tommy the Cat” into “Maynard the Cat” –during which the band’s Les Claypool played a bass solo while riding up a chair lift that poked fun at Keenan’s “advanced” age.

APC guitarist Billy Howerdel played cymbals at the start of Primus’ “Too Many Puppies,” and Claypool accompanied Puscifer (“The Humbling River”) and APC (“So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish) on a bowed, electrified upright bass. And Primus drummer Tim Alexander popped up periodically during the other group’s sets.

There were sight gags, too. Members of Primus and APC played ping-pong on stage left during Puscifer’s second set, while a masked Claypool rode the chair lift up and down. Keenan and Rounds, meanwhile, engaged in a round of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots while the band performed “The Remedy.”

Puscifer's Carina Rounds, left, and Maynard James Keenan perform on Thursday night, May 2, at the Pine Knob Music Theatre (Photo by Mirak Habbiyyieh/313 Presents)

The idea of playing nice with others accelerated at the end of the show, with the various musicians joining each other’s groups during the three new songs from a “Sessanta E.P.P.P.” that came out prior to the tour. And all hands were on deck for Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” as spacious and aurally awe-inspiring as the wonder of the world it was named after.

“Now THAT’s how you turn 60,” Keenan declared, and he could be confident that everyone at Pine Knob was happy to be part of the party.
