Guide to the 6-month passport rule — what is it?
Editor's Note
It may sound trivial, but one of the best rules you can follow as an international traveler is to remember to check your passport validity before you book flights and hotels.
Why? Because the requirements for entry differ from country to country. In the midst of planning my 2024 travel, I realized my U.S. passport expires in April, which could mess with my plans abroad.
Thankfully, I use a travel checklist to avoid disruptions to my travel itinerary.
I immediately started the passport renewal process online and had my photo taken at my local Walgreens — although you can DIY your passport photo if you prefer — so I could send out my application as quickly as possible. I also opted to expedite the processing time for an additional $60 fee and sent my application on its way.
If you're also in the middle of planning 2024 travel or simply want to know the ideal time to begin getting ready to renew your passport, the TPG team has you covered.
We collected information from the U.S. Department of State website and the United Kingdom's government website to create a one-stop cheat sheet examining a range of nations that typically require you to have a passport that lasts longer than your trip — whether by one, three or six months.
Note that certain countries deviate from the standard six-month requirement. These findings are also only related to passport validity dates — we're not covering visa requirements here. Those can vary depending on where you're going and where you're coming from.
Schengen countries in Europe
Many European countries are signers of the Schengen Agreement . As a result, they follow the 3+3 Rule, meaning your passport must be valid for three months beyond your three-month entry visa or for a total of six months, regardless of the duration of your initial stay.
While some Schengen countries only require passports to be valid for three months beyond your intended stay, others assume you may stay the full 90 days of your visa validity — thus the six-month time period.
The signers of the Schengen Agreement are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania will join the group March 31, 2024.
The countries listed below abide by the usual six months of passport validity unless otherwise noted.
Non-Schengen countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East
Abide by the usual 6 months of passport validity.
- Bosnia-Herzegovina
- New Caledonia
- North Korea
- Saudi Arabia
- Turkmenistan
- Turkey (British passports must be valid for at least 150 days from the date you arrive in the country)
- United Arab Emirates
- West Bank/Gaza Strip
Passport must be valid 3 months beyond the scheduled departure date
Passport must be valid 1 month beyond the date of your intended stay, passport only needs to be valid for the proposed duration of your stay.
- Central African Republic
- Cote d'Ivoire
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Morocco (British passports must be valid for at least three months on the date of entry)
- Sao Tome and Principe
- South Africa (passports must also have 30 days beyond your intended date of exit from the country)
- South Sudan
Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Dominican Republic
- Trinidad and Tobago
Central and South America
- El Salvador
Passport must be valid 3 months beyond arrival
- Brazil (British passports need to be valid six months beyond arrival)
South Pacific
- American Samoa
- French Polynesia
- Marshall Islands
- Papua New Guinea
- New Zealand
Bottom line
When examining the rules, note that some countries have a slight distinction: They may require validity to be either six months from the date of entry or six months from the date of intended departure . For simplicity, we've taken the conservative approach and assumed that for any country with a six-month rule, like most of the ones above, you should ensure your passport is valid six months past the date of intended departure just in case.
Of course, the list above only includes just a few popular destinations worldwide. If your intended destination isn't on the list, it's always best to check with your relevant passport issuer.

US Passport Validity: A Country-by-Country Guide
Navigating the world of international travel can be complex, especially trying to understand passport validity—for example, many individuals are unaware their passports must typically be valid well past their planned return date to be allowed entry into a foreign country.
This comprehensive guide to travel documents aims to simplify issues around US passport validity, making your international travel as seamless as possible.
How long is my US passport valid for?
Ordinarily, a US passport is valid for 10 years for adults and for five years for children under age 16.
Could I be denied entry abroad if my passport expires soon?
Yes. Your passport’s expiration date isn’t the only factor to consider when traveling internationally. Many countries require your passport to have a specific period of validity remaining. If your passport's expiration date does not meet those requirements, you may not be admitted into the country you plan to visit.
Since you cannot travel on an expired passport and it takes time to get a new passport, countries try to ensure visitors won't have any trouble getting back home should their planned departure be delayed. Many have adopted the six-month passport rule to avoid complications.
What is the six-month passport rule?
The 'Six-Month Rule' stipulates that your passport should have at least six months of validity remaining from the date of your entry or departure to or from the international destination. If your passport expiration date is sooner than six months from your date of arrival, you may not be admitted.
This rule isn't universal. Some countries require a three-month validity, and others may have different requirements. It is always advisable to check the specific requirements of your destination country.
The US Department of State's international travel data page is an excellent resource for travelers. You can look up the exact requirements of every foreign country on your dream destination list.
Which countries require passport validity of six months?
A valid passport with six months remaining until the expiration date is required for entry into many countries. Numerous countries in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions require a US passport to have at least six months of validity remaining before granting a visa or allowing entry.
Some countries requiring six months of passport validity include: mainland China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Burma, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and Turkey.
But it’s not universal. For example, Hong Kong and Macau have only a one-month validity requirement.
In some cases, airlines don't allow passengers holding passports with a validity period of under six months to board flights to access these destinations.
Since different rules apply in many countries and sometimes rules change, you should verify the individual country requirements via CIBTvisas’ Visa Quick Check (or on the US Department of State website) as you plan your travel.
Which countries require three months of passport validity?
Several countries, including those within the Schengen Area, require your passport to be valid for three months beyond your intended departure date.
These countries include many popular European destinations: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Which countries have other passport validity requirements?
Some countries, like Australia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, and Colombia, have unique passport validity requirements for US travelers. For example, Australia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, and Colombia only require your US passport to be valid at the time of entry.
FAQs on US passport validity
Why does my passport have to be valid for six months if i’m going abroad for less.
Countries set up the six-month passport rule because if your passport expires while abroad, you could have difficulties returning home until you secure a new passport, a valid visa extending your stay, or an emergency travel document. As a result, you might overstay the terms of your original visa and, depending on your individual economic circumstances, perhaps become a burden to the country. The six-month passport validity rule helps avoid these emergency situations.
Can you renew your passport before it expires?
Yes, US passport holders can renew their passports before the expiration date. For frequent travelers, it may be advisable to do so to avoid limiting your travel options, especially on last-minute trips. The US Department of State recommends renewing your passport nine months before it expires.
How long does it take to renew a passport right now?
The processing time for passport renewals varies depending on the type of passport applicationyou make.
● Routine service will take 10 to 13 weeks, plus an additional two to four weeks for shipping. You can pay extra for expedited mailing service to cut down that time. ● Expedited processing takes seven to nine weeks, plus the mailing time. ● If you must travel within the next 14 days, you may be able to get your passport at a passport agency by making an appointment.
What documents do I need to renew my passport?
To renew your US passport book or passport card, you must fill out the passport application Form DS-82 : US Passport Renewal Application for Eligible Individuals and print it out on single-sided pages.
● To renew your passport, you must provide your Social Security number. If you don’t have a Social Security number, you must submit a statement, signed and dated, including the phrase: 'I declare under penalty of perjury that the following is true and correct: I have never been issued a Social Security Number by the Social Security Administration.” ● By checking the 'large book' box on the DS-82, you can request a passport book with additional pages free of charge, which might be helpful if you travel frequently. ● The form must be filled out completely and signed and dated. ● You must submit your most recent passport with your application. ● Your current passport must meet all the requirements . ● If the name you currently use differs from the name on your most recent US passport, you must include a certified copy of the legal name change document. Examples include marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court-ordered name change documents. ● One photograph must be attached to the application. To avoid delays, be sure your photo meets the photo requirements . ● The mandated government renewal fees can be paid via personal check or money order payable to 'US Department of State.'
What do I do if my passport expires abroad?
After June 30, 2022, US citizens can no longer use their expired passports to return to the United States. If your passport expires abroad, you must contact the nearest US embassy or consulate to apply for a new US passport.
Can I travel from Canada to the US with less than six months on my passport?
Please note that the six-month validity requirement does not apply to American travelers. They can enter the US or Canada up until the day their passport expires.
Are there any other exceptions to the six-month validity rule?
Yes, there are many exceptions. Sovereign nations decide which policies work best for their citizens. Specific countries may have bilateral agreements altering the six-month rule. For instance, Chile allows entry as long as your US passport is valid for the duration of your stay.
Keep your passport travel-ready
By understanding the policies affecting whether your US passport is considered valid for travel, you can better prepare to see more of the world. Remember to verify the specific requirements of your destination country before departure to avoid unwelcome surprises. Check the US State Department details on your country as you plan your trip and renew your passport in time for your travel dates when possible.

Six-Month Passport Validity Rule for Entering the U.S. on a Non-Immigrant Visa
Visitors traveling to the United States are required to be in possession of passports that are valid for six months beyond the period of their intended stay in the United States. Citizens of the countries listed below are exempt from the six-month rule and need only to have a passport valid for their intended period of stay.
In any case, your passport must be valid on your entry into the U.S. If your passport expires during your stay in the U.S., you need to get it renewed or get a new one from the embassy or consulate of your country in the U.S. If you are on a short visit to the U.S. (such as on a tourist visa, business visa, etc.), it would be best to get your passport renewed before your arrival in the U.S. Otherwise, you will be admitted into the U.S. until the expiration date on your passport.

What is the 6-month passport rule.
If your passport is set to expire in six months or less, you may not be able to fly to or from the countries of your choice. That’s why it’s important to check your passport’s expiration date, especially if you plan to travel soon.
In this article, we’ll review:
- Why your passport needs to be valid for six months
- What countries have a 6-month passport validity rule
- What countries have a 3-month passport validity rule
Countries with other types of passport validity requirements
- If you can be denied entry abroad if your passport is almost expired
Why does my passport need to be valid for six months if I won’t be abroad that long?
The reason behind having a passport valid for six months prior to expiration is mainly because of precaution. If there’s an emergency or a sudden reason you have to stay abroad longer than expected, you’ll want to have a valid passport that can allow you to travel to/from the countries you need to visit.
What countries have 6-month passport validity rule?
According to U.S. Department of State , countries requiring six months of validity include:
- Saudi Arabia
- The United Arab Emirates
What countries have a 3-month passport validity rule?
According to U.S. Department of State, European countries within the Schengen zone generally have a 3-month validity requirement. The Schengen zone includes 26 countries that allow people to travel without needing a passport. These include:
- Czech Republic
- Liechtenstein
- Netherlands
- Switzerland
Additionally, the following countries also have the 3-month expiration rule:
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
According to U.S. Department of State, Hong Kong and Macau have a 1-month validity requirement.
Additionally, the following countries have a three-month validity requirement where your passport cannot be expired within three months of the date you leave the country:
- North Macedonia
Can I be denied entry abroad if my passport is almost expired?
Yes. You'll want to check with specific countries about their rules, as in some cases you may be able to enter/leave a country within the 3-month expiration period. However, if your passport is close to expiring (anywhere from 3–6 months) you may be denied entry abroad. If you find yourself in this predicament, you may be able to contact your local embassy about expediting a passport renewal and/or receive an emergency , limited-validity passport.
If you’re looking to travel abroad soon, it’s essential to review your passport to see if it will expire soon. Because it can take time to renew a passport, you’ll want to renew it sooner rather than later so that you have a valid passport in time of your travel.

It's not likely you can travel with an expired passport, as a passport is generally required for international air travel. It also doubles as a valid form of ID for domestic U.S. travel.
If you realize your passport has expired and you have immediate travel plans, you'll need to check the rules for the country you're visiting and quickly submit an application for a new passport.
Learn why and when you need a passport to travel, how to renew your passport and what the rules are for traveling with an expired passport.
Why do you need a passport to travel?
A passport is a standardized form of government identification for those traveling internationally, though it can often be used for identification purposes domestically, too.
Passports ensure that travelers are who they say they are when entering or leaving a country or in other situations when identification is necessary. In most circumstances, everyone entering or leaving a country by land, sea or air needs to have their own passport, even if they’re a child, toddler or baby.
Generally, U.S. passports must be valid for six months beyond the traveler’s departure date to enter another country. However, some countries allow entry to travelers with only three months’ validity on their passport, and others have different regulations altogether. It’s important to verify the country’s rules where you’re planning to travel to ensure you can enter.

How do you renew a passport?
Adult passports are valid for 10 years, and travelers can renew them by submitting an application to the U.S. Department of State.
If your passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago, you must apply for a new one. Child passports for those under 16 expire after five years and cannot be renewed.
To renew your passport, follow these steps:
Complete a passport renewal application ( Form DS-82 ).
Get passport photos taken.
Mail in your completed application and photos along with your current or expired passport and the required fees.
Currently, it takes up to 10 weeks to get a new passport or renew an existing one. However, there are ways to reduce the time it takes to get a new passport if you need it faster.
Expedited processing . By choosing expedited processing for an additional $60, your passport can be issued in three to five weeks.
Expedited delivery . Applicants can pay $19.53 for expedited delivery from the U.S. Postal Service. This upgrade delivers your new passport to you one to two days after it is mailed.
Urgent travel . This service is available by appointment at a passport agency and is for those with urgent travel plans within the next 14 days (or five days if you’ve already applied by mail). There is no fee for the appointment but spots are limited.
Emergency . In life-or-death situations that require travel within 72 hours, you may be able to obtain a passport the same day or the next day.
Passport expeditors or courier companies are another option to get your passport more quickly. These private, third-party companies are allowed to submit expedited passport applications on behalf of their customers. These agencies typically charge additional fees on top of the standard application and expedited service fees.

Typically, travelers are required to have valid identification when flying. However, the rules can vary depending on whether you’re flying domestically or internationally.
Can you travel domestically with an expired passport?
A passport isn’t required for U.S. citizens traveling within the United States. If you’re flying within the U.S. and your passport has expired, it’s best to use another form of government identification. Forms of ID that are accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the airlines include state-issued driver’s licenses, state-issued ID cards and military ID.
If you’re traveling with an expired passport and don’t have one of the forms of ID listed above, you may still be able to fly if your passport hasn’t expired more than 12 months ago. However, you may be asked to show secondary forms of identification to prove your identity.
Can you fly with an expired passport to another country?
Traveling internationally requires a valid passport to depart the U.S. and/or return from a foreign country.
There are a few exceptions for passengers traveling within the Western Hemisphere. These include a NEXUS card when returning from Canada, a Merchant Mariner Document when traveling on official business or a Military Identification Card when traveling on official orders.
Traveling with expired passport rules during COVID
During the pandemic, the U.S. government issued a temporary order allowing those with an expired passport to fly home to the U.S. This rule granted travelers with passports expiring on or after Jan. 1, 2020, to return directly to the U.S. until June 30, 2022. This exception has since expired and is no longer valid.

What if your passport expired and you need to travel tomorrow?
If you’re traveling within three business days because of a life-or-death emergency of one of your immediate family members, you may be able to get a new passport the same day . Here’s how to get a passport quickly for next-day travel:
Get documentation of the emergency. This could be a death certificate, letter from a mortuary or a letter from a hospital explaining your family member’s condition. It must be translated by a professional if it’s not in English.
Obtain proof of your upcoming travel, such as an airline ticket or itinerary.
Complete a passport application and get passport photos taken.
Call the National Passport Information Center at (877) 487-2778 during business hours or (202) 647-4000 during non-business hours.
Explain your situation and why you need to travel right away.
If you qualify, the center will assist you in making an appointment at an eligible passport agency. Note that an appointment is not guaranteed.
Bring proof of the emergency and travel plans, your passport application and payment for all necessary fees to your appointment.

Six Months Passport Validity Rule
What is the six-month passport validity rule? When traveling overseas, most people know that a valid United States passport is required to enter an international destination. But, what is unknown to the traveler is that some countries would need to have enough six-month validity on their passport to travel to the country known as the six-month validity passport rule for visitors . Therefore, if your passport expires within the next six months or, in some cases, three months, some countries will refuse to give you entry into the country.
Hence, this rule is in place so that if the unexpected visitor needs to stay for up to six months, his/her passport would be valid to leave the country.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
What is the Six Month Passport Validity Rule?
The 6 Month Validity Rule is imposed by foreign countries and not by the United States of America. It means that your passport should be valid for more than six months before you can enter a foreign country that imposes the six-month rule. This rule is imposed by some of the countries we have listed below. This rule is prevalent in the Asian continent, such as China and Hong Kong.
Which Countries Require Six Months on Passport?
When visiting another country, remember that the six-month rule is enforced by countries outside the US, not by the US. Hence, it’s important to know the rules when entering or leaving to avoid any issues.
Countries That Require a 3-Month Passport Rule?
Which countries need you to have a passport that is valid for three months or more? As a traveler, it’s important to know the requirements for international travel. One important factor to consider is the validity of your passport. While most countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months, there are some that have a 3 months passport rule.
Other Countries with Passport Validity Requirements
U.s. citizens entering u.s. with a passport expiring in 6 months.
The six-month validity requirement does NOT apply to an American citizen using a U.S. passport to enter the United States or Canada. He/she may do so up until the date of expiration of the passport.
Even though many countries implemented the six-month validity rule, other restrictions are enforced to enter these countries. Some require a passport to have one clean page per stamp or at least one available sheet. Also, a visa is a requirement to enter some countries. Be aware of this significant document because without it, when it is required, you will not be allowed to board your flight or enter the country you plan to visit.
Having a passport with plenty of validity before travel is best and wise. Also, it is necessary to know some laws of the country you plan to visit to avoid any mishaps or know what to do when you are there.

Passport Validity for Travel to USA: What You Need To Know
12 Dec 14:59
Passport expiration date rules for USA are one of the main concerns when traveling to the States.
And there is a good reason for that since it can get your application denied or if you have already acquired it, the passport validity can still be a reason for authorities to not let you travel to the USA .
Keep in mind, that these rules on the passport expiry date are not the same for everyone who travels to the USA. Which means you have to make sure which requirements you are a subject to in order to understand if you need to obtain a new passport or if you still can travel with the one you hold.
TRAVELING TO THE UNITED STATES?
Do You Have U.S. ESTA VISA Travel Authorization? If You Have ESTA Application, Check if it is Still Valid!
When you travel to USA from UK, passport requirements are regulated by the US Visa Waiver Program and ESTA which is important to keep in mind when applying for travel authorization and planning your trip.
Do I need 6 months on my passport before expiry date to travel to USA?
Yes, when traveling to the USA you need at least 6 months of expiry date after the planned return date. However, this rule is different for citizens of some countries, for example, the UK. This will be covered in detail in the next chapter.
Passport Validity
Passport validity is one of the most important factors to keep in mind before traveling and even if many people forget about that, one of the most common questions regarding travel to USA is:
H ow long do you need on your passport to travel USA?
The answer is this!
When traveling to the USA, the general rule is to have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the planned time of return.
However, there are some countries, citizens of which can enjoy a bit more freedom regarding their passport expiry rules when traveling to the USA. For citizens of these countries, the passport validity must only cover the time of their intended stay in the States.
Countries who are subject to this rule are:
Algeria, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cote d’Ivoire, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Fiji, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Guyana, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Macedonia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Senegal, Serbia and Montenegro, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, Tuvalu, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom , Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vatican, Venezuela, Zimbabwe.
Which countries require 6 months of passport validity?
All of the countries which are not included in this list and are not under the specific rules regarding their citizen passport expiry dates are regulated by the 6-month passport validity law. Which means you have to make sure which of the rules apply to you before further planning your trip to the USA !
Passport Validity when traveling with ESTA
If you are traveling under the US Visa Waiver program , the travel authorization you need to acquire is an ESTA instead of a Visa. So remember, that you also need to pay attention to the ESTA validity date and not just your passport.
If you are a citizen of one of the countries listed above, the validity date of your passport must be at least the same as the date of your planned return from the US. This means that these rules are also the general travel passport requirements for USA from UK.
Keep in mind that the validity of your passport also affects the validity of your ESTA . This authorization is no longer valid when your passport validity ends. If the passport is valid for more than two years after obtaining an ESTA , the authorization will be valid for two years.
If the country you are a citizen is not listed above, you are a subject to the rule of 6 months of passport validity after exiting the US.
Passport Validity when traveling with Visa
There are no Visa requirements for UK citizens, therefore these passport validity rules do not apply to the UK citizens.
Passport validity for travel to USA when traveling with a Visa usually requires the passport to be valid for at least six months after the planned date of return. However, if you are a citizen of one of the countries listed above, the rules are slightly different.
In this case, the passport validity requires the expiry date to at least meet the date of planned return.
Usually, when traveling with a Visa, your passport expiry date could also influence your chances of obtaining a US Visa. Therefore make sure your passport is valid for a long enough period before applying for a Visa.
Also, keep in mind that your Visa is no longer valid after the passport expiry date. After that, you need to obtain a new Visa.
What to do if Passport expires soon
An upcoming passport expiry date is a common problem to those travelers who are affected by the list of which countries require 6 months of passport validity. Simply because they are more likely to need to renew their passport before being able to apply for a Visa.
But this checkup for passport validity also applies to people who are citizens of countries which are regulated by the US Visa Waiver Program.
Therefore it is good to know how long does it take to get a passport in the UK or any other country for that matter. In most cases, it takes a couple of days, but it can also be done in a single day. However, there are additional fees that you will have to cover if you are renewing your passport in the last moment before traveling.
It is important to understand that there are no Visa requirements for UK citizens since they are a subject of the VWP and need to acquire and ESTA. This also changes the passport validity rules, but that does not mean it is possible to travel with an expired passport!
Do you need a biometric passport to travel to USA?
It is highly important to remember that all travelers who are traveling under the USA Visa Waiver Program need to obtain an electronic passport since the usual, machine-readable passports, will not be accepted.
Make sure you can travel before applying for travel authorization
Remember that some sort of passport expiry rules apply to everyone who wishes to travel to the USA. Even if you need to obtain an ESTA instead of a Visa, there are still some rules that affect you.
This is why you should make sure your passport has a long enough validity time even before applying for travel authorization. This way you can be sure to avoid any misunderstandings and unneeded problems during the authorization process.
You should also learn more about traveling with two passports , to avoid any problems if you indeed have two citizenships.
For more specific information on expiry dates and process of renewing your passport, you should contact your local authorities.

Passports, visas and API
If you're looking to make a smooth start to your journey, you need to make sure you have the right documents, such as a valid passport and the relevant visas.
To help, we've summarised some of the key considerations and requirements here, but it's not a full list of all possible requirements around the world. It's your responsibility to ensure you have the right documents to be allowed to travel.
Passports and ID cards
To travel on an international flight your passport must:
- Be valid for the required time after your planned return date . This is often at least three or six months after the day you plan to leave your destination. Check the Expiry Date on your passport.
- Meet the specific passport validity requirements for your destination. Check the IATA Travel Centre for more information.
- Be signed by its owner. Please ensure each passport is signed with the owner's signature . You may be denied entry or fined in some countries for travelling with an unsigned passport. More information is available for UK passport holders at HM Passport Office .
If you are not an EU national and wish to travel on an international flight to an EU member state (except Ireland) or any of the following Schengen zones — Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, or Vatican City — your passport must:
- Have been issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country . Check the Date of Issue on your passport and see the UK Government advice for further information.
If you are not an EU national and wish to travel on an international flight to anywhere other than an EU member state (excluding Ireland) or one of the Schengen zones listed above , your passport must meet the entry requirements of the destination country. Please check the UK Government advice for entry requirements for specific countries.
Children's passports
Children need their own passports to travel internationally, including infants under two. Infant and children's passports are only valid for five years, so please check the expiry date before departure.
EU, EEA or Swiss national ID cards
These are are no longer accepted as valid documentation for entering the UK, unless you’re exempt. Please check the latest UK Government advice for more details.
Please note, it’s your responsibility to ensure you have valid documentation when you travel. If you fail to comply with these requirements, you may not be allowed to travel, or you may be refused entry at your destination and have to pay associated costs.
You do not require a passport to travel within the UK, but you will need to carry one type of photographic ID when travelling with us. Examples include:
- Valid passport
- Valid driving licence, either provisional or full
- Valid EU national identity card
- Valid armed forces identity card
- Valid police warrant card or badge
Children under the age of 16 do not need to show identification when travelling on domestic flights. The adult they are travelling with must travel with photographic identification and be able to confirm their identity.
Children aged 14 and 15 years who are flying alone will need to show identification when travelling on domestic flights. Find more information on the requirements for young flyers travelling alone, including a copy of our consent form.
If you are a citizen of the UK, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man and were born in these areas, you do not need a passport to travel between these destinations, but you do require some form of photographic identification, such as a driving licence.
All other travellers require a valid passport to travel between these destinations.
Processing times for passports vary but it may take six weeks or longer to receive a passport after applying, so we advise that you wait until your passport has arrived before making a booking. Many countries offer fast-track applications where required.
If you need a passport or need to renew an existing one you can apply directly to your nation’s passport office. In the UK, that’s the UK passport service .
If there is a place on your passport for you to sign, please sign your passport with your signature. Your passport is not valid until it is signed . For British passports, you can learn more from HM Passport Office .
If you’d like help with your application , British Airways has partnered with VisaCentral, a company that will do all of the hard work for you. VisaCentral can help with passport renewals and replacements, name changes, second passports and new passports for children. Plus, as a British Airways customer you’ll get a 30% discount on the service fees.
Visas and other travel documentation
How to check if you need a visa
Depending on your nationality and the purpose of your journey, you may need a visa, or an equivalent form of authorisation, for every country you enter as part of your journey — even if you are only in transit or connecting from one flight to another in the airport of that country without going through border control — known as a transit visa.
This is in addition to a valid passport.
There are several ways you can check if you need a visa:
Check if you need a visa via the IATA Travel Centre — it's free to check and also includes passport and health requirements, as well as customs, currency and airport information.
If you need a visa, our partner VisaCentral can help — it's free to check and they’ll tell you exactly what documents you need to get one. Plus, as a British Airways customer, you’ll get a 30% discount on VisaCentral service fees should you need help with an application.
Check if you need a transit visa to connect through the UK — even if you’re only connecting from one flight to another, you may need a transit visa, such as a Direct Airside Transit (DATV) visa or a Visitor in Transit visa, to connect through the UK.
Check if you need a visa via the Sherpa online search tool below . Sherpa can also help obtain many e-visas, and advise of other possible information you may need for your travels.
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
An ETA will soon be required for people travelling to the UK who do not need a visa, including children and babies. It will be electronically linked to your passport and will give you permission:
To visit the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or to study.
To visit the UK for up to 3 months on the Creative Worker visa concession .
To transit through the UK – including if you’re not going through the UK border control.
An ETA will be required from 15 November 2023 when travelling from certain countries, with more being added to the scheme over time. Please check if you require an ETA .
Read further information and apply for an ETA or watch more about ETA .
Please note that the sherpa widget will only display in the 'View as published mode' and provided the checkbox for the same is enabled in the page properties - Basic tab.
Please note that Sherpa is a third party service provider that may apply fees for such services. The information provided on this page is for information purposes only and could be subject to change at very short notice. It is your responsibility to check and observe all the health and entry requirements applicable to your journey and you should always check the latest travel guidance from your government before you travel and the guidance provided by the relevant public authorities of your destination. Failure to meet applicable requirements means that British Airways will not be able to carry you, and compensation and care and assistance provisions will not apply.
Entry requirements and other travel documents
If you're a citizen of a country covered by the Visa Waiver Programme (such as the UK) you are able to travel to the USA with an Electronic System Travel Authorisation (ESTA) instead of a visa.
Make sure you apply for your ESTA at least 72 hours before your departure. You may not be allowed to travel if you arrive at the airport without an ESTA.
You will need a valid e-Passport to use ESTA. These have a microchip symbol on their front cover. ESTAs are valid for multiple journeys for up to two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner.
Apply for an ESTA

Many countries require us to collect some passport and travel information about who's flying into their country. The information you provide is sent securely to the necessary government authorities.
You will need to supply some or all of the following details:
- your full name (as it appears on your passport)
- your date of birth
- your gender
- your nationality
- your passport number
- your passport expiry date
- the country that issued your passport
- your country of residence.
Additionally, when travelling to the US, you will need to provide:

- Traveler Redress Number if you have one (this enables travellers who have experienced problems entering the US to avoid future difficulties).
If you're a US citizen and have a 'Global Entry' number, you don't need to provide this as part of your API. When you arrive in the US your Global Entry status will be recognised when you use the dedicated Immigration kiosk.
Some governments require us to provide them with information from flight bookings, which will contain additional passenger details to those listed above.
You can add Advance Passenger Information to your booking on ba.com using Manage My Booking . If there is any information you need to provide, you'll see a red exclamation mark against the passenger information section at the top of the page.

Providing this information is voluntary; however, if you don't provide it, you may be subject to additional screening or denied transport or authorisation to enter the post-security area. TSA may share information you provide with law enforcement or intelligence agencies or others under its published system of records notice. Travel Schemes
If you are a national of one of the below countries you can join the 'Registered Traveller' scheme and enjoy faster entry to the UK, as long as you have a biometric passport.
When you apply, the UK Border Force carries out checks to see if you are eligible to join. If accepted, you won't need to fill out a landing card for the UK. You'll be able to enter the UK at the ePassport gates or the UK/EU lanes at several UK airports, including all London airports, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester.
UK citizens can get through US passport control faster by joining Global Entry, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) programme. The scheme allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travellers arriving in the United States. Benefits include:
- no processing queues
- no requirement to complete a paper customs declaration form
- reduced waiting times
- TSA Pre✓® Eligibility (faster, more efficient security screening at participating US airports).
Membership lasts for five years and the application process includes background checks (at a non-refundable cost of £42 payable to the UK government), online enrolment with the US Customs and Border Protection Agency (at a non-refundable cost of USD100) and attendance at a face to face interview at an official enrolment centre.
More about Global Entry and FAQs
We participate in the TSA Pre✓® programme for customers with a Known Traveller Number (KTN) departing from US airports. TSA Pre✓® is a faster, easier security screening process at US airports. Once enrolled, you will be able to speed through security without removing shoes, laptops, liquids, belts and light jackets.
Who is eligible?
- Members of the Global Entry scheme.
- US citizens and US lawful permanent residents enrolled in TSA Pre✓®, NEXUS or SENTRI.
- Canadian citizens who are members of NEXUS.
Enter your Global Entry, TSA Pre✓®, NEXUS or SENTRI membership number (your KTN) into your booking each time you travel to demonstrate your eligibility. You can add your KTN during online check-in via Manage My Booking on ba.com, at an airport desk or by contacting us .
Even if you are eligible for TSA Pre✓® as a member of a trusted traveller programme, TSA Pre✓® does not guarantee expedited screening.
Find out where TSA Pre✓® is available .
Where a TSA Pre✓® lane is not available, you can show your TSA Pre✓® boarding pass and may receive a form of expedited screening in a standard lane.
You can now submit an electronic arrival card via the Web Service and Mobile App before you arrive in Singapore. You will then be able to head directly to immigration clearance, allowing you to avoid unnecessary delays and save time at the airport.

Why Europeans will have to pay to travel to the UK from next year
Travellers visiting the UK, including those from the European Union, without a visa will need to apply for an online travel permit and pay a £10 fee (Rs 1098). The British government says the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) scheme will prevent ‘abuse’ of its immigration system read more
Those visiting the United Kingdom, including Europeans, without a visa will need to apply online for a travel permit before their journey. These new rules will come into effect next year for most countries.
The UK’s electronic travel authorisation (ETA) system, first announced for Qatar citizens, has been expanded to nationals of other countries, including those from the European Union (EU).
What is ETA, why do Europeans need it and why is it introduced? Let’s take a look.
What is ETA?
The ETA is a system introduced by the British government mandating travel permission for those who were eligible to travel to the country without a visa previously and are not a legal resident of the UK.
“Everyone wishing to travel to the UK – except British and Irish citizens – will need permission to travel in advance of coming here. This can be either through an Electronic Travel Authorisation or an eVisa,” the UK government says, as per Independent.
Travellers who want to enter the UK will have to pay a £10 fee (Rs 1098). According to UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, all visitors, including babies and children, to the country without a visa will require ETA, reported CNN . Irish citizens will be exempted from the new rules.
Currently, nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates need to apply for an ETA before reaching the UK. The ETA is no longer valid for Jordan nationals, who will have to apply for a visa to travel to the UK.
This £10 fee will be valid for multiple entries to the UK over a period of two years or until the date that the traveller’s passport expires, whichever is sooner. The ETA will be digitally linked to the traveller’s passport, as per The Telegraph.
The online travel permit will also be mandatory for those transiting through the UK.
Nationals from several countries including the United States, Canada and Japan can apply for the ETA from November this year. They will be allowed entry to the UK through the permit from January 8, 2025.
The programme will be extended to Europeans next March.
The ETA scheme will be implemented for the majority of overseas travellers by April 2 next year.
Why do Europeans need it?
Europeans will require the ETA to travel to the UK from next year. This measure comes in the wake of the UK leaving the EU in January 2020.
The free movement rights of those from the EU and European Economic Area – Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway – coming to the UK ended on 31 December 2020 as the Brexit transition period concluded.
The European Union will enforce a similar permit next year for non-EU travellers, including Britons. Under the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), travellers from non-EU countries will have to apply online before visiting the Schengen Area, which includes most EU countries.
They will have to pay a €7 (Rs 650) fee. The ETIAS, which will be linked to the traveller’s passport, will be valid for three years or until the visitor’s passport expires, reported Euronews.

What’s the need for ETA?
Immigration has become one of the key issues in the UK. The British government wants to cut migration and enhance border security.
The UK Home Secretary told the House of Commons in a statement, “Once fully rolled out, the ETA scheme will close the current gap in advance permissions and mean that for the first time, we will have a comprehensive understanding of those travelling to the UK.”
Cooper said the ETA will ensure “more robust security checks are carried out before people begin their journey to the UK”, which will help to prevent “abuse of our immigration system”.
The ETA requirement for transit passengers has been criticised. London Heathrow airport will become a challenging transit hub as even connecting passengers will need the travel permit.
Paul Charles, director of The PC Agency and former Virgin Atlantic communications director, told Independent : “Taxing transit is tantamount to failure. If other airports offer free transit then they will pick up market share.
“Airports should be zones of ease, enabling seamless travel. This proposed tax needs removing.”
According to the UK government, “Requiring those transiting to obtain an ETA will stop transit being a future loophole for people to use to avoid needing an ETA. This is in line with the US Esta scheme.”
The US first brought Esta or electronic travel authorisation in 2009. It costs $21 (Rs 1764) now and lasts two years.

The Six Month Validity Rule for U.S. Passports - List of Countries
Home » Passports » How to Obtain a U.S. Passport
Click for reliable expedited passport courier service .
The list is organized by continents with countries listed in alphabetical order. Be aware that many of the countries on the list also require a visa for entry.
Europe is absent from this list. Due to stricter border controls in many European countries, the US State Department recommends that American citizens traveling to the countries in the Schengen Area should have a passport with six months of remaining validity. That said, the official requirement is only three months validity . While the rules for entering the countries that are a part of the Schengen Agreement are slated to change with the introduction of the ETIAS visa waiver program in 2025, this is not expected to change the required amount of passport validity required for entry.
