Happily, the answer is 'Yes indeed', and while the Western Cape isn't quite in the same league as a bushveld escape to the Kruger National Park, you can certainly enjoy a taste of safari close to Cape Town. 

Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the 'Big Five' (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching offshore. 1.  aquila private game reserve.

At just over two hour's drive from the city, Aquila Private Game Reserve has earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad-bike. While sightings of lion, rhino, elephant and buffalo are all but guaranteed, you'll be extremely lucky to spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.

2.  Inverdoorn Game Reserve

A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, desert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. This conservation-focused establishment offers an opportunity to disconnect in the wilderness while searching for some of South Africa’s most exciting creatures. Rest your head in cosy, tented camps and relax in a pool with views over the veld and golden mountains on the horizon.

3.  Melozhori Private Game Reserve

This 2300-hectare predator-free wilderness is two hours from Cape Town, just off the highway to the ever-popular garden Route. Wherever you choose to stay, spend your days exploring Melozhori Private Game Reserve at your leisure. 4.  !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre

Less than an hour from Cape Town along the R27 ‘West Coast’ road, the !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre offers a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the San people of southern Africa, and the recent addition of luxury cottages and cabins has made it a perfect weekend escape.

But alongside the cultural insights you can also enjoy a ‘safari-lite’ experience here, with the 850-hectare reserve home to herds of eland, springbok, zebra, wildebeest and other small game. There’s plenty of birdlife too – keep a keen eye out for Yellow-billed kites and Jackal buzzards – and with no predators on the reserve you can happily hike, bike and run without worrying about toothy residents. Just keep an eye out for snakes. Or sign up for the 90-minute nature drives led by local guides, who will share the history of the reserve on an entertaining ramble that delivers superb views of the wild west coast.

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Stretching across 58 000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the fybos-clad hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

7.  Nuwejaars Wetlands

No visit to the Western Cape is complete without a trip to Cape Agulhas, the southern tip of Africa. And on the Agulhas Plains hardy winemakers make full use of the ancient soils and cooling sea winds to craft remarkable Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir. But after a tasting at Black Oystercatcher Wines, be sure to book a guided nature drive through the nearby Nuwejaars Wetlands .

This remarkable conservation project has seen 25 landowners, and the historic mission village of Elim, work together to conserve over 46 000 hectares of delicate wetlands in the region. Guided morning and afternoon nature drives allow travellers to discover this unique conservation area, where you can spot eland, buffalo, bontebok and hartebeest, while the deeper wetlands are home to thriving pods of hippopotamus. Twitcher? The Nuwejaars wetlands are home to more than 200 species, including rare Southern black korhaan and Secretary bird.

8.  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.

9.  Watch whales in Hermanus

Hermanus is one of the most popular tourist towns in the Western Cape's Overberg region, as famous for its seafront restaurants and clifftop walk as the annual visitors that flock here each winter. Whale watching is what brings the crowds, as Southern Right whales arrive to mate and calve from June through to November. You can spot them from the clifftop paths or join a boat tour and spend a day getting up close to these mighty marine mammals. Kayak tours offer another thrilling opportunity to see whales – and sometimes dolphins and seals – from the water.

10.  Goudkop Bush Camp

This low-key wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town, close to the famous beaches of Elands Bay. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Enjoy an afternoon exploring the ancient cave system with an experienced guide, or simply kick back and indulge in a sampling of local wines from the region.

Day 3 After breakfast travel over the Outeniqua Mountain Pass on route to the Wilderness National Park. An action-packed day begins with canoeing up the Touw River, surrounded by lush indigenous forest and abundant birdlife.

From there a 2-kilometer boardwalk hike reveals a cascading waterfall and rockpool where you can kick off your shoes and enjoy a dip.

The next stop is lunch and shopping in the heart of the garden route, Knysna. Travel up to the Knysna Heads to take in the views to either side, the Knysna River estuary to one side and the Indian Ocean to the other.

Wind down for the day at the coastal town of Sedgefield, perhaps with a little sand between your toes at one of its beaches before settling in for the night.

Day 4 After breakfast, Tsitsikamma National Park awaits, with a stop at Bloukrans Bridge where you can tap into your adventurous side with a 216-meter high bungee jump along the way. Hike, swim or take a wander across the suspension bridge upon reaching Tsitsikamma for the afternoon.

Leave the Garden Route behind and turn in for the night at the beautiful Avoca River Cabins, located in citrus and rose growing region within the Sundays River Valley.

Day 5 Get ready to visit the densest population of African elephants on earth, and home to the Big 5, at Addo Elephant National Park.

The 28,000 hectare reserve is teeming with life and offers plenty of opportunities to spot the many animals that call it home, while taking an optional 2-3 hour drive. The tour concludes with a drop off in Port Elizabeth at a location of your choice.

6-Day Garden Route and Addo Safari (Return)

A little bit daring and a whole lot more relaxing, this popular return tour from Cape Town covers all the highlights of the garden route and beyond.

Day 1 Leave Cape Town in the rearview mirror and head towards Hermanus, the whale watching capital of South Africa. A stop at Betty’s Bay is a welcomed opportunity to meet the colony of endangered African penguins in their cozy seaside habitat.

Pass through Hermanus for a spot of lunch and shopping, perhaps even a lucky whale sighting between the months of July to November. Continue onward to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas, to witness the meeting point of the cold Atlantic and warm Indian oceans.

Day 2 Head to the ‘Ostrich Capital of the World’, Oudtshoorn, where an afternoon lies in wait for exploring the ancient cave system at Cango Caves, or simply spend some time sampling local wines.

Day 3 With breakfast out the way, a trip over Outeniqua Mountain Pass leads to an afternoon of canoeing between the lush indigenous vegetation along the Touw River at Wilderness National Park. Explore the surrounds a little more on a 2-kilometer boardwalk hike that opens up to a cascading waterfall, where you can enjoy a dip in the inviting rock pool below.

Next stop, Knysna. Lunch and leisurely shopping lead on to a trip up to the Knysna Heads, where a remarkable viewpoint parts the Indian Ocean and Knysna River estuary to either side. Relish in the sun, sand and ‘vitamin sea’ while relaxing on one of the beautiful beaches nearby in Sedgefield for the remainder of the day.

Day 4 No garden route trip is complete without visiting the Tsitsikamma National Park for a hike, swim or walk across the suspension bridge. A quick stop on route at the world’s highest bungee jump bridge, Bloukrans, is an opportunity to tick off an item on your bucket list. But this one may just be for the daring few.

Day 5 With 2-3 hours at Addo Elephant National Park, there is plenty to do on this 28,000-hectare reserve, including the option of a game drive. Head back to the heart of the garden route to settle in for the evening in either Wilderness or Mossel Bay.

Day 6 After breakfast, stretch out on one of the beaches at Mossel Bay and soak up the sun or get your heart rate up on a hike along St. Blaize trail, contouring along the cliffs from the St. Blaize Lighthouse. If you aren’t quite ready for the tour to end, you could indulge in an optional tandem skydive or sandboarding adventure before returning to Cape Town.

Cape Town is a coastal city in South Africa that is crowned by the iconic Table Mountain. Cape Town is the epitome of art and culture, with a long history influenced by groups of people often referred to as the Cape Malay. To truly experience the Capetonian lifestyle, a visit to the colorful neighborhood called Bo-Kaap , also called the Malay Quarter, is a must do. Bo-Kaap is immediately recognizable for its brightly-colored and photogenic houses, but the other main draw is the Bo-Kaap Museum. The museum, housed in an 18th-century building, covers the history of the Cape Malay community in detail.

The V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions with an excellent selection of cultural and historical sights. The busy commercial harbor is a bustling venue with restaurants, pubs, craft markets, the Two Oceans Aquarium, and over 450 stores boasting local and international brands. The V&A Waterfront is also the departure point for the ferry to the famous Robben Island Museum.

The Cape Peninsula Route is spectacular with the major attractions being the African penguins at Boulders Beach, the Cape Point (the romantic meeting place of the mighty Atlantic and Indian oceans) and the Cape of Good Hope.

Table Mountain National Park is acclaimed as one of the “New Seven Wonders of Nature” and is a signification attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The view is breathtaking as you overlook the city bowl, V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, The Cape Flats and the Cape Peninsula.  

The Cape Winelands is made up of a collection of historic towns and Cape Dutch farmsteads. Stellenbosch, Constantia, Franschhoek, Paarl, Tulbagh, and Wellington are the major wine routes, producing well-regarded South African wines to the world. The Cape Winelands is also home to some of the finest restaurants in the Western Cape.

Hermanus is a seaside town southeast of Cape Town that offers phenomenal Southern Right whale watching. The whale season is generally during the months of June through November, however, Hermanus is an all year round destination, offering more than 300 activities including shark cage diving in Walker Bay, abseiling, treetop tours and quad biking.

Daily Tours - 

Get up close and personal with Africa's famous Big Five and other wild animals on our Full Day Safari Tour, a two and a half hour drive from Cape Town. As the Game Reserve is situated in the Western Cape, you will not need to worry about the risk of malaria. Enjoy some of the Cape's most unique flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes and wildlife all in one day! The elephants and lions have all been rescued by the team at the reserve, after encountering a virtual wipe out due to settlement and agricultural development. You will also find the cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre which was founded in 2001, home to numerous cheetahs.

Aquila Game Reserve

Enjoy a two-hour safari tour across the 10 000 ha game reserve in an open air 4x4 discovering the Big Five. As you enter, you may come across a herd of antelope before heading down towards the lions’ reserve. You will be amazed by the majestic sight of the male Cape Barbary lion which is a rare find! From thereon you will encounter an endless variety of antelope species, from the beautifully marked oryx, elands, wildebeests, threatened rhinos, springboks and herds of zebras. (2h)

The Ceres Fruit Valley

The early morning pick-up from your hotel will give you the chance to see all the beauty of Cape Town's landscapes in the beautiful colours of the morning light. We then head to the world-famous Ceres Valley, named after the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility, which will have you gazing into the beauty of stunning sceneries and plantations bathing in the beautiful valley encircled by a majestic mountain range. Ceres offers many nature walks, cherry-picking during season and a variety of diverse birdlife found in the unique Fynbos vegetation. In winter, you may encounter a magnificent sight of snow falling on the higher mountain regions, making Ceres Valley a highly popular attraction. (drive by)

The Klein Karoo

The Aquila Game Reserve is located in the Klein Karoo, one of the most magnificent areas in the Western Cape, bounded on the North by the Swartberg (Black Mountain), and on the South by the Langeberg and Outeniqua mountain chains. The semi desert natural region was first explored by European settlers in the late 17th century, who came across only Khoisan people living in this dry area. (drive by)

Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town

Welcome to the “Mother City,” where Mother Nature definitely shows off some of her very best handiwork. As you’re escorted from the airport to your hotel, tune into a guided orientation tour of Cape Town. Orientation briefing will outline all of your Cape Town options. Learn more about all this city offers here. Tonight, join the other smarTours travelers for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

*Depending on flight schedules, the welcome dinner may be moved to Day 3.

Day 2: Cape Town

Today’s all about exploring (and savoring!) this unique city. Join a local expert to see the highlights and charms of Cape Town. We’ll ascend via cable car to the top of Cape Town’s iconic landmark, Table Mountain, for the incredible city and bay views. Then you’ll have a chance to view and photograph Table Mountain from a distance from the historic, colorful neighborhood known as Bo-Kaap (the Malay Quarter). The final stop is a guided Diamond Experience where you learn about the journey of a diamond direct from South African mines to a finger. Our tour ends at the vibrant V&A Waterfront, where you can enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Relax at a café, sip a glass of South Africa’s renowned wine or browse local art and craft shops.

Note: Table Mountain Cable Car will be completing annual maintenance from July 15th–September 1st, 2024. During this period, we have replaced this experience with a visit to Signal Hill for views of the city and the Atlantic coast line as well as provided a voucher to the V&A Waterfront.

Day 3: Cape Town at Leisure

Delight in a day at leisure in Cape Town! Consider joining an Optional Tour to Cape Peninsula to see stunning seascapes, the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, Cape Point, and Boulders Beach for penguin colonies sightings. This evening, consider an optional Gold Dinner where we can experience an African-themed restaurant with a 14-course meal.

Day 4: Cape Town

So many options! Today is at leisure for independent exploration, shopping, or relaxing. Go to the beach, take an optional excursion to the scenic Winelands, or take the plunge with a thrilling great white shark cage diving excursion. You may also use your free time to visit Robben Island and see where Nelson Mandela spent nearly two decades in captivity.

Day 5: Cape Town/Dinokeng Private Game Reserve

After breakfast this morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Johannesburg. You’ll be met at the airport and driven to your lodge. Named for the Boekenhout tree which is indigenous to the area, the Mongena Private Game Lodge offers an outstanding bush safari within the Dinokeng Game Reserve. Guests are often delighted to meet the tame zebras, nyalas and springbucks which roam and reside within the main camp. Enjoy some time to freshen up and relax or consider participating in one of the reserve’s optional activities. This evening, enjoy dinner at the camp’s restaurant.

Day 6: Dinokeng Private Game Reserve

This morning’s early morning game drive begins at sunrise. As a private game reserve, there are no public roads, you’ll have an opportunity to go off-roading, and you’ll have fewer safari vehicles to compete with for game viewing. With both its diverse terrain and vegetation, the Dinokeng Game Reserve offers the chance to see both browsing and grazing species. Search for the Big Five which include lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo! You may also see some of the reserve’s other residents including cheetah, brown hyena, giraffe, zebra, kudu, impala, waterbuck, wildebeest, hippo, crocodile, the endangered blue crane, and more! After your early morning drive, enjoy a buffet breakfast. You’ll have some time at leisure to participate in the game reserve’s optional activities. This afternoon enjoy a late afternoon game drive and high tea before returning to the lodge. This evening enjoy dinner at your lodge.

Day 7: Depart Dinokeng Private Game Reserve

After your early morning game drive and a buffet breakfast, we'll depart for Johannesburg Airport, stopping along the way at Cambanos Curios, known for its large and varied selection of souvenirs and African goods, for any last-minute souvenirs and gifts. Our tour comes to an end as we arrive at Johannesburg airport.

Full Day Cape Peninsula Tour

Stunning seascapes, spectacular gardens—and penguins? Our day on Cape Peninsula is truly extraordinary, as we pass steep mountains, secluded coves and sweeping beaches before a stop at a Hout Bay fishing village. Then it’s on to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, home to baboons, rheboks and Cape Mountain zebras. At Cape Point, soak up the majestic views at the confluence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We will head to the most remarkable of the mainland African penguin colonies, Boulders Beach (admission inside park not included) in Simon’s Town, with over 2,500 birds. But we’re not done yet! We’ll finish the day at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on the slopes of Table Mountain. Full Day Great White Shark Cage Diving

On this full-day adventure, you'll depart from Kleinbaai and enjoy 2-4 hours at sea, depending on how often the sharks visit the boat, diving and viewing from the cage. The cage holds five people at a time and each person can spend about 20 minutes in the cage! All scuba equipment, including 7mm wetsuits, are provided and you don't need a scuba license to cage dive. If you prefer not to go in the cage, you won't be missing out! You'll enjoy a picnic lunch onboard and a hot homemade soup at the lodge upon return. Hot showers and dry towels are available. This excursion is all about education and developing a new perception of the great white shark so come with all your questions! This tour is weather permitting.

Note: This tour operates on the last day in Cape Town, and it is not possible to do Robben Island or Winelands if you participate in this optional activity. Please also note that this tour must be cancelled at least 24 hours prior to departure, otherwise 100% cancellation fees will apply. In addition, if bad weather prevents you from going to sea, you will be informed and given a full refund. If strong winds pick up while at sea and a return to shore is required for your safety, you will not be entitled to a refund. In addition, due to variable weather conditions and variable shark activity, diving may not always be possible and is therefore not guaranteed.

E ast African languages may not be your forte, but we all know one word in Swahili: safari . Though it actually translates as ‘journey’, we understand safari to mean a trip seeking animals in the wild. But there’s more to it than ticking off the Big Five on an African plain; safaris can just as easily focus on creatures much closer to home.

Whether it’s turtles in Turkey , birds on the Black Sea or even red squirrels and whales here in Britain, safaris are about heading out into nature and relishing the moment.

The catch is that, as a rule of thumb, wildlife thrives better in more remote regions, so getting there can be costly. But if you travel off-season , skip the luxury lodges, and choose destinations with favourable exchange rates , your bucket-list wildlife encounter need not have a budget-busting price tag. Here’s our pick of this season’s most affordable safaris.

Circle of life

Kenya is the ultimate safari hotspot (even if the exchange rate isn’t on our side right now). Take in Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and the Maasai Mara on a week-long tour to spot the Big Five (buffalos, elephants, lions, leopards and rhinos) among countless other creatures (from £1,339pp, excluding flights; intrepidtravel.com ). Elsewhere, save money by spending only part of your trip in the wild. Three nights in Senegal’s Fathala Reserve (with elands, warthogs and monkeys) combined with a four-night Gambian beach break costs from £1,749pp, including flights ( gambia.co.uk ).

Escape to the Cape

South Africa offers great value for money. Untravelled Paths’ nine-night Western Cape trip blends a safari lodge stay with Cape Town’s penguins, the winelands of Franschhoek, and Plettenberg Bay’s beaches from £1,569pp, excluding flights ( untravelledpaths.com ). Or to keep costs really low, Bushbaby Travel recommends racking up the Big Seven (the usual Five, plus whales and sharks) by combining a Cape Town self-catering stay with a self-drive safari in Pilanesberg National Park. Bear necessities

Self-driving also cuts the cost of a Canada adventure – and all the more so when your vehicle doubles up as your hotel . This two-week motorhome holiday from regional specialist Bon Voyage covers all your essentials (itinerary planning, campsite bookings, on-the-road assistance) as well as topping and tailing the trip with a city stay in Vancouver . En route, spot eagles, beavers, moose, elk, bears (both black and grizzly) and orcas. From £3,995pp, including flights ( bon-voyage.co.uk ).

Burning bright

Tigers are the animal icons of the Indian subcontinent. Seek them on Distant Journeys’ 16-night Indian Wildlife Adventure, which chalks up 10 game drives across five national parks, including Kanha, Pench and Gir. Jackals, jungle cats, spiral-horned blackbuck and Asiatic lions also feature. From £3,295pp, including flights ( distantjourneys.co.uk ). Or head to Sri Lanka for a family safari to Yala and Uda Walawe National Parks to spy elephants and sloth bears before rounding things off at the beach. Two weeks from £3,185pp, excluding flights ( reefandrainforest.co.uk ).

Crossroads of continents

Turkey sits where Europe, Asia and Africa overlap. This means that, while much of its wildlife may look familiar, there are also more exotic elements. Spot the likes of white-breasted kingfishers, blue-cheeked bee-eaters and two kinds of turtle on Naturetrek’s week-long Central Turkey Wildlife & History small-group tour (from £3,295pp, including flights; naturetrek.co.uk ). Got three weeks to spare? A deep-dive into Turkey’s Aegean Coast maybe for you (from £5,035pp, including flights; greentours.co.uk ). Delta discovery

The Via Pontica is an avian superhighway that eagles, storks and pelicans follow on their spring migration via the Bosporus and Black Sea coast. The destination for many of them is Romania’s Danube Delta, where vast wetlands form one of Europe’s last intact ecosystems. Baltic bargain

Further north again, you’ll find more big mammals (including bears) in Estonia. Around half of this Baltic nation is forested, so there’s plenty of habitat for wildlife to thrive – and prices here are lower than you’d pay for similar experiences in Norway or Sweden. Windows on the Wild’s self-guided tour takes in three national parks, providing a mix of landscapes inhabited by wolf, bear and lynx. Close to home

For the cheapest wildlife fixes of all, save money on travel by staying in the UK, home to some of Europe’s best seabird colonies and a quarter of all whale and dolphin species. Spy some of the latter in Yorkshire on a five-hour Seabirds & Whales cruise (£90, yorkshirecoastnature.co.uk ); or make it more about peregrines and polecats in Wales ( welshwildlifebreaks.co.uk ). And for a proper immersion in nature, meet stags, red squirrels and golden eagles on a three-night Cairngorms winter walking holiday (from £845, adventuretoursuk.com ).
