Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by travellers planning a trip to the Mother City. Happily, the answer is 'Yes indeed', and while the Western Cape isn't quite in the same league as a bushveld escape to the Kruger National Park, you can certainly enjoy a taste of safari close to Cape Town.

Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the 'Big Five' (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching offshore. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

The best safaris near Cape Town

1.  aquila private game reserve.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

At just over two hour's drive from the city, Aquila Private Game Reserve has earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad-bike. While sightings of lion, rhino, elephant and buffalo are all but guaranteed, you'll be extremely lucky to spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.

2.  Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, desert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. This conservation-focused establishment offers an opportunity to disconnect in the wilderness while searching for some of South Africa’s most exciting creatures. Rest your head in cosy, tented camps and relax in a pool with views over the veld and golden mountains on the horizon.

3.  Melozhori Private Game Reserve

Melozhori Private Game Reserve

This 2300-hectare predator-free wilderness is two hours from Cape Town, just off the highway to the ever-popular garden Route. Offering a choice of exclusive-use accommodation options, choose between contemporary pod houses to luxury treehouses offering idyllic romantic hideaways. The Lodge is a more lavish and exclusive option offering four expansive suites and a fully-catered experience.

Wherever you choose to stay, spend your days exploring Melozhori Private Game Reserve at your leisure. Because it’s predator-free – although elusive Cape leopards have been captured by camera traps here – you can hike, bike and walk in safety, while keeping an eye out for the 129 bird species and 38 species of game that call the reserve home. In the evening, you might be lucky enough to spot black-backed jackal and bat-eared foxes. If you’d rather not go it alone, guided nature drives are available.

4.  !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre

!Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre

Less than an hour from Cape Town along the R27 ‘West Coast’ road, the !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre offers a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the San people of southern Africa, and the recent addition of luxury cottages and cabins has made it a perfect weekend escape.

But alongside the cultural insights you can also enjoy a ‘safari-lite’ experience here, with the 850-hectare reserve home to herds of eland, springbok, zebra, wildebeest and other small game. There’s plenty of birdlife too – keep a keen eye out for Yellow-billed kites and Jackal buzzards – and with no predators on the reserve you can happily hike, bike and run without worrying about toothy residents. Just keep an eye out for snakes. Or sign up for the 90-minute nature drives led by local guides, who will share the history of the reserve on an entertaining ramble that delivers superb views of the wild west coast.

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Stretching across 58 000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the fybos-clad hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

7.  Nuwejaars Wetlands

Nuwejaars Wetlands

No visit to the Western Cape is complete without a trip to Cape Agulhas, the southern tip of Africa. And on the Agulhas Plains hardy winemakers make full use of the ancient soils and cooling sea winds to craft remarkable Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir. But after a tasting at Black Oystercatcher Wines, be sure to book a guided nature drive through the nearby Nuwejaars Wetlands .

This remarkable conservation project has seen 25 landowners, and the historic mission village of Elim, work together to conserve over 46 000 hectares of delicate wetlands in the region. Guided morning and afternoon nature drives allow travellers to discover this unique conservation area, where you can spot eland, buffalo, bontebok and hartebeest, while the deeper wetlands are home to thriving pods of hippopotamus. Twitcher? The Nuwejaars wetlands are home to more than 200 species, including rare Southern black korhaan and Secretary bird.

8.  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.

9.  Watch whales in Hermanus

Watch whales in Hermanus

Hermanus is one of the most popular tourist towns in the Western Cape's Overberg region, as famous for its seafront restaurants and clifftop walk as the annual visitors that flock here each winter. Whale watching is what brings the crowds, as Southern Right whales arrive to mate and calve from June through to November. You can spot them from the clifftop paths or join a boat tour and spend a day getting up close to these mighty marine mammals. Kayak tours offer another thrilling opportunity to see whales – and sometimes dolphins and seals – from the water.

10.  Goudkop Bush Camp

Goudkop Bush Camp

This low-key wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town, close to the famous beaches of Elands Bay. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, and look for kudu, eland and zebra and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.

Fantastic experience with a great guide. Thank you!
Our driver KT was amazing. His exceptional knowledge on culture, demography and even botany took away the monotony of the endless miles from Capetown. Best Time to Go on Safari in Cape Town

There is no best time of year to go on a South African safari, however, there are times of year to suit everyone’s preferences. Cape Town summer takes place between November and February. During this time it gets very hot during the day – this often means that the animals sleep during the sweltering days. During winter it tends to be cold but it’s easy enough to keep warm during the day.

When going on safari tours, we always recommend going in the early morning or in the evening. This is when you can expect to see most animal activity.

Explore the surrounds a little more on a 2-kilometer boardwalk hike that opens up to a cascading waterfall, where you can enjoy a dip in the inviting rock pool below.

Next stop, Knysna. Lunch and leisurely shopping lead on to a trip up to the Knysna Heads, where a remarkable viewpoint parts the Indian Ocean and Knysna River estuary to either side. Relish in the sun, sand and ‘vitamin sea’ while relaxing on one of the beautiful beaches nearby in Sedgefield for the remainder of the day.

Day 4 No garden route trip is complete without visiting the Tsitsikamma National Park for a hike, swim or walk across the suspension bridge. A quick stop on route at the world’s highest bungee jump bridge, Bloukrans, is an opportunity to tick off an item on your bucket list. But this one may just be for the daring few.

Return Full-Day Sea Safari from Cape Town to Gansbaai

Escape the city for a one-day adventure safari of a different kind.

Take in the beautiful natural scenery while heading along the coastline to Gansbaai. Watch the African penguins waddling around at Stony Point or pay a visit to Harold Porter National Botanical Garden.

Set between the mountain and sea, the Botanical Garden boasts waterfalls, amber pools, nature trails, and exquisite cultivated natural fynbos.

Onward to Gansbaai, enjoy taking in the majestic beauty of De Kelders and the lengths of pristine beaches before arriving in Walkers Bay for a 2-hour marine Big 5 sea safari aboard a purpose built sea safari boat.

After working up an appetite, lunch in Hermanus concludes the afternoon with the opportunity to browse the many market stalls and boutique shops to pick up a special memento.

The drive back presents the perfect excuse to make a pit stop at the well loved Peregrine Farm Stall in Grabouw, with a wide selection of quality local produce and the most delicious sweet and savoury pies to enjoy on the hour long ride home.

Cape Grace

Cape Town is a coastal city in South Africa that is crowned by the iconic Table Mountain. Named as one of the “Best 20 Cities in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler, Cape Town brings together cultures, cuisines and gorgeous landscapes. The “mother city” is home to award-winning wineries, fascinating people, and a vast selection of adventure experiences, including shark cage diving, hiking, segway tours, and close-up encounters with seals, whales and African penguins. Cape Town also boasts beautiful beaches and a popular waterfront promenade that boasts an entertainment complex with a variety of restaurants and retail outlets.

Cape Town is a popular tourist destination all year round.

Peak season is regarded to be in the summer between mid-December and early January.  Although February and March are also hot, there is a good chance that you will experience the howling southeasterly wind.  April is usually gorgeous: the temperatures are balmy, the light softer, the wind is dormant and the sunsets are spectacular.

Winter is the wet season and sometimes starts in May, more often June/July and often lasts right into September. Sunny days alternate with light rains.

Catch the best land-based whale-watching in the world from June to November when the southern right whales migrate to calve and nurse

Cape Town is the epitome of art and culture, with a long history influenced by groups of people often referred to as the Cape Malay. To truly experience the Capetonian lifestyle, a visit to the colorful neighborhood called Bo-Kaap , also called the Malay Quarter, is a must do. Bo-Kaap is immediately recognizable for its brightly-colored and photogenic houses, but the other main draw is the Bo-Kaap Museum. The museum, housed in an 18th-century building, covers the history of the Cape Malay community in detail.

The V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions with an excellent selection of cultural and historical sights. The busy commercial harbor is a bustling venue with restaurants, pubs, craft markets, the Two Oceans Aquarium, and over 450 stores boasting local and international brands. The V&A Waterfront is also the departure point for the ferry to the famous Robben Island Museum.

The Cape Peninsula Route is spectacular with the major attractions being the African penguins at Boulders Beach, the Cape Point (the romantic meeting place of the mighty Atlantic and Indian oceans) and the Cape of Good Hope.

Table Mountain National Park is acclaimed as one of the “New Seven Wonders of Nature” and is a signification attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The view is breathtaking as you overlook the city bowl, V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, The Cape Flats and the Cape Peninsula.

The Cape Winelands is made up of a collection of historic towns and Cape Dutch farmsteads. Stellenbosch, Constantia, Franschhoek, Paarl, Tulbagh, and Wellington are the major wine routes, producing well-regarded South African wines to the world. The Cape Winelands is also home to some of the finest restaurants in the Western Cape.

Hermanus is a seaside town southeast of Cape Town that offers phenomenal Southern Right whale watching. The whale season is generally during the months of June through November, however, Hermanus is an all year round destination, offering more than 300 activities including shark cage diving in Walker Bay, abseiling, treetop tours and quad biking.

Leigh Ann was helpful and friendly
Leigh Ann was helpful and friendly. We were grateful for her help arranging our time in the hotel
Would highly recommend
Leigh-Ann has been extremely helpful and responsive - very easy to work with. I have had plenty of questions to which she has quickly responded. She is organized and communicates clearly. I would highly recommend using her services for Africa travel.
Shann is the best!
Shann helped me along the way, I never made it easy [lots and lots of questions and then, co-ordinating everybody]! We are looking forward to visiting and having a wonderful experience with a close family friend!

Reassuring and responsive
It's a little unnerving to make plans with a company half way around the world. But John was very responsive to my questions and dealt quickly with any problems. He was courteous and helpful. It was a seamless process to plan our trip and I would recommend him and Safari.com.
This luxury service experience was… first-Class Service with a Smooth Landing
This luxury service experience was fantastic, especially for a first-timer like me. My consultant went above and beyond to find exactly what I was looking for. They were incredibly professional and made the whole process very smooth. There was a bit of a wait for confirmation, which is something I'm used to getting instantly when booking myself. However, this is a minor detail compared to the incredible service and personalized tour I received. The wait was completely worth it in the end! Thanks to this company, I had a truly exceptional experience. As a first-time user of this kind of service, I couldn't have asked for a better provider. Highly recommended!

Here’s your chance to purchase some local wines!

Gold Dinner

safari trips from cape town

  • $72 per person

There is no better way to experience an African-themed restaurant than the Gold restaurant. They promise a "taste safari" that includes flavors from Cape Town and all over the stunning continent. How does the evening go there? The evening kicks off with a djembe drumming session followed by a hand-washing ceremony. Then you delve into a 14-course meal, each one from a different African country.

Full Day Great White Shark Cage Diving

safari trips from cape town

  • $259 , including breakfast, packed lunch and transfers

On this full-day adventure, you'll depart from Kleinbaai and enjoy 2-4 hours at sea, depending on how often the sharks visit the boat, diving and viewing from the cage. The cage holds five people at a time and each person can spend about 20 minutes in the cage! All scuba equipment, including 7mm wetsuits, are provided and you don't need a scuba license to cage dive. If you prefer not to go in the cage, you won't be missing out! You'll enjoy a picnic lunch onboard and a hot homemade soup at the lodge upon return. Hot showers and dry towels are available. This excursion is all about education and developing a new perception of the great white shark so come with all your questions! This tour is weather permitting.

Note: This tour operates on the last day in Cape Town, and it is not possible to do Robben Island or Winelands if you participate in this optional activity. Please also note that this tour must be cancelled at least 24 hours prior to departure, otherwise 100% cancellation fees will apply. In addition, if bad weather prevents you from going to sea, you will be informed and given a full refund. If strong winds pick up while at sea and a return to shore is required for your safety, you will not be entitled to a refund. In addition, due to variable weather conditions and variable shark activity, diving may not always be possible and is therefore not guaranteed.

4 South African Safari Destinations You Can Get to from Cape Town

By Mary Holland

Aquila Private Game Reserve

With the launch of United Airlines’ new direct flight to Cape Town from Newark this December, getting to South Africa’s seaside city is becoming significantly less arduous. Previously, a trip to Cape Town usually involved a layover in Johannesburg , which meant travelers to South Africa would often split their time between Cape Town in the southwest and a safari in the Kruger National Park in the northeast. But just because you can now fly straight to Cape Town doesn’t mean you have to pick between a safari experience and a waterfront one. Travelers who are tight on time and vacation days can find great game-watching near Cape Town , where a number of wildlife and nature reserves offer excellent excursions. Bonus: they’re all malaria-free.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve , about 3.5 hours from Cape Town, is one of the only reserves in the world where free-roaming white lions can be spotted in the wild, alongside cheetahs, elephants, and zebras. Located in the arid Little Karoo at the base of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the 143,000-acre reserve has four lodges to choose from (we recommend Dwyka Tented Lodge , a chic tented camp set in a rock amphitheater). With so much open space and so few lodges, Sanbona is the perfect place to disconnect.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Dwyka

A view of one of the four camps at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Aquila Private Game Reserve

If time is short, Aquila Private Game Reserve , a quick two-hour drive inland from Cape Town, offers visitors half- or full-day safaris. For a better chance of seeing the Big Five (that's lions, leopards, rhinos , elephants, and Cape buffalos), checking in overnight at the unfussy thatched Aquila Lodge is recommended. Visitors can also spend time with rehabilitated animals at the Animal Rescue Centre on the reserve.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

At Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, about two hours south along the coast, you won’t see lions or cheetahs. Instead, you’ll be immersed in flora and marine life. Located on 6,200 acres of flawless wilderness that runs along the coast towards Gansbaai, you'll want to spend a day or two here, as opposed to the quick Aquila trip. Guests staying at the reserve’s modern Forest Lodge can spot over 800 types of plant species (like proteas and other fynbos that can be found nowhere else on earth), as well as antelope and whales calving in the nearby bay (whale season is usually from June to November).

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

While Gondwana Private Game Reserve might be further afield (around four hours away from Cape Town), the picturesque drive along the coastal Garden Route is certainly part of the journey. Once there, guests can check into Kwena Lodge , a collection of modern huts, or the solar-powered tented camp , where you can glamp among the fynbos. Safari drives to see the Big Five are a highlight, but other fun activities on offer include mountain biking and hiking.

Things to do in Botswana & Cape Town

Vibrant Cape Town is rich in natural beauty, history and cultural experiences. Ascend iconic Table Mountain via aerial cable car for breathtaking panoramic views of the city and two oceans while doing a scenic loop walk at the top. Hike to Lion's Head or Signal Hill for panoramic vistas of the city and Table Mountain. Take a ferry to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and learn about South Africa’s history. Explore the shops, restaurants and entertainment options at the V&A Waterfront, where you can take a boat ride, visit the Two Oceans Aquarium, and the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island Museum.

After a short flight to Maun in Botswana, you’ll be whisked off to your lodge airstrip by an efficient bush plane (these are like buses in the Botswana Bush). You’ll want to remember to pack light and use only soft-sided luggage for these short flights (lodges offer complimentary same day laundry service). You’ll be picked up from the airstrip by your lodge safari vehicle and welcomed at your comfortable lodge or tented camp accommodations, which include electricity and private bathrooms with hot water showers — some even have bathtubs and private plunge pools! All meals and game drives will be included with your stay, but you may want to add in a scenic helicopter safari or other bespoke experiences.

From Cape Town, drive a bit away from the city center to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garde n to see over 7,000 plant species and diverse flora. See the adorable African penguins up close at Boulders Beach. Drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive, a scenic coastal drive offering breathtaking ocean views and dramatic cliffs or catch some waves at Muizenberg Beach.

Experience the world-renowned wine regions of Stellenbosch or Franschhoek by stopping by for wine tastings or an al-fresco lunch or stay a few days at one of the beautiful wine estates for a culinary and wine focused retreat. A few days at the Delaire Graff Estate enjoying fine wines, luxurious accommodations with private plunge pools, an amazing art collection and spa and stellar cuisine would be a trip highlight. Or opt for a magical stay at one of the upscale farm cottages at Babylonstoren, a working farm with gorgeous vegetable gardens, lifestyle shops, soap factory, essential oil distillery, Juicery, unique experiences and workshops including olive oil making, fly fishing, wine tastings and more. For another fun experience, take the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which covers eight wine estates in the picturesque Franschhoek Winelands Valley.

Places to eat & drink in Botswana & Cape Town

Cape Town's culinary scene offers diverse options, from waterfront stunners to hidden gems. Don’t miss Fyn for elevated Japanese influenced African cuisine in a beautiful space. Kloof Street House charms with weekend brunches and summer dinners, while The Granary Cafe at the Silo Hotel boasts a warm, sophisticated ambiance, inventive cocktails, harbor views and contemporary cuisine. The Test Kitchen Fledgelings offers innovative cuisine, a six-course tasting menu and wine pairings. Waterside at the V&A waterfront tempts with its quayside location. Belly of the Beast is a hidden gem known for innovative dishes, and Pot Luck Club serves Asian-inspired fare with stunning city and mountain panoramas. Or enjoy the stunning scenery along Chapman’s Peak Drive to Chefs Warehouse at Tintswalo Atlantic if you can snag a reservation at this popular restaurant and hotel.

If Maun is your jumping off point for the bush flight to your lodge, you can grab a quick snack or lunch at the Duck Cafe Bar a short walk away from the airport.

Need to Know

Planning an African safari may seem daunting as there are many factors at play. From navigating seasonal weather patterns to selecting luxury accommodations that perfectly match your wildlife viewing aspirations, a qualified travel advisor is your key to easy planning and a seamless and unforgettable journey. You’ll be guided through every step, ensuring your African adventure surpasses your expectations. I recommend South Africa for first time travelers to Africa. Victoria Falls can also be added to a South Africa and Botswana itinerary (go February through June for the best viewing). For further exploration, travel to East Africa to see the great migration. June through October is the dry season and peak wildlife viewing months, but wildlife can be viewed year-round. May and November, shoulder season, offer good viewing with fewer crowds in the more popular areas.

Unveiling the magic of Africa requires a trusted travel advisor with exceptional local connections, granting you access to a curated network of preferred partners across the continent, ensuring your dream African adventure becomes a reality with ease and minimal stress.

Imagine: VIP airport meet and greets with assistance through customs and immigration, priority access at iconic landmarks like Table Mountain and private transportation whisking you away to breathtaking destinations. This seamless experience extends to the very heart of your journey – our local partners curate stays at the finest luxury hotels and safari lodges, all while championing sustainable travel and conservation practices. Their unwavering commitment to preserving the land, wildlife and communities is evident in every detail, a philosophy I deeply admire. With expert guidance and a focus on responsible travel, your experience will be elevated throughout your travels in Africa. They say you can leave Africa but Africa never leaves you... you'll understand why when you have witnessed the vast vistas and stunning sunsets, seen how the circle of life works as you witness animal behavior on your game drives and have been touched by the warm hospitality of Africa.

Cape Town Travel Guide: Where To Stay, Eat Drink And Safari In The South African City

C ape Town is a cultural melting pot, increasingly celebrated for its art, food and fashion, as well as being a natural wonder, home to stunning scenery - mostly associated with the ever-dominating Table Mountain that looks out over the city - incredible land and ocean wildlife, which offer the opportunity to get up close with safari options and beautiful beaches just a stone's throw from the metropolis.

Though it is a 12-hour flight from London, it has just a one-hour time difference meaning that it is far enough away to feel like you're exploring somewhere totally different and yet there is no jet lag to acclimatise to. This makes it an ideal long-haul location , especially if you're wanting to escape when the temperatures drop in the UK and start heating up in Cape Town (the hottest months of the year are January to March). Plus, there's no visa requirements for UK citizens.

All in all, it's very straightforward as far as far-away adventures go. Unlike other long haul trips where you might opt for multi-destination holidays to justify the lengthy travel time, there isn’t the need to do this in Cape Town. It has everything - food, beach, nature, adventure and wine - all within a short radius.

Sold yet? You're not the only one. It’s no surprise that in the aftermath of the pandemic, people have flocked to the African city, with January to June 2023 exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 104%, welcoming 1.4 million international visitors. Most visitors come from the UK, with an estimated 70,000 British tourists opting for Cape Town as their holiday destination in the first four months of 2023 alone.

Here's everything you need to know, from hotels to restaurants to safari in Cape Town:

Hotels in Cape Town

The Silo Hotel

Found in the trendy V&A waterfront area of the city, this former grain factory offers stunning 360° views of Table Mountain to across the water of Robben Island. An ideal city hotel, the rooms have everything you need and its delicious breakfast is first-class, setting you up perfectly for a day of sightseeing and exploring. The rooftop sky terrace is a must-visit for guests. In the winter, enjoy the view while cosying up with a blanket and glass of wine from the bar. In the summer, make use of the pool, which can also be found up there.

As well as boasting its own art collection - you can also have a private guided art tour by their in-house resident expert - the hotel is found on top of the Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa, which is home to a stunning collection of art from across South Africa and the continent.

The One & Only

The Cape Town edition of the luxury chain has more of a resort feel (some rooms are accessible via a bridge over the canal where a resident otter lives), which is a great choice for travellers who like to add an element of R&R to their city escape. The rooms are minimalist, but with clear African influences on its design, such as printed curtains, beaded ornaments and natural wood decor.

Outside of the room, you can unwind in the spa, found on its own man-made island, where a pre or post-flight massage is definitely encouraged or visit the resort's wine studio for a private wine tasting session by their own expert sommelier sampling the best wine in the Cape Town region, accompanied by a delicious charcuterie board. For dining, the all-day food and drink site, Vista Bar, sits directly opposite Table Mountain for unparalleled views. The One & Only also boasts a Nobu restaurant, which until recently was the only posting of the famed Japanese eatery on the continent (Chef Nobu and Robert De Niro opened up their second African restaurant in Marrakech in spring 2023). The concierge can help arrange activities with excursions, including whale watching, hikes and even shark dives offered.

Restaurants in Cape Town

Cape Town has really put itself on the map for its dining options in recent years, with a huge variety of restaurants. From modern takes on South African cuisine to full gastronomic experiences, the city has something for everyone. As a pescatarian, there's a huge amount of non-meat options, too. Plus, Ubers are a super reliable, cheap and easy way to navigate the city and fit in as many eateries as possible.

New for 2023 is Salon , the sister restaurant of the world-renowned Pot Luck Club (and found just one floor below), which offers incredible multi-course tasting menus based on all the places across the world where chef Luke Dale-Roberts has worked. Salon's take on the Singapore Chilli, Malaysian Laksa and twist on the traditional South African Malva pudding to finish off our dinner are highlights.

Another must-visit restaurant for a full multi-course and wine-paired culinary experience is the exclusive Salsify at the Roundhouse (recently named Africa's best landmark restaurant by the World Culinary Awards), whose setting overlooks Camps Bay in one direction (which is worth a visit in itself. Head to the beach just before sunset for stunning views of the ocean in this quaint surfer setting) and Lion's Head in the other. Salsify offers a lengthy ten-course chef's menu (we loved the line fish), where for every course one of the kitchen's chefs will bring it to your table and talk you through the dish.

For a lunch or dinner option in one of the cooler parts of the city, try the new spot Club Kloof . The Italian-inspired menu specialises in small plates with Mediterranean influence. We recommend the Mac and Cheese Arancino and Mozarella-Stuffed Pizza Fritta paired with an Aperol Spritz, of course. The brightly-tiled interiors make for a dreamy dining setting, too.

Speaking of interiors, Upper Union is another eatery where the food is elevated by the stylised decor of the building. In the heart of Cape Town’s Kloof Street district, it is an interiors lover's dream thanks to the emerald, black and gold modern twist on the traditional Victorian heritage building. At Upper Union, you can opt for the chef's menu of a big main meal with sides (headed up by chef Amori Burger) or a sharing-style menu. Whichever you choose, pair it with a cocktail from the mixologist's menu of bespoke drinks.

Day trips from Cape Town

There is so much to see and visit in Cape Town. So much so that you probably won't get to do it all. But here are some of the essentials that you should try to tick off if possible.

You will see Table Mountain wherever you go and should definitely try and get up there to view the Mother City from the best view possible. There are cable cars which go to and from Table Mountain and we recommend downloading the app to double check the cable cars are running as they don't if there is poor visibility or difficult weather conditions. If you'd prefer to hike, there are a variety of routes to take, differing in length and ability.

A hugely important trip from Cape Town is to Robben Island, where a ticket includes the ferry over to the island where former president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, along with countless other citizens who were held as political prisoners for their fight against the apartheid. The tour guides on Robben Island are former inmates, making the visit profoundly impactful as they present the squalid conditions where they were forced to sleep, eat and work, often with very limited outside visitation while being held under strict rules and regulations, including being forbidden from speaking to to other inmates. As well as seeing Mandela's cell, you are also shown the areas where he wrote (and hid around the prison) manuscripts for his memoir, Long Walk To Freedom.

Another day trip about an hour's drive away from the CBD (central business district) centre is the Cape of Good Hope, the most south-western point of the African continent. It's also where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean so be prepared for breathtaking scenery of lush green mountains and crashing waves on the pebbled beaches.

Have a pit stop at Kalk Bay en route to the Cape of Good Hope, for kitsch coffee shops and souvenir spots, as well as sampling the fish and chips on the waterfront before taking a stroll to where seals will be found happily sunbathing.

Another must-visit is Boulders Beach , home to the famous colony of African penguins. Adorable.

Vineyards near Cape Town

There's the option to spend day trips visiting some of the many vineyards in the nearby wine region (some are as close as 30 minutes away) or you can extend your stay with a night or two there. In which case, you will likely end up in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch.

We opted to spend a night at the majestic Lanzerac Estate, a five-star country hotel with traditional décor full of beautiful quirky china antiques. Surrounded by mountains with a grand tree-lined driveway, the estate is home to rows of lush vines. We recommend heading to the deli for a wine tasting session. Try a glass of the rosé pinotage, a cross between the Pinot Noir and Hermitage grape, which originated at Stellenbosch University.

For a gorgeous dining experience in Stellenbosch where, of course, the wine is just as good too (there are 130 bottles on offer), we recommend the appropriately named The Wine Glass restaurant.

Safari near Cape Town

Of course, safari is a must when heading to South Africa. While the more widely known Kruger National Park is located further north nearer Johannesburg and Pretoria, it's incorrect to assume there aren't beautiful safari options nearer Cape Town, too.

Gondwana game reserve is a four and a half hour drive away from Cape Town. It's an easy drive, essentially one straight long road once out of Cape Town (stop off at Tredici bakery in Swellendam en route).

Gondwana is home to the big five: lion, elephant, rhino, hippo and buffalo, as well as herds of zebra, impala, cheetah, giraffe, monkeys and more. Guests are usually taken out for a morning and late afternoon safari. Thanks to the incredibly knowledgeable and passionate safari guides, highlights range from seeing a baby rhino crossing the path with his mother, a herd of giraffes having their morning breakfast and a post-hunt pride of lions chomping on their prey.

Though it is centrally about the wildlife and ensuing unforgettable experiences you make, the experience of Gondwana is heightened by the luxury accommodation. There are a range of options for your stay, from Ulubisi House, the staffed three-bedroom private lodge with a private pool, to the Kwena Lodge suites with a shared pool, sky lights for stargazing, and a range of indoor and outdoor restaurants offering incredible food.
