Asheville is a city surrounded by mountains, making it a fabulous weekend trip to enjoy nature from a comfortable city base. Asheville is sandwiched between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You have beautiful views and almost immediate access to gorgeous hiking trails and scenic drives like the Blue Ridge Parkway. As if that wasn’t already enough, the city is also an easy weekend getaway, with plenty of regular flight connections. What’s not to love?
Aside from its mountains, you can walk amongst street art in the River Arts District and visit niche attractions like the Asheville Pinball Museum. Asheville has a thriving arts scene and beautiful 19th-century architecture. With the mountains so close by, you really can’t ask for a more interesting weekend break.
- Where to Stay: Elevation Lofts Hotel.
- Insider Tip : Don’t miss the Downtown Art District’s wealth of art galleries.
21. Dallas, Texas
Dallas is a prime destination for first-time visitors to Texas. Get ready for an absolute baptism of fire into Texan culture; Dallas is an exciting weekend getaway. When it comes to weekend trips, you want somewhere with enough personality that you’ll get a great taste of its character even in a short time. This is precisely what Dallas brings to the table. You’ve got cowboy shops dotted all over the city and the Fort Worth Rodeo just north of the city.
When you aren’t embracing Dallas’ infectious cowboy culture, you can be checking out dozens of things to do in the city center. There’s the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, from which JFK was assassinated, and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. It is a real commercial and cultural hub, and you’ll get a great taste of Texas from a weekend in Dallas. And the extra stories from events like the JFK assassination give the city a bit more intrigue.
- Where to Stay: Mint House Dallas.
- Insider Tip: Make sure to visit the Grassy Knoll, which is a grass section marking the spot where John F Kennedy was shot in 1963.
22. Salt Lake City, Utah
Salt Lake City is easily one of the best weekend getaways in the USA. This Utah metropolis sits between the Great Salt Lake and a gorgeous mountain range covered in ski resorts. The result of this is that Salt Lake City makes for great weekend getaways all year round. You could head there in winter to early spring and enjoy a mixture of city breaks and ski holidays. Or you could visit Salt Lake City in summer and enjoy Great Lake’s beaches between sightseeing.
Salt Lake City is a well-located choice for a weekend trip. In the city center, Mormon history is at Temple Square, the Pioneer Memorial Museum is nearby, and there are plenty of beautiful parks—including Sugar House Park, which offers a view of snow-covered mountains.
For us, the fact that you could ski or sunbathe in the morning and then sightsee in the afternoon is a real winner. Salt Lake City is also extremely well-connected with both international and domestic flights.
- Where to Stay: Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City.
- Insider Tip: Provo is just 45 minutes south of Salt Lake City and has a rich Mormon history.
23. Gulf Shores, Alabama
If you love beautiful beaches, the Gulf Shores are one of the top weekend getaways in the USA. The city sits on Alabama’s south coastline and links with the Gulf State Park, which covers over 6,000 acres of sand dunes and protected coastal reserves. It has all the facilities of a city – including easy airport access. However, it also offers a quieter beach getaway experience.
In the Southern USA, many associate its coastal culture with East Coast destinations like Miami or the tropical Florida Keys. For this reason, the Gulf Shores are much less visited. This is great for you as if you visit in a tactical season, you’ll have peaceful beaches with fewer crowds than manic South Beach.
You can visit the Gulf Shores Museum or Gulf State Park Nature Center. But most importantly, you can use weekend getaways in Gulf Shores as a time to relax and rejuvenate.
- Where to Stay: I sland Winds East.
- Insider Tip: Make sure to visit Branyon Beach.

The ‘Big Easy’ is the place for around-the-clock entertainment and a city with serious swagger. You’ve got the creole cuisine of blended French, African, and American dishes, and there’s a raging live music scene that culminates on neon Bourbon Street. New Orleans is full of culture and diversity, with noise and action at every turn. New Orleans will maximize that time if you only have a weekend to enjoy.
You should definitely check out the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum, the Museum of Death, and the architecture of the gorgeous French Quarter. As soon as night falls, though, you should check out Bourbon Street and all its action. You’ll find jazz performances at Preservation Hall, live bands at Ticklers Bar, and karaoke at The World Famous Cats Meow.

Last but not least, we have the incredible Nashville . While traveling in a country as big as the USA can be daunting, you have to start somewhere. Why not a weekend getaway?
Among the country’s extraordinary array of climates, regions and cultures, it’s not hard to find tempting options for a big-city exploration, small-town adventure and epic road trip. The hardest part? Deciding where to go. Which is why we’ve asked four expert writers based in different parts of the USA to share their favorite weekend getaways.
Wherever you are or want to go, there’s an ideal trip for you.
Best weekend getaways in the South
Writer DeAnna Taylor has visited all seven continents. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina , she has also spent plenty of time exploring her local stomping grounds.
Hocking Hills, Ohio
Best for families
Perched on the edge of Appalachia, Hocking Hills features waterfalls, caves, forests and hemlock-covered gorges that are great for family excursions. Small-town hospitality makes everything accessible, including cozy inns and old-school diners. Try tube-floating on the Hocking River, zip-lining through the forest or gazing at the night sky at the John Glenn Astronomy Park .
Savannah, Georgia
Best for couples
Cozy up with your significant other for a romantic carriage ride under Savannah ’s famous oaks draped with Spanish moss. Make a pit stop at scenic Forsyth Park to snap a few photos by the famous fountain. Or stroll hand-in-hand as you peruse the vendors and artisans in Savannah City Market . Consider dropping into The Grey for dinner – the restaurant of famed chef Mashama Bailey and John Morisano – and don’t forget to order the oxtail pot roast and Dutch Fork pumpkin soup.
Southend, Charlotte, North Carolina
Best for foodies
Southend is easily one of Charlotte ’s most bustling neighborhoods, with dozens of locally owned eateries and breweries competing for hungry visitors. For Asian fare, order a feast of crispy pork belly, bao buns, soy-pickled deviled eggs, and sweet and mild wings at Seoul Food Meat Company . If you prefer Mexican-inspired flavors, visit Tacos Rick-O on the patio of Hoppin’ CLT for some of the area’s best birria preparations. At Resident Culture Brewing , El Toro Bruto serves up killer breakfast tacos and pan dulce (sweet pastries). Just don’t forget to grab a chocolate chai or gingerbread matcha from the coffee counter.
Asheville, North Carolina
Best for art and culture lovers
Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway , charming and eclectic Asheville is a great getaway for those who truly appreciate the beauty of street art. Spend some time in the River Arts District to get your fill of ever-changing murals, art galleries and even interactive glassblowing at the North Carolina Glass Center . While there, swing by White Duck Taco for a unique menu that includes tacos made with Thai peanut chicken, jerk chicken and lamb gyro.
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Best for outdoorsy families
Whether you’re traveling as a family or solo, this mountainous Tennessee town is the perfect nature escape. Take the SkyLift for a 2.1-mile ride offering aerial views of Great Smoky Mountains National Park . Or simply spend a day hiking the surrounding trails, leaving time for a serene picnic surrounded by nature (you may even spot wild elk). In the winter, grab your skis or snowboard for a day of thrills at Ober Mountain .
Austin, Texas
Best for nightlife
For fun into the wee hours, Downtown Austin is where you’ll want to go – Rainey St in particular. After famed 6th St, this bustling district is the city’s second-largest entertainment hub, with plenty of bars, live-music venues and eateries. If you’re longing for a Caribbean getaway without having to leave the country, Idle Hands serves up a range of tropics-inspired cocktails.
Best weekend getaways on the West Coast
Originally from Colorado, Tyler Wildeck is a writer based in Portland, Oregon, who has spent most of his adult life roaming the Western USA .
San Juan Islands, Washington
Best for rustic vibes and romance
For adventurous weekenders, the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State showcase some of the Pacific Northwest ’s rarest wildlife. Orcas, the San Juans’ most notable island, is home to three resident pods of killer whales, who are commonly spotted just offshore as they hunt for salmon. The islands also boast the largest concentration of bald eagles in the contiguous United States.
In addition to copious wildlife viewing, hiking and kayaking, the most-populous islands offer a variety of engaging historic sites, restaurants and rustic lodges for a weekend’s stay. Just don’t forget to book your ferry boat (or floatplane) ahead of time.
San Francisco, California
Best for urbanites at heart
San Francisco is synonymous with West Coast culture for a reason. Where else can you find stunning ocean views, top-tier eats and a wealth of shopping, arts and nightlife? The city truly has it all – and while a weekend isn’t enough to see the whole city, it’s enough to make you want to come back many times over. Whether you’re romping around the Mission in search of the perfect cocktail, taking in a Giants game at Oracle Park (two words: garlic fries) or going on a spending spree at the shops around Union Square , there is hardly a better place to spend a weekend away than the City by the Bay.
Astoria, Oregon
Best for history buffs
Situated at the mouth of the Columbia River on Oregon ’s coast, Astoria is just a 90-minute drive from nearby Portland . Great for history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a weekend at the end of the Oregon Trail, Astoria offers the chance to learn about the earliest days of the fur trade in North America and to visit the famous Fort Clatsop , where the Lewis and Clark expedition spent the winter of 1805. (The current fort has been reconstructed to match the original design, and is part of the larger Lewis & Clark National Historical Park .) Spend your weekend getting lost in the stories of river fording and salmon fishing – and, if you’re brave enough, cast a line for your own gigantic sturgeon, one of the coastal site’s most famous undersea creatures.
Joshua Tree National Park, California
Best for a family camping trip
For casual outdoorsy types looking for a easy weekend getaway, Joshua Tree National Park offers a wonderful blend of scenery and outdoor activities, with a notably thinner crowd than popular Yosemite to the north. Just two hours from the Los Angeles area, Joshua Tree offers convenience and a unique desert ecosystem that make it a premium location for a weekend camping trip, and its hiking, world-class rock climbing and stargazing rival anywhere in the US. Bonus points for staying up late enough to snag a picture of the otherworldly Joshua trees underneath a canopy of stars.
Best weekend getaways in the Northeast
Marcia DeSanctis is a writer based in rural Connecticut, whose travels have taken her to Uzbekistan, Rwanda, Egypt – and all over the northeastern United States.
Ogunquit, Maine
Best for New England seaside atmosphere
Sometimes it’s the classics that awaken a sense of discovery, and Ogunquit is quintessential Maine . To visit is to experience the wonderfully familiar – like sensory comfort food – since the air here is tinged with the smells of ocean spray and seafood shacks. Drift through Perkins Cove, the weathered downtown fishing village, and stop for salt-water taffy at Perkins Cove Candies . Try a perfect lobster roll at Barnacle Billy’s between May and November, and all year long at Nubb’s Lobster Shack .
Ogunquit has a dreamy, white-sand public beach , and beyond it lies the Marginal Way, a dramatic, wind-whipped coastal trail along which you can contemplate the Atlantic Ocean to the sounds of waves smashing the granite cliffs.
Providence, Rhode Island
Best for a foodie and cocktail break
Like a lot of American cities that were once down on their luck, the Rhode Island capital has come roaring back. Once the overlooked little brother of mighty Boston , Providence now draws plenty of visitors thanks to its fabulous architectural treasures, plus such intimate, historic neighborhoods as Federal Hill, the city’s vibrant Little Italy. Here, amid the old brick and wooden buildings, you’ll find one of the neighborhood’s (and the city’s) most distinctive dishes: French fries with meatballs at Angelo’s , an institution since 1924.
Urban revivals often center around a food and bar scene – and in this arena, Providence seems to be constantly, brilliantly innovating. For modern takes on classic bars downtown, Eddy is a modern speakeasy, while Clementine , owned by the city’s former mayor, offers small plates and innovative drinks. In the Fox Point neighborhood, Glou has a minimal, almost Scandinavian vibe. Try the crudo – raw, sustainably caught fish – at Oberlin ; its chef and owner Benjamin Sukle is one of the most celebrated chefs in America. And don’t miss the ice-cream sandwiches at Tricycle .
Washington, Connecticut
Best for art – and R&R
Located in northwest Connecticut , the town of Washington is an ideal base for a spin around the scenic Litchfield Hills. Full of working farms, broad New England vistas and a pervading sense of tranquility, the town has lured artists, writers and all manner of creators (think Alexander Calder, Frank McCourt and Christine Baranski) looking to escape the din of New York City , just two hours away.
It is fitting, then, that you can visit world-class art galleries right in town: photography at KMR Arts and painting, sculpture and ceramics (and an unmatched April-to-October farmers market) at the Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens . Browse the shelves at cozy independent bookstore Hickory Stick (and find signed copies from authors who call the area home, including Dani Shapiro, Lisa Taddeo, Courtney Maum and Sarah Albee); bring proper shoes for any of the 18 miles of lush trails at Steep Rock Preserve ; and put on something a little fancier – but not too fancy! – for craft cocktails and a sublime, locally sourced dinner at Community Table .
Hudson, New York
Best for shopping and charm
Just two hours north of Manhattan, Hudson draws both tastemakers and weekend wanderers. The whaling industry – thanks to which Hudson became a 19th-century boomtown– eventually faltered, yet the city retains the era’s elegant Queen Anne and Victorian bones, and much of it has been lovingly and stylishly restored. The main thoroughfare, Warren St, is lined with handsome mini-mansions, coffee bars, Scandinavian antique stores and low-key-chic clothing boutiques like Unracked . On the to-do list: brunch at Tavern in the movie theater-turned-hotel Rivertown Lodge ; real French crêpes at Le Gamin ; a visit to Olana , painter Frederic Church’s stunning residence above the Hudson River, which also has several miles of trails; and made-in-the-USA basics at Hudson Clothier .
Kancamagus Hwy, New Hampshire
Best for a scenic drive and the great outdoors
To born-and-bred Yankees, Rte 112, the scenic New Hampshire highway known locally as “ the Kanc ,” is the prettiest drive in the northeast. For raw, sheer, bold beauty, it is textbook New England, blazing red and orange come fall-foliage season. It is also ideal the rest of the year, with less traffic along the 35-mile mountain gap (and its many connected trails) through New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest – home to Mt Washington and Franconia Notch State Park, both nearby.
Begin in the ski town of Conway and head west. The route is jam-packed with natural beauty and plenty of hiking trails, so by all means pull over and veer off to stretch your legs, take in the views and chase the seven waterfalls cascading over granite rock faces along the way. Among the loveliest sights: picturesque Albany Covered Bridge, built in 1858; the cascade, lake and footbridge at Rocky Gorge; roaring Sabbaday Falls; the Pemigewassett Overlook, with its panoramic vistas of the Osceola Mountains; and Franconia Falls, with naturally carved chutes and slides for a cool dip in summer. At the end of your drive, you’ll be in the fanciful town of Lincoln.
Best weekend getaways in the Midwest
Rosalind Cummings-Yeates is a Chicago-born-and-bred writer with deep expertise in all things related to the Windy City (she’s written two books on her hometown) as well as the wider Midwest .
Door County, Wisconsin
Best for outdoor escapades
Five state parks, forests, orchards, sand dunes, sea caves and 300 miles of dazzling shoreline make Door County , Wisconsin , the ultimate natural paradise. This all-season outdoor getaway boasts near-endless recreation options along dozens of scenic trails. The peninsula encompasses a cluster of charming small towns, and travelers can explore the landscapes of each one. After hiking, boating or climbing lighthouses, the signature Door County experience is a fish boil. This centuries-old Scandinavian tradition involves a master boiler who oversees a big cauldron of whitefish – as they toss kerosene on an open fire.
Kansas City, Missouri
Best for a (mid-sized) city break
Over 200 fountains cascade water all over Kansas City , giving this Midwest powerhouse the designation of the city with the most working fountains in the world. KC is filled with surprises like this, making it the perfect mid-sized-city getaway. Munching through mounds of sweet and spicy barbecue and checking out the city’s notable jazz heritage at clubs and at the American Jazz Museum are definite musts. But there are also unexpected gems like the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the 22-acre sculpture park at the world-class Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art – not to mention delightful independent shops .
Chicago, Illinois
Best for culture lovers
Chi-town supplies everything from food and art to music and architecture in big, memorable doses. The Midwest’s largest city, Chicago pulses with history and excitement, whether you opt for a famous excursion like an architecture tour along the lakefront, or a visit to one of its 77 diverse neighborhoods. Come hungry, too – to sample signature dishes like deep-dish pizza, Italian beef and jibarito sandwiches, and then to hit up one of 23 Michelin-starred restaurants. World-class museums including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum of Natural History explore human achievement, while glorious live music at dozens of blues, jazz and indie clubs is always on offer. The cultural riches shine all year round but the summer brings extra sparkle thanks to dynamic music and art festivals.
Galena, Illinois
Best for historic charm
Cozy up with your partner amid the 19th-century elegance of this former mining town framed by the Galena River, with Victorian houses lining the streets and rolling hills as a backdrop. Stroll through a vineyard and wine-tasting tour, hop on an electric bike or opt for a romantic balloon ride. A stop by the Italianate home of 18th US President Ulysses S Grant is a Galena must-do.

18 best weekend getaways in the US
Editor's Note
As an outdoors-oriented, music-loving road-tripper with itchy feet, I've taken many a weekend trip over the past few years.
Some of my favorites include days cooing over otters and elephant seals in Morro Bay on California's Central Coast, exploring Yellowstone National Park on horseback in Wyoming and dancing the night away in Nashville.
Whether your preferred escape involves putting your feet up poolside or setting them on a mountain trail, there's a getaway guaranteed to restore your sanity and recharge your batteries in the U.S.
Here are 18 camera-worthy weekend trips, ideal for chilling, adventuring or both across the country.
Best getaways in the West
Cody, wyoming.
Immerse yourself in authentic cowboy culture at the epicenter of America's Wild West. Spend the morning at the Smithsonian-affiliated Buffalo Bill Center of the West and use the afternoon to explore the authentic pioneer-era buildings of Old Trail Town. Finish the day off with the Cody Nite Rodeo.
Just outside of town, the historic Buffalo Bill Dam rises 280 feet above the Shoshone River canyon and features an educational visitors center. A different kind of history awaits in the heartbreaking stories of those at the Heart Mountain Internment Camp, where Japanese citizens — including women and children — were imprisoned for the duration of WWII.
Cody also offers prime access to Yellowstone National Park , with the park's less-crowded eastern entrance just 52 miles from town via the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway. For the full experience, stay at one of Cody's numerous dude ranches or take a trail ride at the Bill Cody Ranch.

Morro Bay, California
The quest for the perfect California beach town can't land you in a better spot than Morro Bay. It's tucked into a sheltered harbor where sea otters provide constant entertainment with their playful antics.
A working fishing fleet still heads out every morning to bring in crab, salmon and cod, while oyster beds line up just offshore, ensuring that the town's many seafood restaurants are well stocked with fresh catch year-round. Giovanni's Fish Market and Galley, Tognazzini's Dockside and Blue Sky Bistro are all top choices for enjoying chowder, grilled and raw oysters, and the catch of the day. Look for the festive covered deck behind Tognazzini's, where the Dockside Too Fish Market serves a more informal menu in a friendly atmosphere with live music. Speaking of music, check the schedule of the venerable club The Siren, which hosts surprisingly big-name bands en route between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
This unassuming bayside hamlet is also supremely dog-friendly; there is an off-leash town beach, and pups are welcome in many cafes and restaurants. After exploring the town's signature landmark, towering Morro Rock, stroll the long crescent-shaped stretch of sand that extends north and connects with Morro Strand State Beach.
Just up Highway 1, the Piedras Blancas reserve is home to a growing rookery of elephant seals. A boardwalk provides an up-close viewing of the ungainly creatures as they mate, fight, give birth and nurse their young.

Bisbee, Arizona
Clinging to the steep slopes of the Mule Mountains at seemingly impossible angles, the mining cabins, narrow alleys and 19th-century storefronts (and former brothels) of Bisbee make a memorable maze to explore.
Take a tour of the Queen Mine to learn about Bisbee's history as a fount of gold and silver ore. Also, check out the numerous galleries and boutiques that have turned the town into a popular haunt for artists and makers.
There's no hike quite like the annual Bisbee 1000 The Great Stair Climb , which scales a 4 1/2-mile maze of stairs and alleys. You can actually pick up a map from the Bisbee Visitor Center for a self-guided hike anytime. Or, you can join the thousands who crowd Bisbee's narrow streets every year in mid-October for the riotous event.

Southern Oregon
If Ashland's world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival doesn't lure you to southern Oregon , the Britt Music & Art Festival in nearby Jacksonville might just be the ticket. You'll also want to meander through the Applegate and Rogue River valleys, visiting farm stands and tasting pinots and chardonnays.
Don't overlook unassuming Central Point, a foodie haven where the Rogue Creamery serves up cheeses so good they've won top international awards. Make time to sample artisanal chocolates from Lillie Belle Farms and morning buns from Coquette Bakery next door.
In the former logging town of Grants Pass, Victorian storefronts in the once-neglected historic downtown now house an up-and-coming arts district of cafes, brewpubs and bohemian boutiques. The Rogue River runs right through town; stop by Riverside Park to relax by its tumbling waters or take a speedboat ride with Hellgate Jetboat Excursions to see the river's famous rapids and canyons.
The Lost Sierra, California
This little-known swath of the northern Sierra, bypassed by the hordes swarming Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, is an outdoor recreational paradise. It's particularly beloved by the hikers hitting the trails of the Lakes Basin and mountain bikers challenging themselves on rugged terrain (made famous by the Downieville Classic championship bike race and festival).
Base yourself in the authentic gold rush town of Downieville, where the Yuba and Downie rivers meet just steps from the tiny town's wooden sidewalks. The sidewalks are dotted with Western saloons and a cluster of well-restored hotels. With two rivers to choose from, there's no shortage of swimming spots for a cold plunge. You can also drive the scenic Gold Lake Highway to visit a string of sparkling alpine lakes. If Downieville's legendary mountain biking is your draw, head to Yuba Outfitters for bike rentals and to sign up for the numerous daily shuttles to the trailhead.
Start your day with a high-energy breakfast at Sabrina's at the Forks, or fuel up with coffee or a smoothie at Cold Rush Cafe. Finish the day with a drink at the historic St. Charles or the festive Boomtown Lounge; the latter boasts a lively beer garden, Boomtown Backyard, with weekly trivia and live music.
Downieville also offers a surprising number of dinner options for its size. Try La Cocina De Oro for a veggie-forward take on Mexican food, Two Rivers Cafe for creative pizza and salads, Jaada's Kitchen for hearty American-style fare, and Boomtown Backyard for weekend specials. Empire Provisions is your go-to for picnic and hiking supplies.
There's big news for the future as well: A 600-mile-long trail network of multi-use trails, the Lost Sierra Route , is under development to link the 15 small towns encircling the wilderness (but it will likely be 2030 before many of the trails are completed).
Mendocino County, California
Plunging cliffs, pounding surf, sheltered coves and one of California's most exciting — and undiscovered — wine countries await in this colorful region just north of San Francisco.
The picture-perfect village of artsy Mendocino may be deservingly well-known. However, you'll have discoverer's bragging rights to hidden coves, recently opened hiking trails and up-and-coming wineries of the Anderson Valley .
Go tide pooling at Van Damme State Park, hike the bluffs of Jug Handle State Natural Reserve and drive north to the authentic seaport of Noyo Harbor. There, fresh crab and salmon are offloaded straight onto the docks and then to the plates of a clutch of seafood restaurants right on the water. While Mendocino's galleries, boutiques and cafes are undeniably tempting, leave time to walk the trail that traces the clifftops of the Mendocino Headlands — particularly stunning at sunset.
Lodging choices match the eclectic environment. Options include treehouses and off-the-grid cabins in addition to elegant inns and luxurious boutique hotels.
Come to visit the two national parks, Arches and Canyonlands, that bracket this town. Stay for the mountain biking, hiking, and hot food and music scenes that have made Moab a buzzy high-desert hub. Or, to get away from the crowds, head for one of the lesser-known red rock parks surrounding town to see chiseled spires, sky-framing arches, gnarly hoodoos and other formations.
Mountain bikers come to ride the ever-expanding maze of trails known as the Moab Brands. They may also venture out into the BLM lands surrounding town to test their mettle on uber-challenging trails like Slickrock (so famous it has its own gigantic parking lot). The Colorado River appeals to kayakers and boaters who put in at the Big Bend Recreation Area, road-trippers who drive the scenic Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway and campers who pitch their tents in the numerous campgrounds along the river.

Gunnison, Colorado, and the San Juan Mountains
Gunnison is the gateway to some of the most spectacular landscapes and recreational opportunities in the southern Rockies. There's the vivid slash of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which lies 60 miles to the east. There's Curecanti National Recreation Area stretching for 42,000 acres just outside town. And, there are the ski slopes and mountain biking trails of Crested Butte and Breckenridge rising to the north.
Clinging to the peaks of the soaring San Juan range, the historic mining towns of Ouray and Telluride have transformed into chic outdoorsy getaways complete with hot springs and high-end eateries. Jeep and ATV tours are a huge draw here, with white-knuckle routes traversing the ridiculously rugged mining roads that once linked the high-altitude hamlets.
Beyond its status as an outdoor recreation hub, Gunnison is gaining prominence for its rising food scene. Creative young chefs are transforming the town's colorful 19th-century saloons and steakhouses into trendy cocktail bars, fusion-themed restaurants and farm-to-fork cafes.

Finger lakes, new york.
One glance at a map and you'll understand the apt description of these 11 narrow, glacier-scraped lakes. Together, they form a region so rich in recreation offerings that many visitors return year after year and rarely repeat an experience.
History buffs won't want to miss the Harriet Tubman Home National Historic Park , which narrates the astonishing life of the abolitionist leader and foremost guide on the Underground Railroad. The Women's Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls tells the story of women's fight for equality through the eyes of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and other local women who founded and led the movement.
Each lake has at least one picturesque shore town at its northern end; Skaneateles, Geneva and Canandaigua are among the liveliest. Stroll among galleries, cafes, cleverly themed shops and a host of notable restaurants. Or, kick back on the dock of a shoreside hotel or lake house and enjoy the light playing on the water.
Experience the living cultures of the Seneca people at the Ganondagan Seneca Arts & Cultural Center . Deeply involving exhibits document their culture and history, along with the lamentable story of their treatment by the arriving settlers. The grounds feature a re-created authentic bark longhouse and a network of hiking trails; local Seneca artisans and storytellers are often on-site to interpret their culture. To learn more about the lives of the new arrivals, visit the sprawling Genesee Country Village & Museum to see tinsmiths, potters, bakers, and blacksmiths in action and to experience the nitty-gritty of 18th-century survival.
The Finger Lakes region is also renowned for its wines. There are four different wine trails around Cayuga, Canandaigua, Keuka and Seneca lakes and some spread throughout the countryside. Waterfalls are another of the area's claims to fame. No visit is complete without walking the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail or gazing in awe at 217-foot Taughhannock Falls.
Rhinebeck, New York
History lovers can tour the historic Wilderstein mansion. Hikers can ascend the Ferncliff Forest Fire Tower. Food lovers will want to hit the farmers market or go apple and berry picking in the orchards surrounding this 300-year-old Hudson Valley village.
Don't miss the chance to get a sugar high at Samuel's Sweet Shop — a local institution owned by actors Paul Rudd, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Hilarie Burton. Also, enjoy a pint at the pre-Revolutionary War Beekman Arms tavern, which once served Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Ready for dinner? The Culinary Institute of America is a short drive from Rhinebeck, and the campus is dotted with top-notch, student-run restaurants.
MidCoast Maine
Stay in Boothbay Harbor and attend one of Maine 's numerous nautical events, including Windjammer Days and the Tall Ships Festival. Drive Route 1, stopping at the string of tiny hamlets along the way and eating lobster at every chance. Don't miss Boothbay Harbor's greatest draw: the expansive Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens . Also, plan a stop at the outstanding Maine Maritime Museum before heading to nearby historic Wiscasset (home to the famous lobster shack Red's Eats ).
The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is extraordinarily photogenic on its perch at the end of a causeway, but Maine has 64 more lighthouses to satisfy your camera after that.

Best getaways in the Midwest
The Windy City, the City with the Big Shoulders and the Last Great American City — Chicago's universally recognized monikers speak to the city's grit, spirit of invention, cultural elan and magnificent skyline.
Take it all in from the Skydeck on the 103rd floor of the iconic Willis Tower; it rises above what is, unquestionably, one of North America's finest collections of modern architecture. All the big-name architects are here: the skyscraper prototypes of Louis Sullivan, the modernist minimalism of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright and the billowing steel of Frank Gehry's show-stopping Jay Pritzker Pavilion.
The city's world-class museums — like the Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum — always take top billing. However, you should also make time to explore the city's neighborhoods. Stroll around the leafy German enclave of Lincoln Square, graze on Scandinavian-inspired baked goods in eclectic Andersonville, or explore galleries and parks in the Mexican-American neighborhood of Pilsen. And, of course, be sure to sample some of Chicago's iconic dishes — Al's Italian beef sandwiches, deep-dish pizza, Chicago-style hot dogs — and the city's boundary-pushing restaurant scene.

Mackinac Island
A pure slice of 19th-century Victoriana, Mackinac Island charms with its timeless streetscapes, idyllic shoreline and lushly forested interior. Sitting on Lake Huron between northern Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas, it's well known for its hiking trails, historic forts and pedestrianized streets. Cars are not allowed on Mackinac Island, so you'll have to park yours at the dock before taking the ferry to your resort. Opt for cycling, walking or horse-drawn carriage rides during your visit.
For the quintessential Mackinac Island experience, stay at the iconic Grand Hotel . The charming resort — also known as "America's Summer Place" — is more than a century old and remains a beloved monument for Midwesterners. Just one of many superlatives, it's home to the world's longest porch, which overlooks the waters of Lake Huron. Another option: Savor history and luxury at the Inn at Stonecliffe . It was built in 1904 as the lakeside estate of a wealthy Chicago family but unveiled a $40-million restoration in June 2024.
Best getaways in the South
A trip to Nashville feels like a journey through country and bluegrass musical history. Visitors can enjoy concerts at the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry or explore museums such as the Country Music Hall of Fame, the National Museum of African American Music and RCA Studio B.
Active travelers can go paddleboarding and kayaking on the Cumberland River and nearby Old Hickory Lake. Or, they can take advantage of the city's expansive bike-share network to ride through town or on the rail trails (known collectively as the Greenway).
And don't sleep on the legendary food scene where award-winning chefs garner accolades for Nashville's restaurants almost as often as musicians earn Grammys.

Fredericksburg, Texas
Bluebonnets may have put Fredericksburg and the surrounding countryside on the getaway map, but lavender, peaches and, increasingly, wine are the bounty that make this Texas Hill Country village an uber-popular escape.
German immigrants settled in the area in the 19th century. You'll notice their influence in the lacy woodwork that bedecks local houses; the flower boxes lining the streets; and the wursts, aged cheeses and schnitzels on many menus.
Also, with vineyards and grapes terracing the surrounding hillsides, you'll want to follow the Texas Hill Country Wineries tasting map or visit some of the many tasting rooms in town.
The visitor appeal verges on the hokey — the streets are named so that their first letters spell out A-L-L-W-E-L-C-O-M-E upon entering town and C-O-M-E-B-A-C-K upon leaving. However, the welcome is real in the Texas-size hospitality.
New River Gorge, West Virginia
America's newest national park, New River Gorge National Park & Preserve , is the biggest draw to this verdant swath of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountains. It has long lured adventurers to scale its sheer sandstone cliffs, cross the 876-foot-tall New River Gorge Bridge, and raft the Class IV and Class V rapids of the New and Gauley rivers.
A hive of outdoor activities, Adventures on the Gorge feels like a summer camp for all ages. There is a wide variety of cabins, lodges and other accommodations as well as a full roster of attractions. Some options include three different aerial adventures (read: zip lines), so there's plenty for all daredevil levels.
Long on vintage country charm and Southern comfort food, the gateway towns of Fayetteville and Hinton have become popular destinations for mountain biking and hiking as well.

Those are only a few of the highlights of Kauai 's North Shore. You'll also dine on fresh-caught ahi, swordfish and mahi-mahi, thanks to Kauai's thriving local fishing industry.
Beaches are the biggest draw here, of course. Favorites include Hanalei Bay Beach Park, Waioli Beach, Tunnels Beach, and Ke'e Beach at the end of the road. Looking for the perfect place to stay? The newly reimagined 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a TPG favorite.

The best weekend trips in the U.S. for 2024
The best weekend trips in the U.S. help you see the country one unexpected destination at a time
We love a European vacation as much as the next person, but perhaps less so these days. Despite the many flash sales luring us abroad, there’s just too much to see and do right here in America. The rise in low-cost airlines expanding their routes throughout the U.S. has also refocused our wanderlust, nudging us toward short escapes closer to home. And with limited time and budgets, a weekend getaway in the U.S. is just the vacation we all need right now.
Our picks bypass the obvious choices, say New York or L.A., in favor of smaller cities with booming art scenes, lesser-known towns with incredible restaurants and coastal spots with plenty of room to spread out on the sand. You’ll find fewer crowds and plenty of small-town charm at these unexpected destinations. Looking for someplace to go in 2024? These places should absolutely be on your travel radar this year.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
Best weekend trips in the U.S.
1. cape may, new jersey.
Fun travel fact: “America’s Oldest Seashore Resort” can be found on the southern tip of the Garden State. Yes, Cape May is technically on the Jersey Shore but it’s the antithesis of the Jersey Shore you see on MTV—in lieu of Snookie sightings, nightclubs and tanning parlors, you’ll find Victorian mansions, horse-drawn carriages, gas-lit cobblestone streets, blooming hydrangeas and a famous lighthouse.
So why should you visit Cape May? Most people will tell you the long stretches of beaches and colorful architecture alone are reason enough to come. But locals will opine it’s about the passionate community, walkability to everywhere, the parks peppered with grandiose trees, bangin’ local music scene, mom-and-pop shops, the Coast Guard base, well-manicured lawns, family-owned restaurants, impeccable homes and its charm. Cape May is also a gourmand’s dream where perfectly seasoned, fresh-caught seafood dots the menus of all the town’s best haunts.
Where to stay: If modern and minimalist are your vibe, look no further than La Mer Beachfront Resort . The family-owned property recently underwent a major renovation and the hotel offers the island’s most swanky accommodations, swathed in beige and white hues and replete with traditional-yet-contemporary furnishings.
Don’t miss it: The Lobster House is Cape May’s most popular restaurant and the dining experience here beside the Fisherman’s Wharf is a must. Order a cold beer with steamed Maryland crabs and fried clams dockside and soak in the sights of the wharf.
Nearest airport: Atlantic City International Airport (ACY)
2. Burlington, Vermont
Burlington’s charm as a waterfront university town is well known, but with two Vermont chefs and eateries in the running for the 2024 James Beard Awards, it’s a necessary getaway for food and drink lovers. From pastry chef Amanda Wildermuth’s tahini sundae (think sesame caramel and crumbled halva) at the Eastern Mediterranean-influenced Honey Road , to spicy brussels sprouts with a cult following (hello, citrus-garlic chili sauce, golden raisins and sunflower seeds) thanks to chef Mojo Hancy-Davis’s farm-to-table menu at May Day —plus a rotating selection of craft beers from the small experimental brewery Foam Brewers —Burlington’s restaurant and bar scene is bustling.
Where to stay: Rustic ski lodge meets bougie boutique property at Hotel Vermont , where wood-burning fireplaces, stone walls and views of Lake Champlain are the perfect backdrops for sampling the hotel’s long list of craft beers and cocktails.
Don’t miss it: The killer onion soup and maple creme brulée at Leunig’s , Church Street’s iconic bistro.
Nearest airport: Burlington Airport (BTV)
3. Bentonville, Arkansas
More than 100 miles away from a major city (if you can call Tulsa, Oklahoma that), you'll find charming Bentonville, Arkansas at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The birthplace of Walmart (by way of Sam Walton’s first Five and Dime, opened in 1950) has flourished beyond its retail reputation, becoming a destination for art enthusiasts, cyclists, and curious travelers interested in an equally charming and albeit less crowded, alternative to nearby Southern capitals.
Your weekend in Bentonville, which celebrates its 150th anniversary , starts with the familiar—a visit to downtown’s Walmart Museum , because why not?—before venturing to the popular: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is a sprawling cultural institution whose permanent collection of works spans five centuries and is always free to visit. Plus, its onsite chef offers a host of unique dining experiences.
Then, it’s time to head to the woods. With a trail system that wraps around the museum’s 120-acre park and a host of paved paths throughout the city, Bentonville’s natural landscape is ripe for exploring on foot or two wheels. Airship Coffee at the Coler Mountain Bike Preserve is a delightful open-air cafe where you can power up or cool down between runs.
Where to stay: 21c Museum Hotel is equal parts boutique hotel and hip gallery with a dedicated exhibition space. Contemporary artworks and sculptures are sprinkled throughout the property.
Don’t miss it: The Bentonville Film Festival , chaired by Academy Award Winner Geena Davis, celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer. The annual event screens shorts, docs, features, animated movies and more films, focusing on diversity and inclusion.
Nearest airport: Fayetteville, Arkansas (XNA)
4. Rockland, Maine
This small but vibrant coastal town is quintessentially Maine. Rockland packs a punch with stunning views from its rocky coastline plus cultural offerings and top-notch dining. Art enthusiasts can visit The Farnsworth Art Museum or the Center for Maine Contemporary Art while those in search of local bounty can hit up the weekly farmers' market and gems like Rock City Coffee . There’s waterfront dining aplenty, but few might think to venture inland to the nationally-lauded Primo . Have a night out at the historic Myrtle Street Tavern, Liberator Brewing Company or The Strand Theater . As one of the biggest lobster shipping centers in the world, Rockland celebrates the coveted crustacean each August at the hugely popular Maine Lobster Fest . Explore Penobscot Bay on a cruise and you’ve completed a true Maine adventure.
Where to stay: Overlooking the harbor, the luxurious, design-forward 250 Main Hotel is in the perfect location for exploring Rockland.
Don’t miss it: Walk the mile-long granite breakwater path to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse for a panoramic view of the city from the water plus the chance to explore the 100+ year history of the lighthouse.
Nearest airport: Knox County Regional Airport (RKD)
5. Topeka, Kansas
As an under-the-radar capital, Topeka’s got a surprising number of hipster brewpubs, including the Blind Tiger Restaurant & Brewery , the Norsemen Brewing Company , Iron Rail Brewing and the Happy Basset Barrel House —which includes an attached dog park and a flamingo scavenger hunt to keep humans entertained between pints. Downtown is walkable, and neighborhoods are parkable with a selection of locally owned eateries like the Blue Moose Bar & Grill . Check out NOTO , the arts and entertainment district with art studios, antique stores and a monthly First Friday ArtWalk. At Gage Park, ride a mile-long mini-train and visit the new giraffe exhibit opening March 10 at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center . Don your jumpsuit for the Evel Knievel Museum before it moves to Las Vegas, and catch a show at Topeka Civic Theatre , which hosts (they say) the country’s oldest, continuously-running community dinner theater. Topeka was founded in 1854 by antislavery colonists, and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site commemorates the landmark Civil Rights case that ended legal segregation in public schools.
Where to stay: The Cyrus Hotel pairs luxury with Midwest charm in a century-old building with striking city views from upper stories.
Don’t miss it: The capitol with its mural of abolitionist John Brown roaring with his rifle and Bible. Stay downstairs to roll a quarter down the sloping tile tunnel, then ascend to the cupola through a series of terrifying stairs and landings suspended in the middle of the vast dome.
Nearest airport: Kansas City Airport (MCI)
6. Mendocino, California
Located a couple of hours north of the Bay Area, Mendocino feels like a storybook out of a romance novel. The area blends charming New England architecture with a dramatic California coastline. And Mendocino’s remote nature means it never feels like it’s trying too hard or overcrowded. Imagine charming inns with roaring fires, homemade breakfast, and views of waves crashing on the rocky shore. Restaurants that serve fish caught nearby earlier that day. A quaint downtown with Victorian buildings turned into independent shops. Trails that lead you through redwoods and onto the beach.
Where to stay: SCP Mendocino Inn and Farm , a recently refreshed bed and breakfast that features an 1867 country manor, a modern lodge, adorable onsite llamas and homemade breakfast delivered to your room.

Outdoor enthusiasts can bike the Tammany Trace , paddle the Bogue Falaya River or visit a gator ranch . There’s entertainment aplenty too: spring and fall bring outdoor concerts, the Three Rivers Arts Festival is a draw in November and monthly block parties from March through October on Columbia Street celebrate what makes Covington unique.
Where to stay: The historic, family-owned Southern Hotel offers luxurious accommodations, fabulous food and plenty of Southern hospitality.
Don’t miss it: Head to the Abita Brewing Company for locally brewed beers featuring local ingredients. Take a tour and stick around for a bite, and maybe catch a band at one of the brewery’s frequent weekend events.
Nearest airport: New Orleans Airport (MSY)

Culture vultures have long flocked to the town thanks to Tanglewood , the summertime home of the Boston Symphony, and the innovative local theater group Shakespeare & Company . Now, upscale accommodations like 33 Main and the recently renovated Cornell Inn are providing a more luxurious mountain escape. (Those looking for true luxury should pencil some time in at Miraval Berkshires .) History lovers can arrange to tour nearby architectural stunners like Ventfort Hall and The Mount , the one-time home of author Edith Wharton. A day spent taking in the past can also be complemented with some more of-the-moment culinary offerings in downtown Lenox, like the intimate wine bar Brava .

Its walkable downtown area is chock-full of quaint shops like the nostalgia-inducing Mast General Store, diverse dining options (ranging from delectable Mexican street food at Pap’s Tacos to contemporary Italian at Jianna ), and abundant local artwork. We recommend grabbing coffee at Methodical Coffee and heading to Falls Park on the Reedy , which offers excellent views of the surrounding falls. In the afternoon, refuel with an ice-cold beer at Southernside Brewing Co . as you stroll or bike along the 22-mile-long Swamp Rabbit Trail .

14. Narragansett, Rhode Island
The seaside town of Narragansett is just 22 minutes by car from the Gilded Age glamour of Newport, but you’d never know it. Narragansett is beloved for its laid-back and low-key vibes. It’s also a popular spot for surfing, and travelers of all experience levels can sign up for lessons and/or rent gear from local businesses like Narragansett Surf & Skate Shop . Whether or not you choose to actually explore the water—you can, alternatively, simply walk along the beach and soak up the sun on your own—hit up neighborhood faves like Cool Beans Cafe for acai bowls or Fuel Coffee Bar for a cold brew and a fresh pastry.
Where to stay: The 31-room Shore House blends nautical charm and Victorian elegance; plus, we’d be remiss not to highlight the beachy-chic accommodations and Instagram-worthy ocean views.
Don’t miss it: Snag a table at The Coast Guard House Restaurant and savor fresh seafood like freshly shucked oysters, hearty New England clam chowder, and gooey lobster mac.
Nearest airport: Westerly Airport (WST)
15. Saugatuck, Michigan
This welcoming West Michigan town combines local charm with a beautiful lakefront setting to provide visitors with the platonic ideal of a midwestern beach getaway. Long known for its vibrant arts community thanks to the Saugatuck Center for the Arts and the Chicago Art Institute’s Oxbow School of Art and Artists’ Residency, the laid-back destination is now emerging as a culinary hot spot. Virtue Cider , founded by the former brewmaster of Chicago’s Goose Island Brewery, turns out award-winning cider while Pennyroyal Café & Provisions , helmed by former Chopped winner Missy Corey, serves elevated takes on local specialties like fried perch. Meanwhile, James Beard-nominated eatery The Southerner serves dangerously (in a good way) spicy fried chicken sandwiches. The town has also been long known for welcoming LGBTQ+ travelers thanks, in part, to lively party spots like The Dunes Resort .
Where to stay: The Lake Shore Resort , just north of Saugatuck, provides stunning views of Lake Michigan from a dramatic bluff.
Don’t miss it: Tulip Time , a weeklong festival dedicated to all things tulips, kicks off on May 4.
Nearest airport: Muskegon County Airport (MKG)
16. Sarasota, Florida
Nestled between Tampa and Fort Meyers, Sarasota boasts nearly 40 miles of white sand beaches and wildlife along Florida’s balmy Gulf shoreline. But this quaint beach town also touts a quirky history and some serious urban amenities. Circus mogul John Ringling moved his shows here for the winter in 1927. Since then, the city’s become an eclectic cultural hub, home to the renowned Sarasota School of Architecture, numerous respected art programs, museums and performance venues.
Work up an appetite exploring Sarasota’s galleries, botanical gardens and famed keys like Siesta and Longboat, then bounce around its bustling waterfront downtown for dinner and nightlife—but not before indulging in homemade pies from Yoder’s Amish Village . This spring, Circus Sarasota celebrates its 26th anniversary.
Where to stay: The Lido Beach House ’s charming mid-century modern digs are a short, scenic bridge away from downtown.
Don’t miss it: John Ringling's former home, Ca’ d’Zan , is a Venetian Gothic-style stunner with ornate interiors and sweeping views of Sarasota Bay. It also served as the location for Miss Havisham’s dilapidated mansion in the 1996 film Great Expectations.
Nearest airport: Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)
17. Laughlin, Nevada
Located 90 miles south of Las Vegas, Laughlin, Nevada is a smaller, quieter version of Las Vegas with a small-town feel. With less than 10,000 permanent residents, Laughlin boasts eight casinos, dozens of casino resort restaurants like the Western-themed Claim Jumper, and bars with live bands like Losers Lounge along the Colorado River. Surrounded by the Mojave Desert and boasting a beautiful mountain backdrop, Laughlin is a paradise for gamblers and outdoor enthusiasts who can kayak or river cruise along the Colorado River that runs through the heart of town, hike the Colorado River Heritage Trails that runs parallel the water, explore stone mazes at Laughlin Labyrinths , and chill in a poolside cabana at Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort and Harrah’s Laughlin Beach Resort & Casino. Nearby, sunbathers can enjoy Lake Mohave’s 200 miles of shoreline and explore its coves and wildlife, drive Route 66, visit Hoover Dam , and visit Arizona’s oldest distillery, Desert Diamond Distillery .
Where to stay: Most of Laughlin’s 9,000 hotel rooms are less than $50 a night. Aquarius Casino Resort is the largest.;
Don’t miss it: Stroll along Laughlin Riverwalk , a paved walkway along the Colorado River that connects most of the casinos.
Nearest airport: Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport (IFP)

Disappearing into the woods, soaking up salty sea air, or getting lost in wine country all have their charms—and thankfully, all of the above are available just a few hours from Manhattan via rail, bus, or rental car . From the Hamptons to the Adirondacks, beaches, islands, and mountains are all easily accessible from New York City. Some of them may leave you wondering why New York's surrounding destinations don't get more buzz in the first place.
Below, the 17 best weekend getaways from NYC. Here's to checking them all of your bucket list. (For the best restaurants, hotels, and more in the city itself, check out our New York City travel guide .)
This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.
The quintessential beach town: Asbury Park, New Jersey
Just over an hour’s drive
We’ve long held the opinion that the classic Jersey Shore town, Asbury Park, doesn’t get enough attention . Super accessible from the city, it’s just an hour and fifteen minutes by car on the Garden State Parkway, and only thirty minutes longer if you're traveler from Penn Station on a Bay Head-bound North Jersey Coast Line train. From Asbury Park’s bustling boardwalk to its famous mile-long beach, this town offers the perfect blend of relaxation and action. Experience the exciting local food scene by making stops at Reyla (for Mediterranean small plates) or beachside coffee shop Asbury Park Roastery. Consider staying at the Asbury Ocean Club, Surfside Resort and Residences for an elevated beachside experience or the eclectic Asbury Hotel , which has the perfect rooftop.
The suburban sanctuary: Fairfield County, Connecticut
About a one-hour train ride via Metro-North
When you’re pressed on time and need a low-key break from the city, do as commuters do and escape to the ‘burbs. Hop on the Metro-North New Haven Line out of Grand Central and take an hour train to one of Fairfield County's numerous charming towns and cities. From coastal enclaves like Greenwich and Westport to more wooded areas like New Canaan and Wilton, the variety of Connecticut's suburbs may surprise you. Fairfield County doesn’t claim the tri-state’s best beaches, to be sure, but there’s plenty of summer fun to be had along Long Island Sound: take a kayak, sailboat, or ferry between the Norwalk Islands, stroll down one of the area’s many public beaches , or savor local seafood (be sure to order a round of Copps Island oysters) at Knot Norms , Rowayton Seafood , The Whelk , or L’Escale . There’s outdoor attractions beyond the beach, too: New Canaan’s Grace Farms, Stamford’s Cove Island Park, and Darien’s newly-opened Great Island offer acres of walking paths and recreational space. Book a stay at the Inn at Gray Barns or the Delamar Greenwich Harbor hotel, or rent a cozy Airbnb to truly settle in—without settling down.
The rural retreat: Manchester, Vermont
About a four-hour drive (or bus)
When you feel the need to go off-the-grid, the Green Mountain State is always a good idea for a long weekend in nature—whether you’re after winter snow or fall foliage. The idyllic town of Manchester located nearby Stratton Mountain Resort allows for just the right amount of isolation where you can relax in peaceful solitude without sacrificing top-notch restaurants, shopping, and human interaction (should you desire). Pro tip for the driving-averse New Yorkers out there: the Hampton Jitney runs a winter route between NYC and Manchester from December to March, departing on Fridays and returning each Sunday (fares start at $69). Stay at local establishment The Equinox , or drive a few towns over to exciting newcomer The Weston .
The historical jaunt: Boston
About a four hour train ride via Amtrak Acela
New Yorkers and Bostonians may go head-to-head at times, but if you’re looking for a change of scenery without giving up your cosmopolitan comforts, a weekend trip to Boston might just be what the doctor ordered. The Amtrak Acela departing from Penn Station clocks in at just under four hours, arriving at South Station between downtown Boston and the waterfront. Upon arrival, walk along the cobblestone streets of the Freedom Trail and duck into some of the country’s finest restaurants, bars, and historic sites along the way. Take in the architecture of Boston’s South End or explore neighboring communities Cambridge and Sommerville . There’s no shortage of great hotels in Boston —old or new—making the classic New England city an ideal weekend excursion for every type of traveler.
The good-time island: Fire Island, New York
About a two-and-a-half hour drive, plus a 30-minute ferry ride
An all-time favorite summer escape, and one that is especially important to NYC’s queer community, is Fire Island. With its many towns and beaches, each boasting their own local flavor, the Long Island barrier island makes it easy to choose the spot to match your vibe. A few popular spots: Cherry Grove is a fun-loving party destination, Kismet is known for its nightlife, and Fire Island Pines is an affluent community with a dining and shopping scene and some of the island’s most expensive addresses. A worthwhile hotel option is the Madison , the boutique bed and breakfast where the cast of Fire Island stayed while shooting the recent film. (A few other spots it featured? The bar Cherry’s which offers harborside drag shows, vintage shop DENIZEN , and the Belvedere Fire Island , a palatial resort for gay men.)
The city break: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
About a two-hour drive; about an hour and fifteen minutes via Amtrak
It may be obvious, but it’s too easily forgotten by New Yorkers: the easy urban getaway to nearby Philadelphia. The city is budding with things to do, whether you’re in search of great new restaurants, fantastic art exhibits, or just a change of pace. A few of our favorite to-dos in Philly include visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art, followed by the perfect cheesesteak at John’s Roast Pork . Betsy Blumenthal, former Traveler features editor—and resident Philly expert—recommends the city’s Four Seasons for its spectacular aerial views of landmarks like Independence Hall. (For even more destination tips, check out our comprehensive Philadelphia city guide. )
The posh beach hang: The Hamptons
About a two-hour drive
For many, the Hamptons conjure visions of Upper East Siders summering in their mansions, and flitting between high society parties. A weekend is the perfect stretch of time to slip into that whirlwind before letting the city ground you once again. Classic to-dos like visiting the Pollock-Krasner house in East Hampton (open May to October), designer shopping in the villages, and waterfront dining are always a good idea, as are summery outdoor activities. Pedal around the Atlantic Avenue Beach area with a bike rental from Amagansett Beach & Bicycle Company , savor a hefty lobster roll at the Dock House in Sag Harbor, or find inner peace in bird-filled Hither Hills State Park . A classic East Hampton stay, the Maidstone Hotel is the perfect place to post up (if you don't have an invite to one of the aforementioned mansions, that is).
The eclectic island: Martha’s Vineyard
A five-hour ferry ride
Sometimes an island is the best escape. Martha’s Vineyard, with its lighthouses , arcades and carousels, sandy shores, and vast landscapes fits the bill. To get there, take a five-hour Seastreak Ferry from Midtown Manhattan, fly from JFK airport, or drive to Falmouth, Massachusetts (about 4.5 hours), and pay for overnight parking before grabbing the 30-minute ferry from there. The colorful, fairytale-ish town of Oak Bluffs is one of our favorite East Coast beach towns ; there, an ideal spot to post up is Summercamp Hotel . Deeper into the island, stop at Aquinnah, which feels martian-like with its clay-red lighthouse and cliffs.
The wine tour: The Finger Lakes
About a four-and-a-half-hour drive
New York’s biggest wine region offers plenty of options for sampling its famous riesling—but wine tasting is hardly all the area has to offer. The adventurous can pencil dive into a gorge or wade under a waterfall. Or stay above water: Canandaigua Sailboard offers paddleboard yoga , kayaking, and windsurfing. Between four and five hours from New York City , the Finger Lakes are just far enough to be a true escape. From Ithaca to quaint Skaneateles, there are a number of places that make for an ideal home base. Boutique hotel Argos Inn in Ithaca is one of them. We love the romantic renovated mansion for the original art prints in each room, some by Salvador Dalí.
The nautical overnight: Mystic, Connecticut
About a two-and-a-half hour drive, three hours by train via Amtrak
Mystic’s maritime history gives this town a classic New England feel. Even today, it remains recognizable by the boats that sail the Mystic River and Long Island Sound. History buffs can immerse themselves in the lore with a visit to the Mystic Seaport Museum , where there are reproductions of the Mayflower II. For another take on all things aquatic, visit the Mystic Aquarium , where African penguins waddle and Beluga whales swim. Enjoy the charm of eateries like Nana’s Bakery and Pizza , which mills its own flour, as well as the Oyster Club for fresh and locally-caught fish. Stay a night or two at the Whaler’s Inn , which has historical pull (it’s been around since 1818), yet was renovated in 2021. Its modern comforts include four-poster beds, gas fireplaces, water views, and an excellent farm-to-table restaurant, the Shipwright’s Daughter .
The classic coastal destination: Newport, Rhode Island
About a three-hour drive
There’s so much to see in Newport , one of New England’s most storied summer towns. Do up your weekend T-Swift-style with winding coastline drives, half-pound lobster rolls, and wanderings through Gilded Age summer “cottages” as they were called in the 1920s. During the day, take in sweeping Atlantic Ocean and mansion views on the famed Cliff Walk or boogie board at First Beach. Then, when it starts to get dark, visit the Roof Deck at the Vanderbilt hotel for a sunset drink. For a luxury stay, consider spending a couple nights at the aforementioned Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection . If you’re looking for a homey group spot, check out this two-bedroom cottage a few steps from the beach. However you do it, it'll be easy to see why Newport is one of the best weekend getaways from NYC.
The quick camping trip: Cold Spring
About an hour-and-a-half train ride or drive
For an easy camping trip that doesn’t require a car, your spot is Fahnestock State Park . The campsite is near the Cold Spring stop on the Metro-North’s Hudson line—a short Uber ride covers the gap from the train station to the park itself. Squeeze everything you need for a night or two into a backpack , and relish in the empowerment and self-sufficiency of being 100% mobile. The hiking trails that run through the park connect to the vast Appalachian Trail, which touches 14 eastern seaboard states from Georgia to Maine . Besides hiking, the park has a beach on Canopus Lake, and fishing on four ponds and two additional lakes. On your way home, stop at Hudson Hil’s for a decadent brunch in the town of Cold Spring (we’re eyeing the Creole omelette) then walk to the train. If you’re looking to expand your journey throughout the region, there are many towns to love and explore in the Hudson River Valley area, including Beacon , Hudson , Kingston, and Rhinebeck.
The off-season gem: Lake Placid
About a five-hour drive
Better known as a winter destination , Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics, has a wealth of outdoor recreation in the summer months, too. At glassy, serene Mirror Lake, visitors can paddle out on canoes and kayaks . On the Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails, hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers will pass the shimmering lake, cedar trees, and a population of otters. The Olympic sites include the magical Cloudsplitter Gondola ride, a rifle range, a glass elevator, a speed skating oval, a zip line park, the Herb Brooks Arena, and the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. If you're craving some time indoors, don't fret: The area’s old-fashioned movie theater at Tupper Lake Municipal Park, Adirondack State Theater, is currently screening One Life. Bed down at Lake Placid Lodge , a former summer camp .
The mountain escape: The Berkshires
About a three-and-a-half hour drive
The Berkshires , in western Massachusetts and northwest Connecticut, is one of those places that offers entirely different types of trips with every passing season. In the summer, the region is known for the anticipated Tanglewood season, in which the Boston Symphonic Orchestra and Boston Pops take residence and perform. In the fall, visitors can drive through some of the world’s most vibrant foliage along Route 2 and 7. Come winter, cold-weather sports are on offer—whether you’re looking to downhill ski or snowshoe. With the thaw of spring, hikes with waterfall views are easy to find at Bash Bish Falls State Park. Year-round, the food and drink scene won’t disappoint either: For an artisan cocktail after the sun goes down, visit Berkshire Mountain Distillers ; to enjoy a plate of shrimp gumbo, visit Nudel ; and to savor the notorious local cheeses, visit the North Adams’ Farmers Market. As far as hotels go, we have a few ideas. Restorative Canyon Ranch, Lenox is a six-time Readers’ Choice Awards winner, while Miraval Berkshires is one of New England’s largest and most renowned spas.
The great outdoors: Lake George
About a three-and-a-half-hour drive
Set in the Adirondacks in upstate New York, Lake George offers lots of open space and a slower pace of life. Take in the natural beauty with a scenic drive on NY-9 or NY-418, admire falcons at Bolton Landing, or shack up in a tent at the Lake George Island campsite . Other summer outdoor activities include fishing, cycling down the Warren County Bikeway, and golfing at the breathtaking Top of the World course. Boathouse Bed and Breakfast is the only B&B located directly on the lake , and has the most serene water views.
The peaceful spot: North Fork, Long Island
For a low key Long Island alternative to the Hamptons, the bucolic North Fork and adjacent Shelter Island are what you're after. Head first to Greenport, North Fork’s largest town which is known for its marinas, fishing boats, neighboring vineyards, and blooming fields of lavender in July. Sound View Greenport is our pick for where to stay in town. Their fisherman-and-farmer-forward restaurant the Halyard is open, too—don't sleep on the summer truffle and fresh cavatelli. Then, take the ferry from nearby North Haven to Shelter Island, where you'll find hiking trails, osprey, and salt marshes at the Mashomack Nature Preserve, and even more land to explore on the protected beaches or in the acres of forest. If you are strategic about avoid common travel times (Friday evening out of the city, Sunday evening to return), you can be in North Fork in just two hours, making it a surprisingly quick weekend getaway from NYC.
The artist’s haven: Woodstock
The best place to start in Woodstock may be the slopes of Overlook Mountain. The limestone peak, full of red oaks, firs, and (keep your eyes peeled) timber rattlesnakes, features some interesting ruins, like the eerie remains of Overlook Mountain House, which brought tourists to the Catskills in the 19th century and sits just south of the Overlook fire tower. If privacy is what you’re looking for, you might consider this bright and airy studio loft decorated in a farmhouse style. While you’re there, scoop up quality produce at Sunflower Market , or if you don’t want to turn on an oven in the summer heat, snag a table outdoors at Phoenicia Diner . The cult favorite is a treat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Highly recommended: the Phoenicia Smash sandwich (beef griddled into caramelized onion, mustard, mayo, New York cheddar, and pickles on a Brioche bun).

A successful family vacation needs to accomplish many goals at once. Whether you’re planning a quick spring or winter break getaway, a summer weekend escape, or just need an impromptu vacation, the chosen destination needs to satisfy each family member, young and old. The United States is full of superb, something-for-everyone weekend getaways from the South to the East and West coasts, with some Midwest highlights in between. These choices span cities, islands, mountains, and lakes. Everyone’s demands met.
1. Mackinac Island, Michigan
Best for : Stepping back in time and unplugging
Visiting this island and National Historic Landmark at the gateway to Michigan’s showstopping Upper Peninsula is a bit like time travel. Not only are there no cars allowed, but there are also centuries-old forts, notable Victorian architecture, and horse-drawn carriages, which you’ll see all around the island and especially on Main Street. That central drag is also home to some of the best and oldest fudge shops in the country, a grocery market born in 1884, galleries depicting the Mackinac’s famous lilacs, and toy stores selling kites and other nondigital amusements. Nature is big: Hiking and biking trails abound, and next to the iconic Arch Rock is the newly opened Milliken Nature Center . One of America’s oldest hotels, the Grand Hotel , begs visitors to sit on the world’s longest porch, have afternoon tea, play a round of mini golf, or barrel down the dirt bike track.
Soaks in the Warm Springs Pools are priced at $30 per person for a 50-minute session on weekdays and $35 on weekends and holidays.

2. Bath County, Virginia
Best for : Family wellness and a dose of presidential history
About four hours from Washington, D.C., Bath County has an abundance of healing mineral springs that have attracted Native Americans, doctors, and presidents, and it’s a great place for the whole family to immerse themselves in—literally. Start at the historic Warm Springs Pools , which date to 1761 and were a favorite of presidents like Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. The Ladies’ and Gentleman’s Bathhouses, which last year underwent a $4 million rehabilitation to preserve and restore them, are octagon-shaped wooden buildings surrounding two warm pools, and both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register.
There’s a daily dedicated co-ed family hour (pool noodles included) that needs to be booked in advance. The charming town of Hot Springs is a few miles down the road. There you can visit Sam Snead Tavern, named for the legendary golfer who got his start on the adjacent courses, and the Duck In Deli & Market for coffee and milkshakes. Other attractions include the Garth Newel Music Center concert hall, more than 160 miles of hiking trails, and Falling Spring Falls, a breathtaking 80-foot waterfall that Thomas Jefferson once visited.
Whether you stay overnight or not, the Omni Homestead Resort , which has been welcoming travelers since 1766, is worth a visit. Set on 2,300-acres, the resort boasts a turn-of-the-century movie theater, 10 bars and restaurants, an expansive hot spring spa, and several natural hot springs. Activities include skiing and tubing in winter and horseback riding, falconry, fly fishing, and mountain biking in summer.
3. Lake Oconee, Georgia
Best for : Family lake life
While beaches will always be popular with families, lakes are a wonderful destination for all ages. The nearly-20,000-acre Lake Oconee in central Georgia is about 90 minutes from Atlanta, a perfect weekend escape. The lake offers activities from boating to swimming, jet-skiing, and paddleboarding. Out of the water, the 100-acre- Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds has endeavors for most ages, including a sporting clays instructional games area and archery range.
There are also seven championship golf courses , some designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Bob Cupp, and hiking trails surrounding the lake that traverse wetlands, forest, meadows, and archaeological sites . On rainy or cold days, head to historic downtown Greensboro and visit the Greene County African American Museum , which details the lives and history of the county’s African American population, and then shop for souvenirs at Genuine Georgia and the Ripe Thing Market , which sells prepared foods like jams and chocolate and handmade crafts, all by locals. If you don’t do a vacation home rental, the hotel to stay at is the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee resort, which has a kids club, scenic lakefront, new spa, and an arcade and game room.
The Catskills are easily accessible from both the New York and New Jersey metro areas.

4. The Catskills, New York
Best for : Family adventures from skiing to water parks
The Catskill Mountains just north of New York City are a large region filled with adventure opportunities. Winter brings skiing at resorts like Hunter Mountain , Windham Mountain Club , and Belleayre Mountain , which is perfect for beginners. Water parks are a thing here no matter the season, with numerous options offering watery fun all year long. Try Kartrite for indoors and Zoom Flume for outdoors. When the weather is warm, take advantage of the lovely surroundings, which include hikes of all skill levels with plenty of waterfalls, high peaks, and wildlife to ogle.
When it’s time to a refuel, head to one of the many cute towns nearby, like Livingston Manor, Saugerties, Callicoon, Catskill, or Woodstock; all have charming Main Streets filled with boutiques, cafés, and ice cream shops (in Saugerties, try Alleyway , in Callicoon there’s Ollie Grey’s , and Cone-E Island is in Catskill). Larger cities like Hudson and Kingston have even more shops and restaurants and are also worth a visit. Consider staying at Mohonk Mountain House , an all-inclusive resort set along a private lake, with activities ranging from snowshoeing, tubing, and ice-skating in winter and biking, boating, and horseback riding in summer.

5. Indianapolis, Indiana
Best for : Affordable family fun
This Midwestern city is a great place to visit with kids without breaking the bank—even the flights here are comparatively cheap. Indy boasts the world’s largest children’s museum , which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025 and has exhibits ranging from dinosaurs to space. Several pro sports teams make their home here, plus there’s the famous Indy 500 and its Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum , which reopens next year after an $89 million renovation as an immersive and high-tech experience. Newfields houses the Indianapolis Museum of Art, various formal gardens, the historic Lilly House, a seasonal outdoor beer garden, and the Virginia Fairbanks Art and Nature Park, 100 acres of woodlands dotted with large-scale quirky art installations like Funky Bones , a massive cartoon skeleton in the ground that kids can climb all over.
Another must visit is sprawling White River State Park , which is home to the Indianapolis Zoo; Eiteljorg Museum of Native American and Western Indian Art; Indiana State Museum, with the state’s largest IMAX screen; the NCAA Hall of Champions; and a concert stage. Families can also rent paddleboats or reserve a ride on a Venetian gondola with a singing gondolier (yes, really). Stay at Bottleworks Hotel , which is inside the city’s old Coca-Cola bottling plant in a burgeoning district with a food hall and bowling alley and pinball arcade .

6. Park City, Utah
Best for : Year-round active family adventures
Deer Valley in Park City is a paradise for skiers of all ages thanks to no snowboarders, a top-notch ski school and daycare , and pristine lodges and lifts. But Park City is also a summer hot spot, with hiking, biking, and horseback riding amid stunning mountain back drops. Summer also brings lots of outdoor concerts, with musicians playing rock and country, and barbecues , plus a variety of adventure day camps for kids from infants to age 12 that will keep them busy with activities like sports, nature studies, scavenger hunts, and art.
Aside from skiing in winter, kids and parents will have fun snowmobiling, dog sledding , and snowshoeing , and the après scene here is legendary. Dine at family friendly restaurants like Sammy’s Bistro , Twisted Fern , and Five5eeds , or for a more upscale experience, the Glitretind at the Stein Erickson Lodge is a fine dining option with a decent menu for kids. Montage Deer Valley has an excellent kids club, plus a spa for parents to unwind, Daly’s Pub & Rec with darts, bowling, and arcade games, and a private snow tubing area in winter. Its partnership with Uppababy offers stroller and other gear loaners, lightening your packing load.
Kids will be fascinated by the Wright Brothers National Monument, which marks the first successful airplane flights in 1903.

7. Outer Banks, North Carolina
Best for : Wide beaches that aren’t overdeveloped
While many East Coast beaches are overcrowded with people and developments, the Outer Banks, a stretch of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, remain blissfully uncongested. They’re also home to some of the state’s best beaches, complete with impressive sand dunes, wild horses, and epic waves. If you have a big, extended family gathering, the vacation rentals in the area are larger and less expensive than those of most Northeast beach towns.
While there are ample options to select as your base, from Cape Hatteras to Duck to Nags Head, look to Kitty Hawk as the closest town to the Wright Memorial Bridge from the mainland. Aside from the beach, you can check out the Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve or climb to the top of the massive sand dunes at Jockey Ridge State Park—daring teens and grownups can also hang glide. The area is home to fascinating history. Learn about the Wright Brothers’ first flight at the Wright Brothers National Memorial and discover the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island through a live reenactment.
8. Las Vegas, Nevada
Best for : Thrill-seeking families who want to be entertained
Yes, Vegas is known as a playground for adults, but it’s also a prime spot for kids, thanks to creative activity parks, thrilling rides, and even wildlife. Start at the recently opened PopStroke Las Vegas , a tech-friendly mini golf center from Tiger Woods, complete with two 18-hole courses, a restaurant, playground, and ice cream parlor.
If it’s too hot to be outside, check out AREA15 , an indoor entertainment park filled with everything from virtual reality rides to laser mazes to live shows. And If your family likes thrill rides, go to the five-acre Adventuredome indoor theme park that houses 25 rides from roller coasters to carousels. To see the city from above, ride the High Roller observation wheel, and to brave four of the world’s highest thrill rides , head to the Strat Hotel. For a more old-school experience, the Pinball Hall of Fame has more than 200 vintage pinball machines on display, and it costs just 25 to 50 cents per game. Animal lovers shouldn’t miss the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat , a lush outdoor space that’s home to Chilean flamingos and other birds. For more animal adventures, the Lion Habitat Ranch has all kinds of rescued animals and the Shark Reef Aquarium houses more than 2,000 marine animals. Finally, if the family wants to see a show, Cirque du Soleil Mystique and Jabbawockeez are both appropriate for all ages.

4. Ashland, Oregon
If you love live theatre check out the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. This repertory theatre is one of the major festivals around the world. And if you’re not a theatre fan? You can go wine tasting at Long Walk Vineyard or explore the lush greenery at Lithia Park.

Chattanooga is two hours south of Nashville and a beautiful destination for a weekend getaway. Lookout Mountain is a must-see stop as is a hike through Audubon Acres along the South Chickamauga Creek. The city also offers museums, walking tours, and a thriving arts district.
6. Portland, Maine
The east coast shoreline is beautiful to stop along if you’re traveling up or down the coast. Portland, in particular, offers some of the best lobster rolls you’ll find. With a city close to the beach and great restaurant options, what more do you need?
7. Kansas City, Missouri
Visitors agree some of the best (if not the best) barbecue comes out of Kansas City, Missouri. Not to be confused with Kansas City, Kansas, which sits right on the other side of the state border. The cities may share a name, but one has a much superior barbecue.
8. Detroit, Michigan
The Motor City may have roots in the automotive industry, but nowadays, there are so many communities to explore it’s worth a weekend trip. Check out flea markets, antique stores, and its multicultural food scene. Not to mention the pride locals have for their city is unmatched and only enhances the experience.
9. Savannah, Georgia
Many tourists flock to this smaller city during fall and October to experience the spooky season, but Savannah is a great year-round destination, too. Visually, you can’t beat the Regency architecture and oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Not to mention the beautiful waterfront with cool bars and awesome restaurants to choose from.
10. Bend, Oregon
Tucked along the eastern edge of the Cascade Range, Bend is a small city with a big personality. It’s perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who want a weekend full of hiking, biking, or whitewater rafting. Also, it’s home to the last Blockbuster in existence. So cool!
11. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Summertime in Milwaukee means baseball season, Summerfest, and beach time along Lake Michigan. Throughout the year, the city hosts several ethnic festivals as well—Irish Fest, Bastille Days, and Polish Fest, to name a few.
12. Boise, Idaho
Although Boise has seen a surge in transplants since the pandemic, it’s still a relatively undiscovered destination. With tons of walking and bike paths along the river, plus a short drive from nearby ski resorts, if you’re looking to spend time outdoors think about Boise when planning your next trip.
13. Albuquerque, New Mexico
Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta draws thousands of visitors each year—rightfully so because it’s amazing to see. But you should also visit throughout the year to enjoy hiking trails, visit museums, and learn about the indigenous Pueblo people and culture.
14. Santa Cruz, California
Nearby Monterey might get all the tourists, but Santa Cruz is a cozy little surf town with tons of ocean activities. Spend the day at the Beach Boardwalk (for free), bike ride down West Cliff Drive, or have dinner on the Wharf. Beach and ocean lovers will never want to leave.

10 Best Beach Towns For Girls' Weekend Getaways
Pack your bags for sun, sand, and freewheeling fun.
The beauty of close friends is that you can have a good time with them just about anywhere, but there’s no denying that a sun-soaked location with pristine beaches, festive restaurants, and plenty of personality doubles the fun. Lucky for those of us who call the South home, we don’t have to travel far to find a destination that’s home to the winning combination. Here, we’ve rounded up the South’s best beach towns for girlfriend getaways.
St. Augustine, Florida
Turn back the clock with a trip to the Ancient City. This place may be the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States, but it’s also famously home to Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archeological Park , where you can sip from a fountain that folklore promises will restore your youth. But if the legendary water doesn’t do the trick, you’re sure to at least feel younger here, where you can savor strolls on the unspoiled beaches of Anastasia State Park , sample fresh seafood at family-owned Aunt Kate’s restaurant, and climb to the top of historic fort Castillo de San Marcos for a spectacular view of the coastline.
Tybee Island, Georgia
For a beach weekend with a dress code that leans more casual, less resort, head to this barrier island just 18 miles from downtown Savannah . This is a flip-flop kind of town, where the best itinerary is the one that requires getting outside and enjoying the scenery. Climb the state’s oldest and tallest lighthouse; take bikes for a spin down the shore; or head out on a sunset boat cruise, where you may even spot wild bottlenose dolphins. Plus, the proximity to Savannah means your crew is just a short drive away from the city’s many lauded restaurants and shops.
Sanibel, Florida
Cedric Angeles; Styling: Celine Russell/Zenobia; Dress: Boho Me; Hat: Mar Y Sol
Score white sand beaches and sparkling cerulean waters without the hassle of updating your passport with a trip to this Florida island, whose unique east-west orientation makes it a prime spot for shelling. When you’re not treasure hunting on the shoreline, explore 25 miles of bike trails and scout more than 230 species of birds at J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Alabama
Courtesy of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism
Mention this part of the world, and someone will immediately bring up the iconic Flora-Bama Lounge, Package, and Oyster Bar , the sprawling beachfront dive famous for live music, wild people-watching, and the Bushwacker—a frozen rum drink with coffee and chocolate flavors that’ll knock you off your feet. But there’s so much more to the area than the famed honky tonk. Soak up the sun on 32 miles of sugar-sand beaches and take kayaks for a paddle along the Coastal Alabama Back Bay Blueway.
Folly Beach, South Carolina
If you’re looking for a California-cool, surf-town atmosphere without the cross-country flight, this salty island hamlet just 12 miles outside of Charleston delivers. There are six miles of beachfront to stretch out on if that’s your main pursuit for the weekend, but when you’re ready to shake off just a little bit of the sand, the town’s main drag will keep you busy. It’s lined with surf shops (including McKevlin’s , South Caroline’s oldest surf outfitter) and colorful local eateries, like Chico Feo , where Vietnamese and Mexican flavors seamlessly mingle, and Rita’s Seaside Grille , where the boozy Signature Crushes invite you to linger over a long, leisurely lunch or dinner.
Ocean Springs, Mississippi
If you’re unfamiliar with this stretch of the Gulf, it may seem unexpected that this Mississippi town plays host to one of the region’s coolest stays, The Beatnik , a boutique hotel featuring four floating cabins perched along a sleek pool. But for those familiar with Ocean Springs’ creative heritage and nationally accredited Walter Anderson Museum of Art , it’s hardly surprising that such a unique hotel would pop up here. Layer in quiet Front Beach and sunset picnics orchestrated by Coastal Picnic and Company , downtown’s boutiques, and a catfish restaurant with a downstairs cocktail lounge once frequented by Elvis, and you’ve got all the makings of a girls’ getaway to remember.
Fernandina Beach, Florida
The art-loving set will love this historic, charming town on Amelia Island, where galleries like Blue Door Artists featuring the works of local creatives make souvenir shopping a breeze. But if the art scene doesn’t win you over, the 13 miles of spectacular beaches and the “World Famous Pirates Punch” at the state’s oldest bar, The Palace Saloon , will surely do the trick. For a magical day trip, make the short drive to St. Marys, Georgia, to catch a ferry to Cumberland Island , where you can explore maritime forest and potentially spot wild horses.
Port Aransas, Texas
The once-sleepy fishing village is wide-awake in the summer months, and when it comes to a vacation that allows your group to explore their adventurous side and indulge in a little luxury, there’s no better destination than this one. Experience the spot’s angling legacy with a deep-sea fishing charter, where you may reel in tuna or sailfish (hello, dinner!); or visit Mustang Island State Park 20 minutes away to witness the area’s diverse wildlife. For a luxurious stay, book a rental property in nearby Cinnamon Shore , where paddleboard yoga in the pool, evening beach bonfires, and fine dining make for a very comfortable weekend away.
Dunedin, Florida
When it comes to the Sunshine State’s countless beaches , you’ll likely hear about 30A’s powdery stretches of shore or Miami’s coast, with its pastel-hued lifeguard stands, long before anyone mentions this Gulf coast town about 25 miles from Tampa. But that’s just the beauty of Dunedin. Here, you’ll skip the crowds and instead enjoy its many riches in relative peace, from its colorful downtown storefronts to its ample breweries to nearby Honeymoon Island State Park , with its four miles of pristine beaches and A+ birdwatching.
Bay St. Louis, Mississippi
Let’s hear it for the comeback kid. Decimated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Bay St. Louis has officially got its groove back. Just 51 miles from New Orleans, this easygoing spot can claim some of the Big Easy’s winning attributes (like ironwork and colorful buildings in charming Old Town Bay St. Louis , and fluffy shaved ice treats, compliments of Ms. Mary’s Old Town Snoballs ), but it can also do it one better, with pet-friendly beaches that make it easy for your crowd’s four-legged friends to tag along.

Why Sorrento should be your next Italian gastronomic getaway
The charms of this classic Italian town go far beyond its good looks - visit for Michelin-starred food reflecting the Bay of Naples region.
Perched on the edge of a cliff, overlooking Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, Sorrento’s location has long been part of its appeal. A historic centre of narrow alleyways and medieval architecture only adds to the allure with hotels, restaurants and gift shops secreted among its warren of streets.
Long after Roman emperors favoured it as a retreat, the town became a stop on the aristocratic Grand Tour and its popularity grew immensely in the 19th century, when Byron, Keats, Goethe, Dickens and Nietzsche all spent time here.
Visitors spend lazy afternoons sat in piazzas, at beach clubs at the base of the cliff, close to the harbour, or simply indulging in the seafood, gelato and local wines that Italy traditionally excels at.
And while it’s well placed as a base for exploring Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast, there are enough reasons to stay local. The town’s Museo Correale art museum is housed in a patrician villa and beyond the town centre there are coastal hikes, secluded beaches and ever-present lemon groves to explore.
The experience
Italy might be a fastidious country when it comes to cuisine and tradition, but there are almost 400 Michelin-starred restaurants and plenty of experimental, inventive chefs making their mark with dishes that challenge — or play with — those customs. Terrazza Bosquet’s executive chef Antonino Montefusco is one such chef. Sorrento-born, he draws on the region’s culinary heritage and uses local ingredients, notably from the property’s gardens. And his training in some of Europe’s top kitchens gives him a platform for this creativity.
As the lights twinkle on the other side of the Bay of Naples, the sumptuous setting and panoramic views might suggest a fussy, formal experience but what you actually get is a sense of theatre — and a menu that shows food can be fun and serious at the same time. Service is attentive and welcoming, perfectly judged so that waiters only seem to appear when you need something.
With a choice of four tasting menus, there’s plenty of opportunity for Montefusco to show off what’s grown on his doorstep, or coming from local suppliers. Intricate starters, such as baby octopus with chickpeas and pea soup or red mullet with chicory salad and anchovies, offer colour and flavour in abundance. The same could be said of a pasta dish served with smoked potatoes, chives and caviar — a scattergun of orange, purple, green and white on the plate.
But the showstopper is a lemon sorbet that pays homage to Sorrento’s famed lemon groves. It’s made in front of you with liquid nitrogen, cloudy smoke billowing across the table as the whole spectacle draws to a close. terrazzabosquet.exvitt.it
Celebrating its 190th anniversary this year, the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria occupies a prime position in Sorrento — three adjoining buildings sit proudly atop the cliff, overlooking the harbour. The spectacular views are obviously a given but, set in five acres of private gardens, it also offers a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of the centre despite being just set back from Sorrento’s main piazza.
The hotel doesn’t wear its traditional Italian decor heavily, with light colours, marble and intricate, high ceilings creating a breezy, Mediterranean atmosphere. And with just 81 elegant rooms, the property never feels busy — walking through the grand corridors and public rooms, you almost feel like personal guests of the Fiorentino family, who have owned and operated the hotel since 1834.
If the restaurants, bars, pool, spa and grounds themselves don’t occupy you completely, the private lift down to the harbour can see you whisked off to Capri within an hour — private boat optional, of course.

26 top places to see fall foliage in the u.s. in 2024.
Hit the road or the trail to view vibrant fall leaves across America.
The Top Places to See Fall Foliage
Getty Images
There's no other time of year quite like fall. Brisk, cool mornings give way to sun-warmed afternoons, and the dropping temperatures create a kaleidoscope of colors as the leaves change before winter sets in. The displays of color are different across the U.S., but they're all brilliant when leaf-peeping season is at its peak.
Peak leaf season varies by region and by year, depending on the weather, so it's best to check with local sources before you go. Many top destinations to view fall's splendor have leaf and foliage maps and trackers so you can follow the local predictions and current conditions – and arrive just in time for the best of the season. Some of these destinations will be familiar, while others are lesser-known locales where you can capture and embrace fall's beauty.
So, pack your jacket and jeans, then grab your camera to capture one of nature's best spectacle.
Acadia National Park, Maine
Acadia National Park covers nearly 50,000 acres along the rocky coast of Maine. Located about 160 miles northeast of Portland, the park boasts the diverse natural beauty of the Atlantic shoreline, including majestic mountains. Peak leaf season in Acadia traditionally falls in the middle of October. This is when you'll see the vibrant displays of oranges, reds and yellows, especially along the Acadia All-American Road, one of the best scenic drives to view the fall colors.
While visiting Acadia , plan to stay at the nearby coastal town of Bar Harbor , considered to be the gateway to the park. Bar Harbor Inn & Spa , situated along picturesque Frenchman Bay, is an outstanding choice for an overnight stay: The historic property offers impressive views of the water as well as Maine's Porcupine Islands. While in town, you can take a whale watching tour and treat yourself to a traditional lobster dinner at Beal's Lobster Pier.
McKenzie River Scenic Byway, Oregon
Melanie Griffin | Courtesy of Eugene, Cascades & Coast
The 34-mile McKenzie River Scenic Byway extends from the vineyards of the Willamette Valley to the forests of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon , treating travelers and road-trippers to views of some of the Pacific Northwest's most beautiful landscapes. Plan your visit for peak season when the golds and reds are most vibrant, usually in mid-to-late October.
The McKenzie River boasts some of the best fly-fishing in Oregon, so anglers will want to cast off for native redside rainbow and cutthroat trout along the way. Other highlights include stops at local farm stands and at Goodpasture Bridge in Vida, which is the state's second-longest covered bridge. For an extended romantic getaway that includes days spent fly-fishing, whitewater rafting and hiking to waterfalls, make reservations at the Eagle Rock Lodge, a bed-and-breakfast for couples in Vida.
The Berkshires, Massachusetts
Situated about 130 miles west of Boston and surrounded by mountains, the Berkshires are one of the most scenic places to view fall foliage in New England . The leaves begin changing at the end of September, but peak season starts around mid-October. You can expect to see colors ranging from golden yellows to vivid oranges to deep reds. If you're up for a hike, take the Stony Ledge trail from the Williamstown side of Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts at nearly 3,500 feet. This route offers one of the best viewing points of the foliage from midway up the mountain.
Back on the ground, the Berkshires feature world-class arts and entertainment offerings along with a deep-rooted food culture with many locally focused dining options. You can also explore the apple orchards and hops farms along the Berkshire Farm & Table Beer & Cider Trail. For accommodations in the Berkshires , splurge on a stay at The Williams Inn, an upscale hotel with a contemporary design that emulates local farmhouse architecture.
Charlottesville, Virginia
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia, Charlottesville offers spectacular scenery accentuated by fall's vivid hues. Mid-to-late October is when you'll usually see the most dazzling red, orange and yellow leaves, but the colors can linger into early November, depending on the weather. Some of the best viewing spots with scenic overlooks are along the neighboring Blue Ridge Parkway and the connecting Skyline Drive in nearby Shenandoah National Park .
When you're not leaf peeping, plan to visit Thomas Jefferson's Monticello: the former home, gardens and grounds of the third U.S. president. Travel along the Monticello Wine Trail to sample some of Virginia's award-winning vintages at wineries such as Michael Shaps Wineworks, Barboursville Vineyards and Jefferson Vineyards. In the evenings, travelers can unwind over a seasonally inspired dinner at Marigold by Jean-Georges before settling in at the beautiful luxury property Keswick Hall.
Bucks County, Pennsylvania
Courtesy of Visit Bucks County
Bucks County's picturesque country roads and covered bridges create an idyllic setting for viewing fall's colorful palette. Located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania and bordered by New Jersey and the Delaware River to the east, Bucks County has a rich Revolutionary War history and is known for its thriving cultural and arts community. Peak leaf season typically occurs in mid-October, bringing vibrant hues of yellows, oranges and reds to the area.
For a scenic escape to the Pennsylvania countryside, make reservations at The Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm, a luxury B&B in Holicong. You can spend your brisk fall days exploring the shops and restaurants in New Hope or checking out the annual Scarecrows in the Village display at Peddler's Village in Lahaska. Visitors may also want to take a self-guided driving tour of Bucks County's 12 covered bridges or sip and savor local wines along the Bucks County Wine Trail.
French Lick West Baden, Indiana
Courtesy of French Lick Resort
Located in southern Indiana, French Lick West Baden is a resort community nestled in the hills of Hoosier National Forest that features some of Indiana's best leaf-peeping locales. The yellows, oranges and reds are usually the most vivid from mid-October and later, with peak colors appearing at the end of the month. For active adventures in the colorful scenery, go hiking, biking or horseback riding. You can also hop on board a train ride into the forest on the French Lick Scenic Railway. When you want to kick back and relax, spend an afternoon sipping wine with a view on a Fall Foliage Wine Cruise on Patoka Lake.
There are three hotels to choose from at the historic French Lick Resort, including the newest property, the 71-room Valley Tower Hotel. A must-see no matter which property you choose is the stunning atrium at the West Baden Springs Hotel . Spanning 200 feet wide and constructed more than a century ago, this engineering feat was once known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." While at the resort, you can enjoy all of the amenities, including three golf courses, two spas and a Vegas-style casino.
The Mississippi River Valley, Minnesota
Colorful wooded bluffs, steep hillsides and quaint river towns are all highlights of the Mississippi River Valley region in southern Minnesota – best enjoyed on a leisurely drive. The nearly 90-mile route from the town of Red Wing to La Crescent on U.S. Route 61 also features scenic overlooks, including two must-see locations at Great River Bluffs and Frontenac state parks. This drive along the Mississippi River – part of the 3,000-mile Great River Road, which begins in Minnesota and runs south through 10 states to conclude in Louisiana – celebrates peak fall colors from late September to mid-October.
As you take in the brilliant hues of russet, red and gold along the ride, be sure to stop for an afternoon snack at a roadside apple stand. Bird lovers may be eager to see the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota. While in this town, grab dinner and a beer before spending the night at Turning Waters Bed, Breakfast and Brewery. Further down the road, don't miss the town of Winona, home to the small but impressive collection of works that explore the human relationship with water at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.
Breckenridge, Colorado
Situated at 9,600 feet above sea level in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge is one of the first places in Colorado to witness fall's brilliant changing of the leaves. While the aspen trees' golds, reds and oranges usually peak by late September, the season can linger into early October. For optimal leaf viewing, plan to drive the 22-mile Boreas Pass: This route begins in Como and heads north to Breckenridge.
While visiting, enjoy brisk fall days hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding or fly-fishing surrounded by the beauty of the Rockies. If you're in town in mid-September, don your best alpine gear and attend the festivities at Breckenridge Oktoberfest. For an extended stay with a view, reserve accommodations at The Lodge at Breckenridge . This property nestled atop a forested cliff is regarded as one of the world's highest-altitude hotels at 10,200 feet.
Hudson, New York
Nestled in the Hudson River Valley in Columbia County, around 120 miles north of New York City , Hudson is a small town that offers a distinct food, arts and farming culture. There's also a unique history to explore, especially when it comes to architecture: Known as a "dictionary of architectural history," Hudson boasts many well-preserved buildings from almost every major period in America. The area's bounty of trees produce brilliant red, orange and gold hues beginning at the end of September, with peak viewing time around mid-to-late October.
For a unique way to see the foliage, get a designated driver and plan a road trip around the Hudson Valley Wine and Craft Beverage Map, which features more than 100 wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries. After the drive, browse the town's boutiques and antique shops before checking into The Hudson Whaler Hotel, a beautifully restored property in the heart of downtown.
If you'd prefer to cruise the Hudson River Valley to see the fall foliage, American Cruise Lines offers summer and fall Hudson River cruise itineraries. The round-trip sailings from New York City include five stops in New York state: Catskill, Albany, Hyde Park, West Point and the town of Sleepy Hollow, which is the home of Ichabod Crane and the legendary tale of his flight from the headless horseman.
Willamette Valley, Oregon
Fall is harvest season in the Willamette Valley and one of the best times to visit the renowned wine region. The days are sunny and cool during peak foliage, which typically falls around mid-October. Leaf peepers can expect to see brilliant hues of yellow, orange and red against the deep green shade of the evergreen Douglas fir – the state tree of Oregon. Willamette Valley is home to more than 700 wineries, with many producing internationally acclaimed vintages, so you may want to hire a private guide to craft your itinerary around the best wines and the best views.
McMinnville is situated in the heart of wine country and is a perfect base for exploring the region. The historic downtown offers plenty of non-wine fun with quirky shops and art galleries and restaurants featuring locally sourced and award-winning cuisine – including ōkta, which is helmed by Michelin-starred chef Matthew Lightner. For an overnight stay, reserve accommodations at the luxury boutique Atticus Hotel. The 36-room hotel features seven distinct room categories, including the Luxury Bunkhouse that's perfect for a getaway with friends in Oregon's wine country.
Stowe, Vermont
Nestled at the base of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak, Stowe is one of the most picturesque villages in New England. It's also one of the best places to view the annual fall spectacle, with colors changing from early September through the end of October. Vermont is around 80% forested and boasts plenty of sugar maples, so autumn visitors can admire vibrant displays of red, gold and yellow leaves across the state. One of the prettiest drives to see the foliage is along the Smugglers' Notch Pass through the Green Mountains in Smugglers' Notch State Park.
If you're planning for several days of leaf-peeping activities, a room at the Austrian-inspired Trapp Family Lodge can be your home base while you go horseback riding, rent a canoe or hop on the seasonal Stowe Gondola SkyRide to the summit of Mount Mansfield for unparalleled views. Back in town, check out local breweries like The Alchemist or von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall.

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire
Set in the White Mountains of New Hampshire , Bretton Woods is one of the top destinations in the state to view fall foliage. Leaf-peeping season begins in mid-September and continues through late October – this is when the most vibrant yellows, oranges, reds and even purples will paint the surrounding mountains. Due to the many tree species, it can be hard to predict peak foliage in this area, but you'll likely have the most luck around the second week of October.
To enjoy the spectacle for several days, make reservations at the Omni Mount Washington Resort . This historic property sits at the base of the highest peak in the Northeast, giving guests a front-row seat to the show. During your stay, dash through the treetops on a zip line canopy tour, enjoy a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride or take a thrilling trip on the Mount Washington Cog Railway. You may also opt to take in the sights on a gondola ride and have lunch atop the mountain. Back on the ground, book a signature spa treatment and relax with expansive views of the Presidential Range, Crawford Notch and Mount Washington from the therapy rooms.
Northwoods, Wisconsin
The Northwoods of Wisconsin comprises five counties boasting thousands of lakes and vast forests perfect for fall leaf-peeping adventures. The northern part of the state offers some of the best foliage viewing in Wisconsin, typically between mid-September and early October, when you can see vibrant shades of orange, red, yellow and purple. If you want to experience the local art scene – and take in the autumn views – the Northwoods Art Tour takes place every fall in October. Visitors can stop at dozens of unique sites featuring artisan jewelry, pottery, woodwork, glass pieces, sculpting, painting and more throughout the Northwoods.
Stop for a few days in Boulder Junction to see more of the area and take in some of the outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, kayaking and more. Located in Vilas County, the charming town is home to hundreds of biking and hiking trails and nearly as many lakes. You'll also find cute local shops to peruse and casual restaurants downtown and on Main Street. Take your pick of rustic cabin-style accommodations and private rentals or reserve a room at one of the motor lodges in town: Boulder Bear or Boulder Junction.
Highlands, North Carolina

Highlands is also located in a temperate rainforest, so the vegetation is lush and there are many waterfalls, rivers and lakes to explore in and around the area. Leaf-peeping season typically begins in mid-October, when you'll see leaves starting to turn bright yellow and orange, as well as deeper hues of red, rust and even purple.
There are many active outdoor activities to enjoy in this region, such as hiking, fly-fishing and golfing, but the community also has a vibrant cultural arts scene. During your visit, check out the exhibits at The Bascom (a visual arts center), as well as events at the Highlands Performing Arts Center and the new Mountain Theater Company. While in town, reserve accommodations at Old Edwards Inn and Spa . This beautiful Relais & Châteaux property, located in the heart of Highlands, puts visitors within walking distance of the many restaurants and boutiques located on Main Street.
Whidbey Island, Washington
The 55-mile Whidbey Isle Scenic Way is one of the driving routes along Puget Sound in what's known as "Washington's ultimate road trip": the Cascade Loop. Peak color along the loop typically occurs between late September to mid-October with brilliant shades of gold, orange, and red – and you'll have plenty of opportunities for leaf peeping with all the farms, parks, mountains and wineries along the way. The scenic drive on Whidbey Island begins as you cross over historic Deception Pass Bridge and head south toward the largest town on the island, Oak Harbor. This coastal city is home to Deception Pass State Park and many Garry white oak trees that are native to the Pacific Coast.
In Coupeville, the second-oldest town in the state, more than 100 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stop for photos at Fort Casey State Park and the Admiralty Head Lighthouse before feasting on local Penn Cove mussels at one of the waterfront restaurants. Other highlights on the drive include Greenbank Farm, where you can sample local wines and cheeses surrounded by the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade Range, as well as the town of Langley, known as the "Village by the Sea." This charming artsy community sits atop a bluff overlooking the Saratoga Passage and the Cascade Mountains.
Letchworth State Park, New York
Letchworth State Park, fondly known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is home to some of the most striking fall foliage views in the U.S. The park's 14,300-plus acres of lush forest usually hit their peak in early-to-mid-October, when leaf peepers will be treated to yellow, orange and red foliage framing the magnificent Genesee Gorge and Genesee River. Explore this unique setting on miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, including the park's new Autism Nature Trail, a milelong hiking loop with marked sensory stations. You can also take to the skies in a hot air balloon with Balloons Over Letchworth, the only company that launches from inside the gorge.
While you're visiting Letchworth State Park, be sure to check out the surrounding Wyoming and Livingston counties for fun fall activities. You can soak in the views in Wyoming County with a Fall Foliage Train Ride on the Arcade & Attica Railroad, or head to Livingston for a free ranger-led walking tour of the Mount Morris Dam. When you're ready to relax, explore local craft beer, wine, cider and spirits along the LivCo Libation Loop. Stay the night in the heart of Letchworth State Park at the Glen Iris Inn, which offers convenient access to both counties and overlooks Middle Falls on the Genesee River.
Tunnel of Trees, Upper Peninsula of Michigan
Known as the Tunnel of Trees, this 20-mile scenic route follows the historic Michigan 119 highway between Harbor Springs and Cross Village. The area's canopies of golds, oranges, yellows and crimsons are on display typically from late September to mid-October. A few highlights for travelers include visiting the picturesque waterfront resort town of Harbor Springs and sampling authentic Polish cuisine at the iconic Legs Inn restaurant in Cross Village.
For overnight lodging, plan to stay at The Highlands, a Boyne Resort in Harbor Springs. This property offers many outdoor activities, including zip lining, horseback riding, biking and swimming. While here, reserve a seat on the Heather Express chairlift: This excursion to the top of the mountain affords incredible views of Little Traverse Bay, Harbor Springs and the area's beautiful fall foliage.
North Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada
North Lake Tahoe, which unfurls across both California and Nevada, is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, so there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure, from kayaking and paddleboarding to boating and relaxing on the area's many beaches. When it comes to viewing fall's splendor, hundreds of biking and hiking trails with 10-plus different species of native trees show off the red, orange and yellow foliage.
The best time to see the colorful leaves is from about mid-September to late October, especially at the top leaf-peeping locales: Tahoe Meadows, Ellis Peak, Mount Rose Summit and Sugar Pine Point State Park. For a memorable getaway, book accommodations at the Everline Resort & Spa at the base of Olympic Valley. Amenities at this luxury resort include a golf course with a view, a luxurious spa and various outdoor experiences, such as guided fly-fishing trips, hiking and backpacking.
The Ozarks, Arkansas
Situated in the northern part of Arkansas , the Ozark Mountains are the perfect destination to explore the outdoors and marvel at autumn's palette of bright golds, reds and oranges. The transformation typically begins around the second week of October, and peak colors appear by late October. One of the top spots to view the foliage is in the Buffalo National River area around the small town of Ponca. This beautiful wilderness destination in the mountains offers the opportunity to disconnect and get away from it all.
While here, take time to hike or float down the river – all the while keeping an eye out for wild elk. Fall is when the bulls are battling to become king of the herd, so they're especially active during this time of year. Plan to reserve one of the cabins in the mountains above Ponca. Vantage points from these properties yield incredible stargazing opportunities, as well as memorable sunrise and sunset views.
Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway, Maryland
The roughly 40-mile scenic drive from Emmitsburg to Point of Rocks runs along U.S. Route 15 in Maryland . Known as "hallowed ground" and considered sacred by some, this long stretch of road highlights significant Civil War sites and pristine natural areas, including Catoctin Mountain Park, home to the presidential residence Camp David. The best time to make the journey to view the foliage on the Maryland route is between late September and early November, with peak season around mid-October.
One not-to-be-missed detour is a stop to see the 78-foot waterfall and gorge in Cunningham Falls State Park. If you're after a challenging hike with great views, travelers say Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson can't be missed. Afterward, spend time exploring the shops, art galleries, distilleries, breweries and restaurants in the historic city of Frederick. You can book an overnight stay at one of the charming local B&Bs, such as 10 Clarke. If you're up for more fall festivities, visit nearby Gaver Farm in Mount Airy, whose Fall Fun Fest has a corn maze and more than 65 attractions, including a zip line, a chicken show, jumping pillows and giant slides.
Adirondacks, New York
The Adirondacks offer leaf peepers 10 distinct regional destinations covering more than 6 million acres in the northeast corner of New York state. Adventurers can head to the Lake Placid region in late September and early October to hike the Adirondack High Peaks, which offer the best mountain vistas during peak fall foliage. While you're in the region, be sure to visit the Olympic Jumping Complex. Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the ski jumps for a bird's-eye view of the Adirondacks before heading back down on a zip line.
In the first two weeks of October, you'll find peak leaf peeping around Lake George, a popular vacation spot with 109 miles of shoreline and 300-plus islands. Hike nearby Prospect Mountain for a breathtaking view overlooking the lake's beautiful blue waters and the vibrant yellows, oranges and reds of the surrounding forest. For an authentic Adirondack stay without sacrificing resort luxuries, book a vacation rental at The Lodges at Cresthaven. Located on the shores of Lake George, this resort property offers a host of amenities along with Adirondack decor and panoramic views of the lake.
Anchorage to Kenai, Alaska
The epic landscapes of Alaska are awash with vibrant reds, purples, yellows and oranges – and even snow-capped mountaintops – from late August through September as fall arrives in The Great Land. The autumn colors across the state's vast wilderness, forests and tundra change quickly as winter approaches, beginning in mid-to-late August in the Arctic regions and lasting as late as October in southern areas like Tongass National Forest.
This roughly 160-mile drive on the Seward and Sterling highways from Anchorage to Kenai travels along two National Scenic Byways. You'll find many vantage points along the way to take in the jaw-dropping views and capture photos. The first 50 miles of Seward Highway follow the Chugach Mountains and the shoreline of Turnagain Arm, where you may catch a glimpse of Dall sheep, beluga whales and eagles. From Tern Lake to Skilak Lake on Sterling Highway, you won't want to miss the sight of the Kenai River's teal glacial waters set against the orange and yellow leaves.
For a side trip en route, visitors can plan to stay in one of the recently refreshed Signature Rooms at the beautiful Alyeska Resort, about 40 miles southeast of Anchorage. Indulge in a day at the Alyeska Nordic Spa and, if you visit by mid-September, take a ride on the aerial tramway to the top of Mount Alyeska for panoramic views from above. Be sure to save up enough energy to chase the aurora borealis in the wee morning hours, as the northern lights dance across the night sky from mid-August to mid-April in Alaska .
The Poconos, Pennsylvania
One of the best ways to view the Pocono Mountains' vibrant fall hues of reds, yellows, oranges and purples is with a scenic drive along U.S. Route 6 in Pennsylvania. This road meanders through charming towns like Milford, Hawley and Honesdale, where you can take in autumn festivities that include the Hawley Harvest Hoedown and Honesdale's Harvest and Heritage Days. Another optimal viewing spot for the foliage is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area with its 70,000 acres of forests and wetlands, the two tallest waterfalls in the state, and more than 150 miles of hiking trails.
The peak season for vibrant leaves in the Poconos depends on the region (north or south) and the progression of temperatures in the fall, but you can typically expect the best viewing from mid-September through the peak season in early-to-mid-October. For up-to-the-minute information, check the fall foliage forecast on the Poconos Mountain website . After a busy day of exploring, The French Manor Inn and Spa is the perfect place to kick back, relax and admire even more of autumn's beauty. This luxury property is perched atop Huckleberry Mountain in Newfoundland, offering spectacular views of the kaleidoscope of leaf colors.
Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
The majesty of Mount Rainier, with its summit reaching 14,410 feet above sea level, is even more breathtaking surrounded by fall's vibrant colors. While you can see the peak from miles around, a drive through Mount Rainier National Park can bring you up-close viewing of the spectacle. Top leaf-peeping areas include the White Pass Scenic Byway to Chinook Pass via Bethel Ridge – if you have a high-clearance vehicle. Visitors may consider making a side trip to Cash Prairie before venturing on to Timberwolf Mountain. Peak season to capture the brilliant crimsons, ambers and golds can vary, but it typically occurs between mid-October through early November.
While in the park, enjoy other favorite fall activities such as foraging for local mushrooms – chanterelles, hen-of-the-woods and matsutake, for example. You can also book an early-morning Elk Bugling Tour at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park to see the Roosevelt elk sparring during their "rut," or breeding season. For rustic accommodations to enjoy the great outdoors while visiting the park, reserve a cabin or campsite at Mounthaven Resort.
North Conway, New Hampshire
For prime autumn foliage in one of the best small towns for an adventure, head up to North Conway in New Hampshire . Located roughly 85 miles north of Portsmouth, this small town is encompassed by the White Mountain National Forest and home to Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast. With dozens of foot hike options through the surrounding 700,000 acres of protected forest, there's no shortage of leaf-peeping opportunities. Peak colors typically paint the landscape with vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow from the end of September into the first two weeks of October.
A ride along the Kancamagus Highway – affectionately called "The Kanc" by locals – is a must-do. The 34-mile scenic drive will immerse you in a fall wonderland as it winds through the New Hampshire countryside, but make sure to fill your tank before you set off, as there are no gas stations or stores along the highway.
While you're in the area, don't forget to indulge in North Conway's other unique activities. Enjoy the perks of tax-free shopping at Settlers Green Outlet Village or grab a chairlift ride at Cranmore Mountain Resort. If you decide to hop aboard the historic Conway Scenic Railroad, experience 360-degree views of the fall foliage in a deluxe dome car on the 1950s-era transcontinental streamlined train. When you're ready to settle in for the night, the Cranmore Inn, a boutique inn located in the center of town, blends modern amenities with historical charm.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park encompasses more than 522,400 acres across the states of North Carolina and Tennessee. The Smokies are known for their incredible display of autumn hues with about 100 species of native trees. At 4,000 feet in elevation and above, leaf peepers can expect to see intense shades of red, orange and brown during peak season, which is typically around early-to-mid-October. Lower-elevation towns like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg will experience peak color around mid-October to early November.
The highest summit in Great Smoky Mountains National Park , Clingmans Dome, sits at 6,643 feet and offers one of the best views of the foliage, with panoramic vistas from a 54-foot observation tower. The 11-mile one-way loop at Cades Cove (accessible from the nearby town of Townsend, Tennessee) is another top spot for seeing the colorful display in the park. This scenic valley features hiking trails, historic homesites, a visitor center, a campground, a riding stable and a picnic area.
Clingmans Dome and Cades Cove can be very busy with tourists in the fall, so another option is to take a drive on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which is a round-trip scenic route from downtown Gatlinburg. You can also head out on one of the many hiking trails in the park to see Mother Nature's spectacle. If you're planning to stay a few days to explore the park and the nearby towns, make reservations at the Historic Rocky Waters Inn, A Small Luxury Hotel in Gatlinburg. The property also offers curated guided experiences inside and outside the park for its guests.

Fall in Kyoto looks like bright-crimson Japanese maples framing the famous temples and lining the urban streets. It's one of the best fall foliage destinations in the world, but autumn is overshadowed by the more touristy cherry blossom season. It's a tradition for temples across the city to show off their colorful trees with nightly lights in November. Don't miss the spectacle at Toji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The colors are especially stunning on the hillsides of Arashiyama, a popular sightseeing district for its bamboo forest. If you're hoping for a fully immersive nature retreat here, staying at Muni Kyoto is the way to go.
Sonoma, California
Steve Proehl/Getty Images
Fall in California's wine country is magical. You can tour Sonoma's famous vineyards and wineries while they're cloaked in beautiful red, orange, and yellow foliage, or take a ride on the open-air Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley . When you need a break from sipping vino, go for an easy hike on the East Trail at Bodega Head for sweeping ocean and bay views, then refuel with some fresh seafood. Montage Healdsburg offers a luxurious stay and plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the fall colors with outdoor yoga classes, miles of hiking trails, and guided e-bike tours.
Yellowknife, Canada
Rex Chang/500px/Getty Images
Yellowknife is often described as one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights . The magical and elusive aurora borealis is easier to see dancing across the sky from mid-November to April, so head north to the only city in Canada's Northwest Territories at the tail end of fall to catch the celestial phenomenon. Short autumn days are easily filled with craft brews from the NWT Brewing Company , dogsledding adventures, and other snow activities.
Greenville, South Carolina
Sean Pavone/Getty Images
In upstate South Carolina, Greenville makes the ideal base camp for leaf-peeping hikes and drives. Stay at the Grand Bohemian Lodge , a hotel perched atop the falls of the Reedy River, and take trips out to Table Rock State Park or Jones Gap State Park for a refreshing dose of nature. In town, you can admire urban foliage with a picnic in Falls Park, embark on a self-guided brewery tour, or rent a bike from Reedy Rides and pedal along the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail.
Trade cooler autumn temperatures for warm Bermuda in the fall. The average daily highs reach the low to mid-80s in September and October — optimal weather for relaxing on Bermuda's iconic pink-sand beaches. Plus, from many East Coast travel hubs, it's less than a three-hour plane ride to this British Overseas Territory 600 miles off the coast of North Carolina — from New York City it's just over two hours in the air. The Loren at Pink Beach and the Hamilton Princess are among the popular luxury accommodations on the island.
Asheville, North Carolina
Nestled in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville has everything you could want in a fall getaway. The quaint downtown area is filled with unique shops, galleries, breweries, and restaurants, and you're almost guaranteed to see some local street performers as you wander around. Go for a hike in nearby Pisgah National Forest to see beautiful waterfalls among the changing leaves, or take in the beauty on a scenic drive to avoid working up a sweat.
The Biltmore Estate is another popular Asheville attraction worth visiting. This Gilded Age mansion is the largest privately owned house in the United States, complete with gardens and a winery. For private and cozy accommodations, search the many tree houses and cabins on Airbnb .
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
The gateway to some of the country's best national parks and most popular ski areas, Jackson Hole is a great place to visit year-round. Fall is the best time to avoid large crowds and see the colorful mountain foliage. The ski season typically starts at the end of November, so time your trip for early fall to enjoy mild weather without the high-season visitors. Surrounded by Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, Bridger-Teton National Forest, and mountains and lakes galore, opportunities for outdoor adventure abound.
Take a scenic drive (and look out for moose and bears), go for a hike, or visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art . For a luxurious stay during your outdoorsy fall getaway, check out the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole on the outskirts of Teton Village. Or consider The Virginian Lodge , a mile from Jacksons Town Square.
New York City
With the summer heat gone, fall is a great time to visit New York City. Explore all the shops, restaurants, and museums the Big Apple has to offer, or relax and watch a show on Broadway. Pick a hotel located along Central Park, like The Mark , Park Lane , or JW Marriott Essex House , all of which provide park views so you can enjoy the canopy of changing leaves from the comfort of your room. Of course, you'll want to grab some coffee and stroll through the iconic park to soak in the skyline vistas amid colorful trees.
Tuscany, Italy
Massimo Santi/Getty Images
The vivid fall hues of aspens and maples are one thing, but grape leaves are in a league of their own. Looking out over rows upon rows of vines on the Tuscan horizon is like poking your head into a painting. The rolling hills of Italy's wine region turn a deep rust color as the crop goes dormant and their fruits are harvested. Plus, fall is olive season. You can even get involved in the olive-picking ritual at Tenuta Torciano Winery and stay right there at the boutique Torciano Hotel , overlooking the grounds.
The Berkshires, Massachusetts

If you want to escape to rolling hills of stunning fall foliage, head to the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. There are several charming towns to choose from, including Lenox, Stockbridge, and Pittsfield, and at this time of year, you can drive from town to town while enjoying views of the colorful scenery. For the best Berkshires experience, stay at The Lenox Collection , composed of three charming inns — The Constance, The Dewey, and The Whitlock — housed in beautifully renovated 18th- and 19th-century buildings.

Variegated vegetation blankets Iceland's vast natural landscape in the fall, when darkness really starts to descend on its capital. From September to October, Reykjavik loses three hours of daylight, and another three hours from October to November. By December, the days last only about four and a half hours — ideal for aurora chasers. October is one of the wettest months of the year, too, which makes the already mind-boggling waterfalls of Iceland rage even harder. Don't skip the 70-mile side trip to Gullfoss Falls to see it cloaked in fall color. Visiting Reykjavik in the shoulder season means you might even get good deals on luxury accommodations like a room with floor-to-ceiling windows at the Retreat at Blue Lagoon .
Flagstaff, Arizona
Justin A. Morris/Getty Images
Flagstaff is a nature lover's dream, especially in early fall. This Arizona city is surrounded by national forests, monuments, and parks, so there's plenty to see and explore. Learn about Native American history and culture at Wupatki National Monument , where you'll find pueblos that were occupied in the 12th century, and visit the Petrified Forest National Park to see petrified wood and the hills of the Painted Desert. The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is just a 90-minute drive away, so you can easily take a day trip to this incredible landmark and enjoy milder weather and fewer crowds compared to the summer months. If you visit in September or early October, consider glamping at nearby Under Canvas Grand Canyon , which is open until late October.
Burlington, Vermont
Eduardo Fonseca Arraes/Getty Images
Burlington is doused in color as the leaves change every autumn, making it one of the best fall vacation destinations in the United States. Spend a day picking apples at one of the many nearby orchards, visit a pumpkin patch, or take a scenic drive to check out the beautiful foliage. After a day spent exploring, enjoy a local beer or two at one of the craft breweries in town. Hotel Vermont offers charming accommodations in the heart of the city, near the Lake Champlain waterfront.
The Scottish Highlands

It doesn't get much dreamier than the Scottish Highlands in the summer, but fall tops it. The hills take on a kaleidoscope of warm tones, and if you come early enough in the season, you might even see the purple heather in bloom. Chilly temperatures in the 40s and 50s are the best excuse to find a pub with a fireplace and warm up with mulled wine and soup. Glencoe and Cairngorms National Park are two popular places within 2.5 hours of Edinburgh. In the former, the five-star Glencoe Inn puts guests right at the base of munros bursting with color; in the latter, stay at The Fife Arms , a lodge bursting with Victorian charm.
Telluride, Colorado
You might think of Telluride as a winter ski destination, but this Colorado town is beautiful all year round. Early fall is ideal if you're looking for colorful foliage in a breathtaking mountain setting. Visit in September or early October to take full advantage of the season's offerings. Go for a hike or bike ride, or take in 360-degree views of the mountains and valley from the gondola, which runs through mid-October before pausing until the winter season begins. With proximity to hiking trails, Madeline Hotel & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection provides a cozy launchpad for all your outdoor activities.

Sure, brightly colored foliage is nice, but autumn is also an excellent time to head to beachy tropical destinations. On Maui, you can lounge on beautiful beaches, go hiking in a rain forest, or just relax at one of Hawaii's best resorts . One of them, the adults-only Hotel Wailea , is perfect for a romantic getaway, while the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea offers a complimentary, daily Kids for All Seasons activities program for ages five to 12.
Portland, Maine
While folks flock to Vermont and New Hampshire for the celebrated fall foliage, you can head to this city on Maine's coast to enjoy similar scenery without such intense crowds. If you love lobster, fall is your last chance to eat it fresh and in abundance while it's still in its peak season. Maine's favorite crustacean is still active through autumn, as are the marine mammals in these waters. Go in October to spot whales as they migrate south.
Williamsburg, Virginia

Horse-drawn carriages travel streets lined with colonial buildings and shade-shifting trees in the country's largest living history museum, Colonial Williamsburg. Pretend you're in the 18th century as you explore this old-timey town, where bonnets and cravats abound. Travel + Leisure readers have voted Williamsburg as one of their favorite U.S. cities in the World's Best Awards . Visit during the fall to see it in vivid color, and if you're a fan of the spooky season, don't miss the opportunity to go on a ghost walk with a tour guide dressed in colonial garb.

Take in the colors of the trees lining the Deschutes River, enjoy quiet(er) hiking trails in Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint , and search for the best pumpkin beer at any of the dozens of breweries in this nature-filled high-desert oasis. You might even be able to make some of the first runs on the ski slopes of Mt. Bachelor , typically kicking off the winter season in mid- to late November.
Mexico City
Late fall is a great time to visit Mexico City , as the weather is dry and the tourists aren't as abundant, offering a more local experience. Día de Muertos on November 1 and 2 ushers in the season with parades, displays, markets, and street parties, though you might want to avoid this period if you're hoping for a quiet getaway. For the nature lover: Prepare to be awestruck on a day trip to nearby Santuario Piedra Herrada, which comes alive with countless migrating monarch butterflies each November. See? There's something for just about everyone in Mexico City during the low season.
