The Contoocook River Canoe C ompany has been offering rentals of kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards since 1997. The rentals are reasonably priced and offer packages for different lengths of time. You can even reserve your rental in advance.

Pierce, to this day, is still the only New Hampshire resident elected to the presidency.
Today, the Pierse Manse has been turned into a historic landmark and museum. Coffee Shop Hop in Downtown Concord
One of our favorite ways to get to know a local community is to check out their coffee shops, and Concord has a few nice spots on offer. Soon you’ll be saying, “I love you a latte!”
The Brothers’ Cortado is a cozy and welcoming coffee shop that opened on Bicentennial Square in downtown Concord. The menu features lattes in interesting forms like the Mocha Borgia, a mocha latte with orange essence, and the citrus clove latte has a lot of fans, too! They serve up delicious cinnamon buns and host frequent game nights, too.
Revelstroke Coffee is named after a little Canadian mountain town, but inside it’s all New Hampshire pride, with a perfect view of the gold-domed State House. Owners Lyndsey and Alex started the coffee shop after driving all over the Granite State to sample what different shops in the Granite State had to offer. Here you can enjoy unusual offerings like pistachio blood orange flavor shots, espresso with ginger rose syrup, and regular and vegan breakfast sandwich “chubbies.”
The Bean and Bakery , newly arrived in 2022 in the space where White Mountain Gourmet Coffee used to be, is a delicious local coffee roaster with terrific pastries. The cafe in Concord has both indoor and outdoor seating and a menu full of different coffee blends, breakfast sandwiches, muffins, and other breakfast food options.
And if you’re more a chocolate person than a candy person, you’ll love hitting up Granite State Candy Shoppe in the heart of downtown.

You can get a jar full of boozy strawberry smash, lemonade, apple pie, and more. They’re great to keep in your fridge for an impromptu celebration.
The tasting room is open Thursday through Sunday for spirit tastings.

Old North Cemetery
Love walking around historic cemeteries? We’ve got a great one here in Concord. Old North Cemetery is a historic cemetery on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Originally established in 1730 and it’s the burial place of Franklin Pierce, the 14th president and Concord’s most famous residents.
The cemetery is about six acres in size, and surprisingly, they’re still accepting new burials to this day. That’s rare in New England cities.
You can take a wander through the cemetery in search of President Pierce’s grave, but as this is still a working cemetery, please be respectful of any mourners that you come across here.

Chuckster’s
Chuckster’s is an outdoor family fun park located in Chichester, just outside Concord. Activities here include mini-golf, go-karts, zip-lining, an obstacle course, batting cages, bumper boats, rock climbing, and more!
There are also various one-on-one games, and the mini-golf course has the longest hole on the planet. Hole number 13 is 201 feet long!
Each attraction at the park costs somewhere between $5 and $25, depending on the activity. It’s a great place to bring the whole family when the weather is nice.
(And here’s a special recommendation from the NHW team — if you’re spending the day in Chichester, hit up Chichester Country Store for some delicious homemade cider donuts!)
Canterbury Shaker Village
Located in the town of Canterbury, NH, about a 20-minute drive from Concord, Canterbury Shaker Village is a historic site and museum and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1993. It’s one of many Shaker communities from the 19th century, but it’s the most intact and authentic Shaker site.
Canterbury Shaker Village was established in 1792 by followers of founder Mother Ann Lee. The religious group was originally formed in England during the 18th century and eventually emigrated to the U.S., starting communities throughout Maine to Kentucky. Today, the museum displays 200 years of Shaker life through historical buildings, exhibits, and artifacts.
The Shakers — formally the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing — were an interesting crowd of people. The Shaker religion encouraged pacifism, gender equality, and community building. However, they also believed in celibacy, which is why there are only three registered Shakers living today, all of them at the one remaining active Shaker community in Maine.
If you’re in Canterbury and up for a little bit of vice with your virtue, we recommend checking out Canterbury Aleworks for a beer.

There has been an orchard on Carter Hill since the middle of the 1700s and in recent years the orchid has grown considerably and offers many choices to the people of Concord. There is a large variety of apples grown at the orchard and these can be picked by the visitor or purchased from within the country store, most of the apples are in season during September and October. Come hungry and thirsty because in addition to popcorn and soft drinks, the non-profit theater's Indie Cafe serves sandwiches, Mitchell’s salsa and chips, New Hampshire wines and beers and locally made chocolates. Screenings of foreign, independent, local, nature, classic and family films are complemented by special events.

This city-owned, 85-acre park is lushly wooded and veined with trails that are short but steep enough to demand some exertion. Add in old-growth specimen trees, a peek-a-boo vista of the State House's gold dome, mountain views and — in the fall — striking foliage colors, and this becomes not only a place to stretch your legs and lungs without leaving the city but a must-visit spot for photographers. The property is dog-friendly. Parking is available at the trailhead on Fisk Road.
Sip Concord-Brewed Beers
Lithermans Limited Brewery
New Hampshire's capital offers plenty to excite beer fans. With two innovative breweries of its own and nearly a half-dozen more nearby, you can plan an entire weekend around sampling freshly crafted pints. Concord Craft Brewing Co. was the first nanobrewery to open its doors in the city, and you'll always find eight of their current creations on tap: Many, like Ballot Box Brut IPA, have names with political overtones. Lithermans Limited is actually defying limits: How else can you explain a sour ale inspired by fruitcake? Hang out with the brewers, listen to tunes and sample the latest experimental and seasonal brews. Still thirsty? Blasty Bough Brewing Company , a farm brewery in nearby Epsom, New Hampshire, is worth finding especially on concert nights.

NH Audubon’s oldest environmental center is located in Concord, and it's your place to see birds of prey like a bald eagle, a screech owl and a peregrine falcon, as well as to head out with binoculars on Silk Farm Sanctuary trails to look for native and migrating species. The Susan N. McLane Audubon Center hosts a variety of educational programs that are open to the public, too, such as animal tracking walks and adventure treasure hunts.
Curl Up with a Good Book
The longevity of Gibson's Bookstore is remarkable. Founded in 1898 and still fiercely independent, it's the oldest continuously operating retailer in Concord and a haven for bibliophiles. Not only will you find something here you want to read, you can treat yourself to coffee, tea, treats or lunch at the store's True Brew Café. What really distinguishes this literary destination is its line-up of author talks and book signings: More than 100 events are typically scheduled each year.
Catch a Show at Capitol Center for the Arts
Concord's premier performance venue is one of New Hampshire's best places to see a concert or theatrical production. This classic 1927 theater has been modernized without compromising its charms, and its come-as-you-are vibe makes its eclectic line-up of performances approachable for all visitors. When Broadway touring shows are in town, they're a ticket you don't want to miss. Live Broadcasts from The Met bring New York City opera to this northern capital.
Tour the New Hampshire State House

Built of granite (of course) in Greek Revival style, the gold-domed New Hampshire State House has been in use since 1819. It has the distinction of being the oldest state capitol building in which both legislative houses still meet in their original chambers. You'll learn this and more on a free tour of this building where the live action of governing New Hampshire takes place. Self-guided tours are always available from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. weekdays, and guided tours are also frequently available. Stop into the Visitor's Center when you arrive to check your tour options and to explore the shop filled with unique New Hampshire gifts.
Visit the Pierce Manse

Only one U.S. president has hailed from New Hampshire, and if you're in Concord from mid-June through early October, you can visit his home. Here in his native state, Franklin Pierce is looked upon far more kindly than he is in history texts, where he is frequently dubbed one of the worst presidents of all time. On your tour, he'll become more three-dimensional and more fascinating, and you'll also hear the interesting tale of this building, which was saved from destruction by local supporters and moved to its present location in 1971. Once you've been introduced to Pierce as a tragic and complex figure, you may want to plan a side trip to the president's childhood home, the Franklin Pierce Homestead , which is a half-hour drive west in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, or pay respects to the president at Concord's Old North Cemetery: his final resting place.
Pick Your Own Apples and Other Fruit at Carter Hill Orchard
Yes, New Hampshire's capital has its own apple orchard, and a fall outing to pick fresh fruit from the trees is a tradition embraced by locals and visitors alike. Carter Hill Orchard is also known for its apple cider pressed on-site, and if you visit the orchard, you can taste it unpasteurized and full of apple-y flavor. Other pick-your-own crops that ripen in summer and early fall include blueberries, peaches and raspberries. You'll love the mountain views from these lands, which have been farmed since 1740 and are forever preserved as agricultural space. Shopping in the Country Store is a must, too.
Hunt for Antiques
With 150 dealer spaces under one roof, the Concord Antique Gallery is a treasure hunter's dream come true. You'll find eclectic collectibles, antique furnishings, old books, art, vintage jewelry, vinyl records and gazillions of decor items to recycle and upcycle on two floors in this 10,000-square-foot mall, which is open daily year-round. The best time to shop is during the annual Midnight Merriment event in early December, when hours are extended until midnight and everything in the gallery is discounted.

Few things strike the hearts of Concord natives more deeply than the space shuttle Challenger disaster that took the life of beloved Concord teacher Christa McAuliffe, the would-be first teacher in space. This science center is dedicated to her and Alan Shepard, the first American in space and a native of East Derry, NH. Its mission is to spark interest in today's youth by exploring aviation and astronomy, and earth and space sciences.
The family-favorite attraction here is the planetarium, which displays over 110,000 stars in its twice-daily shows. Guests can also explore the observatory, and the center hosts special events throughout the year to show novice stargazers how to get the most of their telescopes.
The museum also has an amateur radio station that can contact the space station when it is in the right position. The rest of the museum is filled with a variety of exhibits, including hands-on and educational opportunities, as well as artifacts from space and air travel.
Permanent exhibits feature a number of space-themed exhibits including those exploring a lunar habitat, living and working in space, human physiology in space, and the sun. There is also a full-size model of the Mercury Capsule that Alan Shepard was in, and a model of the space shuttle, as well as a full-sized replica of a Mercury-Redstone rocket and an actual XF8U-2 Crusader Jet.
General science exhibits include a Virtual Fish Tank donated by the Boston Museum of Science, an exhibit about New Hampshire Minerals, an interactive infrared imaging station, and an electromagnetic spectrum exhibit.
The newest exhibit is in collaboration with the Mount Washington Observatory , housing most of the museum collection once found at the former Weather Discovery Center in North Conway . This exhibit focuses on weather and atmospheric science, and includes a replica of the "shaky shack" where researchers recorded the earth's highest surface wind speed in 1934 from atop Mount Washington .
The center runs various special programs throughout the year in addition to its permanent and changing exhibits.

Concord's Capital Center for the Arts provides two indoor venues for a range of performances. It also hosts open-air performances in the summer at Fletcher-Murphy Park and at pop-up stages on Main Street during Market Days in June and the Capital Arts Fest in September.

Live performances at the Capital Center include musical performances from all genres, ranging from Weird Al Yankovich to Eagles tribute bands, but also include musical and non-musical theater productions, comedy performances, intimate evenings with various authors, and other performances. Patrons can also attend HD screenings of live performances at major venues like the Metropolitan Opera House.
Visitors can also find live musical performances put on by the students and faculty at Concord Community Music School . The school also attracts professional guest artists, and hosts dozens of concerts every year between October and May, many of which have free admission. Concord's arts scene is always growing, and visitors will find a wide range of public installations along Main Street and near the downtown area, all within just a few blocks.
In addition to the statues found on the State House grounds, there are several other pieces of permanent sculpture that are landmarks within the community. The Eagle Square Arch is the central feature within this space, which also gives a home to the city's largest collection of temporary public art installations, both sculpture and murals.
Bicentennial Square is a smaller but beloved public space nearby that is home to every local kid's favorite, simply titled Turtle Statue, as well as the Stone Curve and Stone Hole . This space often hosts smaller-scale events, including arts shows and music performances.
Temporary public art installations can be found up and down central Main Street, and a self-guided sightseeing tour map can be found online and at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center .
Tourists who love a little spooky with their spice will want to visit Margarita's, a local favorite restaurant housed in Concord's old jailhouse just off Bicentennial Square. Guests can dine in one of the old jail cells, complete with iron bars and old stone walls (as well as the occasional haunting), or enjoy a view of the sculptures from outdoor seating in nice weather.

Those looking for locally made items will want to stop by the League of NH Craftsmen , the retail showcase for some of the granite state's most talented creators.

The theater has three screens featuring Dolby Digital Surround Sound, and one of the cinemas has removable seating to accommodate workshops and receptions.
In addition to films, visitors can enjoy exhibits at the Red River Gallery , a space that displays the work of New Hampshire artists, including paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, and even kids' creations during Youth Art Month.

It was built in 1812 out of locally quarried granite in the Greek Revival style. The visitor center is open weekdays until 3pm, offering both self-guided and docent-led tours. Highlights inside include the Hall of Flags, portraits of historic figures, permanent and changing exhibits, and the original chambers of both houses of legislature, which are still in use.
The grounds of the state house are a lovely place to visit as well, featuring shady trees, stone benches, and numerous statues commemorating important New Hampshire figures. This includes a sculpture of Franklin Pierce, the only US President from the granite state, and George Hamilton Perkins who fought in the Civil War. The statues of Daniel Webster and John Hale were both made at a foundry in Munich, Germany and weigh 2,000 pounds each.

One of the best things about the Canterbury Shaker Village is that visiting and exploring the grounds is free of charge, and guests have the option of taking one of the themed guided tours for a fee. The grounds are home to numerous restored historic Quaker buildings, with 25 original structures and another four that are reconstructed. The oldest of the original structures is the Meeting House, which was built in 1792 and houses a Paul Revere bell, and the largest, which is the 56-room Dwelling House.
Other notable structures are the Brethren's House (1824), Carpenter Shop (1806), Infirmary (1811), Carriage House (1825), Enfield House (1826), and the Fire House (1908).
In addition to historic homes and buildings, the village has nearly 700 acres of countryside to explore.
