What’s More Strenuous Than the Tour de France?

What’s More Strenuous Than the Tour de France?

Pro cyclist Lachlan Morton bikepacked the entire Tour de France on his own, rode an additional 1,303 miles, and beat the peloton to Paris by more than 5 days.

Shortly after the Tour de France officially began, EF Education First – NIPPO cyclist Lachlan Morton embarked along the route himself, riding solo without the support of his team. Raising money for World Bike Relief, Lachlan’s goal was to cross the finish line in Paris before the race competitors did.

Lachlan Morton’s Alt Tour

In the early days of the Tour de France, riders navigated their way through the countryside on their own, stopping in cafes to eat and doing repairs to their bikes themselves. They also didn’t take team buses, cars or flights between stages. This is what Lachlan Morton did. He camped under the stars, skipped the rest days and pedaled the entire distance from stage to stage. Over 18 days, Lachlan rode 3,424 miles and spent 225 hours on the bike (roughly 12 hours per day).

Lachlan Morton's alt tour stats

Bikepacking the Tour De France

If you’re not familiar with the concept of bikepacking, check out our story on Ted King winning the Arkansas High Country Race . While completing the Alt Tour, Lachlan noted that his time off the bike was practically as challenging as the riding itself. “The most difficult part is packing up day after day, riding 12 hours, and the short space you have in between to do a lot of things,” he said. “When I finish I’ve got to find some food, get a shower, clean my clothes, set up camp, try to get some sleep, and look at the route for the next day. That’s the challenge, it’s a lot of things to do in a short space of time when you’re not physically exerting yourself [on the bike].”

Lachlan morton alt tour camping

Lachlan Morton spent his Alt Tour sleeping in a bivy sack and carrying everything he needed with him on the bike.

Ridiculous strain.

Last year, we discussed the immense strain of the Tour de France . Lachlan’s ride took it to another level. “It’s a very different [kind of] tired,” he said. “It takes me 2-3 hours to get going, then I have 5 hours where I feel really good, then the last 4-5 hours is really difficult again. The toll on my body is a lot more, I’ve got blisters and chafe everywhere. Each day I’ve kind of hit my limit in some way, but I haven’t had a total meltdown so that’s a highlight.” While many of Lachlan’s highest daily strain numbers (20.7s on a 0-21 scale) were similar to his teammates competing in the race, he did not have the benefit of shorter stages or rest days.

Lachlan Mortan data days 1-10

Lachlan's RECOVERY was 97% to begin his Alt Tour, but it dropped considerably over the first 10 days.

For example, on Day 5 when his teammates rode a brief 17-mile time trial and averaged a 16.6 strain, Lachlan biked for 231 miles and posted a 20.4 strain. He pushed his body to the max for 18 consecutive days, averaging daily strains of 20.6.

lachlan morton data days 11-19

Lachlan's strain peaked at 20.8 on the final leg of his Alt Tour. Two days later his recovery was back in the green.

Sleep and recovery.

“When you do a regular Grand Tour, from the second you finish a stage until the second you start the next stage, everything’s dedicated around getting you to recover physically for the next stage,” Lachlan explained. “So you get the best sleep, you get massages, you get the best food. Whereas here I ride twice as long each day, so that already cuts massively into any recovery time, and then you’ve got to sort out all those things yourself.”

Lachlan morton alt tour sandals

Lachlan spent the majority of his Alt Tour cycling in sandals. His bike was also significantly heavier than what race riders used.

Lachlan averaged about 5-6 hours of sleep per night during his epic journey. After his 10th day of riding (and a fourth consecutive 20.7 day strain), he said:

“I’ve had probably on average two hours of sleep less than I normally would [per night during the Tour]. My WHOOP recovery score after last night was 33% because there was a bullfighting contest going on next to my campsite.”

Incredible Finish

On the last day of his Alt Tour (following just 4 hours and 38 minutes of sleep and with a 27% recovery) Lachlan continued riding straight through the night, spending more than 20 hours on the bike to travel 358 miles. He finished in Paris at 5:30 am on Tuesday, July 13th. Lachlan burned an absurd 12,000+ calories that day and put up a WHOOP strain of 20.8, something we very rarely see.

30 years on, Sarah McLachlan tours Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

'there's a lot of emotional energy attached to this record for a lot of people,' singer-songwriter says.

A woman sits in front of a radio control board

Social Sharing

About 30 years ago, Canadian singer songwriter Sarah McLachlan released Fumbling Towards Ecstasy , her third studio album.

Now, she's going on tour  to pay tribute to the album that brought her so much success, but most of all, was written during a pivotal time in her life, and has made such an impact on her fans.

"I talked to a lot of people over the past couple months, talking about how [ Fumbling Towards Ecstasy ] got them through the university experience or got them through a breakup or a divorce or whatever," McLachlan said.

"I think there's a lot of emotional energy attached to this record for a lot of people. It'll be great to play it, start to finish."

The tour kicks off May 23 in Vancouver, where McLachlan has lived for over three decades.

She sat down for an interview with CBC's Gloria Macarenko, host of On The Coast, ahead of the tour.

Sarah McLachlan to kick off Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th anniversary tour in Vancouver

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

How would you describe your relationship with this album?

It was my easiest album to make. I was unencumbered in so many ways. I had no partner. I had no children. I got to sequester myself away in the woods in the Laurentians in Quebec and just focus 150 per cent on music. It was also my third record so I had gotten the sophomore freak-out out of the way and was just able to really dig into it and enjoy it. There was a real freedom during that time for me. It was easy and fun and joyful and fun to go back and revisit. Many of these songs I've continued to play through the years, but there's probably four or five of them that I haven't played in 25 years.

  • How Sarah McLachlan turned the music industry on its head
  • Juno Awards host Sarah McLachlan on the music industry's 'unspoken rule' she battled to succeed

People don't play records in full. Nobody does that. They stream a whole bunch of different music. We used to really think hard on the emotional arc of a record and what song to put after the other one because you used to assume they all played as a whole.

You're playing 31 cities across North America in 44 days. How are you preparing for such a rigourous schedule?

I'm eating really healthily, which I do normally anyway. I'm getting a lot of exercise. I think for me, it's sleep. I need to sleep a lot. I'm very boring on the road. I don't talk much during the day to maintain my voice. I'm a little bit concerned about it only because I haven't done it in 10 years and I'm 10 years older. And there's many warranty issues that are now coming up as we age.

My mental energy, I have to sort of protect that a little bit. It's super fun and exciting, but it takes a lot of energy to put on a two-hour show every night and you know, just to recharge during the day is really important.

Sarah McLachlan, a white woman with shoulder-length brown hair, raises her arms in celebration while holding a mic.

This is a fundraiser for the Sarah McLachlan School of Music. What difference will the money raised make for the school?

We rely 100 per cent on donations from folks. I fund the administrative costs every year, but it's not a cheap program to run. It's completely free for children and youth in Vancouver facing barriers to access. It's been almost 22 years now that we've had this school and it's always been free. We have locations in Vancouver, Surrey and Edmonton now, and we have over 1,000 kids for the three schools.

  • Sarah McLachlan helps launch musical instrument lending library in Winnipeg

I love that we provide that opportunity for kids here in Vancouver. Music saved me. When I was growing up, I don't know what I would have done without it. I had lots of private music lessons. We had vibrant music programs in schools and a lot of kids don't have those opportunities these days. For me, recognizing the value and importance of a musical education for me, opening up my own emotional world and giving me a a sense of my own value and self worth, it was just paramount in my development as a human. To give kids that opportunity has just felt incredibly rewarding.

I understand you are recording a new album. What can you tell us about that?

I've been working with a producer named Tony Berg and he is fantastic in bringing together lots of young, vibrant, creative musicians.

I think we're probably going to finish it by October and hopefully have it out by May of next year. I know it seems like a long time, but it typically takes six months once the record's done to get it out to the people.

A woman sits at a piano

In an interview that you did recently with the Canadian Press, you talked about not being political, but whether you have that luxury of being apolitical anymore.

I don't think any of us can be apolitical anymore. I think there's such division going on in the world and so much radicalizing of both sides. We have to figure out how to work together. I think music is an amazing bridge for that.

  • These '90s singer-songwriters kicked down the door for shameless feminism and vulnerability

I think I had a lot of fear coming back into this. I suppose maybe I still do, just about speaking my mind and going to America and getting shot for it just because people are angry and afraid and they're not not necessarily behaving in a civilized manner sometimes. So sure, I have a little bit of fear about it but I have to speak my mind. If someone asked me a direct question, I'm going to answer.

Liv Morgan Has A Feeling The Liv Morgan Revenge Tour Is Just Getting Started

Liv Morgan comments on winning the WWE Women’s World Championship.

At WWE King and Queen of the Ring, Liv Morgan defeated Becky Lynch to win the WWE Women’s World Championship. The win marked a major step in “The Liv Morgan Revenge Tour”, Morgan’s quest to get revenge on Rhea Ripley for sidelining her with an injury in 2023.

Speaking on WWE’s The Bump , Morgan commented on her win.

"I waited eight long months for this moment, to get revenge, to get redemption,” she said. “To show Rhea Ripley why she made the biggest mistake of her entire life. Because I did what nobody said I could do. I finally beat Becky Lynch, and I got my revenge on Rhea Ripley and became new Women's World Champion. But you know what? I have a feeling that the Liv Morgan revenge tour is just getting started.”

Morgan was then asked whether she had a message for the women’s locker room following her win.

“If you don't like it, you can cry about it,” Liv Morgan said. “But if I were you, I'd watch me.”
