Krug Champagne House

Founded in 1843, Joseph Krug had the goal of blending wines of different years to produce a rich and consistent expression of pleasure. The House has a unique and singular approach, which has given it the reputation as the Haute Couture Champagne .

The prestige Krug Grande Cuvée  is the signature champagne of the house and aged for over 20 years. Over 120 wines are blended in this Cuvee taken from 150 reserve wines from the previous 10-15 vintages and 250 wines from a single year.

Did you know that each Krug bottle has a distinctive character using the six digit number that appears on the back label. An interactive Krug application, available on mobile and tablet, allows you to scan the Krug ID and access the unique history: harvest challenges of the year revealed by Cellar Master Eric Lebel, ratings from experts, food inspiration to pair with each cuvee, as well as storage recommendations.

Napa Valley’s Oldest Winery Estate

In 1861, Charles Krug, the visionary father of Napa Valley winemaking, established the winery that started it all. The Mondavi Family purchased this already iconic estate in 1943, and for over 75 years and four generations they have been passionately perfecting an enduring legacy for those generations still to come.

Charles Krug Winery

Charles Krug winery is the oldest in Napa Valley and the first to open a tasting room. Today, it's open to visitors to explore, taste, and discover how this popular destination has forever shaped Wine Country's culture.

Step into the beautifully renovated Redwood Cellar for wine tastings and a glimpse into the winery's captivating history-rich legacy.

charles krug winery

Get to Know Charles Krug Winery

Pioneer winemaker Charles Krug founded this winery in 1861, making it the first in Napa Valley. Closed during Prohibition, the winery reopened after Cesare Mondavi bought it in 1943. Today, it's owned and operated by the Peter Mondavi family who have a wine legacy of their own.

The Charles Krug tasting room is part of the legacy. Dating back to 1882, the Redwood Cellar was the first-of-its-kind tasting room in Napa Valley.

Once home to the Krug's family horses, the Carriage House was lovingly restored and now boasts a second-story called the Great Room. Redwood planks from the winery's original wine tanks were carefully salvaged and repurposed into the cathedral ceiling. Truly spectacular, it's a delightfully charming venue for weddings, receptions and other special events.

The Redwood Cellar, along with the 1881 Carriage House, have been beautifully renovated in recent years and are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Vineyards and Wines

Charles Krug wines are made from grape varietals harvested from estate vineyards throughout Napa Valley. Taking advantage of the diverse terroir of the region, Krug is able to artfully craft a variety of fine wines rarely produced from a single winery.

This winery offers cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, and more -- plus sparkling and dessert wines.

Charles Krug offers one of the most exhaustive wine lists in Napa Valley, but is best known for cabernet sauvignon.

Here are a couple recent stellar reviews for the Charles Krug Vintage Selection Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) 2018:

90 Points, Wine Enthusiast "Made entirely varietal and aged 20 months in French oak, this wine tastes of leather, cigar box and grippy blue fruit. Soft and ripe, it has a touch of tension amidst the powerful density and voluptuous style."

92 Points, Wine Spectator "Intense boysenberry, raspberry and blackberry pâte de fruit flavors drive through, flanked with an applewood note and carried by a deeply imbedded graphite spine. Licorice snap note then echoes on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2032."

Charles Krug Wine Tastings

Wine aficionados and history buffs alike will want to tour these fascinating landmarks. You'll get a peek into the valley's winemaking past as you sample the wines.

You have a few tasting options available. Estate Tasting of limited releases for $50. Better yet, take the tour and tasting for $90 -- you'll hear about Napa wine pioneer Charles Krug's beginnings plus new innovations and explore the estate. Want a private tasting in a cabana for your small group? They do that, too.

If you'd like to skip the formal tastings, stop in the Cucina di Rosa. Here you can savor a charcuterie plate that includes a selection of housemade cured meats, along with locally made cheeses. Pair your plate with a glass or two of limited release wines. You won't need a reservation to visit the Cucina di Rosa -- walk-ins are welcome.

The Fabulous Krug Cellar Tour & Tasting in Reims, France

Maison Krug Reims

Krug Cellars is located in downtown Reims. If you weren’t looking for it you may stroll by it not noticing the subtle unmarked entrance.

Maison Krug Reims

Upon arriving to Maison Krug, we were welcomed with a glass of Krug Champagne as we sat and relaxed in this lovely lounge.

Maison Krug Reims

Cheers to the upcoming visit at Maison Krug and being able to sip on these beautiful wines for the next few hours! I feel like such a lucky girl being able to experience Maison Krug. Sadly this Maison is not open to the public so it’s quite a challenging visit to secure.

Maison Krug Reims

This is the Living Room and Dining Room at Maison Krug.

Maison Krug Reims

After being welcomed with a glass of wine and spending some time learning about the history of Krug we began our tour of the cellar.

Within these cellars resides the House’s vast library of reserve wines to which six generations have contributed. This collection now houses 150 wines, each expressing the personality of an individual plot.

Maison Krug Reims

The tank room where the Krug Champagnes are blended and stored before they’re bottled.

Maison Krug Reims

After our cellar tour, we proceeded to a tasting in this gorgeous tasting lounge. I felt as if I died and went to heaven. What a stunning experience!

Maison Krug Reims

The wall of 40 wines (shown on the right)

“Each year, Krug’s Cellar Master auditions 250 wines of the year and 150 reserve wines when creating a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. While the wall of this tasting room visually depicts these 400 wines, each of which incarnates the essence of a single vineyard plot, audio speakers placed around the space play acoustic representations of 10 different regions of Champagne, to demonstrate the unique contribution of each to the final blend of Krug Grande Cuvée, the most generous expression of Champagne.”

Maison Krug Reims

Our tasting began with the Krug Grand Cuvee. I always enjoy tasting this stunning which has a deep golden color, fine bubbles with lovely fullness and elegant flavors.

Maison Krug Reims

Our tasting included the 2004 Krug vintage, the 2006 Krug Brut concluding with the Grand Cuvee 162. Each of these wines was magnificent with subtle unique tastes and flavor profiles.

It was interesting tasting the 2004 Krug vintage next to to the 2006 Krug Vintage as I found the 2004 lovely with creamy flavors and not too bright or acidity. I loved the nutty noises with caramel scents.

In comparison the 2006 Krug Brut also had the nutty profile yet it was a very hot year which made for a bigger more indulgent profile with beautiful vanilla scents on the nose.

Maison Krug Reims

Views of the Krug garden and patio.

Thanks to the Maison Krug team for hosting me for this informative and delicious tasting. What a spectacular once in a lifetime memory I will always treasure and appreciate.

The Krug Experience: Tasting Review and Photos

Throughout the year, we organise an array of champagne tastings based around different themes – from our comprehensive range tastings to more formal masterclasses – which typically encompass comparisons of anything from vintages, brands, size formats and styles. Of the different themes, our Krug Experiences have consistently proven one of our most popular and have consequently become a fixed feature in our annual tasting calendar.

Our most recent celebration of this most famously prestige effervescence was hosted by Essi Avellan MW at 67 Pall Mall last month. Guests were served five Krug Grande Cuv̩es, 166th to 161st Editions (base vintages 2010 to 2005); and seven Krug Vintages, 2006 to 1995. In addition, four of these champagnes were served from magnum, making it a simply unmissable evening РKrug fanatic or not.

Our thanks to Jack, Krug’s London-based Brand Manager for providing our fantastic welcome drink – the latest release of their non-vintage,  Krug Grande Cuvée 167th Edition NV .

“At Krug, we’re not about consistency but generosity. We don’t work to a rulebook or a formula and want to celebrate the differences from year to year†– Olivier K rug

Krug Grande Cuvée Grande Cuvée is not your average non-vintage. Priced at a similar level to the prestige cuvées of many other major champagne houses, it is a prestige cuvée in its own right. Like other non-vintages, Grande Cuvée consists of wine from several years: a base vintage (the youngest and majority part in the blend) and reserve wines from older vintages. Amongst the many things that make Grande Cuvée unique is that the proportion of reserve wines is unusually high (typically 30-50%) and the reserve wines are unusually old (the youngest Edition in this tasting, 166 (the 2010 base), features reserve wine from 1998).

Given the typically high percentage of reserve wines from such old vintages, Krug manage to produce a very consistent style and quality with Grande Cuvée each year. However, with 50-70% of the blend coming from one base vintage, each Edition inevitably displays subtle differences that showcase the characteristics of that year.

In late 2016, Krug began numbering each Grande Cuvée blend to promote the individuality of each creation and allow the ageing capacity and potential complexity of Grande Cuvée to be understood. Now that Grande Cuvée displays its Edition on the label, the famous non-vintage can be fully appreciated as a series of difference releases – which can now be easily compared, explored and endlessly discussed!

Krug Vintage The next step-up in quality level is vintage champagne, Again, where at most houses the vintage category champagnes situate themselves above the brut non-vintage, but below the top prestige cuvée range, at Krug the distinction is obsolete. Their vintage champagnes reveal the unique characteristics of each year; expert blends of expressive wines enhanced by more than ten years of maturity in the cellars, named to reflect their individual identities: Krug 2000 ‘Stormy Indulgence’; Krug 2002  ‘Ode to Nature’;  Krug 2003  ‘Vivacious Radiance’;  Krug 2004  ‘Luminous Freshness’; and Krug 2006  ‘Capricious Indulgence’.

The potential for a Krug vintage champagne is identified during the blending of Krug Grande Cuvée. Once the non-vintage blend has been secured and all of the reserves earmarked, the wines displaying the most pronounced character of the vintage are blended to create the vintage champagne. This tasting will highlight six vintages of Krug, including 2000 in both bottle and magnum; 2002 , one of the greatest ever; and a magnum of  1995 , newly “late released” and extraordinarily scarce.

The champagnes were tasted blind and are listed below in the order tasted on the evening. Tasting notes and scores are Nick’s from The Finest Bubble. Guests live scored each champagne using our smartphone app and the group average scores are presented in the table of ranking below our tasting notes.

Conclusion While each of the champagnes showed amazingly well (18.2/20 average score!), the magnum effect was once again the star of the show. Each of the larger formats had a fuller texture and deeper complexity, as showcased by the three vintage magnums taking the podium spots as the highest rated tipples of the evening. The conclusion: if you want to experience the best of Krug, you need to be drinking it from a magnum!

Private Tour and Tasting at The House of Krug.

a tour of the house of krug.

Krug is one of the most prestigious houses in the champagne region in France. To be able to visit and do a private tour and tasting at The House of Krug is truly exceptional. Joseph Krug established the House of Krug in 1843 to create the very best champagne. Krug is based in Reims the main city in the champagne region in France.

AD | I have been compensated, or could be compensated, if you click on a link in this post via a cash payment, gift or something else of value for writing this post. See our full disclosure policy and privacy policy for more details.

If you get the chance to tour the House of Krug you will be extremely lucky and honoured to do so since Krug no longer actually gives private tours to the general public. However we visited the Krug cellars during our stay at  L’Assiette Champenoise where they offer speciality Krug champagne weekend packages .

A visit to the House of Krug in the heart of the Champagne region

Our visit was very special from the word go, Starting in the House where Krug began in the heart of champagne. The beautiful building with the oak barrels lining the entrance were spectacular in itself.

Krug Id Krug champagne tour tasting

The Lounge of Krug

Joseph Krug wrote all of his tasting notes in a cherry red notebook passing on all of his knowledge to his son Paul. He experimented with building a reserve of wines from grapes grown in different plots to blend exceptional wines.

Krug Id Krug champagne tour tasting

Joseph wrote in his book ” A good house should only create two champagnes of the same quality” , champagne no 1 to be the fullest expression of champagne every single year, and. Champagne no 2, the expression of the circumstances of a particular year captured by Krug, and created only in the years as Krug vintage.

We know this today as Krug Vintage.

The Krug Champagne

Today the house offers seven different Krug champagnes;

  • Krug grande cuvée
  • The Krug vintage
  • Krug collection
  • Two clos du mesnil .

A walled vinyard ‘the clos du mesnil’ is where the grapes are grown in a protected area closed off from external elements such as wind. It also has the perfect soil. This soil (or terroir as it is called in French) creates an exceptional flavour. With the quality Soil and growing position you can create exceptional wine such as those created at Krug.

Krug have two of these such areas and grow grapes that are used to produce two champagnes. The Krug Clos Mesnil Champagne and the Clos D’ambonnay which produces the Krug Clos D’ambonnay Champagne.

Champagne tasting at The house of Krug

We sampled three champagnes on our tasting at Krug;

  • A Krug Grand Cuvée
  • Krug Vintage 2003
  • Krug Vintage 2000

All three champagnes were exceptional and came with their own Krug ID.

Krug Id Krug champagne tour tasting

Krug Grand Cuvée

Krug Grande Cuvée is a blend of over 120 wines coming from ten or more different previous vintages. Some of the vintages used to make this champagne are up to fifteen years old in age. There are three grape varieties in the Krug Grand Cuvée they are the;

  •  Pinot Meunier.

These all come from from numerous Grand Cru vineyards in the champagne region.

Krug Vintage Champagne

Krug Vintage is, according to the House;

“not the selection of the best wines of a particular year, but rather the expression of that year according to Krug”.

Therefore Krug Vintage is composed only of wines from one a single year. The Krug Vintage champagne matures in Krug’s cellars for at least ten years before it is released for sale.

Krug champagne tour corks

On our visit we were told all about the “Krug ID “which tells the unique story of each individual bottle of champagne.

Each bottle of Krug has its own Krug ID number on the back of the bottle. Krug has divised an App where you can learn about each individual bottle of Krug. Once you put the Krug ID information in to the Krug app it will tell you the story of your individual bottle. You will be able to find out the age of the reserve wine’s used to make the champagne as well as when it was corked and the date it left the cellar.

Accompanying this information you will find tasting notes on the wine as well as information on food pairing and even music that suits the mood of your champagne.

What is in the cellars of the house of Krug?

Once we had finished our tasting, we took a tour of the house. First off was the stunning cellars where even the smell is amazing, the cool dark spaces emulates such History and an excitement much like their champagne..

Champagne is stored to mature in wooden riddling racks. These riddlers allow for just a quarter turn at a time for each bottle to allow the sediment to settle in to the neck of the bottle.

Seeing the stunning vintages locked behind gates was amazing. All sitting and waiting for that special event.

Next was a tour around the reserve wines in they’re huge aluminium vats. Here you will find the house’s library of 150 reserve wines. These wines are to be used in the blend of a future Krug Grande Cuvée and Krug Rosé.

The pristine clean rooms are a stark contrast to that of the cellars.

Krug uses small 205-litre oak casks tailor-made from trees that are more than two centuries old in the forests of Hautes Futaies in Central France. These Barrels are only used for approximately 40 years.

During the summer preceding the harvest, casks are regularly watered to humidify the wood. The oak casks were a beautiful sight to see filling up the courtyard of the House of Krug. The water leaves stunning reflections on their lids of the surrounding house.

What a fabulous opportunity! Krug is by far my favorite champagne. Do you have advice on obtaining a tour? I will traveling to France in JuneJuky of this year and am very keen on touring the Krug winery. However, Inhave heard that it’s difficult to get a tour. I did an internet search on Krug tours and came across your blog. Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Andrea, thank you for your visit. We visited Krug as part of a offer with a hotel and meal package at https://www.assiettechampenoise.com/en/hotel/#krug it is quite expensive. However you may be able to get in if you use someone who arranges tours for different champagne houses. I can find the contact for the man we use. I will be doing more Champagne posts soon on other champagnes in the area soon.

Merci pour cet article

What a wonderful trip, I love champagne and will definitely stop by when I am in next in the area. Thanks for sharing.

7 Wineries You Will Fall In Love With In Idaho’s Lewis-Clark Valley

krug tour and tasting

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • Food and Drink
  • United States
  • Wine Regions

Idaho is just being discovered as a center of wine growing, but already the fairly new Lewis-Clark Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) has been highly praised by the wine press. This is an emerging destination for winemaking and combines the best of all worlds. Dedicated winemakers have sought out this region for its unique terrain and weather that allows a slow ripening season, adequate water, and many sunny days.

Several wineries have been singled out for excellence, including Northwest Wine Press ’ 2020 Pacific Northwest Winery of the Year, Clearwater Canyon Cellars, and Idaho’s Winery of the Year, Colter’s Creek. Lewis-Clark Valley sits on the border between Washington and Idaho at the base of Idaho’s agricultural palouses (land) and Washington’s high desert. Here they grow Bordeaux and Rhone varietals.

Lewiston, Idaho , and Clarkston, Washington , face each other across the Snake River and a jet boat up Hell’s Canyon is a must when visiting. These industrial towns are fairly straightforward and lodging is your typical chain hotels like Hampton Inn and Best Western, but there are quaint river lodges like Boggan’s Oasis and the Clearwater River Casino & Lodge.

A worthy side trip when visiting the Lewis-Clark Valley is about 45 minutes away to the town of Moscow, Idaho . Pronounced “Moss-coe,” this historical small town is known as the site of the University of Idaho and a farmer’s market that can attract over 100,000 visitors on weekends. Elevated dining, great wines and culture abound in this sophisticated hamlet. I was a guest of the region right before the pandemic and cannot wait to get back to the hospitality and rich dimensions of the State of Idaho.

1. Colter’s Creek Winery

Idaho’s 2019 Winery of the Year makes wine from only Lewis-Clark Valley and Snake River Valley AVAs fruit, which means it stays hyper-local in Idaho. The good thing is that you can try Colter’s Creek both at its hip tasting room in Moscow and at its tasting room and restaurant in the town of Juliaetta, Idaho. It also has vineyards and a winery where a tour and tasting may be arranged.

In 2007, early in the recognition of Idaho wines, Colter’s Creek owners Mike Pearson and Melissa Sanborn combined their chemistry and engineering backgrounds with a love of wine and the earth and found an abandoned vineyard in Juliaetta nestled between the Potlatch and Clearwater rivers. They named the winery after an early settler named John Colter and today produce a variety of wines that truly encompass the gambit of taste and style.

Both a chardonnay and chardonnay-viognier are in the lineup along with a variety of rieslings, a perfect food-pairing wine experiencing a renaissance in popularity. Red and white blends are good for everyday drinking, or try Spanish grape varieties like tempranillo and the rocinante blend, Italian grapes like Sangiovese, and French favorites syrah and the grenache, syrah, Mourvedre blend in Arrow Rim Red. The restaurant in Juliaetta allows visitors to try wines paired with foods reflective of the region.

Colter’s Creek prides itself on sustainability in vineyard, water and waste management as well as in the tasting room environments themselves.

2. Clearwater Canyon Cellars

Coco Umiker is the ebullient winemaker at Clearwater Canyon and her enthusiasm is infectious. With a doctorate degree in wine microbiology, she and a vineyard manager and soil scientist create wines with little interference that are long on flavor.

Since 2016, Clearwater Canyon’s tasting room has been on the family’s Idaho Century Farm in the Lewiston orchards. The room features a cozy and comfortable ambiance and is a far cry from the four barrels it crafted in a storage room from 2004-2007.

The energy exhibited here is worth a visit and the wines are solid and well made, even creative. Definitely a priority stop to make in the valley for the fun, frivolity, and history of this solid winery.

Man working in the Basalt Cellars vineyard. Lewis-Clark Valley, Idaho.

3. Basalt Cellars

One of the original leaders in the Lewis-Clark Valley since 2003, and renowned since the winery’s 2004 merlot won double gold medals in the Tri-Cities Wine Competition. It sits on the Washington state side of the Lewis-Clark Valley and sources grapes from vineyards in the best growing regions of the state. An early pioneer in the region, Basalt Cellars secured long-term contracts with well-known vineyards like Bacchus, Weinbau, and Willard to assure quality wines as the winery became known.

Basalt considers itself a maker of ultra-premium wines and ones it feels will age well. This means the grape sources and winemaking have to be extraordinary, with only the finest techniques and all-French barrels for 18-30 months aging.

French varieties take center focus at Basalt and Bordeaux-origin grapes like cabernet Franc, merlot, and malbec are excellent as are the Bordeaux blends. Sauvignon blanc sells out quickly as does the viognier. From the Rhone region, try syrah and several GSMs (grenache, syrah, and mourvedre) which have deep fan followings. A cool tasting room with very knowledgeable representatives makes a Basalt visit desirable in the Lewis-Clark Valley.

The Idaho Winery of the Year in 2021 says a lot about this unassuming producer. In a storefront in Lewiston, hang with the winemaker/owners of Vine 46 and enjoy an array of interesting and affordable wines that express grapes that grow well in the region.

Carmenere, tempranillo and GMT (grenache, mourvedre and tempranillo blend) are something new for most wine drinkers and deliver spicy red fruit flavors — a perfect complement to your summer grilling. On the white side, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, and rosé assure there is something for everyone. I have found that reds age well and look for a lot of great things in the future from Vine 46. The charming area of Lewiston around Vine 46 is an added bonus.

Outdoor seating area at Lindsay Creek Vineyards, Lewis-Clark Valley, Idaho.

5. Lindsay Creek Vineyards

Lindsay Creek is an expansive, fun and happening winery that makes tasting not only delicious but entertaining. Live music, event areas and plenty to do means a visit here is never boring. And the wines are fantastic.

Fourth generation grain farmers and brothers Art and Doug Mcintosh haven’t forgotten their roots. In fact, you can see grain fields surrounding the winery and small lot grains like oats and wheat are sold in the retail shop, which is another huge reason for home bakers and cooks to visit. The brothers and their wives love traveling to wine regions and in 2007, decided to try maximizing the lush palouse soils left from centuries-ago Missoula floods into wine grape crops, starting with what they call “a mere 150 sticks.”

Heading back to school for winemaking and viticulture has paid off for the brothers and their Bordeaux and Rhone varieties. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and malbec make up the majority of reds along with a rosé and riesling. All of the wines are incredibly affordable ($16 riesling!) so make Lindsay Creek at the end of a fun day of tasting and listen to some music while watching the sun lower over the palouse.

6. Jovinea Cellars

The couple behind Jovinea , Michael and Lisa Grigg, moved to Lewis-Clark Valley with the intention of building a winery and, of course, making wine. It would be 8 years until they got into operation and now source fruit from esteemed vineyards in both Idaho and Washington while planting their estate vineyard near the production facility they built in Lenore, Idaho.

Hoping it doesn’t take another 8 years of starts and stops, triumphs and adversity, to get the vineyard online, Jovinea has opened a tasting room in downtown Lewiston, which has become a small center of so-called urban wineries. In Lewiston, lunching in a small restaurant and sampling wines from the handful of local wineries with tasting rooms in town is a perfect way to spend a day in the area. Jovinea makes some fairly rare varieties so a good place to try your first Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Montepulciano, Dolcetto, and Roussanne, grapes originating in Italy and Portugal is here.

Scenic view at Rivaura Estate Vineyards in the Lewis-Clark Valley in Idaho.

7. Rivaura Estate Vineyards

The family behind Rivaura has a long history of farming along the banks of the Clearwater River in Lewis-Clark Valley and the latest generation has embarked on winemaking under the name Rivaura, meaning “river.”

Ron Hewett, Sr., along with sons Ron, Jr., and Reece Hewett, planted Rhone and Bordeaux varietals and now make ultra premium viognier, syrah, grenache, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot. The latest generation of Hewetts, Lance and Vince Hewett, returned to the family business after a time in the working world.

Rivaura’s tasting room is located on the vineyards near Juliaetta, Idaho, with sweeping views of rolling vineyards.

After getting to know Lewis-Clark Valley, travel south to the urban wineries of Boise and the Snake River Valley AVA around the Caldwell area.

A COLLECTIVE CREATIVE MUSICAL JOURNEY

“ Music is a universal language that speaks to us all. You need not be an expert to be moved by a song, just as no prior knowledge is required to enjoy a glass of Krug Champagne.” — Julie Cavil, Krug Cellar Master

Julie Cavil

A MUSICAL APPROACH TO CHAMPAGNE CREATION

Music is a natural analogy to describe craftsmanship at Krug, guided by founder Joseph Krug’s unique principle of individuality. This concept relates to the art of isolating each plot’s wine, like an individual musician, to identify with precision its unique melody. Only then can Krug Cellar Master Julie Cavil, like a conductor, audition them to determine who will together play in harmony. Every year, her mission is to re-create both the dream of Joseph Krug to craft the most generous expression of Champagne, regardless of climate variation – Krug Grande Cuvée – and the vision of the fifth generation of the Krug family to create a bold and unexpected Krug Rosé composition. Relying on her intimate knowledge of these individualities, she chooses those who will harmoniously perform together the new Editions of those two cuvées: Krug Grande Cuvée, The Symphony of Champagne by the Full Orchestra, and Krug Rosé, the virtuoso balance between substance and finesse by the Chamber Orchestra.

Krug Lover artist collective

A COLLECTIVE OF KRUG LOVER ARTISTS

The House of Krug has long understood the influence of sound on taste perception, applying the notion of food pairing to music. In a constant pursuit to enhance the experience of its Champagnes, Krug continues to foster creative encounters, today presenting its first multi-hand music pairings. Inspired by the new Éditions of Krug Grande Cuvée and Krug Rosé, a collective of five Krug Lovers have translated their tasting sensations of these Champagnes into two collaborative musical compositions to complement each, opening gateways to new sensations. For the artist collective, the creative musical journey began with a tasting, as Julie Cavil shared with them the stories of Krug Grande Cuvée 171 ème  Édition and Krug Rosé 27 ème  Édition united by a common theme: Joseph Krug’s philosophy.

TWO ORIGINAL KRUG ECHOES INSPIRED BY A COMMON THEME

Krug Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition

Krug Grande Cuvée 171 ème  Édition

The Symphony of Champagne by the Full Orchestra Crafted around the harvest of 2015, the 171st Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée is an assemblage of 131 wines, including 55 older musicians from 11 different years dating back to 2000. After resting seven years in Krug’s cellars, the Full Orchestra is ready to perform the Symphony of Champagne, which has been captured by the Krug Lover artist collective in Joseph’s Theme: Dream Variation .

Krug Rosé 27ème Édition

Krug Rosé 27 ème  Édition

The virtuoso balance between substance and finesse by the Chamber Orchestra For this Édition of Krug Rosé, Cellar Master Julie Cavil blended 38 wines, or musicians, from 9 different years, the oldest from 2005 and the youngest from 2015. Discover the Champagne’s vivacity, amplitude and boldness, with a liberated element of the unexpected, as interpreted by the collective of musicians in the composition, Joseph’s Theme: Freedom Variation .

Meet the Artists

Modern in their musical exploration, the group of artists is composed of Japanese violinist Emiri Miyamoto, Japanese singer and multi-instrumentalist Kazu Makino, British drummer Moses Boyd, American harpist Mary Lattimore, and French composer and electronic music artist Erwan Castex, professionally known as Rone, who brings together the musical blends. Their diversity illustrates the fundamental importance to Krug of community as a catalyst for human connection and the pleasure of embracing fruitful encounters.

Emiri Miyamoto

EMIRI MIYAMOTO

Born in Tokyo, Japan, violinist Emiri Miyamoto spent her childhood in Germany. When she returned to Japan in 1991, she started playing violin not because of the influence of her musician father, but because of a friend who started playing music. At age 14, she won first prize at the German Youth Music Competition in Dusseldorf. After participating in several orchestras including Seiji Ozawa Opera Project and NHK Symphony, Emiri released her debut album smile in 2007. She has performed over 30 songs for films and TV shows and TV commercials.

Emiri Miyamoto

Born Erwan Castex near Paris, Rone’s career in the electronic music scene spans 15 years, with six studio albums on the Parisian label InFiné, numerous collaborations and film soundtracks including Les Olympiades by Jacques Audiard for which he received the Cannes Soundtrack award, and Night Ride in 2021 for which he won the César for best film score. Known for blending talents and always exploring new directions, during the COVID pandemic, he originated the concept album Rone & Friends where singer-songwriter friends enriched tracks that had previously been instrumental. More recently, he has collaborated with the contemporary dance collective (LA)HORDE and presented L(oo)ping , a project in which synthesisers and classical orchestra merge for sold-out concert events.

Rone

KAZU MAKINO

Composer, performer, singer, producer, arranger and painter, Kazu Makino was born in the Kyoto Prefecture in Japan and grew up spending time with her grandmother who taught her about traditional Japanese art and culture, ultimately turning her towards musical instruments. In 1992, she followed American saxophonist John Lurie to New York, USA, where she established her musical identity. In 1993, Makino formed Blonde Redhead at the sonic intersection of her pastoral beginnings and the electric chaos of New York City. The group has released 10 albums to date.

Kazu Makino

A multi-award-winning drummer, producer, composer and former BBC 1Xtra resident, Moses Boyd grew up in south London, and began taking drum lessons at age 13. Influenced by hip hop, the sound of Grime, and British jazz icon Gary Crosby, Moses’s live and studio collaborations have ranged from touring with Sampha and Kelsey Lu, to his recent collaboration with South African Gqom king DJ Lag, featured on Beyonce’s soundtrack for The Lion King . Moses has released acclaimed solo projects though his Exodus record label, produced original scores for Paris fashion shows and is part of the group Binker and Moses.

MARY LATTIMORE

Mary Lattimore is a harpist and composer living in Los Angeles, USA. She released her solo debut, The Withdrawing Room , in 2013 and also composes harp parts for songs and recordings, performing and recording with such great artists as Meg Baird, Thurston Moore, Sharon Van Etten... She composed a score for the silent film Le Révélateur and performed at Iceland’s Norður og niður festival. Meet Your Guide

Clint Hoiland

Clint Hoiland

I wasn’t always interested in wine. After talking with people, I realize that I had the same experience that most have: I bought a couple of wines from the grocery store, and they were terrible! So, I figured I wasn’t a “wine guy.” That changed when my brother had a surprise wedding in Napa Valley in 2002 (that’s a story for another day!) We went to so many incredible wineries and tasted mind-blowing wines. It was like a whole new world was opening in front of my eyes. I was hooked! I began learning everything I could get my hands on about wine and wine history. And, of course, tasting! Figuring out what varietals, and wineries, were my favorite.

My friends and family started asking me for recommendations on wine and asking wine-related questions. Four years ago, I was speaking to one of the local winery owners in their vineyard, and she recommended that I start a wine tour company. Loving the local area, having grown up here, and being a natural storyteller, I began crafting a tour that would be one that I would want to go on. My spouse, two children, and I have traveled the world, and we always take a tour. Having a local talk to you about what you’re seeing, smelling, and tasting makes lifetime memories. I want that for the clients who go on my tour, and what better way to explore the Lewis-Clark Valley, than through wine? It’s the perfect compliment!

I buy wine, not only because I like it, but because I want to hear about where it was grown. Who the winemaker is, and what inspires them. What is the history and culture of the area? When I am having a dinner party, and the conversation tapers off, talking about the wine is a perfect way to get the conversation going again. And what a way to wow your friends! I have established a close relationship with each of the winery owners so that I can provide my guests with special access and treatment that the general public can’t get. I have learned the backstory and the behind-the-scenes information to pull back the curtain. And what a story it is, because each of these wineries continues to receive prestigious awards at competitions.

I am absolutely tickled to have the opportunity to help people discover the amazing Lewis-Clark AVA and all that the Lewis Clark Valley has to offer. I have tailored a tour service that emphasizes those characteristics that I would want if we went on a tour: Excellent service, great wines, and flawless delivery. I know that you will come to love the gateway to the Hells Canyon as much as I do.

Frequently asked questions

I’ve never been wine tasting before. am i going to feel foolish.

Heaven’s no! We’re excited you’re going to be joining us for your first trip. In fact, many people going on the tour have never done a wine tasting, so you’re with friends! An educational component will be provided at the first stop when that is the case (just let your guide know!).

How many people can you accommodate?

A minimum of four is required for the tour to go. However, the maximum amount varies. Six or seven seems to be a magical number. However, for larger groups, I contract with the Wheatland Express.

Also, you may charter the entire van if you choose, regardless if it does not meet the minimum amount.

What should I wear?

This is an easy question: whatever you want! In the summer shorts and skirts/dresses is the norm. In the winter, sweaters and sweatshirts, are prevalent. Jeans are always okay. Some people wear khakis. Every once in a great while you’ll see people in a suit and ties. The bottom line is to dress how you feel comfortable, and you will not feel out of place. However, comfortable shoes are strongly recommended. High heels are strongly discouraged, as we will be often standing and walking, and perhaps frolicking in the vineyard!

What about gratuity?

For the guide, it is completely at your discretion. If you are pleased with the service and effort put forth by your guide, you are most welcome to offer him or her a gratuity. Your thoughtfulness will be greatly appreciated.

If you have a large party, and there is a driver AND a guide, we have already given the driver a gratuity.

If you have chosen to go to Ampersand, gratuity and taxes are already included.

Can I be picked up from a different location?

No problem! Pickup is free from any Lewiston Happy Day restaurant. Pickup is also free from any of our other high-quality hotel partners in Lewiston, which include the Hampton Inn & Suites and the Holiday Inn Express. The Quality Inn & Convention Center will transport guests staying with them for free to a pickup location in Lewiston.

Pickup and return from (and back to) your Lewiston residence, or a non-partner hotel, is a popular option. $10 per residence/hotel, plus $5 per person. If you reside or are staying in Moscow, it is $20 per residence/hotel, plus $5 per person.

If you are not in one of these locations, please just ask for a quote.

What type of vehicle do you use?

A 2017 Ford Transit van, with 11 passenger bucket seats. It is kept impeccably maintained.

Will you accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten sensitivities, and other diet restrictions?

Yes, without additional charge! Just let us know, in advance, so we can custom craft to your needs. Usually, there are a small number of gluten-free snacks that are included in every tour, just in case, someone has forgotten to mention that they have gluten sensitivities.

If we drive in to the designated rally point to meet the tour, won’t we be too intoxicated to drive?

We strongly encourage our guests to enjoy the Lewis Clark Valley and enjoy the amazing restaurants we have to offer. Take your time, enjoy a meal, and savor this time away from stress. In fact, why don’t you stay at our Preferred Partner, the Red Lion Hotel? We can get you a discount, and there are no worries that way. Mention that you are with Twisted Vine Wine Tours, and they will apply the discount, or contact us for more information. Or, there are our partners at the Quality Inn and Convention Center, the Best Western, the Hampton Inn, or the Holiday Inn Express, who have excellent rooms and great staff to take care of your needs during your stay.

Who else might be on the tour?

If you would like a private, chartered tours: none. When the tour is chartered, it is considered to be an exclusive and private tour, and you have paid for all 7 seats on the van, regardless of the number of people. The only people who may go are those who you invite (an interpreter may be included by Twisted Vine Wine Tours, LLC, if needed and as arranged with the Responsible Party, at an additional fee.) However, if you are not on a private charter, that is a part of the fun, to meet new and interesting people while enjoying the Lewis Clark valley’s history and culture.

I really like getting drunk, and having my friends get drunk. This sounds like the place for me!

Yikes! So happy you know how to have a good time, but this tour isn’t for you. We will be more than happy to refer you to one of the limousine or taxi cab companies in the area. Most of our clientele are locals who are looking for a stress-free way to explore their own community, ex-pats who are returning to visit family, those traveling on business who crave something off the beaten path, or tourists who are intrigued by our history.

One of my friends who is going with is always late. Can we start the tour when he shows up?

With 24-hour notice, we can push your tour out to a specific time (depending on venue availability, and if no other tours have been booked for that day). With less than 24 hour notice, the tour guide will arrive promptly, and the clock will start. However, the tour will not board the van until the Responsible Party states that it is time to board. In the case of a late start, the guide will talk to the Responsible Party and ascertain her/his preferences. Additional time above the tour window will be billed at $70/hr. If it is a mixed tour and not just one group, the tour will leave no later than 10 minutes after the scheduled departure time.

Can you go into Washington?

No. Due to licensing requirements, we are unable to cross the border.

I might have to cancel. Are there refunds?

If a total of four people do not sign up, a full refund will be issued. However, after the tour is confirmed with a minimum of four people, there are no refunds. It is not fair to the other three people on the tour to cancel, and the tour will continue as planned.

For the remainder of the tours, that time was booked just for you, and there will be no refunds. If you inform us 72 hours prior to your reservation, we will be happy to reschedule your trip within one year of the original booked date, if space is available. Unfortunately, if the cancellation is less than 72 hours, we will be unable to reschedule your trip, and your tour cost will be forfeited.
