Very easy to purchase and use

Gerald Rito

We have used Hop On Hop Off in many cities. While we enjoyed both the red and blue tours in Naples, we thought more dialogue of the city and sites (more history and descriptions, rather than just music) would have enhanced the tours.

Ease of purchase and ise at the bus.

What to know about naples from our local guides.

What are the top things to do in Naples?

Naples is one of Italy’s most beloved destinations for its rich history, art, culture, and delicious cuisine. Here are some top things to do in Naples:

  • Visit Pompeii , a once-thriving ancient Roman city that was buried under volcanic ash for centuries after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Explore the remarkably well-preserved ruins and learn about life in ancient times.
  • Check out the Naples National Archaeological Museum, home to an impressive collection of artifacts from Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other archaeological sites. It's a great place to deepen your understanding of the region's history.
  • Enjoy picture-perfect views of the Bay of Naples from Castel dell'Ovo, a picturesque medieval castle and one of the oldest standing fortifications in the city.
  • Explore the Naples Cathedral (Duomo di San Gennaro), a stunning building dedicated to the city's patron, St. Januarius. The cathedral houses a vial of the saint's blood that miraculously liquefies during special ceremonies.
  • Wander through the narrow streets of Naples' historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site teeming with beautiful architecture, churches, and local markets like the colorful open-air Pignasecca.
  • Try an authentic Neapolitan pizza in one of the city’s many traditional pizzerias. Naples is the birthplace of this beloved dish, after all!
  • Shop your way through Galleria Umberto I. This stunning 19th-century glass-roofed shopping arcade is a beautiful place to stroll, shop, or enjoy a coffee in one of the elegant cafes.
  • Head to scenic Posillipo Hill for breathtaking views of Naples, the bay, and Mount Vesuvius. It's an excellent spot to capture some memorable photos.
  • Enjoy the local cuisine! Naples is so much more than just pizza, as you’ll learn on our Ultimate Naples Food Tour .

What typical foods should I try in Naples?

Naples is a food lover's paradise, offering a wide array of delicious and unique dishes. And your first order of business when it comes to typical foods in Naples is, without a doubt, pizza.

As the birthplace of pizza, Naples is renowned worldwide for pizza Margherita , made with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, basil, and olive oil. One bite and you’ll immediately understand why it’s a global phenomenon, as it’s so much more than the sum of its simple parts. But Margherita isn’t the only pizza in Naples worth trying. For a quick on-the-go bite, grab a pizza fritta (fried pizza), one of the most popular Neapolitan street foods.

Another street food staple in Naples is the cuoppo , or a paper cone stuffed with all sorts of fried deliciousness. Think everything from arancini (rice balls) to the freshest catch of the day from the nearby Mediterranean.

Of course, this is Italy, so pasta is likely near the top of your list. Try it with the famous local ragù napoletano , a slow-cooked meat and tomato sauce. Or savor it with fresh local seafood in the form of spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams), another regional specialty.

Last but not least, be sure to save room for something sweet! You can’t leave Naples without trying the iconic sfogliatella pastries: crispy, flaky shells typically filled with sweet ricotta cheese and a hint of orange or lemon. Another fantastic option is babà , a rum-soaked sponge cake.

Hungry already? Check out our Ultimate Naples Food Tour , during which we’ll try many of the above typical bites in just one delicious morning. There’s no better (or more delicious) way to explore Naples!

What are the best day trips from Naples?

Naples is a fantastic base for exploring further afield in southern Italy thanks to its convenient transportation options. There are plenty of fantastic options for day trips from Naples, from historical and archaeological wonders to stunning coastal landscapes and even island escapes.

The most popular day trip from Naples is an excursion to Pompeii . Nowhere else in the world can you explore ancient life so thoroughly, wandering through homes, shops, streets, and more that appear frozen in time.

For the adventurous, you can even hike up the infamous Mount Vesuvius and peer into the crater. The views from the top are truly once-in-a-lifetime.

Another excellent option for a day trip is to take a scenic drive along the stunning Amalfi Coast. Take your time popping in and out of picturesque towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the dramatic cliffs lining the way.

While not officially part of the Amalfi Coast, a worthwhile stop nearby is the charming coastal town of Sorrento. Home to stunning views, local limoncello, and a fascinating historic center, it's a great place to wander the narrow streets and soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere.

Finally, consider exploring one of southern Italy’s stunning islands, many of which are accessible by ferry from Naples. Capri is the most popular choice, with its charming old town and awe-inspiring Blue Grotto. For a more off-the-beaten path option, consider checking out Procida or Ischia.

Is Naples safe?

Naples certainly has an edge to it, and its unrepentantly raw, gritty personality makes it one of Italy’s most compelling cities. This less-than-glamorous sheen has unfortunately given it a bit of a bad rap among would-be visitors. However, the truth is that Naples is an incredibly safe, enjoyable city if you follow the same precautions you would in any other bustling metropolitan area.

As is the case in many other large cities, petty crime and pickpocketing are prevalent in Naples. Be aware of your surroundings and keep a close eye on your belongings, especially in crowded tourist areas, public transport, train stations, and busy markets. If possible, try to avoid carrying flashy valuables or large amounts of cash.

Some travelers have qualms about visiting Naples due to its association with the Mafia, and it is true that the Camorra crime organization is active in the city. However, their activities are highly unlikely to harm or affect visitors to the city.

When it comes to booking accommodation, do your research to be sure you choose a safe neighborhood. Luckily, many of the areas closest to Naples’ top attractions fall into that category. Consider the historic center, the Spanish Quarter, or the residential yet vibrant Chiaia and Vomero areas as a home base.

If for nothing else other than peace of mind, be sure to familiarize yourself with emergency numbers in Italy. Call 112 for general emergencies and 113 for police assistance.

How can I get to Pompeii from Naples?

Getting to Pompeii from Naples is easy and inexpensive. There are several different options available—simply choose whichever best suits your schedule and budget.

  • Train : The Circumvesuviana train is the most popular and cost-effective way to get to Pompeii from Naples, departing regularly from Piazza Garibaldi Station. The train journey takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the Pompeii Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station.
  • Bus : Several bus companies operate services from Naples to Pompeii. You can catch a bus from Naples' main bus terminal, Piazza Garibaldi. The journey usually takes around 40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
  • Private Transfer : For a more comfortable and convenient option, you can arrange a private transfer or hire a taxi to take you directly from Naples to Pompeii. If it’s in your budget, this option allows you to have more control over your sightseeing schedule.
  • Car Rental : If you're comfortable driving in Italy, you can rent a car in Naples and drive to Pompeii. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, but keep in mind that parking near the archaeological site can be limited.

When is the best time to visit Naples?

You can have an enjoyable experience in Naples no matter when you visit. Here's a breakdown of what to expect throughout the year:

  • Spring (March to May) is a wonderful time to visit Naples, with mild and pleasant weather and temperatures ranging from 15–25°C (59–77°F). The city starts to come alive with blooming flowers, and it's a great time for sightseeing and exploring the historic sites. The tourist crowds are not as overwhelming as in the peak summer season.
  • Summer (June to August) is peak tourist season in Naples. The weather is hot and can get quite humid, with temperatures ranging from 25–30°C (77–86°F) and sometimes even higher. It's a popular time for beachgoers and other tourists, so be prepared for larger crowds, higher accommodation prices, and longer lines at popular attractions. That said, you can’t beat summer if you’d like to combine your time in Naples with a trip to the Amalfi Coast or Capri.
  • Fall (September to November) offers pleasant weather, with temperatures ranging from 18–25°C (64–77°F). The summer crowds start to thin out, making it a more relaxed time to explore Naples and its surroundings. September is also the harvest season, offering opportunities to taste local wines and culinary specialties and therefore making it an especially great option for foodies.
  • Winter (December to February) is Naples’ off-season. The weather is cooler, with temperatures averaging between 8–15°C (46–59°F). While it's not as cold as northern European cities and snow is rare, you might encounter some rain. That said, winter is a great time to enjoy lower accommodation prices and fewer crowds, along with the beautiful decorations that adorn the city during the Christmas season.

Best self-guided Naples walking tour itinerary

We started our Naples walking tour at the National Archaeological Museum and ended it at Piazza del Plebiscito, the most happening square in Naples.

Of course, we got some food first to prepare for the long day ahead. We had some coffee and desserts at the Leopoldo Cafebar right next to the Archaeological Museum. Trust me, their desserts are delicious especially the babas. They have several branches across the city but this branch near the museum serves gluten-free options too.

I have an interactive map at the end of the walking tour itinerary which provides you complete directions to all the attractions that we saw on our excursion. Just click on it to open it in Google Maps and gain access to the directions.

Archaeological Museum – 1st stop on Naples walking tour itinerary

Frescoes representing Battle of Alexander against Darius at Naples Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum, also known as MANN, is a must see on any visit to Naples. It is one of the best museums in all of Europe and a treasure house of ancient artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as medieval ones from the Farnese and Bourbon collections.

The building dates back to the 16th century. First, it was used as army barracks. Then, it became a university. It was transformed into a museum only in 1777.

Highlights of the Naples Archaeological Museum include the Farnese Hercules, a fresco depicting the Battle of Alexander & Darius (pictured above), the Bronze Runners, and the Secret Cabinet. The Secret Cabinet, much like the Lupanar in nearby Pompeii, is full of erotic displays from the ancient Roman towns. The museum’s Magna Grecia collection is also a must-see.

I have to warn you that exploring the MANN in detail can take you a minimum of 2-3 hours. If you don’t have that kind of time during your walking tour, I recommend you come back later or see only the highlights mentioned above.

  • MANN is open Wednesday – Monday, 9:00am – 7:30pm. Some collections may have different opening hours. Check on official website here before you visit.
  • Book your entrance ticket for MANN here .
  • Reserve your private guided tour of MANN here .

Veiled Christ at Sansevero Chapel Museum

From the Archaeological Museum, head to the Chapel Museum of Sansevero via Via Santa Maria di Constantinopoli. The chapel is a 10 min walk from the museum.

The Chapel Museum of Sansevero is a 16th-century church that is home to the renowned sculpture of the Veiled Christ.

The Veiled Christ is a remarkable marble sculpture that shows the dead Christ covered with a thin veil. Giuseppe Sanmartino created the entire thing out of marble but it seems so lifelike. You can literally feel the pain of Christ from within the veil and see the throbbing pulse on his forehead and body. Honestly, the Veiled Christ was unlike any other sculpture I had ever seen earlier.

  • Sansevero Chapel Museum is open Wednesday – Monday, 9:00am – 7:00pm. Check for updated hours on official website here .
  • You can get your entrance tickets at the museum. Or join this guided walking tour that includes entry to the Veiled Christ chapel.

Napoli Sotteranea or Underground Naples

Underground cisterns in Naples

Next, we walked to Napoli Sotteranea, located on Via dei Tribunali. Napoli Sotteranea is the entrance to the underground city of Naples. You can take guided tours here to explore the subterranean city. A guided tour lasts around 2 hours. So, plan for it if you wish to do it on the same day as your Naples city walk.

We did not do it on the same day, rather came back to it on Day 2 in Naples. I have an entire post on how to explore Naples’ underground city . In fact, there are 5+ amazing tours of underground Naples and some of them take you through real hidden gems. Check them all here .

It is fascinating to explore underground Naples that is home more than 2500 years of history. From ancient Roman markets and burial sites to a theater where Emperor Nero himself performed, subterranean Naples holds many secrets.

  • Napoli Sotteranea is open from 10:00am – 6:00pm.
  • Tours happen in English and Italian. You can book your guided tour of Naples Underground here .

Naples Cathedral

Ceiling at Naples Cathedral

The next stop on our Naples walking tour was the stunning Naples Cathedral or the Duomo which is just a couple of minutes away from the Sotteranea.

Known as the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta or the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, this beautiful Gothic church was built in the early 14th century and houses the relics of Saint Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples. It is believed that the blood of the saint (stored in a vial here) liquifies during certain festivals. Now, that’s a real interesting fact about Naples, isn’t it?

The Royal Chapel of San Gennaro dates back to the 17th century and displays beautiful Baroque style. I loved the interiors of the cathedral, especially the dome that is exquisitely decorated. There is a museum called the Treasure of San Gennaro that houses several religious relics such as bronze busts, silver and gold jewelry.

  • Naples Cathedral and the Treasure of San Gennaro are open from 9:30am – 6:30pm, every day.

Spaccanapoli

Spaccanapoli in Naples

After marveling at the treasures of the Naples Cathedral, we walked to Spaccanapoli via Via dei Tribunali. Spaccanapoli is one of the most important streets that runs through the center of Naples’ Historic Center.

In the interactive map that I have provided below , you can see Spaccanapoli as a point but honestly, it is actually a group of streets that takes you through the heart of the city. Historically, the Spaccanapoli has connected the Duomo or the Naples Cathedral with the Gesu Nuovo.

You’ll pass a number of Baroque and Renaissance buildings while walking through the Spaccanapoli including the Venice Palace, the Church of San Domenico Maggiore, and the Santa Chiara monuments. You’ll also find hundreds of quaint Napoli shops selling everything from fridge magnets to packets of colorful pasta. In case you are planning to do some souvenir shopping in Italy, the Spaccanapoli is just the perfect place for it .

If you are hungry, as you will be after so much walking around, you’ll find a number of pizzerias here to dig into some authentic Neapolitan pizza . A couple of good places to try pizza are the San Gennaro Pizzeria and Pizzeria Vesi .

Church of Gesu Nuovo

As we walked ahead on the Spaccanapoli, we reached the Church of Gesu Nuovo which was the next stop on our Naples Walking Tour.

Chiesa del Gesu Nuovo or the Church of New Jesus is an interesting religious building in Naples. The outer facade is sombre with geometric patterns and hundreds of small pyramids covering the entire wall. This design is unique and especially remarkable because you won’t see this anywhere else in Southern Italy .

The interior, on the other hand, is opulently decorated and highly detailed. The nave and the vaulted ceilings are full of beautiful frescoes depicting stories from the Bible.

Originally, the church was built as a palace in 1470. It changed hands several times and was finally taken over by Jesuits in the 20th century. Today, it is one of Naples most important churches.

  • The Church of Gesu Nuovo is open from 7am – 8pm everyday, with a break from 1-4pm in between.
  • It is free to enter the church.

Castel Nuovo

Castle Nuovo in Naples

After finishing our visit to the Church of Gesu Nuovo, we headed straight to Castel Nuovo or the New Castle. Castel Nuovo is a Medieval Renaissance style fortress built in the 13th century. Located right by the port, the castle provides some stunning views of the city and the Naples Bay.

Inside the castle, you can admire the beautiful frescoes of the Palatine Chapel and check out a collection of Naples art from the 17th – 20th centuries. In the Armory Hall, you’ll find Roman ruins under the glass floor.

  • Castel Nuovo is open from 9:00am – 5:00pm, Monday – Saturday.

Galleria Umberto I

Naples’ famous shopping complex, Galleria Umberto I is just a few minutes away from Castel Nuovo.

Built in the late 19th century, Galleria Umberto I is an impressive glass-domed shopping arcade built in the Renaissance Revival style. Apart from being a shopping hub, Galleria Umberto I has become something of an iconic photo spot for tourists. It constantly reminded me of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.

Galleria Umberto I in Naples

Teatro di San Carlo

Next up on our walking tour was the San Carlo Theater, the world’s oldest opera house . Yes, Naples has the distinction of being home to Teatro di San Carlo which is the oldest (and continuosly active) opera venue in the world. There’s no way you can leave Naples without visiting this magnificent theater.

Built in 1737, during the Bourbon era, the San Carlo Theater has an opulent auditorium that could once seat 3,000+ people. It has hosted many famous names in the world of music and dance, including Luciano Pavarotti, Carla Fracci, and Igor Stravinsky.

An interesting fact about this landmark is that each of the 184 box seats in the theater have a mirror that points towards the king’s box. It seems that everyone attending a concert here was expected to mirror the king’s reaction!! The sheer vanity!!

  • San Carlo Theater is open from 10:00am – 6:00pm every day.
  • You can buy online tickets on their official website here .

Royal Palace of Naples

Right next to the San Carlo Theater is the Royal Palace of Naples or the Palazzo Reale that dates back to the 17th century.

This imposing landmark was one of the palatial residences of the House of Bourbon and features an exquisite Throne Room, grand royal apartments, an impressive Hall of the Ambassadors, and the Palatine Chapel. The double staircase that leads you to the living apartments is stunning.

  • The Royal Palace of Naples is open from 9:00am – 8:00pm, Thursday – Tuesday. Check for updated opening hours here .
  • Get your online entrance tickets to Palazzo Reale here .

The happening Piazza Plebiscito in Naples Italy

Piazza del Plebiscito – Last stop on Naples walking tour

The last stop on our walking tour of Naples was the happening public square of Naples, Piazza del Plebiscito . Actually, both Royal Palace and San Carlo Theater are located on the piazza but we chose to visit them first and then come back and relax at Naples’ largest square.

Piazza Plebiscito literally translates to the “square of the people”. It is the perfect place to people-watch and soak in the vibes of Old Town Naples. Bordered by the Royal Palace and the Church of San Francesco di Paola, the piazza is also the best place to learn about Naples’ architecture and history.

We wrapped up our long day with some coffee at Gran Caffe Gambrinus , a 19th-century coffee house that has always been the haunt of politicians and intellectuals in Naples. They serve good coffee and desserts but be prepared for the crowds.

Discovering the historic centre of Naples: what to see and where to stay

naples italy city tour

Naples is the city with the largest historic centre in Europe

naples italy city tour

Naples is one of the oldest cities in Europe and with the largest historical city centre . Here you can find all the traces of its cultural influences, crossing and telling 27 century oh history.

In 1995, a portion of its historic city centre was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique universal value, which profoundly influenced most of Europe. An incredible stage of art, history and urban expression for almost three millennia.

The true essence of Naples is in Spaccanapoli

naples italy city tour

"Spaccanapoli" is the most characteristic road in the historical city centre of Naples. It goes from the Spanish Quarters to the district of Forcella, cutting in a straight line the city of Naples. If you watch it from San Martino in the highest part of the city, you will understand the why of its name.

In Spaccanapoli, you can find a lot of impressive Neapolitan handicraft shops.  You will discover all the stories, curiosities and anecdotes of Neapolitan tradition and folklore.

A trip in Spaccanapoli is a journey through the thousand-year history of the city, where there are not only the ancient palaces, the churches, but also the legends and the unmistakable smells of Neapolitan cuisine.

Along the route of Spaccanapoli, you will meet beautiful churches and families living in the “bassi”, artists and artisans. But do not be surprised at anything! Spaccanapoli is not a tourist postcard, it is Naples!

Mystery and culture: the San Severo Chapel Museum

naples italy city tour

Hidden in the alleys of the historic centre of the city.  Cappella di San Severo , also called the church of Santa Maria Della Pietà or Pietatella , is one of the most fascinating and mysterious museums in Naples .

Located in the centre of the Chapel, the Cristo Velato (Veiled Christ) is one of the most beautiful and evocative works in the world, whose image has become famous all around the world for the prodigious “weaving” of the marble veil.

In Sansevero Chapel, there are also wonders of virtuosity as “Disinganno” and enigmatic presences as “Macchine Anatomiche”.

Legends and unique tours: the history of Naples Underground

naples italy city tour

The Naples that we see today rests its foundations on an ancient network of as many underground roads. In Underground Naples, we found the tunnels excavated by the Greeks when they began to extract the tuff from the subsoil to strengthen the city walls.

Over the centuries, the underground Naples has been in ferment almost as much as that on the surface. The tunnels below Naples have been used in different ways.

During World War II, the underground Naples was modified to accommodate the population during the bombing. During the war years, about four thousand people populated the underground city, waiting for the war to allow the return to daily life.

According to popular belief, Underground Naples is a place frequented by the funny “Monaciello” (monk): the spirit who inhabited the buildings of Naples; this could find money in the drawers or the jackets hanging at the entrance. But, by chance, the spirit was offended, showing little devotion or claiming not to believe in ghosts, the revenge of the "Monticello" was inevitable.

An obelisk, a church and a view of the Santa Chiara Monastery: Piazza del Gesù Nuovo

naples italy city tour

Piazza del Gesù was born casually when the city was widening westward. It is one of the most important squares of Naples. You reach it, walking along Spaccanapoli. There are three significant monuments in the square: Gesù Nuovo Church, the Immaculate Oblisk and Santa Chiara Monastery.

The church has a typical Neapolitan Baroque architecture, with marble, decorations and paints. According to the legend, the building was built with magic stones , able to attract positive energies. Inside the church, there is San Giovanni Bosco Chapel, where on the walls, there are thousands of ex-votos  as signs of gratitude for the miracles.

Also, about the Square's Obelisk,  there are many legends. Watching it during some hours of the day, thanks to a game of lights and shadows, you can glimpse death's image.

The Monastery of St Clare and the cloister with tiles

naples italy city tour

In the beginning, the Santa Chiara Monastery was a Gothic building, then transformed into a Baroque example, till to go back to its origins after the post-war restoration.

It was born by Roberto D'Angiò's willing and, under the Angioinians, was the fulcrum of civil and religious ceremonies. Close to the monastery, there is the famous and beautiful Majolica Cloister  with its pillars completely covered by blue, yellow and green majolicas: colours that perfectly match with their surroundings. The cloister is a proper peace oasis in the chaotic heart of Neaples.

San Domenico Maggiore square in Naples

naples italy city tour

Piazza San Domenico Maggiore stands up in the centre of Naples as a reality unto itself, absolutely alien to the surrounding traffic. Far away by modernity, the square takes the gaze of the beholder.

In its centre, the monumental obelisk built by the Dominicans in 1556 as gratitude for the ending of the plague . Next it, the Basilica in Baroque style.

The square is populated, both on the day and the night, by tourists and youth.

Airone Hotel: a stay in the historical centre of Naples

A precious jewel set among the oldest walls of the city surprising every day its visitors. The rooms   are welcoming, all equipped with safe, free wifi access, writing corner, wardrobe, telephone access for free. Their lovely balconies offer a city view on Via Guglielmo San Felice .

Daniela was superb. She was very accommodating to our schedule and needs. She is well versed about her birth city of Napoli. She is a wonderful tour guide!!!

Daniel was very knowledgeable about her beautiful home town of Napoli. You can tell she loves what she does by sharing her adventures growing up in Napoli. She was very accommodating to our schedule. I would definitely book with Daniela next time around to Napoli.

The view of all the churches. Also, I learned that church maintenance is basically funded by the government. Finally, I learned the importance of figurines and superstition to Neopolitans. (ie, Puchinello)

We really enjoyed our tour with Armondo. He shared interesting history of Naples and he was fun and friendly.

Although you can see the sights on a shore excursion, I’ve included a useful Naples cruise port guide to help you navigate the city independently.

Best Things to Do in a Day in Naples

My return visit to Naples was part of a Western Mediterranean cruise on NCL Epic . As this is an easy and destination-rich itinerary, it is a good choice for the first-time cruiser .

The itinerary started and finished in the Catalan city of Barcelona , giving me a welcome opportunity to check the progress of La Sagrada Família . Other highlights included the honey-hued Palma de Mallorca , Civitavecchia (for Rome) and visiting the marble quarries at Carrara .

Naples was the easiest port of call to explore independently. Its historic city centre is only a ten-minute stroll from the port and as its main attractions are close to one another, it’s very walkable. But, if needed, I’ve included tips for using the metro in Naples later in this article ( here ).

If you are someone who likes to map it out, here’s one that I have prepared. For a live, interactive map, click on this link or on the image.

Visit Castel Nuovo

entrance to nuovo castle in naples with 2 turreted towers

Start your day in Naples at Castel Nuovo . This enormous military castle looms over the harbour and has eccentric round towers. Built by Charles of Anjou in 1279, most of what you see today is the work of the Catalan architect Guillermo Sagrara who was also responsible for the Exchange in Palma de Mallorca .

The castle’s main entrance is an intricately carved 15th-century white marble triumphal arch, tucked between two of its towers. Inside, there are frescoes by Giotto in the Cappella Palatina and a collection of artwork by Neapolitan painters from the 17th to early 20th Centuries.

Address: Via Vittorio Emanuele III

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday: 8:30 am to 6.30 pm. You can choose one of seven timed entrance slots. More information here .

Stop for a coffee in Galleria Umberto I

cream colored baroque building seen through an arch

This light-filled shopping arcade was built at the end of the 19th century as part of a project to rebuild and renovate much of Naples. Crowned with a domed glass and steel roof, and decorated with elegant murals and sculptures, the Galleria Umberto is part of the UNESCO listing of the Historic Centre of Naples as a World Heritage Site.

Admire Piazza del Plebiscito

After languishing as a car park between the 1960s and 1994, this immense and elegant square has been restored to its former splendour.

Piazza del Plebiscito was built from volcanic rock from Vesuvius in the first half of the 19 th  Century. It is named after the 1860 plebiscite that brought Naples into the unified Kingdom of Italy.

sweeping collonaded building on one side of square in naples italy

The square is flanked by two majestic buildings.

Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace), one of four royal residences around Naples used by the Bourbon Kings, occupies its southern edge. Facing the Palazzo Reale, Basilica San Francesco di Paola embraces the piazza with its curving colonnades.

Stroll the streets of the historic centre of Naples

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, the historic centre of Naples ( centro storico ) is a warren of old churches, small shops, cafes, and bars. Naples was founded by Greek settlers in 470 B.C. and has retained the imprint of the successive cultures that occupied the city.

person walking down narrow street with row of scooters

The historic centre is roughly bounded by the waterfront on the south,  Via Toledo  and the Spanish Quarter to its western edge and Via Floria on the northern edge. For tourists, Via Duomo marks its eastern side.

Spaccanapoli , meaning ‘Split Naples’ does exactly that. Lined with grocery barrows and one-of-a-kind shops, and inhabited by arch-Neapolitan characters, this is the heart of old Naples.

Don’t miss Via San Gregorio Armeno , which is tucked between Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali. This charming lane is known across Italy for its artisan shops selling handcrafted pastori , or nativity-scene figurines.

Go underground at Galleria Borbonica

Naples is a city with buried secrets. Tunnels, caves, and catacombs lace their way under the city, and I recommend going underground at least once during your day in Naples.

Galleria Borbonica (Bourbon Gallery or Bourbon Tunnel) has a fascinating history.

It housed immense water tanks in the 1600s and served as an escape for the Bourbon royal family. It was an air-raid shelter during World War II and an impound lot.

A section of the tunnel is a Vespa graveyard, populated with confiscated souped-up scooters that have exceeded the 50km/hour speed limit.

Visit Naples Cathedral

Naples is home to more than 450 churches but the most important is Naples Cathedral. The cathedral is dedicated to San Gennaro, the patron saint of the city, and is variously known as the Duomo di Napoli, Duomo di San Gennaro and the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral.

It was built in the 13th Century on the remains of the ancient temple dedicated to the god Apollo. In the late 17th century it was reworked in flamboyant Baroque fashion with the later addition of a late nineteenth-century Neo-Gothic façade.

With a golden Byzantine mosaic and frescoes galore, the best stuff is on the inside. But most importantly, the cathedral is the home of the skull of San Gennaro and an ampoule   that encloses his blood.

It is said that the saint’s blood liquefies twice a year. If the miracle of liquefaction doesn’t occur, misfortune will strike the town.

Address: Via Duomo, 147

Opening hours : Check here . Usually closed between lunchtime and late afternoon.

Closest metro stations: Metro Line 1 University / Metro Line 2 Cavour

Other churches in Naples

Two other churches worth adding to your one-day Naples itinerary are San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica and San Domenico Maggiore Church. Located in the exact geographical centre of historic Naples, San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica is famous for the remains of an ancient two-storey Greco-Roman market beneath its floors. Visit San Domenico Maggiore Church for its lavishly decorated interior featuring intricate gold details and a dramatic altar.

Get your history fix at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples

Naples National Archaeological Museum (MANN) is one of the great museums of the world.

Starting life as an army barracks in the 16th Century, it was converted into a museum in the 19th Century. This massive museum is spread across four floors and is home to an extensive collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, as well as artefacts from Ancient Egypt.

Visiting MANN is one of the best things to do in Naples if you are planning to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum. Valuable treasures from these two sites are displayed here, giving you greater insight into daily life in Pompeii and Herculaneum .

The museum’s other highlight is the Farnese Collection . This collection of classic sculptures and objects from the villas of ancient Rome is one of the world’s most important Greco-Roman exhibitions.

Address : Piazza Museo, 19

Opening hours: Wednesday to Monday 9 am to 7.30 pm. Closed on Tuesdays.

Closest metro stations: Museo or Cavour, lines 1 and 2

Admission fee: Ticket price applies. Free on the first Sunday of the month and on a few selected dates.

Admire views of Vesuvius with a walk through Santa Lucia

Walk along the Lungomare waterfront in the Santa Lucia district of Naples for views across the Bay of Naples. Mount Vesuvius looms menacingly on the other side of the water.

Visit Castel dell’Ovo

At the end of the Lungomare, on the Borgo Marinaro island, is Naples’ oldest, and most picturesque, castle.

old castle by sea

Castel dell’Ovo was built by the Normans in the 12th century. Prior to that, the site played host to the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, during his exile.

Today, the castle today is used for events and temporary art exhibitions, but you can take a walk around its fortified walls for free.

There is one thing that you must do if you have just one day in Naples. Eat pizza! One of the best reasons to visit Italy is to feast on pizza and Naples is where it all began.

In 1889 King Umberto I and Queen Margherita needed a respite from their relentless diet of French Haute Cuisine. It just goes to show that you can get too much of a good thing.

Amongst the selection presented to the royal couple, the queen preferred the pizza topped with mozzarella, tomatoes and basil (coincidentally, the colours of the Italian flag).

And so Pizza Margherita was born.

a pizza with tomato and cheese

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is reputed to make the best pizza in Naples. This is also where Julia Roberts munched on a slice of pizza in the movie Eat, Pray, Love .

The pizzeria is on Via Cesare Sersale, close to Naples Cathedral and a 20-minute walk from Naples cruise port. Expect to queue.

Guided Tours of Naples

If you don’t feel comfortable exploring Naples on your own or are looking for greater insight into the city’s history, culture and way of life, consider joining an organised walking tour.

I use GetYourGuide to source and book day excursions. Not only does the platform offer an extensive selection of tours from independent operators, but there is also a very generous cancellation policy.

Going Further Afield

Maybe you’ve already visited Naples and want to explore the beauty of the Amalfi Coast or the historic sites of Pompeii or Herculaneum. All of these places are easy day trips from Naples, even if you are a cruise passenger.

As with any onshore activities, always check that you will be able to make it back to the ship in plenty of time. If in doubt, book a shore excursion that guarantees to deposit you back at the port before your ship sails away.

Sorrento was the first place I visited on the Amalfi coast more than 30 years ago. Famous for its lemons and high-pedigree hotels, this laid-back town has been popular with tourists since the Grand Tours of the 19th Century.

This is the place to replenish your supplies of limoncello .

Stop for a coffee or lunch in one of the small cafes Piazza Tasso , Sorrento’s main square. Pick up gifts in the town’s famous small ceramics, lacework and marquetry (woodwork) shops.

But, best of all, take in the dramatic views over the Bay of Naples from Sorrento’s lofty clifftop location.

A ferry will take you across the Bay of Naples to Sorrento in 40 minutes. This service departs multiple times a day during the main travel season that runs from April through October.

Island of Capri

Capri is an enchaining garden of Eden with over 8,000 species of flora tumbling over a sheer chunk of limestone, eroded over time into fantastical forms.

The Blue Grotto (Grotto Azzura) is Capri’s headline act. The shimmering, iridescent blueness of the water in this sea cave is due to the reflection of light on the water in the morning.

Renowned as a playground for Roman Emperors, artists and the Hollywood glitterati, Capri’s jaw-dropping beauty comes at a hefty price. Capri town is awash with designer boutiques and jewellery shops, and the island also prides itself on its fine dining.

To reach Capri from Naples, take a high-speed hydrofoil.

The hydrofoil service operates from the Molo Beverello pier and takes about 40 minutes to get to Capri. You can check the timetable here .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii barely needs an introduction.

Pompeii was once a cosmopolitan resort town inhabited by wealthy Romans. All this ended in 79 A.D when the town was buried under the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius.

Today’s visitors to Pompeii can stroll along the town’s ancient paved streets and view the remains of its lavish villas, elegantly bathhouses, temples and massive 20,000-seater amphitheatre.

I have been to Pompeii twice, once with a guide and once without. From my experience, this is one place where it is worth paying for a guided tour.

Pompeii’s ruins are huge and sometimes confusing with little signage. A map and guidebook are unlikely to cut it here.

Herculaneum

For a different perspective, visit Herculaneum, a few stops along the Circumvesuviana train line towards Naples or Sorrento.

Herculaneum suffered the same fate as Pompeii when Vesuvius erupted. However, its buildings are better preserved than those of its neighbour, many having their upper storey intact.

The tragedy of Herculaneum feels immediate.

The town’s boathouses are home to the skeletons of hundreds of people sheltering from the eruption. Whilst waiting for a boat to rescue them, their flesh was vaporised by an intense wave of hot gas, leaving only their charred bones.

human skull and bones

Along with Pompeii, Herculaneum is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take the Circumvesuviana or Campania Express to Ercolano Scavi, which is in the centre of town. The journey time is 10–20 minutes.

Can you visit Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum in one day?

Whilst this should be possible on a typical cruise ship schedule, it will be a long day and could feel overwhelming. Pompeii demands at least a half-day and you will need a minimum of two hours to visit Herculaneum

Getting Around Naples

Naples’ historic centre is an easy 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. Once you leave the cruise terminal, follow the passenger walkway that will take you to the Piazza del Plebiscito in the heart of the historic city centre.

Walking is the easiest way to explore Naples.

If you want to visit places that are further out or reach the city’s main railway station, your best option is line 1 of the city’s metro system , also known as the “Art Line” thanks to the works of art decorating its stops.

A single ticket is valid for 90 minutes. Day tickets offering unlimited journeys are also available.

Municipio is the closest metro station to the cruise terminal.

Naples also has a hop-on-hop-off (HOHO) bus. There is a bus stop outside the terminal, adjacent to Castel Nuovo that you’ll spot upon exiting the terminal building.

The HOHO bus follows two different routes stopping at principal sights and attractions in Naples. In the summer months, a third route takes you to the San Martino Monastery. An audio commentary is included.

Whilst this is a hassle-free way of getting around Naples, the city’s traffic is legendary and there’s every chance you will spend a chunk of your time in congested streets.

Getting To and From Naples Cruise Port

From Porta Nolana

The closest railway station to Naples cruise port is Porta Nolana , a 30-minute walk northeast. If you prefer, you can take metro line 1 from Colombo station near the marina to Garibaldi – Circumvesuviana.

Otherwise, the Naples Alibus Airport Shuttle leaves from outside Stazione Marittima and stops outside Napoli Centrale station. From here, it’s a ten-minute walk to Porta Nolana.

From Garibaldi station

Alternatively, Garibaldi station, on the lower level of Naples’ main railway station, is just over two miles from the cruise terminal. To reach Garibaldi station by public transport, take the metro line 1 from Municipio station to Piazza Garibaldi, or the Naples Alibus Airport Shuttle from the port.

Circumvesuviana train service

From Naples Garibaldi or Porta Nolana, the private Circumvesuviana train service connects the city to Sorrento via Pompeii and Herculaneum, with countless stops along the way. I recommend starting your journey at Porta Nolana station as this is the terminus and you stand a better chance of getting a seat.

Fares are low and services are frequent. But as this is predominantly a commuter line, it can get crowded. Timetable here .

Campania Express

The  Campania Express is a faster and more comfortable alternative to the Circumvesuviana train. However, it is a more expensive and less frequent service that runs between April and October only.

Although these trains run on the same route as the Circumvesuviana, they stop only at popular tourist sites, including Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento.  Again, trains depart Naples from Napoli Porta Nolana and Garibaldi stations.

By ferry and hydrofoil

As Naples Cruise Terminal is located next to its ferry dock, it’s easy to jump on a boat across the Bay of Naples.

Is Naples Safe for Solo Cruisers?

Keeping safe is a priority for solo travellers , especially for first-time solo travellers . Over the years, Naples has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Filthy, crime-ridden, garbage-strewn; you name it, it’s been called it. And yes; petty crime is a problem in Naples, but the same can be said for many major cities. This is not a reason for avoiding a destination; you just need to keep your wits about you. Remain vigilant, keep your belongings close to you and use your hotel or cabin safe to store valuables.

Thank you for reading my Naples cruise port guide

I hope that it helps you have the best day in Naples. Even as a repeat visitor, I found that there were so many things to do that the main challenge was narrowing down the choices.

Great site but may not support your language

Based upon our favorite guide book, we chose this underground experience which takes you down to the most ancient of the underground cisterns and aqueducts. But be advised, at least at this time of the year, all tours are in Italian. There is an online page you can use to get a brief English audio description at each stop. But it is just that - brief. It wouldn’t even load on one of our phones - though we were able to share earbuds Summary: system was fascinating. Access to the cisterns was good. History was interesting. But they need a better solution for multiple languages. You need to stick with the group, so you are listening to a short paragraph and the group is listening to a short lecture. Meanwhile you are waiting. There are also two videos that you stand up and watch - one of which needs translations. I’ve used headsets all over the world, and even a booklet in rural Japan that solved this problem better. Had this been on our own pace we’d have saved 30 minutes.

This tour sounded fascinating to me, and I did not notice anything on the website indicating that it was only available in Italian. I found this out when I arrived. The guide was Mariano, and he showed me how to access a website with an audio guide in English (though simplified, and not as extensive as what he would say on the tour). Unfortunately, it did not work while we were underground. I can understand some Italian, but I know I missed a lot of the details. They clearly did a lot of work to prepare the tour area underground, and I am glad I at least saw it even if I didn't understand much. Mariano told me they are working on getting English translations, and he also offered to send me a file with more information. So they clearly are trying to make the tour accessible to more visitors.

Tours MUST be in a language you understand. If, like me, you are English AVOID AVOID AVOID! That’s how many times I showed up for the English tour, was told to wait and wait and wasted a half day waiting. Their guide won’t guide or isn’t allowed to guide small groups. She came, she scowled, she departed. It’s “no tour for YOU” barked the tour fascist.

Visiting from London with my girlfriend, was recommended this by group of friends. Great knowledgable staff very good service, atmosphere good quality/ price. Highly recommend anyone visiting.

Today we visited LAPIS. We did not know what to expect and received a very nice guided tour. Thank you very much for this great experience!

I walked into this church simply to check out the interior and artwork and discovered there is a subterranean museum. It was a really cool experience! There are no crowds or long lines and I got a private tour. It was really informative and the guide was great! It’s really shocking when you first see the long, long staircase going so far down below the earth just beneath the church. There’s a great exhibition of actual artifacts found in the tunnels and in the back of the museum exhibit hall there’s a wall from a Roman house and some Greek stone foundations beneath the Roman stones. You also have a virtual tour and a 10 minute film you can watch about the discovery of the cave/tunnels. If you bring your ticket from the San Severo museum or a coupon from the MANN you can get a discounted admission. You can see everything in about 40 minutes.

This tour requires an elevated level of fitness.

Welcome to an extraordinary springtime journey through the rich ancient history, breathtaking volcanic landscapes, and legendary food and wine culture of southern Italy and Sicily. Travel and hike with archaeologist Cris Corrado and local guides among active and dormant volcanoes, delight in picturesque landscapes and sea views, and explore fascinating archaeological sites. Italy is home to mainland Europe’s only active volcanoes—Mount Vesuvius, Stromboli, and Mount Etna—and on this tour you will hike on all three of them. On this well-paced tour you will rest at distinctive, four-star hotels, spending four nights in Naples, one on a comfortable ferry from Naples to Lipari, three on the Aeolian island of Panarea, and two in the heart of Mount Etna Park, Sicily. An expert tour manager handles all of the logistics, so you can relax, enjoy, and learn. On all but one of the seven hikes, an extra guide will allow us to split into two groups, so that you may choose either a longer or shorter excursion. Highlights include:

  • Pompeii, one of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological sites, destroyed (but also preserved!) by the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79
  • Hiking the trail of Vesuvius National Park to the crater, with amazing views over the whole Gulf of Naples
  • A breathtaking hike along the “Path of the Gods,” on the Sorrento Peninsula, with views of the Tyrrhenian Sea
  • A ferry ride to the fabled island of Capri to hike along fragrant trails to Roman Emperor Tiberius’ Villa Jovis
  • A visit to the Naples Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the world’s finest collections of Greco-Roman art and artifacts

  • A hike up Mt. Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, with panoramic views of Sicily’s eastern coast

Monday, May 12: Arrive in Naples | Transfer to hotel | Welcome dinner Upon arrival at Naples-Capodichino International Airport (NAP), you will be met and transferred to our hotel. Take some time to relax before gathering for an introductory lecture and welcome reception at the hotel followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Tuesday, May 13: Pompeii | Mt. Vesuvius winery visit | Hiking Mt. Vesuvius | Naples 3-hour, 3-mile hike (600 feet up and down) OR 4-hour, 5-mile hike (1,120 feet up and down)

Explore Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one the world’s most fascinating archaeological sites that was both destroyed and preserved by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79. The eruption buried the city under tons of ash, pumice, and lapilli, but excavations have revealed life in a prosperous ancient Roman city. Proceed to a winery at the base of Mt. Vesuvius for a wine tasting lunch, where each course (antipasto and spaghetti, both featuring heirloom Piennolo tomatoes; and pastiera napoletana, a traditional tart with sweetened ricotta, candied fruit, and boiled wheat berries) is paired with a specific local wine. In the afternoon, hike the trail of Vesuvius National Park to the crater from where you can enjoy the majesty of the volcano and views over the whole Gulf of Naples. Return to our hotel in Naples, where dinner is on your own. (B,L)

Wednesday, May 14: Oplontis | Amalfi | Hiking the “Path of the Gods” from Agerola to Positano | Naples 3-hour, 3-mile hike (165 feet up and 860 down) OR 4-hour, 5-mile hike (165 feet up and 1,210 down)

Begin the day with a visit to Villa Poppea (Oplontis), an ancient villa with superb wall paintings that was probably owned by Emperor Nero. Continue to Amalfi, once one of Italy’s four great maritime republics, and visit its stunning 13 th -century Cathedral and Cloister. After lunch at leisure, a short drive takes us to Agerola from where we hike the breathtaking “Path of the Gods.” The panoramic trail is punctuated by insights into local life, passing shepherds’ huts and ancient stone houses carved into the limestone, before descending to colorful Positano. Return to Naples and then gather this evening for dinner at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Thursday, May 15: Hiking on Capri | Villa Jovis | Naples 4-hour, 4-mile hike (1,250 feet up and down) OR 5-hour, 5-mile hike (1,470 feet up and down)

In the morning take a ferry to the fabled island of Capri, the favorite place of Roman Emperor Tiberius. Enjoy a hike on its iconic trails, including a visit to Villa Jovis, the largest and most opulent of Tiberius’ twelve villas on the island. Enjoy a picnic lunch and walk through Mediterranean vegetation, with the scents of holm oak, myrtle, and broom permeating the air, plus amazing views over the Faraglioni (three towering rock formations just off the coast) and the mainland. Hike back to the Old Town and enjoy some time at leisure to explore its famous “Piazzetta.” Return to Naples by ferry and then gather for dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Friday, May 16: Herculaneum | Naples Archaeological Museum | Overnight ferry to Lipari Explore Herculaneum which, like Pompeii, was both destroyed and preserved by the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Excavations have revealed the customs, habits, and art of an ancient holiday resort for wealthy Romans. Among the most important buildings are the theater, the basilica adorned with marble and paintings, the spa with gym, and the House of Argos. Return to Naples, where we enjoy a lunch of the city’s acclaimed pizza followed by a visit to the Naples Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the world’s finest collections of Greco-Roman art and artifacts. The Farnese Collection includes celebrated bronze and marble statues, as well as ancient paintings and important artifacts from Herculaneum and Pompeii. This evening, embark the overnight ferry to Lipari. Dinner is on your own in the ferry cafeteria. Overnight aboard a Siremar Ferry. (B,L)

Saturday, May 17: Lipari: Archaeological Museum | Hiking Vulcano | Panarea 2-hour, 3-mile hike (1,650 feet up and down)

Disembark the ferry at Lipari and enjoy breakfast at a local café. Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago, comprising seven islands off the coast of Sicily: Lipari, Panarea, Vulcano, Stromboli, Salina, Alicudi, and Filicudi. They were all created by the still-active volcanoes of Stromboli and Vulcano, and today they are a UNESCO World Heritage (natural) Site. We visit the Archaeological Museum, tucked inside Lipari Castle, which stands out on the island’s eastern bay. After lunch at leisure, we take a private boat to Vulcano that, according to Greek mythology, was the home of Hephaestus/Vulcan, the god of fire, metalwork, and the fine arts. Hike to the top, from where it is possible to observe numerous volcanic phenomena, including smoke clouds, vapor spouts, and sulphuric mud holes known for their therapeutic properties. Continue to Panarea, the only car-free island of the archipelago, and have dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at the 4-star Hotel Lisca Bianca for three nights. (B,D)

Sunday, May 18: Hiking Stromboli | Panarea 4-hour, 5-mile hike (1,310 up and down) OR 6-hour, 9-mile hike (2,950 feet up and down)

Take a private boat to nearby Stromboli, the most active volcano in Europe, which has been erupting for at least 2,000 years at intervals of approximately 15 minutes, with lava flow that runs down into the sea. Enjoy a full-day excursion here, including a picnic lunch. On our way back to Panarea, stop at one of the smallest rock formations to see underwater vapor spouts and swim in hot waters, weather permitting. Gather for dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Monday, May 19: AM at leisure | Salina | Hike to Hauner Winery | Panarea 3-hour, 3-mile hike (900 feet up and down) OR 4-hour, 6-mile hike (2,170 up and 3,150 feet down)

The morning is at leisure to relax at the hotel pool, explore the village on your own, go to the beach, or independently hike the beautiful island . After an independent lunch, we take the ferry to the island of Salina, home to a beautiful, wooded area of ferns ( la Fossa delle Felci ) located on jagged cliffs above the island’s gorgeous beaches. Stop to taste the renowned granita , a local crushed-ice treat with all-natural flavors such as peach, mulberry, almond, and pistachio. Then we set out on a hike ending at Hauner Winery for a tasting of its very special Malvasia delle Lipari wine. Return to Panarea by private boat and enjoy an evening at leisure. (B)

Tuesday, May 20: Milazzo, Sicily | Taormina | Mount Etna Leaving Panarea behind, we take a ferry to Milazzo, on Sicily, considered one of the most beautiful villages of Italy, and then drive to Taormina. After an independent lunch, we take a walking tour through the upper town, perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea. Labeled by Goethe “a corner of paradise,” Taormina has drawn visitors since its days as an essential stop on the Grand Tour. Visit the celebrated ancient Greek theater, with its spectacular view of volcanic Mt. Etna and the turquoise sea far below. Continue on to our resort in the heart of Mount Etna Park and gather for dinner. Overnight at the 4-star Cavanera Etnea Resort for two nights. (B,D)

Wednesday, May 21: Hiking Mt. Etna | Wine tasting | Farewell dinner 2.5-hour, 3-mile hike (850 up and down) OR  4-hour, 6-mile hike (2,625 feet up and down)

Europe’s largest active volcano, Mt. Etna, is a UNESCO World Heritage (natural) Site that dominates eastern Sicily. Rifugio Sapienza (at 6,000 feet) is the starting point of our walk today. Cinder cones and extinct craters are features of the desolate landscape. From high on the mountain, there is a wonderful panorama of Sicily’s eastern coast. Depending on the weather and volcanic conditions, take 4×4 Jeeps to 9,500 feet and then continue on foot to 11,000 feet, escorted by an alpine guide. At the end of the excursion, reach an extraordinary winery on the slopes of this legendary volcano and behold a fascinating lava landscape forged by countless eruptions. Enjoy a wine tasting lunch, before driving back to our resort for some time at leisure. Gather this evening for a farewell dinner. (B,L,D)

Thursday, May 22: Fly home Take a private transfer to Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) for flights homeward. (B)
