What is Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical About?

Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical centres on the life of Jamaican singer, Bob Marley. After growing up in a troubled household, Marley sought mental refuge in creating music. With his group, The Wailers, Marley lept to the top of the charts. A cover version of “I Shot the Sheriff” reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973, and the Wailers found instant fame. After recording success, the band moved to London, but Bob Marley eventually split from his group to go solo.

Money couldn’t buy life for Bob Marley though. In his final years, he was nearly assassinated by seven armed men in Kingston in 1976. Eventually, Marley passed away from cancer in 1981. It is a dream come true to be part of this project and I cannot wait to get into the rehearsal room to start work with Arinzé and the whole team to bring Bob’s music and story to life. Get Up Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical

Producers have announced the world premiere of a brand-new musical that tells the remarkable story of iconic artist Bob Marley, which will open at the newly refurbished Lyric Theatre in London’s West End this Autumn!

Taking inspiration from Marley’s visionary lyrics to tell his extraordinary personal story, and featuring an electrifying mix of his hits played live, Get Up Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical is brought to the stage by the Olivier award-winning team comprised of writer Lee Hall and director Clint Dyer.

The production will star Arinzé Kene as Bob Marley.

With unprecedented access to Marley’s catalogue, the musical will feature Marley’s greatest songs performed live by the cast including “No Woman No Cry”, “Exodus”, “3 Little Birds”, “Get Up, Stand Up” and many more.

Cedella Marley (Bob Marley’s daughter) said:  “Our father’s music means so much to so many people around the world, we’re beyond thrilled to be able to bring it to both fans and new audiences alike in a new way led by the stellar team of Lee Hall and Clint Dyer, and starring the fantastic Arinzé.  As a family we feel that our father would be proud to know that his legacy is a source of creative inspiration and continues to bring people together.”

Following a hugely successful workshop in 2019, producers Playful Productions, Stage Play and Trim the Wind are delighted to announce that Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical, the definitive new musical featuring Bob Marley’s iconic hits played live on stage, will begin previews in London at the newly refurbished Lyric Theatre on Saturday 6th February 2021. Brought to the stage by a multi-award-winning team, Lee Hall’s (Billy Elliot The Musical, Network) book takes direct inspiration from Marley’s visionary lyrics to tell his extraordinary personal story as an artist, the production will be directed by Clint Dyer and star Arinzé Kene (Misty, Girl from the North Country).

Arinzé Kene said: “I feel absolutely honoured to be able to take on this role. It is not only an honour to be able to spread Bob Marley’s message further, but to get to be him for a little while is a lifelong dream come true. I grew up on his music and his mantra and he has been one of my role models since I was a child. I feel as if he’s in my DNA. He’s the man, I love him.”

Ellen DeGeneres complains she was ‘kicked out of show business’ for being mean as she begins comedy tour

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Ellen DeGeneres’ new stand-up routine includes a bit about getting booted from Hollywood for being “mean” after her 2020 toxic workplace scandal.

The former “Ellen DeGeneres Show” host, who performed at Largo at the Coronet Theater in West Hollywood Wednesday, complained to viewers that she was “kicked out of show businesses” not once but twice.

“There here’s no mean people in show business. The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind,” DeGeneres, 66, said on stage during her new tour, “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour.” ( via Rolling Stone ).

“I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f–k yourself,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised.”

The “Finding Dory” voice actor reminded viewers that she also got the boot from TV when she came out as gay, thus ending her eponymous sitcom “Ellen” in the late ’90s.

“Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay,” she quipped.

ellen degeneres

DeGeneres experienced her second fall from grace in 2020 when she was accused of leading a toxic workplace , which resulted in the firing of three of her top producers .

Employees came forward and accused DeGeneres of leading the set with intimidation, racism and fear. A producer on an Australian morning show who had been on the set even claimed the comedian demanded no one make eye contact with her.

“I’m giving stuff away…and I danced, then I was mean and they didn’t like me again,” she said during her performance.

Andy Lassner and Ellen DeGeneres

“It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

Warner Bros. canceled the celebrity-filled talk show in 2022 following the controversy.

“This was a whole different thing,” she replied to a fan at the end of the set when she launched into an informal conversation with attendees. “This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful. I couldn’t gain perspective.

ellen degeneres

“I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal,” she continued. “I just thought, ‘Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way it’s ending.’”

Jokes aside, the “Saving the Gorillas” narrator admitted the scandal was “devastating.”

“I just hated the way the show ended,” she shared. “I love that show so much and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way.”

DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, admitted during the event that they both lay low in the aftermath because it was hard on both of them, but now they’re ready to get back to living.

“It’s hard to dance when you’re crying,” DeGeneres told an audience member. “But I am dancing now.”

“Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour” will head to San Diego, Calif., then Washington State, Oregon and the Bay Area. She told the crowd that her tour will culminate with a new Netflix special that will tape in the fall.

How to get tickets to Charli XCX and Troye Sivan in San Francisco

I n a match made in dance music heaven, pop icons Charli XCX and Troye Sivan are teaming up for a North American arena tour this fall, and general  tickets to this 21-city roadshow — including an Oct. 20 stop at Chase Center — go live on April 26 at 10 a.m. local time.

“Charli XCX and Troye Sivan present: Sweat” kicks off Sept. 14 in Detroit, with stops in Toronto, New York, Boston, Los Angeles and more, before wrapping in Seattle Oct 23.

The tour news finds Charli XCX gearing up for the release of her sixth solo album “Brat” June 7, fresh off the announcement of her upcoming “Brat 2024” U.K. arena tour, and recently engaged to partner George Daniel of The 1975.

Sivan, meanwhile, has seen his third studio album, “Something to Give Each Other,” debut at No. 1 in his home country of Australia, before scoring two Grammy nominations for the lead single “Rush,” just days before raking in Song of the Year and Best Solo Artist at Australia's ARIA Awards.

Each musician, on their own, is a powerhouse, producing utterly irresistible, eminently danceable pop that feels as mainstream and radio-ready as it feels underground and experimental. But together, their chemistry makes pure musical magic, as seen in their collaborations “1999” and “2099.”

No new XCX-Sivan single has been confirmed as of yet, but the prolific artists and IRL besties won’t likely let the opportunity pass them by, and if one does happen, chances are, you’ll hear it Oct. 20 at Chase Center.

To score seats for “Charli XCX and Troye Sivan present: Sweat,” head to Ticketmaster on Thursday, April 26, at 10 a.m. ET to get tickets at face value before they sell out. VIP passes are also available at this time, which include perks like early entrance to Chase Center, pre-show photo ops by the stage, VIP lounge access, rideshare vouchers and more.

To ensure first dibs at face-value tickets, we suggest logging into your Ticketmaster account 15 minutes prior to the general onsale.
