Dolphin Watching Tour of South Padre Island

Dolphin cruises are one of our favorite things to do on South Padre Island TX. The waters near South Padre Island host several resident pods of dolphins. The pods with younger dolphins are more playful and love to jump, splash, and flip in the air.

If you’re lucky, you can even spot mama dolphins with small babies by their side. The dolphins often swim alongside boats and may follow them for quite a distance.

Dolphin cruises are the most popular South Padre Island attractions

Out of the many available options, how do you select a dolphin tour?

We recommend choosing one that is eco friendly. Additionally, tours that offer a personal experience, accommodating 4 to 6 people in a small boat, are preferable to those that cater to large groups. Dolphins tend to come much closer to pontoons than they do to larger, more intimidating boats.

There are several attractions at the center, including a butterfly garden, watchtower that offers bird’s-eye views of the area, birding trails, as well as an alligator sanctuary. The Nature Center entry fee is quite nominal and well worth the experience.

Indoor Attractions

The center offers informative talks about the alligators a few times during the day. For an additional price, you can choose to touch a baby alligator and a non-venomous snake afterwards. We opted for this and our kids loved the unique opportunity. The encounter is completely ethical as the baby alligator is a rescued one, and not intentionally taken from its mother.

While inside the center, you should climb up to the 5 story watchtower to see panoramic views along the Laguna Madre. The views from up there are really spectacular. This is also one of the most romantic spots on the island. On our trip, we saw a proposal take place here – complete with rose petals arranged by the Nature Center staff.

The Viewing Tower offers incredible views

Outdoor Attractions

The outdoor Monarch Butterfly Garden is the perfect place to spot a kaleidoscope of Monarch butterflies during the migrating season. Every October they celebrate butterfly migration events complete with live music, native plant sale, butterfly garden tours, and activities for kids – face painting and costume contest!

Next Stop – The Alligator Sanctuary! All the alligators in the sanctuary are rescued from roadsides, backyards, or peoples homes. The center provides them with a safe environment. From the boardwalk path, you can see several juvenile alligators sunning themselves. Keep an eye out for Big Padre, the 50-year-old resident alligator.

Boardwalk Trail as seen from the top of the Viewing Tower

The highlight of a visit to the SPI Birding and Nature Center is, however, the birding trail. This South Padre Island boardwalk trail is over 3300 feet long and takes you out over the wetlands. Visitors can spot resident as well as migratory birds including pelicans, oystercatchers, spoonbills, thrushes, falcons, several types of ducks, and warblers. The 5 bird blinds on the trail are great to sit and observe the birds.

We recommend keeping aside 2 to 3 hours to see the Nature Center exhibits and hike the trails. Be sure to stop at their gift shop before you head out. This is the best place on South Padre Island to buy ethically sourced nature-themed souvenirs.

Sea Turtle Inc

Love Sea Turtles? Want to understand sea turtle conservation and rehabilitation efforts? Head over to Sea Turtle Inc . This amazing family attraction is located next to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.

Sea Turtle Inc plays a very important role in the community. It serves as an aquarium / animal hospital / rehabilitation center / ecotourism attraction. The center rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles before releasing them out into the open ocean. The center provides a permanent home to several injured sea turtles who can never be released in the wild.

It is amazing to watch the sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc and read their stories

Any time you visit, the center is likely to have several injured marine turtle species under care and observation. Visitors can also attend a sea turtle feeding, which is an amazing experience for kids. Our son was able to feed them lettuce – a memory he remembers very well.

Sea Turtle Inc also has several exhibits that help visitors learn about the different sea turtle species. They can touch the gigantic turtle shells. Visitors also learn how human generated trash – such as plastic bottles and fishing nets – harm the sea turtles. Our kids were really moved by how the trash thrown in the ocean can change a sea turtle’s life forever. Since then they have been diligent about picking up trash on the beach.

Located near Gravity Park, the tent venue is home to amazing themed sandcastles that are updated for occasions such as Valentines Day and Spring Break.

We also love the Sea Turtle Art Trail . This trail features vibrant painted fiberglass sea turtles placed at strategic locations throughout the island. Each turtle is decorated with its own unique design, making for colorful photo opportunities.

Hidden Gems on South Padre Island

Next up are these South Padre Island secret spots that only locals and those who have truly visited the island know about! We enjoy exploring such hidden gems and they make up for great travel tales.

Cristo de Los Pescadores statue

On the south side of the island, within Isla Blanca Park, you will find the statue of ‘Christ of the Fishermen’ or Cristo de Los Pescadores . This memorial is built to honor fishermen that were lost at sea. Along the base of the statue, you will discover sad but beautiful inscriptions written in memory of those who never returned. Reading the epitaphs is a moving experience.

The statue reminds me of ‘Christ the Redeemer’ in Brazil with its open arms and kind expression. The views of the Gulf from near the statue are stunning. There is a picnic table located just near the statue, which is perfect for a nice lunch.

Visitors need to pay a small fee to access this area on the south side of the island, but that gives access to many amenities including the pristine beaches and changing rooms found here.

Gorgeous views of the Gulf Coast on South Padre Island

Playa Blanca

At the southernmost tip of the island, inside the Isla Blanca Park , you will find the beautiful Island Blanca beach. Better known as Playa Blanca, this beach is one of the least crowded ones on the island due to the entry fee required to visit this part of the island.

Many visitors who stay near the north side of the island in large resorts and hotels, simply miss out on this excellent beach. You will also find a large boardwalk here as well as restrooms and other amenities. We love visiting this beach and always have great fun playing in the sand and swimming in the water.

Isla Blanca Beach Park has a nice bordwalk area

Chapel By The Sea

Chapel by the Sea is a must for those who are looking for a place to worship on the island as well as architecture lovers. This is one of the most charming churches I have stumbled upon. It is located on the south side of the island near Isla Blanca Park.

The exterior is a striking white-washed building set amongst the swaying palm trees. Mosaic tile steps will take you inside the chapel. The interior is equally gorgeous. The floor to ceiling windows make the chapel airy and full of natural light. The windows offer amazing views of the island.

The service here is a powerful spiritual experience. You will see a lot of Winter Texans walk in flip flops and beachwear to attend service. The sermon is straight from the Bible and the music is excellent. The church also holds many other activities throughout the year. The Chapel by the Sea is also a popular wedding spot on South Padre Island.

Port Isabel Lighthouse

The Port Isabel Lighthouse is located across the Queen Isabella Causeway, just 10 minutes away from South Padre Island. This is the only lighthouse in Texas that you can climb. The historic light and the surrounding buildings are preserved as Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site .

Visiting the lighthouse is an amazing experience. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a nominal entry fee and see the beautiful 360 views from above. The spiral staircase and ladders to the top make for a very thrilling climb. At the top, you can enjoy bird’s eye views of Port Isabel, Laguna Madre, and South Padre Island.

Beachcombing at South Padre Island

We love to go beachcombing while visiting South Padre Island. Our kids enjoy having their own buckets and hunting for seashells. We can easily spend a couple of happy afternoons on the beach, bucket in hand, looking for treasures.

Gather sea shells on South Padre Island beaches

South Padre Island is a great place to go beachcombing as the powerful Gulf current brings a lot of things to the shore. You can find driftwood, seashells, seeds, dried seaweed, sea glass, and other unique items. Even sea fossils are said to wash up frequently at South Padre Island. Go just after high tide and you’ll find some of the best treasures from the sea.

If you are lucky, you can find large isolated areas on the island where there are few other beachgoers and an entire empty beach full of treasures where you can beach comb to your heart’s content. You can bring any treasures that you find back home. We have been able to find seashells, sea glass, and sea pebbles at South Padre Island.

Be careful of dangerous things like pufferfish which might wash up on South Padre Island beaches

South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center

SPI Dolphin Research Center is a great educational opportunity to learn about the most intelligent marine creatures – the dolphins. The center promotes dolphin education and marine life conservation. It is located in Port Isabel, Texas just across the causeway from South padre Island.

The center has several dolphins for visitors to see and connect to. Visitors can also see other rescued animals like sea turtles, tortoises, iguana, fish, crabs, octopus, and snails. Kids can touch and feed the animals and learn more about them. It is easy to understand why the Dolphin Research Center is amongst the best places to visit in South Padre Island for families.

Dolphin cruise on pontoon boat with South Padre Island Dolphin Research and Nature Center

The center also offers eco-friendly dolphin cruises. Their dolphin tours are on smaller pontoon boats that don’t disturb marine life. They do not drag nets through the water to trap creatures for tourists to see like few other tours. Instead, they take you out on the water to see the marine animals in their natural environment.

The person who makes this magic happen is Scarlett, the dolphin whisperer and her friendly dolphin dogs who can sense the dolphins before you see them. She takes you down in her well-maintained pontoon. Families love seeing the dolphins and kids are amazed to see them leap and play in the water.

The center as well as its dolphin tours are currently closed .

Great article! I’m an east coast junkie, being from Florida. With all the great beaches there, the last place you think about is Texas. South Padre Island sounds like a great place to visit. All you ever hear about is the Atlantic and Pacific. I personally favor the Gulf Coast a lot more.

' data-src=

I love the Gulf Coast as the water so much warmer. My favorite place to head to is Florida, but I live in Texas so I can easily go here as we do have great beaches too! Galveston and South Padre Island beaches are pretty awesome!

Great post for those of us looking for a last minute get away before the holiday season starts! You cover all the info we need from weather to travel to where to eat, which makes it easy to ‘sell’ S. Padre to anyone not interested in another beach trip this year. The hotel choices are nice too, since most of us get our flights and hotel bundled. Thanks for the info!

You are very welcome! Please let me know if you have any other questions, and thank you for visiting South Padre Island Travel guide.

This is a great article and a great website with plenty of travel and holiday locations! Wow, I’d love to visit some of these locations one day, it’s going on my bucket list. Wow, I had no idea Texas had islands! You provide us with so much information as well as amazzzzing pictures – i can’t believe you took them yourself!

Any beach to me is amazing! I am glad you enjoyed visiting Beach Travel Destinations. If you ever need any additional information, please let me know.

Hi Leahrae, Thank you for such a nice post! South Padre Island is amazing. So beautiful. I didn’t know that there was only one island in Texas!! I love tropical destinations. And there is so much things to do! I use to dive. Do you know if there are some dive companies? You say that South Padre Island is warm. Do you know the water average temperature? It seems to be warm… Thank you so much. I would love to go there. Alex

Yes, there are several diving companies right on South Padre Island, American Diving and Deep Six Diving are the two that come to mind first. The last time I went to Padre was in April. They had a tropical storm coming thru, so the water seemed a bit cold to me. But then my pool stays at 92, so you can’t gauge it by what I tell you LOL. December thru February, it is going to be a bit chilly with water temps in the high 60s. Other than that it fluctuates between the mid 70s to upper 80s. Hope that helps 🙂 Thanks for reading Alex.

Wow! What a fantastic place. I went to Texas once and would have taken the time to visit South Padre Island if only I had the information you provide in you travel guide.

The place looks beautiful with so much to do. I hope to find time to back to Texas one day. I will not miss it next time.

Thanks for the great job. Cheers!

Thank you Caito. It really is a fantastic place. Miles and miles of beach and sand dunes. Most would not imagine to see this in Texas. Thanks for visiting South Padre Island travel guide.

South Padre Island sounds like paradise! Good to know that it’s easy to fly there and that cheap flights are available. I have never had a dolphin encounter and this is one thing that would attract me to the island, apart from the emerald water and miles of white sand of course! I would prefer not to stay in a hotel. Could you tell me what other kind of accommodation is available? I love camping and sleeping under the stars so that would be my best option.

There are campgrounds there, and yes that is an awesome way to visit a beach personally. There are five camping grounds where you can stay camped out on the beach. Here is the link to find the different campgrounds https://www.nps.gov/pais/planyourvisit/camping.htm Let me know if you need anything else Erica. Thanks for visiting Beach Travel Destinations.

What a fabulous insight to beach holidaying in the US other than Florida! Being European, I know very little of the amazing resorts around other areas of the US. Thank you so much for your informative guidance Leahrae! Which airports would you suggest flying in to from London please?

Oh, I would look at Houston, that is the closest airport to the beaches. And being a large airport, it is going to have better airfare rates than the smaller airports in the area. You can also fly into Dallas if you like, there are lots of things to do and see in Dallas. Than it is only about 4 hour drive down south. Thanks for visiting!

Wow what a great write up I am ready to pack my bags and move, not travel but move! What would be the best time of year to visit? I mean I don’t mind a few tourist, but dont want to get crushed by them. I also would like a balance of good weather with the timing as well. Any help would be appreciated. Marc

Hi Marc, living in Texas is GREAT! I absolutely love it. I would go in September. The weather is still beautiful, but you’ll skip all of the crowds. Absolutely do not go during Spring Break! Thanks for reading my South Padre Island Travel Guide.

' data-src=

Have you gone on any of the excursions for Padre island yourself? Which one of them is your favorite? I would love to go to Padre Island someday this fall/winter. Also, any recommendations on places to stay? Is Padre Island your favorite Texas beach? If not, which one is? I just need to go somewhere warm this winter. Thanks!

I personally like Galveston Beach the best. I think they have a lot more action … i.e. beach life, little hole-in-the-wall restaurants and activities. There are so may hotels that I would recommend. I think the south end of Padre is the best, and the Isla Grand Beach Resort, top notch. At Galveston beach, stay at the Hilton Galveston Island Resort. You could actually visit both beaches in the same vacation. It is really not that far to drive and you could split the time. I would probably opt for Galveston beach. Stay clear during Spring Break. It is not any fun then with all of the crazy college kids. It’s like one of the top places they go for Spring Break.

' data-src=

The pictures are simply breathtaking. You are the perfect tour guide because I was right there as I read . Plus you told me everything I needed to know and did not think to ask. I did not know that Texas had islands. When you said Texas I was like noooo. Lol. I would have never guessed. I bet you get that all the time huh?

Yes I do. I didn’t think they had em until I went there. It is beautiful and the sand dunes….amazing. It does have a nice stiff breeze which blows off the coast. I imagine it would be way too hot without it in the summer though. Thanks for visiting South Padre Island Travel Guide.

' data-src=

Wow, what a terrific travel site this is. Visiting all these beautiful beaches for your website must really be fun. Reminds me of when i was younger, I thought the best job in the world would be either testing Sealy mattresses for comfort, or Hawaiian Tropic suntan lotion for tan quality.

Everything about South Padre Island appears to be outstanding (wish I was out standing on that beach right now!)… I particularly like the fact that there are 300 days of beach weather in South Padre Island. Sign me up for that Dolphin Watch!!

Ok Hal! Oh yeah, I think I could test Hawaiian tropic suntan lotions for quality too! It would need to be tested in various locations just to make sure 🙂 Thanks for reading about South Padre beaches and the travel guide. And yes, when you do come, sign up for the Dolphin Watch!

' data-src=

Another quick question. I’m having trouble deciding whether to book airfares and accommodation too South Padre Island.

Going to Las Vegas. I know if I go to Las Vegas I will more than likely lose a significant amount of money.

Do you know if there are any cheap flights and accommodation over at Las Vegas?

Yes, there is always low airfares to Vegas. And the hotels are really reasonable too if you go during the week. They raise the rates for the weekends. I know which hotels offer great prices, let me know if you need any further help.

Here I was thinking that Texas was in the middle of the United States.

I’m from Australia so I don’t understand Fahrenheit. What is 65` F in Celsius?

Go you know if JetStar is still a running airfare company? I heard they have very cheap airfares.

I would really enjoy going on a cruise with Osprey cruises.

65°F it the same as 18.3°C. I don’t know if that is warm for you 🙂 And yes, JetStar airlines is still running. I am not familiar with them, but I looked them up and they do fly. I am glad you enjoyed reading the South Padre Island Travel Guide.

The main difference between the two beaches is that you can drive on the county beach, whereas driving on the city beach is prohibited. You can also access many of the beaches by staying at any of the beachfront resorts along the coastline.

The most important thing to know about beaches on South Padre Island is the public access points that all offer something different. The city beach has 25 public access points along Gulf Boulevard. Some are basic walking paths to the beach, some have restrooms and bike racks, and others are close to restaurants where you can step in for a bite to eat.

You can enjoy lots of small local eateries near the beaches around get around the island by car or golf cart, or take the free Island Metro that runs from the Convention Center to Isla Blanca beach.

It is a fun and spacious beach that can accommodate every kind of activity, from surfing and biking to kite flying.

This beach also gets high marks for its comforts, like paved picnic pavilions, benches, ample parking, grills available for public use, restrooms, and showers.

There is a wide boardwalk that parallels the beach with access to the sand, so you can easily find your perfect spot or just people-watch from a higher elevation. Located on the northern part of the city beach is Clayton's Beach Grill, which is a beachfront staple for food.

On the south end of the beach is a rock jetty, where you will find fishermen, and you can watch the boats coming in and out of the shipping channel.

If you want to enjoy Isla Blanca Beach for more than a day, there is an RV park next to the beach for camping. There is a day fee to use the beach, and the Island Metro has a drop-off at the entrance to Isla Blanca Beach Park which is another great way to cool off and one of the top things to do on South Padre Island.

Address: 33174 State Park Road 100, South Padre Island, Texas

Edwin King Atwood County Park

Highlights: Family-friendly, easy access to the beach, public parking, picnic pavilion, boardwalk

The Edwin King Atwood County Park on the north end is one of the best places to access the county beach on South Padre Island. This section of county beach is nice, especially for families that want to spend a full beach day and have quick access to paved parking, shaded picnic areas, and restrooms.

You can get to E.K. Atwood Park from beach access #5 and get to the beach from the boardwalk. This beach has great swimming in the Gulf and plenty of room to set up umbrellas or a beach shade canopy. It is quite scenic also, with steep sand dunes on the edge of the beach.

Andy Bowie County Park Beach

Highlights: Perfect swimming beach, public access via the park entrance, concessions, fishing, beach chair rentals

If you want to enjoy the county beach on the north side of South Padre Island, one of the most comfortable access points is Andy Bowie County Park . There is a day-use fee to access the park, but you will find everything you need for the day, like paved parking, restrooms, pavilions, and picnic areas.

This is a good beach for swimming in the waves, fishing, and relaxing in the sand. Beach chair and umbrella rentals are available, and food concessions are located nearby. The Andy Bowie Park and beach are located directly across from the South Padre Island Convention Center with many restaurants within walking distance. There are RV sites at the park for those who plan to camp.

The beach is also close to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, where you can enjoy more of the outdoors by walking along the Laguna Madre Nature Trail to see some of the bird species that inhabit the area.

Address: 7300 Park Road 100 N, South Padre Island, Texas

Harbor Beach (Beach Access #1)

Highlight: First public access point for the South Padre Island public beach

If you do not want to use the beach parks, the Harbor Beach access point is a good place to start your South Padre Island Beach experience. This is the first access point for the public beach, located along Gulf Boulevard.

Access point one is a convenient spot because there is a paved parking lot with a foot access path to the beach. There is a bike rack for securing bicycles and a short walkway to the sand. This access point is located next to Rocotto Grill, where you can stop in for lunch or a snack.

Sea Island Circle (Beach Access #5)

Highlight: The beach is within walking distance of cafes for a bite to eat

The Sea Island Circle public beach access point #5 is located off Gulf Boulevard. This is a basic access point with a walking path to the beach, but it has portable restrooms, whereas some other access points do not.

You will want to pack what you need for the day and take it with you, as there are no restaurants close to this spot. There are a few cafés within walking distance on Gulf Boulevard.

Thrive Beach

Highlights: The last beach stop and a picturesque stretch of sand at the far end of Padre Boulevard Road

Thrive Beach is a stunning beach located on the north end of South Padre Island at the very end of Padre Boulevard Road. The road completely ends, but you can park on the road and walk through the sand dunes to the beach. You can also drive down to this beach from the oceanfront with a proper vehicle. Be advised that it is quite windy in this location, and the sand dunes are deep.

This is quite a unique space and a great beach to access if you are looking for a little bit of added adventure. The landscape is picturesque. This is a more peaceful and less crowded beach than the main beach parks and access points. Swimming is popular and so is shell hunting, as large finds wash up on this section of beach.

There are no restrooms, food, or other amenities, so this is a good option if you just want to spend a few hours in a more tranquil and scenic beach setting. Due to the blowing sand, it is advised that you wear sunglasses and take water and sunscreen with you.

Treasure Island Circle (Beach Access #11)

Highlight: One of the easiest public access points for the South Padre Island city beach

Treasure Island Circle is one of the best public beach access points to the South Padre Island city beach. Access point #11 has a paved parking lot and small shade pavilion.

The beach access walkway is just steps from the sand, so this is a nice spot for morning beach walks. This access point has public bathrooms, a water fountain, and beach showers. The Palms Café is nearby, so you can grab a bite to eat after your day at the beach or use the picnic tables.

Gulf Circle (Access #3)

Highlights: Free beach access point, parking, public showers, restrooms

The Gulf Circle beach access has several conveniences for public use. It is public access point #3 off Gulf Boulevard. This free beach access point is nice because it has paved parking and a sidewalk to the beach, so you can haul a beach cart or canopies easily to the oceanfront. This location has restrooms and beach showers to rinse off after a day in the sand.

UFO Beach

Highlight: The walk to find the unique washed-up buoy that gave the beach its name.

One of the most unique and fun beaches near South Padre Island is UFO Beach, and it's advised for those looking for a little adventure and exercise along with their day in the sand.

The benchmark for arrival is a wild-looking buoy that locals believe washed ashore after a hurricane many years ago. Over time it has become a destination for those who want to see an otherworldly-looking landmark in the sand that has been adorned over the years with graffiti, toys, and other mementos from visitors.

The beach here is also fantastic. Since this is a remote area on the north end of South Padre Island, there are fewer beachgoers. The shells that wash up on this section are remarkable in size, variety, and numbers.

UFO Beach can only be accessed by 4WD vehicles from the beachfront or on foot with a 3.5-mile trek from the dead end of Padre Boulevard. This is a remote beach with no restrooms, so you will want to take everything you need with you, like sunscreen, snacks, and water, especially if you plan to walk the seven-mile round trip and spend some time on the beach.

Neptune Circle (Access #16)

Highlight: A remote stretch of beach nice for finding large shells

Neptune Circle city beach access has public parking but not many other amenities. There are no restrooms in this location, and there are no restaurants nearby, so you will want to pack snacks. This is a good section of beach to use if you just want quick access and only plan to spend a few hours.

It has easier parking than some of the other more populated access points. There is a walkover to the beach from the parking area. Another nice feature about this access point is that it sits next to a butterfly garden along Gulf Boulevard.

Gay Dawn Circle (Access #20)

Highlights: A nice beach for building sandcastles and finding shells

The Gay Dawn Circle public access point #20 is located at the far end of the city beach. This is a good access point if you want to walk from the city beach sands to the county beach sands along the oceanfront. This area has paved public parking that leads to a beach walkover and sidewalk. There are showers at this access point but no restrooms or nearby restaurants.

Good Hope Circle (Access #21)

Highlights: Easy public access and paved parking

The Good Hope Circle is access point #21 to the city beach. There is a paved parking lot that leads to the beach access walkover on the northern end of Gulf Boulevard. This access point does not have public restrooms, but showers are available. It has all the great swimming and beach activities as other sections of the public beach, and it is a quick access spot if you only plan to spend a short time at the beach.

Aquarius Circle (Access #18)

Highlights: Public beach access walkover, paved parking, close to beach dining

The Aquarius Circle public beach access #18 has the basics for quick access to the beach. There is paved parking that leads to the beach walkover. Showers are available at this location, but there are no public restrooms. You are within walking distance of the Wanna Wanna Grill , located near the parking lot on Gulf Boulevard, where you can grab lunch.

Beach Circle (Access #4)

Highlights: Small public beach with beachfront access to several other public beaches.

Beach Circle is public access point #4 off Gulf Boulevard. There is a small, paved parking lot leading to a beach walkover and sidewalk. If you stay near this access point on the beachside, you should be aware that there are no restrooms at this location. There are some public restrooms located just a short walk south at access point #3.

There are lots of options for lodging on South Padre Island, from full-service oceanfront resorts to more budget-friendly hotels and motels that still offer easy access to the beach. Here are a few South Padre Island hotels to consider:

Luxury Hotels:

  • The Beach Resort at South Padre Island is one of five full-service resorts on South Padre Island. It is located on the oceanfront, with direct access to the beach, and has three pools for guests, with restaurants located on the property.
  • The Isla Grand Beach Resort is conveniently located near the main attractions on South Padre Island and has easy beach access. There are several pools and restaurants, and recreation like volleyball courts on the property.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • The Hilton Garden Inn South Padre Beachfront has suites and family rooms, with ocean views and an oceanfront pool for guests.
  • La Copa Inn Beach Hotel is a beachside hotel with standard rooms and multi-room accommodations for families with a pool. It is located less than a mile from Isla Blanca Park and beach.

Budget Hotels:

  • A budget-friendly motel that offers kitchenettes and free breakfast and is close to the beaches and attractions is the Super 8 by Wyndham .
  • Another option is the Ramada by Wyndham & Suites that has easy beach access, free breakfast, and is pet friendly.

The best times to visit South Padre Island for sand and sun are during the months of September, October, and November when air and water temperatures are still high, but the weather is a bit more comfortable for spending long days in the sun. It gets hot in this popular south Texas vacation spot, so no matter when you, go it is important to stay hydrated and pack plenty of sunscreen.

The month of September has average daytime highs in the 80s. It is also the rainiest month, so while water temperatures are perfect for swimming, you will want to have some backup plans. The months of October and November have temperatures ranging in the high-70s to mid-80s. These are comfortable weather conditions for beachcombing, flying kites, and relaxing in or near the water, and crowds are lighter before the snowbird vacationers arrive.

The next best months for weather on South Padre Island are March, April, and May, which are also the busiest for spring breakers that migrate down to the beaches. The average temperatures for the spring months range from the mid-60s to mid-80s and the water temperatures are warm enough for swimming. May is particularly nice because most spring breakers have left the island and the hurricane season has not yet started.

December, January, and February are nice months if you want warm temperatures and a beach scene, but do not plan to swim. While average daytime temperatures are in the 60s and 70s, the water can be chilly this time of year. June, July, and August are hot, with average temperatures hovering in the 90s, and these are the months with the greatest risk for hurricanes.

Laguna Madre Nature Trail Laguna Madre Nature Trail free

According to many, the best way to experience South Padre's wild side is to take a stroll along the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, a boardwalk that runs from the South Padre Island Convention Centre out to the Laguna Madre wetlands. This is also a major spot for bird-watching: Throughout the year, more than 300 species of birds pass through the South Padre Island area and the Laguna Madre Nature Trail is a great place for you to see them in their natural habitat. The Laguna Madre Nature Trail is open 24 hours a day and access is free.

Right next to the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, you'll find the South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center, which offers more bird-watching, a five-story viewing tower and an auditorium showing short documentary movies. You'll be able to see different bird and butterfly species as well as other wildlife. Admission to the center costs $6 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for children. Visit nature center's  website for more information.

Sea Turtle, Inc. Sea Turtle, Inc.

Founded in 1977, Sea Turtle, Inc. was established to help protect all species of marine turtles. If you're looking to see these fascinating creatures up close, this is the place to go. Volunteers offer presentations about turtle conservation, a regular hit among guests, and kid-friendly activities teach your little ones how to identify different types of sea turtles. Your kids will also love the scavenger hunt available at the center. And don't miss your chance to see the littlest residents: visitors are invited to look on as baby sea turtles are released back into the wild. Plan to check the website in advance to see if you can partake in one of these activites, as hatchling releases are not a regular event. You also have the opportunity to "adopt" individual sea turtles and nests, the proceeds of which go to helping the center's conservation programs.

By the time they leave, guests adore the turtles at the center and appreciate the group’s mission to save them. Located on the northern end of Padre Boulevard just south of the South Padre Island Convention Center, Sea Turtle, Inc. is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; it stays open until 5 p.m. from June to mid-August. There is  a minimal donation fee. For more information, visit Sea Turtle, Inc.'s website .

Isla Blanca Park Isla Blanca Park free

Sitting on the southern edge of South Padre Island, Isla Blanca Park is home to some of the area's best beaches, not to mention fishing spots, playgrounds and boating facilities. Plus, it's the site of one of the most highly visited South Padre attractions: a huge statue of El Cristo de los Pescadores (Christ of the Fishermen). This is also a great spot to leave land behind and explore the sea on a kiteboard or a snorkeling excursion. Isla Blanca Park also features several lodging and camping options as well as restroom and shower facilities.

Many recent visitors praised the facilities on-site and say the warm, clear water make this a must-visit spot. However, multiple campers complained of poor customer service from park staff.

Museums of Port Isabel Museums of Port Isabel

If you need a break from the beach or are interested in learning more about the area, consider planning visits to the Museums of Port Isabel. Take your pick between three popular historic sites: the Port Isabel Lighthouse, the Port Isabel Historical Museum and the Treasures of the Gulf Museum. You can visit each individually or for a discounted entry fee, can gain access to all three.

The lighthouse was constructed in 1852 to help guide ships through Brazos Santiago Pass. Now it's the only one in the area that's open to the public – visitors are also invited to explore the ground's keeper's cottage. Located just south of the lighthouse and housed in an old dry goods store, the Port Isabel Historical Museum houses one of the largest collections of artifacts from the Mexican-American War, not to mention a theater and gift shop. Right next door is the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, a must-see if you're traveling with kids. Here they can learn all about what life was like aboard a 16th-century ship and get a good look at some of the treasure found beneath the waters of the Gulf.

Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center

After learning about turtles at Sea Turtle, Inc. , take the kids to the Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center to come face to face with some of South Padre's other marine animals. With kid-friendly touch tanks featuring native species like starfish and hermit crabs, plus daily nature presentations on dolphins and other marine life, this nonprofit attraction aims to educate visitors about wildlife protection along the Gulf Coast. For an extra fee (about $25 per person) you can hop on a boat for a 90-minute Dolphin Tour and observe the animals living in the Laguna Madre Bay. Many recent visitors said this was their favorite experience in South Padre Island.

Flanking the edge of Port Isabel's Lighthouse Square (across Laguna Madre from South Padre Island and easily accessible from the Queen Isabella Causeway), the Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $3 per person, which is used to help feed and care for the animals. Beach Park at Isla Blanca Beach Park at Isla Blanca

Keeping your kids entertained at the beach can be difficult. So when the weather starts to swelter and the little ones are bored of the shore, head to Beach Park at Isla Blanca. Here you'll find water rides, a surfing machine, a hot tub bar and a giant sandcastle play area that are sure to amuse. When it comes to keeping everyone's tummy from rumbling, the park is home to a variety of concession stands as well as the Shrimp Haus Restaurant. You're also welcome to bring your own picnic.

Past travelers said the park is great way to spend the day, especially if you have kids who are tired of the beach. Although, some warn that prices are high and the food is less than mediocre.

Fall is the best time to visit these 10 national parks

Milder temperatures, fewer folks, wildlife migrations, and special events color these natural wonders come autumn.

Yellow and orange colored leave filled trees frame a view of a lake below with a mountain in the back.

Post-pandemic,   U.S. national parks   have attracted record crowds as people flock to the great outdoors for fresh air and wide-open spaces. At least 10 parks—including   Yosemite , Zion , Arches, and   Acadia —have been forced to limit visitation during the summer peak season to combat lack of parking, bumper-to-bumper traffic, and overcrowded trails and other facilities.

If that’s not enough to make people think twice about visiting national parks in the summer, climate change has become another mitigating factor. With an average daytime temperature of 121.9°F, Death Valley National Park endured its hottest month ever in July 2024. Other Sunbelt parks have also endured record heat this past summer.

Yet for those who still want to visit desert and subtropical parks, there’s an easy solution: taking that long-awaited road trip in the fall, when these parks tend to have far fewer visitors and much milder weather.

This is also prime time for natural phenomena like supermoons and animal migrations, as well as festivals and other special events. And for those who can’t imagine autumn without multicolored leaves, there’s also the possibility of radiant fall foliage.   Here are 10 parks that offer ideal visiting conditions in the fall.

1. Everglades National Park   (Florida)

Summers in this sprawling South Florida park are notoriously hot, humid, buggy, and wet. This area is also affected by hurricanes, which can really put a crimp on travel plans. By the middle of October, temperatures have dropped to a much more comfortable level for hiking, biking, and paddling in the park. The peak of the hurricane season has passed, and you can feel the daily transition from the wet to the dry season.

As water levels drop, it becomes easier to spot (and photograph) water dwelling creatures like gators and manatees. Fall is also prime bird watching season, as various migratory species make their way down the   Atlantic Flyway   to spend winter in the park and or pass through on their way to the tropics.

( These are the 10 national parks that have the best fall foliage .)

2. Congaree National Park   (South Carolina)

One of the least known (and visited) national parks, Congaree was established in 2003 to protect that largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the American Southeast.

Congaree bucks the trend of higher summer visitation because those who frequent the South Carolina park already know that fall is one of the best times for paddling the 50-mile (80-km) Congaree River Blue Trail or the 15-mile (24-km)   Cedar Creek Canoe Trail .

Average daily temperatures in the 70s or low 80s, autumn’s milder weather also makes it easier to walk the park’s boardwalk trails in search of migratory birds or fall colors. And no matter what season, Congaree is one of the few national parks that never charges an entrance fee.

3. Natchez Trace Parkway   (Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee)

Rambling 444 miles (714 kilometers) between the Mississippi River and Nashville, the Natchez Trace flaunts more than 10,000 years of American history and some of the prettiest scenery in the entire South.

Unless you’re into heat, humidity, and bugs, summers along the route are downright oppressive. But autumn is sublime, the parkway’s campgrounds and picnic areas flanked by fall foliage, and migratory birds making their way south along the Mississippi Flyway.

The fall season also brings special events along the parkway like the   Natchez Balloon Festival   (October 18-19) and   Dancing With The King   (October 18-20) in Tupelo, Mississippi, the hometown of Elvis Presley.

4. Big Bend National Park   (Texas)

Landscape of a desert with a road in the valley of mountains curving through the center of the frame.

The huge park near the southwest corner of Texas often flies under the radar because it’s so far off the beaten path. But it’s worth the drive for those who cherish wild rivers, astounding desert landscapes, and quirky history.

Big Bend is blistering hot in the summer, with triple digit temperatures every day at lower elevations. By the end of September, 80-degree temperatures are the norm, especially in the high altitude, forested Chisos Basin, located in the heart of the park.

Because the rainy season stretches into September, water is still high on the Rio Grande. Which means almost ideal conditions for   canoe camping   in spectacular Santa Elena Canyon and farther downstream.

( Go along as our photographer scouts wildlife and embraces the unknown in Big Bend National Park .)

5. Rocky Mountain National Park   (Colorado)

Landscape of trees with fall yellow leaves and mountain in back with cloudy blue sky.

This park is the home of the annual autumn migration of hundreds of elk from the high country to meadows (or “parks”) at lower elevations to mate and propagate their species. The males compete for the right to court female elk by displaying their massive antlers, releasing a musky odor, sometimes fighting, and always emitting a deep, sonorous bugle that epitomizes the rutting season.

This wildlife spectacular is set against a backdrop of Rocky Mountain National Park’s other fall phenomenon: golden aspen trees.

6. White Sands National Park   (New Mexico)

Cooler temperatures are just one of the reasons to visit White Sands in the fall, especially for those backpack-camping the park’s wilderness trail or surfing the ultra-bright dunes on discs or sleds.

Another reason to visit in the fall are awesome full moons that illuminate the unearthly landscapes of this New Mexico desert park. White Sands commemorates the autumn supermoons—when the celestial body appears larger than normal because it’s closer to the Earth—with ranger-led Full Moon Hikes (September 18 and October 16) and Full Moon Nights that feature live outdoor music, specifically a jazz band on September 17 as well as Native American musician and storyteller Randy Granger on October 17.

7. Saguaro National Park   (Arizona)

Saguaro cacti sit in the foreground of a desert landscape with a mountain in the back. Light pink clouds fill a blue sky above.

As Tucson’s big backyard, this southern Arizona desert park tends to be more popular with locals than long-distance visitors. They hike, bike and horseback ride in the park during the springtime for the wildflowers, largely avoid summer when it’s just too hot, and relish winter when the saguaro cactus are sometimes mantled in snow.

But there’s a window in the fall—between late September and the middle of October—when temperatures are mild, visitation is low, and you might have a trail through the giant succulents all to your lonesome, especially in the wilder Rincon Mountain area on Tucson’s west side.

( Find out where the 10 most popular national parks in the U.S. are. )

8. Capitol Reef National Park   (Utah)

A landscape of red and tan colored desert mountains filled with yellow and orange fall colored trees. A small stream flows through the bottom right of the frame.

As one of the largest national parks in the Lower 48 states, Capitol Reef is never overcrowded, not even during the summer vacation season.

But there’s a special reason to visit in the fall—harvest season in the orchards of historic Fruita, a 19th-century Mormon pioneer settlement along the Fremont River near the visitor center.

For a small fee, visitors can self-pick the heirloom peaches, pears, and apples with ladders and fruit-picking poles provided by the Park Service. Afterward, they can enjoy the literal fruits of their labor at the nearby picnic area and campground.

9. Joshua Tree National Park   (California)

A Joshua tree up close on the left side of the frame with multiple more trees behind. Mountains line the background.

An easy day-trip for the 24 million people who call Southern California home, Joshua Tree is crowded on weekends or holidays no matter what the season.

To avoid the masses, plan to visit on a weekday in October or November, after the Mojave Desert weather has finally chilled out and before the holiday hordes descend on popular selfie spots like Skull Rock and Cholla Cactus Garden.

By October, the average daytime temperature has dropped into the low 80s or high 70s, perfect for hiking, biking, horseback riding the 36.5-mile (58-km)   California Riding & Hiking Trail   that runs east-west across the park.

10. Death Valley National Park   (California)

Despite the intense summer heat, hundreds of people visited Death Valley this past July to have their picture snapped beside temperature signs reading 130°F.

Late fall is a much more reasonable time to visit the hottest spot in the Western hemisphere, when it’s safe to hike at midday and cool enough to camp without waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat.

Autumn also ushers in the park’s biggest annual event, the   Death Valley '49ers Encampment   (October 6-10). This living history fest marks its 75th anniversary this year with a costume contest, wheelbarrow race, pet parade, and other activities.
