The Elvis Tour of Memphis

Richard I'Anson / Getty Images

Elvis Presley is arguably the most famous and successful celebrity to come out of Memphis. He had 114 Billboard Top 40 hits and appeared in 31 feature films. To date, more than one billion Elvis albums have been sold worldwide.

In spite of this international fame, Elvis managed to touch his hometown in a personal way. Ask any native Memphian about Elvis, and most will have a story to tell. It seems that everybody has crossed paths with the King of Rock and Roll in some way or another. A big reason for that is that Elvis truly lived in Memphis. He enjoyed the city and experienced much that it had to offer. Come with me on a virtual tour of Elvis' Memphis and see where the King lived, worked, and played.

Lauderdale Courts

Teresa R. Simpson

185 Winchester Avenue Memphis, TN 38105

After Elvis and his parents moved to Memphis from Tupelo, Mississippi in 1948, they lived in a series of boarding houses and apartments. Their apartment in Lauderdale Courts, a low-income housing project, was the third such residence for the family. It is reported that they paid $35.00 per month in rent. They moved into the apartment in 1949 and lived their until 1952 when their income exceeded the maximum amount allowed. This apartment can now be rented for the night for fans who want to sleep where Elvis did.

Humes High School

659 North Manassas StreetMemphis, TN 38107

Elvis attended Humes High School from 1948 until 1953 when he graduated. He was the first in his family to finish high school. While in attendance at Humes, Elvis gave his first performance in front of a crowd. He sang and played guitar at a talent show in the school's auditorium. To his surprise and delight, he won the competition. Today, the original school building still stands but Humes is now a middle school.

706 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38103

In 1953, an 18 year old Elvis Presley walked into Sun Studio (it was called Memphis Recording Service at the time) with a cheap guitar and a dream. Nervously, he sang a demo song, failing to impress Sam Phillips. Elvis continued to hang around the studio, however, and in 1954, Sam Phillips asked him to sing again, backed by a band made up of Scotty Moore and Bill Black. After hours in the studio the small group had yet to record anything of any value. Just for fun, Elvis began playing around with an old blues song, "That's Alright, Mama." His rendition impressed Phillips and garnered him a recording contract.

Audubon Drive

1034 Audubon Drive Memphis, TN 38117

Due to the success of his first #1 hit, Heartbreak Hotel , Elvis was able to purchase a home for his family. He bought this house in 1956 for just over $29,000. The three Presleys lived there for just one year when an increasing need for privacy prompted Elvis to buy Graceland. The Audubon Drive house still stands today and has had eight owners since the Presleys lived there.

Coletta's Restaurant

1063 South Parkway EastMemphis, TN 38106

Coletta's Restaurant is a Memphis institution that first opened its doors in 1923. This Italian eatery claims to be the originator of the barbecue pizza. By many accounts, it was this very pizza that was Elvis' favorite. This is an interesting tidbit of information, as the King reportedly was not fond of barbecue, itself.

There are now two Coletta's locations in the Memphis area. It is the one on South Parkway that Elvis frequented.

Zippin Pippin

940 Early Maxwell BoulevardMemphis, TN 38104

The Zippin Pippin is one of the country's oldest wooden roller coasters. It was built in 1912 and was moved to its current location at the Mid-South Fairgrounds in 1923. In 1976, an amusement park called Libertyland was built around the coaster. Elvis, himself, loved the Zippin Pippin and would occasionally rent out the entire amusement park so that he could ride it without interruption. In fact, a sign posted at the coaster's entrance reads:

"The Zippin Pippin was Elvis Presley's favorite ride. The "King" rented Libertyland August 8, 1977 from 1:15 am to 7 am. to entertain a group of about 10 guests. Decked in a blue jumpsuit with black leather belt, huge belt buckle with turquoise studs and gold chains, the "King" rode the Zippin Pippin repeatedly during a two-hour period. He lost his belt buckle on the ride that morning, and it was found and returned the next day. Elvis's Libertyland rental became his last public appearance. He died August 16."

In 2005, Libertyland closed its gates, citing financial difficulties. The Zippin Pippin was finally sold to an amusement park in Wisconsin and is no longer in Memphis.

3734 Elvis Presley Boulevard Memphis, TN 38186

Graceland was the last of Elvis' Memphis homes. It is where he died and it is where his body was laid to rest.

Elvis bought the home in 1957 for $102,000 from Ruth Brown Moore. In April of that year, he, his parents, and his grandmother all moved into the mansion. After his mother's death in 1958, his father and his new wife lived at Graceland for a while. Priscilla Presley also lived there for a ten year span before and during her marriage to Elvis.

On August 16, 1977, Elvis was found dead on a bathroom floor inside Graceland, apparently due to an overdose of prescription drugs. Elvis was originally buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis but after someone attempted to steal his remains, his body was moved to the Meditation Garden at Graceland.

Today, Graceland is the most popular tourist attraction in Memphis, drawing hundreds of thousands of fans each year. It is one of the most visited homes in the United States, second only to the White House.

The Elvis Entourage VIP Tour: A Guide to Graceland, the Home of Elvis Presley

Author: Barry Pickard

When we set out to book a trip to Houston to attend a family member’s graduation, the plans quickly developed into a full blown road trip. Why spend just a week in Houston, when you can spend two weeks touring the American South by car?

My parents and mother-in-law would be joining Pamela and myself, so what a great opportunity to visit two highly significant places for them. My Mum has been an Elvis Presley fan since he swung his hips into action way back in 1956, so we made plans to visit Memphis. My Dad, on the other hand, has been interested in the John F Kennedy assassination since that shot rang out on a November afternoon in 1963, so we incorporated time in Dallas as well.

Back home, our itinerary planning skills went into overdrive, plotting out a packed four days in Memphis, that sprawling Tennessee city by the wide Mississippi River. Unsurprisingly, there is much to see and do in Memphis if you are fan of Elvis, and too much for just one blog post. So in this edition, I am just focusing on our trip to Graceland , and future blogs will cover the other attractions to be had.

Graceland

We soon realised that we had struck lucky, as Graceland had received a significant expansion and the new ‘ Elvis Presley’s Memphis’ entertainment complex was open ready for our visit in May. Great timing!

Elvis Presley’s Memphis’ entertainment complex

We had decided to book the Elvis Entourage VIP Tour (which cost $98.75 per person) online. The main bonus of this package is that you get front-of-the-line Mansion access. This cut waiting times down significantly. The Graceland Mansion is separate from the entertainment complex, and can only be accessed by bus from the complex, and our package allowed us to get taken to the mansion and back again without delay. The package also gives you a Keepsake Backstage Pass and access to the Exclusive VIP Exhibit. We found that this exhibit, however, was unimpressive, certainly compared to the rest of the exhibits.

Elvis Presley’s Memphis’ entertainment complex

The tour of the Graceland Mansion was fascinating, and you were led around by an interactive iPad that you were issued with. The tour included only the ground and basement floors of the house, which still gave you access to the living room, Elvis’ parents’ bedroom, the kitchen, the TV room (which was a crazy entertainment room with three TVs side by side), the fun pool room, and of course, the famous Jungle Room.

If you are enjoying this post, remember and subscribe to my mailing list to receive my latest blog posts.

Graceland

Obviously the Jungle Room was everyone’s favourite! Who wouldn’t want green carpet on the floors, walls and ceiling??

The Jungle Room

Outside, we visited the Trophy Building, which gave a fascinating insight into the life and times of Elvis through his personal mementos. My favourite displays were the homemade films that Elvis shot, showing fun times that he'd had at his sanctuary. We also had a chance to view Priscilla's wedding dress and Lisa Marie's cot.

Graceland

There was also the chance to visit Vernon’s (Elvis’ father) Office and the Racquetball Building.

Graceland

The tour of the mansion finishes off at the Meditation Garden. As the name suggests, this was a peaceful and touching resting place for Elvis and his family. Even though I wasn’t Elvis’ biggest fan, I couldn’t help but shed a little tear while standing at his grave. The whole Graceland experience was so well done and I really felt a connection with the man himself after immersing myself in all of the displays. After walking around Graceland, it would be hard not to feel some sort of emotion while paying respects at his shrine.

Meditation Garden, Graceland

The tour round the Graceland Mansion was certainly the highlight of the visit, but it is by no means the only thing to see. Of particular interest to me was the Presley Motors Automobile Museum. I love my classic cars, and this was a great chance to see the famous Pink Cadillac (which he eventually gifted to his mother Gladys), as well as the 1960 MG used by Elvis in Blue Hawaii, and perhaps his favourite car, the 1973 Stutz Blackhawk. As well as the cars, I was really impressed with the museum itself, as it was spacious and well laid out, giving all of his many cars the space to really shine.

The Pink Cadillac, Elvis Presley’s Memphis’ entertainment complex

There was also the Presley Cycles exhibit; the Private Presley: Elvis in the Army Exhibit; Icons: The Influence of Elvis Presley Exhibit; and the Mystery Train: The Sam Phillips Exhibit, which describes the story of the record producer that discovered Elvis.

Elvis Presley’s Memphis’ entertainment complex

Special mention should also be made to the Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum. I must have spent almost an hour studying this amazing collection of jumpsuits and memorabilia!

Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum

The visit was rounded off with a short walk across the carpark to the Elvis’ Jets Exhibit. On show was his 1958 Convair 880, named Lisa Marie, and his smaller Lockheed Jet Star. Full access is given to the Convair, which you walk through, checking out his living room, conference room and even his bed, complete with oversized seat belt!

Where to Stay

If you are looking to stay near Graceland, there are a couple of excellent choices, such as The Guest House at Graceland , and the Holiday Inn Express . There are also budget options, such as the Super 7 Inn , and the Comfort Inn Airport .

If you are looking to stay nearer the centre of Memphis, there are a number of luxury options, such as the MOXY Memphis Downtown , and the ARRIVE Memphis . As for a more budget option, you won't go far wrong with the Best Western Plus Gen X Inn , or the La Quinta by Wyndham Memphis Downtown .

As I am sure you will have gathered by now – there is a lot to do and see at Graceland! We spent five hours there, and anyone thinking of going, should set aside at least 4 hours. As well as the exhibits, the complex has good facilities and restaurant options, and lots of opportunities to buy Elvis merchandise.

Welcome to the Birthplace

The house where the legend was born.

In 1934, Vernon Presley borrowed $180 for materials to build a small frame house in East Tupelo. It was in this little house on January 8, 1935, that the King of Rock ‘n Roll was born.

Financially, times were hard on Vernon and Gladys. The family lived in the house about three years until the home was repossessed when Vernon could not repay the $180 loan.

The Presley family lived in other locations in Tupelo until Elvis was thirteen years old when they moved to Memphis. Vernon and Gladys worked various jobs while in Tupelo and moved several different times during the thirteen years they resided in Mississippi.

While in Tupelo, Elvis attended the Assembly of God Church with his family where he was first exposed to gospel music that influenced his musical style throughout his career.

It was in Tupelo that Elvis was exposed to bluesmen in the Shake Rag community where he lived for a time. His family also listened to country music radio programs from which Elvis drew influence.

Vernon Presley, Elvis’ father, with help from Jessie, his father and Vester, his brother, built this home in 1934 with $180 that Vernon Borrowed from his employer. It was in this humble, two room house lit by a single light bulb in each room that Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935. Elvis was one of two children born to Vernon and Gladys. Elvis’ identical twin, Jessie Garon, was stillborn.

The city of Tupelo bought the home and surrounding property in 1957. Elvis wanted a park for the neighborhood children and donated the proceeds from a 1957 concert at the Tupelo Fairgrounds to further cause. The property stands in its original location and has been restored to its original condition, decorated with period furniture, and is open to the public for tour.

Graceland tours: the best options & what to expect.

Advice for making the most of your time at Elvis' famous home.

The Best Graceland Tours

GATE

Andrea Zucker | Courtesy of Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau

When Elvis Presley was just 22 years old, he purchased Graceland – a 10,266-square-foot mansion that occupied a nearly 14-acre property in Memphis, Tennessee . After the singer's death in 1977, the executors of his estate found that the mansion's exorbitant operating costs proved difficult to maintain, so they decided to open Graceland for tours in 1982. Since then, more than 20 million people from around the world have visited the mansion – which now spans 17,552 square feet – and its surrounding Elvis-themed museums and shops. Read on to plan your Graceland visit.

What is Graceland?

Can you visit graceland without a tour, how much does it cost to tour graceland, graceland tour options, how long is the graceland tour, which graceland tour is best, graceland hours, what is the best time of year to visit graceland, can you stay overnight at graceland, tips for visiting, are there tours from nashville to graceland.

Graceland is a 120-acre institution dedicated to the life and music of Elvis Presley. The main draw is the mansion, but there's more to see than Elvis' former abode. Visitors can stop by Elvis Presley's Memphis, a 200,000-square-foot museum and entertainment complex. This building houses the Presley Motors Automobile Museum and a series of exhibits, such as "Elvis: Dressed to Rock," which features Elvis' performance outfits from 1969 to 1977.

The Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum, which displays the entertainer's gold and platinum records, his famous jumpsuits and movie memorabilia, can also be found here. Tourists will also have access to 10 interactive exhibits and games. Located throughout the complex, the interactive features include quizzes, a simulated golf cart ride and photo booths that put travelers on Elvis' movie posters and album covers. Finally, the complex houses two restaurants, a coffee shop, an ice cream parlor and a soundstage where tourists can watch Elvis' movies and attend live music performances.

After you learn all about the King, check out the Graceland Exhibition Center. This 80,000-square-foot venue features a variety of rotating museum exhibits, covering a variety of subjects, including motorcycles, Muhammad Ali and Van Gogh. The complex also boasts a food court, a bar and a separate, rentable event space.

No, you cannot visit Graceland without a tour. To access the site, you must purchase one of its ticket packages.

The cost per person varies depending on which tour experience you choose. Ticket packages that include access to the Graceland mansion start at $82 for adults and $46.50 for kids ages 5 to 10. Tickets can cost as much as $240 per person ages 2 and older for the "VIP" experiences, which offer access to exclusive areas, special keepsakes, meal vouchers and more.

elvis tour viaggi

There are multiple tour options for visiting Graceland.

  • Elvis Presley's Memphis + Planes Tour : This is the basic tour option. It grants visitors access to Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex and the Elvis' Custom Jets exhibit, but does not include access to the mansion. Tickets for this tour start at $49.75 for adults, with discounts for children.
  • Elvis Experience Tour : Tickets for this tour, which start at $82 per adult, include everything in the above tour, plus access to the mansion complete with an audio tour.
  • Elvis Entourage VIP : The Elvis Entourage VIP tour includes everything in both the other tour options, plus skip-the-line access to the mansion, a VIP shuttle to the mansion, access to a special exhibit, and a keepsake pass. Tickets start at $139 per person ages 5 and older.
  • Ultimate VIP Tour : The Ultimate VIP Tour includes everything in the Elvis Entourage VIP, plus a guided tour of the mansion with an experienced guide, access to a VIP lounge, a meal voucher to an on-site restaurant, an archives show and tell, the chance to buy exclusive souvenirs and a photo-op. Tickets for this experience start at $202 per person; children 2 and younger tour for free.
  • Inside the Graceland Archives UVIP Tour : If you're interested in the work done by the Graceland Archives Team, consider this tour, which includes everything in the Ultimate VIP Tour, in addition to a behind-the-scenes look at how the performer's most iconic costumes are cared for and preserved, how his more than 90,000 photos are cataloged and prepped for touring exhibitions, and more. Tickets for this package start at $217 per person; children 2 and younger tour for free.

The mansion tour will take about 90 minutes to complete. Those who decide to tour the rest of Graceland's offerings should budget at least 3.5 hours to explore.

Which Graceland experience you choose largely depends on your fascination with the King. Graceland visitors mention that even non-Elvis fans will enjoy the tour and the up-close look at the entertainer's famous lifestyle. Visitors also appreciate the audio tour narrated by John Stamos. They recommend upgrading your tour to one of the VIP options, saying it is well worth the additional cost.

Graceland is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m. (depending on the day of the week and time of year). It closes or has abbreviated hours on holidays. The last mansion tour begins at 4 or 5 p.m., depending on the day and time of year.

The best time to visit Graceland depends on what kind of experience you want. Travelers should check out Graceland's events calendar as the complex and its hotel, the Guest House at Graceland, host numerous weekend events, concerts and day trips to Elvis' hometown throughout the year. Visitors in the mood for a festive atmosphere will want to book a trip in late November, December or early January to see the estate's holiday lights display and decorations.

Yes, you can stay overnight at Graceland. The Guest House at Graceland sits within steps of the mansion and features 450 rooms with designs inspired by Graceland, as well as two restaurants, an outdoor pool and a 464-seat theater for movies and performances, among other amenities.

  • Visit the mansion after 2 p.m. to enjoy fewer crowds and shorter wait times, as this is the slowest time of day. (Multiple travelers note long wait times when arriving before this time). Check Graceland's website for exact opening times; there are certain days and holidays where hours vary.
  • You're welcome to bring cameras, but flash photography is not permitted.
  • Video cameras cannot be brought into the mansion, attractions or gift shops.
  • Note that two rooms in the basement of the mansion and the airplanes are not wheelchair accessible.
  • Bring a permanent marker to sign the famous Graceland wall before you leave.

Daryl Hall and Elvis Costello Make Double-Feature Dreams Come True at the Greek: Concert Review

That might be a thing to shout out as a request the next time these two veteran singers co-headline a tour together, rather than calling out for "Maneater" or "Pump It Up." It's not that they aren't standup guys, or that there is anything about their energy levels that suggests they need to take a load off. It's just that, when Hall and Costello played L.A.'s Greek Theater on Tuesday night, each of their sets really took off or peaked when they sat down for a spell. It was strictly by coincidence, mind you, that they mutually proved that benching oneself can be good for a performance..

In the case of Hall, who is closing out these co-headliner shows, the transformative moment came when he put down his electric guitar after the first six songs and settled in at the piano. This move marked the beginning of the "Philly soul" portion of the evening… rather obviously signalled when he began this second half by singing "I'm in a Philly Mood." The rest of us quickly got in that mood, too, and stayed there, as Hall laid off the earlier bangers and got balladically vibey with sure-fire slow-burn tunes like "Sara Smile."

In Costello's case, his turn at the piano was a short one, unlike Hall's extended foray at the keys. Normally, EC has Steve Nieve to meet all his keyboard needs. But, eight songs in, he took to the ebony-and-ivories himself to sing and play "A Face in the Crowd," the title song of a long-in-the-works stage musical, based on the same Budd Schulberg novel that was the basis for the classic 1957 Elia Kazan movie. Costello has often played this number in concert in recent years, but with a mounting of the musical finally set to take place in London this fall, maybe there's a reason to sing it with some extra urgency. It felt like his voice had been somewhat in warmup mode before then, but Costello belted this one with a clarion quality that made it sound as if he passionately believed the false promises in the lyrics.

From there, it was off to the races for Costello, if not necessarily immediately back to a standing position, as he moved over to a different chair to pick up a guitar and deliver an anxiously laid-back cover of Mose Allison's "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy." In Costello's stage zig-zagging, this was followed by a move to center stage, instrument-less, to deliver the arguably most powerful of all his Burt Bacharach co-writes, "I Still Have That Other Girl," accompanied elegantly by Nieve. Soon enough it was back to what we would know and love as rock ‘n' roll, with an invigoration that felt refueled by the detours just taken.

Having established that Hall and Costello both have a way with a mid-set wail, what kind of tour partners do they make?

Good ones, from a booking perspective. A Venn diagram would probably show that there aren't that many music fans that feel equally passionate about both performers, vastly different as the appeal of each is. But most devotees of each artist probably have some kind of affection for, and not much aversion to, the catalogs of the singer that is second fiddle in their minds… so this is effectively nearly doubling up the size of the potential audience without risking very many noticeable late arrivals or early walkouts. So, compliments to the chef, whoever that might be, who thought there'd be a certain complementarity that would work here.

This is not like the previous co-headlining tour Hall did with Todd Rundgren last year, where the latter performer joined him for a significant part of the show after doing the opening set. Nor is it like the Costello/Nick Lowe joint tour of last year, where no duets were guaranteed but you stood about a one-in-five chance of having Lowe stick around long enough to join Elvis for "Peace, Love and Understanding" or "Alison." The one obvious overlap these two have had in the past was Hall singing the harmony vocal on Costello's 1984 hit "The Only Flame in Town," a chemistry one or both of them apparently have zero interest in recreating on the road.

Costello has been adding "The Only Flame in Town" to his set more and more in these shows, though, as a soloist, and it was fortunate for the Greek audience that Tuesday was one of those nights where he saw fit to include it. The original recording from the ‘80s sounds dated and cloying now (truth be told, it was a little dated and cloying the day it came out). But at the heart of it is a brilliant composition that Costello has revived from time to time in concert as a slow, breathy ballad, getting more clearly in touch with the idea that, yep, true to its ironic title, it is a torch song. It's just as well that he didn't ask Hall to come out and find his way between those lyrical flares; for this purpose, it's fine that Costello is the only fireman in town.

Just before launching into "Only Flame," Costello acknowledged the 82 nd birthday of another one-time partner, Paul McCartney, by tagging a bit of the Beatles' "Yesterday" onto the beginning of the tune, without any notice or fanfare. (Fans might have hoped for a full reading of "Veronica" or one of his and McCartney's other ‘80s co-writes, but "Yesterday" works.) Of course, anyone who's been to more than a couple Costello shows knows he long preceded Kanye as the true king of interpolations. And so, besides adding a bit of Macca, Costello remained in top call-out form by augmenting "You Little Fool" with Gary Puckett's "Young Girl," "Alison" with the Supremes and Temptations' "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," and the teen-pregnancy anthem "Unwanted Number" with still more Supremes, in the form of "Love Child." The cleverest segue came during "Clubland," when Nieve's melodica solo made for a natural transition to a bit of the Specials' "Ghost Town," that instrument being a (plus a wee bit of "Insensatez").

For longtime fans who are used to certain hits coming at certain places, Costello is messing with heads a little by putting "Pump It Up" and "Watching the Detectives" right at the top of the show (a lot of folks were probably hearing Davey Faragher's opening bass riff out in the parking lot). And by moving up "Peace, Love and Understanding" from its traditional finale spot, the shows now end on a balladic note - albeit still a give-the-people-what-they-want note - with "Allison." Whether or not Costello always maintained the same affection for that last song that everybody else does, he seems to love it a lot more now that he has Charlie Sexton as an auxillary member of the Imposters, since Sexton is able to play the guitar part the intricate way it was performed on the original record. "Allison" might hit differently if he were closing out the night with it, instead of just leading into intermission, but it feels just right as a set-closer on this tour… leaving the audience feeling at intermission like the crowd with the most cake.

Costello gets to go to a lot of extremes in his repertoire on any given night, whether he's doing a two-and-a-half-hour show on his own or playing for a mere hour-and-20 as a leadup artist here. Hall doesn't have nearly that range in his catalog - no punky "No Actions" or Bacharach soliloquies here - but he does hit on enough variations of tone and style to make the set feel like it has some dynamics, before he satisfyingly settles into pure soul-man mode. At the Greek, he also eschewed hitting all the Hall and Oates greatest hits - leaving out, for instance, "Rich Girl" - in order to hit upon a few deep cuts and solo tracks. His set struck a finely tuned balance between delivering what most of the audience came for and offering a few surprises for his most faithful fans.

I'd like to say that Hall performed like a man unbound, now that he has declared that is done with Daryl Hall & John Oates as a duo once and for all. But if you follow his recent interviews, Hall kind of makes it sound like he always considered himself essentially a solo artist… if one who was duty-bound to make room for a sidekick to keep the branding alive. In any case, officially being solo once and for all doesn't mean he's about to get indulgent and start doing stuff off his ancient cult-favorite Robert Fripp collaboration (though some of us would have jumped up and down if he did). Even with his new solo album, "D" (which he helpfully held up a vinyl copy of), Hall is dedicated to making his current sound part of the H&O continuum.

The rarer cuts in the set included two from 1986's "Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" and one from 1993's "Soul Alone" (that one being the aforementioned statement-of-purpose song "I'm in a Philly Mood") and one H&O non-hit, 1977's worth-reviving "Foolish Pride." Even with this nice a selection of pinch-hitter tracks, the only song to have been minted within the last 30 years was the first encore, "Can't Say No to You," a pick from the new album that basically amounts to "yes, can do" following directly in the wake of "I Can't Go for That."

No one on hand was about to argue with the vintage nature of 11 out of 12 tunes. There was no reason to when Hall has assembled a band that locks so neatly into grooves that turn out to have a lot more to them live than you necessarily remember coming from the radio back in the day. There's a key link to the past here, besides Hall's own indelible voice - it's sax player Charles DeChant, still turning up in the same spots for solos that he did on the recordings of "Maneater" and "I Can't Go for That." He turned from sax man to flautist for the extended opening to "Sara Smile," a long instrumental R&B fanfare so warm and inviting that you wished the song would never stop getting started.
