There is the Champagne Bar at the very top of the Tower that serves champagne as well as other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages along with some light eats. Admire the Eiffel Tower

Around the base of the Eiffel Tower, you will find the beautiful Trocadéro Gardens . These gardens have soothing landscaping and highlight the wonders of their surroundings while softening them with greenery. There is even a pond near the base of the Eiffel Tower that reflects the glory of the Tower. Enjoy the ambiance as you look upon this man-made glory. Plan Your Eiffel Tower at Night Experience

The Eiffel Tower is open from 9:30 AM and stays open until 11:45 PM. Visit the Eiffel Tower between 5 PM and 11:45 PM for the nighttime experience.

By Bus: Bus numbers Buses 82, 42, 87, 69 go to the Eiffel Tower. From here on it is an 8 to 10-minute walk. 

By Metro: There are 3 metro stations near the Eiffel Tower: Trocadéro Station, Bir-Hakeim Station, and École-Militaire Station. From here you can walk to the Tower. 

By RER: Travel on Line ‘C’ of the Paris RER rail network. Get off at Champs de Mars station and from there, it is a 10-minute walk to the Eiffel Tower. 

By Car: There is no parking service available near the Tower. If you are driving down, you can park near the Parking Pullman Tour Eiffel which is approximately a 10-minute walk from the location. 

Madame Brasserie : Led by Michelin star chef Thierry Marx, it offers contemporary cuisine made with local produce with majestic views of the Seine and the Trocadero.

Le Jules Verne : The legendary restaurant on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower has served refined French cuisine to countless travelers and satisfied their quest for exquisite French food.

The Champagne Bar : Located at the very top of the Eiffel Tower, this place serves its patrons a range of snacks, and beverages you can enjoy along with a birds-eye view of Paris.

Macaroon Bar : Relish delicious macaroons on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower at the Macaroon Bar.

• Since it is centrally located near the Seine , you can walk along the river and experience the most romantic city in the world from a different vantage point.
• Learn about the history of the city and its monuments by going on an evening bus tour of the city.
• Enjoy some delicious French fare at one of the many eateries and pubs in the city. Au bon accueil , De la Tour , and Le P'tit Troquet , are some popular options nearby.

Tips for Visiting the Eiffel at Night

• Dress in warm clothes since it will be cold and windy at the top of the Tower all year. 
• The counter for tickets to the Eiffel Tower closes at 11:00 PM so plan accordingly.
• Restaurants in the Eiffel Tower have a dress code of casual, formal, or semi-formal. Sportswear is a definite no-no so please dress with this in mind while visiting the Eiffel Tower. 
• There are no lockers for luggage in the Eiffel Tower so please don’t carry too many bags or valuables.
• Toilets and baby care are available on the first and second floors but not at the top.

Where to See the Eiffel Tower Sparkle

The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris. I remember growing up, way before I had ever taken my first trip, I dreamt of going to the top of the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower puts on a light show every night. Paris has many different views and places to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night. This post was inspired by recent reader questions.

I highly recommend watching this at least once during your visit. The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the beginning of each hour from dusk until 1 a.m. The night’s last show is a bit different from all the others and goes faster with a little dance display of lights. It is worth seeing the final show if you are awake and have a good view of the Eiffel Tower.

Update: The Eiffel Tower now turns off before midnight to save energy; the last sparkle is at 11:45 and turns dark afterward. If you are visiting Paris for the first time, you won’t notice a difference, but those who are frequent visitors will see darkness in the city after it shuts off, which wasn’t there before.

After many trips to Paris, seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night never gets old. Here are the best spots to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle on your next trip. If there is one I missed, feel free to add your favorite spot below.

Top of the Eiffel Tower

You can see the Eiffel Tower sparkle when you are at the top. I have done this once with my niece when she was very young. You can see the Eiffel Tower lights up close, which is a different perspective than seeing it from far away. There are two tops of the Eiffel Tower. You will want to secure a ticket to the observation deck, which is an extra cost but worth the view of Paris. There is champagne to purchase from the vendors to celebrate special occasions like an anniversary or birthday.

I think this is fun to do once, but then you realize that there are a lot of other different angles to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle that may be better than being on top of the tower. I am sure this is a big engagement spot in Paris, as it can also be a romantic moment.

Where to See the Eiffel Tower Sparkle: Place du Trocadero

The Trocadero is one of the most iconic spots where you can see the Eiffel Tower sparkle. A metro line takes you directly to Trocadero, so you don’t have to walk far to get to this spot. It can be very crowded depending on the time of year, but this is a popular place to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle. I recommend getting here before sunset to get an excellent spot for the light show. Watch your belongings here, as it is a hot spot for pickpockets. There is a crêpe stand near the Eiffel Tower where you can get dessert. If you are bringing kids along, I find this to be the best way to keep them occupied while you are waiting for the light show.

Watch the Eiffel Tower Sparkle from The Champ de Mars

Located close to the metro stop école militaire, you can find the Champ de Mars. During my last Paris trip in October, we had a beautiful picnic on the Champ de Mars. My friend Whitney loves this spot the most out of all of them. You can grab a blanket, picnic, a bottle of wine, or champagne and enjoy the people-watching. This is one of the best spots to enjoy the sparkle and spend some extra time taking in the views of the Eiffel Tower. It gets tricky with the sunset timing, so keep this in mind, as it may not sparkle right as dusk begins. Just sit back and relax and enjoy!

Pont Alexandre III

Pont Alexandre III is one of my all-time favorite bridges in Paris. I love the architecture of the bridge and the street lamps. This bridge stands out from the rest of them for me. I love how the lanterns glow when the sun begins to set. It looks like they are lit up, but it is just the light from the sun. In the warmer months, you will find people with picnics on the Seine just below the bridge. Plenty of room to line up with other tourists and locals on this bridge to watch the Eiffel Tower light show.

A boat cruise on the Seine

If you can time the boat ride just right, you can catch the Eiffel Tower sparkle at sunset or later in the evening. There are several options for boat cruises down the Seine River. I wouldn’t recommend eating on board. I would take an hour’s cruise or Batobus to catch the Eiffel Tower. There are so many great restaurants in Paris, and I don’t think the food would compare. For a unique experience, if you have the budget, you can hire a private boat for a tour. I have not taken a cruise via Green River cruises, but I have heard great things!

Watch The Eiffel Tower Sparkle From Your Hotel Room.

I made a list of hotels with Eiffel Tower views here.  If you are visiting for the first time or celebrating something special, I would splurge on an upgrade to a view of the Eiffel Tower. There are budget hotels and 5-star luxury hotels that have amazing views. You can relax and enjoy the view from your room. This is one of the best possible experiences to see the Eiffel Tower.

Some of my favorite hotels include the Comtesse Hotel, which is more budget-friendly for an Eiffel Tower view. You can request a room that faces it or has a view of the side of the Eiffel Tower. These rooms are less expensive. I also love the Pavillon des Lettres view of the Eiffel Tower.

Hôtel Dame des Arts Rooftop Terrace

Don’t miss out on Hôtel Dame des Arts , located in the Latin Quarter. You can reserve a table here in advance for a maximum of two hours. Plan for sunset and the Eiffel Tower sparkle. The sun sets much earlier in the winter, but in the summer, it will be a later evening. This is a magical view of Paris and one of my favorites.

Watch the Eiffel Tower Spark from the Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe  closes at 10:30 pm, so you should be able to catch the sparkle even on the longer summer days. It can get crowded here, so claim your spot before the hour turns to glimpse the sparkle. This is also one of my favorite places to see the Eiffel Tower in the city, and the Arc de Triomphe has some of the best views of Paris. If you can’t make it at night, I recommend a hike to the top for the view. Book tickets in advance or grab a city pass to skip the long lines. This also gives you access to museums around the city.

See the Eiffel Tower Sparkle from Montmartre

Depending on the time of year, there are two great places to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle. In the winter, the trees are bare, and you can see a good view from just to the right of Sacre Coeur. That is when the photo was taken below. If you are in the warmer months, try the steps of Sacre Couer. There is a good chance you won’t be the only people there. The steps of Sacre Couer are where many people gather to hang out. *watch your belongings. This is one of the highest points to see the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Left Bank Where to See the Eiffel Tower Sparkle: Rue Saint Dominique

Located on the Left Bank of Paris, Rue Saint Dominique is filled with restaurants and shops. From here, you can get a great view of the Eiffel Tower; if you time it just right, you can see her sparkle. Le Recrutement Café is the perfect spot for a glass of wine, and Madame Eiffel is in the background. Depending on the time of day, you may have to fight for a seat.

See the Eiffel Tower Sparkle from the Rooftop of Printemps Department Store

This department store is in a great location in the city for a view of the Eiffel Tower. The alternative is just down the street at Galleries Lafayette. At the top of Printemps, there is a restaurant called Perruche , which serves cocktails and food. I have watched beautiful sunsets from the rooftops here.

Place de la Concorde

I love this romantic spot close to Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. It’s just at the end of the Champs Elysée on the way to the Tuileries. I also walked through here on the way to get engaged. My fiancé took me a long walk through Paris to get to Palais Royal.

Pont des Arts

One of my favorite bridges in Paris is the Pont des Arts, which used to be covered in love locks and has now been replaced with plexiglass. I always find a way to walk across it when I am in Paris, from the left bank to the right bank. It’s a perfect spot to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle.

Le Tout Paris Eiffel Tower Views

Le Tout Paris at the top of Cheval Blanc is an excellent spot for cocktails with an Eiffel Tower view. Arrive early before sunset to take in the extraordinary views of Paris and Pont Neuf from the rooftop. My visit in April was too cold for exterior tables but in the warmer months, the terrace will be filled with them. Take in the Eiffel Tower sparkle with a glass of champagne or cocktail. The prices are similar to The Hemingway Bar at The Ritz but with better views, in my opinion.

Pont de Bir-Hakeim

This is a less-known bridge in Paris, but it also gives excellent views of the Eiffel Tower. You will have fewer people to fight and enjoy the light show. This is a great spot for pictures of the Eiffel Tower. The bridge is just a quick walk from the Champ de Mars.

Avenue Des Camoëns : Where to See the Eiffel Tower Sparkle in the 16th Arrondissement

Avenue des Camoëns is worth discovering if you are close to the Eiffel Tower. I had felt it was a hidden spot for so many years, but Instagram has brought attention to it. It is a picture-perfect spot with a great view of the Eiffel Tower.

Montparnasse Tower

This is not always at the top of the mind for first-time visitors to Paris, but it is one of the highest points in Paris to see the Eiffel Tower. You can buy tickets online to this 360-degree above Paris. A rooftop terrace has beautiful Eiffel Tower views and a light display.

After climbing the illuminated Tower, you can settle down and watch the stunning light show from below.

The second best option is to visit the Tower twice but climb up only during the day. 

During your night visit, enjoy the illuminated Tower from far away, have dinner, and get back.

The best time to visit the Tower at night and see its lights sparkle is 10 pm.

Visiting Eiffel Tower at night

Every day after dark, the Eiffel Tower wears its golden gown of lights and enthralls thousands who land up from far and wide.

Eiffel Tower night timings

The Eiffel Tower opens at 9 am and closes at 11.45 pm.

The Tower and beacon lights are on every evening from dusk until 11.45 pm, and the Tower closes down at 12.45 am.

Which Eiffel Tower floor to climb

The second floor is the best spot to witness the Eiffel Tower and its beautifully lit structure at night.

From the 2nd floor, you get to enjoy both the ‘City of Lights’ and the upper and lower parts of the Tower for as long as you want. 

Numerous monoculars on the level will help you see Paris and its monuments in a new light. 

When does the ticket office close

Eiffel Tower ticket offices close 90 minutes before the Tower closes for the day. 

Buying the Tower tickets from the venue is a bad idea because of the long lines (pic below) at the ticket counter.

That’s why it is better to buy your night visit tickets online. 

Also, online ticket prices tend to be cheaper than tickets at the attraction.

Booking online also helps you get exclusive discounts and offers.

When you buy online, you can avoid the long queues at the ticket counters. 

The tickets for the attraction get sold out quickly, so booking early helps avoid last-minute disappointments.

Eiffel Tower night tickets

When you book Eiffel Tower tickets , you must select a time slot for your visit.

On the day of your visit, you must arrive at the attraction 30 minutes before the time on your ticket.

What to do at Eiffel Tower at night

Climbing the stairs when the iron structure is lit up from the inside is a unique experience. 

If you can’t take the stairs, don’t worry—the Tower elevators are just as much fun.

Small buffet outlets are located on the esplanade, first, and second floors of the Eiffel Tower, where the whole family can enjoy a meal.

If you prefer a fancy dinner at the Tower, check out the one-MICHELIN-starred restaurant Jules Verne.

Perched 125 meters (410 feet) above the ground, the restaurant offers scintillating views of the City of Lights. 

A ticket to the Eiffel Tower doesn’t guarantee entry into the Jules Verne restaurant, and you must  book a table  in advance. 

Once you have explored the second floor, you can try a flute of champagne at the Champagne Bar on the Summit (the third floor).

Eiffel Tower lights

Eiffel Tower’s night lights and light show have a long history. 

Even before electricity, the Iron Lady was lit up by gas.

The illuminations on the Tower solve two purposes – 

• It helps in safely operating the tourist attraction at night (it is open till beyond midnight)
• The lights and light show end up being yet another reason for tourists to visit at night 

The first projectors were installed on the Iron Lady on 31 December 1985, and they were an instant success. 

Around 330+ yellow-orange, powerful spotlights are integrated into the iron structure, outlining the Eiffel Tower’s frame.

Golden lights & white sparkles

The Tower lights and sparkles don’t have a specific starting time – they get triggered automatically by nightfall sensors. 

Once triggered, the Golden lights stay on till 1 am.

The sparkling lights are superimposed over the golden lights for 5 minutes at the beginning of each hour till 1 am.

Eiffel Tower’s beacon

As part of the  1889 Paris Exposition  itself, Gustave Eiffel installed spotlights to illuminate the Parisian monuments.

By 1947, the spotlights had become better many times over and were being used for air navigation. 

The current Eiffel Tower beacon was inaugurated in the year 2000 and is mostly symbolic.

The beacon comprises four motorized spotlights that create two beams with a range of 80 km (50 miles).

Is taking Eiffel Tower photos at night illegal?

Most tourists would have heard that there is an Eiffel Tower night law. 

Or that photography of the Tower at night is illegal. 

The answer is both yes and no. 

Let’s share some background before we answer whether taking photos of the Tower at night is illegal or not.

Pierre Bideau installed the Tower lights in 1985, and he still owns the copyright on the lights and the sparkling. 

According to European Union law, the copyright stays for 70 years after the death of the creator.

That’s why Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), which manages the Eiffel Tower, still maintains that the various illuminations are protected and hence require prior authorization . 

So technically, it is illegal to take pictures of the Tower after the lights come on. 

However, no tourist who has taken pictures for personal use or sharing on social media has been convicted till now. 

And thousands of tourists continue to break this rule every day.

Every year, some 7 million people visit the Eiffel Tower, making it the world's most popular monument operating as a paid tourist attraction. Whether you ride up in the elevator, climb the stairs to the top, or just take in the behemoth from the ground, a visit to one of the world's most iconic structures is obligatory for all first-time visitors to Paris—or two visits, really. Once in the daytime and then again at night.

During the evening light show, the iron edifice burst into what appears as golden, effervescent sparkles for five minutes at a time, captivating every tourist and local within eyesight. It's truly a wonder to behold and a  must-see nighttime attraction in Paris . Plus, since this view is better from outside of the Eiffel Tower, it's one of the best free things you can do in Paris .

When is the Light Show?

Every night from sundown to 1 a.m. at the beginning of each hour, the special illuminations burst into view on the horizon. This means that you have more options and earlier opportunities to see the show in the winter months than in the summer when the sun doesn't go down until after 9 p.m. (although the last show in summer is at 2 a.m. to give visitors one extra chance).

How Long Does the Light Show Last?

The display typically lasts a total of five minutes. The only exceptions is the finale at 2 a.m, which goes on for a hypnotic 10 minutes. It's also worth it to stay up for the last show of the night because the tower's usual orange-yellow lighting system is turned off. This offers an entirely different and considerably more dramatic display against the dark backdrop.

Where's the Best Place to See the Light Show? ​

​On a clear night, you can take in the spectacle from numerous places in the city. Riverside views are favored by most tourists. Pretty much anywhere along the Seine River  in central Paris between the Île de la Cité and the Pont d'Iéna offers good views of the sparkling iron structure. 

Pont Neuf Bridge

The Pont Neuf Bridge (Metro: Pont Neuf) is a good place to perch at the beginning of the hour to rest your feet and enjoy the spectacle. From this perspective, you can fully appreciate the sweeping, lighthouse-like motions of the tower's beacon. The beacon sends out two powerful, crisscrossing light beams whose reach extends to about 80 kilometers, or just under 50 miles.

Place du Trocadéro

Many tourists head over to the Place du Trocadéro   (Metro: Trocadéro) for much more dramatic, up-close impressions and photo ops of the tower in its scintillating nighttime persona. 

If you're planning to roam around for an evening walk that might last two to three hours in total, why not start with a more distant vantage of the light show at 9 or 10 p.m. sharp, then head over to Trocadéro for a much closer view? Two shows can be better than one, especially when appreciated from different angles and perspectives. 

Pont des Arts Bridge

The Pont des Arts Bridge is already one of the most famous places to cross the Seine thanks to the extensive view it offers of the Louvre, the riverfront, the Institut de France, and the Eiffel Tower soaring over them all. It isn't the closest bridge to the Eiffel Tower and you can definitely travel further downriver for a more up-close shot, but it is one of the most picturesque. The Eiffel Tower glittering over the landmarks of Paris makes for a romantic date night, as well as some unbeatable photography.

On a clear night, the distant tower glittering far off on the horizon can be a poetic sight from the artsy Montmarte neighborhood (Metro: Anvers). The real benefit? You can take in some of the finest panoramic views in Paris at the same time, seeing how some of the city's most recognizable places and monuments connect on the horizon. The downside? Since Montmarte isn't very close to the Eiffel Tower, the view may feel a bit distant.

Can You Take Pictures of the Eiffel Tower at Night?

Copyright laws in France protect the rights of an artist during their entire lifetime and for a number of years afterward. The Eiffel Tower itself became part of the public domain in 1993, so its likeness and design are free to photograph and use in any way—as long as it's daytime. The modern-day lighting system was first installed in 1985 and still falls under copyright protection in French law, so even something as benign as Instagramming your night shot of the illuminated Tower is technically illegal.

If the artist chose to, they could sue every single person posting pictures of the light show at the Eiffel Tower. In this case, the artist is the organization Sociéte d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel and—unsurprisingly—no one has been brought to court over the matter. Even though you're probably safe posting to your Facebook friends, you should probably ask for permission if you're using your photos for commercial purposes.

About the Eiffel Tower Lights

The Eiffel Tower's usual illuminations—the orange glow it has at night—are the brainchild of Pierre Bideau, a French engineer who developed the contemporary luminous system in 1985. His new system was inaugurated on December 31 of that year. Bideau produced a warm, intensely vibrant effect by placing orange-yellow sodium lamps onto 336 large projectors. 

The special projectors allow the Tower to be lit from within its structure: beams of light shoot upward from the bottom of the tower and radiate out, meaning that at all times of darkness, the Tower can be easily seen, even from as far as northeastern Paris and Montmartre. 

As for the hourly "light show" effects, which made their first appearance in 1999 to bring in the new millennium, they're the product of an astounding 20,000 lightbulbs. Each side of the tower has 5,000 of these special bulbs superimposed over the general lighting system, allowing for a magnificent, 360-degree sparkling effect. It was originally intended to be a temporary show to celebrate the new year, but in 2003 the government decided to make the light show a permanent feature.

Amazingly and despite their visual intensity, the "sparkler" lights consume very little energy. The city government invested in high-efficiency bulbs as part of its bid to reduce Paris' carbon footprint. In fact, the annual energy consumption of all the lights on the Eiffel Tower is about the same as one small studio apartment in Paris. Eco-conscious travelers need not worry about the spectacle being an energy guzzler.

Special Illuminations in Recent History

During special occasions—both joyous and somber—the Eiffel Tower changes up the usual golden glittery light show. Examples include holidays like Bastille Day in July or New Year's Eve , when the show is extra spectacular and accompanied by fireworks. Other annual traditions include adding a pink hue to the lights in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Some particularly memorable displays in recent history have included: 

• May 15–17, 2019: To celebrate its 130th anniversary, the Eiffel Tower produced a 12-minute laser show recapping its history and significance.
• November 4, 2016: The Eiffel Tower lights turned vibrant green to celebrate the official implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement and hope for a more sustainable future.
• June 13, 2016: In homage to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting, the Eiffel Tower turned every shade of the rainbow to show support for the LGBTQ+ community.
• November 2015: Commemorating the more than 100 victims of the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, the Eiffel Tower was lit in red, blue, and white, the colors of the French tricolor flag. 
• October to December 2009: To mark the Tower's 120th anniversary, light shows were on display every night for two months. For one of these shows, the Eiffel was dressed in a variety of vibrant colors, from purple to red and blue, which progressively crept up and down the tower in arty, hypnotic patterns. 
• 2008: The tower was emblazoned with blue and yellow lights to form the colors and motifs of the European flag, for the occasion of France assuming the presidency of the European Union.

One of the things I love about living in Paris is the Eiffel Tower. I wouldn’t have predicted that she, the Iron Lady, would become a favored monument, but in this year of uncertainty, seeing her peek over treetops, between buildings, from the bridges along the Seine, and bathing in the warm glow of her night beam have brought a certain comfort. And, of course, the shimmering lights that twinkle after dark every hour, on the hour, for five minutes thrill every time!

Of course, there are plenty of places in Paris that will offer a glimpse of her, but these nine spots guarantee unforgettable, postcard-perfect views. 1. place du trocadero, metro stop: trocadero lines 6 and 9.

Place du Trocadero offers picture-perfect views of the Eiffel Tower . Situated on the north side of the Seine directly across from the Eiffel Tower in Paris’s 16th arrondissement, it is a must-visit location. At Trocadero, there are lovely gardens, fountains, and a large parvis (forecourt) to view and photograph the Eiffel Tower.

One of the most breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris can be found in the Trocadéro Gardens. Positioned across the Seine River from the iconic landmark, this vantage point offers an unparalleled panoramic spectacle. The tower rises majestically against the Parisian skyline, its intricate lattice structure illuminated against the backdrop of the city lights.

As the sun sets, the tower begins to sparkle, casting a magical glow over the surrounding landscape. From the Trocadéro Gardens, visitors can capture the essence of Paris – a harmonious blend of history, romance, and architectural brilliance – all framed by the timeless silhouette of the Eiffel Tower. Since we are already close to the Eiffel Tower, wander a little further down the Seine to the Pont de Bir-Hakeim. This stunning bridge is another classic spot in Paris to get your postcard-perfect photos of the Eiffel Tower.

Stand on the pedestrian level of the bridge, or take the stairs down to Ile Aux Cygnes, where there are also plenty of sightings of the Eiffel Tower. For a truly unique view of the Eiffel Tower, ride Metro Line 6 across the Bir-Hakeim Bridge and catch a glimpse of the Iron Lady.

But the entire street is a thrill, as the Eiffel Tower peeks out from between cafes , bookstores, and is standing right before you at the end of the street! Metro stop: passy or trocadero line 6.

It took me a while to discover this hidden Paris gem to see and photograph the Eiffel Tower. It is a quiet, short, dead-end street. But that dead end? It stops at a gorgeous balcony with a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower. When I visited in the morning, there were few people, but choose your time wisely as it is a popular spot, especially for Instagrammers!

Be persistent. It can be a bit tricky to find. If you are on Boulevard Delessert, climb the stone staircase and you’ll arrive at the balcony.

9. Le Printemps Haussmann

Metro stop: havre-caumartin line 3.

Le Printemps Haussmann , one of the oldest department stores in Paris, has a fantastic 360-degree panoramic view of Paris. The department store is a high-end shopping experience behind a facade that is a designated historical monument and includes a brasserie under a stunning glass dome. You will definitely want to plan on perusing the various floors. Head to the 8th floor for stunning views of Paris and the Eiffel Tower.

The little secret at Printemps is that if you cross the street to Printemps L’Homme (the men’s store), there is another terrace that has the best views!

Find a spot to take the classic photos, or better still, take a seat at the Parisian restaurant , La Perruche, and relax while taking in the scenery. You might have to pinch yourself!

10. Arc De Triomphe De L’Etoile

11. Rue de L’Université

Rue de L’Université is a well-known cobbled street in the 7th arrondissement with typical Haussmann architecture which perfectly frames the Eiffel Tower view. Because the street is very close to Champ de Mars, where the Eiffel Tower is located, the tower will appear grand in your photos. 

To find this exact location, you’ll come across a dead-end on Rue de L’Université and Avenue de la Bourdonnais. Enter at this point, and you will see the Eiffel Tower is in clear sight.

The walk to Rue de l’Universite can also be combined with a visit to a small gated private garden located very close to the end of Square Rapp. From here you get the best view of the Eiffel Tower.

Pro Tips: Be aware of your belongings in the most crowded places, such as Place du Trocadero, for pickpockets. Also, don’t rush. Each of these nine places will take some time to discover and explore.

Going to the top of the Eiffel Tower is a quintessential bucket list item for anyone visiting Paris. However, long lines, crowded observation decks and sold-out tickets can make the excursion seem like more of a chore than the romantic experience it’s made out to be.

Don’t let these things deter you. With a little bit of planning and flexibility, you can have a truly magical trip to the Eiffel Tower summit.

This post will guide you through a perfect visit to the Eiffel Tower. We’ll break down how to get tickets (even if online tickets are sold out), explain the layout of the tower and ensure you know exactly what to expect when you arrive. We’ve filled this post with all of our best tips for reducing wait times, too, so you can have the most enjoyable time with the Iron Lady of Paris.

How to Avoid Lines at the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris. It was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World’s Fair. A cool 7 million people visit the Eiffel Tower annually, making it the most visited monument with an entrance fee in the world.

You can go inside the Eiffel Tower and visit three floors open to the public.

The first floor of the Eiffel Tower sits at 187 feet above ground. On this level you will find quick-service dining, gift shops and spacious, open-air seating with views overlooking Champ de Mars.

Also on the first floor is Madame Brasserie, which opened in June 2022. This restaurant is billed as contemporary cuisine with a rotating, seasonal menu. Reservations are recommended, but not required.

The second floor is the largest observation deck at the Eiffel Tower, showcasing 360-degree views of Paris. The second floor is 377 feet high, which is roughly 34 stories. Central Paris doesn’t have many other skyscrapers, so the views from here are uninterrupted and expansive.

On the second floor, there is a quick-service cafe and bar, macaron shop and gift shop. The Michelin-starred restaurant, Jules Verne, is also located on the second floor. Reservations for the restaurant are required and can be made online up to 90 days in advance.

The Eiffel Tower reaches 1,083 feet at its tallest point, but the highest publicly accessible floor sits just below that at 906 feet. The observation deck at the top of the Eiffel Tour offers a birds-eye view of the City of Lights.

The top of the Eiffel Tower comprises both indoor and outdoor (fenced-in) observation decks. There’s  a small bar at the top of the Eiffel Tower that sells Champagne, caviar and macarons. Also at the top of the Eiffel Tour is a restored replica of Gustave Eiffel’s office.

Each of the three public levels at the Eiffel Tower can be accessed by stairs and/or elevators (lifts).

Let’s start with stairs. You can take the stairs between the ground, first and second levels of the Eiffel Tower. You cannot take the stairs all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

From the ground to the first floor is 327 steps, and from the first floor to the second floor is 347 steps. That’s a total of 674 steps from the ground to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. That’s roughly the same as taking the stairs to the 35th floor of a building. It takes about 30 – 45 minutes to climb the stairs to the second floor at the Eiffel Tower.

If stairs don’t appeal to you, there are two primary elevators that run in both directions between the ground floor and the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. There is a separate, single elevator that runs between the second floor and the summit.

Navigating the first floor via elevator is a bit more complicated. You can only get to the first floor on the elevator by coming down from the second floor. There is not standard elevator access from the ground level to level one or from level one up to level two. If you’re taking the elevator, it’s best to visit the first floor last on your way down.

It’s also worth noting that the second floor and top floor of the Eiffel Tower actually have two floors each. Even if you take the lift to these floors, there is a single flight of stairs required to access the primary observation deck and amenities on that floor.

Lastly, restaurant patrons at either Madame Brasserie or Jules Verne can take a separate elevator directly to the restaurants. These restaurants have special check-in locations on the ground level at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

How much does it cost to visit the Eiffel Tower?

Tickets to the Eiffel Tower vary in price based on how high you go and how you get up there.

It costs 26.80€ to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower via the elevator. This requires taking one elevator from the ground floor to the 2nd floor, and then switching to a different elevator from the second floor to the summit.

If you want to visit the summit and save a bit of money, you can select the stairs and elevator option. For 20.40€, you can take the stairs from the base of the Eiffel Tower to the second floor (674 steps), and then take the elevator from the second floor to the summit.

You can save even more money by skipping the summit completely. It costs 17.10€ to visit the second floor of the Eiffel Tower via elevator and only 10,70€ if you take the stairs.

Ticket prices for all levels of the Eiffel Tower include access to that level and all lower levels. There are also reduced ticket prices for children and visitors with disabilities. Do note that individuals with reduced mobility, including wheelchairs, are unable to access to the summit.

How to Purchase Eiffel Tower Tickets

There are two main ways to purchase tickets to go inside the Eiffel Tower.

The first option is to buy Eiffel Tower tickets online in advance. These advance tickets are often called eTickets, priority tickets or skip the line tickets.  Advance tickets for the Eiffel Tower are limited and sell out very quickly, especially tickets for the summit.

If you purchase Eiffel Tower tickets in advance, you will need to select a specific date and time for your visit. Guests with advance eTickets will have access to an expedited security queue and will be able to skip the line at the Eiffel Tower ticket office.

You can also buy tickets for the Eiffel Tower on the day of your visit from the ticket offices located at the base of the tower. Same-day tickets are for immediate entry and will not have a return time. There are two ticket office locations, one near each of the two entrances.

Please note, same-day Eiffel Tour summit tickets are limited and can sell out midday if capacity is reached.

One final way to get a ticket to the top of the Eiffel Tower is to take a paid tour. Several tour companies, such as Tripadvisor or Viator , offer tours of the Eiffel Tower. These tours are more expensive than the standard ticket pricing, and include added commentary.

If you choose to do a paid tour, do your research first. Not all tours include summit access.

How to Get Advance Tickets to the Eiffel Tower

There are a limited number of advance tickets for the Eiffel Tower available for purchase each day. Each advance ticket is for a specific date and time, which you must select when purchasing the ticket and cannot be modified.

Advance tickets for the Eiffel Tower are released 60 days in advance. Summit tickets can sell out within a few days of being released, and time slots can become limited within hours. Second floor only tickets remain available for purchase much longer.

For the best chance of getting summit tickets and the best selection of entrance times, check for tickets 60 days before your visit. Tickets are usually released around 9 AM Paris local time, so that’s the best time to snag your ideal entrance time.

The price of an advance eTicket to the Eiffel Tower is the same as tickets purchased same-day at the ticket office.

Skip the Line Tickets for the Eiffel Tower

Advance eTickets for the Eiffel Tower are sometimes called “skip the line” tickets, but that’s not exactly accurate. There are no true “skip the line” tickets for the Eiffel Tower, just “skip some of the lines” tickets.

Guests with advance eTickets can go through expedited security and skip the queue at the ticket office. However, all guests regardless of ticket type, will have to wait in the same queue for the elevator to the summit and back.

For that reason, we suggest selecting an early morning time for your advance eTicket if possible. While advance tickets will save you time getting to the second floor, you’ll have to wait in lines for all subsequent elevators just like everyone else. These lines will be shortest early in the day.

If you want to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower at night, try selecting a time after 8 PM for the shortest evening lines.

Pros & Cons of Advance eTickets to the Eiffel Tower

Advance eTickets for the Eiffel Tower are appealing for two reasons: they guarantee entry and eliminate wait times at the ticket office. This is important because day-off tickets to the summit of the Eiffel Tower can sell out midday if they hit capacity.

For guests who want to visit the Eiffel Tower in the evening, advance tickets make this experience substantially more pleasant. There is no stress of summit tickets selling our or multi-hour queues at the ticket office.

The down side to advance tickets, though, is that it illuminates flexibility. Advance eTickets for the Eiffel Tower are for a specific date and time. If there are changes to your travel plans or the weather doesn’t cooperate, you’re out of luck.

All this to say, advance eTickets are overall good to have, but don’t panic if you can’t get them.

If you want to avoid long queues at the Eiffel Tower, the answer might surprise you. The trick isn’t getting advance eTickets; it’s simply arriving early.

While an advance eTicket will reduce wait times at security and the ticket office, arriving early is the best way to reduce wait times at all elevator queues. How early you need to arrive at the Eiffel Tower will vary based on when you visit.

If you’re visiting the Eiffel Tower on a weekday, we suggest arriving at the scheduled open time (typically 9 AM). If your schedule in Paris requires a weekend visit to the Eiffel Tower, it’s best to arrive 30-60 minutes before it opens.

The Eiffel Tower is the most crowded during the summer months of June, July and August. During these months, expect wait times to get longer, faster. Even if you arrive early and get to the summit quickly, you may still experience waits for descending elevators. The waits will still be shorter earlier in the day than later.

Weather can also impact wait times. If the weather is less than ideal, you can comfortably plan to arrive within the first hour of opening and still experience minimal waits. (NOTE: The tower doesn’t typically close for poor weather, but extreme weather can cause disruptions and occasional closures.)

In our personal experience, we arrived one hour after open on a cloudy Monday in June and barely waited in any lines. However, by the time we were leaving, lines for the elevator to the summit were already quite long.

As your Paris travel plans begin to take shape, start thinking about how your visit to the Eiffel Tower will fit into your itinerary.

In this section, we’ll breeze through some planning questions to help you pick the best month, day and time to visit the Eiffel Tower.

When is the Eiffel Tour Open?

The Eiffel Tower is open every day of the year except one — the Eiffel Tower is closed on Bastille Day on July 14. Unlike most museums in Paris that close on Tuesdays, the Eiffel Tower is open every day of the week.

On most days of the year, the Eiffel Tower opens at 9 AM. During parts of May and June it opens at 9:30 AM, so be sure to check the official hours before your visit.

What’s the best time to visit the Eiffel Tour?

The summer months and weekends are the most popular times at the Eiffel Tower. According to their website , the Eiffel Tower is the busiest from late June through early September. It’s more crowded on weekends versus weekdays, and it reaches its peak daily crowds between 11 AM – 5 PM.

If you’re looking to avoid some of the peak crowds, try targeting shoulder season in April/May and September/October. You do face a greater chance of poor weather during the spring and fall months, though. Be sure to set your expectations accordingly.

When considering specific days, we suggest visiting the Eiffel Tower on a Tuesday if possible. Most other museums are closed on Tuesdays, so it’s a great way to fill an otherwise quiet tourism day in the city. It’s also one of the least crowded days at the Eiffel Tower.

I personally believe that nothing beats Paris in the Fall. The weather is crisp, the foliage is delightful, and the fashion is on point. I would suggest visiting the Eiffel Tower on a Tuesday morning in early October for the ideal visit.

Should you go to the Eiffel Tower during the day or at night?

Day and night at the Eiffel Tower are two completely different experiences. Daytime at the Eiffel Tower will offer the clearest views of the city, but they don’t call Paris the City of Lights for nothing. The evening view from the top of the Eiffel Tower can be spectacular, too.

Personally, we would recommend daytime at the Eiffel Tower. Specifically, we recommend visiting in the early morning. The daylight allows you to find Paris landmarks around the city and appreciate the pops of color from the parks around town.

Of course the Eiffel Tower at night is magical, too. From sundown till 1 AM, the Eiffel Tower lights up with a sparkling light show. The best way to appreciate the glistening Eiffel Tower at night, though, is from the ground, not inside the tower.

If you want to see the Eiffel Tower at night, we suggest finding a spot at Trocadero Gardens at dusk. It has the best view of the tower and is the perfect place to relax after a long day in Paris.

How long does it take to visit the Eiffel Tower?

Depending on when you visit and how high up you go, a trip to the Eiffel Tower can take anywhere from 2 – 4 hours.

We suggest spending 30-60 minutes at the summit and another 30 minutes each on the second and first floors. If you’re planning on dining, we suggest eating on the first floor for the shortest waits. Lunch can take another 30-60 minutes.

In a perfect world, we’d spend two hours at the Eiffel Tower, but that does not account for wait times. Buffer in an extra 1-2 hours for queues at the ticket office and elevators.

To be safe, we would recommend blocking off 4-5 hours in your day for a leisurely visit to the Eiffel Tower. It might not take that long, but you don’t want to be rushing through it.

• Visit the Eiffel Tower from top to bottom . If you have a summit ticket, start by going all the way to the top and working your way down. This will help ensure you have the shortest waits and least crowded experience on each floor. It’s also the easiest way to access all of the floors via elevator.
• Take the stairs down from the second floor . The lines to take the elevator down can be long, but the waits for the stairs are usually low or non-existent. Even if you have an elevator ticket, you’re still allowed to take the stairs down if you choose. If you’re able to take the stairs, it’s a great way to cut out a few lines.
• Buy souvenirs and food on the first floor . There are souvenir shops on the first and second levels, and a coin press at the summit. The store on the first floor is the least crowded and has mostly the same items available as the upper floors, even the summit souvenir coin. Cafe lines are also much shorter on the first floor and the options are similar.
• Take advantage of imperfect weather. Don’t be deterred if it’s a little cloudy on the day you visit the Eiffel Tower. In fact, it will keep crowds down and might actually be better! We visited on a cloudy day and the views were still incredible.
• Buy your tickets from the ticket office near Entrance 2 . There are two entrances at the Eiffel Tower, each with a ticket office nearby. The ticket office near Entrance 1 (south pillar) is more crowded, because that’s the more popular entrance. Head to the ticket office near the eastern pillar by Entrance 2 for a shorter line.

Closing Thoughts

I’m not going to lie, I was not excited about visiting the Eiffel Tower. Reports of huge crowds and long lines made it sound awful. I also like my views of Paris to include the Eiffel Tower, which I wasn’t going to get from the Eiffel Tower.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by my Eiffel Tower experience. With an early arrival and weekday visit, the crowds were very low. This made the our visit low stress and super easy.

The open air observation deck at the summit feels like you’re at the top of the world. I’ve been to the top of a lot of tall buildings, but nothing quite compares to standing on that tiny observation deck at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

While I didn’t expect to love a Paris view without the Eiffel Tower in it, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t impressed. The sweeping views highlight the sheer size of the city of Paris and it’s fun to hunt down all the other icons.

The view from the second floor was way better than I expected, too. Some things (like Montmartre) were even more impressive from the second floor than from the top.

It was a real bucket-list moment that I didn’t expect to love, but did. I definitely don’t think I’d have loved it as much if I had to wait in line for 3 hours, though.

At the end of the day, I would say that a visit to the Eiffel Tower is absolutely worth it. It’s definitely something worth doing once in a lifetime in the City of Lights. I’m not sure I’ll do it again, but I’m glad I did it once.

While it attracts a million people on a yearly basis, it is a little known fact that clicking a picture of the Eiffel Tower at night is illegal. This strange copyright law was passed down years ago, however, after the installation of lights in 1985 gave rise to another law stating that any photo/video showing the monument with visible lights is a violation on its own. Not only the Tower but the Louvre’s pyramid in Paris too is also protected under a similar law. Since France doesn’t have general freedom of panorama, the photo of the Eiffel Tower at night can only be published with prior permission.

The  Eiffel Tower  is one of the most quintessentially romantic  spots to visit in Paris , but it’s about to get even more dreamy…literally. Vacation rental company HomeAway is giving guests a chance to make history as the first to ever spend the night in the world’s most iconic landmark.

Starting today, travelers can  apply online  to win an all-expense-paid trip that includes an overnight stay in the HomeAway Eiffel Tower Apartment during the UEFA EURO 2016 soccer tournament. The application includes answering the question: What would you do if the Eiffel Tower was all yours for a night?

Four lucky winners will be chosen to spend the night in a temporary 2,000 square-foot apartment that comes complete with bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and lounging area with stunning views. Each winner is allowed to bring up to five additional guests to experience the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“HomeAway is all about helping travelers make amazing vacation memories, so of course we thought of the Eiffel Tower as the ideal spot to make the most unforgettable vacation memory of all for some lucky travelers,” CEO and Co-Founder, Brian Sharples, told Travel + Leisure. “We're also making a bit of history, as no tourist has ever gotten to sleep inside before. P aris is full of iconic historic landmarks , so much so that it's hard to see them all in just one trip. From the Louvre to the Grand Palais, Parisian architecture is a feast for the senses. And no visit to the city would be complete without seeing the Eiffel Tower . The iron structure, now nearing 150 years old, is an iconic part of Paris's skyline and a defining piece of French culture. There's a reason this famous landmark is synonymous with Paris: it's tall, chic, and rich in history.

However, you might be surprised to learn that some Parisians weren't always so fond of this monument. The Eiffel Tower remains a bit of a mystery to those not well-versed in architectural history . 1. The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 to mark the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.

Built as part of the Paris Exposition (aka the World's Fair), more than 100 artists submitted designs , but the Eiffel et Compagnie architecture firm won.

2. Gustave Eiffel didn't actually design the tower.

It was one of the architect's structural engineers, Maurice Koechlin , who came up with the concept—although he doesn't often receive credit where credit's due.

3. Several hundred workers spent two years assembling the lattice tower.

The final design called for 18,000 pieces of puddle iron and an incredible 2.5 million rivets. Admittedly, that sounds a lot more difficult than the 3D Eiffel Tower puzzle we had as kids.

4. The plan was to tear it down after 20 years.

Quelle horreur! But indeed, it wasn't supposed to be permanent. However, city officials eventually had a change of heart and kept it standing since it served as a valuable radiotelegraph station.

5. The Tower played an important role in World War I.

The radio tower intercepted many enemy radio communications during the war. Later during WWII, it was almost demolished when Hitler ordered it to be destroyed, but the acting general refused to obey.

6. Until 1930, it was the tallest building in the world.

For 41 years it was the reigning champ at 1,050 feet tall, but the Chrysler Building in New York City surpassed it in 1930.

7. There are more than 40 replicas around the world.

This includes a half-scale version in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a full-scale replica in Tokyo, Japan. Fittingly, the one in Paris, Texas, has a cowboy hat on top.

8. The Eiffel Tower shrinks when it's cold outside.

Metal contracts when it freezes, so the tower shortens about six inches in total! It also sways two to three inches in the wind.

9. Almost 250 million people have visited it since it opened.

And approximately seven million visit per year , making it the most visited monument in the world. Each visitor can choose between taking the 1,665 steps to the top or using the elevator.

10. It gets a fresh coat of paint every seven years.

This is no easy feat: It requires 60 tons of paint , 1,500 brushes, and a team of 25 painters to give the Eiffel Tower a touch-up.

11. There's an apartment on the third floor.

It was originally created for Gustave Eiffel as private quarters for entertaining, but now the public can view it when they visit.

12. It takes 20,000 lightbulbs to make the tower sparkle every night.

And it takes 43 technicians to change them. That explains why the bulbs are only changed to different colors on very special occasions.

The Eiffel Tower , one of the most visited landmarks in the world today, was once the tallest structure ever built too. At the time of its completion in 1889, its 984 feet (or 300 meters) far surpassed the height of the reigning tallest structure, the Washington Monument, which rises 554.5 feet (or 169 meters). And though the Eiffel Tower only held the title of tallest for 41 years—the Chrysler Building in New York surpassed it in 1929—its cultural influence has only grown over time.

“It’s become the symbol of Paris, and of France as well,” says Savin Yeatman-Eiffel , a great-great-great-grandson of Gustave Eiffel, the engineer behind the tower. “There were very strong critics until the beginning of the 20th century, but there was never a lot of protest from normal Parisians. They would happily climb on top of it. It gradually became more and more part of the landscape, and it became very hard to imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower.”

The tower is visible throughout much of Paris.

Since Paris is such a low-slung city (there was a building height limit of about 115 feet, or 35 meters, in place until the 1960s), the Eiffel Tower can be spotted from almost anywhere in the French capital. Its wrought-iron lattice construction—which was actually a mathematical choice, not an aesthetic one—sticks out proudly along the skyline. “You can see it from a lot of places,” Yeatman-Eiffel adds. “It’s a love story between Parisians and the Eiffel Tower.”

Here, Yeatman-Eiffel, who is the vice president of the Association des Descendants de Gustave Eiffel , the documentarian behind Eiffel’s Race to the Top , and the curator of the Eiffel: Toujours Plus Haut exhibit, shares more about this iconic structure.

Where is the Eiffel Tower located?

The Eiffel Tower (or the Tour Eiffel in French) is located in the Champ de Mars, a big public park on the banks of the Seine River, in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. It’s not far from Musée du Quai Branly, Musée Rodin, and Musée d’Orsay. Right across the river, another large park called Jardins du Trocadéro offers more green space and a beautiful view of the structure.

What is the history of the construction of the Eiffel Tower?

The Eiffel Tower originated with a global desire to reach 1,000 feet. “There was a race for heights, a race to be the highest tower in the world that started at the beginning of the 19th century,” says Yeatman-Eiffel. “There were several projects [that aimed to be 1,000 feet] before, during, and after the Eiffel Tower that never got completed.”

French engineers decided to enter the “race” ahead of the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris. In years past, it had been customary that each fair “had a monument, an amazing construction that was supposed to be more impressive than the previous one,” Yeatman-Eiffel says. “And 1889 was a very special date for France because it was the centenary of the French Revolution of 1789. It was also the difficult period after the German beat Napoleon III. The republic wanted to show the world that the French were back, that it was a strong country, and that is had to be recognized.”

Over 100 projects were submitted to a national competition to design that year’s monument. The decision committee ultimately chose Eiffel’s design, and hence the tower was born.

Why was the Eiffel Tower controversial?

The Eiffel Tower was originally named the 300-Meter Tower.

Eiffel and his team, including Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, who drew up the original design, set out to dazzle the world with a 300-meter tower—which is what Eiffel called it. “Gustave Eiffel never called the Eiffel Tower ‘the Eiffel Tower,’” shares Yeatman-Eiffel. “He always called it the Tour de 300 Mètres , or the 300-Meter Tower. The press nicknamed it the Eiffel Tower, which was a bit condescending because they were associating his name with the tower to make it stand out as an engineer’s project.”

While the press was patronizing, artists and intellectuals were fully oppositional. “They accused the tower of being too American, not in the French taste, because it looked too modern, too industrial,” Yeatman-Eiffel explains. They argued that the giant metal structure would clash with the classical architecture that defined the city, like Notre-Dame , the Louvre , and the Palais Garnier. “They saw it as a provocation and an abomination,” he says. “They tried very hard to stop the project.” But Eiffel prevailed and built the tower using mostly his own money, which he recouped in ticket sales by the end of the 1889 World’s Fair.

What are the architectural elements of the Eiffel Tower?

Koechlin is said to have described the original plans for the Eiffel Tower as “a great pylon consisting of four lattice girders standing apart at the base and coming together at the top, joined together by metal trusses at regular intervals.” The final product reflects this early design, which was devised to withstand wind but also includes ornamental features added by architect Stephen Sauvestre in subsequent blueprints.

“The basis for constructing the tower was not an artistic choice—it was a mathematical equation to resist the wind pressure,” says Yeatman-Eiffel. “The weight is balanced between the four sections so that it doesn’t topple over. It’s just an engineer’s dream. There were some elements that were added by an architect to make it a bit more pleasing to the eye. The arches under the first floor are purely decorative. You don’t need them to keep the tower standing. They add beauty and give a sense of stability but are totally unnecessary.”

What is the Eiffel Tower made of?

The tower is made from iron.

The Eiffel Tower is made of wrought iron, which is why its nickname is Iron Lady. Altogether, 18,038 pieces of metal were connected with 2.5 million rivets to construct the tower. The metal frame weighs 7,300 tons, but the total weight of the tower, including its elevators, shops, and antennae, is 10,100 tons. “It’s like iron lace,” describes Yeatman-Eiffel. “The tower is quite light.”

How long was the Eiffel Tower supposed to stand?

Eiffel only had a 20-year permit for the Eiffel Tower, after which the land and the structure was to be returned to the city of Paris. During this two-decade span, critics tried to ensure the Eiffel Tower would be destroyed at the end of its lease, suggesting alternate development plans for the Champ de Mars. Meanwhile, Eiffel attempted to prevent the tower’s demise.

“He knew it was a very close call, and he did his best to find ways to protect the tower because he certainly knew it was his masterpiece and he had no desire to see it be torn down,” Yeatman-Eiffel shares. “He invited a lot of scientists to come to the tower and use it as a laboratory because of its specific stature 300 meters above ground. A lot of experiments could be done with wind pressure and falling objects.”

The tower has been used to commemorate different events over the years, including the 2024 Olympics.

Ultimately, the Eiffel Tower was saved because Eiffel met Captain Gustave Ferrié, who was studying the military applications of wireless transmission. The engineer suggested that Ferrié use the tower for his tests and even financed the entire operation. “Huge antennas were attached to the top of the tower, and it was a huge success,” Yeatman-Eiffel says. “Ferrié managed to contact Tunisia in 1907 and Canada in 1910. It was a very useful strategic element for the French during World War I, so Gustave Eiffel was allowed to extend the concession and keep the tower alive.”

What is the the Eiffel Tower used for?

Eventually, the Eiffel Tower antennae, which bring its current height to 1,083 feet (330 meters), began to transmit television waves too. “Nowadays, in addition to being among the most visited monuments in the world, with almost 7 million visitors each year, the Eiffel Tower is also the main antenna for the whole of the Paris region, with 10 million people getting their TV transmission from the Eiffel Tower,” reports Yeatman-Eiffel.

What is inside the Eiffel Tower?

On the ground floor, otherwise known as the Esplanade, there is an information desk, a casual buffet-style eatery, and souvenir shops. On the inside of the Eiffel Tower’s four legs, there are staircases and elevators that lead to the tourist attractions on all three levels. The tower features 1,665 steps, but only 674 of them are open to visitors, allowing them to ascend to the second floor on foot. The third floor is only accessible by elevator.

Can you go inside the Eiffel Tower?

Visitors can indeed go inside the Eiffel Tower. On the first floor, there is a contemporary restaurant called Madame Brasserie , a casual buffet-style eatery, souvenir shops, a terrace, and an interactive educational exhibit. On the second floor, there is a Michelin-starred restaurant called Le Jules Verne , a casual buffet-style eatery, souvenir shops, a Pierre Hermé macaron bar, and a sweeping observation deck that offers views of the Arc de Triomphe, Les Invalides, and more.

On the third floor, otherwise known as the Top, there are two observation decks (one indoor and one outdoor), as well as a Champagne bar and the apartment Eiffel once used to perform his scientific experiments and host guests like Thomas Edison. The space has been restored to its original condition and filled with wax models so visitors can imagine what it was like in 1889. “In the background, you can see Claire, my great-great-grandmother,” Yeatman-Eiffel says.

Authorities have evacuated the Eiffel Tower after a man was seen climbing the Paris landmark hours before the  Olympics Closing Ceremony Sunday.

The shirtless man was seen scaling the 1,083-foot tall tower in the afternoon. It's unclear where he began his ascent, but he was spotted just above the Olympic rings adorning the second section of the monument, just above the first viewing deck.

The Eiffel Tower was a centerpiece of the opening ceremony, with Celine Dion serenading the city from one of its viewing areas. The Tower is not expected to be part of the closing ceremony, which was set to begin at Stade de France in the Saint-Denis area around 9 p.m.

More than  30,000 police officers  have been deployed around Paris and beyond to watch over the last Olympic events and the closing ceremony Sunday.

France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said about 3,000 police officers will be mobilized around the Stade de France, and 20,000 police troops and other security personnel in Paris and the Saint-Denis area will be mobilized late into Sunday night to ensure safety on the last day of the Olympics.
