FFTC’s Top Field Trips in the Twin Cities

educational field trips mn

As both a homeschool mom and a public school mom, I adore field trips. I get to learn along with my kids and their friends. I’ve collected my top 10 homeschool field trips that I’ve experienced with my kids.

Whether field trips are associated with something being studied or just a way to switch up the monotony of the school weeks, the Twin Cities is full of options for out-of-the-classroom/out-of-the-home learning.

Field Trips to the Theatre

Autumn Ness in Matilda at Children's Theatre Co.

Children’s Theatre Company

South Minneapolis | Tuesday-Friday mornings, 10:30 am | Currently playing shows | $5-$10/student

Children’s Theatre Company has never disappointed me.  Not all the stories are ones I would necessarily choose, but I’ve always walked away grateful and amazed that I had the privilege to see the show. What makes Children’s Theatre so incredible is that every single show is taken seriously: Prime Time Shows and Student Matinees.

Usually after the student matinees, some of the actors come out and chit chat with the audience and answer any questions.  And again, they take every single question seriously.  Every single one.

CTC offers a study guide that you can find and print before the show. Therefore, you work through it before and after your visit with your students.

Classroom Field Trips : Classroom Teachers need to submit the online Ticket Request Form that is at the top of each Show’s field trip page.  Six weeks before the show CTC needs a confirmation of the number of students and adults attending.  Four weeks before the show, pay for the tickets. When you arrive, you will be greeted in  the ticket office lobby to give your final headcount and be welcomed to the show.

HomeSchool Field Trips:   You must be enrolled in the Homeschool Family Program.  The Homeschool Program tickets do not require a ticket minimum, but you MUST be enrolled in the Homeschool Family Program.  Students who are homeschooling or enrolled in virtual education are included in this program.  Apply Here

Nature-Based Field Trips

two females Bird Banding at Lowry Nature Center

Lowry Nature Center

Victoria in Southwest Metro | Mondays-Fridays | 2 hour programs, chosen by you from a variety of topics including history, ecology, nature play |

I have been doing field trips with my kids for 10 years now, and this was by far my favorite field trip to date. The naturalists who taught the programs were fascinating and catered to the ages of kids in our group.  Most importantly, the cost is determined by the size of the group, it’s one of the least expensive school trips we took (not counting the free ones).

The program was slow in a good way. We weren’t hurried from activity to activity. We discovered pieces of history, explored the nature preserve and played in the play area –even the big kids.

STEM Field Trips

Summer Camp

South Minneapolis | Schedule workshops M-F | Workshops centered around robotics, coding, technology, science and other STEM-themed activities | Price varies depending on the workshop chosen

Snapology designs its classes to teach STEM-based concepts through toys.  And let’s be honest, the toys used most often are LEGO.   This is a GREAT way to teach our kids technology.  And maybe some of the chaperones.

Again I need to admit that I did not go on the field trip with our homeschool co-op, but I did organize it. My kids have been here frequently on various occasions and are big fans of  this studio.

Setting up this field trip was one of the easiest I have ever set up.  You fill out the form at the bottom of the link and they will contact you and answer all your questions.

Active Field Trips

Minneapolis bouldering project.

North Minneapolis | Schedule climbs from 8 am-4 pm, M-F | Bouldering is rock climbing without ropes | Group rates vary starting at $10/student

My family members are 100% major fans of MBP. All the kids love it.  It’s interactive and the act of climbing encourages kids to learn problem-solving skills in a super fun way.  And it’s even good for a parent/teacher to learn how to instruct from a distance when someone asks for help (instead of getting all up in their business which is what I’m prone to do).

MBP takes safety precautions extremely seriously.  There is a three foot mat on the floor throughout the entire building and around the climbing structure. Before you are allowed to touch the climbing walls, staff teach you how to fall safely.  Therefore collecting safety waiver forms and getting chaperone ratios correct can be a little tricky on this one, but it’s completely worth it.

Your students will be gushing about this for years to come.

Minnesota State Capitol at dusk

History Field Trips

Minnesota state capitol.

St. Paul | Schedule tours M-F | Various Tours | $0-$8/student, minimum of 10 students

Confession Time (Again): While I have never brought a group of students to the Minnesota State Capitol, I have taken a tour myself when I was a student. I have heard other families endorse the state capitol tours. Personally, I loved the tour 30 years ago.  And now the Minnesota Historical Society has developed options to cater to what you are most interested in.

Most importantly, visitors interact with history, architecture, and governmental operations. Tours include options for preschoolers through high school seniors and are various lengths as well.

Possible tours include: “General Capitol Tour” | “Taking Issue, Making a Stand” | “Art Treasures in the Capitol” | “Rally Round the Flag Civil War Tour”

Free Field Trips

educational field trips mn

Minnesota Opera

Warehouse District, Minneapolis | Schedule Tours M-F | Behind the Scenes Tour | FREE

Even though it was one of the coldest days of January 2018, we had a field trip. And by golly, we were going to get there.  Because Minnesota Opera performs on the Ordway stage, it needs a permanent space for rehearsing, production development, and office work is located in Minneapolis’ Warehouse District. Besides being a fun stroll to take on its own, the Warehouse District is even more fun when you can pop in and explore the interior of one of the buildings.

Our tour guide took us to the top floor all the way to the basement showing us props and backdrop designing, costume creation, and marketing. And at the end of the tour, we were given a souvenir to remember our experience.  It was really fun and fascinating. The field trip opened the students’ eyes to the fact that opera is alive and well and interesting.

Serving Field Trips

Feed my starving children.

Warehouses in Coon Rapids, Eagan , Chanhassen | 3 Shifts during School Hours, M-F | Hand-pack meal packets for the malnourished around the world |  FREE

We return to Feed My Starving Children  every year.  Everyone who comes (beginning at age 5) is invited to pack nutritional packs that are distributed through partner organizations in areas of need.

Many public schools/organizations come to pack food knowing that FMSC will not preach at their students even though this is an unapologetically Christian-based service project.  FMSC welcomes all hands of any/no faith.  Every volunteer is needed and important. Keep in mind that FMSC strictly follows the adult-to-child ratios and health guidelines. Learn More Here.

Art Field Trips

Rum River Art Center

Rumriver Art Center

Anoka | M-F, by appointment | Art project workshops | $10-$20/student depending upon the project

We were eagerly welcomed with smiles when we arrived at Rumriver Art Center.  We had scheduled a mixed media project and went right to work. For 90 minutes we were led through an involved project that was easily completed (or almost completed) by the beginners and challenging enough for the seasoned artists to enjoy (it was maybe a bit simple, but still super fun for them).  The teachers are enthusiastic about teaching and about the creative process.

Field Trip Tours

kids playing giant chess at Union Depot

Union Depot

St. Paul | Schedule during the weekday | Tour | Group of 25 is $90 (breaks down to $3.60/person)

Truth be told, I haven’t taken a field trip to Union Depot, but I did bring a large group of families to the Union Depot. We learned about the history of the railroads in Minnesota and about the way Union Depot is used today.  The facility is large and beautiful with stories throughout the entire building.  There are hidden gems to look for and delightful stories to hear.  I love the Union Depot.  History at work in St. Paul.

Animal Field Trips

The new baby female, born Monday August 24th, is the 6th calf born to Clover and the 19th giraffe birth at Como Zoo in the last 22 years. The yet-to-be named female weighs 135 pounds and stands 5’ 8” tall. Como’s current herd currently consists of Clover, Daisy, Skeeter (father), Sky, and the new female.

St. Paul | Monday-Friday | Zoo Exploration and/or Zoo Education Class | $0-$4/person suggested donation

We had a great time exploring, learning, eating our lunches, and exploring a bit more before we had to get on the bus.  To schedule with a trip to the zoo, fill out the interest form and they will contact you.

These field trips offer a variety of educational experiences.  There are dozens upon dozens of field trip opportunities in the Twin Cities.  Be creative.  Reach out to different businesses to see if they give tours or if they are able to bring in programming for your classroom.  Never be afraid to ask.  The most obscure idea may be the best field  trip ever.

We believe students learn best when they: engage directly with nature, learn through discussions, think like a scientist, and follow the learning cycle. Eagle Bluff’s methodologies are based on those researched and trained through The BEETLES Project .

Our Educators

Our highly-trained, passionate outdoor educators provide programming that challenges students to think critically, step out of their comfort zone, and experience personal growth and connection with the natural world.  We get to know our students by name and work to build a culture of mutual respect. Additionally, all of our educators have have earned undergraduate degrees or higher and are trained and evaluated in behavior and risk management and outdoor teaching techniques.

“The students had a wonderful time!”

“And my team was pleased and impressed with how the Eagle Bluff staff appropriately challenged, and encouraged growth and leadership throughout the experience. Thanks again for a wonderful trip!” – Middle school teacher, Mankato, MN

Bus funding for environmental education field trips

Field trips can provide audiences of all ages a meaningful experience to see environmental processes in-person, learn about sustainability in action, and develop a closer connection with the natural world.

To overcome a common barrier to going on field trips, Hennepin County provides bus transportation to schools and organizations to take their groups on environmental field trips. Buses are provided through a contract Hennepin County has with a bus company. The county cannot reimburse for bus funding arranged through other companies.

Choosing a field trip location

The field trip locations and activities included on this page are pre-approved for bus transportation from Hennepin County. You can go to field trip sites not listed here, but you will have to provide more details about the field trip location and activities. Field trips must occur within the seven-county Twin Cities metro area.

To receive bus funding from the county:

  • Decide where you are going: Select a field trip location and activity from this page that lines up with the age group and interest of your audience and your educational goals.
  • Schedule your field trip: Work with the selected field trip site to schedule a date and time for your field trip. You must have your field trip scheduled before you apply for bus funding.
  • Plan your pre and post activities: Plan pre and post field trip activities you will do with your group to prepare them for the field trip and reinforce and enhance the learning at the field trip. For ideas, ask your field trip site contact if they have pre or post curriculum or see Hennepin County’s environmental activity guides .
  • Apply for a field trip bus: Complete the field trip bus transportation request at least two weeks prior to your scheduled field trip.

Guidelines and restrictions

  • Eligible organizations : Eligible groups and organizations include schools, nonprofit organizations, community groups, youth groups, congregations, watershed districts, environmental clubs, and cities located within Hennepin County.
  • Participants : Groups must have at least 25 participants ages 7 and above. Most participants must be Hennepin County residents.
  • Bus funding limits : Hennepin County will provide bus funding for each entity once per school year (defined as July through June). For school groups, this means the county will provide funding for one bus per class and/or grade level once per school year. For youth and adult groups, this means the group can receive one bus grant within the school year timeframe.
  • Cancellations : If you need to cancel, you must notify the Hennepin County environmental grant funding coordinator  72 hours before your scheduled field trip. If you don’t let us know you need to cancel at least 72 hours before your trip, the field trip may count as your one field trip for the school year.

Funding availability

Hennepin County offers busing for environmental field trips through a non-competitive process, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Bus funding for field trips is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis until funding for the year is allocated.

These field trips explore how people interact with the environment to get things we need like food, water and energy, how we can build infrastructure that protects the environment, and what actions we can take to be good stewards. Topics include farming and food systems, green building, renewable energy, and water infrastructure.

How to plan a school field trip

Kimberly Houston

Steps to planning a school field trip

  • Commit to early planning
  • Decide on your destination
  • Get buy-in from administrators
  • Contact the site
  • Arrange transportation
  • Plan food options
  • Recruit chaperones
  • Prepare students for the trip
  • Get permissions from parents

Students love field trips — especially since they break up the normal school routine — but they’re often stressful for the educators who have to plan them. Pulling off a successful school field trip requires an enormous amount of preparation and organization, but it all translates into a rewarding educational experience for participants that has a long-lasting, positive impact.

According to a study cited by the National Education Association , students who took part in school field trips had better grades and graduation rates from both high school and college. They also eventually earned a higher income than their counterparts who hadn’t participated in such trips as students.

The hands-on, experiential learning students get from school field trips delivers a lot of other benefits — like increased knowledge retention, a more developed sense of independence, access to other cultures that broaden students’ horizons, and the chance to bond with other students and create life-long memories.

And the planning part? It doesn’t have to be daunting if you start early. Plus, we’re making it a little easier by giving you nine tips for organizing a successful school field trip and 23 field trip ideas.

9 steps to planning a successful school field trip

1. commit to early planning.

The earlier you begin planning, the less stressed you’ll be if and when obstacles arise. There are a lot of details to iron out, such as

  • Researching and selecting a destination
  • Getting feedback from administrators, parents, and students on the destination
  • Planning the educational portion of the trip
  • Getting parental permissions
  • Arranging transportation
  • Figuring out a meal plan
  • Recruiting chaperones

Giving yourself a long lead time will help you tackle any unexpected snafus along the way.

2. Decide on your destination

Do some initial research and brainstorm potential school field trip destinations based on your learning objectives and curriculum goals. Consider location, cost of entry and parking, the ages and number of participants, the duration (e.g., a day-long excursion or an overnight trip), and any other key details that factor into the selection of an appropriate field trip destination.

Once you come up with a couple of good options, get feedback from colleagues, administrators, parents, and, if appropriate, the students themselves.

3. Get buy-in from administrators

Once you’ve decided on the ideal location for your field trip, be sure to get clearance from the appropriate administrators before you discuss trip details with students. You don’t want to get their hopes up if the administration rejects your carefully laid out plans!

Share the costs, the benefits of the trip for students, the days and times for the trip, and any other relevant details to help get the administration on board.

4. Contact the site

Once you have a “yes” from the powers that be, get in touch with the site and confirm that your preferred days and times are available. Make reservations if necessary, find out about group rate discounts and cancellation policies, pay any required deposits, and verify the site is accessible to those with disabilities. You can also share the number of children that will be in attendance and the special needs your students have, if any.

If it’s possible, conduct a site visit before the trip to get the lay of the land, locate the restrooms, note where students will be eating lunch, and any other relevant information it would be helpful to know before the field trip.

5. Arrange transportation

Now that you know where you’re going and when, it’s time to plan how you’re going to get there. You’ll likely travel by school bus, but if your group is smaller, you might get there in staff vehicles or even via public transportation. If you’re using school buses, you’ll need to reserve them in advance to be sure they’re available the day of your excursion, and you’ll have to fill out the required forms.

6. Plan food options

Of course, a day-long outing is going to require some serious planning, because no one wants a bunch of hungry kids on their hands!

There are a few options for food. Students can bring their own lunches, which can make things easier for everyone. Or you can make plans to eat at an onsite restaurant or cafeteria if one is available (which you may be able to reserve in advance).

Then there’s the option of eating at a restaurant, which might be the least palatable choice, given that kids might get unruly, you or they will have to handle money, and ordering could take a long time.

7. Recruit chaperones

Depending on the age of your students and the activities you’ve planned, it’s best to have a ratio of at least one adult to every 10 kids. If the students are younger, you may want more adults present.

You’ll need to recruit and confirm chaperones at least two to three weeks in advance, and be sure you have a list of alternates in case a chaperone has to drop out for any reason. Be clear with your chaperones that this is an educational trip and clearly share what you need them to do.

8. Prepare students (and parents) for the trip

Once all of your plans are in place and everyone’s excited, it will be time to share trip details with students and parents, and let them know what’s expected of them.

Hold an informational meeting for parents to discuss trip details, chaperone information, and rules and expectations regarding students.

Share trip rules with students and be clear about appropriate behavior. Let them know what the day’s itinerary looks like, what to bring, what to wear, and what not to bring (for example, anything of value that could get lost or stolen).

9. Get permissions from parents or guardians and automate the process where possible

Gathering permission slips from parents for school field trips is essential. Jotform can help simplify the process. If you want some tips to make this easier, check out our guide on how to collect online permission slips from parents .

We’ve also made it easy to automate your field trip planning with all the forms, tables, and templates you need for a successful school field trip:

  • Field trip interest form
  • Field trip permission form
  • Field trip approval request form
  • Field trip signup sheet
  • Field trip permission slip template

And last, it probably goes without saying that you should be prepared in case you run into any emergencies. Bring along an emergency or first aid kit, and keep a list of parent contact information on hand.

Now that you have your planning to-dos sorted, how about some field trip ideas?

23 field trip destination ideas

Here are a few destinations that would make ideal learning experiences for students, depending on your curriculum goals and objectives:

  • Botanical gardens
  • Nature centers, bird sanctuaries, and wildlife refuges
  • State and national parks and other natural attractions
  • County and city parks
  • Farms, orchards, greenhouses, and nurseries
  • Community gardens
  • Historic sites
  • Planetariums
  • Art galleries
  • Cultural centers
  • Radio and television stations
  • Newspaper or local publication offices
  • Police and/or fire stations
  • Animal shelters
  • Behind-the-scenes theater tours
  • State Capitol Building and/or county buildings
  • Local businesses
  • Colleges and universities

If an onsite field trip isn’t feasible, you can plan a virtual school field trip as an alternative. Many of the organizations above can provide this service via video, guest speakers, demonstrations, or other presentations. Our handy virtual field trip registration form can get you started.
