15 Best Things to Do in Hagen (Germany)

On the south bank of the Ruhr, Hagen is a city that mixes culture, industrial history and wide open parks. In fact Hagen is the greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, which has a lot to do with the hilly local landscape and the two water reservoirs on the Ruhr River.

One person who made an impression on Hagen was the industrialist and art patron Karl Ernst Osthaus. He commissioned the Art Nouveau luminary Henry van de Velde to build him a museum and villa, both of which are much-loved cultural attractions 100 years later. The 20th-century painter Emil Schumacher was born in Hagen, and a museum for his work opened in an eye-catching glass building in 2009. In Germany the city is famed for the FernUniversität, Germany’s only state-owned distance teaching university.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Hagen :

1. Hagen Open-Air Museum

Hagen Open-Air Museum

In the narrow Mäckingerbach Valley at the foothills of the Sauerland, an ensemble of 60 traditional workshops and factories has been reconstructed to preserve bygone crafts and trades.

In these old half-timbered houses you can watch brewers, blacksmiths, bakers, tanners, rope-makers and printers going about their work, using skills that have mostly been forgotten.

In the trip hammer workshop you can learn (and hear!) how farm tools were manufactured in the 18th century.

In the museum’s upper reaches the houses are configured around a village square with shops where you can buy handicrafts made at the museum, and a restaurant preparing traditional food.

The museum is only open in the summer, but on the first weekend of December it does have a superb Christmas market.

2. Osthaus Museum

Osthaus Museum

This attraction is in a building designed by Henry van de Velde, one of stars of the Art Nouveau movement.

It was intended as a museum for the collection of Hagen-born patron Karl Ernst Osthaus.

But when Osthaus passed away in the 1920s, the city of Essen outbid Hagen for his collection and the museum was empty until after the war.

Since then the Osthaus Museum has assembled its own array of art from the turn of the 20th century and the last few decades.

There are pieces by Kirchner, Otto Dix, Karl Albiker and Erich Heckel, and more recent German artists like Ansgar Nierhoff and Franziskus Wendels.

3. Emil Schumacher Museum

Emil Schumacher Museum

Right behind the Osthaus Museum and making up Hagen’s Kunstquartier (Art Quarter) is a museum for the Hagen-born 20th-century Abstract Expressionist Emil Schumacher.

The attraction opened in a modern glass construction in 2009 in time for the Ruhr’s stint as European Capital of Culture in 2010. Emil’s son Ulrich set up a foundation in 2001, and this is the source of most of the canvases, gouaches, ceramics and paintings on porcelain.

There are more than 500 works in all, from all of Schumacher’s creative phases.

The museum curates a lot of temporary exhibitions for both Emil Schumacher, other 20th-century artists, as well as cinema screenings and regular concerts for jazz and classical music.

4. Schloss Hohenlimburg

Schloss Hohenlimburg

Defending the entrance to the Lenne Valley is a hilltop castle dating back to the 1240. Schloss Hohenlimburg was in fact the political centre of the former county of Limburg until the start of the 19th century, and was caught up in constant fighting until the end of Thirty Years’ War in the 1600s.

Both the inner and outer bailey (Vorburg and Hauptburg) are intact, along with the keep, gatehouses, walls and residences and workshops from the 1500s to the 1700s.

One grisly exhibit is the mummified hand of a man.

It has been carbon-dated to 1546 and probably belonged to a murder victim.

The hand would most likely have been used within the castle signify a truce between two feuding parties.

5. Bunkermuseum Hagen

Bunkermuseum Hagen

As a railway town and major armaments manufacturer, Hagen was a target for bombing raids and almost three quarters of the city was razed in the war.

By the end of the war this Hochbunker (over-ground bunker) was one of the only buildings left standing.

It was a shelter for up to 3,000 people during air raids, but was also used as a warehouse for bombed-out shops and became accommodation for people without homes.

The museum has restored the basement of the bunker to its 1940s appearance.

At the time the ventilation system was state-of-the-art, and the bunker also had a medical and its own well, so people could be self-sufficient down here for weeks.

Among the Second World War curios on show are the tip of a V2 rocket and an intact V1.

6. Wasserschloss Werdringen

Wasserschloss Werdringen

West of Hagen by the left bank of the Ruhr is a moated castle in protected countryside.

That moat is a habitat for a rare diversity of amphibians, as well as Europe’s largest dragonfly species.

In the 13th century the castle was in the hands of the Archbishops of Cologne before being claimed by feuding noble families.

One skirmish during the Soest Feud in the 1400s saw the castle obliterated by a bombardment, and it was rebuilt as a Late Gothic palace.

The handsome building is now a museum for prehistory and early history.

In the galleries are human remains from the Mesolithic period (11,000 years old), primitive tools, ceramics, fossils from five different ages and a taxidermy of a mammoth, 3.7 metres high and 6.5 metres long.

7. Hohenhof

Hohenhof

Henry van de Velde also designed Karl Ernst Osthaus’ private home, which went up in the Gartenstadt Hohenhagen next to the Kunstquartier in 1908. Now open as a museum, the house is a Gesamtkunstwerk (total artwork), in which every item of furniture and fitting was conceived by van de Velde to complement his vision.

Even the cutlery and crockery were designed and produced especially for the villa.

Osthaus lived at the house until he passed away in 1921 and he had wanted the property to be the base for an art colony in Hagen.

8. Kaiser-Friedrich-Turm

Kaiser-Friedrich-Turm

At the highest point in Hagen, in the Haspe district is the first of three memorial towers in the city.

This structure was raised for the German Emperor Frederick III, who died in 1888, only 99 days into his rule.

As Crown Prince, Frederick III had distinguished himself in the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars in the 1860s and 1870s that helped bring about German Unification.

The sandstone tower was inaugurated in 1911 and replaced an earlier wooden one that was struck by lightning and burned down.

The 17-metre tower is 372 metres above sea level and there’s a six-kilometre walking trail linking this tower with the Eugen Richter Tower and Bismarck Tower, also on this list.

9. Lange Riege

Lange Riege

In the Eilpe district is a terrace of half-timbered houses from the 17th century, and the oldest worker settlement in Westphalia.

The Lange Riege was built for swordsmiths who had left the city of Solingen in the west following the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War.

They reached an agreement with Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg to forge blades in Hagen, and he built these workshops in the 1660s at his own expense.

By the 18th century the forges had a reputation for workmanship that went far beyond Hagen, and they contributed to the development of the city before industrialisation before demand waned in the 1800s.

10. Theater Hagen

Theater Hagen

Constructed in the Art Nouveau style in 1911, Hagen’s theatre is as popular as ever, attracting 180,000 people a year to its diverse programme of shows.

There’s comedy, musical theatre and drama, but the venue is also home to the Hagen Orchestra, and stages symphonies, chamber concerts, opera and ballet.

So in the space of a couple of nights there could be a performance of Tosca and a musical version of the Blues Brothers.

In the build-up to Christmas there are also family-friendly performances of fairytale stories.

And above the entrance, take a moment to appreciate the four statues of muses by the Expressionist sculptor Milly Steger.

11. Eugen-Richter-Turm

Eugen-Richter-Turm

Above Hagen’s Wehringhausen district is a tower memorial for the influential liberal politician Eugen Richter.

The Eugen-Richter-Turm is 23 metres tall and stands at elevation of 285 metres.

The Medieval-style tower was built in 1911 and 86 steps up the spiral stairway lead to a observation platform with a clear panorama of Hagen.

Richter represented the Hagen-Schwelm constituency in the Reichstag from 1874 to 1906 and the Prussian House of Representatives from 1869 to 1906. He was one of the leading critics of chancellor Otto von Bismarck.

12. Stadtgarten Hagen

Stadtgarten Hagen

A natural boundary to the south of Hagen is the Goldberg hill, rising to 266 metres and riddled with gold and silver mines from the 12th century onwards.

In 1884 the city purchased land just west of the hill as a recreation space for residents from all social strata.

The park was landscaped over the next few years and the lawns, groves and lake look much today as they did more than a hundred years ago.

On the west side, look for the Bismarckturm, built from Ruhr sandstone in 1900-01, to commemorate Otto von Bismarck shortly after he died in 1898. It is one of 173 Bismarck Towers still standing around Germany.

This memorial faces off against the Eugen-Richter-Turm on the other side of the valley.

13. Burg Altena

Burg Altena

About 20 minutes into the Sauerland range by car is one of Germany’s most beautiful mountain castles.

The castle was founded at the start of the 1100s by the Counts of Berg and by the end of the 14th century had become more of a palatial estate than a fortification.

Down the years the castle has housed a garrison, hospital and prison, while in 1914 one of building in the inner bailey became the first youth hostel in the world, still open today.

There are three museums on the property, one for metalwork (Märkische Schmiedemuseum) and another for hiking (Deutsches Wandermuseum). But the priority is the Museum der Grafschaft Mark, about the history of the surrounding County of Mark, spanning prehistory to the Middle Ages and painting a vivid picture of life at Burg Altena.

14. Zwieback Museum Hagen

Zwieback Museum Hagen

Hagen is the base for Brandt, a food brand famous in Germany for making Zwieback.

This is a crunchy baked product, similar to English rusk or Italian biscotti.

Zwieback (literally “twice-baked”) is pretty versatile and is often enjoyed at breakfast with butter and jam.

On Enneper Straße in the Haspe district Brandt has established a Zwieback museum in a half-timbered building dating back to 1750. In ten rooms you can learn everything there is to know about Zwieback, how it was invented and how it’s manufactured today.

There’s a factory shop next door, as well as a bistro operated by Brandt.

15. Hengsteysee and Harkortsee

Hengsteysee And Harkortsee

Two of the six water reservoir on the Ruhr act as a northern boundary between Hagen and neighbouring municipalities like Dortmund.

Hengsteysee and Harkortsee were dammed in 1929 and 1931 respectively.

And although they still perform important jobs like water purification, both lakes are much-loved recreation areas in summer.

Upriver, Hengsteysee has a 6.5-kilometre walking trail around its hilly, wooded banks, while the south shore is incorporated into the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route.

In summer the Freiherr vom Stein passenger boat does round trips on the lake and on the north shore you can rent pedal boats and rowboats.

Downstream, Harkortsee has its own boat, the Friedrich Harkort, and there are also boat rental facilities and a mini-golf course.

As it happened: Young Spaniard takes surprise breakaway victory on stage 12

Deutschland tour: jonathan milan scorches stage 3 bunch sprint for third win in four days.

Max Kanter second, Jordi Meeus third in Schwenningen

VILLINGENSCHWENNINGEN GERMANY AUGUST 24 Jonathan Milan of Italy and Team Lidl Trek Green Points Jersey celebrates at finish line as stage winner during the 39th Deutschland Tour 2024 Stage 3 a 2111km stage from Schwbisch Gmnd to VillingenSchwenningen UCIWT on August 24 2024 in VillingenSchwenningen Germany Photo by Christian KasparBartkeGetty Images

Lidl-Trek scored a fourth consecutive stage win on Saturday with Jonathan Milan earning the sprint victory in Schwenningen on stage 3 at the Deutschland Tour .

Race leader Mads Pedersen ushered his teammate Milan to the front of the bunch at the 1km banner and the Italian accelerated through the final righ-hand bend for an uncontested third victory in four days.

Max Kanter (Astana Qazaqstan) was second in the sprint and Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) took third.

Pedersen held on to the overall lead, 12 seconds in front of Tobais Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) in second overall, who also leads the young rider classification. Danny van Poppel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), who finished third overall last year, moved up to third overall, 19 seconds back.

"It was a super hard day. We started with this climb after around 35km and from there until now I was really on the limit always," Milan said. "The parcours was always up and down and we had a few attacks on the climbs after that first one. The guys in front, in the breakaway, were riding strongly, and chasing them in the last kilometers was pretty hard.

"The plan was to come to a sprint today but, of course, if one of us was feeling better than the other than we would adapt the situation but everything went perfectly. It means a lot to have Mads lead me out like that. He did one kilometer of lead out so it's even not enough to say he did a perfect job."

The longest stage of the five-day race at 212km, Saturday’s adventure was the queen stage with close to 3,000 metres of elevation gain over a series of small climbs, four of them categorised.

Five riders got away across the climbing in the first half of the race and gained as much as six minutes. Jørgen Nordhagen Visma-Lease a Bike), Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty), Marius Mayrhofer (Tudo Pro Cycling), and Mattéo Vercher (TotalEnergies) and Dawit Yemane (Team Bike Aid) saw their 4:40 advantage begin to dwindle.

Nordhagen secured more KOM points at the fourth climb at Albstadt, with 77km to go, while mountain classification leader Yemane called it a day on the front. Nordhagen would finish as the new mountains leader.

As a trio of intermediate sprints approached for the final 51km of the race, It was nearing the first sprint line in Schörzingen with 62km to go that Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) attacked from the peloton to take up the chase of the four riders ahead, who had a margin of 1:45. He tagged on with 36.5km to go, the peloton 1:32 back.

The first of two sprints in Schwenningen marked the start of an 8km finish circuit, completed two times before the checkered flag drops for the finish in the village. From the quintet, Buitrago took the sprint points but the five were only interested in holding off the peloton with 23km to race, the gap dipping below a minute for the first time.

With 15.7km to go, Vercher and Buitrago made a move to separate from the other three with a steady pace to create separation, but the move only lasted 4km as the race came back together and set up for a bunch sprint.

On the bell lap, Van Poppel took the 3 bonus seconds on offer for the final mid-race sprint ahead of Luke Lamperti (Soudal-QuickStep). Lidl-Trek just had an interest in another stage win, and they massed as the front, race leader Pedersen riding behind Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier and Milan third wheel.

3. Etappe Milan feiert dritten Sieg bei der Deutschland Tour

Stand: 25.08.2024 16:59 Uhr

Simon Geschke

Seinen letzten Auftritt beim wichtigsten deutschen Rennen hatte Simon Geschke.

11 Best Things to Do in Hagen, Germany (2023)

Hagen, located in the southern part of the Ruhr district just 10 miles south of Dortmund , is the biggest city in the state of Südwestfalen. Throughout history, the city has endured uprisings during the Ruhr Uprising in the 1920s, and survived heavy bombings during the Second World War where Hagen was completely destroyed by the UK and US airforces.

Fun fact: The famous German singer Nena was born in Hagen!

Hagen is a quiet and cozy alternative to the bigger cities like Essen or Düsseldorf , where you can enjoy cultural activities such as museums and old ruins, and take a walk in the surrounding nature.

Let’s check out the 12 best things you can do and see in Hagen this year!

11. Bismarckturm

Bismarckturm

Built in 1901, the Bismarckturm is one of several tower built after Otto von Bismarcks death to honor him. In the mid 00s, the tower closed due to renovation issues, and was not opened to the public again before 2014.

This particular tower is 24 metres high, and you’ll find it along the 6 km hiking trail Hagen Drei-Türme-Weg, where you can experience several historic ruins and towers along the way.

10. Johanniskirche

Johanniskirche

Located just 6 km away from Hagen in Luneburg, the Johanniskirche, also known as St. John’s Church, is the oldest Lutheran church in the city.

You will find it in the center of Luneburg with a Gothic Brick design. The Johanniskirche is one of the most important structures of Brick Gothic architecture design, and hence it has been well preserved over the years.

Dedicated to John the Baptist, the construction of the church began in the 1300s and has been through several repairs and rebuilding over the years.

The main attraction of this church is the organ, which is one of the most beautiful organs you will ever see.

9. Harkortturm

Harkortturm

The Harkortturm is an observation deck surrounded by amazing hiking trails. It is one of the best places to hang out with your friends or meet new people since the area is big. When you climb the tower, you will get to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the forest surrounding it. The adjoining forest is also an amazing location for mountain biking and trekking with great routes.

The overall environment is quite soothing and beautiful. It is definitely a great place to visit for a relaxing evening after a rough day.

8. Stadtmuseum Hagen

Stadtmuseum Hagen

The Stadtmuseum Hagen is one of the most important museums in the city. Located at the heart of the city, the museum displays a lot of rich and significant items. The items here mainly consist of objects that are related to the city, such as old coins, paintings, embroidery work, old electronic equipment, and many more.

One thing that stands out is an old Goggo 200 scooter in amazing condition. The wide variety of items in the museum makes it a very cool and interesting place to visit when you’re in the city.

7. Hohenlimburg Castle

Hohenlimburg Castle

The Hohenlimburg is a German hilltop castle that acted as a defensive structure for the Lenne Valley. Built in 1240, the Hohenlimburg Castle is a beautiful building with lots of history. It was a part of several feuds and wars that took place in the 1600s.

The castle is well preserved, and even today, the whole structure is completely intact. One unique thing you will find in this castle is a mummified hand that dates back to 1546.

Historians believe that the hand signified a truce between two parties that were fighting.

6. Bunker Hagen

Bunker Hagen

During the war, Hagen was a major railway town and armaments manufacture. And so, bombing raids targeted the city for its significance. When the war ended, the Hockbunker was the only structure that survived the bombing raids. More than 3,000 people took shelter here, and it’s one of the most well-known buildings in the city.

Today, this bunker is now a museum that houses several Second World War items like a V1 and V2 rocket. The basement still has its original appearance back from the 1940s, making it is a really cool place to check out.

5. Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal

The Kaiser-Wilhelm- Denkmal, also known as Emperor William Monument, is a popular site in Germany. It was built in the late 1890s to honor William I, who was the first German Emperor. The architect behind this monument was Bruno Schmitz, who finished the work with the help of a sculptor named Kaspar Von Zumbusch.

One of the main reasons this monument is so popular is because the site provides an amazing view of Porta Westfalica and Weser Hills. It is a great place to come and relax after a tiring tour.

4. Hengstey See

Hengsteyee

Hengsteyee is one of the six water reservoirs built on the Ruhr in 1929. Besides water purification, the reservoir also acts as an important boundary between Dortmund and Hagen. Today, it is one of the top tourist spots for people visiting the city since it’s an amazing recreational area during the summer months.

The Hengsteyee reservoir has over 6 km of hiking trail in its surrounding hilly banks, making it a great spot for people who are in the mood for some adventure.

Tourist Tip: A fun activity that you can do in the Hengsteyee is taking a ride on a passenger boat that makes a round trip on the Ruhr.

3. Museum Wasserschloss Werdringen

Museum Wasserschloss Werdringen

If the above two museums are not your type, then this next museum might be something you will love. Located on the banks of the Ruhr , Wasserschloss Werdringen is an old castle museum containing fossils from five different ages, remains of humans from the Mesolithic Period, ceramics, mammoth taxidermy, primitive tools, and many more.

Formerly, the castle was under the ownership of the Archbishops of Cologne during the 13th century. However, noble families claimed it in later years. After its obliteration in the 1400s during a feud, the castle was rebuilt as a Gothic palace. Today, the castle now stands as one of the most exciting museums in Germany.

2. Osthaus Museum Hagen

 Osthaus Museum Hagen

The Osthaus Museum Hagen is another museum that you will want to visit during your visit to Hagen. You will find this museum inside an awesome building designed by the famous Henry van de Velde of the Art Nouveau movement.

The purpose of this museum was to collect the items of Karl Ernst Osthaus. However, over the last few decades, there have been several items added to the museum.

Some of the items you will find in the Museum are pieces by Karl Albiker, Kirchner, Eric Heckel, Otto Dix, and many more.

1. Hagen Open-air Museum

Hagen Open-air Museum

The first place that you will want to check out in Hagen is the Hagen Open-air Museum located in Mäckingerbach Valley. It is such a special place that will surely blow your mind away. The Hagen Open-air Museum is a collection of 60 traditional factories and workshops reconstructed to preserve the trade and craft of the olden days.

The location is so rich in history and traditional culture; historical buffs will have a hard time putting that smile away.

It is worth noting that the museum is only open during the summer months. However, you will find an exciting Christmas market open during the first weekend of December.

Kevin Vermaerke 7th on final stage of Deutschland Tour

Vincent Bodet

Kevin Vermaerke rounded out the Deutschland Tour with seventh place on the fourth and final stage having gone clear in the closing kilometres with eight others, sprinting out the win in Saarbrücken. The stage featured an early break of five riders that spend the vast majority of the race out front, only being caught within 10 kilometres to go, but it wasn’t easy going behind. The peloton set a testing pace behind the five over the day’s rolling parcours. The speed caused the bunch to thin out during the stage, leaving a reduced group once the catch was made.

Late attacks ended up with Vermaerke’s small group going clear and fighting out the stage win. Whilst behind, Niklas Märkl and Bjoern Koerdt finished strongly to cross in 12th and 16th respectively. Thanks to the gap at the finish, Vermaerke slides into the top 10 on GC, moving one place ahead of teammate Sean Flynn who finishes 11th overall.

After the stage Vermaerke said: “There were a couple of ways it could have played out with a few climbs on the course today, but in the end it was quite a strong headwind and don’t think anybody really wanted to go all in and blow the race up, so it ended up quite a controlled day. In the last 50 kilometres there were three climbs in a row where we thought it might split but still the headwind was too strong. The guys worked well together to make sure we went into the climbs in a good spot regardless in case anything did happen. In the end it came down to the finishing circuit where there was a hard climb and last time up there the race really exploded. We were maybe a bit too far back going into the bottom but I was able to bridge across to a move that went over the top and that group of nine stayed away to the finish. I didn’t quite get it right in the sprint, it was a bit of a mess, but overall we kept the same GC position we started the morning with. We didn’t get a win this week or a top result we were aiming for but I think with quite a few young guys we learned a lot and got better every day. So we can all take a lot from this race and keep building from here.”

Alara Benlier | Live the World

November 23, 2022

Located in the North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany , Hagen is an important city in the Ruhr area . Just 15 km away from Dortmund , Hagen seems like a dull city before you get to see it! This cute city is where the Lenne and Volme rivers meet and have an important role in its industry even before the 15th century! The city's history dated way back to c.1200! But the city got its today's shape in the 19th century the mining of coal and the production of steel in the Ruhr Area. During the World War II , the city was bombed heavily. That's why it is hard to find any historical places but trust me, the city compensates with lots of other things! If you are wondering what you can do after visiting Dortmund, here is your guide for Hagen!

deutschland tour hagen

Osthaus Museum is an art museum which hosts Karl Ernst Osthaus' art collection! Its interior was designed by famous Henry van de Velde . Not only Osthaus, inside of this museum you will also see paintings by Christian Rohlfs , the most important collection of paintings by Emil Schumacher and many more. If you are into avant-garde art and architecture , you should check out this museum.

Hagen Open-air Museum or in German "LWL-Freilichtmuseum Hagen – Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Handwerk und Technik" located in the Hagen neighborhood of Selbecke south of Eilpe in the Mäckingerbach valley . In here you can find lots of half-timbered houses as well as crafts and trades workshop! This open-air museum offers you to gain skills in ropemaking, smithing, brewing, baking, tanning, printing, milling, papermaking and many more! If you are visiting here between March or April until October, you have to visit this museum!

Blätterhöhle cave is a place where the oldest fossils of modern people in Westphalia and the Ruhr were found. Some fossils date back 10,700 years B.C! The skeletons that have found here state that indigenous hunter-gatherers lived alongside farmers who migrated to Central Europe from the Near East! This cave was discovered in 2014 by archaeologists who excavated more than 450 skeletal fragments. Hagen is definitely "Cradle of Mankind" of Germany!

And lastly, Werdringen Castle! This haunted castle surrounded by water was built in the XIII century and was owned by the local feudal lords! It has a Neo-Gothic style and it has been used as a hotel in the middle of the XIX century! In here you can see r emains of ancient insects that lived in these places 318 million years ago! Pretty cool huh :D. If that is not enough, you can also check out the swords of the Bronze Age found at the foot of Mount Kaisberg too!

Interaktive Karte zeigt Anwohnern Sperrungen

Halteverbot in Egon-Reinert-Straße

Deutschland Tour kurbelt Tourismus an
