Why The Decemberists Always Felt Like 'Outliers As a Major Label Band'

Bright Eyes

Conor oberst, trending on billboard.

But Oberst and the band were able to iron out the issues and close 2022 with a kinetic and powerful se t at the Corona Capital festival inside Mexico City’s sprawling Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. From opening his set with anxious and frenzied rendition of his 2020 album opening “Dance and Song” to taking the guitar for a shaking and exhausting ride through “Old Soul Song,” Bright Eyes crew delivered a set that went as close to the edge of Oberst’s discontent as anyone dare venture.

Starting May 10, the 42-year-old Omaha native and his bandmates will perform at the famed Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, First Avenue in Minneapolis and the brand-new Salt Shed in Chicago on May 12, before heading south for a second chance in Houston where he will once again perform at the city’s famed White Oak Music Hall, almost exactly one year from the anniversary of the cancelled 2022 gig. It’s an audacious move, and while his camp is cautious not to overhype his return, it’s encouraging for many to see him face the past on his own terms.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Central. Purchase tickets  here .

Bright Eyes Announces Spring 2023 Tour

by Jacob Uitti February 13, 2023, 12:30 pm

Acclaimed rockers Bright Eyes have announced a limited 2023 spring tour.

Videos by American Songwriter

The dates begin on May 10 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and run through the month of May. The trek closes on May 21 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Along the way, the band will make stops in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Houston, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and more cities.

Tickets will go on sale to the public on Friday (February 17) at 10 a.m. CT. Fans can purchase tickets via the band’s website HERE .

The group, which began when frontman Conor Oberst was just 15 years old in 1995, has gone on to become a fan favorite with its emotive, emotional songs and Oberst’s signature vulnerable singing style.

Their most recent album is Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was , which dropped in 2020. For more on that album, read American Songwriter’s feature with Oberst in 2020 HERE .

“I didn’t know how to sing at all when I started,” Oberst told American Songwriter of the band’s beginnings. “There was obviously no formal training. I just think I went for it. I was wildly out of pitch and all that. As the years went on, I think I’ve become a better singer. I’m still not a great singer but I’ve applied the 10,000-hour rule, so I can get by. It’s actually hard for me to listen to those early recordings of myself.”

Bright Eyes’ new tour dates are below.

Given the lo-fi and intimate nature characterizing the music of Bright Eyes one might wonder how they can deliver an hour and half set without tiring the audience. This is truly a naive misconception. Their live performances are delivered with such potent emotional resonance and directness that the audience is left begging for more. At the Atlanta Tabernacle show during "The People's Key Tour" some fans were so ecstatic after the performance they nearly did a flip over the railing to grab a setlist.

The music of Bright Eyes also goes so much further than the lo-fi folk stigma attached to them. They have proven themselves to be dextrous and eclectic musicians crossing in to several disparate genres. "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" saw them channeling the synth-pop and dark wave sound championed by their contemporaries and fellow label mates The Faint. After all Conor Oberst was in the band Commander Venus with the group's lead singer Todd Fink well before the existence of either one of their current bands. Their 2007 album Casadaga takes a completely different approach stylistically to "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" and a turn production wise comparative to their early recordings. It is a lush Country album filled with well defined instrumentation, but juxtaposed by Oberst's signature cutting lyrics. The setlist of a Bright Eyes show is sure to have the stripped down folk ballads written on the hearts of every diehard fan, but it is not lacking in the "more fun" nevertheless sardonic pop hits like "Four Winds" and "Lover I Don't Have to Love".

Though the genre of emo has been triumphed, abused and often rejected by the very people to whom it was first applied, it seems without a doubt appropriately attributed to the music of Bright Eyes. These "emo" shows are particularly enjoyable to go to because the entire audience seems to mutually offer their souls as a sacrifice to the performing band. Practically the whole venue knew all the lyrics at the Bright Eyes show I was attending and some of the fans were so emotionally invested in the performance they started to tear their hair out during the song "Road to Joy".

Despite presiding stigmas attached to bands such as Bright Eyes it is safe to say there are no dull moments at their shows. Judging from their lyrics they may seem like a band who take themselves too serious, but these preconceived notions vanish upon seeing them. Oberst is constantly cracking jokes and engages the audience in witty banter. Band members Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott have their performance down to a science playing with amazing precision and feeling, making for an unforgettable show.

On their last tour, in support of 2011’s The People’s Key, Bright Eyes threw out their old rulebook; where previously they’d stick closely to new material and throw in the odd oldie here and there, they suddenly blew their formidable back catalogue wide open. With the core trio of Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott expanded to a seven-piece, they tore through sets that blended The People’s Key highlights with more or less equal representation for their genuinely classic albums; the moody Fevers and Mirrors, experimental Lifted and magnum opus I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning all present and correct.

As a frontman, Oberst continued to display real versatility, howling his way through ‘Road to Joy’ one minute and delivering a broken, barely-there exercise in poignancy on ‘Lua’ the next, whilst the live band - drawn largely form the Omaha music scene that considers Bright Eyes the jewel in its crown - provided stirring and diverse backing, with horns, keyboards and strings all covered in one form or another. It’s little wonder, then, that Oberst would routinely take anything up to fifteen minutes to introduce his fellow players during an extended, funk-driven jam, with some shows running only a little shy of three hours.

Perseverance Views 'Bright Angel'

bright eyes tour 2023

NASA's Perseverance rover was traveling in the channel of an ancient river, Neretva Vallis, when it captured this view of an area of scientific interest nicknamed "Bright Angel" – the light-toned area in the distance at right. The rover used one of its navigation cameras on June 6, 2024, the 1,172nd Martian day, or sol, of the mission to take the image.

Bright Angel is at the base of the northern wall of the river channel, which fed Jezero Crater with fresh water billions of years ago. The area features light-toned rocky outcrops that may represent either ancient sediment that later filled the channel or possibly much older rock that was subsequently exposed by river erosion.

A key objective for Perseverance's mission on Mars is astrobiology , including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet's geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust).

Subsequent NASA missions, in cooperation with ESA (European Space Agency), would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these sealed samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA's Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed for the agency by Caltech, built and manages operations of the Perseverance rover.

Ixigo IPO Garners Significant Demand Across Investor Categories — India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

June 12th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

Ixigo's IPO closed to a blockbuster subscription window. The online travel company's performance at the Indian bourses is indicative of the positive sentiments that prevail in India with regard to the travel industry.

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

The IPO for online travel agency Ixigo saw demand for the shares it offered dramatically exceed the number of shares offered this week.

Investors applied for about 98 times the number of shares in Ixigo’s initial public offering, according to the Indian stock exchange BSE on Wednesday. Demand was strong across all types of investors, including institutional ones and ordinary individuals.

On Friday, the company raised INR 3.33 billion ($40 million) from anchor investors, who are institutional investors invited to subscribe to shares ahead of the IPO opening to the general public.

With the share subscription now over, the allotment of shares is expected to be finalised by Wednesday. The IPO listing is tentatively scheduled for June 18.

The IPO’s full capital infusion into the company will be $89 million, including anchor investors, retail investors, and others.

IPO Timing: It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for Ixigo, which initially filed for an IPO in 2021 and received the green light from regulators the same year.

“Most tech-listed names were trading below their IPO price in 2022,” Ixigo chairman, managing director and group CEO Aloke Bajpai told Skift in an exclusive first interview. “It was not the ideal environment for us to launch an IPO.”

Fast forward to mid-February this year, and Ixigo decided to take another crack at the IPO, buoyed by two consecutive years of profitability. This time around, the company set its sights on raising a more modest $89 million, a far cry from the $192 million it had originally planned to raise.

Rajnish Kumar, director and group co-CEO of Ixigo told Skift that the company’s financial performance has been an important driver of its renewed plans for an IPO.

“The company reported consistent profitability, with fiscal 2023 seeing nine months of profits and fiscal 2024 showing even stronger financial health,” Kumar said. “This allowed us to reduce the primary portion of fundraising. We didn’t need that much money.”

Plans for IPO Proceeds: According to the company’s prospect, as accessed by Skift , Ixigo will allocate INR 450 million($5.4 million) towards its working capital requirements. The company will invest INR 258 million ($3.1 million) in cloud infrastructure and technology, while it will also use proceeds to drive inorganic growth through acquisitions and strategic initiatives.

According to Moscow City Tourism chairman Evgeny Kozlov, the MICE Ambassadors program is focused on India, as the country is a priority region for the city. “Our objective extends beyond simply boosting the influx of business travelers from India to Moscow; we aim to elevate the standard of services we provide and effectively exhibit our capabilities.”

India is a key emerging source market for Russia, becoming one of the leading countries in terms of tourist influx to Moscow. According to a statement from Moscow City Tourism, business travel is a key driver for Indian visitors. In 2023, 60,000 Indian tourists visited Moscow.

Russia is currently working with India on a bilateral agreement to allow visa-free group tourist exchanges between the countries. The agreement is expected to be signed by the end of the year.

Species Spotlight: Guam Kingfisher (Sihek)

A sihek stand on a branch. It is cinnamon orange with metallic blue wings and tail. It's beak is large and black and it has a metallic blue stripe retreating from its eye like mascara.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, a law that has been a powerful catalyst for conservation of America’s most treasured fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats. In the Pacific Region, our Tribes, state and federal agencies, and partners have joined with our dedicated staff to be the driving force behind the successes we share and the strength ensuring we can address the challenges ahead. Celebrate this milestone with us in this collection of stories as we reflect on past successes, assess current challenges, and envision an equally bright future for the next 50 years and beyond.

A cinnamon-brown bird with bright blue wings and tail sits on a branch. It has a long, heavy bill.

Scientific Name: Todiramphus cinnamominus Chamorro Name: Sihek Common name: Guam Kingfisher Status: Extinct in the Wild

The sihek is endemic to the forest of Guam. Visually striking in appearance, its head and chest is adorned with cinnamon-orange feathers, while bright blue metallic feathers cover its wings and tail. A black streak dashes across its eyes towards the back of its head. Once found throughout Guam, sihek was declared extinct in the wild around 1988 due to the accidental introduction of the predatory brown treesnake ( Boiga irregularis ).

In 1983, the Guam Bird Rescue Project was initiated by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums in response to the decline of Guam’s native birds. Twenty-nine sihek were brought into captivity by 1988. Today an estimated 152 sihek are being cared for in 25 zoos in the continental United States and at a Guam Department of Agriculture facility.

In Chamorro Culture

Chamorro stories were passed down orally throughout the centuries. Some stories were cautionary tales that warned people of the dangers that came with being greedy or prideful. Other stories inspired people to embrace their imperfections and dare to be better. However, almost all Chamorro stories were inspired by the land, fish, and animals that surrounded them.

One Chamorro story recalls Guam’s forest being filled with the songs of forest birds. Among that chorus was the song of the sihek, that was so loud that it could be heard from great distances and those who followed it would get lost in the forest. According to the story, the sihek was once a village woman who wore an orange handkerchief and a blue dress with a white apron. She always loved to talk loudly and cause trouble for the other villagers. However, one day a taotaomo’na (ancestral spirit) became angry with her and turned her into the first sihek, with her clothes becoming the bright feathers of the bird. From that day forward, the unhappy bird would call loudly when people were near.

Habitat and Range

Sihek could be found across the island’s different ecosystems, from limestone forest to coastal lowlands, favoring to nest within the woodlands due to its rich food source and mature trees for nest sites. Records of distribution suggest sihek maintained year-round territories. The Micronesian kingfisher ( Todiramphus reichenbachii ), a genetic relative of sihek, demonstrates an average territory size of 20 acres with fledglings observed establishing new territories approximately 4,500 feet from their original homes.

A sihek stand on a branch in a cage. It is cinnamon orange with metallic blue wings and tail. It's beak is large and black and it has a metallic blue stripe retreating from its eye like mascara.

Diet and Life Cycle

Sihek have a long, heavy bill which indicates its predatory feeding behavior, as it feeds entirely on animal prey including skinks, geckos, spiders, beetles, and land crabs. They are a “sit and wait predator” that perch motionless on exposed branches and swoops down to capture prey off the ground with their bill.

Sihek are monogamous birds that lay one or two eggs per nest. They make their nests in the trunks of soft or rotten trees where both parents will take turns incubating the eggs. Incubation and nestling periods for sihek in the wild are currently unknown, however, in captivity it can average anywhere between 22 to 33 days.

While there is little information about the lifespan of sihek in the wild, they have been known to live up to 15 to 20 years in captivity.

Threats to the Species

Sihek, like almost all of Guam’s native birds, faced an extinction crisis after the accidental introduction of the brown treesnake.

Native to Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, and Australia, the injurious brown treesnake was first reported during the 1950s. It is widely believed that they were stowaways on cargo ships or military transports. They range in color from yellow to dark brown, have wide heads, large cat-like eyes, are venomous, nocturnal, and can grow up to 9-feet in length. On average brown treesnakes can live up to 13-years in the wild and can lay up to 12 eggs, twice per year. They primarily prey upon birds, lizards, other reptiles, and small mammals such as rats and mice.

With no natural predators on Guam, the brown treesnake is responsible for the extinction of nine of 13 native forest birds, several species of lizards, and a frequent cause of electrical power outages as they often get into transformers and electrical boxes.

Other threats to sihek likely included predation by feral cats, rats, and monitor lizards, human harassment, contaminants, and competition with invasive birds.

Reason for Hope

On April 4, 2023, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service finalized an experimental population designation of sihek on Palmyra Atoll. This allows for the introduction of captive reared sihek to Palmyra Atoll. Under section 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act, the experimental designation allows for the release of the at-risk species to further its conservation. Sihek fledglings will be brought to Palmyra Atoll, held in aviaries for up to a month to acclimatize to the site, and released. Palmyra Atoll is co-managed by The Nature Conservancy and the Service.

Sihek have been extinct from the wild for more than 30 years and there is much scientists don’t know about how sihek behave in the wild. The experimental population on Palmyra Atoll would allow scientist to monitor and evaluate sihek in the wild, refining techniques for future releases, with the ultimate goal of releasing sihek on Guam once the brown treesnake population can be controlled effectively. The experimental population has the potential to significantly increase the worldwide population of sihek.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY

In the 18 months after Taylor Swift released Midnights, it often felt as though the universe had fully opened up to her. The Eras Tour was breaking records and blowing past the billion-dollar mark; its attendant concert film became the highest-grossing of all time. She generated interest and commerce and headlines everywhere she stepped foot, from tour stops to the tunnels of NFL stadiums. In 2023, she was named both TIME magazine’s Person of the Year and—just as iconic, tbh—Apple Music’s Artist of the Year. But do songs about that level of success speak to you? As the news broke that her highly private six-year relationship to Joe Alwyn had ended, Swifties started Swiftie-ing, quickly recirculating a clip on social media of Swift a few weeks earlier, onstage during an early Eras show, in tears as she sang “champagne problems”—a song she and Alwyn had written together. It was a reminder that, despite the superhero-like aura she now radiates, Swift, at her peak, still hurts like the rest of us. What sets her apart is her ability to sublimate that pain into pop. When she announced her 11th studio album in early 2024—while accepting another Grammy, as one does—we probably shouldn’t have been surprised. “I needed to make it,” she’d say of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT a few weeks later, to a crowd of—[rubs eyes]—96,000 in Melbourne, Australia. “I’ve never had an album where I’ve needed songwriting more than I needed it on TORTURED POETS.” Working again with trusted collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, she returns to the soft, comfortable, bed-like sonics of Midnights. But the stakes feel noticeably higher here: This isn’t so much a breakup album as it is a deep-sea exploration of everything Swift has been feeling, a plunge through emotional debris. On “But Daddy I Love Him”—over strings and guitar that faintly recall her country roots—she lashes out at the crush of scrutiny and expectation she’s been subject to from the start. Naturally, catharsis comes after the chorus: “I’ll tell you something right now,” she sings. “I’d rather burn my whole life down than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning.” On “Florida!!!” she and Florence + the Machine team up for a pulpy escape fantasy wherein they Thelma and Louise their way down to the Sunshine State in hopes of starting over with new lives and identities: “Love left me like this,” they sing. “And I don’t want to exist.” At turns hilarious and heartbreaking, TTPD is a study in extremes, Swift leaning into heightened emotions with heightened, hyperbolic, ALL-CAPS language and imagery—how we think when we’re drunk on love or flattened by its sudden disappearance. Note the dark humor she weaves through the Post Malone-enriched opener “Fortnight” (“Your wife waters flowers/I wanna kill her”). Or the thrilling self-deprecation of “Down Bad,” a foray into science fiction wherein Swift likens the warmth of a relationship to being abducted by love-bombing extraterrestrials—only to be left “naked and alone, in a field in my same old town.” But this remains her most candid and unsparing work to date: As a listener, you frequently get the feeling that you’ve stumbled across emails she’d written but never sent, or into conversations you were never meant to hear. There’s a density and a specificity and a ferocity to her lyrical work here that makes 2012’s “All Too Well” feel sorta light by comparison. If you’re the kind of Swiftie who likes to live in the details, well, this one might be your Super Bowl. “You swore that you loved me, but where were the clues?” she asks on the devastating “So Long, London,” a high point. “I died on the altar waiting for the proof.” Alone at a piano on the haunting “loml,” she flips the script on someone who’d told her she was the love of their life, by telling them that they were the loss of hers: “I’ll still see it until I die.” The story, as you likely know, doesn’t end there. We get a glimpse of new beginnings in “The Alchemy” (“This happens once every few lifetimes/These chemicals hit me like white wine”) and something like triumph in the montage-ready synths of “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” when Swift, shattered on the floor, “as the crowd was chanting, ‘More!’,” still finds the strength to deliver: “’Cause I’m a real tough kid and I can handle my shit.” But we also get a sense of acceptance, of newfound perspective. On “Clara Bow”—named after a 1920s movie star who was able to survive the jump from silent film to sound—Swift reflects on the journey of a small-town girl made good, sung from the vantage of an industry obsessed with the next big thing. She zooms out and out and out until, in the album’s closing seconds, she’s singing about herself in the third person, in past tense, acknowledging that nothing is forever. “You look like Taylor Swift in this light, we’re loving it,” she sings. “You’ve got edge she never did/The future’s bright, dazzling.”

  29. THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY

When she announced her 11th studio album in early 2024—while accepting another Grammy, as one does—we probably shouldn't have been surprised. "I needed to make it," she'd say of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT a few weeks later, to a crowd of—[rubs eyes]—96,000 in Melbourne, Australia.
