Bangladesh Travels and tours: cheap, budget travel with professional English local guides

Sajek Valley – Experience The Valley Of Clouds

The Bandarban District, situated in the southeast of Bangladesh, encompasses the southern part of the mountainous Chittagong Hill Tracts. The district, which is largely covered by forests and mountains, is home to the Bakkhali, Matamuhuri, and Shankha rivers. There is still debate about which of the mountains in the Bandarban district is the tallest mountain in Bangladesh: Keokradong in the southeast of the Upazila Ruma or the Mowdok Mual in the Upazila Thanchi.

We can find rainforests, deciduous forests, bamboo forests, ferns, and grasslands and find animals such as wild dogs, wild cats, elephants, leopards and over 600 bird species. The flora and fauna are similar to those found in neighboring Myanmar rather than India.

Agriculture is done by using slash-and-burn techniques, which, along with soil erosion caused by deforestation, are the primary drivers of landscape change. The majority of the local people consider themselves to be among the tribal population, collectively referred to as Jumma, although there is a large influx of Bengali immigrants. The Jumma consists of a diverse group of tribal people such as the Marma, Murong, Tripuri, Bawm, Tanchangya, Chakma, Chak,Khyang, Khumi, Lushei, Pankho, Ruma and Thanchi. Although muslims have a slim majority, Bandarban has a large number of Buddhists Christians and also traditional religions.

In this tour we’ll discover the natural beauty and rich culture of the hill tribes in the east of Bangladesh. You’ll enjoy great views over the green mountains and will get introduced to several of the tribes living in the area. You’ll also get a great introduction to the rivers of the east, along which life is centered here. One of the highlights of your tour is a stay on our private house boat on Kaptai Lake, which can host up to 6 people over six beds!

Our journey will also take you to Sajek Valley, which is known as the Queen of Hills and The Roof of Rangamati. The valley is named after the Sajek River, which originates from the Karnafuli river. The river is a natural border between Bangladesh and India. Sajek Valley is one of the most scenic regions in Bangladesh and is surrounded by mountains, dense forest, grasslands and hills. The valley is crossed by many rivers, big and small, which cross the valley. In Sajek Valley we can find many ethnic minorities such as Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Pankua, Lushai and Sagma. A lot of economic activities are dominated by women which you’ll notice at the tea stalls and food joints along the roadside. You’ll also quickly notice how warm and welcoming the people in this area are. Some of the places we’ll visit: – Meghla – Nilgiri – Nilachol – Shoilo Propat Waterfall – Sorno Mondir Golden Temple Highlights of the tour  – Experience tribal lifestyle – Try local food – Enjoy chander gari ride on hilly roads – Houseboat experience – Alutila cave and hanging bridge expedition

How to Explore Sajek Valley, The Kingdom of Clouds

Will you believe when I say I walked among the clouds one day? Most of you won’t if you have never been to Sajek Valley . I guess some of you haven’t even heard of this place. Even after being an underrated country, Bangladesh has spectacular tourist attractions.

Sajek Valley is one of them. Sajek Valley is known as ‘ The Kingdom of Clouds ‘ and ‘The Terrace of Rangamati ‘ to the Bangladeshi people. You can see the clouds beneath you no matter wherever you stand in the valley. Today, I will introduce you to one of Bangladesh’s most famous tourist destinations , the Sajek Valley.

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

A Brief Introduction to Sajek Valley

Sajek-Valley

In the north of Chittagong Hill Tracts, Sajek Valley is located in the Sajek union. It’s under Baghaichori Upazila in Rangamati hill district. The border of Bangladesh and Mizoram of India is 8 kilometres east of Sajek.

The valley was named Sajek Valley from the Sajek River that originates from the Karnafuli River. The Sajek river works as a border between Bangladesh and India . The valley is surrounded by dense forest, mountains and grassland hill tracks. Even the road to Sajek Valley is hilly.

What is Sajek Valley famous for?

Cloud-at-Sajek-Valley

Mainly known as the Roof of Rangamati, Sajek Valley is popular for its scenic beauty. The beautiful mountains above the clouds, dense forest, nearby waterfalls, and grassland hilly tracts combinedly make it a perfect spot for an enjoyable vacation.

It was unexplored for a long time but over the last few years it gained huge popularity as a tourist spot. Due to its location in a village, there aren’t many modern tourist facilities available. However, there are a few 5-star resorts and restaurants which can increase your overall travel experience.

How To Reach Sajek Valley

Chander-Gari

After reaching Dhaka Airport, you need to take a bus to Khagrachari. Many bus services like Shanti Paribahan, Shyamoli Paribahan, Econo, Er71 are there for this. The bus fares range from Tk. 700($ 8.15) to Tk. 2000($ 23.28). You will reach Khagrachari within 7-8 hours. After reaching Khagrachari, you have to travel with Chander Gari to reach Sajek Valley.

Chander Gari, the local vehicle of Sajek, will give you a breathtaking ride to Sajek Valley. You can sit on the rooftop if you are looking for an adventurous ride. You can either join a shared ride or hire the entire vehicle yourself.

If you are too afraid to board on the Chander Gari, you can get on a jeep instead. The only difference between the Chander Gari and a Jeep is that there’s no roof on a jeep. The jeep fare will be around Taka 10,000($ 116.41). The cost of Chander gari, if you hire the entire vehicle for two days one night, will be around Taka 9000($ 104.76). And if you take a shared ride of the Chander gari, the cost will be less.

Chander-gari-Tourist-jeep

You can talk to other travellers and choose the group you will be travelling with, or you can go to the Khagrachhari Jeep Owners Association office, and they will do it for you.

Now, if you are wondering why the prices of these vehicles are so high, let me tell you that a Chander gari can accommodate 10-12 people. Also, the accommodation and food cost of the driver is included in the package. If you want to minimize the vehicle cost, you can hire a CNG, and the cost will be around Taka 4000($ 46.56) for 2 days 1-night stay. But I won’t suggest renting a CNG as it becomes risky.

Advice: Foreigners need permission from the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Rangamati to visit Sajek Valley. And if you are a local, you need to register your name in the Army Camp.

The Chander Gari or jeep that you rent will be with you throughout your trip. So, you won’t need to worry much about finding vehicles for checking out the tourist spots located at a distance.

Remember: On your way to Sajek Valley or while travelling around the area, you will see many children waiting at the side of the road for food. Generally, tourists throw food at them from running vehicles, which seems quite inhumane as the children might get hurt or the food won’t remain consumable if thrown at the road.

On the pretext of helping, these tourists hurt these children; I absolutely hate such tourists! If you want to give these children food or anything, just stop the vehicle for a while.

How to Reach Sajek Valley from Chittagong

If you are going to Sajek Valley from Chittagong, you have to go to Khagrachari or Dighinala first. You will get 4 BRTC buses that leave every day from Kadamtoli, Chittagong to Khagrachari. You will also get Shanti Paribahan buses from Oxygen Mor, Chittagong that leave for Khagrachari after every 1 hour.

You will reach Khagrachari within 4-5 hours. After reaching your desired destination, you have to follow the same procedure mentioned above to reach Sajek Valley from Khagrachari

Best Time to Visit Sajek Valley

Sajek-Valley-Rangamati

In whichever season you visit Sajek Valley, you will get to see the beauty of the floating clouds. But to enjoy the best of the place, you should plan your trip during mid-November.

The prices and crowd are much lower during this time. During December-January, the crowd is high as most tourists visit the place during Winter. And in the rest of the months, the prices of resorts and restaurants are sky-high.

Places To Stay In Sajek Valley

Best Place to Eat in Sajek Valley: Montana Restaurant

Bamboo-Chicken-of-Rangamati

Being the most famous in Sajek to tourists, Montana restaurant offers a variety of cuisines with Bamboo chicken as the highlight. In simple words, chicken cooked inside a bamboo is bamboo chicken. Making this dish is not as easy as it seems. Fresh thin bamboo is needed to make this dish.

If the bamboo is old, then it loses its water content, due to which the chicken won’t have that unique flavour, which makes this recipe hard for us living in the cities. Different spices and the water of the bamboo brings a fresh, unique and juicy flavour of chicken that you won’t find anywhere else. The price of bamboo chicken is Taka 500-700($ 5.82-8.15). And rest items range from Taka 120-250($ 1.40-2.91).

Sajek Seni Lushai Cottage & Restaurant

It is a cottage consisting of 4 rooms and a restaurant. Their best food item is tinder bamboo curry.

What to Eat in Sajek Valley

I have already given you a small idea of the best food item to try in Sajek Valley which is the bamboo chicken. But there are many other food items that you must try while you are there. You can try local Bangladeshi food or barbeque. But most importantly, don’t forget to try the bamboo tea.

You will find stalls and shops in Konglak Pahar where it is available. You might have never tasted such tea anywhere else.

Things to Do in Sajek Valley

Konglak pahar.

Konglak Pahar

Konglak Pahar(Konglak mountain) is the highest peak of Sajek Valley. If you decide to climb up to the Konglak Pahar, keep a water bottle with you as it can get very tiring. When you reach the top of the mountain, the picturesque view will make you forget all your tiredness. There are a few resorts in this area as well.

Many local shops are available, and you should definitely try the bamboo tea. Most of the shops there are managed by women. The people of the Konglak area are poor, so if you see any kid buy something for them.

Advice:  Be careful during the rainy season as the road to Konglak Pahar is slippery.

Risang Waterfall and Alutila Cave

Risang Waterfall and Alutila Cave

Risang Waterfall, located at the bottom of the hill, will make you walk a lot. It is better not to visit Risang Waterfall during the Rainy season because of the slippery path down the hill. After a long walk from the main road and 235 steps down the hill, you will reach the waterfall.

Alutila Cave Exit Point

Alutila Cave, the 100 metres long natural cave, is a place of mystery to every tourist. The cave is dark, so the tourists usually light a fire torch. But if you are environmentally conscious, you should take a battery torch or turn on your phone’s flashlight. The path is slippery, so be cautious while walking inside the cave.

  • Entry fee of Alutila Cave: Taka 10($ 0.12)
  • Price of a fire Torch: Taka 10($ 0.12)

Lushai Heritage Village

Lushai Heritage Village

A few funky looking photographs wearing the Lushai dress is a significant takeaway of your Sajek trip. Upon entering the village, you will be introduced to a new culture and a different language. The Lushai people speak only in their local language, so take a tour guide with you as your translator.

  • Entry Fee: Taka 30($ 0.35)
  • Lushai Dress rent for 20 minutes: Taka 100($ 1.16)

Night At Ruilui Para

How-to-reach-sajek-valley

A walk around Ruilui Para will make you forget all your daily life concerns. It is the most famous area for tourists as most restaurants and resorts are here. Besides being the Sajek Valley’s busiest area, Ruilui Para offers the most beautiful scenic image of the floating clouds.

Walking amidst the clouds is all fun and games until you get a fever, so don’t forget to wear some heavy clothes. Ruilui Para gets into a different ambience at night with the buzzing crowds and young tourists singing famous Bangla songs in groups.

The road of Sajek Valley is 2 km long, so you can’t miss a night walk here. At the right side of the road’s starting, there’s a church which is well lit up during the night. Different traveller groups arrange campfires and BBQ parties at night. There aren’t much to shop in Sajek Valley, but you can buy the local goods and handcrafts to support the local people.

sun rise at sajek valley

When you go to Sajek Valley, you will see most tourists wake up before sunrise. Why is that? Well, it’s because watching sunrise from up above the clouds is rare in Bangladesh. In the cities, it’s almost impossible to enjoy such a scenario. Only a few hilly districts of Bangladesh allow us to enjoy such mesmerizing sunrise from above the mountains.

And Sajek Valley is the most preferable place for that. So, when you are in Sajek Valley you shouldn’t miss this opportunity of enjoying the beautiful sunrise amidst the mountains, dense forest, and grasslands hilly tracks.

Sikam Toisa Waterfall

Though a lot of people are acquainted with Risang Waterfall, only a few people know about the Sikam Toisa Waterfall. It is 2-3 hours hiking distance from the Ruilui Para. It is also known as “Komlok waterfall” or “Pidam Toisa Fall”. For older people and children, it would be hard to trek this path.

Moreover, the slippery road due to rain makes hiking more toilsome in this area. So, if you don’t like adventure, you should avoid it. But hiking through this path and then seeing the Sikam Toisa Waterfall will be a memorable journey if you dare to do so.

Sunset from Sajek Valley Helipad

Sajek Valley Helipad

Out of all the things to do in Sajek Valley, watching the sunset from the helipad is the favorite of all tourists. Watching the beautiful setting sun from this place is a treat to the eyes. Most tourists walk around, click pictures, and have fun for a few hours at this place before and after sunset. Most importantly, it’s more fun to watch the sunset from the helipad when less tourists are present.

Stone Garden is another notable tourist spot in Sajek Valley. Upon entering Sajek through the main gate, you will find the Stone Garden right beside the Sajek Resort. It is a great place to click some beautiful Instagrammable pictures.

Sajek Valley Tour- Cost, How to go, Where To stay

Sajek valley tour.

Sajek Valley is called the Kingdom of Clouds. Sajek is the beautiful creation of the creator. It belongs to the Sajek Union of Baghaichhari Upazila of Rangamati District, Bangladesh. Sajek Valley is 1800 feet above ground level. There are three colonies in Sajek. They are Ruilui, Hamari, and Konglak respectively. Sajek’s most attractive things are its clouds. The road of Sajek is more than a rollercoaster. You will be amazed to see such beautiful resorts or cottages in the mountains above thousands of feet!

Best time to visit Sajek –

You can visit Sajek at any time of the year. Sajek has its own beauty in each season. But if you want to see clouds, you can go between July and November . But I went to Sajek 2 times. November and January. I didn’t get any clouds in the month of January. But I got such a beautiful view of the sky that cannot be expressed in words.

How to Sajek Valley-

Even though Sajek is in the Rangamati district, it has to travel through Khagrachari. This route is more accessible.

Khagrachari bus comes directly from Dhaka. Buses leave for Khagrachari from any bus stop in Dhaka like Kolabagan, Sayedabad, Gabtoli, or Kolyanpur. Non AC fare- 900 to 1000 taka and AC bus fare- 1000 to 1600 taka. It will take 7-8 hours to reach Khagrachari. (Buy Dhaka to Khagrachari bus ticket online) You can get down at Shapla Chottor of Khagrachari . Take your breakfast and then reserve a CNG, Tourist car, jeep, or motorbike from Shapla chottor. You should reserve a tourist car for 12 people, a Jeep for 14-16 people, and CNG for 3 people. However, the driver will have to pay extra if there are more than 12 people in the jeep.

If you come from Khagrachari via Dighinala and go to Sajek, the fare will be less than 1000 Tk. This fare for traveling to Sajek is fairly fixed. But in-season and off-season may vary the fare. However, off-day fares are higher than on other days. From Dighinala or Shapla Chottor, you have to go directly to Baghaihat Army Camp . After entering your name there, you have to leave for Sajek. So to go to Sajek you must be at the army camp between 10 am and 2:30 pm. It takes quite a bit of time to enter the name here. At this time you will see some fruit shops around. Different types of fruits are available like hills banana, papaya, plum, coconut, sugarcane, pineapple, grapefruit, etc.

Sajek Valley Resort –

There is no shortage of resorts in Sajek . According to the quality, the rent of each resort is different. But definitely stay overnight at a resort with a good view. We stayed in a room with a balcony at Hotel Paradise. However, if you have a resort of your own choice, book it in advance. Check the resort environment and facilities before booking the room.

Sajek Valley Food Hotels-

Sajek has many hotels and restaurants. You can choose your preferred package. But you have to order at least 1 hour before eating. You can’t get food in Sajek Valley without an order. Must try indigenous items of Sajek. We really liked the traditional Spicy meat paste, hill chicken curry, and bamboo chicken . But don’t forget to check the food quality of the hotel before ordering food. You have to buy water here. And the price is a bit high, but it’s normal in hilly areas.

What to see in Sajek Valley-

1) Ruilui village – Mainly tourists come to visit this neighborhood. Sajek’s hotels, resorts, and parks are all included in this area.

2) Konglak Hill – The highest point of Sajek is Kanglak Hill. To go there, you have to trek for about 1 hour. The path is not so difficult, if you want, you can buy a bamboo stick for support. On the way up the hill, you will find two small shops. Where you can buy bananas, water, and cold drinks. Both sunset and sunrise are beautiful at Kanglak Hill. But if you want to see the sunrise, you must leave early in the morning, and it’s also very difficult to trek in the sun.

3) Kamalak waterfall – Kamalak waterfall is also known as Pidam Taisa or Sikkam Taisa . It takes 2-2.30 hours to reach this waterfall by trekking from Sajek Valley. It’s not easy to cross this trekking road to reach the waterfall. Must take a guide with you.

4) Sajek Helipad – Sajek Helipad is a famous place to watch the sunset. But if you want, you can also watch the sunrise. This place is best for chatting at sunset time with a cup of tea. The tribals have their own traditional food stalls here. You can try their bamboo tea.

5) Stone Garden – The entry fee is Tk 20. A small park. The park is beautifully designed with stones.

6) Jharbhoj Picnic Spot – This place is very beautiful. A beautiful view is available from here. There are various arrangements for entertainment inside. Entry fee- 20 rupees.

7) Lusai Village – One of my favorite places in Sajek is Lusai Village . The entrance fee for this village is 30 taka. A neat and clean little village. Their main objective is to show the history, tradition, culture, and lifestyle of the Lusai Tribals to the tourists. Here you can also take photos wearing Lusai traditional clothes. The Lusai house is made of straw and bamboo. If you want to have a closer look at the lifestyle of the Lusai, you can also stay overnight here. They have a small Tree resort. The rent of which will be 2000 taka per night. The most interesting thing I found was a shop without a shopkeeper. They display their products in the shop with price tags. If you want to buy anything, just take it and pay honestly. I like their idea.

*** Sajak’s Bamboo Chicken and Bamboo Tea are a must-try.

Also, on the way to or from Khagrachari, you can visit Dighinala Hanging Bridge, Hajachara Jharna, and Dighinala Forest Bihar. Also, after spending one night in Sajek, you can also visit Alu Tila Cave, Tareng, Hanging Bridge of Khagrachari the next day.

Budget-Friendly Tour Tips-

1) Try to avoid closing days. Off days are quite crowded so everything costs more.

2) Try to go in groups. This will reduce the cost of the tourist car or Jeep per person.

3) Where to go, what to see, and how many nights to stay, settle everything and the rent before hiring the tourist car/CNG/Bike/Jeep.

4) Check the item before eating and fix the price.

5) Check the quality of the resort and price before staying at the resort.

6) Come to Khagrachari by non-AC bus.

Warning for Sajek Valley Tour-

1) Carry the photocopy of the national identity card.

2) You have to be at the army camp between 10 am and 2:30 pm. Otherwise, You will not be able to enter Sajek.

3) Do not trek to Kamalak Springs without a guide. Weak, respiratory, and heart patients should not come for this trek. The trekking road is very slippery so wear a trekking shoe.

4) You will not get any other network except Robi and Teletalk SIM.

5) If you want to travel in Off day, must book a resort before coming.
