Looking for colorful visuals? You'll find them down below. Craving something that will stimulate and challenge? The App offer is full of games that fit the bill. And while many of these games can be played on an iPhone, the larger displays on the best iPads , make them play at their very best on Apple's best-selling tablets.

To track down the best iPad games, we've searched across a wide variety of genres — from card-playing games to endless runners — to find titles that look great on everything from an iPad mini to an iPad Pro . That means richer graphics, more details and better touch controls than you’d get on other devices.

Don’t get us wrong — gaming’s fun on any iOS device. (Check out our picks for best iOS games to see just how fun.) And many of the best iPad games selections play just as well on Apple’s phones. In case you’ve got both devices on hand, we’ve even designated the games that play just as well on the iPhone as they do on the iPad.

But the focus here is on iPad games and the ones that make the most of your tablet. If you’re looking for fun, no matter the genre, these best iPad games are the ones to download.

Best iPad games: Action games

Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you. Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate.

A lot of different types of games qualify for the action game genre. From platform games to shooters to side-scrollers, so long as the pace never flags and the on-screen action keeps coming at you, you’ve got a great action title on your hands. And these are the action games for the iPad that have caught our eye.

Mushroom 11

Mushroom 11 is one of the best iPad games

In a world that’s seen better days, a new form of life has emerged: a kind of intelligent goop. You are that goop in Mushroom 11, an oddball mix of platform game, puzzler and post-apocalyptic exploration.

Although Mushroom 11 originated on PC, it feels tailor-made for the iPad’s touchscreen as you prod your tablet’s display to urge your goop on, occasionally splitting it apart to complete puzzles that require you to be in two places at once. It’s creative and offers great value – although you’d pay way more than $4.99 to ensure our own world doesn’t end up like this!

Giant Dancing Plushies

Giant Dancing Plushies is one of the best iPad games

In Giant Dancing Plushies, a $3.99 rhythm action game, terrifying aliens have invaded and are determined to stomp our world to pieces. No, hang on: cute and cuddly (but still terrifying) alien dancing plushies have invaded – and mostly seem keen on obliterating army types dead set on ending their groovy moves.

You play the plushies, moving to the beat, occasionally using Street Fighter-style special moves to unleash stuffed-toy furry fury on your angry aggressors. It’s absurd stuff and lots of fun – and you can even have the giant toys dance along to your own music collection.

Interloper is one of the best iPad games

You’re in space. There are lots of spaceships. So of course everyone’s trying to blast each other to pieces. In this $5.99 shoot ’em up, you pilot a spaceship and get to make NEEEOOOWWWW and DAGGADAGGADAGGA noises as you swoop between asteroids and annihilate opponents.

Although Interloper provides a backstory and missions, Interloper is more exhilarating arcade fare than lengthy campaign. For mobile, this works – it’s great to dip in and out of. Neatly, it reorients itself for landscape or portrait play too.

Super Fowlst 2

Super Fowlst is one of the best iPad games

Demons have broken through into our reality in Super Fowlst 2, and only you can stop them! Also, you happen to be a chicken. On the plus side, you’re a determined chicken, who arcs left or right with a tap of the screen in this free four-way scrolling arcade game.

It’s familiar stuff. Bonk enemies on the head and they vanish. Grab keys to unlock doors. Collect coins. Don’t die. But algorithmically generated level layouts keep things fresh, permanent power-ups help you get further into the game during each attempt, and bizarre boss battles keep your feathered fingers nimble.

best iPad games include Fancade

With its abbreviated takes on App Store classics like top-down racers, one-thumb platformers and games where a hole gulps down the landscape, Fancade almost comes across like the App Store in microcosm. For a freebie, it’s generous indeed.

Then you realize that it’s built on a construction kit and recognize the other side of the App Store – making games – is within your grasp, too. You can kick things off with pre-canned kits or a blank canvas. Want to thank the dev? Pay $0.99 for an ad-free month.

Fancade is also a great game for the iPhone.

Steredenn is one of the best iPad games

Steredenn is fairly simple, in that this $3.99 blaster merely requires you to shoot all of the things on your iPad screen. The game’s DNA has roots in classic scrolling fare like R-Type, and finds you fending off waves of baddies, before confronting huge bosses that are armed to the teeth.

The twist is that every game of Steredenn is different. Environments are semi-randomly generated. Upgrades are acquired at level’s end to complement your existing two-weapon set-up. Added to that is a layer of madcap oddness, with foes that have giant chainsaws strapped to their ships, and upgrade weapons ranging from massive stabby swords to pyrotechnic madness.

Super Cat Tales 2

Super Cat Tales 2 is one of the best iPad games

Console-style platform games are a tricky proposition on mobile devices, where’s there’s no physical controls — only a slippy touchscreen. The free Super Cat Tales 2 clevely subverts the genre by reimagining it for your iPad.

There are echoes of classic console fare: chunky pixel art; secrets to find; coins to collect. But the controls simply have you press left or right, your cat automatically jumping on reaching a platform’s edge or leaping between walls like a furry ninja. You’ll fight this at first, but it’ll soon become second nature – and you’ll wonder why all mobile games aren’t made this way.

If the ads in Super Cat Tales 2 become too much, just pay $4.99 to go ad-free.

Super Cat Tales 2 is also a great game for the iPhone

Best iPad games: Adventure games

Sometimes you want a game that puts as much emphasis on story and atmosphere as it does toward on-screen action. The best adventure games for the iPad include chilling scenes and puzzling mysteries. You’ll find them to be satisfying additions to your tablet.

Device 6 is one of the best iPad games

If ever there was a game made for iPad, it’s this wonderful $3.99 thriller from Simogo. After an exciting movie-like intro, you find yourself stranded on a remote island, with no idea how you got there. Your aim: escape.

Device 6’s presentation of the world is unique, upending and blending the conventions of games and books. The paths you travel comprise the story’s narrative, within which you’ll find embedded puzzles and an increasingly meta side to the tale. It’s smart, stylish and unique – and wouldn’t work on traditional game systems.

Download Device 6 for iPad

Unmemory is one of the best iPad games

Initially, unmemory looks like an illustrated mystery novel, if you set your reading app to display a chapter as one long scrolling pane. You awake with blood on your hands and, well, no memory.

Everything changes a few minutes into the game, when you hear a phone ringing and remember there was one depicted further up the page. At that point, it becomes clear each chapter of the $5.99 unmemory is a network of interlinked puzzles cleverly woven into the larger narrative. Top stuff – and a superior experience on the iPad’s larger display.

Download unmemory for iPad

Best iPad games: Arcade games

Instead of riding your bike down to local arcade like you did back in the old days, your iPad becomes an arcade with these old-school offerings. Best of all, you don’t have save up your quarters to give these best iPad games a try.

Drop Wizard

Drop Wizard is one of the best iPad games

Like Super Cat Tales 2 abovet, Drop Wizard evokes gaming of old but remakes it for the touchscreen. This time, there are shades of classic single-screen platformers Snow Bros. and Bubble Bobble.

Unlike the games that inspired it, this $2.99 effort is an auto-runner, with your wizard blasting magic at enemies upon landing. Those that are dazed can be booted into the air, at which point they tumble around and eventually turn into fruit, because that’s what happened in video games. It’s glorious – like a vintage arcade cabinet has been squeezed onto your iPad.

Drop Wizard is also a great game for the iPhone

Download Drop Wizard for iPad

Osmos for iPad

Osmos is one of the best iPad games

Arcade games tend to be fast-paced, but this $4.99 effort is ambient in nature. Osmos has you control a mote, which moves by ejecting pieces of itself. This makes the mote shrink, but it can grow by absorbing smaller motes it collides with.

This mechanic plays out across a range of arenas. Some resemble primordial soup and demand patience as you slowly conquer what surrounds you. Others find you careening around central “Attractors,” like planets orbiting a sun. The iPad’s larger screen affords you the precision you’ll need in this beguiling game.

Download Osmos for iPad

Edge is one of the best iPad games

Edge is a $2.99 App Store classic that tasks you with guiding a cube around blocky isometric levels, collecting objects and trying to not fall into the deadly void. With its minimalist vibe and superb soundtrack, this iPad game offers plenty of atmosphere as you map out each level in your mind.

And you’ll need to do so if you want to gain the highest grades. They’re only dished out for people who complete levels quickly enough in Edge – no mean feat when platforms shift and move, and collectables are sneakily hidden within the landscape.

Edge is also a great game for the iPhone

Download Edge for iPad

Jumpgrid is one of the best ipad games

Imagine Pac-Man. Now imagine it compressed into a three-by-three grid, and instead of ghosts chasing you, massive chunks of scenery fly around, constantly threatening to smash you to pieces. And all of that on fast-forward.

That’s the basic premise of Jumpgrid, a high-octane, pulse-pounding $2.99 twitch arcade effort. All you need to do is eat eight dots and leap into a portal. But even though each level takes mere seconds in theory, many will have you maniacally wide-eyed, desperately trying to win when your fingers fail you for the umpteenth time.

Jumpgrid is also a great game for the iPhone

Download Jumpgrid for iPad

Best iPad games: Card games

Collectible card games have gone digital, moving from the tabletop to our digital devices. And while the iPad’s big screen may seem like overkill for this genre, this entry on the best iPad games list makes the most of the expanded screen space.

Meteorfall: Krumit’s Tale

Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale is one of the best iPad games

There are loads of App Store titles that mash a deck-building card game and turn-based strategy together and pack the combination into a diminutive playfield – but the $6.99 Meteorfall: Krumit’s Tale is the best.

Its twist is a clever risk-vs.-reward mechanic. Cards are bought or discarded for extra cash. Every turn, you’ll have to weigh up whether to add to your inventory or risk facing an enemy when you’re decidedly lacking in kit. It takes a while to master, but there’s lashings of depth here if you make the time.

Meteorfall: Krumit’s Tale is also a great game for the iPhone

Best iPad games: Puzzle games

From solving riddles to unscrambling words, puzzle games are a great way to keep your mind sharp. But the best iPad games do more than just transplant puzzlers to a tablet. Point-and-click adventures become easier to control, while game makers take advantages of big screens and gameplay physics to redefine the genre on the iPad.

Love You To Bits

Love You to Bits is one of the best iPad games

Old-school point-and-click mechanics benefit from a larger display, but Love You To Bits further deserves a place on your iPad due to its gorgeous, vibrant visuals.

The storyline finds the protagonist rookie space explorer’s robot friend Nova scattered across the galaxy. He has to search for her many parts and put her back together.

This $3.99 adventure is relentlessly creative, with regular pop-culture references to movies and games. Its charm and imagination will propel you through the odd logic snafu right to its heart-warming conclusion.

Download Love You To Bits for iPad

Euclidean Skies

Euclidean Skies is one of the best iPad games

Like Euclidean Lands , Euclidean skies finds you manipulating landscapes and buildings that impossibly float in the sky. Turrets and floors must be shifted and spun to help the hero reach her goals in this $4.99 puzzler.

Euclidean Skies is a visual treat, which combined with its tactile nature makes the game ideal fare for the iPad’s larger display. More space for fingers and eyes gives you a better chance at everything from constructing new bridges out of nowhere to defeating huge bosses by crushing them within warped chunks of levitating structures.

Download Euclidean Skies for iPad

Little Alchemy 2

Little Alchemy 2 is one of the best iPad games

Little Alchemy 2 marries science and whimsy, tasking you with creating new elements by mixing objects from your inventory. You begin with basics like air, earth, fire and water – along with the knowledge there are nearly 600 more items to discover.

Having space to experiment makes this free puzzler ideal for iPad. And although there’s a temptation to drag every new discovery on to every existing one, there is logic at the game’s core. It might not be scientifically accurate, but where else would you get a plane by merging metal with a bird?

Download Little Alchemy 2 for iPad

Baba Is You

Baba is You is one of the best iPad games

This innovative $6.99 single-screen puzzler invites you to tear up the rule-book – or, more accurately, make your own. And we mean that in a broadly literal manner, because rules that govern object and win conditions are written out using on-screen tiles in Baba Is You.

By shoving said tiles around, you can upend everything — changing every wall into a key, for example — and determine whether objects can be pushed or are even solid. This one starts simple, but before long merrily smashes out your brains. Baba Is Brilliant, then.

Baba Is You is also a great game for the iPhone

Download Baba Is You for iPad

The Gardens Between

The Gardens Between is one of the best iPad games

Time travel forms the core of this gorgeous $4.99 puzzler. Two friends unwisely touch a glowing orb and find themselves on fanciful islands constructed from their memories. The aim: to reach the top of each miniature mountain.

The path in The Gardens Between is linear, but often blocked. You must manipulate objects and time — running time backward or freezing the children while moving the scene — to progress. The visuals need an iPad’s large display to be appreciated, while the game’s tactile nature feels at home on the touchscreen rather than under the lifeless click of a PC cursor.

Download The Gardens Between for iPad

7 Billion Humans

7 Billion Humans is one of the best iPad games

Like its predecessor, the equally impressive Human Resource Machine , the $4.99 7 Billion Humans is simultaneously a tricky puzzler, a lightweight programming primer and a wry commentary on the future of employment.

The premise of the game is that robots do all the work, making humans feel worthless. The robots therefore have humans fill their days with mundane box-sorting challenges, directed by programming steps that you define.

On a phone, 7 Billion Humans is fiddly. On an iPad, it’s great – funny, brain-bending and with the potential to teach you a thing or two, in more ways than you might first imagine.

Download 7 Billion Humans for iPad

Day Repeat Day

Day Repeat Day is one of the best iPad games

There are two sides to this intriguing $4.99 match-three effort. The puzzles in Day Repeat Day are much like Bejeweled or Candy Crush, having you make a set number of matches within a limited number of moves. But there’s a messaging center as well.

Within that, a story plays out that finds you chatting with colleagues, friends and family, attempting to navigate a work/life balance in a world that doesn’t care much for life. Take your time with this one and breathe in its details — it’s a brilliantly pitched dark satire masquerading as a casual game.

Best iPad games: Racing games

Get behind the wheel — virtually, of course — as your iPad transforms in a powerful race car or a challenging course. Even better, the best racing games on the iPad make the most of the tablet’s touch interface to satisfy your need for speed.

Need for Speed Most Wanted

Need for Speed Most Wanted is one of the best iPad games

Too often, racing games go all-in on realism. Need for Speed Most Wanted has a different approach, echoing arcade racer OutRun 2 in having you blast along at manic speeds and drift for miles around long, sweeping bends.

The world of this $4.99 racer is much grimmer and grayer than Sega’s classic, but it’s exhilarating as you become the best street racer around, beating rivals and outrunning cops. The touchscreen controls are pitch-perfect, and the game wisely avoids the loot crate nonsense and absurdly brief races that afflict its successors.

Download Need for Speed Most Wanted for iPad

Rush Rally Origins

Rush Rally Origins is one of the best iPad games

Later entries in the Rush Rally series are reminiscent of console fare, with tense races and behind-the-wheel viewpoints. But this $4.99 racer for the iPad harks back to the origin of the series, playing things out from above across a range of time trials, championships and multi-car clashes.

The vaguely retro feel (albeit with modern-era graphics) continues through to the controls, which make it a cinch to drift around corners, giving you a fighting chance against unforgiving physics and tough computer opponents.

Rush Rally Origins is also a great game for the iPhone

Best iPad games: Role-playing games

Take on a new persona and immerse yourself in a compelling story by trying out great role-playing games — or RPGs — on the iPad. Our favorite games make the most of the iPad’s screen so that the only thing you have to contemplate is your next move.

Marvel Future Revolution

Marvel Future Revolution

Marvel 's first open-world action RPG for mobile is right at home on your iPad, as Marvel Future Revolution puts you right in the shoes and spandex of your favorite superheroes (or as your own unique hero if that's what you prefer). Endless storylines and campaigns mean you'll keep coming back for more in this game that blends brawling with open-world exploration.

You'll appreciate how the realistic 3D graphics look on your iPad's display, and you'll enjoy the multiplayer aspect of this game. Even better, frequent updates include new playable characters and costumes tied to the MCU. The game is free to play with in-app purchases allowing you to add to your costumes and characters.

Marvel Future Revolution is also available for the iPhone.

Book of Demons

Book of Demons is one of the best iPad games

There’s a distinctly retro vibe to Book of Demons, a $9.99 dungeon crawler, which borrows from classic titles like Diablo. But in reworking the genre for the touchscreen, this game concocts something that’s simultaneously suitable and unique.

Pathways are limited and responses to attacks are automatic. But you can optionally direct your firepower and unleash spells, which can be upgraded over time.

With an oddball aesthetic reminiscent of papercraft, Book of Demons might not be what you’d expect – it’s more RTS than hack-and-slash – but it’s ideal iPad fodder.

Crying Suns

Crying Suns is one of the best iPad games

You might think you’ve had a bad morning, but the protagonist of this $8.99 strategy game has just been woken, told his empire is likely gone, and informed that he died and is in fact a clone. It must be a Monday.

In Crying Suns, you figure out what’s going on, by bossing around your crew, taking in exposition, sending commandos on missions, and blowing up enemy ships. With a more defined structure than similar games, there’s a strong narrative here; and there’s replay value in chipping away at the story in subsequent attempts — and blowing up more bad guys, obviously .

FTL: Faster Than Light

FTL: Faster Than Light is one of the best iPad games

In FTL: Faster Than Light, you’re trying to save the galaxy. Unfortunately, you’re being chased by folks dead set on your destruction. As a result, you’re constantly on guard and making life-or-death decisions in this $9.99 strategy title.

You can jump to new sectors of space, but this can land you in fraught battles. When in a scrap, you must prioritize your crew’s actions, ensuring your collective survival.

Fortunately, you can pause FTL to have a think. And during battles, the interface is ideally suited to iPad, even if you might not think that when your ship’s ablaze and you’ve no idea where your enemies are hiding.

Best iPad games: Sports games

Sports are better on big-screen TVs. So it stands to reason that sports games thrive on the iPad, too — especially when the games have figured out creative ways to employ touchscreen controls.

Touchgrind Skate 2

Touchgrind skate 2 is one of the best iPad games.

Skateboard games on consoles give you a gamepad for controlling an on-screen avatar. In contrast, Touchgrind Skate 2 (free, with in-app purchases for unlocking new locations) gets you up close and personal with your board by having you use two fingers to guide it across the iPad screen..

In effect, your digits stand in for legs, with you gently tilting them to steer and using a range of gestures in a timely manner to perform show-off stunts. It’s clever and more freeform than pseudo sequels Touchgrind BMX and Touchgrind Scooter – although they are fun, too.

Touchgrind Skate 2 is also a great game for the iPhone

Retro Goal is one of the best sports games on the iPad

With modern console soccer games demanding you grab a gamepad and memorize a dizzying number of button combinations to kick a ball about, Retro Goal is a breath of fresh air. It rethinks the beautiful game for iPad, streamlining it to the important bits.

On the management side, you use your meager funds to upgrade your team. On the pitch, you control goal attempts, using gestures to perform silky smooth moves that’d leave a World Cup winner breathless. You get 10 games for free and then it’s just $0.99 to unlock the full game.

Best iPad Games: Strategy games

A proper plan is more than half the battle when it comes to strategy games. And these best iPad games reward you for coming up with the right plan for victory, whether in a turn-based game or conquering your opponent.

The Battle of Polytopia

Battle of Polytopia is one of the best iPad games

You can buy full-fat Civilization for your iPad or iPhone, but it’s expensive and time consuming. If you’re lacking in funds or hours, The Battle of Polytopia gives you similar turn-based bouts of Machiavellian maneuvering in stripped-back form.

The free game limits the size of worlds and how many tribes you can battle. Buy extra tribes and things open up – but even then, technology cuts out before guns and planes arrive, keeping things manageable. Still, there remains plenty of scope for building strategies and improving your game, not least in the turn-limited score-attack mode.

The Battle of Polytopia is also a great game for the iPhone

Bad North: Jotunn Edition

Bad North: Jotunn Edition is one of the best iPad games

Vikings, eh? Always wanting to be stabby and pillage-y, as you’ve discovered now they’ve found your island kingdom. Your only hope: to bravely defend your islands by commanding limited groups of soldiers.

In Bad North: Jotunn Edition, battles are automatic and rely on you using cunning strategy. Place archers up high; have pikemen take on invaders whose weapons have less range. Over time, the situation evolves, for better (new weapons) or worse (dead commanders are gone for good).

With each island being procedurally generated, every campaign is unique, making Bad North great value at $3.99.

Far: Lone Sails

Far: Lone Sails is one of the best iPad games

There’s a surprising serenity about the dystopian world in Far: Lone Sails, a $3.99 iPad download. It’s just you and your colossal vehicle, struggling onward across a seabed dotted with the remains of what appears to be a lost civilization.

Whether that’s the case, you won’t know for sure. Far: Lone Sails begins by telling you nothing. You must figure out yourself how to fuel, move and upgrade your vehicle. Despite the constant micro-management, it’s meditative stuff — and the iPad lets you glimpse moments of beauty in the bleak landscape that passes you by.

Far: Lone Sails is also a great download for the iPhone.

best ipad games freeways

If you’ve ever got grumpy at a complex intersection and thought you could do a better job of designing one, Freeways offers your chance to prove it. This superb $2.99 ‘interchange design simulator’ gives you entry/exit points and lets you get on with it.

Arrows denote traffic flow and density and early levels merely task you with connecting the dots. Eventually, you’re mired in multi-level spaghetti junctions from hell, causing miles-long tailbacks. With the iPad’s screen acreage, you’ve at least room to draw (and re-draw) and a fighting chance of success.

ssalvagette is one of the best iPad games

Genre mash-ups have a tendency to create something compelling — not least when two gameplay types that shouldn’t meld fashion something brilliant. That’s the case with freebie Salvagette, which combines bullet-hell shoot ’em ups with turn-based strategy.

Your aim in the single-screen arena is to ram your ship into enemies, which signal their intention to fire by way of blue halos. You have endless time to plot your pathways, and yet the game becomes surprisingly tense as the screen fills with projectiles.

Ratings and Reviews

The game is good and all, except it has plesiosaurus for some reason, a trend in all of the hunting games including ice age hunter, and the two Dino hunting games. This game and the other huntings ones are kinda difficult to gain money, it just takes forever. With this game, ice age hunter, Dino safari, and Dino Assassin, please make it so you can earn currency easier.

Love the game tho....

I love the game. BUT I don't like the controls in the updated version!!!!! It's hard to control him and I keep dying as I'm too slow to catch the animals who kill me.. PLEASE make the controls back to normal! Please! Please! Please!

Disappointing junk

The sounds of the lemur are the ugly monkey sounds and change the sound of the lemur plz! The impala sound is so creepy. There is ugly wrinkles on the hippo 🦛 when he runs. And the leopard 🐆 and the impala run crazy. I heard the sound of the monkey🐒 when i was the hyena. The elephant🐘, rhino🦏, and ostrich should be aggressive. Note: Plz plz plz change the sound of the lemur!!! Tip: the bull 🐃 is twisted.

elder-scrolls-blades-2

You can play Elder Scrolls: Blades on iPad for free.

I'm a fan of a larger screen when gaming, so when I'm not on a console or PC, I like to play games on my iPad . More mobile games are taking on console-like qualities, especially with new hardware updates like Apple's A14 Bionic chip , which majorly improves graphics speed. The latest model, the iPad Pro , sports Apple's M1 chip , which is also used in MacBooks and the new iMac, allowing for smoother game performance.

Don't fear for your wallet just yet. While newer iPad models can have a hefty price tag, there are multiple models that will still meet your gaming needs. If you're bargain hunting, check out CNET's back-to-school sales lists .

Whether you just got a new iPad or you've had one for years, we've got a list of some of the best games for you to check out on your tablet. Regardless of whether you're looking for an educational game, a card game, an adventure game, or something else, there's an iPad game out there for you. Some, but not all, iPad games are available as part of Apple's gaming subscription service, Apple Arcade. Others are available to download free or for a price to your iOS device in the App Store. We update this list periodically.

best safari games on ipad

Gone Home will suck you in from the very start. You play as Katie Greenbriar, home from a year long trip in Europe. When you arrive home (in the middle of a thunderstorm no less), your family has seemingly vanished. Explore all the nooks and crannies of the sprawling house. Collect clues and unravel what happened to your family while you were gone.

The tension created in the game through sheer mystery is almost more frightening than if there were jump scares. As a diehard mystery game fan, I found Gone Home immersive, engrossing and emotional. While playing, I found myself turning on all the lights to stave off the unnerving feeling of being in this deserted house. I felt sadness and frustration as I opened doors and found no one behind them, but the emotional payoff was so bittersweet and satisfying.

It's a bit cumbersome sometimes to play it on iPad and could benefit from adding controller support in the future. Definitely still worth a play though.

Price: Free

Online multiplayer game Among Us went viral during the pandemic and reported nearly half a billion users towards the end of 2020. It's even inspired a few knock-offs, like Goose Goose Duck.

In Among Us, you can play online with strangers or friends, in groups of four to 10 people. In the game, you and other players spawn as crew members on a spaceship. You must keep the ship in operation as you return to Earth, but one of the players is a shape-shifting alien attempting to kill off the crew before you reach home. The twist? The alien, or the imposter , looks just like everyone else.

If you're the imposter, your goal is to be sneaky -- sabotage the ship, frame others and kill the crew. If you're a regular crew member, you're trying to fix the ship and figure out who the imposter is with the rest of your teammates. Crew members can vote on who they think the imposter is and that person can be eliminated -- even if they're not the true imposter.

The Pathless

Price: apple arcade subscription ($5 a month).

When The Pathless hit Apple Arcade, I couldn't put it down. In the game, you play as the last Hunter, a veiled young woman with archery skills tasked with traveling to a mysterious, cursed island inhabited by corrupt spirits. Alongside an eagle companion (yes, you can pet the eagle) you must defeat the evil to bring back the light. This task is just as big as it sounds.

You can go from boss fight to boss fight for a speed run, but taking the time to explore each world, gather collectibles and find secrets will experience the full breadth of the game's narrative.

There's a nice consistency to the game without crossing the line into tedious repetition. The controls take a bit of time to get used to, but finding a rhythm is key to seamlessly running, jumping and firing arrows. Also, if the touch controls aren't your thing, The Pathless supports a controller.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is a pretty well-known mobile game. In the country-life RPG. In the game, you inherit your grandfather's farm and are tasked with running the place -- fix up your house, plant seeds, and clear out weeds. Explore Pelican Town and meet new friends. Townspeople will sometimes have items to share, like a fishing pole, or side quests to go on. There's a handy menu system that helps you keep track of your inventory, funds, skills, relationships, and how your farm is doing.

It's a cute game that mixes the nostalgia of early Nintendo games with the comfort gameplay people sought from Animal Crossings during the pandemic.

Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm

Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm is a gorgeous open-world action fantasy RPG similar to Zelda or Kingdom Hearts. Oceanhorn 2 tells the story of a young knight on a quest with his friends, Trin, the granddaughter of Arcadia's leader Archimedes, and Gen, a robot armed with a Samurai weapon. All three are controllable as you journey across Gaia to defend Arcadia against Warlock Mesmeroth's Dark Army.

Oceanhorn 2 is packed with collectibles, puzzles, boss fights, as well as a stunning world to just explore. The game is a prequel to Monster of the Uncharted Sea, but playing the original isn't a must. You can also check out Oceanhorn: Chronos Dungeon on Apple Arcade as well.

When Oceanhorn 2 arrived on Apple Arcade, it felt the most like a console game out of the subscription service's lineup. The game supports a controller as well, if you don't want to navigate the touch controls.

It's been over a year since I first played Oxenfree and I still find myself thinking about it. A group of friends hanging out on a beach take a turn for the worse when the teens accidentally open a ghostly rift. Soon the group is fighting for survival, struggling through time loops, and doubting if everyone is truly who they say they are.

I can't speak highly enough of this choice-based game. Oxenfree calls itself a "supernatural teen thriller," but deftly avoids tropes and cliches, providing characters with depth and a fascinating, eerie plot. It's a quick game you could play in one sitting, but there's multiple endings so you can always go back.

Plus, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is coming in 2022, so now is a perfect time to play (or replay!) the original game.

best safari games on ipad

Gris is a beautiful game about dealing with traumatic experiences in life. It's a stunning platformer with remarkable color and hand-drawn detail. It tells the story of a young woman struggling after a painful experience to find redemption, understanding and forgiveness.

Gris' landscapes and gameplay bring to mind the Alto series (Snowman) and Monument Valley (UsTwo). Developers at Nomada Studios use color, music, light, even the woman's clothing, to convey emotion and further the story -- which is intentionally left ambiguous. As you progress in the game, the woman picks up new abilities to help her along the journey through forests, underwater caverns, deserts and towering buildings.

Gris uses stunning visuals to talk about resilience, strength, recovery and hope. You don't "die" in the game -- it's more about trying again, which speaks to the larger theme. This was one of the first games I tried when I bought an iPad. It's a must-play.

best safari games on ipad

Eloh is somehow addicting, relaxing and educational at the same time. It's a visually stunning musical puzzle game that teases your brain without stressing you out. Eloh is perfect for adults, or for teaching your kids without them knowing they're being taught.

Each level features island spirits that you can move. Once you get them into the right spot, tap the red speaker and music will start. The goal is to bounce the "sound waves" off the spirits and hit the spiral icon -- kind of like banking a shot in billiards. It's also ultra satisfying when you get the pattern right and the new song plays.

Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2

Price: $4, $5.

The Monument Valley series is absolutely lovely. In the game, you must help Princess Ida on a mission through Monument Valley -- a world of mazes, crow people and strange, impossible structures. The environment is interactive, requiring you to twist, drag and turn the buildings to find paths for Ida.

Monument Valley 2 has all the stuff you loved about the first game, but stands on its own as an original story and takes a step forward as a more sophisticated narrative and style. In this game, you must guide Ro and her child through Monument Valley. Both games are simultaneously challenging and relaxing.

You can buy Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 in the App Store, or you can check out Monument Valley Plus on Apple Arcade . Monument Valley Plus provides a fully unlocked version of the original game with an extra level.

Ustwo is probably one of my favorite game developers. From the Monument Valley games to Assemble With Care on Apple Arcade, its stuff is always a home run.

best safari games on ipad

Alto's Adventure and Alto's Odyssey

Alto's Adventure is to endless runners what Monument Valley is to puzzle games. The game puts a new twist on sports adventure as you -- as Alto -- snowboard across scenic hills, down gorgeous mountainsides, and through villages with day-to-night transitions. It's all set to a lovely soundtrack as well.

If you liked Alto's Adventure, Snowman put out a follow-up standalone game. This time, Alto and his friends embark on a sandboarding adventure in the desert. Everything you loved about the first game is still there, just in a different environment.

Collect coins, avoid obstacles, and time and land your jumps to gain speed boosts. The more tricks you land, the longer your scarf grows.

You can purchase Alto's Adventure and Alto's Odyssey separately in the App Store, or you can check out Alto's Odyssey: The Lost City , a fully unlocked version of the game with a bonus level, on Apple Arcade.

What Remains of Edith Finch

What Remains of Edith Finch is a dark, emotional journey through the seemingly cursed Finch family tree. Edith Finch, the last living member of her family, travels back home to explore her family's massive home. The house seems to go on forever and is packed with rooms and secret passages to explore.

The game plays out like a series of short stories, giving the player a snapshot of Edith's ancestors. As you progress, Edith maps out her family tree in a notebook. What Remains of Edith Finch is a walking simulator, mystery puzzle game and it's engrossing enough to play in one sitting.

Without giving too much away, the game is dark -- it contains themes of human and animal death, suicide, mental illness, and more. It's a good game, but if you're triggered by any of these topics (or topics that could be related), I might think twice about playing this one.

best safari games on ipad

Solitaire Stories

I've always loved Solitaire, whether it was the built-in PC game or an actual deck of cards. When Solitaire Stories landed on Apple Arcade, I was excited to play digital Solitaire without ads, as well as see Red Games' fresh take on the classic.

Solitaire Stories weaves a narrative into the card game. There are eight stories to unlock with different deck themes and points to earn. The more you play, the more difficult the stories and hands become. You can also opt for the quick play option if you've already played the story through, or just want a round of Solitaire. My favorite story to play was the Maestro story, which dealt with a musician's journey and presented a gorgeous purple aesthetic.

In addition, Solitaire Stories says every hand is beatable, which keeps me trying the same deal over and over until I beat it. Stories are added monthly as well, so you can always experience something new.

best safari games on ipad

Simon's Cat: Story Time

The Simon's Cat franchise -- which began as short animations about a man and his ever-hungry feline friend -- has blossomed since it's 2008 origins. You can find a number of Simon's Cat games in the App Store, but my favorite is Simon's Cat: Story Time on Apple Arcade.

Simon's Cat: Story Time keeps with the well-loved match-three gameplay that lets players unlock chapters of a story. In Story Time, a building site project threatens to shatter the tranquility of Simon and Cat's neighborhood. Simon, Cat, and their friends -- some four-legged -- begin restoring a wasteland of historic parks nearby to protect the community.

Story Time provides a fun narrative and soothing tasks of cleaning up and designing a garden (without breaking a sweat or getting dirty) alongside casual, easy-to-pick-up Candy Crush-style gameplay.

best safari games on ipad

Elder Scrolls: Blades

I'd never picked up any of the Elder Scrolls video games, despite their popularity. When Elder Scrolls: Blades arrived on mobile for free , it felt like the perfect opportunity to try out the series risk free.

Blades is a (mostly) open-world RPG full of adventuring, spells, collecting, crafting and sword fighting. The graphics -- even for mobile -- are just as stunning now as they were in 2018. In the game, you return to your home village and find it all but demolished. Your task is to rebuild the town and defeat the enemies that caused the destruction. Quests are rewarded with gold and other items for crafting.

Your character is customizable, weapons and spells can be upgraded, you can level up and unlock spells, perks and abilities in the skill tree, and the battle gameplay mechanics are simple enough for mobile. There are optional in-app purchases, but I think   As someone new to the series, Elder Scroll: Blades is fun to play on its own, but also made me interested in the console games.

best safari games on ipad

Neo Cab is a choice-based survival game for the digital age embroiled in a mystery. You play as Lina, the last human taxi driver in a world overcome by Capra's corporate plans for a fully automated city. When you move to Los Ojos to reconnect with your best friend, Savy, things don't go as planned when she vanishes.

With no other options, you must keep taking passengers and earn coin to keep your car running and have a place to sleep at night. Riders can also have information about Savy's disappearance. You can use the phone on your dashboard to pan around the in-game map, monitor your emotions and cash balance, driver rating and ride history, keep notes, and search for folks who need rides.

Be careful what you say (or don't say) and keep an eye on your Feelgrid bracelet to stay in tune with your emotions. The bracelet reports a spectrum of emotions by color and color intensity (i.e. angry is red, green is calm, dark red is furious, etc.) The longer you drive, the more difficult it becomes to please every passenger, get paid enough and land a good review. Too many bad reviews and you'll be out of a job. No pressure!

GPT-4 vs. GPT-4o vs. GPT-4o Mini: What's the Difference?

This new browser is a productivity miracle, this hidden google docs feature makes find & replace much more powerful.

Are you hamstrung by a limited data plan? Does your commute take you underground? Either way, you have your reasons for being offline sometimes, but that doesn't mean you have to be bored while stuck without the internet.

Your iPhone and/or iPad are powerful gaming devices, and you don't even need access to the internet to enjoy using them. This is thanks to the iOS games you can play offline, and these are the best offline games for iOS.

1. Alto's Adventure

Alto's Adventure is the infinite runner that'll help you get your skiing fix. Take control of Alto and ski down the slopes of the Andes, picking up coins and avoiding obstacles in the process.

Use touch controls to make Alto jump or grind and rack up points by performing tricks. The entire game plays offline, so enjoy your Andean adventure from your subway car. The game never finishes, so whenever you're waiting without Wi-Fi, this game can keep you entertained.

Download: Alto’s Adventure ($4.99)

2. Alto's Odyssey

The sequel to Alto's Adventure, Alto’s Odyssey, keeps everything you liked about the original and adds a little more. New characters, new locations, new music, and a few new mechanics make this game feel more like an expansion than a true sequel.

Still, if you love Adventure, you’ll love Odyssey too, which focuses more on extreme sports than Adventure focuses on collection.

Download: Alto’s Odyssey ($4.99)

3. Monument Valley

Have you ever seen one of those impossible paintings by M. C. Escher and wanted to explore them? That’s the entire premise of Monument Valley, an indie puzzle game that is made with the Unity engine. You play as Ro, a little girl wandering through colorful buildings and solving intricate puzzles. Your primary tool is your ability to change the perspective of the screen, which unlocks new paths.

The beautiful visuals and mysterious setting make this game one of the most thrilling and immersive experiences you can have on your phone, and you can play it entirely offline. You might never need to use the internet again.

Download: Monument Valley ($3.99, in-app purchases available)

4. Monument Valley 2

In the sequel to Monument Valley, you play as Ro's daughter, navigating the world on a quest to find her. The concept is essentially the same, but the visuals are much more striking, the puzzle-solving much more subtle and nuanced. The beauty of the graphics really shines on a bigger screen, which makes these installments two of the best offline iPad games.

This game has four more chapters than its predecessor and builds upon the first game's features. In some worlds, the game replaces the isometric geometry art style from the first game with more 2D scenes.

Download: Monument Valley 2 ($3.99)

You’re a gooey black ball that just wants to not die. BADLAND is a challenging puzzle game that sends your character through a world of dangerous traps and hazards. Use touch controls to keep your ball afloat, while you watch out for the spinning blades, pointy spikes, and other dangers that will shred it to bits. Various pickups in the world can turn you bigger, smaller, multiply you, and more.

The challenging gameplay will suck you in. The creepy music and beautiful gothic visuals will keep you coming back. There is a local multiplayer component, but all gameplay can be experienced offline.

Download: BADLAND ($0.99)

6. BADLAND 2

BADLAND 2 adds some new mechanics, in particular the ability to move your character both left and right, which takes off some of the pressure. The essence of the game remains, however.

There is a light online multiplayer mode, but like its predecessor, this game really shines offline, on your iPhone, alone with headphones, and immersed in the experience.

Download: BADLAND 2 ($0.99)

7. SevenBloks

This inventive puzzle game is like a mix of Tetris and Sudoku. The rules are simple. You have a 7x6 grid, filled with blocks that have numbers on them, one through seven. Whenever a numbered block is in a column or a row with the same number of block as it features, it clears. If it clears next to a white block, the white block cracks, then breaks to reveal a numbered block.

The goal, like Tetris, is to not lose by having the blocks go over the top and to rack up points while doing it. It’s simple, but endlessly challenging fun. You can experience everything but the leaderboards offline, making it a great game to play while waiting for an appointment, or riding a train through an area with no Wi-Fi.

Download: SevenBloks (Free, in-app purchases available)

8. Mini Metro

Another puzzle game with a beautiful interface, Mini Metro lets you build your own mass transit system. Using maps of real-world cities, you can draw your own lines connecting different stations. You have a limited amount of lines and trains and an ever-increasing number of stations, so you have to place things wisely. If people end up waiting too long at any one station, you lose.

The maps and the layout are simple and beautiful, with an aesthetic that is similar to the minimalist transit maps found in major cities.

Download: Mini Metro ($3.99)

9. Civilization VI

Civilization VI is the latest installment of the longtime franchise where you, as the leader of your people, try to rule the world throughout history. Using real-world leaders, place names, and historical monuments, Civ is a turn-based game that takes hours but is easy to play in quick chunks of time. This makes it perfect for iOS.

Although you can engage in local and online multiplayer, an offline AI campaign is more than enough fun for a long subway or plane ride. If Civilization VI doesn't appeal, there are other ways to play Civilization on your phone .

Download: Civilization VI (Free, in-app purchases available)

10. Stardew Valley

Another port from PC to iOS, Stardew Valley lets you get away from it all and run your own farm in a small town. You can use iPhone and iPad gaming options like Steam Link and Apple Arcade to make the experience easier by using a controller.

Beautiful 8-bit graphics, simple, non-competitive gameplay, and strangely compelling dungeon-crawling make this game one of the best ways to spend a long subway ride. When city life is getting you down, escape to Pelican Town, where all you have to do is harvest the pumpkins on time.

Download: Stardew Valley ($4.99)

11. New York Times Crossword

The New York Times Crossword, edited by Will Shortz, is the gold standard of daily puzzles. Get access to the latest one every day, as well as the entire archive of past crosswords with the New York Times Crossword app. In addition to the puzzles themselves, the app has a number of other features. Keep track of your streaks on the Stats page, go through the Archive to do puzzles from the past, or buy packs of special crosswords.

You can either subscribe to the New York Times Digital Subscription or get a Crossword subscription separately. If you don’t subscribe, you’ll only have access to the daily Mini crossword, which is a treat in and of itself but nowhere near as fun as a full puzzle.

While you need internet access to download new crosswords, you can keep an unlimited number of them offline for playing later. When you do use the internet to download new crosswords, using tips to reduce mobile data usage and save money on the data spend will come in handy.

Download: New York Times Crossword (Free, in-app purchases available)

12. Ticket to Ride

The award-winning board game now fits in your pocket. Ticket to Ride makes you and your friends railroad barons, competing to be the first ones to link up the country by train. The graphics stay true to the original board game, down to the virtual train cards you draw and put in your hand.

You can play in Pass-And-Play mode, which lets you take your turn and pass it to your friends in front of you, but it is also the perfect game to play in solo mode. Each game takes 15 to 20 minutes, perfect for passing the time on a real-life train trip.

Download: Ticket to Ride ($8.99, in-app purchases available)

13. Minecraft

Silly Walks

The battle of polytopia, the elder scrolls: legends.

It's no secret that while the best iPads work super well, they're also rather expensive. Fortunately, if you're into gaming there are plenty of titles available on iOS for free, so you don't have to spend any more money to play them. It's worth noting that many free-to-play games do tend to have in-app purchases. However, we've only included games on this list that aren't pay-to-win. Here are the best free iPad games to check out right now.

Among Us Cafeteria

Remember those in-person parties where you used to play Mafia or Werewolf? Well now, you can still play this kind of social deduction game with your friends whether you're all together or all in separate locations. Among Us is about a group of astronauts attempting to fix their spaceship by completing different tasks. However, some of you are imposters out to sabotage the ship and kill the crew.

If you see something suspicious or come upon a dead body you can call a meeting and everyone can discuss who they think the killer is. If enough votes are cast for one person, they're thrown out the airlock. If it was the imposter, the astronauts win, but if it was an innocent crewmember, the game continues. It's a fun time and since rounds are short, you can easily play for as long or as little as you'd like.

Among Us Cover

Play quick rounds of a popular social deduction game with friends or random players online. It can support up to 15 players, so you can really get everyone to play with you.

Genshin Impact Characters

Welcome to the world of Teyvat, where elemental magic is common, dragons exist, and there are gorgeous locations to discover. You find yourself playing as either a young man or woman with magical abilities who is out to uncover their past. Along the way, you'll encounter several other characters and can add them to your team.

This game does have a gacha system with in-app purchases, but you could play the game just as easily without spending any money. Take on various challenges using your team members and their unique skills either alone or with friends.

Genshin Impact Dragon

Master elemental magic as you explore the land of Teyvat and try to uncover your past.

Pokemon Unite Machamp Snorlax

As we said in our review, Pokémon Unite is a MOBA for everyone . That's because it took the basic mechanics of a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), but kept it simple for players of all ages to enjoy. That being said, there are plenty of chances to show off your veteran MOBA skills as well.

Players engage in 5v5 teams where each player takes charge of one Pokémon. You're out to defeat wild Pokémon and opponent Pokémon and then score the points you earned from these encounters in goals. There are five roles or playing styles that each Pokémon falls under, not to mention each Pokémon has unique skills to help your crew out. The team with the most points at the end of the countdown wins.

Pokemon Unite

Acquire more Pokémon and use their skills to defeat opponents and score points for your team. There are in-app purchases to buy new Pokémon, but it isn't necessarily pay-to-win.

Pewpewlive

Want a quick and simple way to relieve your stress? Why not engage in a pew pew shooter that makes colorful geometric shapes explode? This is a twin-stick shooter that requires plenty of skill to get rid of those shapes without getting injured.

The best part is, there aren't any hidden in-app purchases and no frustrating ads to detract from the game. Just get in there, make those shapes explode, and enjoy. Keep track of your scores on the leaderboards or participate with other players in multiplayer.

Pewpewliveicon

Destroy geometric shapes in this complex twin-stick shooter. There are no ads and no in-app purchases, just a good time.

Astalo Hero

You'll find yourself on a tall platform high in the skies commanding a small fighter. Move on to new locations in this open-sky dungeon crawler to take on new challenges. It's up to you to hack and slash any enemies that appear in this one-button masher and uncover any treasures.

This is a relentless game best meant for those who are looking for a challenge rather than a relaxing time. If you're looking for something less stressful, there are plenty of other options on this list.

Hack and slash your way through enemies in this open-sky dungeon crawler. See how long you can last for.

Kof Hero

The King of Fighters All Star is perfect for anyone who likes a classic fighting game. While there are others to choose from, this one stands out since there are over 200 characters both from previous games and new to this one. That way, there are plenty of different fighting styles to entertain yourself whenever you jump in.

Play on your own in arena mode, or if you have someone you like to play with, enter multiplayer or co-op mode. The visuals are fun to watch and the iPad screen is well suited to letting you see all of your opponents. Be warned that there are in-app purchases, but they aren't necessary for enjoying the game.

Kof All Star Icon

Prove your fighting prowess by beating up everyone you see on the streets.

Dashy Crashy

Ever been stuck in traffic and just wish you could speed past anyone and everyone? Well, now you can do it without risk to yourself or your car in Dashy Crashy. Your car only knows one direction and that's forward. Swipe left or right to change lanes and avoid any other drivers in your path. There are also fun items to collect to increase your score.

The art style is vibrant and pleasant to look at and there's enough variation between night and day to keep things interesting. You'll unlock more cars as you go, with each one having different abilities to help you switch it up a bit.

Dashy Crashy Icon

Slide into different lanes to avoid hitting obstacles as your car goes careening down the freeway. Each car not only has a different style but different abilities as well.

Casual Meta Hero

While some games are all about moving fast and fighting, others are more relaxing and offer puzzles like Casual Metaphysics. This self-proclaimed "spiritual game" provides plenty of different challenges to get your mind going in a more restful way. As you progress, puzzles become harder, giving you something to work towards.

The visuals are very unique and make it stand out from other puzzles games on iOS. You can play on your own or against a friend in two-player mode.

Casual Meta Icon

This "spiritual puzzle" game gives you interesting challenges that you can solve on your own or in two-player mode.

Oco Hero

With its gorgeous-yet-simple visuals, OCO provides a minimalist platforming experience where players must guide a small white square through an available pathway on a circular level. It requires precision and quick timing to master but can be a fun experience for anyone.

You'll learn to strategize while listening to a chill soundtrack and can even create and upload your own levels for others to play through. Get involved in the creator community and enjoy this unique platformer.

Oco Icon

This minimalist game combines vibrant round levels with simple to play but hard to master platforming elements.

Angry Birds Ar Hero

Remember back several years when Angry Birds was new and took the mobile world by storm? Nowadays, these are more like classics from the early mobile period, but fortunately, there's a new version of the game that takes it into the modern era. Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs uses your phone camera to see levels in locations you're currently in. Launch a 3D bird straight ahead and attempt to knock down as many pigs as possible.

The best part is that you can walk around the level and attack the structure from different angles to best increase your score. Just make sure you have plenty of room to play.

Angry Birds Ar Icon

Try a new spin on the classic Angry Birds game by bringing the levels into augmented reality. Launch those birds and bring down those pig structures to get points.

Asphalt Xtreme Hero

Unlike other Asphalt games, Xtreme is all about that off-roading experience, whether that means sliding through sandy dunes, racing past forest ruins, or tearing up an old industrial road. Take control of your favorite cars, unlock new ones, and level up their handling stats.

You'll find your way racing through several different locations and will need to get the hang of your car's performance in order to do well. Use nitro to go faster, but do your best not to crash into anything.

Asphalt Xtreme Icon

Join in some crazy off-road races that include some of the prettiest cars ever.

PUBG Mobile: Aftermath

PUBG running outside

You currently cannot play Fortnite due to the Apple Vs. Epic court case . However, you can play one of Fortnite's biggest competitors: PUBG Mobile. It's also a battle royale where 99 players drop into a large space, grab weapons, and attempt to be the last ones standing.

PUBG Mobile has a more realistic art style than Fortnite but it's still a whacky experience for anyone who likes battle royales. Play on your own or with friends in the 4v4 modes.

Pubg Icon

Jump from a plane, land on the ground, and immediately look for weapons and loot. You'll need to fight to be the last team standing.

Silly Walks Hero

In this crazy adventure, all of the foods and inanimate objects you find in a home have come to life. You play as a piece of food with legs like a hotdog, bowl of noodles, or pizza who's out to save his friends from the evil blender. To do this, you'll need to make your way past baddies, collect items, and complete level challenges.

This is a truly silly game with memorable visuals and goof characters. In app-purchases aren't overbearing so you can enjoy this game without ever needing to open your wallet.

Silly Walks Icon

Take on the role of a piece of food who must travel from one place to another in order to save his friends from the evil blender.

Polytopia Hero

If you're a fan of civilization games like Age of Empires or well, Civilization, then The Battle of Polytopia will be right up your alley. What makes this game so good is that it doesn't take forever. It takes the basic elements from this genre and boils them down into turn-based combat that only lasts for 30 turns. Use that time to explore the map, level up, and advance your society before engaging in combat with other tribes.

The Battle of Polytopia offers simple visuals with strong geometric shapes surrounded by vibrant colors. It's a visual treat while your mind works to strategize. Best of all, it won't take nearly as long as several other civilization games.

Polytopia Logo

A civilization game that doesn't have to take very long. Strategize, advance your civilization, and explore the map in 30 turns or less.

Elder Scrolls Legends Screenshot

As we said in our The Elder Scrolls: Legends review , this game breathes fresh air into a stale genre. This is the kind of game made for fans of Magic the Gathering and Hearthstone as it's a deck builder card game rather than an open-world adventure.

Players are thrown into the middle of a story where they must flee for their lives from some cultists. You'll need to engage in card battles to progress, acquire more cards, and become stronger. What makes this game different is that there is a two-laned battlefield, which means that fighters in a given field can only go up against an opponent in their field. You can spend money to get more cards, but it's also enjoyable without reaching for your credit card.

Elderscrolllegendsicon

A deck-building card game in the world of The Elder Scrolls that takes cues from Magic the Gathering and Hearthstone.

Gaming that's easy on the wallet

The best iPads can help you entertain yourself without needing to spend any money thanks to these free iOS games. If you're not sure where to start, I highly recommend checking out Among Us. Rounds go really quickly, making it perfect to play while waiting for the doctor or when playing with a bunch of friends.

If you're looking for something you can really sink your teeth into, Genshin Impact will be of interest. You'll be exploring a vast open world filled with elemental magic, legendary creatures, and plenty of different locations to explore.

Finally, looking for something a bit more classic? Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs takes the original 2D game and brings it into 3D with Augmented Reality. Shoot birds at the 3D structures that appear onscreen and see how well you score.

Since the introduction of the Apple iPad in 2010, the tablet has proven its place in the computing landscape, with its gorgeous display lending itself well to all types of digital content. And while other tablet manufacturers haven't found nearly as much success, the iPad continues to thrive with each new iteration.

The 14 Most Graphically Demanding iPhone Games

Beautiful graphics are not limited to consoles and PCs, as these graphically impressive iOS games demonstrate.

Some of that success is attributed to the quality of the apps available to download from the Apple Store. Because, unlike their Android counterparts, which more often than not were built for phones and stretched to fill the tablet form factor, the apps built for iPad take advantage of its extra real estate. The same goes for the games, the best of which offer immersive mobile experiences. Here are some of the very best available today.

Updated November 4, 2023, by Chris Sanfilippo: Our latest update adds three unique games that will play well on the iPad: Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, Get Over It+, and Samurai Shodown for iOS.

Cooking Mama: Cuisine!

The Cooking Mama series gained a Michelin star reputation over various delicious entries on the Nintendo DS, 3DS, and Wii consoles. These days, you can bake, fry, dredge, and more with your favorite home chef in the iOS game Cooking Mama: Cuisine!

This sequel sticks to the tried and true Cooking Mama formula. You'll cook dishes via minigames based on peeling potatoes, flipping burger patties, and other kitchen tasks. And while this gameplay may sound dull to some, it's a calming experience that fits the iPad perfectly !

Get Over It+

Mobile gaming often caters to a casual audience looking for relaxation rather than frustration. But in the Apple Arcade game Get Over It+ , the frustration is the fun. This poignant experience is inspired by a flash game called Sexy Hiking, in which you must use a hammer to fling yourself up a mountain. Sounds simple, right? Think again.

Get Over It+ reimagines Sexy Hiking's concept by trapping you in a pot from the waist down. Like Sexy Hiking, your only tool of mobility is a hammer. The graphics look much better than any flash game, a boon for the iPad. However, what sells the game is creator Bennett Foddy's narration, which curates Get Over It as an exploration of tenacity in the face of adverse challenges.

Night In The Woods

At first glance, Night in the Woods might look like a children's game with its cutesy, minimalistic visuals. But anyone who has taken the time to experience its coming-of-age tale would know that it targets a much older audience.

It is a story-driven adventure game that explores some very mature issues, like depression , through the lens of its memorable cast of anthropomorphic characters. Night In The Woods launched on PC and consoles in 2017, but the iOS version plays just as well on an iPad.

iPads are multi-functional devices. They can run various apps, from word processors to triple-A games. However, many utilize iPads as their primary reading devices. Reading engages our imaginations in ways video games never could. However, what if you're a reader looking for a more interactive experience?

Lifeline+ is an engaging text-adventure game for the 21st century. This sci-fi journey is about a student abandoned on a foreign planet after a horrible crash landing . Lifeline uses push notifications to create an immersive adventure outside of the app. It's one of the best iPad games for readers looking for a new tale!

Sky: Children Of The Light

Billed as an open-world social adventure game, Sky: Children of the Light is the latest game by thatgamecompany. However, unlike their previous releases, which were published by Sony and launched exclusively on the PS3, this one debuted on iOS devices .

The game lets you explore a beautiful fantasy world where you'll encounter other players and unlock special abilities from the world's seven realms. In addition, Sky heavily employs a flying mechanic that should feel right at home to players of Journey. It's the best iPad game when you wish to connect with others.

Zen Pinball Party

Going on epic adventures in far-off lands has its allure. But what if you'd instead enjoy an arcade-like experience? In that case, you'll love the Apple Arcade exclusive Zen Pinball Party ! This easy-to-pick-up pinball simulator lets you whack flippers and tilt the machine with taps and swipe s.

This game has plenty of unique pinball machines, including Williams Classics, Zen Originals, and licensed machines like the Star Wars Pinball series ! Various gameplay modes, live events, and tournaments keep gameplay fresh. If you're a certified Pinball Wizard, this is the best iPad game!

When Hitman Go was announced, the first question on everyone's lips was how exactly the new team at Square Enix Montreal would translate the main series's open-ended stealth game into a turn-based puzzle game. It turns out the two genres work together surprisingly well.

Hitman Go presents as a board game , with players controlling Agent 47 through grid-based levels populated by enemies, all represented by miniature figurines. The combo of simple gameplay and engaging art style makes it the best iPad game for long-time Hitman fans and those new to the series.

Long before it would take the world by storm with the brilliant Hades , indie developer Supergiant Games had thrown its hat into the game development ring with Bastion . Released in 2011, the action RPG laid the foundation for Supergiant's subsequent games, including Transistor and Pyre.

16 Best Apple Arcade RPGs

Deck builders, survival sims, turn-based combat and more: Apple Arcade is home to great RPG-like experiences of all types.

The outstanding presentation, including fully-voiced narration and a beautiful hand-painted art style , makes Bastion unique. This stellar presentation is why it remains one of the best iPad games from a purely aesthetic standpoint.

Dead Cells+

iPad owners who want a hardcore gaming experience will love the roguelike Dead Cells+ . This dungeon-crawling action game places you in the role of The Beheaded, a warrior revived from the dead who can manipulate other dead cells . You'll collect more cells by killing enemies, which you can exchange for weapons and skills.

Dead Cells+ is a game that works best with a Bluetooth controller . However, if you use touchscreen controls, the Assist Mode includes various options to make gameplay feel less cumbersome . In short, Dead Cells+ is one of the best iPad games for roguelike fanatics and newcomers!

Samurai Shodown

Did you know your Netflix account provides access to more than film and television shows? The streaming platform also offers free mobile games. One such example is Samurai Shodown , a mobile port of SNK's 2019 reboot.

Samurai Shodown is a faithful mobile adaptation featuring all the stages, mechanics, and characters as its console forbearer (minus console DLC, like Baiken from Guilty Gear). Furthermore, the reboot's distinct art style stays intact. The game's touch controls are very straightforward, albeit a little wonky, making the absence of Bluetooth controls a setback. Still, SamSho for iOS is an excellent addition to any hardcore fighting game fan's mobile library.

Fantasian is an RPG produced and written by Hironobu Sakaguchi of Final Fantasy fame . The music was likewise composed by fellow Final Fantasy alum Nobuo Uematsu .

This title is arguably the best iPad game for RPG lovers. Fantasian's gorgeous environments are based on handcrafted dioramas photographed and transferred into the game. But the real sell is its gameplay, which combines classic JRPG elements with quality-of-life features that keep it accessible to mobile gamers.

Pokemon Unite

The Pokemon Company is not afraid to experiment with mobile releases since its immense success with Pokemon Go in 2016. And with Pokemon Unite , they've made the foray into MOBAs.

This free-to-play title lets you assemble a team of Pokemon and use them to battle other players in its battle arenas. MOBAs are traditionally a competitive game that's difficult for newcomers. But Unite keeps its mechanics simple, making it the best iPad game for Pokemon fans new to MOBAs .

Skate City proves that a skateboarding game does not have to be as complex as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater to be fun and challenging. On the contrary, much like other 2D-skating games like OlliOlli, Skate City gives players challenges and trials to overcome while exploring skate parks worldwide.

This game's uncomplicated touch controls make it the best iPad game for X Games fans. However, with progressively higher goalposts and many tricks to learn , Skate City never feels stale or too simplistic.

Remember the childhood game 'The Floor Is Lava,' where you would pretend that your living room carpet is a pool of deadly molten rock? Hot Lava for iOS brings this pastime to life with gorgeous graphics and enhanced obstacles akin to an episode of Ninja Warrior !

Hot Lava is the best iPad game for those who want to get the most from its expanded screen. And you can make it through Hot Lava's courses adequately with touch controls. But competitive players looking for the fastest times will notice more immediate reactions and ease from a handheld Bluetooth controller .

NBA 2K23: Arcade Edition

2K Games is responsible for many of the best professional sports games for consoles, including PGA Tour 2K, WWE 2K, and the venerable NBA 2K series. But how does a realistic basketball game translate to mobile devices? The iOS-exclusive NBA 2K23: Arcade Edition proves these mechanics translate well.

NBA 2K23: AE shines due to its malleable controls . Players new to the series can use the game's three-button control scheme and AI Assist mechanic . Seasoned players can use manual controls to perform specialty shots and maneuvers with little hassle. It's, without a doubt, the best iPad game for basketball lovers!

Mario Kart Tour

There are many racing games for iOS. Some, like the Horizon Chase series, offer a detailed, technical experience. But for casual racers, Mario Kart Tour is the best iPad game. And while the game has been around for a few years, its removal of predatory gacha elements in October 2022 is worth trying this free-to-play game.

RELATED: Mario Kart 8: Best Kart And Driver Combinations

Two standout features of Mario Kart Tour are its content and controls. Cups launch biweekly and feature classic courses from past Mario Kart games . Furthermore, its impressive control scheme replicates Mario Kart mechanics, like drifts, tricks, and items, with the flick of a finger !

The Room Two+

Escape room-themed games have become more common in the past decade, with titles like Zero Escape and Escape Academy as prominent examples. However, one indie breakout that has catapulted into success is The Room series. These titles lead you into puzzle rooms while unraveling eerie paranormal mysteries !

The Room Two+ makes its escape room experience accessible for mobile devices. For instance, its straightforward touch controls are perfect for the iPad. Furthermore, the game's various locations will look striking on the iPad's high-res screen ! It's easily the best iPad game for escape room lovers!

Mortal Kombat Mobile

Plenty of fighting game ports have been launched for iOS over the years, with various levels of success. Some titles, like SNK's The King Of Fighters-i 2012, offer console-level ports with a scaled-down virtual controller. That's great for smaller devices like an iPhone. However, performing button combinations on a tablet can get tricky.

Thankfully, Mortal Kombat Mobile offers a fun, dynamic, and strategic fighting game without complex controls. The title has all the bells and whistles MK fans will love, including high-res graphics , fan-favorite characters , and gore-tastic fatalities ! It's the best iPad game for fans of the series.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught

Mortal Kombat's storyline shifted significantly with the introduction of Liu Kang's new timeline in Mortal Kombat 1 . However, you can experience a new story in MK11's dark and gritty universe in the new mobile RPG Mortal Kombat: Onslaught . Onslaught chronicles Shinnok's attempt to escape the Neatherrealm and become the conqueror of all realms and the MK heroes' efforts to stop him.

MK: Onslaught features the first mobile-exclusive cinematic story in MK history, making it a fantastic game to experience on the iPad's hi-res screen. Combat (or "kombat"?) is automatic and uses special moves you can activate at the push of a button. So, you don't need to be an MK veteran to enjoy Onslaught's tactical, gory fun!

Initially released in 2018, Among Us didn't hit the peak of its popularity until the COVID lockdowns of 2020, when casual gamers were stuck at home and in dire need of something else to play aside from Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

It's no surprise why Among Us took off during that time. This deep space romp combines collaborative gameplay with tools of deception , the perfect ingredients for a fun and raucous virtual game night. In short, Among Us is the best iPad game to play with family and friends!

Of course, the problem with having so many options is that you often don’t know where to begin. Luckily, we’ve rounded up the best iPad games you can download and play right now. You may also want to check out our favorite iPhone games , in case you fancy some smartphone action.

Revolution’s long-awaited follow-up to their 1994 dystopian point-and-click classic  Beneath a Steel Sky ,  Beyond a Steel Sky is a puzzle-based adventure that truly lives up to its pedigree. You play once again as Robert Foster, who, in the search for a kidnapped child, is led to Union City, an ostensible utopia where people are monitored by a supposedly benign artificial intelligence (A.I.) — sound familiar? Aside from this interesting premise, the game looks absolutely gorgeous, benefitting from art direction courtesy of Dave Gibbons, the artist responsible for the Watchmen graphic novel. Not only does it look great, but the gameplay is laudably complex and rewarding, with the gameworld responding to your actions and with its puzzles offering multiple solutions.

Love Stranger Things ? Oxenfree  provides you with another way to get a Stranger Things -style kick. It’s a supernatural mystery thriller in which you play as teenager Alex, who, along with her friends, unwittingly opens a “ghostly gate” during a party on an abandoned military base. You then set about exploring the base, with in-game conversations and puzzles helping you along the way. It sounds fairly simple at first glance, but with multiple plot threads and a uniquely haunting graphical style, the game is pretty absorbing.

Offering a slash-em-up/RPG hybrid, Hyper Light Drifter is one of the best adventure games you’re likely to find on iPad. It features an enticing (if you’re of a certain age) 16-bit graphical style, through which you explore a forgotten land in a bid to cure yourself of a seemingly incurable illness. The game’s world is vast and beautiful, containing threatening enemies, strange technologies, hazards, and long-buried ruins. Beyond avoiding pitfalls and predators, you can also upgrade your weapons and skills and find new equipment. If that weren’t enough, the soundtrack is surprisingly affecting and powerful, and along with the fantastic visuals and gameplay, it will keep you coming back for more.

Yes, you may be aware that  Civilization VI is one of the best turn-based strategy games you can buy for the PC, but did you know that you can also download (and buy) it on iPad? Well, you do now, and not only is this simple fact enough on its own to make budding strategists rejoice, but we’re pleased to report that the iOS port of the game is remarkably faithful to the original PC game. This means you can build all manner of complex civilizations and guide them toward growth and success, while the tutorial system will help anyone new to the series get to grips with all of its nuances. It is fairly pricey for an iPad game, but you can play 60 turns for free to get a taste of whether it’s for you.

Read our full  Civilization VI  review

Sure, you could check out  Call of Duty: Mobile  or some other mega-franchise name, but we’re giving the attention here to  PUGB.  It’s arguably the most hi-octane massively multiplayer online shooting game, with the iOS version letting you take part in 100-player battle royales, four-versus-four death matches, and the surreal zombie mode, where you have to fight against hordes of the undead (or play as the undead). The iOS version also includes the full range of maps  PUGB  offers, with each area confronting the player with different environments to navigate and learn. Assuming you have a recent enough iPad, the game also looks highly impressive, with the Unreal 4 engine giving it the kind of sharp realism that Fortnite  lacks.

Here’s an open-world adventure game that proves you don’t have to own a Nintendo console to enjoy Zelda-esque gameplay. Set in the lush world of Teyvat, you’re tasked with exploring its heights and depths in search of the gods of the seven elements. You’re given an impressive amount of free reign to wander from one corner of the game world to another, and you can climb mountains, swim in water, and glide in the air. The game’s combat system is also satisfyingly deep, and you can cast a variety of spells from seven elements, bolstering your use of your faithful sword. As a bonus, you can also play with friends, or you can just sit back and bask in the game’s beauty.

You may have heard your friends talking about  League of Legends , and with good reason. Billed as a mobile online battle arena (MOBA) title, the game offers an addictive balance of strategy and action. It pits teams of players against each other as they vie to capture each other’s bases, with players capable of performing a variety of actions along the way in order to weaken their opponents. You can set traps, cast spells, or fight in hand-to-hand combat, with different characters possessing different strengths and weaknesses. It rewards tactical thinking and forward-planning, but you can also be pretty gung-ho as well if that’s more to your taste. Unlike certain other big iPad games,  League of Legends  is entirely free to play.

Oceanhorn ($8)

If you can’t get enough of action-adventure RPGs, then Oceanhorn is another great example of the genre to try. In true RPG fashion, it sets you off in search of something — in this case, your father — who hasn’t returned after journeying to find the mythical Oceanhorn. It’s fairly similar to the Zelda series in that the gameplay offers a balanced mix of puzzles and combat, while the sailing element recalls The Wind Waker . Most importantly of all, the world you inhabit is invitingly rich and colorful, meaning that exploring its nooks and crannies is always a joy. If you finish it and want more, you can also turn to the similarly excellent Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm.

Among Us!  is a unique online multiplayer that plays almost like a very good board game. Its premise is that you’re on-board a spaceship preparing for takeoff, yet one of your fellow players is actually an alien imposter that’s trying to sabotage your plans and ultimately kill you all. The game unfolds with players completing a variety of tasks in order to prep their ship while also taking steps to discover who the imposter may be and vote it off the spacecraft. At the same time, the imposter needs to disguise its own moves while also surreptitiously hindering progress. The formula is fairly straightforward, but that’s precisely why it’s such an engrossing game. For four to 10 players.

An iPad may not seem like the most natural home for an arcade-style racing game, yet  Asphalt 9: Legends  works exceedingly well on Apple’s tablet. It brings in a new TouchDrive control scheme that simplifies steering for you so that you can focus on the more exhilarating aspects of racing, while it also lets you customize on-screen buttons in case you want to drive the old-fashioned way. Beyond its accessible control system, the game offers over 80 tracks in real-world locations and a selection of some of the most desirable cars on the planet, from such manufacturers as Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bugatti. It can be played in a variety of multiplayer modes, or you can enjoy the single-player Career mode, which spans more than 800 races across 60 seasons.

Samorost 3 ($5)

Here’s a point-and-click game with a difference. You play as a space gnome who has, for some inexplicable reason, happened to chance upon a magic flute. You then set off on a journey across nine alien worlds in order to discover the origins of this instrument, while along the way, you encounter a variety of puzzles, challenges, and colorful creatures. The game has a very whimsical sense of humor that will appeal to many, and while the lack of hints can make some of the puzzles a little head-scratching, the game’s art, sound, and overall aesthetic make the whole experience more than rewarding.

We’re practically living in a dystopia these days, so what better game to commemorate our predicament than  Ministry of Broadcast ? It’s a puzzle-focused platformer in the mold of  Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus or Flashback , where you have to help your protagonist reunite with his family. What makes this more interesting than the average 2D platformer is that his quest takes place within the confines of a state-sponsored TV program, The Wall Show . If that sounds intriguing to you, you’d be right, and the game’s head-scratching puzzles lead to some interesting story twists.

If Found … ($5)

We’re living in a golden age for story-based titles that really transcend the conventions of the bog-standard “video game.”  If Found…  is one of these titles, with the game being an interactive visual novel in which you play out the diary of protagonist Kasio. The game is set in 1993, with Kasio returning home to Ireland from college and spending winter break with her not-always-supportive family. The twist is that a black hole is destroying the world, while your swiping of the screen irretrievably deletes passages from Kasio’s diary. It’s a very unique premise, complemented by some great artwork and a very touching storyline.

Slayaway Camp ($3)

Here’s a highly original iPad game that mixes puzzle and strategy elements while also paying tribute to B-rated horror films of yore. It features grid-based gameplay in which you play a serial killer who has to work his way around each level, killing people. (Note: This game is not for children!) Each level assumes the format of a different “videotape” that pays tribute to slasher and horror flicks in different ways. You have to plan your movement through each videotape carefully, avoiding land mines and other hazards while also avoiding the police. Yes, the game is a little perverse (in a kind of cutesy way), but it certainly isn’t shallow. It also features a suitably retro hair metal soundtrack, replete with moody synths and gut-wrenching guitar solos.

If you’re a big fan of indie games, you may have played the excellent 2010 title  Limbo.  Well, this is from the same development team (Playdead), and it provides yet another excellent example of how to marry puzzle-platforming with a deeply atmospheric art style. You play as a boy who is trying to navigate what seems like a post-apocalyptic world, which is full of strange — and dangerous — creatures, not to mention a large smattering of deadly dangers. There’s not much to say about it other than that since the game is minimalistic but in a very engaging and affecting way. Yes, it may be a little short, but it’s entirely gripping while it lasts.

Downwell

Downwell is a challenging game to play but a very simple one to learn. You are falling down a well, hitting platforms as you go. You can find power-ups, gun down enemies, and continue to keep your character safe while keeping an eye out for anything that helps you. You need to land to replenish your ammo and can only shoot below you, hovering in the air for an extra second if needed!

2 Badland 2

Badland 2

Playing as a little black ball of goo, you are trying to survive in BADLAND 2, a platforming puzzle game that has you navigating through a world full of hazards and traps, hoping to avoid them and make it through. You can find objects in the world that make you bigger, create more of you, shrink you down and more, in hopes of helping you in your goal to survive.

3 Asphalt 9: Legends

Asphalt 9: Legends

A beautiful racing game, Asphalt 9 Legends is also full of challenges. You will race your car through various mission sets. With an exceptional collection of over 150 cars that you can drive, players rarely get bored. It takes a while to collect that many vehicles! There are a bunch of different driving techniques that you will need to master to keep yourself ahead of your opponents. Oh, and the graphics is absolutely stunning, you'll spend hours looking at the beautiful car models that the devs made.

4 Run Sausage Run!

Run Sausage Run!

If you are looking for a fun and wacky platformer, Run Sausage Run is a great choice. You play as a cartoon sausage, looking to run around and avoid a bunch of different dangers - looking to avoid getting cooked, cut, splatted and otherwise killed. You can run forward or duck down and run slower, but avoiding obstacles is your main goal so make good decisions as you flee!

5 Star Wars: KOTOR II

Star Wars: KOTOR II

Star Wars: KOTOR II takes you into the world of Star Wars, where you can become a Republic soldier, pick your class, create an army, and start commanding them! It’s a turn-based game, so you will need to choose a target and then your character will do the rest. What will hold a firm grip is the story, which might not be as good as the one in the first KOTOR, but it's still very captivating and well-written. If you're a fan of either Star Wars, or a good RPG, this is a no-brainer, even though you'll have to pay a few bucks/euros to get it.

6 Angry Birds 2

Angry Birds 2

Angry Birds 2 was released in 2015 and was the sequel to the first Angry Birds game series released in 2009. As expected, it features new mechanics and improved controls that add more fun to the gameplay. Although it is relatively old it's still one of the best no wifi games for iPhone that you can play in 2024.

Just like in the original Angry Birds, you launch small birds at the target you are about to destroy. Targets are usually a group of pigs that sit on several platforms, or under them.

One notable improvement in Angry Birds 2 is that you don't have to shoot the birds in a specific order. Having a deck of birds allows you to shoot them in any order as long as you defeat the enemies.

7 Smash Hit

Smash Hit

One of the great features of Smash Hit is cool graphics and harmonious background sounds.

You play a game of hitting glass obstacles with metal balls. To get extra orbs, you must break as many prisms as possible. The non-stop pacing of the Smash Hit makes it really fun.

In addition, the colorful passages offer a realistic environment that makes playing Smash Hit even more fun. Of course, it's the realistic destruction physics that sells it. That, and the fact that it's completely free, and it doesn't have any of the annoying ads.

8 Super Hexagon

Super Hexagon

Super Hexagon borrows a lot from Hexagon, but with a few extra tweaks to make it more colorful.

A small triangle rotates around the screen. You have to control its movements by clicking on either side of the screen. When this happens, large hexagonal shapes appear and try to get closer to you. Each shape has one or two exit points that prevent the line from crushing them.

You must prevent your triangle from colliding with these hexagons by constantly rotating it, and keeping an eye on any other shapes that may appear on the screen.

9 Shadow Fight 2

Shadow Fight 2

Shadow Fight 2 is a real treat for all martial arts fans. It is a great combination of a classic fighting game and an RPG. The developer has included interactive graphics and 2D animation to make Shadow Fight 2 a bit more realistic.

It sets you up against computer-controlled opponents and you must defeat your opponents in the best of 3 matches to win prizes or upgrade your arsenal. Successful players can win gold or upgrade their swords, nunchucks, or any other classic weapon they use.

10 Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter is part of the famous PC and console franchise developed by Bethesda. It is especially popular for its tragicomedy and humor based on the apocalypse. Of course, that's just a big part of it, story and a believable world are true motifs behind all of it.

To play the game, you need to take care of your vault in the Fallout universe. Your duty includes organizing and managing the people who live in your vault. You provide all the needs of your characters, including food and water.

And in return, they should work for you to help you generate the energy needed to run everything. To ensure maximum efficiency, each character has a special task

11 Minecraft

Minecraft

Minecraft is one of the most popular games ever made. It is all about mining, building your own world, exploration and adventure. You explore some of the most exotic places around the world, defeat zombies, and build shelters to keep you safe.

If you love the thrill and freedom that comes with living in your fantasy world, where you can create things, then Minecraft is the game for you. It's been quite popular in the last 15 years, and although a lot of people consider it a dead title, they can't be further away from the truth. It's still being updated, which means that the developers love their little wonder, and won't give up on it.

If you decide to play it, we have an explanation of how to make an enchantment table in Minecraft and all you need to know about Smite in Minecraft amongst a sea of guides that we have created.

12 Unblock Me

Unblock Me

Unblock Me is an offline game that doesn't need pesky wi-fi, with over 16,000 puzzles to keep you entertained.

Essentially, it offers you blocks and empty spaces. In addition to equal sizes, each of the blocks is unique in its own way. You have to move the blocks from their starting locations by moving them through the empty spaces until you get to an exit zone.

If you successfully complete a level, Unblock Me will offer you a new, more difficult level. Your chances of success in more difficult levels depend on how well you do with the previous ones.

13 Plants vs Zombies

Plants vs Zombies

If you like creepy things, then Plants vs. Zombies will be very interesting for you. It focuses on tower defense against zombies using plants as your towers.

Plants have unique abilities that can repel zombie attacks. You must grow them in your garden so that they can kill zombies that approach your house. If the plants aren't strong enough to stop the zombies, they will eventually enter your house and eat your brain. Plants are very different, so you need to measure the strength of each plant relative to the strength of the zombies.

Threes!

Threes! is very similar to the other famous puzzle game, 2048, except it's a bit more difficult and fun. In fact, the developers of 2048 were inspired by Threes!, and they admitted that they borrowed a lot of concepts from Threes! immediately after its release.

Threes! comes with a fancy design and realistic animations. It features numbered tiles on a 4x4 grid. The mission is to move the tiles together so that the result is a multiple of three.

15 Where's My Water?

Where's My Water?

Where's My Water is an addictive puzzle game that doesn't require a wi-fi connection, developed by Disney Studios.

In 'Where's My Water?', you have to make paths along the muddy ground to create a channel through which the accumulated water can flow so that the alligator can pour. To make the gameplay more exciting, the developer has included piping and other complex machinery that the water must interact with as it is directed towards the inlet before it is ready for an alligator to take a bath.

Badland

Badland is one of the few games to win prestigious awards in the same year it was released. Its interactive interface, combined with its sound and visual design elements, is one of the reasons Badland won Apple's Game of the Year award way back in 2013. On top of that, you can play it without wi-fi access, which is pretty rare by today's standards.

You take on the role of Clony, a small black creature flying around a beautiful world. The beautiful world is full of rotating mechanisms and many other dangerous destructible objects that Clony must overcome.

You control the game with a single-touch gesture where you simply press and hold the screen to lift your character and release it by releasing your finger.

17 Pocket Mortys

Pocket Mortys

Pocket Mortys is a Rick and Morty-themed RPG that borrows a lot from Pokemon Go. Rick is the main character, and you and Morty have to enter the multiverse. Rick uses a Pokedex-like contraption to collect Mortys from other universes and uses those Mortys to fight his way through the game.

What makes Pocket Mortys easier to understand is the ease with which you can identify Mortys, which basically looks like paper, rock, or scissors. Except for your own Morty, of course.

Apart from being different from others, your Morty also doesn't have any significant advantages or disadvantages compared to others.

18 Piano Tiles 2

Piano Tiles 2

Piano Tiles 2 is a single-player mobile game where black tiles appear randomly at the top of the screen and are distributed vertically. Black tiles also appear next to white ones.

Your goal is to click on the black tiles as soon as they appear. As you progress, the flow of tiles gradually increases, but you should only try to click on the black ones. Each time you hit them, you automatically create piano music, adding more color and glam to the game.

Piano Tiles is effective in improving the player's cognitive function, as well as improving vision and reaction time.

19 Dead Trigger 2

Dead Trigger 2

Your mission in Dead Trigger is to destroy zombies using a variety of realistic weapons. While killing zombies is the ultimate mission, there are plenty of other objectives in the game.

In order to improve yourself, you need to perform exceptionally well at the lower levels so that you can win money. You can then use that money to buy weapons and other things that will help you gain an edge. In its essence, this is a bloody zombie shooter, that we wouldn't recommend to kids, but grown-ups will have fun with it.

20 Flipflop Solitaire

Flipflop Solitaire

Flipflop Solitaire is a single-player card game based on Spider Solitaire. But unlike Spider Solitaire, which has ten stacks, Slap Solitaire only has five. This improves its interface on mobile devices as the game adopts portrait mode. In portrait mode, you can arrange the cards in ascending or descending order.

Flipflop Solitaire is simple at first but gets more complex and challenging as you progress. One of the best features is that asking for help does not incur any penalties. There is a hint button that you can always press when you face an obstacle.

21 Grimvalor

Grimvalor

An action platformer in which the player plays the role of a warrior, clearing the ruined kingdom of Vallaris from darkness and hordes of enemies. Grimvalor offers fast-paced combat, atmospheric locations, and a ton of strange, dangerous creatures. You have to improve your combat skills, collect and improve equipment, and also increase the level of your character's abilities. Some players call Grimvalor 2D Dark Souls on mobiles, and we have to agree this is quite accurate description.

More importantly, you can play it offline, without wi-fi on the go, making trips much easier to handle.

22 The Dark Book

The Dark Book

Adventure RPG with a dark world where you have to go a long way in search of a magic book. You will destroy many monsters and also meet friendly characters who will guide you on the right route in your quest.

The main character is a warrior in the form of a skeleton, which must be developed by adding new abilities and improving skills. In The Dark Book, you can not only fight with melee weapons but also cast spells. Armour and means of fighting evil spirits break down pretty quickly, so you need to constantly look for new things.

23 Cover Fire

Cover Fire

A shooter in which you need to control a squad of fighters that are fighting against the militant corporation Tetracorp. Exterminate a global threat with your marksmanship and tactical cunning. The story campaign is based on the Cover Fire comic. There is a vast arsenal of weapons to unlock along the way. It is also necessary to develop the members of your team, increasing their level. It offers over 60 missions and boss fights, but more importantly, it's a game that you can play with no wi-fi on your iPhone and iPad.

24 Soul Knight

Soul Knight

Action game in an eight-bit retro style, where the player will have to explore dungeons, destroy monsters and look for treasures. Soul Knight offers to choose one of 14 character classes: knight, robber, assassin, elf, alchemist, magician, and others. Each hero has their unique abilities and characteristics.

The dungeon has three levels, each with five missions to complete. In gloomy rooms, you will have to destroy waves of enemies in order to open passages further. In addition to opponents, there are boxes with useful items and traps in the locations.

The levels are randomly generated, which helps you not to lose interest when you play it again. At the same time, remembering the location of objects and the correct route will not work.

25 Terraria

Terraria

If, for some reason, you haven't played Terraria yet, do not waste any more time and download it immediately. Terraria is a dangerous world where you can find many different traps, monsters, and bosses. In fact, there are 400+ different types of enemies, as well as many complex bosses. You can explore 20 biomes and meet 20+ NPCs who can sell you various armour and weapons that will assist you on your journey. On top of that, you can create beautiful buildings here using thousands of different items. If you're familiar with Minecraft, this is a 2D version of it, in a way.

If that was not enough to convince you, read our Terraria review to find out more details about it.

Expert Picks: 6 Best Browsers For Your iPad | 2024 Edition

Which is the best browser for your iPad? Here are the 5 best browsers beyond Safari that you should check out today.

best safari games on ipad

best safari games on ipad

Why would you ever want to use a browser other than Safari?

Well, for one, different browsers have different features that may better suit your specific needs and preferences.

For instance, some browsers offer superior ad-blocking capabilities, enhancing your browsing experience by reducing unwanted distractions. Others excel in speed and performance, particularly for heavy web usage or multitasking. Privacy-focused browsers provide additional layers of security, ensuring your online activities remain confidential.

ipad browsers

Different Browsers, Different Accounts & Customizations

Furthermore, certain browsers offer unique user interfaces and customization options, allowing you to tailor your browsing experience to your liking. A key point here involves the account that the browser is tied to. For example, if you mostly surf using Chrome on your computer, using Chrome on your iPad would mean you have access to your bookmarks and passwords. Other browsers like Firefox and Safari also have similar features.

I Usually Have Two Or More Browsers… Why?

I keep about two to three browsers on my iPad and other devices, simply because I have duplicate accounts on several websites. For example, I use a SEO tool and I want to keep my personal account logged into Safari. I have another account that I keep logged in with Chrome. That way, I can avoid signing out of my personal account to access my alternate account.

Why Do People Say Other Browsers Are Just Skins on Safari?

It’s a bit of an exaggeration because a “skin” implies that other browsers just have a different look as compared to Safari.

That isn’t completely true.

The main reason why people make this comment comes down to a rendering engine called WebKit. WebKit is the underlying framework that Safari uses to display web pages. Apple’s policies for iOS and iPadOS require all browsers on these platforms to use WebKit as their rendering engine. This means that, at a fundamental level, all browsers on the iPad render web pages in the same way Safari does.

Let’s say you ran Chrome and Safari on your desktop. You might notice the same website looks different. That’s because Chrome uses the Blink rendering engine while Safari uses WebKit, but on the iPad, it’s all WebKit.

However, this doesn’t mean that other browsers are mere “skins” of Safari. They can still offer distinct features and functionalities that differentiate them from Safari. For example, they might provide different user interfaces, more extensive tab management, unique privacy tools, or integration with other services and platforms. These browsers also often have their own security measures and data sync systems, offering varied experiences in terms of privacy and cross-device compatibility.

Let’s see the special features of each browser.

Safari is the pre-installed browser on the iPad, so the immediate benefit is that you don’t have to install anything.

Online, you’d find comments that Safari is the most optimized browser for the iPad as compared to the others, but in practice, it’s difficult to notice the difference on a day-to-day basis.

What you’ll notice is the level of integration. If you are deeply tied into the Apple ecosystem, then you will gain additional benefits such as being able to access your passwords and other credentials stored in your iCloud. In addition, you can access your bookmarks, reading list and iCloud Tabs if you use Safari on other devices.

google chrome on ipad

Some interesting features that I like include the ability to annotate web pages using the Markup tool. The Markup tool can be accessed by pressing the Share button and scrolling down. Markup takes a full-page screenshot and then a llows you to mark the page with your finger or your pen . This is useful for me because I sometimes have to write instructions on how to do certain things on a web page. It can also be useful for people who need to point out where corrections need to be made.

best safari games on ipad

According to Statista, in May 2023, Chrome took 63% of the global market share for browsers, which means this is the main browser used by many people.

Using Chrome on iPad comes down to whether you use Chrome regularly on your other devices. If you do, then you will enjoy the integrated experience, where your passwords, history, and search terms are saved.

What I also liked is the “Send to Your Devices” option which allows you to easily share a webpage you are viewing on one device with your other devices where you are also logged into Chrome with the same Google account. Compared to Handoff, this allows you to send Chrome tabs to non-Apple devices.

opera browser on ipad

Opera is an interesting browser and its main offering is the integrated ad blocker and VPN.

Opera comes with a built-in ad blocker which can enhance browsing speed and user experience. By default, it comes activated, so you might notice that your pages are much cleaner than before.

Additionally, its free, integrated VPN service might provide an extra layer of security and privacy, especially useful when browsing on public Wi-Fi networks. However, we would like to point out that Opera VPN gets mediocre scores from a lot of VPN review sites, so if you’re looking for a proper VPN, it’s worth checking out the competition.

brave on ipad

Brave was the first option for browsers when I searched for “browsers” in the App Store. Not because they are extremely popular, but because they bought ads.

I’ve heard of Brave because people talk about how it’s a privacy-focused browser. I also found that Brave has a lot of useful tools to make your browsing experience smoother. For example,

  • Blocks cookie consent notification by default
  • Brave Playlist

brave browser offline video playlist

Brave Playlist is an interesting one. I added a YouTube video to Brave’s Playlist and then turned off WiFi, and it was still able to play the video even though I didn’t have any data.

Note that Brave’s integrated VPN is not free. The VPN service is provided by Guardian and costs $129.99 when paid annually or $12.99 when paid monthly.

Microsoft Edge

microsoft edge on ipad

Microsoft Edge is the pre-installed browser on Windows systems and so it deserves a look.

After testing the browsers above, I expected to be underwhelmed, but boy was I wrong.

One major reason to use Edge involves your Microsoft account. If you regularly use your Microsoft account to store passwords and other credentials, then Edge will have an edge over other browsers.

Furthermore, Edge is a pretty feature-rich browser — something I didn’t expect. Not only does Microsoft Edge has an adblock integrated, but what I really liked about it is its Read Aloud feature plus its Reading Mode feature. Combining these two will allow you to get articles read to you effectively.

microsoft edge reading mode on ipad

For example, when I was reading the Washington Post, I would first press “Reading Mode” to get rid of headers, sidebars and other distractions, leaving only the article on the screen. Then, you can press “Read Aloud” to get the article read to you.

You can change the accents of the virtual readers. It’s amusing because you can get a French person to read an English article and hear the French accent come through. Edge’s Read Aloud has many accents, including English from various parts of the Anglosphere (not just the typical UK, US, Canada, NZ, and Australia).

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox is a browser that is great if you use Firefox on your computers because you can have a seamless experience when logged into your Mozilla account.

Syncing accounts between my computer and iPad was easy because all I had to do was scan a QR code on my iPad.

Firefox has a Reading Mode which removes headers, footers and other distractions, leaving only the article on your screen. You can also place articles you want to read later into your Reading List, which is synced to your Mozilla account.

I liked the Synchronized Tabs feature. Once signed in, tabs that I open on my computer are synced to my iPad . This is convenient if you want a seamless experience between devices.

Firefox was created by Mozilla and in the app’s description on the Apple Store, they emphasize, “Don’t settle for a browser produced by giant, profit-driven, data-hoarding tech companies. Firefox is the obvious choice for independent, ethical tech that respects your privacy…”

Indeed, most mainstream browsers are built by large corporations. Apple makes Safari. Google makes Chrome. Microsoft has the Edge.

But this begs the question — if you care about privacy, why not try the more privacy-focused Firefox Focus?

Firefox Focus

firefox focus on ipad

Firefox Focus is like an app that’s permanently in incognito/private browsing mode.

It’s the most barebones browser, though. Everything on this browser is geared towards shorter-term use. For example, once you close the app , all your browsing history gets deleted. Meaning no saved logins.

You get a trash bin icon on your toolbar. Pressing that clears your browser history.

You don’t get bookmarks or account syncing.

You get an adblocker, though.

I’m not sure who this is for. Firefox Focus remains a specialized browser meant for people who want a specific app for browsing stuff and automatically deleting everything afterwards.

Of course, solely relying on a browser to create anonymity is not enough, you need to take further steps to conceal your identity if you really want to remain truly private.

Comparison and Recommendations

If you had to choose a browser, here are some considerations you should make.

Where Are Your Logins Stored?

After testing these browsers, I have come to realize that one main reason why you’d use one browser over another comes down to where you store most of your information such as logins.

I use Google Chrome on my computer, so naturally most of my logins and preferences are stored on my Google account. Therefore, Google Chrome is the most convenient for this aspect.

However, if your information is stored elsewhere, then you can use the corresponding browser. Here’s a table,

Special Features To Consider

There’s nothing stopping you from using multiple browsers on a device, so you can install multiple and enjoy all the benefits.

For example, if you need an adblocker, you can use Edge, Brave, Firefox Focus or Opera. All of these have adblockers pre-installed. But if you want to go further and get rid of cookie consent screens, Brave can do that.

Brave is great for people who like YouTube because you can add videos to your playlist and get them downloaded for offline watching. This is a pretty handy feature that I haven’t seen elsewhere.

Edge has an impressive Read Aloud feature that can be good if you like listening to your web pages. Combined with the Reading Mode filter, Edge can read pages aloud efficiently.

Opera’s and Brave’s VPN feature is debatable. If you’re going to pay for a VPN, then you have many more options than using Brave’s integrated VPN, especially considering VPNs vary in speed, privacy and features. Opera’s free VPN has its flaws, and you should consider whether you can deal with them.

Safari is a special case because it comes pre-installed with your iPad. I really liked the Markup feature which takes a full-page screenshot and allows you to annotate the screenshot. This can help you point out specific areas on a web page to another person.

“Plain” Browsers

Chrome and Firefox are as plain as it gets when it comes to browsers. I think the main reason why you’d use Chrome is because you have a Google account and most of your information is stored there. It’s convenient.

The same reason can be applied to Firefox, except instead of having an account with one of the biggest tech companies out there, your information is stored with Mozilla. Oh, and Firefox has a nice Synchronized Tab feature. Firefox Focus isn’t far off, but it’s a special browser that’s permanently in private browsing mode where all your browsing data gets deleted right after you’ve exited.

Doing this review has taught me that some browsers have specific uses. You could very well just have that one browser for that one purpose. For example, I might keep a copy of Chrome, Edge and Brave.

Chrome would be my main browser because I store personal data with Google and use Chrome on my main computer.

I’ll have Brave because of its offline media playlist feature.

And finally, I’ll have Edge, for the rare occasions when I need a passage read out loud.

They’re all free, so there’s nothing to lose except storage space.

Yes, cloud gaming is available on iOS. Numerous cloud gaming services are available for iPhone and iPad users. These services let you stream and play all games from the cloud, directly on your iOS device.

Most cloud gaming providers don’t offer dedicated apps, but you can access their services through Safari on your iPhone or iPad. We’ll explain how to do this later in this article. A quick tip for you: Almost every controller with Bluetooth connectivity can be used, such as PlayStation or Xbox controllers.

What are the best cloud gaming services for iOS?

Cloud gaming is revolutionizing the way we play games, and the selection of platforms is constantly growing. Major console brands are being challenged by web giants, giving players an array of options to choose from.

Let’s take a look at some of the best cloud gaming services for iOS users:

How to set up cloud gaming on iOS?

There are two ways to play cloud gaming on your iOS device via the Safari browser or through a dedicated app (currently only available for Shadow PC):

Setting up via Browser (Safari):

Get started with cloud gaming on your iOS device using Safari in just a few simple steps:

  • Visit the cloud gaming service’s website using Safari and sign in.
  • Play directly through the provider’s website without installing an app.
  • Open Safari and navigate to the Cloud Gaming Service Website.
  • Tap the “Share” button at the bottom of the screen and select “Add to Home Screen.”
  • You’ll find the provider on your home screen, making it easier to access and feel more like an app.
  • Start streaming and enjoy cloud gaming on your iPhone or iPad!

Setting up via iOS App:

Follow these instructions to set up cloud gaming via an app:

  • Download the cloud gaming service app from the Apple App Store (currently only available for Shadow).
  • Start playing the extensive library of top games directly from your iPhone or iPad.

Quick tip: While some games are playable using the touchscreen, others necessitate the use of a compatible controller, like an Xbox or PlayStation controller.

Is there any cloud gaming for free on iOS?

Yes, GeForce Now offers free cloud gaming that works through Safari on your iPhone. You can play for one hour at a time before rejoining, but it’s a great way to test the service and take breaks between gaming sessions. Keep in mind that the free tier has lower graphics and hardware quality compared to the paid version. You can find a list of compatible games on our GeForce Now Games List .

While you don’t need a credit card to access the free tier, you’ll still need to purchase or own the games you want to play (e.g., through Steam). You can connect your existing Steam account to GeForce Now, allowing you to play the games you already own without repurchasing them. There are also some free to play games available, which you can find on our Free GeForce Now Games List .

9 offline iPad and iPhone games to play without Wi-Fi

  • If you're going on a trip and want to queue up some offline entertainment, you can't go wrong with iPad and iPhone games.
  • Not all games can work offline, however. So I hand-picked some recommendations that can all be played without Wi-Fi or internet.
  • You need to download them with an internet connection, of course.

The greatest strength of mobile games is their portability. Games downloaded to your iPhone and iPad are designed to be taken and played anywhere and everywhere. However, you might discover that your favorite game doesn't work unless you are connected to the internet. Given that you might rely on these games the most when Wi-Fi isn't readily available, discovering this at the worst possible time can be a major bummer.

Some games simply cannot be played offline, most notably online-only games, but there are many that offer amazing experiences without a connection. Mobile games come in as many shapes and sizes as console titles and even share a good number of games with consoles. That's why I made sure to include a good variety of genres and styles, so you can find at least one that appeals to your tastes. These are the best iPhone and iPad games you can play without an internet connection.

Make sure you download these games before you are out of internet range. Accessing the app store and downloading them will still require an internet connection before you can play them offline.

Have an iPhone 15? Here are 15 must-try features

Monument valley, m.c. escher eat your heart out.

Puzzle games are a dime a dozen on the app store, so it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Monument Valley and its sequel do so first with their simple but pleasing art style but really hook you with their mind-bending mazes. All the areas are made up of impossible spaces and optical illusions that make finding your way through them tricky but satisfying to work out.

The premise of the game is that you, Ro, are placed on a seemingly impossible stage. By manipulating the perspective to create new pathways, you need to navigate through them to the end. Between the pleasant colors and chill tunes, this is a great way to relax while out of internet range.

9 iPad games to play first on your new Apple tablet

Star wars: knights of the old republic, use the force, not the internet.

What was once a cutting-edge game on the original Xbox and PC now fits in the palm of your hand. Set thousands of years before the events of the films, there's no need to know all the ins and outs of the Star Wars universe to enjoy this amazing RPG made by the masters at Bioware.

You create your own new character in the Star Wars universe, whom you will guide on a classic tale of good versus evil. However, this RPG lets you decide which side you fight for: the Jedi or the Sith. Will you be an honorable warrior of the Light side, or a selfish and powerful Dark side user? The choice is yours.

5 ways a Fire tablet is better for your kids than an iPad

Plague inc., morbid curiosity.

Made well before a real plague terrorized the entire planet, Plague Inc. has become a strangely intriguing game in the years following. It's all about creating and adapting a disease of your own design to try and infect the entire globe before scientists can contain and cure it. It isn't meant to be a true simulation of how diseases work, but it does highlight some interesting things about how quickly sickness can spread.

You have a few different disease types to choose from and modify over time, but actually winning is quite challenging. If you have the stomach for a game that may hit a little too close to home, Plague Inc. can give you a new perspective on how global health issues evolve.

iPad frozen? Here's how to restart your tablet

Offline poker - texas holdem.

You can play many games with a simple deck of cards, but remembering to pack a full deck, having the space, and other people to play with isn't always an option. When you are a poker fan, you also have to consider whether people know the rules and are of somewhat equal skill. Or, you can just play Texas Holdem Offline Poker.

This is a no-frills poker app that does exactly what it says on the tin. It sets you up at a table, gives you a stack of chips, and starts dealing. You can even play tournaments with the AI if you think you're ready to go pro.

Turn off your iPad or iPad Pro: Here's the button combo you need to know

Tetris meets sudoku.

Why pick one amazing puzzle game when you can play both at once? I admit this combination doesn't sound as obvious as chocolate and peanut butter, but trust me when I say it works. Best of all, it's as addicting and replayable as both games it is inspired by.

The idea is that you have a Tetris-like grid with blocks you need to drop, only instead of making a row to delete them, you need to line up numbers that are in those blocks. It sounds more complicated than it is when you play it, but you'll be hooked from your first game.

8 reasons to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab instead of an iPad

Old man's journey, a leisurely adventure.

Fans of classic point-and-click adventure games will adore Old Man's Journey. You need to help the titular old man navigate various landscapes using simple touch controls to manipulate the environment, somewhat similar to how Monument Valley works.

Most of the game involves moving hills and animals to let the man get from one side of the screen to the other, but it also slows down for moments where you search for something in the background to trigger a memory. This will fill in some of the old man's life, helping you understand who he is and what his journey is all about, all without a single line of text or spoken dialogue.

Best iPad wallpapers: 50 background ideas for your Apple tablet

Go with the flow.

I couldn't help myself but add just one more puzzle game to the list. There are so many good ones that I don't think you could blame me, and Flow Free is quite different from the rest. As with the best ones, the idea is simple: you just need to connect all the same colored points together with unbroken paths. The tricky part, of course, is doing it with every color at once.

You can get the feel for the puzzles with the early levels, but then move on to the harder stages that are much bigger and have way more colors to connect in mind-breakingly hard patterns. These might stump you for a while but will give you a massive rush of accomplishment when you finally crack the code.

Best iPad: Expert reviewed and ranked

Brothers in arms 3, answer the call of duty.

You can't get your Call of Duty fix while offline, but you can still get your adrenaline rush with Brothers in Arms 3. This is the third entry in a long-running shooter franchise, but you don't need to have played any of the previous games. You're dropped into WWII to participate in some of the most iconic battles of the war.

This is a third-person shooter as opposed to a first-person shooter but has as much spectacle and tight gunplay as any other game. The campaign is a decent length, with a good amount of variety between each stage to keep the game feeling fresh. You'll grow attached to the various "brothers" you meet and fight with in this epic adventure.

Best iPad Pro keyboards: Turn your Apple tablet into a laptop alternative

Gta san andreas.

Who hasn't heard of the GTA franchise at this point? If you're newer to the series, you might have missed out on San Andreas, which is a shame because it still holds up as one of the franchise's best. While it might not be as robust and detailed as the newest game, it still has some unique features and a story worth seeing through.

Set in the titular city of San Andreas, you follow CJ in his struggles with various street gangs, cops, and basically everything else in his life trying to pull him into the world of crime. You're free to follow the story or go off and create your own fun in the open world that acts as your personal playground for mayhem and destruction.

This game requires you to have an iPhone 4s or newer to run.

Isle of Arrows

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

($5.99/£4.99/AU$9.99)

Isle of Arrows is a gorgeous mash-up of card-based board game, pathfinding puzzler, and tower defense. In each level, you plot to extend the path your enemies take toward their goal, adding towers to attack them along the way. Various objects grant you extra cash to spend, allowing you during any given turn to make the path more labyrinthine – or deadly.

The basic concept is smart and the visuals are gorgeous. But it’s the execution and fine details that ensure Isle of Arrows is a winner. You soon realize battles take place on multiple fronts, demanding you instantly switch up strategies when new ones appear.

New cards are regularly unlocked, letting you expand and evolve your tactics. And the game’s bite-sized levels yet quite lengthy campaigns provide a perfect mix of pick-up-and-play immediacy and long-term challenge.

A screenshot showing Alien: Isolation on iPad

Alien: Isolation

($14.99/£12.99/AU$22.99)

Alien: Isolation is a survival horror game that sits between the first two Alien movies. Your job is to investigate the disappearance of the original film’s lead, Ellen Ripley. Added emotional heft comes from you playing as her daughter.

The game itself initially involves getting to grips with the interface and finding your way around. Later, you’ll be trying to stay one step ahead of a terrifying xenomorph that’s dead set on having you for lunch. Unfortunately, you’re not armed to the teeth like the marines in Aliens – you must use stealth and cunning to survive.

For people keen on the Alien franchise or the original PC/console version of this title, there’s plenty to like here. The game looks great, has well-conceived touchscreen controls, and bundles the original’s add-ons, including one that provides an alternative take on Ellen’s battle to escape the Nostromo in the original film. Finally, thanks to iPadOS 15, you can use a keyboard and mouse to control the game as you would on a PC, as long as you have an iPad-comaptible peripheral available.

A screenshot showing Townscaper on iPad

($4.99/£4.49/AU$7.99)

Townscaper is a game of city building without the usual trappings found in the sub-genre. There’s no budget to manage and no enemies to battle. It’s just you, a seemingly endless sea, and the joy of tapping the screen to fashion your metropolis.

You have little direct control over what is built, bar the color of each piece – although you soon discover specific block placement results in different types of structure. Additionally, the underlying grid changes the nature of what you construct.

This is a thoughtful, meditative piece of entertainment right at the edge of gaming. If you prize tension and high scores, it might pall. But for our money, Townscaper is a pitch-perfect slice of game-lite creativity, especially on the larger screen of an iPad.

Crying Suns

Crying Suns

($8.99/£8.99/AU$13.99)

Crying Suns begins with the protagonist being freed from his confines by a squid-like robot. He promptly throws up on the floor, and then for good measure is told his beloved empire has likely fallen. Oh, and he also died and is a clone.

Fortunately, he’s made of steely stuff and sets about figuring out what’s gone wrong. This involves you directing a crew, sending commandos to their inevitable doom, and blowing up quite a lot of enemy spaceships.

Gameplay elements have a smattering of randomness, but Crying Suns eschews conventions by following a quite rigid chapter structure. This enables it to offer a deeper narrative than many of its contemporaries, but there’s plenty of replay value in the real-time strategy shooty bits.

XCOM 2 Collection

 XCOM 2 Collection

($24.99/£23.99/AU$38.99)

XCOM 2 Collection on its 2016 release for PCs and powerful consoles won all kinds of plaudits for its deep, immersive turn-based combat. Like the original XCOM, it found you guiding a squad of soldiers trying to overthrow alien occupation of the Earth. Procedurally generated levels provided almost limitless replay value. In short, it was good.

Four years later, XCOM 2’s arrival on iPad might feel a touch tardy, but it’s a faithful port, with smart touchscreen controls, short load times, and all of the content from the PC take - despite a lower price tag.

Note that you will need a fairly modern iPad to get the best from the game - and it’s demanding on battery life; but if it’s been your belief that iPad gaming can’t cut it with ‘proper’ consoles and PCs, XCOM 2 suggests otherwise.

best safari games on ipad

($2.99/£2.99/AU$4.49)

Neonimo is a real-time strategy game between two players - humans, or you and your iPad - that finds you attempting to build a path to your opponent’s base by using Tetris pieces.

That might sound easy, but of course things aren’t quite that simple. There are all kinds of strategic decisions regarding how to use your gradually replenishing resources, where to place special pieces, and whether or not your opponent will whack you with the iPad for annihilating their amazing route when they were seconds from victory.

This is intense, fast-paced stuff – games are over in a matter of minutes – but whether you’re partaking in a standard one-on-one, or trying your luck against the AI in dungeon mode, where you get new gear after each win, this one’s a superb and unique spin on the RTS genre.

Book of Demons: Tablet Edition

Book of Demons: Tablet Edition

($9.99/£9.99/AU$14.99)

Book of Demons: Tablet Edition uses hack-and-slash dungeon crawlers like Diablo as a foundation, but radically reworks them for the touchscreen.

Rather than roaming about in freeform fashion, your wanderings in this iPad game are limited to set pathways. As foes attack, your fighter automatically responds, but you can use a finger to adjust their focus – and unleash magical fury by way of powers from collectable cards. It plays like an action-oriented RTS – and it’s great.

Over time, you upgrade your kit, figure out spell combos that obliterate entire hordes of enemies, and thereby give yourself a fighting chance of reaching the dungeon’s depths. And with the game’s many neat touches – papercraft characters; a mode that effectively pauses the game when you aren’t touching the display; game length predictions and customization – you’ll surely want to.

Maze Machina

Maze Machina

($1.99/£1.99/AU$2.99)

Maze Machina takes a mouse, plonks him in an ever-changing maze, and has him fight it out with mechanical foes designed by the evil Automatron. His only hope: to survive 15 rounds by grabbing keys and making it to the exit.

It’s brain-pounding stuff. The arena is a four-by-four grid, and each time you swipe, all objects and characters head in that direction. Swiping also triggers object use – and the objects themselves are dictated by the icon on which each character stands.

However, the iPad’s large display gives the game room to breathe – and you a fighting chance of strategizing in a manner that will finally bring an end to the clockwork horror, rather than the heroic and smart but also easily breakable rodent.

Bad North

($4.99/£4.99/AU$7.99)

Bad North is a real-time strategy game for iPad that pulls off the trick of being accessible to genre newcomers, but is tricky enough to give old-hands a challenge. It centers around defending an idyllic island kingdom from Viking invaders. As they appear from the gloom in their boats, set on a bout of stabbing and arson, you must position defenders accordingly.

The controls are straightforward, involving taps to select and move any given group of soldiers. Fighting is automatic, based on nearby enemies. No two games are the same – islands are procedurally generated. And as you win battles, you kit out soldiers with upgrades, which heavily impacts on subsequent victories.

Each game of Bad North also has a sense of permanence, because if your commanders die, they are gone forever. Strategy is often about the choices you make between battles in this elegant, tactile title.

P1 Select

($2.99/£2.99/AU$4.99)

P1 Select is a turn-based dungeon crawler. You move within a randomized maze, duffing up monsters, grabbing bling, and making for an exit. And in a twist you probably weren’t expecting, your powers change after every move you make.

The P1 Select screen is split in two. On the left, there’s the maze. On the right, there’s a player select grid. Each ‘player’ – Midas, X-Ray, Vish; and so on – has unique powers, and its own lives count. When you swipe in the maze, the player selection moves accordingly.

Initially, this is deeply weird – even off-putting. But stick with P1 Select and its unique way of working lodges in your brain. The game’s finite nature (nine rooms) makes it great for quick-fire strategy sessions, and also honing your skills, given that the high score is an average of recent runs.

Tropico

($11.99/£11.99/AU$17.99)

Tropico is a dictator simulator masquerading as a strategy game. Well-known to PC players, Tropico finds you in control of a Caribbean island – and aiming to stay in power at all costs.

The free-form nature of the game affords you various routes to dealing with your people. Resources must be carefully balanced, so you can build the structures that will make hard cash, and keep people entertained and healthy. And if everything kicks off, you must quickly figure out the best way to deal with uprisings.

On iPad, this could all have been a complex mess, but the interface has been cleverly redesigned for touch, providing fast access to key commands through your ‘Dictator’s Desk’. It’s a great addition to a classic title – one that fully showcases the power that’s in the hands of any gamer armed with an iPad.

Kingdom Rush: Vengeance

Kingdom Rush: Vengeance

Kingdom Rush: Vengeance is the latest iteration of the best tower-defense game on mobile. This time, you get to play bad guy Vez’nan – a wizard tired of getting repeatedly beaten, and determined to conquer the kingdom.

How conquest and tower defense align is hard to say, but it makes for a great game. As ever, you drop towers in pre-defined spots, unleash special powers, and send a mighty hero into the fray for ad hoc smashing.

Like other entries in the Kingdom Rush series, Vengeance looks great, is finely balanced, and keeps things interesting with new surprises. There is one bad surprise, though, in IAP stinking up the place a bit. However, have patience, learn from your mistakes, and avoid temptation, and you’ll find there’s no need to pay more – right through to Vez’nan’s final victory.

Euclidean Skies

Euclidean Skies

Euclidean Skies is the follow-up to the superb Euclidean Lands , a turn-based strategy game that takes place on floating constructions akin to Rubik’s Cubes. In that title, manipulating the landscape is as important as the physical moves the protagonist makes – and that’s even more overt in this sequel.

In Euclidean Skies, each individual ‘block’ within the landscape has the potential to be spun about any axis. This provides scope for brain-bendingly complex solutions, whether battling a gigantic monster by obliterating its spine with rotating chunks of land, or gradually unraveling what was once a flat surface, creating ‘arms’ to prod switches and fashion bridges to doors.

This isn’t an easy game, but it is hugely satisfying when you crack one of its puzzles. And, like the original, it also feels unique, which alone makes it worthy of consideration.

FTL: Faster Than Light

FTL: Faster Than Light

FTL: Faster Than Light is a real-time strategy game that finds you hurtling through space, trying to get essential data to the safety of the federation. Unfortunately, you’re being pursued by shooty rebels, and so must keep jumping to new sectors.

Every time you do, surprises await – you might make some cash, or end up in a frantic scrap with pirates. During action scenes, you direct your crew to make repairs, and fling explosives and lasers in your enemy’s general direction. At any point, you can pause to take a breather and strategize a bit.

The game is procedurally generated, and so every mission is different. But there are some constants: pitch-perfect controls, a sense of immersion, and palpable tension when half your ship’s on fire but you know one carefully aimed shot will obliterate your foe.

Infinite West

Infinite West

(free + $1.99/£1.99/AU$2.99 IAP)

Infinite West casts you as a cowboy in the wilderness, taking down a gang that murdered his family. That hackneyed scenario might put you in mind of a shoot ’em up, and so it’s a surprise to find Infinite West is more like chess – only with pieces shooting each other.

The turn-based play across semi-randomized levels forces you to consider every action. Your gunslinger can only move one space horizontally or vertically at a time, and each foe has unique weaponry ranges. Further complexity comes from a health counter, a ‘dash’ power and an ongoing upgrades system.

There are echoes of Square Enix’s GO games, but if anything Infinite West has more depth and brains. You’ll certainly need your wits about you when, many levels into a mission, you suddenly find yourself faced with a dozen gang members intent on your untimely demise.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI

(free + $59.99/£54.99/AU$89.99 IAP)

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI properly showcases the iPad’s potential as a gaming device. Previous takes on Civilization for iPad have been weirdly cartoonish and simplified. Not Civilization VI – this is the game you get on PC, with all its inherent depth and complexity.

This means you get one of the finest 4X (eXplore; eXpand; eXploit; eXterminate) games around. You aim to make your civilization dominant by becoming a trading giant, heading to the stars, or getting all stabby/shooty until no-one else is left standing.

The game demands time and attention, is hugely rewarding, and should keep you going for months. Just as well, given its price tag. Still, you get 60 moves for free, and ‘proper’ games cost real money.

Bar some slightly blurry visuals on iPad Pro, this is the real deal – one of the best games in existence, carefully optimized for the touchscreen.

best safari games on ipad

I went on my first safari trip to South Africa. I won't make these 10 mistakes next time.

  • I spent a week on safari in South Africa , visiting three different reserves.
  • I found that planning was essential and that I always needed to have my camera ready.
  • Next time I'd bring warmer clothing and a buff for dust control.

Insider Today

I spent a week on safari in South Africa, visiting three different reserves.

It was a thrilling adventure I'll never forget, and I got to see incredible creatures such as hyenas, elephants, and lions.

It's no wonder more travelers are looking to weave game reserves into their trips. According to the most recent data collected by the travel agency Go2Africa , interest in beach and safari combo trips was up 20% from 2022 to 2023 alone.

But although the trip was great, it wasn't always easy — and I had a few missteps from the planning phase to the wildlife observation.

Here are mistakes I made on my trip that that everyone should avoid on their first safari .

We booked our trip during a busy part of the year.

best safari games on ipad

I try to avoid traveling during holidays , which often means more crowds. Unfortunately, we ended up booking during Easter break, which was the end of summer in the southern hemisphere.

The lodges were full and busy with lots of kids, and the prices were higher. We still had a great time, but if we'd booked different dates — maybe during a low season — we may have paid less for a more private experience.

The mornings were cold, even in summer.

best safari games on ipad

Our morning game drives started before sunrise in an open-air jeep.

The safari guide was wearing shorts, so I thought I would be comfortable matching that. Wrong! I was so cold on our first ride.

I quickly learned that although it was summer, a beanie and down jacket would've been cozy on the drive.

I missed photo opportunities because my camera wasn't ready.

best safari games on ipad

I knew I wanted to keep my camera out at all times when on a game drive. But after several hours of driving, we were approaching the gate and I tucked my phone away.

That's when we turned a corner and saw a large white rhino facing us in the middle of the road. It was a dramatic moment I captured in my head, but I didn't have time to snap a photo before it darted into the bushes.

Next time, I'd be better prepared for animals that might pop up near the exit.

I had no idea how dusty the roads were going to be.

best safari games on ipad

The safari terrain changed based on where the guide drove each day, and some routes were quite dusty.

After a day of exploring, I felt as if I had dust in my ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. Sunglasses helped shield my eyes, but I wish I'd brought a buff to cover the rest of my face.

Driving between game reserves made me more tired than I'd expected.

best safari games on ipad

Our safari adventure included visits to three different wildlife reserves, and we rented a car to get between them.

On each transition day, we had a morning game drive, then a drive to get to the next reserve, and then an evening game drive there.

That was a lot of sitting, and by the time I got to the evening game drive, I was tired. Next time, I may space my schedule out more.

I made the classic mistake of leaving the car door open when unloading the luggage.

best safari games on ipad

At one point, I walked my bags inside my accommodations, leaving the door open behind me. When I came out, the neighbors were taking photos of a monkey inside my car.

He was quick because, fortunately, I didn't have any food in the car for him to run off with.

Now I know to stay on top of shutting and locking my car doors when at a game reserve.

We got too close to elephants.

best safari games on ipad

Animals can be unpredictable and safaris are not like a zoo. I learned how quickly a situation can change while watching a herd of elephants eating in Kruger National Park.

They started crossing the road in front of my car, and a large one turned to look right at us and started shaking his head. It seemed clearly displeased with our presence.

I flipped the car into reverse faster than you can say "elephant," but it was a scary moment.

Consuming too much liquid can be risky.

best safari games on ipad

Evening safari drives include a stop in the bush around sunset for a "sundowner" beverage. One of the nights, my drink proved to be too much liquid for my bladder.

The problem was that we were following a pride of lions, so there was no chance of hopping off the truck to relieve myself.

I was able to hold it, but next time I'll be more careful with the amount of liquid I consume before and during bush drives.

I was caught off guard by load shedding.

best safari games on ipad

Load shedding is the name for scheduled power outages in South Africa that help prevent the power grid from being overloaded.

Some places have backup generators or solar panels to alleviate power disruptions, but I learned not to expect that to always be the case.

When the power turned off during our trip, I found myself sitting in complete darkness. I scrambled for my phone flashlight, but I could've avoided that panic by plugging in the emergency light that was provided.

San Francisco 49ers v Tennessee Titans

Week 2 of the 2024 NFL preseason is here . The game of the weekend might be today's matchup between the New Orleans Saints and NFC champion San Francisco 49ers. Fortunately for football fans, it's the easiest game of them all to watch -- if you know where and when to look, of course.

Keep reading to find out how and when to watch tonight's New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers NFL preseason game.

How and when to watch the New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers NFL preseason game

The New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers NFL preseason game will be played on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. ET (5:00 p.m. PT). The game will air nationally on Fox, and stream on  Sling TV  and the platforms featured below.

The game is being broadcast at the same time as the  Green Bay Packers vs. Denver Broncos game . That game is airing on NFL Network.

How to watch today's New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers game without cable

While most cable packages include Fox, it's easy to watch today's game if you don't have an active  cable TV subscription . Your best options for watching are below. Streaming options will require an  internet provider .

Sling TV is the most cost-effective way to stream the New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers game

If you don't have cable TV that includes Fox (or NFL Network), one of the most cost-effective ways to watch tonight's games, and all the major sporting events happening this fall, is through a  subscription to Sling TV.  To watch Fox on Sling TV, you'll need a subscription to the Blue tier ($20 for your first month, $40 per month thereafter). We suggest leveling up your coverage to get more NFL games this fall with the Orange + Blue tier.

That Orange + Blue plan normally costs $60 per month, but the streamer currently offers a half-off promotion for your first month, so you'll pay just $30. It's your best NFL-watching option for the season, which includes NFL Network, ESPN and your ABC, NBC and Fox affiliates (where available).

The streamer is also currently offering big savings on four months of the Orange + Blue tier plus the Sports Extra plan when you prepay for the Sling TV Season Pass. The Sports Extra plan includes a large number of channels for pro and college football fans, including NFL RedZone, SEC Network, Big Ten Network and ESPNU. Prepay for four months of the Sling TV Season Pass and spend $219, reduced from $300.

Because Sling TV does not carry CBS, Sling subscribers will want to add Paramount+ to their bundle. (Note: Paramount+ and CBS Essentials are both subsidiaries of Paramount Global.)

Top features of Sling TV Orange + Blue plan:

  • Sling TV is our top choice for streaming major sporting events like  NASCAR .
  • There are 54 channels to watch in total, including your local NBC, Fox and ABC affiliates (where available).
  • You get access to most local NFL games and nationally broadcast games at the lowest price.
  • All subscription tiers include 50 hours of cloud-based DVR storage.
  • You can add Golf Channel, NBA TV, NHL Network, NFL RedZone, MLB Network, Tennis Channel and more sports-oriented channels (18 in total) via Sling TV's Sports Extras add-on.

Watch the New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers game free with FuboTV

You can watch every NFL game airing on network TV, including tonight's game, on  FuboTV . FuboTV is a sports-centric streaming service that offers access to almost every NFL game of the season. Packages include CBS, Fox Sunday NFC games via "NFL on Fox", NBC ("Sunday Night Football"), ESPN ("Monday Night Football"), NFL Network and more, so you'll be able to watch more than just today's games, all without a cable subscription.

To watch the NFL without cable, start a seven-day free trial of Fubo. You can begin watching immediately on your TV, phone, tablet or computer. In addition to NFL football, FuboTV offers MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS and international soccer games .

Top features of FuboTV Pro Tier:

  • There are no contracts with FuboTV -- you can cancel at any time.
  • The Pro tier includes over 180 channels, including NFL Network. (You'll need to upgrade to Ultimate for NFL RedZone.)
  • FuboTV includes all the channels you'll need to watch college and pro football, including CBS (not available through Sling TV).
  • All tiers come with 1,000 hours of cloud-based DVR recording.
  • Stream on your TV, phone, tablet and other devices.

Watch the New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers game on Hulu + Live TV

You can watch NFL football, including Fox and the NFL Network, with  Hulu + Live TV . The bundle features access to 90 channels, including both Fox and FS1. Unlimited DVR storage is also included. Watch every game on every network with Hulu + Live TV, plus catch live NFL preseason games, exclusive live regular season games, popular studio shows (including "NFL Total Access" and the Emmy-nominated show "Good Morning Football") and lots more.

Hulu + Live TV comes bundled with ESPN+ and Disney+ for $77 per month after a three-day free trial.

Watch the New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers game live with NFL+

If you want to watch all the NFL games happening during the preseason, including those that aren't airing on national TV or in your area, we recommend you  get a subscription to NFL+ . The premium streaming service, starting at $40 per year (or $7 per month), offers access to all NFL games happening this preseason -- even out-of-market games -- on all supported devices. The streaming service also offers access to NFL Network on all supported devices.

To boost your NFL experience even further, you can upgrade to NFL+ Premium with NFL RedZone and watch up to eight NFL games simultaneously. NFL+ Premium is $15 per month.

Top features of NFL+:

  • You get access to all NFL preseason games, including those that are out of market, on any supported device, including TV.
  • NFL+ lets you watch stream local and primetime regular season games on your phone or tablet (but not your TV).
  • It includes the NFL Network (and NFL RedZone with NFL+ Premium), so it's a good option for those who are looking to stream football on the go.

Watch NFL football live with a digital HDTV antenna

newdigitalantenna.png

You can also watch today's game with an affordable indoor antenna, which pulls in local over-the-air HDTV channels such as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, PBS and Univision. Here's the kicker: There's no monthly charge.

For anyone living in a partially blocked-off area (those near mountains or first-floor apartments), a  digital TV antenna  may not pick up a good signal -- or any signal at all. And you may need to experiment with placement around your room or home to get the best signal. But for many homes, a digital TV antenna provides a seriously inexpensive way to watch sports without paying a cable company. Indoor TV antennas can also provide some much-needed TV backup if a storm knocks out your cable.

This ultra-thin, multi-directional Mohu Leaf Plus digital antenna with a 60-mile range can receive hundreds of HDTV channels and can filter out cellular and FM signals. It delivers a high-quality picture in 1080p HDTV and top-tier sound. The antenna comes with a 16-foot digital coax cable for connecting to your TV.
