Memorial Day may mark the unofficial beginning of summer in the U.S., but it’s the days ahead of it that kick off big airport crowds.

The holiday symbolizes the beginning of the summer vacation season for many Americans. But it’s hardly a vacation for airport employees, who typically get pummeled with the largest crowds of the year to date.

Some days around the long weekend are significantly busier than others, and if you can afford to be flexible when flying Memorial Day weekend, you’ll save money and avoid chaos.

The best and worst days to fly Memorial Day weekend

NerdWallet analyzed the past three years of Transportation Security Administration checkpoint data for the six days before and six days after Memorial Day, which shows how many passengers were screened at TSA checkpoints.

For every year analyzed, the Friday before Memorial Day was the most-crowded day to travel before the holiday, which is observed on the last Monday of May. As far as post-holiday, the Sunday after has attracted the largest crowds over the past two years.

Based on the average number of passengers that flew each day of the past three years, here are the most- to least-crowded days for the 13 days surrounding Memorial Day (including the holiday), ranked:

Friday before.

Sunday after Memorial Day (most crowded).

Thursday before.

Memorial Day (Monday).

Friday after.

Thursday after.

Wednesday before.

Tuesday after.

Sunday before.

Saturday after.

Wednesday after.

Saturday before.

Tuesday before (least crowded).

When broken out by pre- and post-Memorial Day travel, here are the three least-crowded days to travel ranked from least to most crowded. These are likely the best days to fly around Memorial Day weekend.

Pre-holiday:

Tuesday before.

Post-holiday:

Why flying the Friday of Memorial Day weekend isn’t ideal

While the Friday before Memorial Day is always a big travel day, it was even bigger before the pandemic. For example, in 2019, the Friday before Memorial Day was the third-busiest day at U.S. airports for the entire year, losing only to the Sunday after Thanksgiving and the Sunday of Fourth of July weekend.

In 2023, the Friday before Memorial Day ranked among the top 20 busiest airport days of the year. It was also the busiest day of 2023 up until that point in the year.

Given that, check-in and security lines will likely be longer this year.

The smarter, cheaper Memorial Day weekend itinerary

If you work a standard Monday-Friday workweek and have the holiday off, then leaving Friday after work and returning the Sunday after Memorial Day might make sense. This minimizes the number of vacation days you take, and you’d get eight full days of vacation.

But if you follow the classic Friday-Monday weekend travel itinerary, then you’ll pay — in terms of literal price and airport crowds. Deviate from that schedule to find lighter crowds and perhaps better Memorial Day flight deals, too. Try these travel days instead:

Travel on Saturday: Rather than rushing out from work Friday afternoon, take that evening to pack, spend Friday night in your own bed and take an early flight out Saturday. Morning flights are often more reliable than evening flights.

Fly home the Wednesday after: A lot of people opt for traveling on Memorial Day itself, and many people fly the day after. But relatively few people extend their trip one more day and fly Wednesday.

If you do, you’ll avoid the worst of the airport crowds. You increase your chances of saving money on airfare . Plus, you’ll be home in time for a delightful two-day workweek — which might be just enough time to wrap up lingering tasks without getting fresh projects dumped on your desk.

Fly home the Saturday after: You can still have a weeklong vacation and avoid Sunday’s crowds by flying home the Saturday after Memorial Day.

Then you’ll have a full day at home to knock out laundry and meal prep before the next workweek starts. After all, sometimes the most relaxing way to end a trip is taking a vacation from that vacation.

Consider travel insurance

If you are forking out the big dollars to travel this Memorial Day, consider booking your trip with a card that has travel insurance or purchasing a supplementary policy from a third-party insurance provider, like Allianz or World Nomads .

Travel insurance can help you get money back for canceled or interrupted trips. It can also fund expenses like additional clothing if your luggage gets lost or an extra hotel room if you need to stay overnight due to a flight delay.

Read the policy, though, as many plans come to your rescue only if you experience a covered reason.

Cape May, New Jersey

People bike and walk in front of traditional villas in Cape May, New Jersey, on a sunny summer day.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of tourist season in Cape May , and it's no surprise why. A quintessential summertime escape for many Americans, this historic seaside town boasts pleasant temperatures in the 70s come late spring. Cape May also played a significant role in military defense during World War II. Just keep in mind that traffic jams are common – especially during the busy season – so be sure to plan your drive accordingly.

Travelers will enjoy stretching out along Cape May's beaches, strolling through the Washington Street Mall and admiring well-preserved Victorian architecture adjacent to the shoreline. You can also visit Emlen Physick Estate – the town's only Victorian-era house museum – or see historic war planes at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum.

Where to stay: You won't find chain hotels in Cape May, but you can stay at a darling bed-and-breakfast, a boutique hotel like The Virginia Hotel & Cottages or a rental cottage.

New York City

Aerial of the Central Park in New York with golf fields and tall skyscrapers surrounding the park.

New York City is the perfect place for a last-minute, long-weekend trip – especially if you're car-free. Pack your walking shoes and plan to visit one world-class site after another on foot or by subway. Must-see attractions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, St. Patrick's Cathedral and – of course – Times Square. May is also one of New York's most pleasant times of year (if you don't mind a chance of rain). Expect daytime highs in the upper 60s, perfect for a stroll through Central Park or along the High Line.

Special Memorial Day events include the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade and Fleet Week, when civilians can tour naval ships and meet members of the U.S. Navy, the Marine Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard. New York City beaches also open to the public on this weekend. When it's time to dine, you'll find an endless list of establishments, from historic bagel shops to under-the-radar delis to Michelin-starred restaurants.

Where to stay: You can find all kinds of lodging options in New York – just be sure to book early, as rates can get expensive. One top option is The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel in Manhattan.

Annapolis, Maryland

Main Street in downtown Annapolis, Maryland, in the evening.

Travelers looking to pay tribute to military men and women this Memorial Day can do so in the waterfront city of Annapolis . Get outside to watch the Memorial Day Parade down Main Street, or stroll through the rest of Annapolis' historic downtown, where you're bound to see rows of American flags.

If you're looking for a bit more space to stretch out, head to Quiet Waters Park. Spanning 340 acres, the park is ideal for biking, kayaking, picnicking or simply admiring panoramic views of the South River in late May's pleasant temperatures (high 70s to 80s). Bicycle and boat rentals are available on-site and nearby. When hunger strikes, head to Boatyard Bar & Grill or Carrol's Creek Cafe for delicious seafood.

Where to stay: Accommodation options in Annapolis range from modern outposts like Graduate Annapolis to picturesque bed-and-breakfasts to vacation rentals downtown or near the water.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Winter sunrise in Dewey Beach, Delaware.

Ring in the start of summer on the shores of Rehoboth Beach . Calm waters and temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s make this Delaware beach town a great kid-friendly option, and travelers of all ages will enjoy walking down the mile-long boardwalk filled with restaurants and shops.

When you're not sunbathing on the sand or relaxing on the balcony of your vacation rental or hotel room, head to Cape Henlopen State Park to fish, hike and bird-watch. The Funland amusement park is another staple in the area that opens for the season in May, and some shopping at Tanger Outlets is a must when you need a break from outdoor activities.

Where to stay: The Avenue Inn and Spa , located a block from the beach and boardwalk, is a top lodging option in Rehoboth Beach.

Washington, D.C.

The White House and Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C.

When it comes to celebrating the true reason behind Memorial Day, nowhere is quite as patriotic as Washington, D.C. Honor military personnel with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where more than 400,000 fallen soldiers and veterans (plus their family members) are buried. On the National Mall, wander along the long granite wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to read the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died during the Vietnam War. Then, head to the World War II Memorial to pay tribute to those who perished on the battlefields. Average May temperatures in the nation's capital tend to sit in the mid-70s to mid-80s.

Where to stay: After a long day of exploring, head back to a luxury hotel – a great option is The Hay-Adams – or more budget-friendly Airbnb.

Austin, Texas

Aerial of river and greenery with Austin skyline in the background.

Visit the Lone Star State for an authentic Memorial Day weekend experience, complete with mouthwatering Texas barbecue, temperatures in the 80s and 90s, and plenty of time spent enjoying the great outdoors. Austin offers something for everyone, from kayaking in Zilker Metropolitan Park (rental boats are available on-site) to learning about the state's history at the Texas Capitol in central Austin. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake is another beloved natural area where travelers and locals alike can explore quiet trails and picnic along the edge of the water.

Where to stay: Bed down at a hotel like The Driskill , an Airbnb or even a campsite in nearby Texas Hill Country.

Charleston, South Carolina

The Waterfront Park Pineapple Fountain in Charleston, South Carolina, at sunset.

Cobblestone streets, centuries-old oak trees and historic architecture make Charleston a charming getaway year-round. But visiting during Memorial Day weekend means you'll see the city at its best (albeit usually its busiest) before the oppressive summer heat sets in. Average May temperatures sit in the 70s and 80s, rain is minimal, and colorful gardens are in full bloom.

Learn about the history of the city as you cruise through the Charleston Harbor on a boat tour , or admire the flora and fauna of Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. If your holiday weekend experience won't be complete without a beach trip, head to nearby Folly Beach (a little more than 10 miles south of the city) or Sullivan's Island (less than 10 miles southeast) for a day.

Where to stay: Retire for the evening at a luxurious hotel , such as The Spectator Hotel, or stay in one of many quaint vacation rentals to save some cash.

Big Bear Lake, California

Reflections in the waters of Big Bear Lake at Boulder Bay, California, with vacations houses and mountain ridges in the background.

By late May, travelers can typically bid farewell to snowfall in Big Bear Lake and say hello to pleasant temperatures in the low 70s. Located in the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California, about 80 miles northwest of Palm Springs, laid-back Big Bear Lake separates itself from typical long-weekend beach destinations with its endless outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and paddleboarding. Canoes, kayaks and other equipment rentals are available from a bevy of local sports shops dispersed throughout Big Bear Lake. Although there are a few small swimming beaches on the lake, including Meadow Park, keep in mind that the water is fairly chilly year-round.

Where to stay: When it comes to lodging, take your pick from multiple resorts, inns, vacation homes, cabins and lodges. One top option downtown is Sierra Blue Hotel & Swim Club. If you plan to travel with your pet , Big Bear Lakefront Cabins offers pet-friendly cabins with amenities like hot tubs and swimming pools overlooking the lake or lush mountains.

Colorado flags hanging in Larimer Square, Denver.

Celebrate Memorial Day weekend in Denver to enjoy the city's 70-degree weather, as long as you're willing to put up with a little rain (May is typically the city's wettest month, seeing about 2 inches of rainfall on average). Travelers can wander through the Denver Botanic Gardens or explore Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, a naturally formed outdoor venue with on-site hiking trails. If you're looking for a great place to bring kids, head to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, which boasts exhibits about animals, mummies and outer space, all in one venue.

Where to stay: As far as lodging goes, vacationers will have their pick of swanky options such as The Oxford Hotel and airy rental lofts in the heart of downtown.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Moulton Barn in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

Though temperatures are typically still creeping their way into the mid-60s come Memorial Day, visiting Jackson Hole during this shoulder season promises exceptional wildlife-viewing opportunities (think: eagles, bison and moose), cheaper hotel rates and fewer crowds to contend with. Spring also signals the reopening of many park roadways in the nearby Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, as well as the start of whitewater rafting season. Granite Hot Springs Pool reopens for the summer season in late May, so travelers can plan on taking a dip in the steamy 93-degree thermal pool after a fun day of hiking and exploring.

Where to stay: Opt for a rustic cabin to fully embrace Jackson Hole's changing seasons in the wilderness, or pump up the opulence with a stay at a luxury resort such as Rustic Inn Creekside Resort & Spa at Jackson Hole .

Aerial of the Las Vegas Strip at twilight.

Kick off the unofficial start of summer with a trip to Sin City. For an adults-only getaway, travelers can hit the slots, party the night away at a high-energy nightclub or live music venue, and enjoy a few cocktails under the sun at one of Las Vegas ' rowdy pool parties. Late May temperatures typically feature highs in the 90s and lows in the 60s.

Beyond walking around the Strip, popular things to do include visiting the Sphere (a unique new attraction opened in 2023) and taking day trips to more family-friendly outdoor destinations, such as the Grand Canyon , the Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. You can also consider a Las Vegas tour ; fun options range from open-top nighttime bus tours around the city to scenic helicopter rides to food tours sampling a variety of treats.

Where to stay: You can't go wrong with any of the city's iconic resorts or themed hotels if you're looking for the full Vegas experience. Still, some properties, such as the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas , offer a little more tranquility than others.

Palm Springs, California

Brightly colored flowers along the water at a golf course in Palm Springs, California.

Trendy, colorful Palm Springs is an ideal spot for a Memorial Day weekend getaway. Springtime brings picturesque blooms of wildflowers, poppies and lilies, and visitors can enjoy popular attractions like the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway or The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. You'll also have plenty of time for a round at the golf course, boutique shopping in the El Paseo Shopping District, and mouthwatering meals and cocktails at top-notch eateries .

To honor fallen soldiers over the holiday weekend, head to the Palm Springs Air Museum for its annual Memorial Day Flower Drop. At this event, a vintage warbird plane drops more than 3,000 carnations to the crowds below. While you might avoid Palm Springs ' roasting summer temperatures above 100 degrees, you should still expect May highs in the 90s – so plan accordingly for a hike through Joshua Tree National Park or other outdoor activities.

Where to stay: Most of the city's eclectic hotels, inns and bungalows offer on-site pools to cool off in – and the highly rated Holiday House Palm Springs is no exception.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Colorful, historical buildings on the coast of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Plan a trip to Puerto Rico to enjoy the island's beaches and nature preserves, including El Yunque National Forest, and pencil in some time to take a stroll through colorful, picturesque Old San Juan. If you'd like to sink your toes in the sand, head to Condado Beach or Ocean Park Beach to bask in May's 80-degree temps.

You'll also have your pick of historic sites to peruse as well: Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal are two acclaimed forts that feature dungeons, tunnels and original cannons. When night falls, San Juan comes alive with pulsing nightclubs, bars and dance venues. A bonus: Americans do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico.

Where to stay: Lodging options here include a variety of hotels located either on or near the ocean, such as Condado Vanderbilt Hotel . You'll also find an array of modern, well-equipped vacation rentals with pools, city views and other amenities.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Aerial of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Head to St. Thomas for the feel of an international vacation with the ease of domestic travel (Americans don't need a passport to visit this U.S. territory). Though it's not the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands , St. Thomas is arguably the most popular of the three main islands. Since the major tourist season is from December to March, you may find discounted hotel rates and fewer crowds in May without sacrificing enjoyable temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Traveler-favorite activities include swimming and snorkeling at Magens Bay and Coki Beach, plus shopping and strolling along duty-free Main Street. For panoramic views of nearby islands – including Puerto Rico, on a clear day – take a tram ride up to Paradise Point with your camera or smartphone in hand.

Where to stay: Marriott's Frenchman's Cove is a top lodging option in St. Thomas, complete with an infinity-edge pool and a waterslide.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Beach and coastline of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Leave your worries behind with a relaxing long weekend in Ocho Rios, Jamaica . Popular things to do include exploring Dunn's River Falls and Park, relaxing on Ocho Rios Bay Beach, taking a sunset cruise and snorkeling in the clear Caribbean waters, among other activities. Travelers can expect temperatures in the 80s and plenty of sea breeze.

Where to stay: This Caribbean hot spot offers plenty of accommodation options, including hotels , villas and all-inclusive resorts – some of which are adults-only , like Sandals Ochi Beach Resort .

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands

Boardwalk to beach on Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands.

In May, the Caribbean paradise of Turks & Caicos offers highs in the mid-80s. Although this month might bring the occasional rain shower, hotel rates and dissipating crowds during this shoulder season make Memorial Day weekend a great time to visit. Vacationers can check out the tourist hot spot of Providenciales (known as Provo) to enjoy snorkeling and fishing. Provo is home to gorgeous white sand beaches, including Grace Bay Beach, and it's a great spot for water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding.

Where to stay: Stay at a resort like Seven Stars Resort & Spa to take advantage of abundant amenities, or opt for a villa rental near the beach for more privacy.

Tulum, Mexico

The beach and ruins of the Mayan civilization in Tulum, Mexico, on a sunny day.

With its white sand beaches, Instagram-worthy boutique hotels and average May temperatures in the 80s, Tulum is a paradise worth visiting. Spend your days sunbathing at Playa Paraíso, exploring the Mayan ruins or swimming in El Gran Cenote.

Where to stay: You can find a number of highly rated accommodations in Tulum if you're looking for a pampering trip – consider Ahau Tulum , for example. The town's scenic Airbnbs are a great choice as well: In fact, many vacation rentals here offer private pools and Jacuzzis, plus tons of greenery and cozy outdoor lounge chairs for a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend stay.

Planning to travel Memorial Day weekend? Here's how to be savvy — and safe

Katherine Fan

Memorial Day weekend is here, and many of us have trips planned for the long weekend.

As vaccination rates in the U.S. approach 40%, more people are booking getaways for this summer, starting with Memorial Day. AAA recently reported that more than 37 million people plan to travel from May 27 to May 31 — a 60% increase from last year's holiday weekend.

If you do plan to hit the road — whether on a road trip closer to home or a flight to one of the destinations open to U.S. residents — here are tips to stay safe and have fun.

Before you leave

Having a perfect long weekend getaway starts well before you lock your front door for the next few days — so keep these best practices to keep in mind.

Know the busiest days for travel, and plan accordingly

best day to travel on memorial day weekend

The newest guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say fully vaccinated individuals can travel safely within the U.S., which means expect this Memorial Day weekend to be filled with travelers looking to get away for a few days. Friday and Sunday are undoubtedly going to be packed days at the airport and on the highway.

This means you'll want to allow for extra time to get through TSA security lines (especially because of a shortage of TSA agents) and expect heavier traffic on the roads.

Don't let the bad guys know you're not home

In this day and age, many people Instagram their every move as a way to keep friends and family posted during trips. But you know who else loves knowing when you're eating-praying-loving your way through your first trip since 2019? Thieves.

In extreme cases, insurance companies have even been known to reject homeowner claims when there's self-uploaded social media evidence proving they were away from home.

So, if you're committed to leaving town during the long weekend, be sure to keep quiet on social media. Plus, lock the doors and windows; arm your security system if you have one; let a responsible neighbor know to check in on your place every day or two; and turn on your "smart" lights.

TPG's senior travel editor Melanie Lieberman even asks a friend or a neighbor to park in the driveway when she's driving out of town.

Make sure you have your travel documents

Sure, you want to make sure your passport or license have a valid expiration date — but these days, travelers might need an entirely different set of travel documents, even when traveling domestically.

Depending on where you're going and how you're getting there, you may need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within a certain period of time before arrival. These documents may be required by your airline, your destination and may even be required to return home — so keep track of all your testing information and keep printed documents on hand, even if they're not explicitly required.

And keep in mind that fully vaccinated individuals aren't automatically exempt from needing a negative test for some destinations. Know the difference between vaccine passports, proof of vaccination and proof of negative COVID-19 test, and make sure you know which you'll need for your destination.

If you're driving, tune up your car

best day to travel on memorial day weekend

The last thing you need is a flat tire or a coolant leak during a long road trip — and we know the vast majority of travelers will continue to choose cars over planes during this Memorial Day holiday.

"I always leave the day before everyone else does, or early that morning," travel writer Penny Sadler told TPG in 2019 . "To prepare, I pack the night before [and] I fill the car with gas as many days before departure as possible to avoid waiting in lines. Also, any needed service or maintenance, [I] take care of that a couple of weeks in advance. Basically, I just try to have everything ready to roll early in the morning!"

Book your rental car ahead of time

With the current rental car shortage and astronomical prices in some destinations, you'll want to book your rental car as early in advance as you can.

If you haven't booked a rental car yet in a destination prone to recent shortages, try off-airport locations or alternative rental options such as a local car dealership or Silvercar.

Clean your house to make coming home more comfortable

Coming home from a trip is always a bummer, but returning to a mess is doubly so, especially if you've grown accustomed to turn-down service and freshly ironed sheets.

"I always like to leave my apartment clean before I travel," Sasha Perez told TPG. "It's just nice to come back to a clean apartment [and] fresh sheets."

George Gensler, a writer and columnist, also told TPG in 2019 that a frozen meal or can of soup already available makes coming home that much easier, especially for those late-night returns."Before I leave for any travel ... I make sure I have toilet paper, water and something quick and easy to prepare for food when I get home."

Label your belongings

Darren Murph told TPG he prints out stickers with his contact information and labels everything he brings on his travels. "This has saved my AirPods, a water bottle (three times) and a hard drive with wedding photos," he said. "I even put them on the little charging blocks that come with your iPod, since those blocks are so easy to forget in a hotel room or plane."

Continue following CDC guidelines

best day to travel on memorial day weekend

This might sound like a no-brainer, but it's never been more important to remember that staying healthy — and keeping others healthy — should be your top priority right now.

If you're flying, you'll still need to wear a mask while at the airport and in the air. And many places still have mask mandates in place for indoor spaces. Whether you're flying or driving, make sure to continue to social distance when possible, and be generous with the hand sanitizer and handwashing throughout your trip.

During your trip

Sometimes, even the best-laid travel plans can go awry, so savvy travelers don't stop being proactive after takeoff.

Keep valuables safe and accessible

Mitchell Stoutin, TPG's director of engineering, sets himself up for success by clipping his car and house keys to a designated spot inside his carry-on bag. "I won't be using them while away, and I don't want them to get lost in the shuffle," he said in 2019. He also leaves his airport parking ticket hidden inside the car so he doesn't have to worry about losing it during his trip.

Take control of your comfort

Planes are notoriously cold, hot and generally uncomfortable by turns. There's not much you can do about the central ventilation, but you can adapt by bringing your own comfort: Cozy socks, noise-canceling headphones , a sweater or travel blanket, even eye masks .

Of course, you'll need to pack the essentials, too, because peace of mind goes a long way toward making the travel experience more enjoyable. Yes, you'll need to wear a face mask over your nose and mouth for the duration of the trip. But you might also want to pack gloves; a face shield or glasses to keep you from touching your face; and extra hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes.

Use apps to streamline your experience

Ruksana Hussain, a Los Angeles-based travel journalist , uses the GateGuru app to see what amenities are available near her terminal and gate. "It saves me time finding food or specific services," she told TPG last year . This might be especially helpful now that so many concessions are closed or operating with limited hours.

When you return

Do your laundry right away.

Don't get me wrong: I hate doing my chores at the best of times, let alone at the end of a long trip and travel day. But I've found the benefits of washing my clothes as soon as I get home far outweigh the fairly minimal discomfort of being responsible. I wake up the next morning feeling more prepared to return to my daily routine, and it's always nice to be greeted with fresh piles of clean, folded clothing — rather than heaps of dirty laundry.

To make things a little easier, I separate my lights and darks in two separate laundry bags when I travel, so I just shake them out and start the machine as soon as I get home.

Back up your photos

If your phone and camera aren't already synced to the cloud, it's a great idea to download and back up your photos, videos and other digital souvenirs as soon as you return home. Mishaps do happen, and memories can be lost very easily with one accidental slip of the wrist or a device malfunction.

Check for symptoms

Be mindful of any new symptoms when you return home — even if you are vaccinated.

If you're vaccinated and do develop any symptoms, the CDC recommends you self-isolate and get tested. The CDC is still recommending all non-vaccinated travelers self-quarantine for a full seven days after travel and get a COVID-19 test within three to five days, regardless of whether or not symptoms arise.

42.3 Million Americans Expected to Travel for Memorial Day Weekend

Air travel set to surpass pre-pandemic numbers as demand for flights soars.

best day to travel on memorial day weekend

WASHINGTON, DC (May 15, 2023) AAA projects 42.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend*, a 7% increase over 2022. This year, 2.7 million more people will travel for the unofficial start of summer compared to last year, a sign of what’s to come in the months ahead.

“This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “More Americans are planning trips and booking them earlier, despite inflation. This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports.”

Nearly 3.4 million travelers are expected to fly to their destinations this Memorial Day, that’s an increase of 11% over last year. Air travel over the holiday weekend is projected to exceed pre-pandemic levels, with 170,000 more passengers – or 5.4% more – than in 2019. Despite high ticket prices, demand for flights is skyrocketing. This Memorial Day weekend could be the busiest at airports since 2005.

Memorial Day road trips are up 6% over last year. 37.1 million Americans will drive to their destinations, an increase of more than 2 million. Gas prices are lower this holiday compared to last year, when the national average was more than $4 a gallon. Despite the lower prices at the pump, car travel this holiday will be shy of pre-pandemic numbers by about 500,000 travelers.

More people this holiday are taking other modes of transportation, like buses and trains. These travelers are expected to total 1.85 million, an increase of 20.6% over 2022.

Best/Worst Times to Travel and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, expects Friday, May 26 to be the busiest day on the roads during the long Memorial Day weekend. The best times to travel by car are in the morning or evening after 6 p.m. The lightest traffic days will be Saturday and Sunday . Major metro areas like Boston, New York, Seattle, and Tampa will likely see travel times double compared to normal.

“With lower fuel prices and more travelers on the road compared to last year, drivers should expect long delays this holiday weekend, especially in and around major metros as commuters mix with Memorial Day travelers,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic. Our advice is to avoid driving during peak hours or use alternative routes.”

Top Destinations

AAA booking data for the Memorial Day weekend shows tourist hotspots like Orlando, New York City, and Las Vegas are top domestic destinations. Cruise port cities in Florida and Alaska, as well as Seattle, are high on the list given the 50% increase in domestic cruise bookings compared to last year. Other popular U.S. cities this Memorial Day include Denver, Boston, Anaheim, and Canton, Ohio – home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“We are seeing a demand for iconic cities, international vacation packages, and cruises with included amenities that provide more value for the price,” Twidale added.

Travelers are paying more for Memorial Day trips this year, in large part due to the rising cost of airline tickets. AAA booking data shows a 40% increase in airfare to this year’s Top Destinations. But that’s not stopping travelers from booking flights abroad. International travel is surging with bookings 250% higher this holiday weekend compared to 2022. European cities are the most popular, including Rome, Paris, Dublin, London, Barcelona, and Athens. International car rentals are up more than 80% over 2022. AAA reports strong sales for International Driving Permits this year, almost double what they were last year. The passport courier service RushMyPassport is also seeing an unprecedented number of applications for expedited passport and visa services this year.

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from S&P Global Market Intelligence’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior —all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 17, 2023.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For purposes of this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 25 to Monday, May 29. The five-day holiday length is consistent with previous holiday periods.

What to know about the new Sleepy Hollow before year-round tubing opens Memorial Day weekend

Don't feel like waiting until it's freezing outside to enjoy winter sports?

Starting Memorial Day weekend, Des Moines residents will get to sled almost year-round at Sleepy Hollow Sports Park's new record-setting tubing hill. Eventually, snowboarding and skiing will be added, too.

Measured at roughly 600 feet, it will be the largest all-weather tubing hill in the world , according to Polk County Conservation Director Rich Leopold.

In the lead-up to the 2020 election, all eyes are on Iowa. Get updates of all things Iowa politics delivered to your inbox.

The 76-acre Sleepy Hollow park, 4051 Dean Ave. in Des Moines, has been a central Iowa favorite for tubing and sledding in the winter and for Renaissance fairs, festivals, comedy shows and concerts in the summer. The county's conservation board purchased it from longtime owners Rick and Mary Flatt in the fall of 2021 for about $3.5 million.

Leopold says the county wants to keep the traditions of Sleepy Hollow alive but bring in some modern twists. The synthetic snow hill will fill wintertime recreation gaps, but also help keep options available during winters that keep getting "shorter and shorter," he said.

Once open, Leopold anticipates the park could have a couple hundred thousand visitors annually.

Here's what you need to know about Sleepy Hollow before it opens:

When does the Sleepy Hollow tubing hill open?

The tubing hill is set to open the weekend of May 25-27, 2024, according to Leopold.

What changes are coming to Sleepy Hollow?

The existing tubing slope was resurfaced with Snowflex, a synthetic turf that feels like a squishy, sleek wrestling mat, Leopold said. It has about 650 spigots that shoot water onto the mat, which is purified and recycled from a park pond filled with water pumped in from Fourmile Creek.

"That's what gives it the go," Leopold said. "So you might get 30 miles per hour going down this thing. It's going to be awesome."

A conveyor belt will get users up the hill and staff at the top will assist people into tubes. There's also a "de-escalation area" at the bottom of the hill to slow people down, Leopold said. Conservation officials also added new lighting and a sound system.

The first phase, estimated at $2.5 million, was paid for with the voter-approved  Polk County Water & Land Legacy Bond , which funds water quality projects, parks and trails.

Will the Snowflex hill actually run all year?

The short answer: Eventually it will run for most of the year.

In 2024, the hill will be open from Memorial Day weekend to roughly Labor Day weekend, according to Jessica Lown, county conservation community outreach supervisor. It will not be open for the winter season until conservation officials can purchase a new snow-making system to replace its current aging system.

Generally, during the warm weather months, the turf's water misting system will allow people to tube, ski and snowboard on the hill. The water misting system has to be turned off during the cold winter months to keep freezing pipes from bursting, and park employees will push snow over the top of the turf with the help of a snow-making system to give users an authentic experience, officials said.

Eventually, county officials say the Snowflex will allow skiing, snowboarding and tubing for about 10 months out of the year. The off-seasons will allow park employees to prepare the turf for summer and winter use, as well as for routine maintenance.

What are the hours in 2024?

The hours from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend are:

  • 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday
  • 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays
  • Noon to 9 p.m. Sundays

How will the tubing, skiing schedules work?

Initially, park officials only will allow tubing on the hill to get a sense of the flow of traffic and the volume of customers, Lown said. They also will gauge customers' appetite for snowboarding and skiing to determine when and how often those sports will be allowed.

Lown said it's still unknown how long it will take for skiing and tubing to be added.

How much does it cost?

Exact fees for admission haven't been set up yet, Lown said.

Generally, Lown says there will likely be a base fee to allow customers two-hour access to the lift with two complementary tubes, which will be available on-site. Other safety equipment, like helmets, will be available for an additional fee.

The county conservation board is set to vote and approve fees at its May 8 meeting.

Will Sleepy Hollow still host events like the Renaissance Faire?

Rick and Mary Flatt will continue to host annual events at Sleepy Hollow such as the Renaissance Faire at Sleepy Hollow and the Sleepy Hollow Haunted Scream Park through a contract with the conservation board.

Camping at Sleepy Hollow for the Iowa State Fair also is available through the county.

What's next for Sleepy Hollow?

Lots more is on the horizon for the park, Leopold says. The county is working on a feasibility study this year to gather feedback on adding a smaller Snowflex bunny hill, revamping its two remaining snow hills and building a lodge that could include a brew pub, a deck, a ski shop and lockers. Officials also would like to replace an aging snow-making system.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing could eventually be added to the park.

Construction on those plans could start as soon as 2026, Leopold said.

As Easter has passed, two major holidays are approaching in May in the U.S.: Mother's Day and Memorial Day.

Only Memorial Day is a federally recognized holiday when banks, schools and many nonessential government offices are closed and employees get a paid holiday.

Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday in May, granting many people a three-day weekend and traditionally marking the unofficial start of summer. It was created to honor military members who lost their lives in service to the country.

Mother's Day is not a federal holiday in the same sense as Memorial Day, but on May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, according to history.com .

Here’s when Memorial Day is this year, how it originated and why we continue to celebrate it.

What holiday is after Easter?

In the United States, celebrations and holidays that come after Easter include Cinco de Mayo on May 5, Mother's Day on May 12 this year and Memorial Day on May 27.

Memorial Day is always celebrated on the last Monday of May. In 2024, Memorial Day is on Monday, May 27.

It was first observed on May 30, 1868, and for decades on that date after Gen. John A. Logan, the leader of the Grand Army of the Republic for Northern Civil War veterans, had called for a nationwide day of remembrance.

In 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act – to give federal employees more three-day weekends throughout the year – Memorial Day moved to the last Monday in May. It was also declared a federal holiday in 1971.

When is Memorial Day weekend 2024?

Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday, May 24, 2024, and lasts through the holiday on Monday, May 27.

Dear Fellow Travellers

We're thinking of visiting Suzdal on a one-day trip from Moscow this mid-August. We did our homework, and found the best way is to go to Vladimir by train and take a bus to Suzdal. We also checked the fare/timetable with Russian National Railway's official website ( http://pass.rzd.ru ) , then started wondering whether it is worth to book trains in advance. Yes, it's a busy season and we feel safe, but none in our group speaks Russian, and if something happens, we cannot catch the train we booked, all the money will be wasted. So, would we be better off not to book any train and go with the 'suburban' train that does not take booking (incidentally RZD site does not tell us how much it costs - maybe because it is a different operator and we cannot buy the ticket on their site?) Or would you recommend booking trains in advance?

Also, we've been trying to find a bus timetable between Vladimir and Suzdal, but so far we couldn't.

Could anybody help?

Thanks in advance, Ken.

' class=

There are not many suburban trains to Vladimir, and they are usually packed, as any suburban trains to other regions. You trip is going to be very uncomfortable (I know, I've tried if once 'cause experss tickets were sold out). Suggestion: for trip to Vladimir, book a # 7082 train: https://rasp.yandex.ru/thread/7082_0_2000001_g19_4 (or a # 728 train if tickets are not too expensive). For return trip, maybe train # 709.

> RZD site does not tell us how much it costs - maybe because it is a different operator

:))) There is no 'other operator'. RR site just does not sell commuter train tickets.

> bus timetable between Vladimir and Suzdal

https://rasp.yandex.ru/all-transport/vladimir--suzdal . In short , every 30 minutes.

And the last: if possible, allocate 2 days to Suzdal and Vladimir.

' class=

The train you can book on rzd.ru, fast train to Nozhniy Novgorod via Vladimir is nice, comfortable and surely needs to be booked in advance. You can leave early in the morning, and reach Vladimir in under 2 hrs; as opposed to 3+ hrs by a suburban train. It costs like R350-400, (do not remember easily), but fast train is wirth effort.

As for getting the train - station has signs in English, board is in English and even these trains are annonced in English. You can visit the station the day before for orientation... Many people have done that before.

As for going to Suzdal from Vladimir, tgere are plenty of buses, right from train station sq. in Vladimir, but taxi would be faster and easier, esp.for several people, just use Yandex/Gett app.

Thanks a lot, Dmitri and Vasily! You guys are really great - we will definitely book fast trains. One thing which is not urgent - is it cheaper to buy return tickets from Moscow to Vladimir, or the two single/one-way tickets are the same price? In Britain, they are completely different: returns are often cheaper but sometimes two singles are cheaper - very confusing. We hope Russian system is more straightforward. Thanks again, Ken.

You can buy a return ticket only for suburban trains, and it will cost as 2 one-way tickets anyway. For everything else, you just buy 2 singles one by one - simple as it can be :).

Thanks a lot, Dmitri. Glad to know Russian rail system is not so complicated. Cheers, Ken.

And some more thoughts on the matter :).

1. If you don't feel confident, arrive at the station somewhat earlier, like 30 minutes in advance (not 10 like I did). I know half an hour is a bit overkill... just for the peace of mind :).

2. Vladimir trains depart from the Gorky direction dead end platforms (highlited here: http://yandex.ru/maps/213/moscow/?ll=37.662677%2C55.755958&mode=poi&poi%5Bpoint%5D=37.661626%2C55.756222&poi%5Buri%5D=ymapsbm1%3A%2F%2Forg%3Foid%3D188728336151&z=18 ). Do not enter main building, you don't need it.

3. I tend to agree with Vasili's advice about taxi. Suzdal bus staiton is on the outskirts of the town, you'll have either walk to the center (as I did - but I had 2 days instead of one) or wait for the local bus. Taxi will take you straight to the town centre.

I specify that high-speed trains to Vladimir leave from the first high platform. It is in the opposite part of the Kursk railway station than dead-end platforms. Common local trains to Vladimir depart from dead-end platforms.

Thanks everyone. I'm sure we'll have a super time in Suzdal. Cheers, Ken
