6 far-flung destinations you can fly to from Belfast

If you live in Northern Ireland, a lot of the time you’ll need to travel to Dublin if you want to fly somewhere exotic. But that isn’t always the case. While Belfast International Airport mostly flies to other European airports, it does offer a few long-haul flights to far-flung places. Here are six places you can fly to from Belfast that aren’t in Europe.

Cuba is becoming more accessible to the rest of the world, including Belfast. Flights are available to Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (also known as Varadero Airport), which is just under two hours from Havana.

If it’s a fun-filled beach holiday you’re looking for, then you can’t do much better than Cancun. Home to numerous all-inclusive resort hotels, the beaches and nightlife in Cancun are world-famous. If it’s history you’re after, however, the ancient city of Tulum is only a day-trip away.

Orlando is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world – and it’s not hard to imagine why. Home to world-famous roller coasters and theme parks, there’s plenty to keep the children entertained morning to night.

Away from the parks you’ll find amazing shopping and dining – plus, there’s the other side of Florida that often gets forgotten about. Cities like Kissimmee, St Pete’s and Tampa are only an hour’s drive away, and offer a different experience than the one you’ll have in Orlando. They’re perfect for a few days of relaxation before you fly back.

If you’re looking for an all-night party, then you need to book a flight to Las Vegas . The famous 4-mile strip is lined with casinos, A-list entertainment and an infectious atmosphere – all essential ingredients for a night out. Then during the day there’s always a pool party happening somewhere.

New York City is somewhere that requires no introduction. Full of shopping, entertainment, famous landmarks and delicious food – there are several reasons why people return to this buzzing metropolis year after year. Flights run twice a week to Newark Liberty International Airport.

Barrhead Travel says reports have shown that people are more eager than ever to get their annual summer holidays locked in this year.

Belfast travel expert Kelly Hutchinson, Branch Manager at Barrhead Travel, has shared some money saving advice if you’ve still to book your holiday this year.

She said: “Summer is synonymous with holidays! It’s the season we all look forward to every single year; a chance to spend quality time with friends and family, explore new places, go on adventures, and make memories with the people we love the most.

“Although it’s always worth it when your face first hits the sun, planning a holiday all by yourself can be a time-consuming and costly activity. By taking some precautionary steps and planning ahead you could really be saving yourself hundreds and making for a much more stress-free holiday."

Book with a reputable travel agent

Travelling across the world, no matter how far, is no small feat. So, consider using a trusted and experienced travel agent to completely transform the planning process.

With a wealth of knowledge and resources on hand, we can guarantee expert advice to suit your budgets and financial protection in case something goes wrong.

Travel agents are also a great tool for securing exclusive tours, excursions and activities at a discounted rate, alleviating any stress and pressure to do it yourself.

Try something new

If you don’t have a definite destination in mind, it might be useful to consider more unique holiday spots.

The most popular European hot-spots, including Spain, Portugal and Greece, all have off-the-beaten track alternatives which will likely have higher availability at lower price-point, particularly when booking late.

Barrhead Travel, Belfast, Named Top NI Travel Agent at TTG Top 50 Awards

Ireland – North and South – was well represented at the recent TTG Top 50 Travel Agencies Awards 2024 , which took place in Manchester last week and honoured the top agents across the UK and Ireland.

The Irish part of the awards were split between the Republic and Northern Ireland. As mentioned, elsewhere on ITTN/TNT today, Magic Vacations – the Kinsale-based theme park destination specialist won the top travel agency award for the Republic.

Barrhead Travel, in Belfast, was named TTG’s Top Travel Agency for Northern Ireland .

Runners-up in the Republic category – which was sponsored by Jamaica – were Fahy Travel , in Galway; and Marble City Travel in Kilkenny.

Runners-up in the Northern Ireland category – which was sponsored by Attraction World – were Oasis Travel, Lisburn ; and Oasis Travel, Lisburn Road, Belfast .

Barrhead Travel Reveals Next NI Location for Expansion

Barrhead Travel has confirmed that its next phase of expansion will focus on Northern Ireland where it plans to open a new location before the end of 2024

Barrhead Travel has confirmed that its next phase of expansion will focus on Northern Ireland where it plans to open a new location before the end of 2024.

The travel group revealed at its 2023 Annual Conference in Palma that retail expansion would continue during 2024 in addition to its commitments to existing store refurbishments, investment in new websites, and the launch of further specialist departments including its US division.

Expansion in Northern Ireland will include the opening of a new store this year. It will become the second Barrhead Travel branded store in Northern Ireland following the opening of its Belfast branch in 2017. The group has also met recent growing demand in the region by launching a homeworking division in 2022 with a team of agents working remotely across the country.

In keeping with the group’s pre-Covid expansion strategy, Barrhead Travel says the exact location will be led by its people and are actively recruiting for experienced agents to help identify local opportunities and join the team.

Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, said:

“With 2023 being a record-breaking year, we’re so excited to be expanding in Northern Ireland, a place that’s been a fantastic home for us since 2017.

“We see great opportunities for an agent like Barrhead Travel to grow the high street market here. Northern Irish holidaymakers are very enthusiastic about travel agents and the support we have received from our existing communities over the last seven years has been wonderful.

“What is important for us is firstly identifying the right people for our next location. Our pre-Covid expansion followed this blueprint and has brought us huge success. Ultimately, it’s the local people who know the market better than anyone else, which is why we plan on recruiting first and then working with the team to secure the perfect unit on the right high street.

“We’re looking for people who are extremely passionate about travel and customer service, but who also love working with their local communities.

“There are a few specific locations we have in mind – but we’re open to the right opportunity. As well as investing in bricks and mortar, we’ll continue to invest in our people through our industry-leading training and development programmes.”

Barrhead Travel’s recruitment drive in Northern Ireland will create an initial five full-time positions. The new store will bring the group’s retail footprint to 90 locations throughout the UK.
