Admire stunning views from the tourist train

Admire stunning views from the tourist train

The Flamselvi River flows at various speeds through the middle of a green valley and between houses with coloured roofs dotted along the riverbanks. Waterfalls hurtle down steep slopes. From the tourist train which links Flam and Myrdal and climbs to over 860 metres, the views are amazing: each as extraordinary as the last. Using a second train, you can reach the charming town of Voss, passing by spectacular scenery including precipices and high waterfalls. Unforgettable photos are a given.

Explore the Geiranger Fjord

Explore the Geiranger Fjord

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, the Geiranger Fjord is one of the most famous in Norway. Walking around this fjord, enjoy being in total harmony with the impressive and yet comfortingly calm natural surroundings. Some of the falls that end their frenetic journeys in the Geiranger Fjord are also some of the best-known in the region, like the Seven Sisters , the Suitor and the Bridal Veil.

Kayak in the Naeroyfjord

Kayak in the Naeroyfjord

The Naeroyfjord is a Norwegian fjord that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoying its beauty from a kayak on the water remains a special experience. The impressive surrounding mountains, and the waterfalls and rivers that throw themselves into the fjord create breathtaking panoramas and contribute to its splendour.

Hike near the Briksdal Glacier

Hike near the Briksdal Glacier

A Norwegian cruise gives you the chance to explore natural wonders that are totally unique. Part of the Jostedal, Europe's biggest glacier, the Briksdal Glacier only adds to the enchanting Norwegian fjord scenery. Rising up 1,200 metres, the jagged white and blue ice moves down the valley. A 3 km walk gives you the opportunity to admire its full beauty and extent.

Naviguer dans le Lysefjorden

Sail on the Lysefjorden

Lysefjorden is famous among all adventurers. The toughest climb the 4,444 wooden Flørli stairs. Risk takers have photos taken on Kjerag , which is famous for its rock stuck between two rocky walls. Others prefer to get close to the edge of the 600-metre Preikestolen cliff. However, Lysefjorden is just as impressive from its crystalline waters. Cliffs, waterfalls and green mountains captivate visitors.

Walk around Alesund

Walk around Alesund

The town is by the water and seems to melt into the hills on the horizon. Alesund on Norway's west coast is an attractive place with paved alleys, canals and Art Nouveau buildings. The decoration and paint on the facades make the town special, after it was devastated by a fire in 1904 and rebuilt to meet " Jugendstil " regulations: a unique architectural style.

Visit the Bryggen area of Bergen

Visit the Bryggen area of Bergen

Although Bergen is the second biggest city in Norway, in our imaginations it retains the feel of a northern medieval village. Images of Bryggen 's coloured wooden houses by the port stay in the memory. This district, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, has made an impact on the country's history and even more so on that of the North Sea. From the 14th century, the port joined the Hanseatic League set up by the Germans with regional trading posts up to the Baltic Sea. At that time, the Bryggen area was exclusively for German merchants. It would be a shame to miss out on this charming district before leaving for the fjords.

Dos. Although the Norwegians shake hands to greet each other, they are quick to use informal language.

Don'ts. Civic-mindedness is a cornerstone of life in Norwegian society. Special favours are banned, you sincerely thank anyone you speak to (whether they are a friend or a stranger), you don't queue-jump and there are street patrols to prevent conflict.

Unique features

What if getting rid of all time constraints were the real luxury? The municipal council on Sommarøy Island in the very north of Norway near Trosmo has asked the government to ban time in the summer! This initiative isn't as crazy as it sounds when you realise that the sun doesn't set here for 69 days during midsummer. According to some locals, watches and timetables have actually been got rid of already, meaning it's not uncommon to see children playing and people swimming or mowing the lawn during what's supposed to be night-time.

luxury cruise to norway

The element of Norwegian cuisine that we are most familiar with is smoked salmon. Although the fish is often prominent on people's plates here, lamb is also well-loved. The animals are reared locally in the fresh air and provide high-quality meat, especially for pinnekjøtt : a rack of lamb or mutton salted in brine or seawater and served at Christmas. Brunost , a brown cheese with a caramel flavour, is also widely eaten.

Myths & legends

Trolls are found again and again in Norse mythology and first appeared in the Middle Ages. These myths were a key part of the Viking religion until Scandinavia's Christianisation. Trolls were most often associated with hostile natural environments foreign to people like oceans, mountains and forests. They therefore symbolised natural forces and the difficulties of living in society, and were fear-inspiring. For example, they were blamed for kidnapping women and children.

In the spotlight

To remove the need for local ferries to come and go between eight of the fjords and to open up a fast road on its west coast, Norway is looking into a huge and innovative floating tunnel and bridge project . This would suit certain large fjords where features like conventional tunnels and suspension bridges can't be built.

Books. Through portraits of four generations of women, A Hundred Years is an example of autobiographical fiction which combines and untangles stories, tragedies and family taboos. Herbjørg Wassmo also depicts the hard lives and combative natures of these mothers with so many more and less wanted children in Nordland: the northernmost region in Norway.

Music. Native to northern Norway and Scandinavia, the Sámi people have long been repressed by successive governments. Their language and culture were only recognised in 1988. For a few years, joik traditional Sámi music has been seeing a renaissance and becoming popular. Young Sámi singers like Marja Mortensson and Elle Márjá Eira pair these emotional and nostalgic songs with contemporary and electronic music.

Film. Directed by Arne Skouen in 1957, Nine Lives is inspired by real events during World War Two. Jan Baalsrud is the only survivor on his ship after a German military attack off the Norwegian coast. Hunted by the Nazis, he tries to reach Sweden: a neutral country in the conflict. Throughout the story, magnificent landscapes are shown: snowy mountains, white plains, fjords and icy cliffs.

Facts and figures

Sognefjord is one of the biggest fjords in Norway, covering 204 kilometres . This makes it the longest in Europe and the second longest in the world after Scoresby Sund in Greenland. With an average width of 4.5 kilometres , it is also the widest fjord in Norway. Its depth varies between 100 and 1,308 metres .

Norwegian Fjords Cruises

Explore the most amazing Nordic treasures with a Norwegian Fjords cruise

The Norwegian Fjords are undoubtedly among the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world, capable of inspiring awe with their majestic beauty and timeless atmosphere. Norway has over a thousand Fjords, Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord being the largest. Since 2005, they have featured in the list of UNESCO heritage sites – and they’re now accessible on an exclusive MSC Norwegian Fjords cruise.   The Norway Fjords cruise is one of the best ways to visit these earthly and imposing spectacles thanks to the deep water surrounding them, which is both smooth and easy to navigate. During the Norwegian Fjords cruise 2024 - 2025 seasons, you can admire these imposing examples of natural beauty first-hand and from the best possible vantage point.   Via the Fjord waters, it is possible to reach some of Norway’s most beautiful cities, including Bergen. Far-off the beaten path, Bergen is surrounded by the Sognefjord, the second longest Fjord in the world which extends for 204 km.   For our adventurous guests, the natural landscape surrounding the Fjords, with all their wild and untouched features, are nevertheless easy to explore. Book your Norwegian Fjords cruise excursion  in advance and you can look forward to special excursion routes, both in the mountains and on the glaciers themselves.   Select itineraries for MSC cruises to Northern Europe  include a Norwegian Fjords cruise option. For a truly unforgettable holiday discovering the Norwegian Fjords and the main cities of Norway , start browsing by passenger and destination above.

Luxury Norwegian Fjords Cruises

Commence on a nautical expedition to see awe-inspiring snowy mountains, charming fishing villages and colourful houses dotted along the coast with our luxury Norwegian Fjords cruise. It is definitely one to tick off the bucket list!

A cruise through the Norwegian Fjords offers one of the most imposing landscapes in the world. As the Fjords mountains appear on the horizon, be prepared for a surge of adventure. In the springtime, you’ll see glistening waterfalls crashing into cool waters as the snow melts away from the mountains, climb the towering heights of Pulpit Rock or immerse yourself in the captivating, indigenous culture.

Cities to visit

Visit Norway’s most beautiful city, Bergen. Learn of legendary tales as you go round the Bryggens museum before a stroll through the picture perfect streets of deep red and burnt orange houses. Ascend the funicular mountainside railway, 320 metres up to Floyen, where you will discover hiking paths and once-in-a-lifetime views of the city below. After a leisurely stroll back down, drinking in the cleanest of air, browse the famed fish market for some lunch!

Stavanger is a city of history and culture. There is no better location to enjoy Norway’s rich heritage than this former European Capital of Culture, which offers an astounding variety of museums, galleries, and events. Marvel at the 12th-century cathedral and don’t forget to visit the Swords in Rock monument; three enormous Viking swords, representing peace, unity, and freedom, commemorating the union of Norway.

If adventure is what you are after, take a jaunt into Flåm where you can experience the fjords up close. Hire a kayak and paddle near the plummeting waterfalls, dwarfed by the surrounding fjords. Encounter one of the most scenic train journeys on Flåm Railway as you scale up the high mountains for the finest views.

On a luxury Norwegian Fjords cruise, you will sail past the Seven Sisters waterfall, a sight not to be missed! Waking up at the crack of dawn is certainly worth it to see this amazing wonder as you glide into Geiranger. Once you have docked in Geiranger, a UNESCO World Heritage site full of bakeries and coffee shops, begin a trek along the 327 steps of the Waterfall Trail to discover trickling and tumbling waterfalls, such as the sublime Storfossen.

Our experts say

The Norwegian Fjords scenery is breath-taking. The spectacular fjords, waterfalls and glaciers make this my favourite cruise destination. There is no better feeling than waking up, enjoying breakfast on your balcony and watching the fjords sail past slowly. The Norwegian Fjords are great for a first time cruise experience.  Richard Cross – Commercial Manager

Best Time To Visit The Norwegian Fjords

Visiting Norway’s breathtaking scenery can be done all year round. Generally, Norwegian Fjords season runs from early spring through to late September which gives you the option of quieter times in the later season. Go during spring for the best chance to see snow-capped mountains in their full glory. Winter months ensure a greater opportunity to view the Northern Lights.

Top tip: June and July are by far our recommendation of time of year to visit – warm weather and opportunities for daylight in the evening – even on deck at midnight its still not dark!

Picture this… wrapped up, sitting on your balcony delving into a gorgeous breakfast while gliding through the magical fjords.

Norway - Luxury Cruise

One of the most beautiful cruise destinations in the world, Norway captivates with sublime natural beauty, a storied heritage and the friendliest of people. Cruises here focus on the majestic fjords, of course, delivering rugged coastlines, snow-capped mountains, dizzying waterfalls and small villages characterized by quaint wooden houses.

With dozens of UNESCO World Heritage sites and the grand natural landscape as your personal playground, Norway is a trove of Scandinavian discovery. Luxury cruising in this part of the world offers spectacular vistas, and the incredible Norwegian fjords, as you would assume, are the main draw. Prepare to be stunned by the waterfalls, the wildlife, mountains and cliffsides, and to be drawn into the numerous opportunities for outdoor adventure. Prime movers here include Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn and Hurtigruten, all pros at coastline exploration,

pulling into many ports up and down the coast. Oslo delights with its green spaces and intriguing history, good food and fun. When visitors have their fill of the shopping on Karl Johans gate, they wander to Vigeland Park, the Viking Ship Museum, Akershus Fortress and the Royal Palace. The university town of Bergen is smaller, but just as vibrant, offering dramatic scenery, unique museums, ample hiking

and farm-to-table food. The same goes for scenic ports like Stavanger, Geiranger, Alesund and Flam. Arctic stops in the north take in the ports at Tromso, Honnigsvag, the Lofoten Islands and the North Cape, which is the northernmost point of Continental Europe. If you’re looking for the Northern Lights or for a taste of the Midnight Sun, you will find them in the Svalbard, a group of islands above the Arctic Circle between Norway and the North Pole.

Svalbard, Norway

Exploring the svalbard archipelago in the "land of the midnight sun".

The otherworldly, glacier-carved landscapes of Norway's Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean – of which Spitsbergen is the largest island – are home to the largest concentration of polar bears in the world… around 3,000 of them! Our small-ship cruise, "Arctic Allure: Spitsbergen and the Midnight Sun, takes you to explore the archipelago's jagged mountains, steep-sided valleys, sheer cliffs, fjords, calving glaciers that crackle and groan, and the remains of old whaling outposts and mining camps established by Norwegians, Americans and Russians over a century ago. Keep your eyes open for some of those polar bears… as well as bearded seals, blue and white whales, Arctic foxes, and Arctic moose.

Exploring the Arctic region

Above the arctic circle, in the "land of the midnight sun".

As you cruise along the coast of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean, you'll encounter islands of glaciers, fjords, and natural "ice sculpture," revered for their silent majesty. Here, in the "Land of the Midnight Sun" (north of the Arctic Circle, where at certain times of the year the sun remains visible at the local midnight), your daily itinerary is flexible – go where the weather and movement of wildlife tell you to go, seeking Svalbard reindeer, polar bears, walruses, whales, Arctic foxes, red-throated divers, pink-footed geese, and more. Expedition naturalists accompany you throughout your voyage, enjoying a camaraderie that only Arctic explorers can share... as close as you can get to the North Pole!

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

luxury cruise to norway

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

If your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

The following cruise lines provide upscale amenities, immersive excursions, sophisticated dining options, lively nighttime entertainment and time for relaxation among like-minded – and similarly aged – travelers.

Travelers ages 18 and older are welcome aboard Viking 's adults-only ships, which feature destination-focused itineraries around the world. The line's 11 oceangoing ships carry between 930 and 998 guests (at double occupancy) and offer luxurious, comfortable Scandinavian-style spaces. The line will add Viking Vesta to its ocean fleet in 2025.

Viking's exploration program boasts special access to behind-the-scenes experiences curated for travelers who are interested in history, food, the arts or science. Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a traditional family farm near Bergen, Norway, or spend an evening dining on Chinese specialties at a home-hosted dinner in Shanghai .

In addition to these off-the-beaten-path excursions, guests can visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (Kuşadasi) in Turkey and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece . Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

In addition to its ocean vessels, Viking offers river cruises in destinations around the world – including Mississippi River cruises aboard Viking Mississippi. The line also has two Polar Class 6 expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which traverse waterways from Canada, the U.S. and South America to remote destinations in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and the line's submersibles for underwater exploration.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including French fine dining at Lumière; innovative Asian flavors at Koko's Asian Fusion; Italian, steak and seafood specialties at Elements; or an immersive dining experience at Chef's Garden @ Epicure. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample craft cocktails or the impressive selection of whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Other onboard activities include getting an invigorating treatment at Senses Spa or just relaxing with Champagne and spectacular views on deck 10 at the Sky Bar.

Scenic's ships sail to destinations in Australia and the South Pacific; Europe and the Mediterranean; Asia; the Americas and the Caribbean; and the polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic.

You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners, a partnership with Caymus Vineyards. Frequently Asked Questions

"Adults-only cruise ships – or adults-only spaces on cruise ships – have become increasingly popular over the years," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic. "That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults with children are more than just their kids, after all – and they also appreciate a space where they don't have to worry about their little ones."

Anne Scully, a partner at the luxury travel company EMBARK Beyond, says, "With so many cruise lines and sailings, it's always a good idea to have options – and adults-only cruises are very popular." She adds, "Viking and Virgin have always focused on adults-only cruises and most river cruises also cater to adult passengers."

Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.

Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Norwegian Cruise Line to launch a nude cruise for 2025 – and these are the rules for passengers

A specialist tour and travel company has partnered with Norwegian Cruise Line to launch a new nudist cruise to the Caribbean .

Bare Necessities, a nudist travel company that aims to “break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option”, has teamed up with the well-known cruise operator to set up the 11-day trip, which leaves from Miami and takes in destinations including The Bahamas , St Lucia, Dominica and Puerto Rico.

The cruise, which will take place on Norwegian’s 295-foot 2,300-person capacity Norwegian Pearl , will set sail on 3 February 2025 and return on 14 February.

Prices start at $2,000 (£1,592) per person for a standard two-person cabin, rising to $33,155 (£26,400) for a three-person ‘garden villa’.

The trip is marketed as “an 11-Day adventure back to Bare-adise”, offering “a wide range of amenities to fit everyone’s style of bare cruising”. The Norwegian Pearl contains “loads of entertainment, lots of open deck space, and multiple dining options”, including 14 restaurants, 14 bars and “a large buffet area for nude outdoor dining”, in addition to a casino, spa and several “nightspots”.

“As always, it’s our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear”, reads a final message on the information page.

However, it isn’t an entirely clothing-free experience. Cruise rules require passengers to be clothed during the Captain’s reception and introduction, while docked in port, and at all times in the main and specialty dining rooms.

Other rules include putting a towel down before sitting “in the stateroom, pool deck, and buffet area”, as well as a ban on “being nude in front of other ships in port” and “fondling or inappropriate touching”. A message on the site urges passengers to “use common sense”, emphasising that proper cruise etiquette “is not any different from proper etiquette in any other social situation”.

In a statement to CNN , a Bare Necessities spokesperson said: “Our mission is to provide relaxing, entertaining and health-conscious vacation opportunities that offer non-threatening, natural environments where the appreciation, wonder and compatibility of nature and the unadorned human form can occur.”

The Independent has contacted Bare Necessities for comment.

Norwegian cruise mogul’s success secrets: Focus on the wealthy and absolutely no kids allowed

Viking cruise at the French Mediterannean port of Marseille.

Torstein Hagen founded his cruise line with a few simple principles in mind. Among them: focus on the wealthy and intellectually curious; no nickel-and-diming; and no kids.

Almost three decades on, his Viking Holdings Ltd. is among the world’s biggest luxury cruise operators, and Hagen’s fortune will surpass $5 billion as the company completes its initial public offering in New York.

Viking  raised  $1.54 billion from the oversubscribed share sale, showing that investors are willing to pour money into a sector that was decimated by the Covid pandemic and now is rebounding.

The shares  priced near the top  of the marketed range, according to a  regulatory filing , valuing the company at around $10.4 billion. Hagen controls roughly half of the shares, making him the second-richest person in the industry after Carnival Corp. Chairman Micky Arison, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The listing also marks the pinnacle of an endeavor that, in Hagen’s  words , began with “two guys with two mobile phones and four river ships” seeking to woo customers who sought “more than just a vacation.” As the 81-year-old chief executive officer has often told journalists: Viking cruises are for the thinking person, not the drinking person.

Viking representatives didn’t respond to requests for comment on Bloomberg’s calculation of Hagen’s fortune.

Physics Degree

Born near Oslo, Hagen earned a degree in physics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard University. After a stint in management consulting, he entered the cruise industry in the 1970s. Around two decades later, following multiple failed attempts to help buy or otherwise take control over cruise lines with different investor groups, Hagen led the purchase of the four river ships and formed Viking.

The company initially focused on cruises along rivers up and down Europe before expanding into ocean travel and special expeditions to places like Antarctica and the US Great Lakes. Based in Bermuda, Viking today operates 92 vessels and employs more than 10,000 people.

Its target customers: affluent English speakers aged 55 or older, with time and money to explore the world. Last year, 90% of its clients came from North America, according to the company’s registration statement. In the US, the 55-plus cohort holds around three-quarters of the country’s household wealth, Federal Reserve  data  show.

In recent years, Viking has sold stakes to the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and alternative-asset manager TPG Inc. Both offloaded more shares in the offering than initially anticipated, according to a  filing .

Read More: TPG, CPPIB Are Said to Weigh Offering More Shares in Viking IPO

Hagen didn’t sell stock. His daughter, Karine, who has been working for Viking since it was founded and is now executive vice president, will control a small stake of less than 1%.

Viking said proceeds from the offering will be used to “increase our capitalization and financial flexibility” given its “substantial indebtedness.” It had $5.4 billion of debt at the end of 2023.

In a letter to shareholders included in the registration statement, Hagen noted the company sees big growth potential among consumers in China and elsewhere around Asia. That would go beyond “China Outbound,” the cruise offering in Europe with full crews of Mandarin speakers that Viking launched in 2016. The firm is also exploring safaris and land tours.

“We view Viking as the premier provider of travel experiences for thinking people,” the billionaire wrote in the letter. “We do not try to be all things to all people.”
