HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M1

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M1 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M1 will be reinstated shortly.

If the images are not updating, please check back later.

M62 LIVE traffic updates: 'Severe delays' as stretch of motorway fully shut after man falls from bridge

Emergency services are dealing with an incident on the motorway

  • Updated 14:14, 4 JUL 2024

Huge queues of traffic on the M62 this morning

A stretch of the M62 was closed this morning after a man fell from a bridge over the motorway.

The motorway was initially closed off in both directions on a stretch in West Yorkshire. The closure was in place between junction 29 for the Lofthouse Interchange and junction 30 for Rothwell.

The westbound side has since been reopened, though the eastbound side remains shut due to the incident. Diversion routes are in place.

According to traffic alert service Inrix, there are 'severe delays' up to the closure. Motorway cameras show huge queues of traffic.

National Highways said: "The M62 in West Yorkshire is closed in both directions between J29 (Lofthouse Interchange / M1) and J30 (Rothwell) due to a Police led incident. Emergency services including West Yorkshire Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management."

A further post on X added: "The #M62 eastbound remains closed between J29 (#M1) and J30 (#Rothwell) due to the ongoing @WestYorksPoliceincident.

"The westbound carriageway has now fully reopened. Traffic caught in the eastbound closure is in the process of being turned around from the rear of the queue."

In a statement, a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "At 9.35am today (Thursday), police received a concern for safety report relating to a male on a bridge over the M62 motorway between junctions 29 and 30. A further call was then received to advise the male had fallen on to the carriageway.

"The ambulance service was contacted and armed officers were deployed to assist at the scene in a medical capacity. The male was taken to hospital for further treatment. His injuries are described as life threatening.

"Enquiries have been ongoing at the scene. Anyone who saw what happened or has information is asked to contact Leeds District CID on 101 referencing police log 0405 of July 4.

M1 Concourse in Metro Detroit announces 2024 lineup of events

By Alysia Burgio

June 24, 2024 / 5:35 PM EDT / CBS Detroit

PONTIAC, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – If you're a car enthusiast, the M1 Concourse in Pontiac is gearing up for a jam-packed season.

"Our two big festival events of the year are the Woodward Dream Show which happens the third weekend in August during dream cruise week…and then our American Speed Festival," said CEO Tim McGrane.

McGrane says part of the Woodward Dream Show will include celebrating 60 years of the 1964 Pontiac GTO and adding a new show on Wednesday, Aug. 14, called Corvettes on Woodward.

m1-web-2.png

"There has been an event that's happened for many years called Corvettes on Woodward which has happened at one of the hotels further down Woodward. And that event is now moving up here on a Wednesday. Corvettes on Woodward will happen at M1 Concourse. We very much want to make sure that this end of Woodward and the city of Pontiac and M1 Concourse becomes its own part of the Woodward experience," McGrane said.

The city of Pontiac formally declared Friday, Aug. 16, Pontiac GTO day to mark the classic vehicle's 60th anniversary.

McGrane says professional NASCAR driver Richard Petty will be named the Master of Motorsports this year at the American Speed Festival, which takes place Oct. 3 through Oct. 6.

These are just a few of the many exciting highlights happening at M1 for car lovers to enjoy.

"That's what this facility is all about. A lot of the time, people will drive past here, and they'll see we're not open to everybody all the time, so it's very important to us that these events are open to the public events," said McGrane.

Visit M1 Concourse's website  to purchase tickets or learn more about the events held there this year.

Kids ages 6 and under are admitted for free, while discounted tickets are available for seniors, active-duty, and retired military personnel.

Sri Lanka recovers after economic crisis, but is it safe to travel there?

A man and a woman walk along a yellow sand beach and colourful umbrellas dot the shore.

White sand beaches, welcoming locals, wild elephants living in their natural habitats and eight UNESCO World Heritage sites make Sri Lanka a tourist's paradise.

But as Australian Greta Barlow was planning her trip, she wondered if it would be safe.

While her friends gave positive reviews of their past holidays in Sri Lanka, Australia's official Smart Traveller advisory urged visitors to "exercise a high degree of caution" as the country holds its presidential elections later this year.

"It made it sound like protests could happen anytime as well as possible curfews or terrorist attacks," she said.

Dozens of grey elephants walk on verdant grass near a blue lake.

Sri Lanka has been rocked by a series of crises in the past two decades, including economic turmoil in 2022 that led to oil, food and power shortages, the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, and the devastating 2004 tsunami.

The country was also engulfed in a 26-year civil war that ended in 2009 between the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Sinhalese-dominant Sri Lankan government.

Despite this tumultuous history, Priantha Fernando, chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, said tourists shouldn't be deterred from visiting.

"A couple of years ago it is understandable that foreign governments issued strong warnings," he told the ABC.

"But now, that advice needs to be updated as it is hurting the industry."

Mr Fernando said overly cautious travel advisories harmed those dependent on the industry for an income and the benefits that filtered down to communities.

The decline in tourism numbers since the pandemic dealt a severe economic blow to Sri Lanka, which relies heavily on tourism for foreign exchange.

Today, Sri Lanka is recovering.

About 209,200 tourists visited Sri Lanka in March this year, a 66 per cent increase compared to March 2023, according to the Sri Lankan Tourism Authority.

Tour agencies also stress that the political and economic unrest have stabilised.

"It is perfectly safe for solo women travellers, and street harassment is rare," said Vinoli Fernando, operations manager at Grasshopper Adventures.

"Just take the same precautions as in other countries."

Women look at orange, red and yellow frescoes of ancient drawn figurines on a rock.

Are all areas safe to visit?

However, many potential tourists like Ms Barlow remain hesitant about travelling by themselves and potential unrest.

The Smart Traveller advisory also warned solo travellers about the risk of "crime, including sexual assault, harassment and robbery" as well as "marked and unmarked minefields and unexploded weapons in the Northern Province and parts of the Eastern Province".

Tens of thousands of landmines were laid during the civil war, according to The Halo Trust, the country's biggest de-mining organisation, but most of those and other types of explosives have since been cleared.

"Only about 24 square kilometres still needs to be cleared, but it has been marked and cordoned off," said Hugh Baker, The HALO Trust's program manager.

French tourist Anaïs Noizat had her own doubts about visiting Sri Lanka earlier this year, especially about visiting Jaffna in the Northern Province where her partner's family lives.

A woman stands in front of a temple and palm tree and colourful crowds.

"I didn't know if people truly want tourists to visit after past crises?" she questioned.

While Jaffna was once a violent war zone, today it is better known among tourists for being home to one of the country's most significant Hindu temples, Nallur Kandaswamy.

During Ms Noizat's travels, she observed the Hindu Thiruvila festival of the gods and documented the lively celebration on Instagram.

In her posts, the Hindu temple was a riot of colour, with devotees dressed in vibrant saris and men bare-chested as a sign of respect.

"It's mesmerising to join in and be immersed in this cultural event," she said, noting the importance of respecting local customs.

Ms Noizat fell in the love with the country, but she almost didn't go on the trip because of the country's recent turbulent history.

Two women in orange and blue saris ride bicycles, a green tuktuk follows.

Fifteen years on since the end of the war, locals invite tourists to explore their quieter way of life.

Ajantha Subramaniam, who owns a local guesthouse, offers spicy crab and seafood curries.

"It is a calmer way of life here; we are used to picking ourselves up and carrying on," she said.

Ms Subramaniam, who fled the area during the civil war, returned a few years ago to reconnect with her roots.

The Sinhalese people form the majority of the population, while the Tamil community makes up 11 per cent, mostly living in the northern and eastern provinces.

Ms Subramaniam highlighted what makes Jaffna an attractive destination.

"The beaches are less crowded; we have temples and hidden gems like the library, which is one of the oldest in Asia, home to historic Palmyra palm tree manuscripts," she said.

The Jaffna library, symbolising the region's quiet determination, was set ablaze in 1981 by an anti-Tamil mob, destroying about 97,000 rare books, but has recently been rebuilt.

"So much history was destroyed in the region, but the people love to share stories and meet new people," Ms Subramaniam said.

For Ms Noizat, the trip has been enlightening.

She enjoyed the rustic charm and warm hospitality – and is already eyeing a return trip with plans to go to more off-the-beaten-track destinations like Delft island.

"Jaffna is not known a lot on social media and because of its past I feel like it gets overlooked, but it was totally safe and very authentic," she added.

"Yes, the region is battle-scarred, but locals are resilient and treasure their traditions."

How to be a responsible tourist

Tourism in Sri Lanka is not without its challenges.

Overcrowding in popular national parks has led some companies to promote less-visited areas.

"We now offer tours to Wilpattu National Park or walking tours in Horton Plains to see sloths and nature," Ms Fernando from Grasshopper Adventures said.

An elephant walks in front of jeeps.

On her most recent trip to Sri Lanka, Australia-based French tourist Camille Rey opted to visit Wilpattu National Park rather than a more popular alternative.

"Overtourism in Yala Park on my last visit led me to do more research for this trip and I chose an area where they had set boundaries and limits on [the number of] people visiting the park at one time."

And she wasn’t disappointed, spotting two leopards and elephants.

A leopard walks across the road in front of a jeep and tourists take photos.

"Making sure people involved in the park really care for [the animals] and are well paid are important for me when choosing where to visit too," she added.

Yvonne Schofield from Sri Lanka Campaign, an organisation monitoring human rights, urges tourists to consider their broader impact on locals and urged them to be sensitive when asking about the civil war.

Ms Schofield points to a map highlighting tourism companies linked to individuals implicated in war crimes as a useful resource for travellers who want to spend their money responsibly.

She said tourists should also be mindful that locals are still struggling with daily challenges such as rising food costs.

Aims to get more women into tourism

With more tourists returning, there's hope that the industry will recover and reach global standards.

A new program aimed at increasing women's participation is one part of that push.

Women currently make up less than 10 per cent of the industry, according to the Sri Lankan Tourism Authority.

Poornaka Delpachitra, who heads the Sri Lanka branch of Australian-owned tourism company Intrepid, is passionate about increasing this number.

A young woman wearing a grey shirt and pants in front of colourful tuktuks.

"There's a growing trend of more female travellers coming to Sri Lanka, and they often want to travel with a female guide, whether for safety or hearing a female perspective on culture," he said.

Intrepid has partnered with an Australian government-funded program to offer scholarships to female guides and deliver information sessions for female business owners.

Uthphala Arunamalee, one of the few female guides in the country, said there was often a stigma towards female tour guides, with assumptions that they must be promiscuous if they are travelling with strangers.

"Encouraging more women into these jobs and across the tourism sector will break down discrimination against women," she said.

A woman pointing to vegetables in a market surrounded by a group of men and women.

"Money talks, we all know this, so if women can earn a steady income, that will show their family this is a reputable job."

As Sri Lanka rebuilds, guides like Ms Arunamalee hope to be able to share their knowledge with more people of a land that is both recovering and rich in heritage.

"Talking to well-travelled people [also] gives you a view of the world through their eyes," she said.

Hurricane Beryl churning toward Mexico with strong winds, heavy rain

Editor's note: This page reflects news on Hurricane Beryl from Thursday, July 4. For the latest news on Hurricane Beryl , please follow USA TODAY's live updates on the storm for Friday, July 5 .

Beryl maintained major hurricane strength Thursday as it whipped past the Cayman Islands and toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It left a path of destruction in Jamaica with damaging winds and heavy rainfall, with at least 11 dead across the region.

The center of Beryl is moving across the northwestern Caribbean Sea Thursday afternoon and is expected to bring "strong winds, dangerous storm surge and damaging waves" to the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula early Friday, according to a 2 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. Beryl was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane Thursday and had winds of 110 mph at about 135 miles west of Grand Cayman – the largest of the Cayman Islands.

Beryl is expected to dump up to half a foot of rain on the Cayman Islands Thursday and up to 10 inches in areas of the Yucatan Peninsula, which could lead to flash flooding.

Storm surge could raise water levels as much as 3 to 5 feet on the Yucatan's east coast and by as much as 1 to 3 feet above ground level along its west coast, bringing "large and destructive waves."

Weather officials warned Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening surf and rip currents along the coast of Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands. The currents could spread to the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America later Thursday and then to eastern Mexico and much of the U.S. Gulf Coast by late Friday.

As hurricane conditions died down in the Cayman Islands, winds are expected to reach tropical storm strength in the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, making it difficult to be outside amid dangerous conditions expected later in the day, the hurricane center said.

The hurricane center discontinued hurricane warnings for the Cayman Islands, but warnings remain in place for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel. A tropical storm watch is also in effect for a large portion of the coast of Belize.

Officials confirmed that at least nine people were killed in Grenada, Venezuela, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Reuters reported. Jamaica’s prime minister Andrew Holness told CNN Thursday that two deaths have been registered in the country due to Hurricane Beryl.

Developments:

∎ The death toll from Beryl rose to at least 11 on Thursday. But officials said deaths are expected to climb as communications come back online across islands that have been damaged by flooding and intense winds.

∎ Nerissa Gittens-McMillan, permanent secretary at St. Vincent and the Grenadines' agriculture ministry, warned of possible food shortages after 50% of plantain and banana crops were lost in the storm.

∎ Forecasters warned of strong rip currents along much of the Gulf Coast through the weekend. Surf conditions will likely become dangerous on the south coast of Texas.

∎  As Beryl approaches Mexico, the Tulum International Airport, officially known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport or Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum, will close from 2 p.m. Thursday until noon on Sunday, according to the airport's website.

Will Hurricane Beryl hit Texas?

Portions of South Texas are now  within the forecast cone of Hurricane Beryl , which meteorologists say could arrive in the state over the weekend or early Monday.

But forecasters remain unsure what Beryl will do and how strong it will be when it approaches the Gulf Coast after hitting Mexico: "High uncertainty remains with both the track and intensity of Beryl," the  National Weather Service said Wednesday.

"From Panama City, Florida to New Orleans, there is a low risk of direct impacts from Beryl, but from about Corpus Christi to Brownsville, Texas, the risk increases significantly due to the potential for Beryl to have more direct impacts," AccuWeather meteorologist Jonathan Porter said. "That southern portion of the Texas coast is the zone we have to really watch."

Coastal threats could begin this weekend, according to Weather.com : "Well ahead of Beryl, onshore winds could lead to increasing surf, rip currents and coastal flooding along parts of the Gulf Coast from eastern Mexico to Texas and western Louisiana beginning as soon as Saturday, and continuing until just after Beryl's final landfall." The rip current threat could extend further east along the northern Gulf Coast.

Brennan said Tuesday, "Folks in the Texas coast, as we go into the holiday weekend, you're going to want to make sure you check back on the forecast and make sure you're ready for any potential impact. If we were to see tropical storm conditions affect those areas in the far western Gulf of Mexico, it could be during the day Saturday."

Governor Greg Abbott has directed the state's emergency management agencies to prepare for hurricane response and recovery efforts. As Beryl's path shifted toward South Texas, officials in Corpus Christi and Brownsville began distributing sandbags to residents and the Port of Brownsville limited ship traffic .

"As Texans around the south coastal areas make holiday plans and visitors begin to travel for the holiday weekend, I urge them to take necessary safety precautions, remain weather aware, and have an emergency plan ready for themselves and their families," Abbott said in a statement .

Hurricane Beryl tracker: Storm's path toward Jamaica, the Cayman Islands

Hurricane Beryl threatens the Yucatan Peninsula

Beryl was forecast to weaken gradually over the next two days; however, it is still expected to be at or near hurricane intensity when it heads toward the Yucatan Peninsula by late Thursday.

A hurricane watch and tropical storm warning remained in effect for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula's coast. Mexico's government upgraded its tropical storm watch to a tropical storm warning from Progreso to Campeche, the hurricane center said.

The hurricane center warned that Beryl should make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula as early as Thursday night. In addition to heavy rain and wind, forecasters said dangerous storm surge flooding will threaten coastal areas.

"Widespread power outages and flash flooding are anticipated in the region," according to AccuWeather.

Jamaica faces 'catastrophic' impact of Hurricane Beryl

There were widespread power outages across Jamaica after Beryl brushed the island's southern coast on Wednesday. The hurricane thrashed Jamaica as a Category 4 storm, bringing destructive winds and rain.

Beryl pummeled communities as emergency workers evacuated people from flood-prone areas.

"It's terrible. Everything's gone. I'm in my house and scared," said Amoy Wellington, a 51-year-old cashier who lives in Top Hill, a rural farming community in southern St. Elizabeth Parish. "It's a disaster."

At least one person was killed in Jamaica's Hanover Parish after a tree fell on her home, according to Richard Thompson, acting director general at Jamaica's disaster agency. Nearly a thousand residents were in shelters by Wednesday evening, Thompson said.

Emergency crews had evacuated people from flood-prone areas and airports were closed after Holness, the country's prime minister, issued an islandwide curfew Wednesday.

“We’re concerned about widespread damage and potentially catastrophic impacts in Jamaica,” said Bernie Rayno, AccuWeather's chief on-air meteorologist. "Flooding may last days to even weeks. Widespread power outages are expected. Beryl will likely damage many homes and businesses and cause severe coastal inundation."

Some Caribbean islands report significant damages after Beryl

At least three islands report more than 90% of the homes and buildings either destroyed or severely damaged, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency  reported Wednesday . All three are within the chain of Grenadine Islands, where Beryl roared into the Caribbean on the southern end of the Windwards, between St. Vincent and Grenada.

With  19 participating states across the Caribbean , the agency was helping coordinate disaster response in Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines even as it continued to track Beryl’s movements across Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Belize.

The damage estimates for the Windwards – where Beryl made landfall over the island of Carriacou – are only "a very preliminary look," said Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director. Beryl struck the islands with sustained winds of 150 mph and higher gusts on Monday, and the National Hurricane Center had warned that winds could be up to 30% higher on the tops of hills and mountains.

The impacts on the Grenadine Islands are "quite significant," Riley said, leaving residents exposed and vulnerable. Even as recovery efforts began, a tropical wave brought rain and gusty winds Wednesday to the suffering residents.
