An explosion in the order at the top, but the Slovenian stays in yellow

Stage 11 offered a much-anticipated explosion in the general classification at the Tour de France , with the 211km and 4,350m of climbing stretching the GC contenders to their limit.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) retained the yellow jersey but showed a hint of vulnerability as he was beaten to stage victory by returning champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).

Vingegaard’s spectacular bridge to Pogačar's early attack - and subsequent stage victory - wasn’t enough to move him into the yellow jersey, or indeed into second place. His gap to the Slovenian shrunk by a solitary second from 1:15 to 1:14, as his 15-second time bonuses were matched by 14 seconds of bonuses for Pogacar across the stage.

However, Vingegaard’s margin to Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quickstep) in second place shrunk from 42 seconds to 8 seconds.

Evenepoel finished the stage in third position, 25 seconds down on Vingegaard and Pogacar. He remains in second overall at a gap of 1:06 to Pogačar.

Behind them, an unfortunate late-stage crash for Primozž Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) nearly cost him dearly, as he lost touch with Evenpoel in a chase group and finished the stage 55 seconds down on the Danish stage winner.

However, the crash occurred in the final 3km, where the Tour de France's '3km rule' applied . As such, he was given the same finish time as Evenepoel – with whom he was riding at the time of the crash - on a 25-second gap. He remains in fourth position at a margin of 2:15 to the overall race lead.

Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) jumped from sixth to fifth place at a gap of 4:20, overtaking teammate Juan Ayuso who finished 15th on stage 11. Ayuso fell to ninth position, at a gap of 7:09. UAE Team Emirates still has four riders in the top 10, despite Ayuso’s drop.

Moving ahead of Ayuso and up one position are Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos-Grenadiers), Mikel Landa (Soudal Quickstep) and Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates). Having all finished in close succession at 1:49 down on the stage winner, they now sit at gaps of 4:40, 5:38 and 6:59 respectively.

Behind Ayuso, and rounding off the top 10 with an impressive climbing performance is Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) at a margin of 7:36.

With a wide spread of 7:36 in the top 10 only halfway through the Tour de France, the GC battle is well and truly taking shape, and we can be assured that the dynamics of the yellow jersey and podium race are now well in place. The next major test in the GC will come on stage 14 from Pau to the Pla d'Adet ski resort in the Pyrenees.

Tour de France 2024 classifications

Here's a rundown of all the ongoing competitions at the Tour de France.  Click here for a more comprehensive explainer , including minor competitions such as the intermediate sprints prize and the fighting spirit prize. Speaking of prizes,  click here to find out how much the riders can win during the Tour de France .

Yellow Jersey/Maillot Jaune  – The yellow jersey is worn by the overall race leader on the general classification who has completed the stages so far in the lowest accumulated time.

Green Jersey  – The green jersey is the points classification. Riders accrue points at one of the two intermediate sprints during stages and also at stage finishes, and the man with the most points leads the ranking.

Polka Dot Jersey  – The red and white polka dot jersey is the mountain classification. Points are handed out to the first riders over certain hills and climbs during the Tour de France, with the hardest mountains giving the most points. Once again, the man with the most points leads the ranking.

White jersey  – The white jersey is the best young rider classification. It works the same way as the yellow jersey, but only riders aged 25 or under are eligible to win.

The North Americans Racing the 2024 Tour de France

There’s no Sepp Kuss, but that doesn’t mean that riders from the U.S. and Canada won’t make a big impact at this year’s Tour.

cycling ronde van vlaanderen race men

Unfortunately for American fans at this year’s Tour, there will be no Sepp Kuss . Still battling the effects of COVID-19, Kuss, who won the 2023 Vuelta a España, was taken off Visma-Lease a Bike’s roster for the Tour de France.

Here’s a look at the North Americans competing in the 2024 Tour de France:

Guillaume Boivin (Israel-Premier Tech)

Premier Tech is a Canadian company, so it’s nice to see the team staying true to its identity by bringing three Canadians to the 2024 Tour de France. Boivin will be starting his fourth Tour in a row this year, and while he’s never recorded a high stage finish of his own, the 35-year-old is the exactly kind of selfless, strong, and experienced support rider a team needs while hunting for stage wins. If Israel-Premier Tech leaves the Tour with a stage victory (or two), expect Boivin to have played a role in making it happen.

Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech)

topshot cycling fra dauphine

Gee exploded onto the scene in last year’s Giro d’Italia, where the Canadian scored six top-5 stage finishes including second-places finished on four stages in the Italian grand tour. It was only his first grand tour, but the then-25-year-old’s career also finished second overall in the Giro’s Points and King of the Mountains Classifications.

All those second-place finishes seem to have inspired the Canadian heading into 2024: he took the first WorldTour victory of his career by winning Stage 3 at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné–then hung around the top of the General Classification to finish third overall. But don’t expect him to shoot for a high GC finish at the Tour de France; he’s hunting for the stage victories that eluded him in last year’s Giro. And given the way he’s been riding, we won’t be surprised if he wins more than one.

Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech)

Houle has started and finished every edition of the Tour de France since 2019. At first he was purely a domestique, riding on behalf of his GC captains at Astana. But then he moved (along with Premier Tech, who formerly sponsored Astana) to Israel-Premier Tech and was offered more opportunities to ride for himself.

Well, he took full advantage in 2022, when he scored a breakaway stage win (in the Pyrenees, no less) on Stage 16–just a few days after finishing third on Stage 13. The 33-year-old will get more chances this year, and his experience will prove invaluable to guys like Gee, who’s riding his first Tour de France and looks to be the cornerstone of the team’s opportunistic plans.

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike)

cycling fra dauphine

Even though he’s only 24-years-old, Jorgenson will be starting his third Tour de France this year, and his first since transferring from Movistar to Visma-Lease a Bike during the off-season. The kid from Idaho impressed everyone during his first two Tours, racing aggressively in pursuit of stage wins, coming close to winning a stage on multiple occasions.

But he’s reached new heights with Visma. First, he won Paris-Nice in early-March, defeating riders like Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel to take the biggest win of his still-young career. A few weeks later he won Dwars door Vlaanderen, a cobbled semi-Classic in Belgium. But his biggest breakthrough came at the Critérium du Dauphiné in early-June, where he raced like a Tour de France contender, riding consistently throughout the entirety of the 8-day stage race and almost stealing the overall victory from Roglič on the final stage.

He’s heading to the Tour in support of Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard. But if Vingegaard proves to be less competitive than the team hopes, Jorgenson could be given a chance to ride for himself–whether that means shooting for a high GC finish or a stage win we don’t exactly know. No matter what, Jorgenson is the most exciting rider American fans have had to root for in a while, someone who looks to have the makings of a future Tour de France champion.

Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost)

Quinn turned 24 in early-May and the American celebrated by winning the national road race championships in Charlestown, West Virginia nine days later. He then took his new stars-and-stripes jersey to the Critérium du Dauphiné, where he raced well enough throughout the week to have probably earned himself a spot on EF’s roster for the Tour de France.

This will be only the second grand tour of the American’s career, but we don’t expect the event to be too big for him. If he makes his team’s roster, expect to see him feature in a few breakaways, possibly as one of the riders looking to take an early lead in the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition during the Tour’s hilly opening weekend.

Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost)

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 3

Powless will be starting his fifth Tour de France on Saturday, and he’s raced all of them with EF Education-EasyPost. The 27-year-old’s best Tour finish was twelfth overall in 2021, and last year he spent twelve days in the polka dot jersey as the leader of the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition.

This year we’d love to see Powless commit to winning a stage, which means not worrying about the GC standings or wasting energy chasing KOM points early in the Tour. He needs to sit down with the race bible, identify three or four stages that suit him the best, and then make those stages the focus of his entire Tour de France, essentially racing them like a series of one-day races–with long, hard training rides in between. With that kind of approach, he’s a good bet to take EF Education’s first Tour de France stage victory since 2022.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Tour de France Stage 4 recap, results, standings: Tadej Pogačar dominates mountains

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar reclaimed the yellow jersey from Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz in dominant fashion on Tuesday, winning Stage 4 of the 2024 Tour de France and establishing himself as the undeniable early favorite to win the 111th edition of the race .

The first mountainous stage of the competition, Stage 4 included an elevation gain of over 11,000 feet through the Alps as cyclists rode 86.7 miles from Pinerolo, Italy, to Valloire, France.  Pogačar’s Team UAE Emirates seized control of the breakaway group as it approached the final summit, and approximately 800 meters from the top, Pogačar made his move. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard made a valiant effort to go with Pogačar but ultimately came up 8 seconds short at the summit of the Col du Galibier.

On the final descent before the finish line, Pogačar sealed his victory as he continued to gain ground on Vingegaard, who was eventually caught by Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) in the final meters of the race.

After his win, Pogačar said that he executed his race plan well.

“This was more or less the plan,” Pogačar said . “It was like a dream stage and I finished it off solo, it's incredible ...I wanted to hit hard today.”

With two Tour de France general classification titles in 2020 and 2021 already under his belt, this victory marked Pogačar’s 12th career Tour de France stage win.  If Tuesday can serve as any indication of how the remainder of the 21 stages will play out, Pogačar seems poised to reclaim the Tour de France crown from Vingegaard, who won the Tour in 2022 and 2023. Vingegaard appears to still be working his way back to full form and confidence on descents after a crash in April hospitalized him for 12 days.

Here's a full look at the 2024 Tour de France standings after four days of competition.

Tour de France

The Tour de France represents the pinnacle of the UCI WorldTour and is the race every rider dreams of winning. Yet only a few have the all-round talent and support of a team strong enough to compete in the mountains, the time trials and then handle the crashes and unexpected scenarios that three weeks of intense racing invariably includes.

Le Tour or the Grand Boucle (the big loop), as the race is affectionately known in France, is built on legend. It was first held in 1903 after being created by the struggling L'Auto newspaper to sell more copies. The drama of the early editions, when stages started in the dark and lasted hundreds of kilometres, captured the imagination of the French public, with sales of l'Auto rising year on year until they forced their rivals out of business.

The first organiser Henri Desgrange and early race director Géo Lefèvre pushed the limits of the riders year after year. The first edition consisted of six stages from Paris to Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and then Nantes before returning to the capital. Soon after there was 11 stages and Desgrange and Lefèvre introduced mountain stages in the Alps and Pyrénées, when the roads over the Col du Galibier and the Col du Tourmalet were little more than farm tracks. The Col du Galibier was introduced as early as 1911, with only three riders reaching the top without getting off to walk. Other innovations included the introduction of a team time trial stage, with riders competing for national teams for many years until 1962.

Like every stage race, the Tour de France is a race within a race. The overall winner dons the final yellow jersey. However riders also fight for the daily stage victories, intermediate sprints for the green points jersey and the mountain points for the stand-out red polka-dot climber's jersey. A special white jersey is also awarded to the best rider aged under 25 while the last placed rider overall is known as the winner of the lanterne rouge, the light that brings up the rear of the peloton.

Following the introduction of live television coverage and global interest in the Tour de France, the event grew enormously. It is now considered the largest annual sporting event in the world and millions of people watch every stage via television, the Internet and from the roadside. A single victory is enough to consecrate the career of any rider and only four riders have gone on to win the Tour de France five times: Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain.

The Tour de France highlights the beauty of France in the summer and in recent years it has become a successful way to promote other parts of Europe, with stage visits and the so-called Grand Depart now often touching countries neighbouring France. In 2014 the race started in Yorkshire in Britain, drawing a reported crowd of four million people to the roadside for the opening three stages.

The 2015 Tour de France will start in the town of Utrecht, in the Netherlands, on Saturday July 4, before the riders return to France via Belgium to write yet another page in the history of the biggest race in professional cycling.

Jonas Vingegaard jubelt, Tadej Pogačar rechts daneben

GREATEST ROAD SPRINTERS – #2: MARIO CIPOLLINI

At over 6-foot-2 and 174 pounds, cipollini was one of the most powerful sprinters the sport has seen and was almost unstoppable when his famous red train (in his seven years with team saeco) unleashed him on the finishing straightaway of stages at the grand tours..

This image of Mario Cipollini winning the opening road stage of the 1993 Tour de France ahead of two other redoubtable sprinters—Wilfried Nelissen (blue jersey) and Laurent Jalabert (in pink)—sums up the incomparable style of the man they called the Lion King, Super Mario or, simply, Cippo. His arms are high in celebration of his first-ever Tour stage win, he’s wearing the giant shades he made popular and his white cotton racing cap is set at just the right angle.

Words: John Wilcockson | Image: Yuzuru Sunada

Cipollini is our No. 2 pick of the Greatest Road Sprinters of the past four decades. When the Belgian-based Velo annual put out a special edition in 2005 it summed up the Italian sprinter thus: “The absolute top sprinter of his generation.”

That characterization dimmed somewhat in the years after his retirement with a February 2013 front-page story in Gazzetta dello Sport claiming that Cipollini was involved in the Operación Puerto doping scandal and in July that year the French Senate, in a major enquiry into doping in  sport, named Cipollini among 18 riders whose retroactively tested urine samples from the 1998 Tour showed traces of EPO. The sprinter has remained silent on these allegations though, that like those of Erik Zabel, the Cipollini “positives” exceeded the World Anti-Doping Agency’s eight-year statute of limitations.

In a career that spanned two decades, Cipollini won 191 races, including a stunning record 42 stages of the Giro d’Italia (between 1989 and 2003), 12 stages of the Tour, three stages of the Vuelta a España, the 2002 world road championship, and classic victories at Milan–San Remo (2002), Ghent–Wevelgem (1992, ’93 and 2002), E3 Prijs (1993) and Scheldeprijs (1991 and ’93).

At over 6-foot-2 and 174 pounds, Cipollini was one of the most powerful sprinters the sport has seen and was almost unstoppable when his famous Red Train (in his seven years with Team Saeco) unleashed him on the finishing straightaway of stages at the grand tours. Cipollini was a showman, once showing up to the start of a Tour stage in a chariot like a Roman emperor wearing a toga and golden laurel-leaf crown; and he raced the prologue time trial at the 2002 Giro dressed in a full-body, tiger-striped skinsuit, riding a tiger-striped bike.

It’s sure that the sport will never again see the likes of Mario Cipollini.

The Tour de France sees the very best cyclists in the world battle it out for the yellow, green, white and polka dot jerseys, based on the general, points, mountains and young rider classifications.

The jersey for each category is awarded to the leader of that classification at the end of every stage, and the recipient earns the right to wear it during the following day's racing. When a rider has the lead in multiple classifications, the yellow jersey is prioritised, then green, the polka dot, and white - the next person on the ranking wears the kit in the leader's stead.

Here we take a brief look at what they are and how they are won.

Jonas Vingegaard time trials at the 2022 Tour de France

Tour de France yellow jersey - GC leader

Also called the maillot jaune , the Tour de France yellow jersey is the most coveted piece of kit in professional cycling. The wearer is the rider who has completed the race in the least amount of time, and as such tops the overall or general classification (GC) of the race.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) dominated the GC in 2020 and 2021, wearing the yellow jersey almost throughout the 2021 edition, before Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) took it off him halfway through the 2022 race, wearing it until the end of the race. He went on to win it again in 2023.

Before that, in 2012, Bradley Wiggins became the first British rider to finish in Paris in the Yellow Jersey - with Chris Froome following up in 2013, 2015-2017. Geraint Thomas took the 2018 race, becoming the third British rider to win the race.

The yellow jersey is sponsored by LCL, a French bank, and it is yellow, because the Tour's original organiser, L'Auto , was a newspaper printed on yellow paper.

A time bonus of 10, six and four seconds will be awarded to the first three riders across the finish line each day (not including TTs). These bonus seconds are taken off their stage and therefore overall time. Bonus seconds of eight, five and two seconds are also awarded on certain, strategically placed climbs on stages one, two, five, 12, 14 and 17.

Tour de France green jersey - points classification

Wout van Aert at the 2022 Tour de France

The green jersey relates to points awarded to riders according to the position they finish on each stage, with additional points for intermediate sprints during some stages also on offer.

The number of points on offer will vary depending upon the type of stage. More are on offer during pure flat, sprint days, while on hilly and mountain stages there are fewer points available. The points are then tallied up after each stage and added to points won in all previous stages. The green jersey ( maillot vert) is awarded to the rider with the most points. Sometimes it is a sprinter's game, sometimes more of an all-rounder - like Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma).

The jersey took its colour because the initial sponsor was a lawn mower manufacturer - though the colour was changed once in 1968 to accommodate a sponsor. It is now sponsored by Škoda, and has a new shade for this year .

Both Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault successfully won both the general classification and the points classification with Merckx achieving the biggest sweep in 1969 with the points, mountain and general classifications to his name. Over the last ten years, Peter Sagan has triumphed in the points classification on no less than seven occasions.

The following points are on offer:

Flat stage (stages 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16): 50, 30, 20 points (descending to 15th place)

Hilly stage (stages 1, 11, 17, 18): 30, 25, 22 points (descending to 15th place)

Mountain stage and ITTs (4, 7, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21): 20, 17, 15, (descending to 15th place)

Intermediate sprint: 20, 17, 15, (descending to 15th place)

Tour de France jerseys: Polka dot - King of the Mountains classification leader

Tour de france polka dot jersey - mountains classification.

Simon Geschke in the polka dot jersey at the 2022 Tour de France

Mountains points are awarded to riders who manage to summit classified climbs first. Points vary depending on the category of each ascent, with more difficult climbs awarding more mountains points.

Climbs are divided into five categories: 1 (most difficult) to 4 (least difficult) - then there's the ' Hors Categorie ', denoted by HC which represents the most challenging of ascents. The tougher the category, the more points on offer, and to more riders - a HC climb will see points awarded down to the first eight over the summit, while a fourth category climb results in points for just the first rider over the top.

The organisers decide which mountains or climbs will be included in the competition, and which category they fall into. If the stage features a summit finish, the points for the climb are doubled.

The points are tallied up after each stage and added to points won in all previous stages. The distinctive white-with-red-dots jersey ( maillot à pois rouges ) is given to the rider with the most mountains points. The first climber's award was given out in 1933, and the jersey arrived on the scene in 1975. It is now sponsored by Leclerc, a supermarket.

Points awarded as follows:

HC: 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2pts

1st cat: 10, 8, 6, 7, 5, 1pt

2nd cat: Five, three, two.

3rd cat: Two and one points

4th cat: One point

The souvenir Henri Desgrange is awarded to the first rider over the race’s highest point, the Cime de la Bonnette, with a bonus of  40, 30, 24, 20, 16, 12, 8, 4 points, on stage 19.

Last 10 winners of the Tour de France mountains classification:

  • 2014:  Rafał Majka
  • 2015:  Chris Froome
  • 2016: Rafał Majka
  • 2017: Warren Barguil
  • 2018: Julian Alaphilippe

Tour de France white jersey - best young rider

Tadej Pogacar Tour de France

The plain white, young rider classification jersey is awarded to the fastest rider born after 1 January 1998, meaning 25 or under. It is sponsored by Krys, an opticians

First introduced in 1975, riders such as Marco Pantani, Alberto Contador, Egan Bernal and Tadej Pogačar have all won the young rider classification, helping propel them onto bigger and better things during their careers.

Pogačar has been dominant in the white jersey competition in recent years, but this is the first year he is not eligible.

Last 10 winners of the Tour de France young rider classification:

  • 2014:  Thibaut Pinot
  • 2015: Nairo Quintana
  • 2016:  Adam Yates
  • 2017: Simon Yates
  • 2018: Pierre Latour
  • 2022: Tadej Pogačar
  • 2023: Tadej Pogačar

Other Tour de France classifications - team and combativity

There are two further classifications that do not earn the winner(s) a coloured jersey - the most aggressive rider award and Team Classification .

While not necessarily a classification, the Combativity Award is given to the rider who has shown the most fighting spirit during each individual stage, as chosen by the race jury. They will wear a gold race number during the following day's stage. A 'Super Combativity' award is handed out on the final stage for the most aggressive rider during the whole race.

The Team Classification is based on the collective time of the three highest-placed riders from each squad. Leaders of the team classification get to wear race numbers that are yellow with black digits, and the right to wear yellow helmets. The latter is not compulsory.

LES 45 TOURS DE FRANCE Genevive Nranval, Jean-J Thbault, Andr Tavernier /Disque-Jeu Philips, France, late 1950s

45 tours de france

This game  consists of a 45 rpm record with the instructions of the game. Side A  contains a flat stage and side B contains a mountain stage. The rules are quite absurd (or maybe I am too old for them): The players throw the die and pass it to the next player frantically while the record plays. Every once in a while the music stops and some instructions are given to the players like "There is a crash. Although nobody is hurt, some riders are delayed. Everybody on a green square goes back three squares" or "A small bunch tries to escape. All the riders who are beyond square 8 advance two squares". You get the feeling.

45 tours de france

There are even advanced rules. You can play a team competition, and a full Tour de France, playing the record many times, of course. I wonder what happens when everybody knows the record by heart and can anticipate exactly when each message will be heard. I guess the players will adjust the speed of the game to pass the die at the most convenient moment... provoking accusations of cheating, big trouble, and maybe a broken record player!

45 tours de france

Most copies of the game have lost the cardboard riders. If this is the case with yours, I have included a ready-to-print high resolution scan of mine HERE (also available from the " make your own cycling game " section of the site). Notice the multicoloured die. Fortunately, It can be replaced by a normal die if it is lost or damaged.

45 tours de france

With all its simplicity and its limitations, this charming game is one of my favourites. Of course, I am a record collector too, so this one appeals to two of my passions (check Velo-Flash to see another game that appeals to both).   CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE CONTENTS OF THE RECORD (ZIP FILE CONTAINING 2 MP3s, 13 Mb)
