Great trip, good hotels and guiding and lovely food!
Loved that I was able to see so much.

Europamundo

Europamundo

  • Good - 2,987 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
This was the first tour I took, actually I prefer taking cruises. But Euromundo surely was a very good tour. I enjoyed my tour from Vienna to London(14 days). Our Tour Manager Matheus/Matteo was incredibly amazing, professional very helpful, compasionate, funny and right on time. I totally enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend to my friends.
My tour guide and driver were really good, knowledgeable and helpful. I thought she did a really good job disseminating information in Spanish and English, as it was a bilingual tour, and had great advice on places to go, places in town to eat etc.... I also thought she did a phenomenal job dealing with some issues that I have described below. I liked the itinerary and stops on the route, however, I feel like one less stop and maybe more time in some of the areas would be beneficial. For example, the people who took the castle tour in Alnwick missed out and exploring a really cool town. I guess I felt like I ran out of time just when I was figuring out the interesting parts and the people of the area we were in. The cities we went were very interesting, however, I also would have like time to walk around in the Highlands to experience their beauty, not just drive through them and try to take pictures at speed out the window. The three items that really detracted from the trip were 1) The busses, in particular the seats, were to small for myself and son who are both over 6 feet tall. At times I was miserable and cramped, knees were wedged in the seat in front and could feel the metal support bar through the seat. It detracted from the trip and since the bus was full, when the person in front of you reclined I felt like I barely had space to check the time on my phone or get something out of my pocket. After some days of 6 plus hours like that, I found myself just wanting the day to be over and honestly my hips still hurt 2 days later 2) The hotels were nice, clean and in mostly in good areas to find dining and things you needed. However, one night we waited forever to get our rooms to find out 8 of us were booked in a different hotel across town, by the time we figured out the issue and were checked in most of the local restaurants were closed or closing. The next night in Dublin the hotel was not prepared for our arrival and it took well over an hour/hour and a half of chaos to get us all into our rooms. 3rd Arrival first day- Our transfer driver was pretty good but i had to call the helpline to find him because he wasn't standing with all the other drivers in the airport, had my name on his phone instead of a placard and he was at the opposite end of the terminal from where we thought we were supposed to meet him, so if he was using his phone for personal reasons when I was looking for my name how was I supposed to find him. At the hotel they were great taking our bags but the signage for the next's days itinerary was not out. The front desk said to check later at check in as the guide wasn't there yet, we did and then three extra times, until finally it was out. After flying all night, being jet lagged, not knowing anything about the town etc... It would have been nice for someone to greet us at the hotel in the lobby, give us an itinerary for the next day and not try to find a small piece of paper in a crowed hotel lobby, where the front desk didn't even know where it was. Maybe an arrival email with places to go in the area while you wait to check in and emailing or texting the breakfast and departure times for the first day would be helpful and help to avoid questions and anxiety. Overall I really liked the trip, with some better communication, more room on the bus and maybe some slight alteration of the agenda I would have rated it good to excellent. I would like to say again the guides were great, personable and helpful. It was a very nice experience overall.

  • Excellent - 869 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
The driver, Billy, and tour director, Speedy, made the trip very interesting and informative. They were both very helpful. We were disappointed that some of the hotel didn’t really cater for the older tourist with rooms a fair distance from reception, climbing stairs and dragging our luggage.
Our driver Eduardo is excellent, safe driving and helpful. He got us safely on where we are suppose to go. on the other hand, the travel director Debra Lane is somewhat inconsiderate, making this trip "stresscation" (stress in vacation) instead of vacation, I'm sure if the other participant get's the same survey they will put the same feedback because we are all have the same complain. There are instances that she could gotten us (we that did not get the optional experience in between) to the bus already but instead decided to leave us. We are not sure why but they are already at the end of that optional experience just a matter of getting to the bus up to pick up zone then hotel and we are already in there in the vicinity where they are loading the people who took the opt experience and yet we were left behind and was ask to go to the pick up zone, not making any sense. Also at France at the end of the trip we are on the bus 2 mins away from attraction when my wife realizes that she drop her phone, the nice person is already in the phone with us letting us know that he got it. We ask the director to wait for us to get it ( this is 2 mins. away and the bus is in the good spot to park but she declined and asked us to take the cab. There is also a couple of Australian that shares the same dilemma. You might want to get a deeper survey at this trip since we know we are not alone. Again the participants already know each other at this point so we know what we don't like about this trip. Also some of the hotels are filthy, some issues with keys, lights, ac and food arrangements. We all know this is cost saver but then again we paid almost 10K (including optional experience) to get to this vacation and we expect a little more respect and consideration in regards to this vacation. If you needed more survey you can refer to "London to Rome" trip covering April 12-21, 2024 under booking # A107414.

The Classic Europe tour with Expat was amazing. Everything was very convenient and well organised. Adam our tour guide and Florin our driver did wondeful jobs to make sure we saw and did everything on schedule and gave us special treats with some extra free times to enjoy the places where they could. We had such a great time with the tour itself and the people we met in the tour group were very lovely and we kept in touch. This tour sets such a high standard for our next trips! Definitely 5 stars service and we will definitely join Expat tour again in future.

Trafalgar

Well organized and well executed tour.
For those who want a complete insight to WWI and WWII and the battlefields, this is the tour for you. Just being where our soldiers fought brings so much clarity to the extent of battles they endured. Some days on the tour are long, but definitely worth it. Our tour director was excellent and went out of way to ensure we were managing. A bucket list item checked off.

Cosmos

  • Excellent - 19,644 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
Not really my type of holiday travel! The stops are short and mainly at freeway truck and rest stops. The hotels were way too far from any real sites and some were small and cramped. I expected this tour to be hectic, given the countries visited and the days involved, . but IMO it could have been organized a lot better. The Tour Director and Driver were excellent but working with hands tied behind her back. The driven tours by coach just went too fast apart from road blocks or traffic jams. I appreciate that the TD kept mentioning that there are other tours by Cosmos, Globes that are lconcentrated on longer stays, however if they are at the hotels that we stayed at, then seeing the good sights are going to be a massive struggle. IMHO, even if the costs are higher for better hotels and safer areas, most would rather pay than skimp. Most of the stops overnight did not even have any decent restaurants where one could experience a decent meal of the region. Yes there were a couple of organized option dinners that involved costs, but these had to be reached via the coach. The three included meals are at the hotels which really did not have kitchens other than ones that could prepare breakfasts and the meals were simple and buffet style with one fixed item being served. As I started it may be OK for some, but definitely not my cup for tea!
Wonderful! First time traveling outside of the US alone. It was a beautiful tour! Henry was amazing! He was full of knowledge and fun facts. The itinerary was awesome and well organized. So happy I went! I made life long friends sling the way! Recommend and will be using this tour again soon! Just book it! You’ll love it!

I recently had the pleasure of going on a tour guided by an exceptional guide. From start to finish, the tour was an absolute delight and exceeded all my expectations. One of the things that stood out to me was the variety of places we visited. The tour included a great balance of walking, hiking, and sightseeing, ensuring that we got to experience the best of each location. Additionally, the tour itinerary was well-planned, with sufficient rest time on the bus and well-timed stops that made each travel leg enjoyable and not too long. Speaking of the bus, it was spacious and comfortable, perfectly accommodating our group of 12 people. This allowed us to relax and enjoy the journey between destinations. Our guide, Neil, also took care to ensure our comfort by driving safely and steadily, making us feel secure throughout the trip. The guide's personality truly made the tour memorable. He was incredibly funny, positive, and interactive, always keeping the group engaged and entertained. His energy and outgoing nature were contagious, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the tour. I appreciated his caring nature, as he went above and beyond to make sure each passenger felt taken care of. Not only was the guide entertaining, but he was also knowledgeable about the history of the places we visited. He shared fascinating insights and personal experiences, which added a personal touch to the tour. I was impressed by his ability to provide clear instructions and answer any questions we had along the way. Another highlight of the tour was the guide's musical talents. He played and sang great music, enhancing the overall experience and creating a fantastic ambiance on the bus. Additionally, he introduced us to wonderful local restaurants and sightseeing places, ensuring that we had a well-rounded experience of the area. Overall, I cannot recommend this tour and guide enough. He truly made the experience unforgettable with his humor, knowledge, and dedication to ensuring our enjoyment throughout the journey. I would not hesitate to go on another tour with him in the future and encourage others to do the same.
Recently completed this tour and I cannot recommend this enough! Had a fantastic time and the tour guide, Nick, was hands down the best I have had in tours. It would we great if the company started doing a longer tour (7 - 10 Days) as 5 days in highlands was not nearly enough. Though overall, highly highly recommend!

The itenary was paced very well. It gave us the opportunity to see many sites without feeling overwhelming or rushed. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I appreciated that Anthony listened to the groups' interests, expectations, and limitations. He created a very comfortable group setting.
We enjoyed our trip very much even though the weather was challenging at times. Anthony was professional at all times and good fun to be with. The Irish Experience team gave us great support when our flight was cancelled. Lots of thanks to you all.

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel

  • Excellent - 11,702 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
Intrepid needs to tighten up this tour. Two free afternoons is too much when one has only three days on the island. Either make the tour two full days or two full days with one full day free to make plans to go to Hoy or Rousay. Give people guidance on what to do on the free day.
I recently traveled with a friend to Scotland. We included a week long tour with Intrepid, booked through Tour Radar. We paid a very healthy sum for the tour, $3,460 each. The description said the trip was appropriate for ages 15-99. It also described two nights in Portree on Isle of Skye with a private van tour on the full day on Isle of Sky. My friend and I chose this tour because of the time spent in Portree and on Isle of Skye, the small group size, and that if it was okay for ages 15-99 then I’d be fine six months post a major knee surgery. What wasn’t included in the description and what happened: -No where did it say that we’d be expected to walk/transport our luggage on foot from Points of transportation to our lodging ranging from 10-20 minutes. My 94 year old father-in-law lives with us and is able bodied, but there’s no way he could have done these distances While also carrying/pulling luggage. My 87 year old mother could not accomplish this either. I could do it with my recovering knee, but I was slower and it also used up some of the energy I needed for enjoying walking portions of the tour. I didn’t anticipate having to schlep my suitcase for 15 minutes at a time over uneven sidewalks, etc. I would have packed differently had I known or we would have looked for a different tour. -My friend and I still wonder why Fort Williams was included on the itinerary as a place to stay?
The only thing Intrepid provided was a walk to a castle that wasn’t open for visitors. The rest was on our own and there really wasn’t much happening other than a nice, little museum. We would have preferred more time on Isle of Skye. -We were notified prior to departure that our time on Isle of Skye would be at Kyleakin - not in Portree- and we’d have to arrange our own tour. Phone numbers were provided but no one on the tour had any luck booking anything prior to arriving, calls not returned, no availability, etc. So, 3-4 of our tour group spent 2 FULL hours or more on their phones while we were in Fort Williams trying to come up with some options for us. They pieced together a public bus ride to/from Kyleakin to Portree and a private taxi tour at our own expense! (After paying for it in the cost of our tour.) This should have been done by Intrepid!! Not once were we offered reimbursement. We didn’t have any time in Portree. We’d hoped to have lunch before our taxi tour, but all the restaurants were full. I found a to-go cup of tea and scone at a bike shop, then time in cue to use a bathroom. I’d looked forward to staying in Portree and had many places I had planned to walk to when not on the private van tour we were sold but didn’t get. Also, While staying in Kyleakin, the guest house did not provide a cooked breakfast, just light snacks in our rooms. Breakfast was provided, but we had to walk to/from the restaurant that was a mile each way. This used up time we could have been site seeing. Also, it would use up my knee energy for the days site-seeing. My friend went to breakfast but I skipped the walk to reserve my energy for site-seeing. Oh, and the whiskey tasting…we passed distilleries but we Were given a private lesson on tasting with our tour guide. While he did a fine job, the setting was not the same as a distillery setting. The room was bare, we used wine glasses, we were Supposed to take notes but no hard surfaces to write on, etc. Just wasn’t what any of us were expecting. I found Intrepid’s disregard for the changes and the misleading descriptions as to be very unprofessional. I use tours so that I don’t have to do all of the arranging. Why pay you if I’m going to have to do it myself? Next time I book a tour, I’ll be sure to avoid Intrepid. Many friends have asked about my trip. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the tour. I’ve shared that multiple times now. I’m not the only member of the group that walked away Disappointed. We didn’t want to “blame” the tour guide, I don’t think he was responsible, he was just trying to keep us happy as he could sense how displeased we were. His answers too our questions were not satisfying at all. He seemed to be trying to cover for the company best he could.

This tour was so good! We experienced more of Ireland than the itinerary indicated (because of stops we made along our journey, which I loved!), but never felt rushed. Our guide Diarmuid is such a professional - he provided us with interesting information about the places we stopped and Ireland in general, kept us on schedule with a relaxed demeanor, and is genuinely a very nice person. I've never traveled with a tour group before and this one couldn't have been any better. The Emerald Isle is so beautiful and everyone is so friendly that, even when there was a bit of rain, it was still fun. Many thanks to Mick and Diarmuid (the best!!) for making this a most memorable trip. PS the accommodations were fantastic - especially the breakfasts!
Incredible trip. Very well planned. Helpful and accommodations where spectacular. Don't worry about luggage!

Best holiday destinations

Yougov has published its list of top UK travel brands and holiday destinations for 2022, based on customer feedback.

The research company’s BrandIndex ranks travel companies and destinations according to customer perception.

For the brand ranking, consumers were asked which of a number of brands they had a positive impression of and which they had a negative impression of.

The same method was used to rank destinations, with both brands and destinations ranked according to their average score.

Which are the top UK travel brands?

Budget hotel chain Premier Inn came out as the top travel brand, with a score of 39.9, closely followed by British Airways, which scored 36.

Hilton, Emirates and Booking.com completed the top 5.

TUI was the only tour operator in the top 10 list, ranked in ninth position, just ahead of TripAdvisor.

  • Be friendly and approachable. Customers should feel comfortable interacting with your travel company customer service representatives. They should be treated with respect and courtesy.
  • Be flexible and accommodating. Things don't always go according to plan when you're traveling. Be flexible and accommodating when things go wrong. Try to find solutions that work for the customer, even if it means going above and beyond.

With UK travel restrictions relaxing at the start of October, international travel is easier and cheaper for people dreaming of that next trip abroad. While the road to recovery is long for the travel industry, the latest opening up is a big step for companies that have suffered 18+ months of uncertainty.

Vertical Leap look at UK travel trends and provide tips for marketers to implement into their advertising.

Vertical Leap looks at UK travel trends and provides tips for marketers to implement into their advertising

In this article, we look at five key trends for the UK travel industry heading into winter 2021 – and how companies can respond with their advertising.

Trend #1: the UK domestic travel boom continues

With the UK easing almost all Covid-19 restrictions by the end of June 2021, domestic travel was the surest way to guarantee a summer holiday without any last-minute disruption. According to several travel authorities, the so-called “staycation boom” is set to continue through the winter months and well into 2022, despite the easing of international travel restrictions.

How to respond: High demand and soaring prices force domestic travelers to book early, so companies in the UK should keep a heavy emphasis on domestic travel. Exploit some of the uncertainty around availability and prices to create a sense of urgency in your ads and encourage travelers to book now while emphasizing the fact that domestic travel remains the most reliable choice in the meantime.

Trend #2: international travel on the rise too

With the traffic light system being replaced in October 2021, travelers from the UK can book international trips with greater confidence. Airlines and other travel companies have reported a “sharp rise” in bookings this month, but they’re rising from a low base, so travel companies are competing for a relatively small market of international travelers.

How to respond: Announce the return of international travel in your ads, provide detailed information about the latest travel guidelines and reinforce paid ads with organic content to help people make informed booking decisions. Pay attention to travelers’ concerns and address them. Target long-tail keywords (eg “winter 2021 holiday flexible booking no quarantine”) if you’re struggling to rank/show for more competitive terms.

Trend #3: last-minute bookings

Earlier this year, travel group Jet2 said its customers were booking “significantly closer” to departure for summer holidays amid the ongoing uncertainty around travel lists and restrictions. Despite most restrictions being lifted for returning travelers, the UK is heading into winter with some of the highest infection rates in the world, and the bigger risk now is that other countries could place the UK on their travel lists.

With the government once again facing pressure to reintroduce Covid measures, the uncertainty isn’t over yet, and travelers could be forgiven for continuing to book trips at the last moment.

How to respond: Offer flexible booking and emphasize this in your ad messages. Provide clear information about your refund policy and use simple, easy-to-understand language so people feel confident they can book without worrying about any nasty surprises if things suddenly change.

Trend #4: demand is high – for some kind of getaway

Whether it’s domestic or international, the demand for getaways is high among UK travelers, and there’s a clear appetite for getting back to ‘normal’ for many in the country. We’re also heading into the least restrictive winter of the pandemic (subject to change, of course) and confidence is gradually increasing.

According to data compiled by VisitBritain , 80% of travelers asked in August 2021 would consider an international leisure trip in the next 12 months, with 50% saying they would “definitely” consider traveling.

Even if travelers don’t commit to making the booking this year, interest is growing and this presents opportunities for travel companies to capture leads and put their brand at the center of people’s minds.

How to respond: Address the urge of people to get away two years into the pandemic. Many people are desperate for a holiday with minimal disruption and the more ease/reassurance you can offer, the more tempting bookings become. Also, allocate some budget for brand awareness and lead generation campaigns for travelers who aren’t ready to commit now.

Trend #5: competition is rising

Travel confidence and bookings are on the rise, but we’re still looking at a slow recovery when you compare figures to pre-Covid levels. So we’ve got a lot of travel companies competing for a smaller market.

How to respond: Address traveler concerns, provide flexibility and be ready to play the long game with travelers who are more likely to book next year – or even later. If you can beat your rivals to winning short-term bookings now, that’s great. If you can’t, put strategies in place to capture leads and position your brand as the one to book from as the market continues to grow and, eventually, returns to pre-pandemic levels.

Also, go the extra mile to win positive reviews from customers during these difficult times. Positive feedback could be your biggest asset in winning new bookings over your rivals, especially with the number of negative reviews at an all-time high.

The best luggage brands in the UK according to our editors

By Lauren Burvill

Best luggage brands UK 2024 according to our editors

If you've ever travelled with a temperamental suitcase, you'll know that choosing the right style, size and quality of luggage can make all the difference to your journey. The best suitcase is one that is reliable, easy to carry and looks good. It can store everything you need for your trip while also surviving the wear and tear of the journey, from baggage claim to bumpy cobbled city streets. Not every suitcase is up to the task, which is why we've narrowed down the best styles to invest in, tried and tested by our editors.

The best luggage brands in the UK at a glance

  • Best value luggage brands: Antler , Away , July and Nere
  • Most stylish luggage brands: Carl Friedrik , Paravel , Brics
  • Best luxury luggage brands: Rimowa , Tumi , Victorinox

Lauren Burvill and Charley Ward

How we tested the best luggage brands

Every luggage brand on this list has been independently tested and reviewed by our editors Charley Ward and Lauren Burvill . We run each piece of luggage through a test in office, and then pass the cases on to members of the wider team to take with them on a flight for further testing. When deciding which are the best luggage brands, we test multiple cases and bags from their range, looking at quality, design features, value for money, as well as overall function and visual appeal.

How do I choose a suitcase?

There's a lot to consider when buying a suitcase, particularly in regard to carry-on luggage restrictions, as they vary greatly between airlines. In addition to weight and dimensions, the best type of suitcase depends on the kind of travel you are planning. Some things to look for include:

  • Durable spinner wheels – especially for travel in the UK and Europe where there are cobblestone streets
  • Internal storage pockets and compression features
  • External pockets – for easy access to laptops and documents
  • Expandable zips – for flexible storage
  • TSA approved lock
  • Texture of casing – whether it's prone to scuffs, dents and scratches
  • Whether there’s a lifetime warranty, especially on pricier high-end cases

For more luggage advice and recommendations, the following guides feature more top picks:

  • The best carry-on luggage
  • The best hard shell suitcases
  • The best suitcases on Amazon
  • The best timeless suitcases
  • The best under-seat cabin bags
  • The best travel backpacks
  • The best packing cubes
  • The best travel tote bags

Away was founded in 2015 by Jen Rubio and Stephanie Korey, who met while working together at American glasses brand Warby Parker. The New York based start-up originally launched with their classic hard shell polycarbonate carry-on luggage which cleverly feature an inbuilt charger for your personal devices. Today it's one of the most popular direct-to-consumer luggage brands, with a cult following on Instagram.

According to our editors: “It was easy to pack, with plenty of storage options and an expandable zip. It was a dream to navigate through a busy airport thanks to its spinner wheels and sturdy frame. I’m such a convert, that I’m considering investing in the matching carry-on and packing cubes for my next trip home." Abigail Malbon, who moved to another country using the Away Large Flex suitcase

Price range: from £245 for the cabin bags, £665 for the large aluminium checked luggage, the cabin and the medium set together is £510.

Our pick: The Medium Flex .

uk travel brands

This British heritage luggage brand was originally established in Lancashire by John Boultbee Brooks in 1914. Today Antler is based in London, while its colourful hard shell Clifton suitcases are a best-seller around the world. Their packing cubes are known to sell out regularly, too.

According to our editors: “I have the Clifton luggage set in mineral and absolutely love it. The cute cabin case is the perfect bag to take on any weekend getaway. All of them are lightweight while still being sturdy and are a dream to whip around busy airports. Each case within the set sits neatly within one another too, so it's very easy to store.” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor

Price range: from £170 for the cabin bags, £240 for the large checked bags, sets of three start at £527.

Our pick: the Clifton cabin with pocket is one of our top-rated carry-on luggage options. The useful exterior pocket for a laptop makes it a great choice for business travel. We've also reviewed the Antler overnight bag and think it makes a great under-seat carry-on bag when flying on easyJet.

uk travel brands

Carl Friedrik

Since it launched in London in 2012, Carl Friedrik has become best known for its beautiful and high-quality Italian leather bags and accessories. Its hard-side luggage range is made from polycarbonate while featuring signature leather as trim details. Their cases are also zipper-free and instead are secured with an aluminium lock frame. Each case comes with a lifetime guarantee and a 100-day trial period.

According to our editors: “I travel regularly with the carry-on pro style, and love the way it looks and navigates. The organisational pockets are really well thought out and designed. What really sets the brand apart is the aluminium lock frame, which feels incredibly safe and secure – although can be a little tricky to lock in place if the case is really full." Sophie Knight, visuals editor

Price range: from £385 for the cabin suitcases to £565 for the large check-in cases.

Our pick: the Carry-on Pro is one of our favourite tried and tested carry-on suitcases .

uk travel brands

The team behind Australian luggage brand July read over 4,000 reviews of existing cases before creating a range designed to tackle the usual sticking points. The result? Stylish, lightweight hard shell luggage in a range of chic colours, with a lifetime quality guarantee and 100-day returns. Their suitcases are made from polycarbonate, with additional reinforcement at the weakest points, and finished with whisper-quiet spinner wheels. The diverse range of customisation options is a key selling point – you can even personalise your case with a picture of your pet.

Price range: From £195 for the smallest cabin suitcase to £295 for the largest check-in rolling case.

According to our editors: “My July carry-on is by far the lightest suitcase I’ve ever tried. Struggling to wrangle my case in and out of the aeroplane’s overhead compartments is now a thing of the past. If you’re looking for a new lightweight carry-on, you won’t get better than this. But my favourite aspect is how quiet the wheels are in use, even over bumpy cobblestones. The good quality telescopic handle makes life easier when manoeuvring around busy airports, too.” Charley Ward, commerce writer.

Our pick: Their zippy Carry On Light , the world's lightest carry-on suitcase and our recommendation for best lightweight suitcase.

uk travel brands

If the spinner case you’re eyeing at the airport is especially sleek and minimalist, it’s probably a Monos. The Vancouver-based premium luggage brand has been winning over a fashionable crowd with its selection of pleasingly minimal cases and bags since its inception in 2019. Timeless design is key, and these pieces are built to last, with aerospace-grade polycarbonate shells and recycled elements wherever possible. Monos is also the first luggage brand to earn climate-neutral certification, meaning it’s achieved net zero carbon emissions as a company – clever stuff.

Price range: From £260 for the smallest carry-on case to £460 for a rolling trunk.

According to our editors: “I’ve had a couple of Monos suitcases, and I’ve always been impressed with the number of internal pockets – something I'm grateful for as a consummate over-packer. The brand’s large check-in case is no different, boasting more inner compartments than any other suitcase I’ve owned, giving me space for my laundry bag, toiletries, electricals and all the just-in-case bits and bobs I please. The compression system and dividers help squeeze everything in neatly. The textured casing is lovely, but it does get marked rather easily. However, it’s nothing a brief wipe down with a damp cloth can’t sort.” Charley Ward, commerce writer.

Our pick: The Check In Large .

uk travel brands

For high quality that does no harm, look to Paravel 's Aviator, the world's first carbon-neutral suitcase. The concept is achieved via sustainable sourcing and manufacturing methods along with the use of recycled materials – the polycarbonate case is made from recycled water cooler tanks, and the internal organisation pouches are made from recycled plastic bottles. Even the zippers are recycled. Paravel also offset all of the carbon emissions generated from the production of the suitcase right through to the delivery and even its first trip (based on an average flight). The credentials are admirable, but we also think this is one of the most stylish check-in cases at this price point, available in five different colours and featuring smart recycled vegan leather accents.

Price range: from £435 for the cabin suitcases to £525 for the large check-in cases.

Our pick: The Carry-on Plus vegan leather trimmed hardshell suitcase .

uk travel brands

As part of the LVMH group, German designer luggage brand Rimowa has some of the slickest suitcases on the market. While they’re probably best known for their aluminium cases, the check-in medium case is made from an ultralight polycarbonate shell that comes in four different glossy shades and one matte. While not every traveller will be open to the high price tag, if you’re a frequent flyer looking for the best in looks and function, this is a worthy investment.

Price range: from £465 for the cabin suitcases to £1,340 for the large check-in cases.

Our pick: the Essential cabin bag .

uk travel brands

Another luggage brand to be born out of Australia, Nere has recently made its way to the UK with its trend-led selection of bags, suitcases and travel accessories at surprisingly pleasing price points. We can see why they’ve become a favourite with the Instagram crowd; the range comes in a selection of pretty sorbet shades that will stand out on your social feeds and the luggage carousel alike. Considering their very reasonable price points, it's impressive the brand also offers a 10-year warranty.

Price range: from £119 for the cabin suitcases to £119 for the large check-in cases.

Our pick: the Stori 75cm suitcase

uk travel brands

Horizn Studios

Engineered in Germany, Horizn Studios specialises in luggage with a lifetime warranty, made from all-vegan materials, and sent to you using neutral shipping. There's a lot to choose from – their Circle One range is made from a plant-based hard shell – but in terms of quality, price and function, our pick is the M5 cabin bag, a partly recycled hardshell case with a front laptop pocket, recycled polyester lining and enough space to last a five-day trip.

Price range: from £360 for the cabin suitcases to £490 for the large check-in cases.

Our pick: their classic H5 cabin luggage .

uk travel brands

With functions inspired by the Swiss Army Knife, it’s no surprise Victorinox 's sleek cases are built to last. For a strong and spacious option, we love the large Lexicon hard-side case, featuring the latest advances in moulding technology plus a 100 per cent virgin polycarbonate shell, TSA-approved combination lock and super-recessed spinner wheels that allow for more packing room. All Victorinox luggage is covered by a warranty that lasts up to eleven years. If you travel often and don't pack light, this one is worth the investment.

Our pick: the Lexicon hardside .

uk travel brands

American Tourister

Established in 1933, this Samsonite-owned luggage brand is best known for its affordable lightweight suitcases in vibrant colours, as well as its collaborations with Disney and Marvel. Many of its popular styles fit within budget airline allocations and are available on Amazon , making it a quick and affordable option if you need a suitcase in a hurry.

Price range: from £139 for the cabin suitcases to £185 for the large check-in cases.

Our pick: the holiday heat spinner hand luggage .

uk travel brands

Launching in 1975, American luggage brand Tumi gained a popular following in the 1980s with its collection of soft ballistic nylon travel bags. Today Tumi is at the forefront of innovative and sustainable design, with a strong focus on testing each and every aspect of its luggage and bags (sometimes up to 30 unique tests), as well as utilising recycled materials and offering a global repair network programme. True to their heritage, the suitcase brand also offers some of the best soft-sided luggage on the market today. But the luggage brand is best known for its signature aluminium cases, as well as its limited-edition collaborations, most recently with supercar maker McLaren .

Price range: from £540 for the cabin suitcases to £1,580 for the largest aluminium rolling case.

Our pick: International Slim Super Léger Carry-On .

uk travel brands

Bric's

For a bag that prioritises style without sacrificing function, our readers love Bric’s, which has been crafting travel bags and leather goods out of the  Lake Como  region since the 1950s. For their Bellagio case, the Italian brand has modernised the vintage-style travel trunk by adding practical features like a front compartment with a USB port, a zipped interior and four 360-degree spinner wheels.

Price range: from £465.

Our pick: the four-wheel cabin suitcase .

uk travel brands

Light and secure, Samsonite's S'Cure range of luggage is one of our best budget-friendly options, and it’s a bonus that it's available on Amazon. The hardside spinner is light but sturdy and scratch-resistant and comes with a three-point locking system. What makes these really stand out are the colour options. There are seven in total, including bright shades of red, yellow and blue, so they're very easy to spot in a crowded airport.

Price range: from £97 for the cabin suitcases to £425 for the large check-in cases.

Our pick: the Samsonite S'Cure Eco .

uk travel brands

BÉIS Travel

American luggage label BÉIS has a cult global following thanks to their thoughtfully designed bags and hard-side suitcases available in a range of fashionable colours. One of their best sellers in The Weekender is a clever travel tote bag with a separate bottom compartment for storing shoes separately, as well as a zipper pocket that can slide over a luggage handle. At just 4.2kg for the 26” check-in suitcase , we’re crowning this the best lightweight luggage on our list. There’s also a built-in weight limit indicator, so you’ll never be hit with an additional charge at the airport.

Price range: from £223 for the cabin suitcases to £335 for the large check-in cases.

Our pick: the carry-on roller with the matching weekender bag .

uk travel brands

Louis Vuitton

For arriving in style there’s no finer choice than a Louis Vuitton case, and the legendary LV logo always gets the fashion nod of approval. This particular design exudes innovation with its wheels, ultra-light canvas and leather trim.

Price range: from £2,200.

Our pick: the classic Horizon 50 MY LV Heritage case .

uk travel brands

Briggs & Riley

Luxury US travel brand Briggs & Riley has been crafting its meticulously created bags and suitcases from its New York base since 1993. The prices are premium, but the brand offers one of the most impressive lifetime guarantees we've found, promising to repair damaged bags free of charge, for any reason, with no proof of purchase required – even if it was damaged by the airline. NHS staff can save 15% on buys in the UK, too.

Price range: From £179 for duffel bags to £869 for its formalwear case

Our pick: The large expandable spinner

According to our editors: "I’ve been using a rickety hand-me-down suitcase from my parents for my whole life and, as a travel journalist who is nearly 30, it’s not the chicest look. This Briggs & Riley suitcase ticks all of the right boxes. It has a durable, water-resistant hard shell and looks sleek and contained in spite of the undoubtedly overloaded contents. I like the in-built expansion and compression system, which increases packing capacity by a very handy 17 per cent, and the three inner compartments perfect for splitting up clothing – a must for a packing cube obsessive like me. The TSA-approved lock reassures me that my belongings are secure in the hold, as well," Olivia Morelli, senior writer

uk travel brands

Fashionistas will know vintage-leaning luggage brand Steamline, whose pretty matching suitcase sets hark back to a more stylish time. Case in point: we've spotted Margot Robbie using these cases during Barbie promotion, not least during a Vogue cover shoot . With eye-catching leather trims on the outside and vibrant patterned finishes inside, we've not found a more photogenic selection of cases to date.

Price range: From around £200 for a crossbody to around £500 for a check-in case

Our pick: The Editor Carry-on in brown

Which suitcase is better, hard or soft?

Looking for new luggage? The best type of suitcase for you will depend on whether you plan to check in the case or carry it on the plane.

For check-in suitcases:  We recommend opting for a hard-shell suitcase. While they tend to cost more, these suitcases are often the most durable, offer better protection for valuables and are easier to clean than soft-sided luggage.

For carry-on suitcases:  If you're after maximum packing space, soft-shell suitcases are the better option as you can often fit more in. Equally, if you're travelling with just an under-seat cabin bag, a soft weekender or backpack is a better option. For a quality case to fit in the overhead bin, hard-shell carry-on cases are the better investment. We love hard shell cases that come with an external pocket, like the best-selling Clifton cabin case with pocket , so you can use it as your sole travel bag if needed.

What size suitcase do I need for my trip?

Brands usually offer suitcases in carry-on, medium and large sizes. Some also have trunk-style and extra-large options as well. For most travellers, unless you’re in the habit of setting off on month-long jaunts, a set of three – carry-on, medium and large – should be all you need for the majority of trips. Most brands’ offerings slot inside each other for neat storage. Remember you have an under-seat bag allowance, too, for all your in-flight necessities.

For trips of up to three days , a carry-on suitcase will likely be sufficient. See our full guide to the best carry-on luggage for more recommendations.

For holidays of up to a week , a medium suitcase – usually with a capacity of 50 to 120 litres – provides a good balance between being large enough to house all you need without being unnecessarily unwieldy or heavy. The exception would be if you’re bringing a lot of specialist kit, such as diving or ski gear or bulky cameras, for example. In those instances, switch out your regular checked bag for a larger suitcase.

Two week-plus getaways will require a large check-in case, especially if you’re partial to bringing back souvenirs. These cases tend to have a capacity of around 55 to 140 litres. To maximise space efficiency, packing cubes or even vacuum bags is a game-changer. I travelled to Iceland for three months during winter – ie lots of bulky jumpers – using just one large suitcase thanks to the use of vacuum bags . Think cleverly, and you’ll be surprised what you can get packed into just one suitcase!

Is it a good idea to lock your checked luggage?

In a word, yes. All of the cases in our best luggage guide have TSA-approved locks, which ensure that security can open your case without damaging it should it be necessary. Locking your case provides peace of mind that your items will remain secured inside and protected as best as possible against theft, especially if you’re travelling with valuables. Modern built-in TSA locks mean you don't need an additional bulky padlock either, so your suitcase remains looking chic and as lightweight as possible.

How much should I spend on check-in luggage?

This will depend entirely on your own budget and tastes. However, we’ve found that the best luggage brands’ prices tend to start from around £200 for cabin cases, £300 for medium and £400 upwards for large suitcases. You can make savings by buying a luggage set –  Antler offers a 15 per cent discount on sets, and you can save up to £80 at July and £150 at Monos when you buy three, for example. We’ve also found some brands that offer great-value luggage options –  Nere has medium check-in cases for under £150, as does American Tourister .

12 Best travel backpack 2023 Osprey to Samsonite

The 12 best travel backpack for every kind of escape

By Owen Gough

Get packed up and head out to adventure with GQ’s pick of the best travel backpacks for every destination

January is a time for holiday planning, right? There’s not a single person in the UK right now who couldn't do with a brief foray abroad to soak up the sun –our pick is the Maldives, in case you’re curious – but aside from making sure you actually get something booked in, you need to make sure you’re prepared for the upcoming journey when it comes to luggage. The best travel backpacks are our essential pick as you board the plane, largely because you’ve got to have someplace to store your snacks on the trip, but also because they allow you to bring spare clothes, headphones, a book, laptops or portable games consoles to keep you entertained without provoking the wrath of airline baggage allowance.

Carry-on size travel bags are vital to getting that little bit extra luggage on your journey, eking out all the space you can while also being comfortable and ready for treks across terminals, with compression straps to stay ergonomic and side pockets to tuck away boarding passes, passports or keys to save you the faff of hauling them out of your jeans before the security check.

In fact, the travel backpack is so versatile it can handle pretty much any venture you might envisage, from the daily grinding office commute to the day hike up a mountain on your family holiday, keeping your valuables safe and easily accessible regardless of where you happen to be. Ideal for public transport, hiking and jumping between flights, the humble backpack is your globe-trotting saviour. If you're still nursing your ageing school rucksack, allow us to guide you to the best travel backpacks for the smoothest journey of your life.

What are the best travel backpacks 2023?

Skip to: What is the best type of travel backpack? | What should you look for when buying a travel backpack? | GQ’s guide to the best luggage, suitcases and backpacks for your travels

What is the best type of travel backpack?

The main variation in travel backpack types is the opening style. You have the more traditional top-opening option but there are also zip-open models (also known as clamshell opening bags) which can fully lift from the side, like a lid on a suitcase. The former is great for quickly loading and emptying, while the latter is ideal if you're travelling and want to dip in and out of your case, getting access to items at the bottom as easily as those at the top.

Others may add a front pocket to store those special valuables in a quick-to-reach place, or a water bottle pocket on the side, though be prepared to have to tip out any water before making your way through security.

Adjustable backpacks are pretty standard but some have more adjustment options than others. Breathable mesh covers, hip belts, backpack straps, chest straps and other ergonomic features can make it much easier on your body to carry more around, but be warned these will typically be bigger bags and therefore may not comply with restrictions. You may want to look out for this if you're going to be walking long distances and need maximum comfort and intelligent load distribution.

It’s worth highlighting that some carry-on luggage like wheeled miniature suitcases can also be used for the same purpose, so long as they comply with airline weight and size policy. For example, Antler, Carl Friedrik and many more offer hard-shell cases that are just as useful for storing in-travel entertainment while remaining small enough to stuff under the seat or in an overhead bin.

What should you look for when buying a travel backpack?

Access: The choice between a top or side-loading access is important. You may pay a little more for side loading but it means your life will be easier if you're planning to live out of the pack for a longer, multi-location trip. The additional functionality of being able to open up the entire bag across longer trips can be the difference between a stressful and breezy journey.

Pockets: Having lots of pockets can be a great feature which means quick and easy access to things like wallet, passport, sun cream, hats, shoes and so on, without having to dive into the backpack or, in many cases, even having to take it off.

Weight: While high-quality backpacks can be lighter than cases, they vary in weight. If you're only wearing it minimally, a heavier and more pricey option might be fine. But if you're walking long distances you'll want to keep this weight as low as possible.

Material type: Variations in material type mean different levels of protection for your kit. Some offer waterproofing, while others have tougher outers to avoid damage. Some will use more flexible materials leading to greater comfort than others.

Capacity: Ultimately, you want your travel backpack to straddle that balance between being small and easy to carry and capacious enough to hold your personal items on your journey. Most travel backpacks are capacious enough to fit roughly 72 hours’ worth of clothes and essential items (underwear and a change of clothes) while still having enough space for a laptop laundry bag or lunch box.

Osprey UNLTD AirScape 68 Mens

Best for: Heavy-duty long-distance travelling

What we like: Huge capacity | Comfortable, adjustable straps | Included rain cover and 8L top lid | Lumbar support | What we don’t like: Very expensive

  • Litre capacity: 68l
  • Material: High-tenacity nylon
  • Weight: 3kg

In our opinion, Osprey's AirScape sits at the absolute pinnacle of travel backpack design, though it comes with a steep price for the pleasure of owning.

Designed by Osprey's founder, Mike Pfotenhauer, this bag can accompany you on almost any adventure you might have, from an arctic exploration to a terrifying first-time backpacking venture across Europe. Utilising impressive 3D-printed moulds, the back plate slips around your spine for supreme comfort and lumbar support without feeling restrictive. Lugging this 68L monster might look intimidating, but it only weighs 3KG on its own and the auto-lift system of straps and harnesses that loop around your shoulders and chest means it's immensely easy to carry long distances.

For heavy packers, there's additional storage that can be added on top for toiletries, washing or those items you need to grab quickly when passing through borders. £650. At ospreyeurope.com

DB Hugger Backpack 25L Black Out

Best for: Skiers, heavy-duty travellers and backcountry movers

What we like: Supreme security for your gear | Compatibility with other Hugger gear | Durable What we don’t like: Bulky

  • Litre capacity: 25l
  • Material: Padded recycled polyester
  • Weight: 1.10kg

If it’s sturdy security on your mind for your travels, then it doesn’t get more protective than the Hugger Black Out. Oozing street cred cool with the all-black design, it’s a solid, durable backpack for weekend trips, commutes, train-hopping or simply knocking about town. Why is it so durable? Utilising a unique ribcage system that features internal grids to maintain the duffel bag shape, it’s so rigid that you could chuck it in the overhead bin, drop it or ding it jumping onto the ski lift and remain confident nothing is broken inside.

However, the truly impressive feature here is that you can hook it up to the larger Hugger duffel bag or check-in suitcase using the combined clips to save your back muscles some grief and breeze through the airport carrying one bag. It piggybacks on the larger bag to alleviate some of the weight issues often discovered when packing for long-haul journeys. The clamshell opening offers a decent enough space to adjust your packing or grab something important from the quick-access pockets and, for the price, it’s one of the most complete travel backpacks around. £169. Nordace Siena 2 Smart

Best for: Tech lovers on the move

What we like: USB cable | Key set carabiner | Compartment for 15.6” laptop | Water resistant What we don’t like: Fairly pricy

  • Litre capacity: 22l
  • Material: Polyester and micro-fibre vegan leather
  • Weight: 1.29kg

Redefining what the backpack world looks like, Nordace is one of our favourite sets for modern-day travelling, commuting and hiking. First off, the entire range is handsome no matter which set you go for thanks to the minimalist, clean design, but our pick would be the smart range, particularly the Siena 2 for your general travelling needs.

How is it smart? Well, it’s one of the most well-equipped backpacks for the modern traveller, complete with USB charging port, RFID-Blocking card slots, retractable key leash and a dedicated safe pocket for your sunglasses. It’s perfectly happy to comply with standard aircraft overhead bin restrictions and the main compartment is capacious enough to store a 15.6” laptop. £116. At nordace.com

The 7 best mattress toppers, tried and tested for an extra layer of luxury

Patagonia Altvia Pack 22L

Best for: Hill-walking, light hiking and battling the city commute

What we like: Incredibly lightweight | Front access clam shell opening | Eco-friendly materials What we don’t like: Quite small | Expensive for the size | Limited colour options

  • Material: Polyester
  • Weight: 678g

We love a good long-distance walk, but it's always made a bit better when we can take some snacks with us. Day hiking or travelling light can sometimes be tricky when it comes to backpacks, as sizing, weight and capacity can become major headaches when you're not sure what to go for. But if there's one brand that knows how to take care of you on your travels, it's Patagonia.

The Altvia 22L option is durably and sustainably made, water resistant and big enough to stow away a change of clothes, your essential documents and a few other must-have items like a post-walk snack or a phone charger.

Mostly a solid option for mountain-side recces rather than as a companion on your commute, you'll be scaling the hardest treks with confidence when you've got this bag on your back. £102. At alpinetrek.co.uk

Gifts for Girlfriends Antler Chelsea Backpack

Antler Chelsea daypack

Best for: Day trips for your most essential items

What we like: Back sleeve to fit over a suitcase handle | Water resistant | Detachable internal packing pocket | Internal packing straps | Space for a 16.5-inch laptop What we don’t like: Not big enough for longer trips

  • Litre capacity: 19l
  • Material: Durable nylon
  • Weight: 0.98kg

Flying off of shelves across the UK and then flying across Europe accompanying the smart shopper on their travels, Antler's Chelsea daypack is an exceptional option for those who travel light. Granted, it's not capacious enough to cope with a trip to Bali or Australia, but shorter trips are a joy. And having said that it's reasonably small, it's still big enough to fit a 16.5-inch laptop and has detachable internal pockets to either help you with your organisation or make more space.

On the design side, there are plenty of colour choices, and it's got a back sleeve so you can slot it over the handle of a suitcase, and we can't tell you how much easier it is to have all your gear in one place. £140. At antler.co.uk

Best for: Long-term travelling hiking backpack

What we like: Ergonomic design | Storage options in the shoulder straps | Durable design What we don’t like: Fairly small | Could do with more colour options

  • Weight: 1.09kg

Hands up if you’ve ever been halfway through a trek only to discover the super-cheap daypack you’re using to keep your food, drink and spare clothes in is simply not fit for the job. Be that a broken strap or not enough space to fit an energy-surging Mars bar, ensuring your travel backpack is equipped to deal with your adventure is vital. The Montane Trailblazer is a surefire way to guarantee all your clothes and gear are securely stowed in transit across mountains, through long-haul flights or simply on a holiday day trip. It’s a proper hiking backpack used for getting around the more rugged environments one might find themselves in, but also it’s incredibly lightweight.

What we love about the backpack is the ergonomic design, with a body-hugging sternum strap, a spine-friendly back panel, breathable material and plenty of clips and pockets for storing hiking sticks, water bottles or just a quick snack. Just as durable in mountainous weather as it is on a lad’s holiday to Tenerife, this is the travel pack of your dreams. £100. At montane.com

Nordace Edin Large Flap backpack

Best for: City-ready commuters and digital nomads

What we like: Large storage | Complies with overhead compartment laws | Quick-access pockets | Water resistant What we don’t like: Fairly pricy

  • Litre capacity: 28l

If the smart Nordace above is a bit too small and dainty for your rugged adventures and battles on the commuter train, the Edin large provides are sturdier alternative with plenty of smarts to tempt you across. Sporting a durable polyester chassis that’s roomy enough for laptop sleeves, water bottles, lunch and a spare change of clothes, it’s a properly good option for city commuters looking for something solid to keep office gear safe and secure.

The best backpacks offer a deep, cavernous interior with quick access to the stuff you really need. Here, a handy flap at the opening covers a series of pockets where you can store and grab passports, keys, wallets or other stuff you might need to get in a pinch. And if foreign travel is in your future, it will fit in under-seat and overhead storage without upsetting the airlines. £134. At nordace.com

Carl Friedrik Bowen

Best for: Fashionable commuting

What we like: Elegant leather design | Three colour choices | Padded laptop pocket What we don’t like: Expensive | Easily scratched | Reasonably small

  • Litre capacity: 18.7l
  • Material: Vachetta leather
  • Weight: 1.9kg

Carl Friedrik's luggage is the sort of aspirational clobber found in the hands of the wealthy and stylish – genuinely used as the luggage of the rich and famous in shows like Succession and White Lotus – but it's not so spenny that it can be out of your reach. If you're willing to shell out a bit extra on your bags, the Bowen is a beautiful leather number that packs a visual wallop and still houses enough space for passports, books, flight tickets and a few other nicknacks for the journey. A padded internal pocket will keep a small laptop protected, and it also features a sleeve to loop over suitcase handles. £575. At carlfiredrik.com

Best for: Professional heavy-duty photography

What we like: Specifically designed for cameras | Ergonomic shoulder strap | Full frontal opening What we don’t like: Expensive | Quite specialised

  • Litre capacity: 32l
  • Material: Padded polyester

DB’s best-selling backpack gets a beefy upgrade here with the Pro edition, a carry-on travel backpack designed to accompany you on any adventure, from morning train to far-flung flight. This one specifically has hardcore photographers in mind, built to be compatible with DB’s camera insert for the ultimate snap-happy backpack. The chassis is mega sturdy, roomy enough for spare batteries and lenses or, if you remove the insert, plenty of room for clothes, a laptop compartment and your toiletries should you need it.

Individual compartments are great for storing phone chargers, and your passport or stationary is quickly accessible with the fold-out opening that gives you a complete overview of what you’ve packed without having to rifle through your gear and mess up your carefully planned folding. £329. At uk.dbjourney.com

Thule Subterra 34L

Thule Subterra 34L

Best for: Comfortable travel with easy access to compartments and secret pockets

What we like: Padded laptop compartment | Tablet pocket | Zippered side access panels What we don’t like: Pricey for the size

  • Litre capacity: 34l
  • Material: Nylon
  • Weight: 1.25kg

Appearances can be deceiving and this backpack certainly fits that description as it crams in travel essentials into a compact backpack design. The 34-litre backpack uses a roll-top magnetic closure for quick and easy access as well as expansion potential. The removable packing cube allows you to keep clothes stored efficiently and available for quick access, ideal for moving about. There's also a dedicated laptop padded sleeve with SafeEdge construction and secure flap closure, making this a great business trip companion. The cord management system is another nice touch for keeping your devices charged and untangled on the move. The breathable perforated EVA shoulder straps are comfortable but this also attaches to rolling luggage using the pass-through panel. You'll also find plenty of pockets ideal for water bottles, documents and beyond. A true lightweight pack for travel. £150. At johnlewis.com

Osprey Atmos AG 65

Osprey Atmos AG 65

What we like: Rugged, durable design | Side access pockets | Internal hydration reservoir sleeve What we don’t like: Highly specialised towards hiking and mountaineering

  • Litre capacity: 65l
  • Weight: 2.3kg

From a hiking week away to a trek into the Himalayas, this travel backpack is a thoroughly solid pick. The 65-litre capacity and comfortable AntiGravity suspension system make it ideal for week-to-week travellers who will be doing a lot of mileage on foot with the pack. Thanks to great ventilation and an adjustable hip belt which can be changed while walking, this lets you get comfortable for long hikes. The top section is floatable, meaning you have a super-safe water-repellent section to keep gear safe, even if it goes overboard. Zippered hip belt pockets, a sleep bag compartment and internal hydration reservoir all make for an outdoor-focused pack for whatever you need this for. £290. UK’s top 20 most popular travel and tourism websites in 2023

' src=

A new study has revealed that Tripadvisor was the most popular travel and tourism website across the UK in 2023.   SEO agency Digital Climax analysed annual web traffic data to find the UK’s most popular travel and tourism websites over the past year based on the total number of visits they received each month.

Using SEMrush, they compiled a list of the country’s twenty most visited travel and tourism websites and then used Ahrefs to find the estimated number of UK visitors throughout 2023. These results were then ranked to determine the most popular sites.

Tripadvisor ranked as the most popular travel and tourism website across the UK in 2023, with approximately 428 million total visits in the past year. It receives an average of 35.7 million monthly visits and was visited most in August when it received approximately 41.2 million website visits. Tripadvisor specialises in comparing travel websites to showcase the best deals and as a platform for user-generated reviews.

Booking.com came second with around 127.9 million total visits throughout 2023. It had the most visits in August last year, with around 12.6 million visits, and receives an average of 10.7 million visits monthly. Booking.com compares the prices of hotels, flights, transport, and attractions to highlight the best deals when planning a holiday.

TUI took third place with around 120.2 million visits in 2023. The travel agency website was most popular in January, with around 11.3 million visits, and receives an average of 2 million visits each month. TUI is known for its holidays, cruises, flights, and hotels across the world and owns multiple airlines, cruise lines, and hotel chains.

Trainline came fourth with around 116.2 million visits throughout 2023. It had the most hits in July last year, with 10.7 million visits, and receives an average of 9.7 million visits per month. Trainline specialises in selling train tickets and rail cards, alongside showing live train times and railway station information through its website and mobile app.

Skyscanner ranked fifth with approximately 86 million visits in 2023. It receives an average of 7.1 million monthly visits and was visited most in July when it received approximately 8.5 million website visits. Skyscanner allows users to research, compare and book travel options for their trips worldwide, including flights, hotels and car hire.

Other travel and tourism websites that made the top ten include Easyjet , Jet2holidays , British Airways, Expedia , and Loveholidays .

Axl Van Steenacker, SEO specialist and founder of Digital Climax, commented on the findings:  “The British public has always spent much time traveling for work or pleasure, whether staying in the country or heading abroad on holiday. According to the Office of National Statistics, UK residents spent around £58.5 billion and made 71 million visits abroad in 2022 after the easing of coronavirus (COVID-19) travel restrictions.

“Travel websites make it easier than ever to book transport ahead of time, or explore potential destinations, with sites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com covering all aspects of planning a trip. It will be interesting to see whether the rankings for different airlines and hotels stay the same or fluctuate from year to year as new data is released.”
