When you go to a site that's 8000 years old you bring a picnic, even in the rain.

The sacred site is amazing, and the road that takes you there even more so.

Action-packed peace and quiet.

Tourists rush. Pilgrims take their time and inhale what's  around them .

Sometimes we walk all the way up a hill just to walk back down again. Because there are dragons there.

There are no mass-produced meals, everything is made from scratch, including the oven.

Ten years later, these perfect strangers are still speaking to each other. And me!

When this is the preferred mode of transport, getting up before dawn is... oh you know the drill.

Amazing the souvenirs some people try to squeeze into their luggage.

What good is a pyramid unless you have it to yourself for yoga?

Pas de toilet door? Pas de probleme, monsieur.

Sometimes, just for fun, we have dinner inside a 4th century room and drink and talk and drink and...

Personal time inside a sacred cave with the tide coming in? If it was good for Merlin, it’s good for us.

Climbed mountain, entered Templar castle, saw sacred chamber, walked down, drank Templar wine.

After three glasses of Templar wine some are capable of moving a mountain.

Having coped with the sacred site, we still had to cope with the scenery.

Sometimes, just for fun, we let people meditate in ritual chambers.

And just for fun, we come back a year later and wake them up.

Getting to the island and the Gothic cathedral is easy, once you negotiate the quicksand.

Reaching the Gothic cathedral is easy, once you navigate the incoming tide.

Quicksand, tide, Why are these people still smiling? 

These poor wretches, after a full day of  sacred sites, forced to sit in the street for their meal.

Discovering humility through sacred space? Easy. Returning unspoiled? Difficult.

Even today there are temples you can have to yourself, if you know a guide who’s done his homework.

Some tours take you to a loud restaurant for a finale. Here, dinner can wait. 

The spirit of nature called. We dialled right back.

When they're built by an advanced civilization, staring at rocks is rational.

Yet another outdoor dinner in a humdrum restaurant in a boring village.

You don’t need to make sacrifices to be on these tours, but if you’re willing, we have the table.

The quiet solitude of an ancient holy well. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Sometimes the spirit of place requires a hardy trek into a gorge.

Some people take ayahuasca. We actually see amazing stuff for real.

To keep costs down I prefer to take the train. Even if it requires two days in the waiting room.

To set the tone, we began with a cozy meal at The House of Rats. The menu?

If the gods smile upon us we get to meditate inside Stonehenge. We smile in return. 

Punctuality is maintained by a severe regimen of corrective behaviour.

Deep meditation beneath megaliths. You don’t get this in Detroit.

“Are there snakes inside this hermit’s cell?” Nah…crocodiles ate them."

 At 14,000 ft along the mountain road there’s a Peruvian woman knitting a rug. No, really.

Went to the high Andes to see who was crazy enough to live there. The locals came out to find out the same.

Another tough day. One of many, many such excruciating moments on my tours.

We planned lunch. Tthen this outdoor market appeared. Plans changed. Damn.

I always insist on a high standard of wardrobe, after all, if the temples look good, you should too.

It’s not the scale or size of the temple that matters, it’s the… oh, never mind...

It’s old, musty, the fireplace is bigger than the dining room, menu is in French. We eat here.

“No, I’m not jet-lagged!" “But your eating on a plate that's upside down."

Masters 2024: You won't believe what Fred Couples has been doing to make sure he's healthy enough to play at Augusta

A UGUSTA, Ga. — Fred Couples refuses to go away. The Masters just means too much to him. And the lengths the 1992 champion will go to for another few tours of Augusta National Golf Club, the outright stubbornness, deserves respect.

One of the most popular players in the annals of the Masters, Couples is preparing to make his 39th start, though “preparing” is a term loosely applied to the 64-year-old Hall of Famer. When he played 18 holes on Sunday with two-time champion Jose Maria Olazabal and two friends, it marked the first time he had touched a club since March 21 when he withdrew after the pro-am at the Galleri Classic in Rancho Mirage, Calif. On Tuesday, he played the front nine with Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas in what has become a traditional outing for the trio.

On Wednesday, he might play in the Par-3 Contest. Or he might not. He might hit balls. Or not. He won’t jeopardize his ability to step on the first tee at 11:54 a.m. Thursday, going so far as to eschew hitting anything more than the four woods he now carries in his bag. No sense bending over, even a little, until he absolutely must.

The most important shots he’s taken the last month were “several” cortisone shots in his back, an attempt to ameliorate a new injury in a decades-long battle with back problems. He brought along Dr. Chad Beauchamp, a noted physical therapist from California, to provide extra assistance to keep loose a portion of his right back that has been nagging him for more than three years.

His lower back, which first blew up in 1994 in Miami, is relatively fine. This new injury is more perplexing, the result of a mishap in the final round of the 2020 Sanford International in Sioux Falls, S.D., that was equally injurious to his pride.

“The first hole is a 4-iron off the tee, and I turned to shake hands with [fellow competitor] Willie Wood because I haven't played with him since college, and I turned and kind of got a little further [leaning forward], and [the tee] built like that [steep on the sides], and I just slipped and went right down and bounced right back up,” Couples said, chuckling slightly at the memory of the ignominious mishap. “Seventy-six shots later, on a course that everyone shoots 67 on, I was done.

“It's just been there forever,” he added. “I don't really understand it. I'm going to get an MRI when I get home next week. I don't like doing those things, but just so they can see if it's a new spot because certainly my [lower] back feels really, really good.”

There have been plenty of older Masters champions who have perhaps hung around too long in terms of taking advantage of a lifetime exemption into the event. Couples, even at less than full strength, has been able to handle the continually lengthened Augusta National exam. He has made 31 cuts, second all-time behind Jack Nicklaus’ 37, breaking a tie with Gary Player after completing 72 holes last year. Last year, Couples struggled to a pair of closing 76s that left him T-50, but he still became the oldest player in tournament history to advance to the weekend.

He and Player also own a share of the record, at least for a few more days, for most consecutive cuts made at 23. They are tied with Woods, who has a chance to break the mark this week.

Couples competed three times on the senior tour early in the season, but then shut it down completely to ensure he could give it a go this week in the 88th Masters. His reasoning was simple and direct. “Because I wanted to play,” he said.

He fully accepts the physical limitations ahead of him. He has to play around the injury and hope he doesn’t aggravate it. And to make another cut, he has to putt well. “I better putt well,” he said.

“You know what, if I drive it somewhere and I've got downhill lies … the hardest shots I have are like with wedges and sand wedges, so I open way up and I hit a wedge 90 yards now. So the [pain] threshold is when it pops,” Couples said. “Then I don't know what's going to happen. But if I can play around it and get it around, I'll be fine. I could go to the range now and look pretty good hitting drivers and 3-woods because I'm so far away, and I won't even warm up with an iron. It's really not painful until I make a bad swing, and then it's toast.

“The last thing I want to do is come out and embarrass myself by a bad score,” he added. “I know I can hit the ball. What is that? I don't know if that's a 73 or a 75, but I'm not shooting 80. There's no way. I'm just not that kind of person. I wouldn't do that. Can I shoot 80? Of course I can. But I'm not planning on it.”

  Some years ago a team of scientists traveled to Egypt to prove that elusive border between science and mysticism. Their task was to measure the energy of temples and figure out whether it comes from the buildings, the people, or a combination of both. The results were surprising in that places such as the pyramids, and temples such as Edfu and Luxor, generated an output of energy as large as that created by a group of people in deep meditation. But when people and temples combined, the readings were remarkable.

  

  This is why I've designed a tour of Egypt's temples that differs from others, one that gives you time to wonder and wander. Because when it comes to these ancient sacred places there's a point where talking ceases and experience must take over. And Egypt's temples need to be experienced if they are to be understood in their original context. Like a sheet of blotting paper, one needs to soak up their energy.

  

  So in this adventure we'll be walking in the footsteps of Watchers and Shining Ones, the gods who set up the foundation of the present temples over 13,000 years ago; and their progeny — the Followers of Horus —an elite group of scholars and magicians who returned after a global flood to resume an impressive temple-building culture. What drove their vision that led to the legacy we have today?

  

  Among the plethora of goodies, we'll look at how restricted chambers such as those of Thutmosis III and Unas were designed for the highest initiation experience; the secrets of creating a portal written on Edfu's wall; the entry into the Otherworld at Saqqara; and what was really sealed in those 100-ton granite boxes inside the Serapeum?

  

  We'll also gain special access inside two pyramids to experience the actual path once taken by initiates, and if permitted, a damn good meditation inside the mis-named Kings Chamber. Where you will certainly wander and wonder.

  You will be driven from Cairo airport to the palatial Mena House Hotel where you will be welcomed with stunning views of the Great Pyramids. The remainder of your day is for relaxing and re-energizing. (Overnight in Cairo at the Mena House Hotel or similar)

  

  Start the day correctly with a visit to the Valley Temple, an austere and megalithic complex used as a preparatory hall for the pyramids. Followed by the Sphinx enclosure.

  After lunch, we will approach the pyramids by camel, across the Giza plateau, to gaze upon them in their complete splendour. We will visit the Pyramid of Menkaure, the one that attracts the least attention and thus the repository of perhaps the biggest secret of the entire complex. 

  Return to hotel for an evening at leisure. (Overnight in Cairo at the Mena House Hotel or similar)

  

  After a short bus ride to Saqqara, a vast, ancient ritual site named for the god of rebirth, we descend into the Pyramid of Unas, one of the greatest initiation chambers and home to the oldest texts outlining the process for accessing the Otherworld (and returning). Afterwards, we will explore the underground Serapeum featuring two-dozen, 90-ton monolithic granite boxes of exquisite craftsmanship, once used to protect something special.

  After lunch, we will walk the main complex and the majestic step pyramid of Djoser, with free time to ponder over the day's events. (Overnight in Cairo at the Mena House Hotel or similar)

  

  We travel to Dahshur to see the elegant Bent Pyramid and its cunningly hidden geometry depicting human DNA and the motion of the Earth. Adjacent, the Red Pyramid – named for its high iron content – has the second largest base of any pyramid in Egypt. We will explore its interior passages.

  After lunch we visit the Sultan Hassan Mosque, remarkable for its massive size and innovative architectural components, and still considered one of the most impressive historic monuments in Cairo today.

  We then go to our hotel, conveniently located near the airport for our next adventure.  (Overnight in Cairo at Le Meridien Airport Hotel or similar)

  

  Phase II of our adventure takes us on a short flight to Sohag. After lunch we spend the afternoon in the temple of Seti I at Abydos, with rooms resplendent in frescoes depicting the various gods and their teachings.

  The highlight here is a rare private access into the Osirion, a megalithic chamber over 9000 years old, once mistaken for being underground, where the resurrection mysteries of Osiris were taught and practiced.

  A bus ride to Dendera temple, House of Hathor and site of healing. In addition to its beautifully preserved frescoes and ceilings is a replica of a zodiac ceiling, unique in that it is centered on Taurus, thus placing it in the epoch of 4400 BC.

  After lunch we continue on to Luxor, perhaps stopping enroute for a little jewelry shopping! Evening at leisure in Luxor, by the pool or take a calèche into the centre of town. (Overnight in Luxor at the Pavillon Winter Hotel or similar)

  

  Morning is for exploring the sprawling open air Temple of Karnak complex, the main religious centre of the ancient cult of Amun, with each pharaoh adding to or altering the complex over thousands of years. It is a place for getting lost.

  After lunch we take it easy with free time back at the hotel or in the Souk, where hard-to-find bedouin jewellery can be sought in hidden rooms, and your art of bartering will be sorely tested. We then gather late afternoon to visit the beautiful Luxor Temple, one of the few that are open in the early evening. This unique temple encodes proportions derived from cosmic mathematics, hence why it looks and feels perfect. (Overnight in Luxor at the Pavillon Winter Hotel or similar)

  

  After a leisurely breakfast, we leave mid-morning for a visit to the Alabaster factory. After lunch, we'll go to Habu Temple, a well-preserved complex that is a bit off the tourist trail.

  We then travel across the Nile to enter the anomalous chamber of Thutmosis III in the Valley of the Kings. Unlike real tombs surrounding it, this one features a well (redundant for a dead person) and walls painted with the Book of the Hidden Chamber describing the process of ascent of the initiate. That's why we visit this one and not others.

  Upon returning to Luxor we board our wonderful Nile Cruise and settle in with a drink, dinner and magnificent view of the sunset.

  This morning you'll have time for an optional sunrise balloon ride over the ancient wonders of Luxor, or spend some free time in the markets.

  At noon, set sail and enjoy the afternoon and dinner on board our beautiful cruise ship. (Overnight aboard luxury Nile Cruise Ship)

  

  At dawn, visit Edfu Temple, one of the best preserved, thanks to the Greeks who rebuilt the site above the ancient east-west temple. The magical offspring of the resurrected god-man Osiris, Horus became symbolic of the path of the fully awakened initiate, the Heru (from which comes Horus), or as we know this word today, hero.

  After a relaxing sail, we visit Kom Ombu in the late afternoon. Kom Ombu is actually two temples: Temple of Horus, on the left or north side, represents the higher self; and Temple of Sobek, on the right, represents the contrasting lower self. An essential element of the initiatory experience. Each Nile temple was used to raise the initiate’s awareness through specific teachings; here the initiates swam with crocodiles in order to overcome fear and negativity, so don’t forget your swimming gear today.

  We will gather for dinner on board and enjoy another spectacular sunset.  (Overnight aboard luxury Nile Cruise Ship)

  

  After a leisurely breakfast on board your ship, a short boat ride takes us to the island of Philae and its temple, rescued from the rising waters of the Nile and lovingly rebuilt in its new location. Its ancient name P-aaleq means “end” and “creation”, thus it is one of the original mounds to rise above the waters of the flood 11,000 years ago. A truly ancient site, where the cosmic marriage of Osiris and Isis was consummated with a festival every winter solstice. We'll have lunch at the site and free time to take in the market and papyrus factory as well.

  Later this afternoon, head back to the ship for some free time. An alternate experience for today is an optional trip on a traditional felucca to Elephantine Island and its luscious gardens (approx $40 p.p.). A good way to reflect on your experiences so far, beneath shady trees. (Overnight aboard luxury Nile Cruise Ship)

  

  To complete our adventure, phase III puts us on an early morning plane back to Cairo. After checking in and relaxing a bit, we'll enjoy a Farewell Lunch (or dinner, depending on final schedule) at our beautiful hotel, Mena House.

  After some free time, we prepare for one of the greatest experiences in life: We finally reach the Great Pyramid, and with private access we descend along claustrophobic tunnels to the original chamber beneath the structure. Then ascend, following the original path of countless initiates in antiquity, up the Grand Gallery and into the Kings Chamber, completing our ascension (literally and metaphorically) with a guided meditation. Who knows what will pop out of those polished, megalithic red granite blocks.

  Return to Mena House, in time to pack your bags and relax before your departure tomorrow. A wonderful end to this profound journey. (Overnight in Cairo at the Mena House Hotel or similar)
