Meaning Behind Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It”
by Alex Hopper May 25, 2023, 9:00 am
Tina Turner had a storied career. She started her journey in music alongside Ike Turner, carving out a space in the R&B and rock scene. During the Turner’s tenure together, they released name-making hits like “Proud Mary” and “River Deep, Mountain High.”

Though she dabbled in various projects prior, Turner truly jump-started her solo career in 1984 with the release of her debut album, Private Dancer .
Among the track list for that album was the iconic ballad “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” It became one of her biggest hits and is still one of the first songs that come to mind when thinking of Turner.
In the wake of her passing , we have decided to look back at the meaning behind “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”
Behind the Meaning
Though Ike and Tina had an illustrious music career together, their relationship was far less favorable behind the scenes.
Turner was abused by her husband for the duration of their relationship, and though she ultimately divorced him, that aspect of her life was often part of the narrative when discussing her career trajectory.
Turner only took her stage name and two cars in the divorce (per Biography.com ).
After picking herself up and dusting herself off, Turner began to work on her comeback album, Private Dancer . The album featured the singles “Let’s Stay Together,” “Better Be Good to Me,” and – the topic of conversation today – “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”
The meaning behind “What’s Love Got to Do With It” is relatively simple. With her iconic belt at the forefront, Turner sings about the growing attraction between two lovers. The song, written by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle, takes the opposite approach to many other love songs, which often concern themselves with enduring relationships. Instead, Turner tells her lover that it’s purely sexual chemistry she is after.
It’s physical Only logical You must try to ignore that it means more than that
What’s love got to do, got to do with it? What’s love but a second hand emotion? What’s love got to do, got to do with it? Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
The song’s message seemed to be relatable enough given that the song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making Turner the oldest woman in history at the time to earn a No. 1 song (she has now been surpassed by Cher and Kate Bush ).
Though the song helped to solidify Turner’s standing as a solo artist, she originally had qualms with the track. “I was rock and roll,” she once explained . “That was a pop song.”
Nevertheless, Turner’s manager, Roger Davies, convinced her to try her hand at the pop ballad. After Turner “converted it” and made it more her own, it became the timeless hit that it is today.

Tina Turner’s ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ to Feature Even More of Simply the Best
By Kory Grow
Three decades ago, Tina Turner reclaimed her history with the soundtrack album for the movie What’s Love Got to Do With It. She re-recorded hits she’d originally cut with her abusive ex-husband, Ike Turner so that they could stand on their own as testaments to her survival. These included “Nutbush City Limits,” “Proud Mary,” and “A Fool in Love.” She was in her early 50s, her voice still sounded great, and the album became a hit. Now, the record will be even bigger when it’s reissued on April 26 as an expanded box set.
In addition to the original album, which also contained solo hits like “I Don’t Wanna Fight” (which premiered on the soundtrack) and the title track, the four-disc, one-DVD collection will feature a volume of single edits, remixes, and instrumentals, and two volumes with a full concert. The concert took place at San Bernardino, California’s Blockbuster Pavilion, on Sept. 15, 1993, and the box set includes the gig both as audio and on the DVD.

What’s Love? (1993)
The What’s Love? Tour was Tina’s first American tour since 1987 to promote the movie and soundtrack What's Love Got To Do With It about her life story. Originally intended as a North American tour only, Tina decided to add a few dates in Europe at open air festivals and some concerts in Australia and New Zealand. Shortly before the Australian leg, she performed also at the New South Wales Rugby League Grand Final in Sydney's football stadium, because she supported the Winfield Cup since 1989. In Adeleide, Ayrton Senna surprised her by showing up on stage during her concert, after Senna won the Australian Grand Prix on that day. Tina had already sung The Best , but decided to play it again as a tribute to him after he left the stage. The setlist was very similar to her previous Foreign Affair Tour , Tina added only her new hit single I Don’t Wanna Fight and the song „Legs,“ which she performed already at her Private Dancer Tour . Only at a few concerts, she performed some additional songs like Disco Inferno or „(Darlin') You Know I Love You.“

‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ Was Tina Turner’s Defining Hit. It Almost Didn’t Happen
W hen Tina Turner died on Wednesday after a half-century career full of legendary anthems, many remembered her as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” But the chart-topping hit for which she will perhaps be most remembered isn’t a rock song—and that fact almost got in the way of the song ever being released.
“What’s Love Got to Do With It,” which debuted in 1984, spent 28 weeks on the Billboard chart—including three at No. 1, making it one of just six top-10 hits from Turner’s solo career. The single went gold, and the album on which it appeared topped 5 million units sold; the song also provided the title for a Turner biopic of the same name, for which lead actress Angela Bassett was nominated for an Oscar.

But “What’s Love Got To Do With It” was different from Turner’s previous hits.
The singer, whose career launched in the 1960s and ’70s, first entered the limelight thanks to the success of her collaboration with then husband Ike Turner. The musical duo released songs like “River Deep-Mountain High,” “Nutbush City Limits,” and “Proud Mary,” which quickly became classics.
The end of their marriage, after years of domestic abuse that Turner went public about in the 1980s, followed closely on the heels of her having been dropped by her record label , Capitol Records. Turner credited David Bowie, who was also signed to Capitol, for helping her get re-signed in 1983. Turner then released her fifth solo album “Private Dancer,” which featured “What’s Love Got To Do With It” and launched a new, triumphant phase of her career.
But Turner originally had reservations about the song. “Did you know that when I first read the lyrics for ‘What’s love got to do with it,’ I rejected the song?,” Turner wrote in a 2021 Instagram post . The artist was wary about the fact that the single fit more into the pop genre instead of her typical R&B and rock and roll, even going so far as to call the song “terrible,” according to the 2021 HBO Documentary Tina .
“What’s Love Got To Do With It,” that documentary revealed, was only released after Turner’s manager, Roger Davies, pushed for Turner to meet music producer Terry Britten.
Britten collaborated with engineer John Hudson to rework the song to better fit Turner’s style, convincing her to sing it with a softer tone than the usual belt she was known for, the Washington Post reports . It worked: “What’s Love Got to Do With It” went on to win three Grammys—including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Originally released on June 15, 1993, What’s Love Got To Do With It was a commercial and critical success. The album was the soundtrack for the Tina Turner biographical film of the same name and reached No.1 in the UK, also making the top 10 in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Canada, and the top 20 in the US. The album went on to be a platinum record across the world, including the US, UK and Switzerland. It was a collection of songs, some of which were re-recorded from Turner’s ‘Ike & Tina Turner’ period, including “A Fool In Love,” as well as five brand new songs, one of which - “I Don't Wanna Fight" - became a top 10 hit in both the US and UK. The album also includes Turner's version of The Trammps' disco classic "Disco Inferno," a song she had often performed live in concert in the late '70s but never previously recorded in the studio. Two tracks from her 1984 breakthrough solo album Private Dancer are also included - the title track and a different re-mixed version of "I Might Have Been Queen."
Turner has sold over 200 million records and has had 10 UK top 10 hit singles and nine UK top 10 albums and was the first female artist to have a top 40 hit in six consecutive decades in the UK. She has won eight Grammy® Awards and has been nominated for 25. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame® in 1991 and has stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and St. Louis Walk of Fame. Her 1988 Break Every Rule tour broke the world record for the largest paying audience at a solo concert, with 184,000 at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, and Rolling Stone Magazine named her No.17 on the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and No.63 on the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

TINA TURNER
First released to coincide with the same-named 1993 biopic in which Angela Bassett very much “did the thing”, What’s Love Got To Do With It helped Tina Turner to wrestle back narrative control from her abusive ex-husband: half of its 14 songs are solo remakes of the classics such as Nutbush City Limits and Shake A Tail Feather that The Ike And Tina Turner Revue tore up the R&B circuit with.

Reaching stardom later in life: Tina Turner musical chronicles life of rock icon
Credit: CONTRIBUTED
Tina Turner, the empowering, vibrant Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, didn’t reach superstardom until she was 43. She was nearly 70 when she launched her final tour in North America and Europe. Age was just a number to the influential artist, whose troubled life and legendary career provides the dramatic, uplifting and incredibly tuneful foundation for “Tina — The Tina Turner Musical,” receiving its local premiere April 9-14 at the Schuster Center courtesy of Dayton Live’s Premier Health Broadway Series.
Rising to amazing heights as a bankable worldwide star and sex symbol during her senior years made Turner a rare commodity in the entertainment industry, but it also spoke to her determination and grit to succeed at all costs. Once she decided to leave her abusive husband Ike in 1976, escaping her Dallas hotel room with only 36 cents and a credit card, there was no turning back.
“She had an entire career — 16 years with Ike — where she wasn’t making a dime,” said Roz White, who portrays Zelma Bullock, Turner’s prickly, stern mother. “She got to wear some cute clothes but he never paid her. She didn’t have the benefits of the fruits of her labor. By the time she was in her mid-40s, she had to stay sexy, she had to stay strong, she had to stay visible and be somebody who could be a symbol in order to make her money. Sometimes we have to keep working. I just had my 600th show with ‘Tina,’ but I know what it’s like to still have dreams and goals that haven’t worked out yet because that’s just the (nature of the) business.”
White, whose touring and regional credits include “Dreamgirls,” “The Amen Corner” and “Seven Guitars,” praises Turner for having the confidence to step out of her comfort zone in her prime. Growing up in Washington, D.C., she recalls the reactions among the Black community in response to Turner’s transformation circa her 1984 platinum album “Private Dancer.”
“Tina was willing to ditch one look for a totally different look,” she explained. “I remember the older women in my life wondering why she was wearing blonde spiky hair and short skirts in her 40s. They wanted her to go and sit down somewhere. But Tina had to do it. It was her destiny. She also knew she had to continue to do it well into her 60s so people could see that it could be done.”
The early years
Born Anna Mae Bullock and raised in rural Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner had a rough childhood. She was the youngest daughter of Floyd, a sharecropper overseer, and Zelma. In 1950, when Turner was 11, Zelma unexpectedly left the family due to Floyd’s abusive behavior, relocating to St. Louis. At 16, Turner joined her mother after the death of her grandmother and would eventually meet Ike one fateful night at Club Manhattan.
“Zelma is a very complex character, but she’s important because we often see African American women portrayed in film and on stage as the nurturer; and Zelma was not happy in her situation,” said White, 54. “She did not have the happiness within herself to be a nurturing mother. There was no real bond between Zelma and Tina. I think it’s important to show there are all different kinds of women and all different kinds of mothers. And no matter what kind of mother, the relationship is still important because it defines everything in your life. The choices Zelma made, whether you agree or not, are the choices that allowed Tina a space to come to meet Ike. Pleasant or not, it was a part of her journey.”
White also admires how Turner’s life was the ultimate comeback story of overcoming adversity, breaking barriers and pushing through pain.
“Tina didn’t do anything calculated,” she said. “She literally lived her life. Her life was so full. She didn’t allow her circumstances to keep her in Nutbush or allow her circumstances to keep her with Ike longer than she needed to. It was an over 50-year journey for her to become an icon.”
Staged by Tony Award nominee Phyllida Lloyd — best known for directing the films “Mamma Mia!” and “The Iron Lady” — “Tina” features over 20 classics, including “Nutbush City Limits,” “River Deep-Mountain High,” “Proud Mary,” “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” to name a few. The magnitude of Turner’s timeless catalog, especially among her legion of fans, continues to energize the cast. Ari Groover and Zurin Villanueva notably share the titular role as well.
“There’s something about a show when the curtain goes up and you only see a woman standing in front of a staircase and the crowd goes nuts. And she hasn’t opened her mouth. That is power,” White said. “And that kind of power doesn’t happen overnight. And Tina’s power is still present with us even after her physical presence has left, which is huge. She’s more than a name.”
Turner, a best-selling performer and author (”I, Tina”) who sold more than 100 million records, was the recipient of eight Grammys, the Kennedy Center Honors, and two inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame among other accolades. She passed away on May 24, 2023, at age 83 in her home in Switzerland near Lake Zurich, but her legacy as an inspiration to generations of women will forever stand as a testament of her being simply the best.
“Tina did what she did so I could have a chance to do what I want to do in my 50s,” White said. “She also (inspires) the young women I’m on stage with who are in their 40s, 30s and 20s. We also have a couple of 10-year-olds with us. It’s all about legacy.”
