Really impressed with the Mustang Beta

I was gifted a 300i for Christmas, but since I have a 350r already, I melted it. I decided on a Mustang Beta package, which was an even trade. I just hopped into the hangar and WOW am I happy with my choice!

I wasn't expecting much, but the cockpit is really nice, and that little living area! It's got a bunk and a lounge with a viewscreen, usable toilet/shower, and so many cool details like the drawers you can open. I'm thinking you might even be able to carry a passenger, someone hanging out in the back while you fly, a very cool option for a "single seat" ship.

Any other Mustang Beta owners pleasantly surprised with the ship? I had been thinking my 350r would be my go-to personal transport craft, but now I'm not so sure - this little thing is great!

@ Zhane , I totally agree.  The Mustang Beta was exactly what I would expect from a starter ship in this complex universe that we will be playing in the next year or so.  I am glad you are enjoying your Mustang.

I love the design a lot. If I had to pick a starter again (if I just found out about SC right now) I would totally go for a Mustang.

I have all but the Gamma right now and I am looking forward to trying them all out.

It is quite cosy isn't it. Better than the Aurora's coffin (even with its space window).

I can also see new starters really enjoying and appreciating this ship.

If I had to buy another ship right now, it'd probably be the M-Beta.  I've got a mid-sized cargo vehicle in my DUR and a short-legged dogfighter in my 325A, but I don't have an efficient personal transport.  This little thing is awesome!  And it has a couch!

I tried flying the Beta during the free test flight week. I have to say that flying the Beta is much different than flying the Delta, which I already own. The Delta's flight characteristics are quick acceleration, highly responsive, and incredibly smooth maneuvering. Whereas the Beta is sluggish and has a weird habit of "stalling" mid-turn -- at approximately 60 degrees. When attempting a hard turn, halfway through the turn the ship will pause for a second or two, and then it'll continue turning again. This appears to happen when performing left and right turns, and pitching up and down.

It's possible that the Beta's strange turning characteristics are attributed to the increased mass caused by its living cabin. However, one would expect it would simply be slower to turn or it would drift (like the Super Hornet); but the strange turn-stall is unusual, and is likely a mistake that will be corrected in an update.

Another strange thing that I've noticed is that the Size of the Class-1 and Class-4 hardpoints are reversed from what they should be according to the brochure. In the brochure, the Beta's Class-1 wing hardpoints are supposed to be Size 2 and mount Size 2 CF-117 Badger repeaters. In the Hangar, the Beta's wing hardpoints are Size 1 and mount Behring M3A lasers. In the brochure, the Beta's Class-4 turret is supposed to be Size 1 and mount M3A lasers; whereas in the Hangar, they're Size 2 and I don't think they come equipped with any weapons. This is strange because it seems more logical that the Class-1 fixed hardpoint could mount a larger weapon, whereas the Turret would be limited to a smaller cannon.

This is also different from the Mustang Delta, which can mount Size 2 cannons in both the Class-1 and Class-4 mounts, and it is equipped as described in the brochure, with Badger repeaters on the wings and M3A lasers on the turret.

So there are definitely some inconsistencies with the Beta that need to be resolved.

@ Zhane how can you give up the 350r's speed for that thing!!

Much remains to be seen about the true nature of it's cargo and personnel carrying capacities though ><   I think that if it sacrifices all cargo for a second engine, it should go twice as fast, not 36% faster..

Much easier to aim with tho.

I'm wondering how I will adjust to flying a small to mid-sized multi-crew ship or even a cap ship.  It won't be made of paper, so I'll be ok not having near untouchable agility.  *Starts thinking about an Aquila and begins to drool*

I'm not getting rid of my 350, heh. They're sitting comfortably side by side in my hangar.

I really like the concept of the Beta, the interior layout and the just all around good work that went into it.

I unfortunately feel too confined in it (the only SC ship that actually is efficient with its use of interior space...) so I upgraded it.  I'll wait for a reskin of the 315P for a single seat explorer.

If I had to choose a non-combat Starter Ship, I'd probably go with the Mustang Beta over an Aurora variant. The Beta's interior living cabin might be a little tight, but it's like a studio apartment compared to the coffin-like sleeping berth of the Aurora.

The only problem with the Beta is that apparently it can't carry any cargo, so it's probably only suited for exploration, as mentioned in the commercial.

love mine so much that instead of upgrading to a delta I have both. the only thing I would change is to give it the gamma's paint job.

I love my Beta, i actually melted my old Delta for it even though i already had the 315p for exploration. It handles great and is fun fly, even in Vanduul Swarm, which makes getting out of tight spots, while exploring, easier.

I too once enjoyed the serene goodness of its utilitarian cabin space. I felt like a real lone space explorer. Too bad they ruined it now with this redesign.........  😭 😣
