This Can be Dangerous

I am a 52 year old active male and very competent in the water. I didn't know what to expect with helmet diving but was open to whatever it might bring. Unfortunately I think it nearly took my life. I see several risks inherent to this activity. One is that the helmet weighs 75 pounds. Another is that the helmet is strapped to you in the back. Therefore, in an emergency you cannot possibly shed the weight and get yourself to the surface. During my helmet dive experience the first thing I noticed was that with ten people walking on the ocean floor we kicked up a large amount of debris and created a dense cloud and were unable to see far or well. Also, since you walk into the water from shore you never get out to the reef and we only saw two wrasse. The dive master did try to pull a lobster out from under a rock and I saw its antenna but that was it. Worst, though, was I happened to be quite good at this due to experience with walking in a low position from martial arts training. When I put on the helmet and walked upright I found I was very top heavy and had to walk slowly but when I moved into a low position not only was I much more stable by lowering my center of gravity but I also could make much longer steps faster. Using that technique I was consistently in the front of my group. I moved fast enough that my hose became strained and I had to pull it a couple times. I attributed that to being near the bottom and needing to pull the float containing the air tanks. I'm not sure what happened but near the deepest part of our dive I felt I wasn't getting enough air. I didn't want to complain and thought I'd just monitor the situation because it was probably nothing. However, my breathing became more difficult and I became certain that my air supply wasn't working. It was at this time I began taking stock of the situation. I was about 15 or 20 feet underwater. My oxygen was not working and I was re-breathing the carbon dioxide in my helmet. I had a 75 pound weight on my shoulders. I must remain upright or the helmet will fill with water. The helmet is connected to a shoulder harness in the back. Someone else connected it and I don't know how to remove it. Therefore I cannot possibly get to the surface. I'm in really cloudy water and no one can see me so I can't signal for help. The dive master said there were one-way radios in the helmets and if I spoke he would hear me, so I started pushing away my rising panic and as calmly as possible said I thought my air was not working. The dive master would move ahead about 50 feet or so and then wait for us and check our status so I kept moving to try to get to the dive master. I don't know if there really is a radio or not but when I got to the dive master I was in real trouble. He asked if we were ok by giving an ok hand signal, I was still in front and signaled back NO! He gently grabbed my shoulders to let me know he was communicating with just me now and signaled "ok?" and I shook my head "no", I was talking too trying to tell him I had no air. Finally he reached down and placed his spare regulator inside my helmet and gave me a blast from hit. FINALLY AIR!! I felt sick and wobbly but ok enough to continue. The dive assistant followed me and kept his spare regulator inside the back of my helmet. I fought panic while we slowly (it seemed really slow to me) back toward shore. I don't remember ever being so relieved as when I stood up and my head broke the surface and that dreaded helmet was finally removed. After that I had the classic signs of oxygen deprivation with a severe pounding headache coupled with severe nausea. I tried to tell the dive master but he didn't appear to want to acknowledge any problems and brushed me aside. I sat on the beach for the next hour awaiting the bus back to the ship feeling very sick. At the ship I collapsed into my bed and slept for several hours and the symptoms were gone. I was glad to be alive.

I would like thank you for sharing with us your Sea Trek experience. We take reviews like yours very seriously and would like to address your highlighted concerns and issues. Firstly, the helmet weighs 72 pounds out of the water and becomes 15 pounds negative once in the water. The harness is attached to the helmet but the helmet is not strapped to you. In case of an emergency, participants can be unfastened and get directly to the surface if needed. It is protocol that all Sea Trek dives be led by a professionally trained guide to facilitate keeping the group together in a safe manner and in close proximity to the guide. At 20 feet when you reported not receiving enough air, it is our standard operating procedure that the tour is brought to a pause to address these concerns immediately. In this case the tour was paused and moved to shallower water where the air supply was verified, and found that there was 2000 psi with a continuous flow of air in and out of the helmet. We were pleased that after receiving assistance from the guide the tour was continued to the end breathing from the helmet. As customary, the guide remains in constant communication with all participants throughout the tour by using the standard hand signals briefed to each Sea Trekker before the dive. At the end of the tour it was noted that everyone came back with enough air. We are sorry to hear that your Sea Trek tour was not the best however, this experience is not synonymous to how this underwater adventure tour is conducted and enjoyed. Nevertheless, we are appreciative that you have taken the time to express your thoughts about this tour.

I hope that our experience is down to the weather, not inherently to the trip itself. There was something of a swell in the sea. You are led by your guide in pairs down quite a steeply shelving beach into the water. The sand is moving beneath your feet as the waves come in and out and it is awkward to gain a foothold in the sand. You can't look down to try to see where you are walking for two reasons: Firstly, if you tilt your head forward, the mask fills with water, although it clears again when you straighten up. Secondly, the visibility was so poor that you couldn't see your own feet anyway. After a moment or two of walking forwards, there was almost complete sensory deprivation. The sea bed and the surface were both out of sight and there was just the murky outline of the guide leading you forward. The upshot is that I was terrified of losing my footing and falling over in the swirling sea, so I aborted the walk and came out. Two other couples who were on the trip with us persevered, although when they came back to shore they said that they had seen just one fish between them. The staff did their best. They were courteous and helpful but can't control the state of the sea. This experience bore no resemblance to the description on the Sea Trek website or on the blurb available in our hotel. I'm sure other people will find this trip exhilarating and enjoyable and we just had a bad day - but do check the water conditions before you book.

We are sorry to hear that your experience was not what you expected due to the weather conditions. Unfortunately weather conditions are not something we have control over. We are pleased to know that the Sea Adventures Inc staff was helpful and accommodating. Lastly we thank you for taking the time out to share your experience with us, as these reviews are very valuable to how we run our operation. Many thanks for choosing Sea Adventures Inc as your tour provider.

This was a rather daunting activity for a couple of senior citizens (67)) and my husband wasn't nearly as enthusiastic about booking this as a shore excursion on our cruise as I was. I found it a lot of fun, however. The helmet is very heavy, and since I have back difficulties, I did have some soreness the day after. But it was worth it for the experience. We were well coached and well cared-for. We were with a group of six, and our leader kept good track of us as we walked on the ocean floor. I felt almost no fear except for a brief time when we were separated from the group, but the leader found us and led us back with no ill effects. We didn't see nearly as much sea life as I had hoped, but what we did see was fascinating--some sort of little spidery crab, a starfish, and a group of squid swimming. Those were the highlights. It seemed like we walked for a lot longer than the 25 minutes he said it would be, and I was tired at the end, but I enjoyed the experience very much. Since I need to have my eyeglasses to see underwater (quite nearsighted), snorkeling has always been disappointing for me, and this was a way to see better, and to use my underwater camera to record the experience. It was fun and I am glad I did it.

Went on this organised trip as when visiting St Lucia on a cruise January 2013. There were four of us in our party, all confident swimmers and not afraid of the water at all - one of us is a qualified diver. The induction was very informative and funny and water shoes/crocs (yuk) provided as well if you didn't have your own. Into the water two at a time - me and hubby went first. The helmets are really heavy and you need to take care to keep your head upright as instructed. All was fine and the kids then suddenly appeared alongside us. At this point I had some sort of meltdown and had to get out - the feeling was horrific and I was led to the shore by one of the dive team. I was like jelly. After me another lady came out - same feeling and then within seconds my daughter (the qualified diver) came out too. She said she didn't like not being in control of her air supply. Anyway, wimps aside the rest of the team went off walking around the bottom of the sea and we imagined they would come back with great stories of the wonderful things they had seen - not so. Apparently the visibility was so poor they couldn't see the person in front of them never mind anything else!! A great disappointment for everyone but obviously no one can second guess the sea conditions however the Sea Trek people must have known conditions were poor and as such I would have expected the trip to have been cancelled or something? Maybe I am being unreasonable. Suffice to say a complaint was lodged with the cruise company who provided the trip and we were refunded 50% of the cost as a gesture of goodwill. Personally I will never try anything like this again however other members of the party did say that they would assuming the conditions were greatly improved.

We are sorry to hear that your experience on the Sea Trek Helmet Diving tour was not in line with your expectations. Nevertheless, we are happy that you took the time out to express this to us in your review, as all reviews good and bad are very valuable to how we conduct our business. Sea Trek Helmet Diving is one of our newest tours and its popularity continues to increase throughout our land and cruise base clients. Unfortunately, we do not have any control over the weather and specific types of marine life you may want to encounter, however our guides are well trained and safety of each guided tour is paramount to our operation. We have noted your experience and hope that it does not ruin your desire to give it another go.

I had already felt that this adventure was extremely reasonably priced and after booking, found out that it also included resort pickup and admission to Pigeon Island! As we have a 13 year old son, we felt that this would be a good introduction to scuba diving. There was not a lot of marine life however, the experience was amazing! The sensation was like walking on the moon! What an Incredible thrill and amazing experience! Thank you!

The Sea Trek guides at Sea Adventures Inc are so happy that your experience with them was an amazing one. Our Sea Trek diving location Pigeon Island National Park is truly a double benefit in that it not only offers a reef to explore below but has a great deal of history on land to explore as well after your dive. We appreciate your review and hope that you encourage others to experience this wonderful underwater adventure.

wow... a bit dawnting and scary at first but amazing once your mask is on and your underwater its wonderful you can see the coral the fish eveything would recomend doing it once ... you will definatlty want to do it again and scuba man and his team are very helpful they explain everything you need to know and make sure you feel safe in and out of the water then you get a certificate at the end. this is for families with older children no under 10's as the mask is heavy and causes pressure on the shoulders not heavy in the water tho just feel like someone pushing on your shoulders.

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to send us such a lovely review. The Sea Adventures Inc team is thrilled that your experience was a good one. They work extremely hard to ensure all their customers walk away with smiles and good memories. We appreciate your recommendations to others.

I was a little nervous at first, but the people there were accommodating and were made me feel at ease. While on the bottom of the ocean, they continually would check to make sure you were ok. It was a great experience.

You Must Experience this Helmet Diving Tour!"

We chose Sea Trek, which was amazing!

We were the only 2 in the group that day, so it made the trip even more surprising since we had extra time in the water.

The Sea Trek staff was great! I would recommend this excursion!

The CLOCK IS TICKING

Birgit getting into the water with the help of her sea trek guides.

Although you will be able to enjoy the many advantages of dealing with local family-owned business, it does have one severe downside.

With most of our clients coming from the cruise ships, which bring in around 20,000 cruise visitors daily, we get booked up lightening fast seven days a week.

Which means you now have a crystal clear choice

You can either take your time to ‘think about it’ – only to come back later and find your choice of day has now been made, so you either have to miss out entirely or settle for a trip with another Sea Trek tour company, where you probably won’t enjoy the personal attention of a family member.

Maybe even have to pay extra for soft drinks, and water – and struggle to understand your guide’s broken English.

Gary and his family taking a picture inside the water.

You can make the smart move and immediately decide about which day you want to take your tour on and instantly check if we are still available.

Then, once you’ve made your booking, you can relax, enjoying the warm feeling of knowing you’ve made a wise choice and start to plan your trip to make it a truly FIVE STAR memory that you’ll always cherish.

Sounds like it an easy choice to make, so my family and I are really looking forward to meeting you and showing you our beautiful island first hand!

Alberto Novelo

Chief guide, the summary of the tour.

Tia enjoying her first sea trek tour in Cozumel.

Why should the best be reserved for others & not you?

Haven’t you worked hard to afford this trip to Cozumel and so don’t you deserve the best that is on offer?

Because we focus on giving you the highest possible personal experience, seamlessly delivered by our uniquely qualified and highly experienced fluent English speaking guides, we are strictly limited to a few Sea Trek Excursions a day.

I’d hate for you to be disappointed and miss out on your chosen day, so I urge you to check availability right now, and then go ahead and book your Sea Trek Tour…

I’ll leave the last words to Elliot Swenson …

With that said, the experience was refreshing. I would do it again. The tour guides were always right there underwater with you.
