Profiles & Route Baloise Belgium Tour 2023

Profiles . From the 14th to 18th of June the riders take on the Baloise Belgium Tour , a race that is very popular among those preparing for the national championships, Tour de France but also the stage for an internal battle among the vast Belgian peloton.

The five-day stage-race is a classic for Belgium and features stages for all types of riders, as long as they don't wish for long climbs. There should be three stages that are almost certain sprints and to decide the overall classification there will be a 15-kilometer time-trial and an explosive circuit hilly day.

Profiles & Route Baloise Belgium Tour 2023

With just under 1000 meters of climbing, the rolling opening stage of the Baloise Belgium Tour will take the riders through a four-lap circuit in Scherpenheuvel-Zichem where the first yellow jersey will be taken, likely in a bunch sprint.

Stage 2 of the race sees the riders head towards the Atlantic ocean and the pan-flat roads of western Belgium. From Merelbeke to Knokke-Heist, the sprinters will likely have another opportunity in a day that can be dangerous with it's exposure to the wind.

Stage 3 of the race should be the most crucial one for the overall classification, as meaningful gaps can be created in the individual time-trial. Pan-flat, but in 15 kilometers it is possible to take quite a lot of time for such a small race. It may not decide the race, but into the hilly day there will be a clear set of rider who will have the advantage.

Stage 4 is as explosive as it could be. The town of Durbuy hosts the start and finish to this hilly day and the whole stage consists of a circuit around it's rolling hills. 2Km at 6% and 1Km at 6% will are the details of the two main climbs in the circuit that come with around 10 kilometers to go, but the finale itself is tough with the final 900 meters featuring ramps of over 10% towards the line.

The final day of racing sees the riders back into sprinter country, this time in the capital of Belgium and the headquarters of the European Union. Stage 5 of the Baloise Belgium Tour should end in a bunch sprint in the city of Bruxelles.

Weather at the start/finish city of Brussels at 1:55 PM, local time: 23C (72F), rain showers in the vicinity. The wind is from the southeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is a 53% chance of rain.

The race: Team Baloise-Trek Lions did not start because their bikes were stolen during the night.

Here's the report from stage winner Fabio Jakobsen's Team Soudal Quick-Step :

Soudal Quick-Step concluded the 92nd edition of our home race on a high, with Fabio Jakobsen picking up the team’s 23rd stage victory at the Belgium Tour after delivering a pitch-perfect sprint not far from the Atomium, the symbol of the famous Expo ’58.

Thanks to a superb job of his teammates, the European Champion found himself in an ideal slot as he rounded out the last corner with 300 meters to go, and unleashed a brilliant sprint in the last 150 meters – a massive acceleration that couldn’t be matched by any of his opponents, who were left fighting for the minor placings on the podium.

Just like Remco Evenepoel twenty-four hours earlier in Switzerland, Jakobsen dedicated his victory to Gino Mäder, with whom he has fond memories from the 2021 Vuelta a España: “This one was for Gino. I thought a lot about him these past couple of days and during today’s stage. I had this picture of us together on the final podium of the Vuelta, both with our distinctive jersey after a hard race. He will be missed for sure, by everyone, but especially by his family and friends.”

“I’m happy with the two wins I got this week in Belgium. The preparation went well, and this makes me satisfied. The legs are getting better and better and the confidence is there, which is important as I get closer to my second half of the season goals”, added the 26-year-old Dutchman.

Casper Pedersen was another Soudal Quick-Step rider on the podium in Brussels, thanks to his third place in the general classification – just ahead of Yves Lampaert – which came on the back of a solid time trial and a day on the attack on the queen stage of the race.

“It was a really nice week for us here. Our primary goal was to be successful in the bunch sprint with Fabio, but we also raced for the GC. To get two victories and to see how well we worked together makes us happy. Taking third and fourth in the standings shows that we can be up there also on the hard days. It was also great to have Michael here, not only that he has a wealth of experience, he gives some great tips during the stages and knows how to calm things. I can’t wait to race together with him at the National Championships next weekend”, said Casper after his first ever top three finish in a stage race.

Weather at the start/finish city of Durbuy at 1:55 PM, local time: 27C (80.6 F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from Casper Pedersen's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Casper Pedersen is on track to become the first Danish rider in 50 years to finish in the top three overall at the Belgium Tour, after a solid and gutsy ride on the fourth stage of the race, which took in numerous short but hard climbs around Durbuy.

Soudal Quick-Step was in the spotlight from the very beginning, controlling the gap of the escapees and remaining at the front even after the attackers were reeled in, with more than 60 kilometers to go. Fifth at the start of the day, Casper put in a probing attack a couple of kilometers later, and then tried to organise the chase behind lone leader Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), once the Dutchman went clear.

The 27-year-old, victorious this season at the Figueira Champions Classic, put in a strong effort as he tried to reduce the margin, and despite not getting any help from the other riders in the group, he continued to leave everything out there. At the end of the stage, he was rewarded for this with a place on the podium, which catapulted him to third overall, just ahead of teammate Yves Lampaert.

“We knew that today would be the hardest stage of the race, a decisive one for the general classification. We were really motivated and I felt from the start I had really good legs. Stan and Jannik followed the first moves, while Michael, Fabio and Tim kept myself and Yves in a good position. It was some great team work.”

“In the end I found myself part of a select group together with Yves and we just raced. The tactics of the group were frustrating, because nobody wanted to try and go for the win, but I went full gas on the climb with 30 kilometers to go and tried to do my best. Being on the podium of both the stage and GC isn’t bad at the end of the day. All our attention now will shift to the final stage, where we’ll try to help Fabio”, said Casper in Durbuy.

Weather at the race city of Beveren at 2:05 PM, local time: 27C (81F), sunny, with the wind from the northwest at 5 km/hr (3 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Yves Lampaert's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Yves Lampaert made it three consecutive days with a Soudal Quick-Step rider on the podium at our home race. After Fabio Jakobsen finished runner-up on the opening stage and then took the spoils twenty-four hours later, Yves showed his prowess against the clock in the 15.2km individual time trial that reshuffled the general classification.

Eighth overall at the start of the day, the two-time National Champion of the discipline produced a solid effort to average 52.56km/h and claim runner-up in Beveren, just twelve seconds behind Søren Wærenskjold (Uno-X), who took the victory with a time of 17:09.

As a result, Lampaert made a significant jump in the standings, up to third, just ten seconds behind first place. He is joined in the upper part of the ranking by teammate Casper Pedersen, another Soudal Quick-Step rider to impress in the time trial, which he concluded eighth, thus moving to fifth place.

“I had a very good start, but in the last four kilometers I really began to suffer and couldn’t keep the pace I had in the beginning. I can’t say I am disappointed, just that I would have liked to be closer to victory. All the riders with GC ambitions here wanted to do well in the time trial. We have two riders in a good position ahead of stage four, when we hope to be again up there”, said Yves.

Weather at the finish town of Knokke-Heist at 2:00 PM, local time: Sunny, 23C (73F) with the wind from the north-northeast at 21 km/hr (14 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Fabio Jakobsen's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Fabio Jakobsen powered to Soudal Quick-Step’s 27th victory of the year in convincing fashion after a sensational lead-out of his teammates and moved into the leader’s jersey ahead of the race’s individual time trial in Beveren.

Crosswinds, tricky corners, crashes and an uphill drag to the line – nothing could stop the Wolfpack Thursday afternoon in Knokke-Heist, where the second stage concluded after several local laps. Consisting of Yves Lampaert – whose three seconds scored at the Golden Kilometer sprint moved him in the top 10 overall at the end of the day – Casper Pedersen and Michael Mørkøv, Soudal Quick-Step dominated the finale in Knokke-Heist.

Jakobsen came out of Mørkøv’s wheel with just 150 meters to go, after another magnificent lead-out of the experienced Dane, and gave no chance to his opponents, taking by a clear margin his fourth victory since the start of the season.

“Today was hectic with that crash that took place in the last kilometers, and I hope that all the guys involved are ok. We were at the front when it happened, and it’s thanks to the team that I was so well-positioned, I am really grateful to them for their fantastic work. In the sprint, I went early, as I didn’t want to get boxed in, and a quick glance over my shoulder showed me that all was good and I had a comfortable gap. The leader’s jersey is a nice bonus, I hope that they have a big size skinsuit for me to wear during Friday’s individual time trial”, said a smiling Fabio, who also holds the points jersey.

Plato's Apology

Weather at the start/finish city of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem at 2:05 PM, local time: 26C (79F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Fabio Jakobsen's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

What should have been a relatively easy and quiet day in the saddle turned into a mad stage in the last 80 kilometers, when several riders – taking advantage of the small climbs spread on the course and the narrow roads which made organising a chase a tough task – took off from the peloton and joined the original group up the road.

Our team pulled hard behind to reduce the gap, and as soon as only a handful of seconds separated the two groups, Casper Pedersen jumped from the bunch and joined the leaders, making it ten men at the front. Their maximum gap stood at 40 seconds, but the move was a real threat for the peloton, where more teams began contributing to the pace-making in the hope they would bring back the attackers.

They eventually did, in the last four kilometers, but only after the Golden Kilometer sprint, where Casper Pedersen showed how strong he is by taking six bonus seconds which could become vital in the final outcome at the end of the week. Yves Lampaert then closed a late acceleration which tried to fool the sprinters’ teams, while Fabio Jakobsen expertly surfed wheels in the hectic finale in Scherpenheuvel-Zichem. The European Champion kicked out with 150 meters to go and came close to winning the stage, less than a wheel separating him from Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who took the win.

Thanks to the bonifications scored on the line, where he nabbed his fifth podium of the season, the Dutchman sits in the top five overall, alongside teammate Casper Perdersen, ahead of Thursday’s Knokke-Heist stage, which will give the fast men another opportunity.

“It was a very fast first stage. As soon as the attacks began, the race didn’t stop anymore. We managed to close the gap, and Casper had a great day, bridging across to that group, which allowed us to remain calm in the peloton. He had a good chance in case they would have made it, but everything came together and we got a bunch sprint instead. Fabio did a good effort, he showed he is on an upward trajectory and he will get other opportunities to show what he is capable of”, said Soudal Quick-Step sports director Tom Steels.

As it happened: GC riders battle out stage 8 in summit finish sprint

Mathieu van der poel wins baloise belgium tour.

Fabio Jakobsen triumphs with second stage victory on final day in Brussels

Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal-QuickStep) was the fastest in the final bunch sprint on stage 5 at the Baloise Belgium Tour . The Dutch sprinter captured his second stage win of the five-day race, this time ahead of Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Thibau Nys (Trek-Segafredo) in Brussels.

Jakobsen dedicated his victory to Gino Mäder, with whom he has fond memories from the 2021 Vuelta a España, saying, “This one was for Gino. I thought a lot about him these past couple of days and during today’s stage. I had this picture of us together on the final podium of the Vuelta, both with our distinctive jerseys after a hard race. He will be missed for sure, by everyone, but especially by his family and friends," Jakobsen said.

“I’m happy with the two wins I got this week in Belgium. The preparation went well, and this makes me satisfied. The legs are getting better and better, and the confidence is there, which is important as I get closer to my second half of the season goals.”

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) wrapped up the five days of racing, winning the overall title. He moved into the purple leader's jersey following the stage 3 time trial and extended his lead after winning the previous day's stage 4.

Van der Poel sealed the overall title by a margin of 40 seconds over Søren Wærenskjold (Uno-X) and Casper Pedersen (Soudal-QuickStep).

How it unfolded

The final stage 5 at the Baloise Belgium Tour was a 194km race in Brussels. It began with an opening large loop with two intermediate sprints, and then the peloton travelled toward the two 40km closing circuits before the finish line in Brussels.

Baloise Trek Lions did not start the final day of racing after thieves stole their bikes and wheels overnight.

A breakaway of seven riders set off within the first 20km of racing that included Alex Colman (Flanders-Baloise), Stefano Gandin (Corratec-Selle Italia), Andrea Pietrobon (Eolo-Kometa), Kay De Bruyckere (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal), Lucas Janssen (Beat), Kobe Vanoverschelde (Tarteletto-Isorex), and Thimo Willems (VolkerWessels).

The riders gained over a minute on the field led by Alpecin-Deceuninck and Soudal-QuickStep as Colman rolled through to take the points in the first intermediate sprint in Schepdaal. Colman also won the intermediate sprint in Grimbergen at the end of the first of two final laps.

In the final 20km, Colman, De Bruyckere and Janssen were dropped from the break while Willems, Vanoverschelde, Pietrobon, and Gandin held a slim eight seconds on the peloton.

Back together in the closing kilometres, six riders crashed with 9km to the finish line as the teams with strong sprinters organised their final lead-outs.

Alpecin-Deceuninck were the first to start their lead-out for Philipsen but were soon rivalled by teams Soudal-QuickStep and Lotto Dstny in the last three kilometres. In the end, it was Soudal-QuickStep that delivered Jakobsen to victory – his second of the week and 43rd of his career.
