AIDAmar starts world cruise in Hamburg

October 27, 2022 – Yesterday evening, at 20:00pm sharp, AIDAmar set off from Hamburg on its first world voyage.

With a lap of honor and a spectacular turning maneuver in front of Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, Captain Felix Rothe offered the guests and crew on board a very special start to the 117-day circumnavigation of the world. Pure emotions and goosebumps for all globetrotters who are full of anticipation for their XXL adventure.

Guests can look forward to dream destinations like Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Ushuaia and Chile look forward. The AIDA fleet has been sailing the world's oceans since 1996 and has been very successful on the German cruise market with a casual and informal concept. AIDAmar staterooms

The comfortably furnished staterooms are cheerfully colored and offer comfort when traveling. The interior staterooms are 13.5 sqm in size, while the oceanview staterooms are between 14 and 16.5 sqm in size. The balcony staterooms offer with 17 to 23 sqm (including balcony) enough space for everything needed on board. Depending on the category, the suites on board are between 28 and 87 sqm in size (including private sundeck). Only the panorama suite does not have a balcony, but a large panoramic front.

Atmosphere on Board

On board, guests of all ages feel comfortable. Travelers appreciate the informal and friendly atmosphere aboard the AIDA ships. A varied program as well as many sports activities offer entertainment on board. Although a lot of variety is offered, there is always a quiet place where guests can retire with a good book or a delicious cocktail, the everyday life behind. A good place for a sundowner is the sail-covered Anytime Bar, which becomes a meeting place for all night owls in the evening.

Of course you will also find a large outdoor area for jogging, ball sports and courses. AIDAmar is a family-friendly ship with an extensive on-board programme and a relaxed atmosphere. Aidamar opens 2024 season in warnemünde: big party at the cruise quay.

Next Sunday, April 14, 2024, AIDAmar will open this year's cruise season in Warnemünde. The Baltic seaside resort in the north is the home port for AIDA Cruises, the market leader in the German cruise industry based in Rostock and is therefore a special port of call for the Kussmund fleet. AIDAmar and AIDAdiva will make a total of 69 calls this year from April 14 to November 4. This means that almost half of all cruise calls in Warnemünde during the 2024 season will be made by AIDA ships. AIDAmar in particular will be calling at Warnemünde regularly this year - a total of 40 times during this year's cruise season. AIDA guests can set sail for Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Poland or discover the Baltic and Scandinavian countries on either 3- to 5-day or 7- to 12-day voyages. AIDAdiva makes 29 calls during the season. AIDAdiva departs from Warnemünde on 7-day voyages to Norway, but also to Sweden, Poland, Denmark, Finland and Estonia. In October, there is a 4- and 5-day trip to Scandinavia. Special tours are the 12-day trips to the Baltic States to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland and Sweden. A special highlight in 2024 that cruise fans should definitely make a note of: Both ships will dock in Warnemünde at the same time a total of five times. This concerns the calls on June 8, July 6, August 24, September 21 and October 31, 2024.

AIDA season highlights 2024 in Warnemünde

AIDA Cruises is also involved in several events in Warnemünde in 2024: During the Hanse Sail (August 8-11), AIDAmar (August 9) and AIDAdiva (August 10) will be on site. AIDA Cruises is a sponsor of the largest maritime event in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which attracts up to one million visitors every year. At the Rostock Cruise Festival in September, which AIDA also supports as a sponsor, both AIDA ships will even be on site at the same time on September 21. Other events include the Rostock Chamber of Industry and Commerce Fair on April 18, 2024, where prospective trainees can find out about apprenticeships from around 90 companies in the region in the form of speed dating on AIDAmar, and a children's concert will take place on AIDAmar on October 17 as part of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.

Shore power in Warnemünde

For AIDA Cruises, the use of shore power is an important contribution to reducing the ships' local emissions. This is because it allows the cruise ships' main engines to be switched off while they are docked and the on-board systems to be supplied with energy from shore. Nine out of eleven AIDA ships are currently shore power capable, including all ships in the AIDA fleet that will be setting off on cruises to the North and Baltic Seas from German ports this summer. For the port in Warnemünde, this means that shore power is planned for all 69 calls by AIDAdiva and AIDAmar, even on the dates when both ships are in port. The first double supply took place last year: On April 16, 2023, AIDA Cruises celebrated a special premiere with the double call of AIDAsol and AIDAmar in Rostock-Warnemünde, as both ships were connected to the shore-side system in parallel for the first time. Germany is a pioneer in Europe when it comes to the provision of shore-side power. Europe's first shore-side power plant in Hamburg Altona has been in regular operation since 2017. This was followed in 2021 by Kiel and Rostock-Warnemünde, whose systems were also opened with an AIDA ship.

Cruise tip for the weekend: Big party to kick off the season this weekend

The season opening on April 14, 2024 with AIDAmar will be celebrated with a big party around the Rostock-Warnemünde cruise terminal: Together with the traditional ship Santa Barbara Anna, a three-master, AIDAmar will create a real seafaring atmosphere. The port party on the central pier starts at 11 am. The festive highlight will be the "cast off" of AIDAmar in the evening, accompanied by music, on its way to Gotland and Stockholm.

Aida cruises: new 2023 summer itineraries in the north available // bookings start on august 3, 2022.

For the 2023 summer season, AIDA Cruises is launching new itineraries for the cruise ships AIDAdiva, AIDAmar and AIDAnova. A variety of attractive northern travel options is now available. The new cruises can be booked starting on August 3, 2022.

AIDAnova from Kiel

For the seven-day voyages "Baltic Sea from Kiel" or the 14-day voyages "Norway and Baltic Sea" with departure dates between May 6 and October 21, 2023, AIDA Cruises has developed new attractive itineraries to Norway and Denmark for its guests.

In Norway, AIDAnova guests will experience the charming capital of Oslo with its innovative architecture, museums and newly developed neighborhoods, as well as sun-drenched Kristiansand with its old town of Posebyen, where the white wooden houses reflect the sunlight. Numerous sights and urban lifestyle await guests in Denmark's capital Copenhagen. In Skagen, on the other hand, visitors are attracted by endless beaches and the country's largest shifting sand dune, from which only the tower of the silted-up parish church still peeks out. Only here can you swim with one leg in the Baltic Sea and the other in the North Sea.

AIDAmar from Warnemünde

On its nine- and ten-day cruises, AIDAmar will now sail on attractive routes to Scandinavia or to Norway in the 2023 summer season. For example, three Nordic capitals - Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm - are on the schedule, as well as calls in Gothenburg, Aarhus and Visby. On the new voyages to Norway, guests will visit three different fjords - Eidfjord, Olden and Vik - as well as Bergen, Skagen, Kristiansand and Gothenburg.

AIDAdiva from Warnemünde

From May 6 to October 14, 2023, AIDAdiva will receive a new summer program.

On four travel dates (06.05., 08.07., 05.08. and 2.9.), AIDAdiva will now tour the beauties of Norway. Among other things, a visit to the tranquil port of Vik on the Sognefjord is included in the program. The country's longest and deepest fjord stretches 204 kilometers inland from the coast north of Bergen.

A new feature in the program are 4- and 5-day trips in the Baltic Sea region. Apart from the popular classics Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Gothenburg the guests can become acquainted now with Gdansk/Gdynia, Fredericia or Bornholm for the first time in the context of a short voyage with AIDA.

The four 7-day voyages "Sweden, Poland & Denmark" with departure dates of July 1, July 29, August 26 and September 23, 2023, remain unchanged.

Both the 7-day cruises and the new 4- and 5-day voyages can be combined with each other and thus offer a wide choice of itineraries for the start and destination port of Warnemünde.

AIDAmar Sets Sail on World Cruise, Bookings Open for AIDAsol’s 117-Day Sailing

AIDA Cruises’ AIDAmar has set sail on its 117-day world cruise from Hamburg this week, and bookings for the AIDAsol’s world cruise in 2024 are now open, according to a press release.

The AIDAmar begins its long journey from Cruise Center Altona and will return to Hamburg on February 20, 2023, according to the company.

“For many, the world trip is a long-awaited life-long dream. As captain of this special journey, I am delighted to be able to contribute to the fulfillment of this wish together with my crew. Unforgettable moments await our guests both ashore and on board,” commented Felix Rothe, captain. AIDAmar.

The cruise line offers a second 117-day itinerary onboard the AIDAsol for travelers who were unable to reserve a spot on the AIDAmar world cruise The vessel will depart Hamburg on October 23, 2024 and return to the German city on February 17, 2025, and bookings for the cruise are now open.

From Hamburg, the ship will travel to the Canary Islands and South America, calling at ports in Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Tierra del Fuego before arriving in Chile. Tahiti and New Zealand are next on the itinerary.

The AIDAsol will then depart for six different Pacific destinations at the same time, providing guests with a comprehensive New Zealand experience. Guests on the world cruise can visit the ports of Napier and Christchurch/Lyttelton, as well as the Milford Sound passage. The trip to New Zealand then continues with stops in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, and Picton, while it moves to Mauritius, South Africa, and back to Hamburg via Australia, with stops in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide.

Visits to Lyttelton/Christchurch, AIDA’s new port in Napier, New Zealand, Tauranga, Melbourne, where guests can celebrate New Year’s Eve, and Uturoa are among the cruise highlights.

Rates for the 2024-2025 world cruise begin at 14,445 euros per person, double occupancy, with early bird discounts available until April 30, 2024.

But it’s really heartbreaking as well for me and for all of the fans of Taylor Swift.” “The concert itself being canceled is sad, but also we’re really thankful that the men and women who were tracking this, caught it before anything major could have happened.”

Just as she was boarding her flight at Boston Logan International Airport headed for a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, Mary DePetris excitedly checked the online fan group, Swiftie Nation.

Austrian authorities had discovered a terrorist plot targeting Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in the city, she read. On Wednesday, just before takeoff, organizers canceled all three shows. Ms. DePetris, 47, stepped onto the plane and broke the news to some of her fellow passengers.

“Half the plane was crying,” Ms. DePetris said. “It’s not just about the shows, it’s the community coming together and feeling safe at her concerts, and Swifties letting their guard down. And this just shifted all of that,” she said. “How can we do that now that we feel we are targeted?”

As the estimated 200,000 people who had been expected to worship at Ms. Swift’s proscenium in Vienna grappled with crushing disappointment, wasted money and a measure of fear at narrowly avoiding danger, a sea of fans flooded the baroque city looking for ways to shake it off.

They traded Eras merchandise in the shadow of the vacant stadium, or dissolved into tears when they caught the strains of Ms. Swift’s stanzas drifting from the doorways of sympathetic gift shops or churches. Some hung handmade friendship bracelets — a treasured Swiftie talisman inspired by a song lyric — on a tree on Corneliusgasse, a central Vienna thoroughfare whose name echoes the title of Ms. Swift’s song “Cornelia Street.” There, hundreds hugged, cried and commiserated in the middle of the road.

Tempering the dejection for many was a feeling that a missed concert was far from the worst outcome possible. On Thursday, Austrian authorities released information on the two teenagers they say planned to attack , outlining a picture of a terrorist assault designed to kill as many people as possible with machetes and explosives, plotted by the pair who had become radicalized by Islamic extremism on the internet.

One had recently started a job for a events service provider that was working at the Ernst Happel Stadium, where Ms. Swift was scheduled to play, according to Franz Ruf, a senior Austrian security official. The suspect, who the authorities did not name but said was 17 years old, was arrested there on Wednesday.

“I feel grateful to be alive,” said Charlotte Keller, 34, a human resources manager from Rome outside the stadium on Thursday.

Ewald Tatar, a manager at Barracuda Music, which organized the Austrian leg of the Eras Tour, said in a news conference that the decision to cancel the concerts was made together with Ms. Swift’s management, based on the information received from authorities.

“Although it was not an everyday decision, it was definitely the right one,” Mr. Tatar said, citing the fact that one of the suspects was an arena employee as a deciding factor. According to Barracuda’s website, all tickets would be automatically refunded within the next two weeks.

In an essay for Elle magazine from 2019 , Ms. Swift said her “biggest fear” was the potential for an attack on one of her concerts. “After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting, I was completely terrified to go on tour,” she wrote, referring to terrorist attacks at concerts in those cities in 2017 that killed a total of 82 people and wounded hundreds of others.

Ms. Swift wrote at the time that she worried about keeping “3 million fans safe over seven months,” during her Reputation Tour. Her Eras tour will be three times as long, with more than 150 shows over two years that one company estimated could generate $4.6 billion in North America alone.

Ms. Swift has not yet commented publicly on the situation.

Inside the 16th-century Lutheran City Church in Vienna on Thursday, a group of teenagers from the Czech Republic sat in a pew, inconsolable. A sign outside said, “Dear Swifties, we sympathize,” and Ms. Swift’s song “August” blasted through the sanctuary: “I can see us lost in the memory,” she sang. “August slipped away into a moment in time …”

The girls sang, too. And they sobbed.

“We came here carefree,” said one, Katherine Penkavova, 18. “And now we face danger,” she added. The girls leaned their heads down on the back of the pew. “At least we can sing our feelings here,” Ms. Penkavova said.

The city tried its best to dry the floods of tears.

Listings of palliative events popped up almost immediately. Vienna’s Albertina museum and municipal pools offered Swifties free entry, while Austria’s national railway offered refunds on unused train tickets. A dance party called “Shake It Off” invited fans to come dressed in their sparkly concert best. A restaurant offered free flutes of pink sparkling wine for every crushed concertgoer.

For some the concerts had meant more than a silly, good time, including Eliya Briand, 22, and her sister Naomi, 24, who arrived in Vienna on Thursday from Netanya, just north of Tel Aviv, seeking a reprieve from Israel’s war in Gaza. Now thousands of miles from home, the sisters felt they were facing the same fear.

“It has been a really, really difficult year, and this concert was sort of an escape from the reality at home,” Eliya said.

Her sister Naomi said they had come “from war, from terror — and now we meet it again.” She added, “For this concert to be canceled because of that specific reason, it hurts a lot more.”

Some, like Teng Yilin, 22, were making the most of the situation — while blinking back the occasional tear. Ms. Yilin flew in for a single day from Shanghai to live her dream of seeing Ms. Swift live. She arrived before dawn on Thursday and was scheduled to leave around midnight. She got the news about the cancellation on the plane, but didn’t believe it until she saw people crying when she landed.

Wandering Vienna lost in grief before dawn, Ms. Yilin and her boyfriend were taken in by a group of Swifties, some of whom had come from as far away as South Africa. They bought her beers, she said, and the bar owner played Taylor Swift songs.

“At the beginning, it was sad, but after a few hours we were laughing,” Ms. Yilin said. “I’m heartbroken,” she added. “But I think it was still a good night.”

It was still too early to assess the economic fallout from the canceled concerts. The Austrian Hotel Association offered its members legal guidelines to manage an expected influx of cancellations, but Oliver Schenk, a spokesman for the organization, said that he had received conflicting reports.

“It is not yet possible to say how high the financial loss is for the companies,” he said.

Outside the stadium on Thursday, there was no coveted Eras merchandise for sale. Vendors began to pack up tubs of uneaten wurst and untapped kegs of Austrian lager.

Stefan Schneider, 48, the owner of Arena Cocktail Catering, said he had spent 10,000 euros, about $11,000, on hotel rooms for 60 staff members he brought in from Germany for the three-day event, plus another 10,000 euros in cocktail ingredients. The event would have accounted for 30 percent of his yearly income, if all had gone well, he said. He added that he had no insurance.

“It’s a disaster,” Mr. Schneider said, but looming larger than that was his fear that other concerts could be under threat. “It’s a problem. You have thoughts, what about the next event? What about disaster after disaster?”

Next week, the singer’s global tour is scheduled to begin a run of five sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium, a 90,000-seat arena in London. A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement that there was “nothing to indicate that the matters being investigated by the Austrian authorities will have an impact on upcoming events here in London.”

With all the tickets for the London gigs snapped up and further tour dates fixed through December, it was unlikely that the disappointed Swifties in Vienna would get to see the singer soon.

And without a concert to prep for, they flooded the city.

The Spanish Riding School tours appeared sold out on Thursday, and braceleted people queued for tickets to Schönbrunn Palace. Mozart and Taylor Swift songs competed for earspace across its winding streets. Alex Januschke, a waiter at Cafe Tirolerhof, said he had spent the afternoon managing tables of disconsolate fans.

“My advice?” he said. “See the city!”

Kapitän der AIDAmar ist Felix Rothe. Er ist seit 2008 für AIDA Cruises tätig und seit 2018 Käpitän in der AIDA Flotte. Zuvor war er bei der Bundesmarine und hat Nautik an der Hochschule Bremen studiert.

Die AIDAmar wurde 2012 in Dienst gestellt. Sie ist baugleich mit ihren drei Schwesterschiffen, der AIDAblu , der AIDAsol und der AIDAstella . Sie bietet Platz für maximal 2500 Passagiere zur Erholung, Entspannung oder einfach als Erlebnis.

Restaurants und Bars sorgen für kulinarischen Genuss. Dabei können Sie aus einer Vielzahl an Restaurants wählen, die für Sie inklusive sind. Wer es etwas ausgefallener mag, kann dazu in die etwas nobleren Restaurants gehen, um ein außergewöhnliches Esserlebnis zu genießen.

Dazu gibt es allerlei Attraktionen wie Casinos, Kino oder Theater und spektakuläre Live-Shows, die Sie rund um die Uhr unterhalten und keine Wünsche übrig lassen. Langeweile kommt hier garantiert nicht auf! Auch für Kinder wird einiges geboten, damit die kleinen Spaß haben und rund um die Uhr beschäftigt sind.

Wer es sich gut gehen lassen will, gönnt sich eine der vielen Wellness-Angebote, wie Massagen, Saunen oder Dampfbäder. Dabei bieten die Innenkabinen die preiswerteste Möglichkeit, um auf der AIDAmar mitzufahren. Außenkabinen bieten einen tollen Blick auf die See oder die angesteuerten Häfen. Balkonkabinen machen dieses Erlebnis noch fantastischer und Deluxe-Kabinen bieten gar eigene Sonnendecks und weitere Annehmlichkeiten.

Die Kleiderordnung an Bord ist ungezwungen und sportlich-elegant. Flip-Flops und Badekleidung sollten jedoch nur im Poolbereich getragen werden. Abends darf es dann etwas eleganter sein mit Jeans und Hemd für den Mann und einem schönen Sommerkleid für die Dame.

Die Innenkabinen sind 13,5 Quadratmeter, Außenkabinen 14-16,5 Quadratmeter groß und die Balkonkabinen bieten 17-23 Quadratmeter Platz inklusive Balkon. Die Deluxe-Suiten haben 87 Quadratmeter inklusive Sonnendeck von 50Quadratmetern.

When is the Del Mar Wine + Food Festival?

The Del Mar Wine + Food Festival takes place October 2-7, 2024, with the Grand Tasting October 5-6. Doors open for VIP ticket holders and early entry at noon, general admission opening at 1 p.m.

Where is the festival located?

The event is held at Surf Sports Park , formerly the Del Mar Polo Fields, at 14989 Via de la Valle, Del Mar, CA 92014.

What are the different ticket options?

General admission.

One-day general admission tickets are priced at $165, while the two-day pass goes for $265. Both options grant you unlimited food and drink during the Grand Tasting from the festival’s selection.

Will I see any celebrities at the event?

Of course! The DMWFF will be hosted by Food Network and San Diego Magazine ’s own Troy Johnson ( Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives ; Guy’s Grocery Games ). Returning to the DMWFF are Wave FC’s Alex Morgan , former pro footballer Drew Brees, and pro surfer Rob Machado. Celebrity chefs such as Aaron May, Benito Molina, Catherine McCord Claudette Zepeda, Claudia Sandoval, Javier Plascencia, and many more will be featured in events throughout the festival. Other guests include Kyle Cooke of Bravo’s Summer House , as well as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia ’s Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, and Charlie Day.

Are children and pets allowed?

As this is a 21+ event, children and pets are not allowed, with the exception of service animals.

Is there a dress code?

While there is no formal dress code stated, it is recommended to show off, it being Del Mar and all. But no need to worry about getting tuna crudo all over your best shirt. Semi-casual wear is welcome, too.

Where can I park?

Surf Sports Park offers plenty of parking at $20/day. Utilizing designated drivers and rideshare services are highly recommended, especially if you plan on drinking. Public transportation is also available in the area.

What public transportation options are available?

The bus route 308 drops passengers off at Via de la Valle and Caminito Porta Delgada. If that’s still a little far for you, the COASTER commuter train meets at the 308 route at the Solana Beach stop.

What hotels are nearby?

For those looking to invest in an overnight stay for the Del Mar Wine + Food festival, hotels like the San Diego Marriott Del Mar, Residence Inn Del Mar, and the Residence Inn La Jolla are all close to the Surf Sports Park.

Will there be live music?

Yes! More information on live music and DJs will be posted on the festival’s website and socials .

What cause does the Del Mar Wine + Food festival ticket support?

The Del Mar Wine + Food Festival has once again chosen to partner with Feeding San Diego , who focus on distributing food and alleviating hunger within the San Diego area . Portions of the tickets and proceeds will be donated to this organization.

When is the last day to buy tickets?

Tickets are sold day-of, so long as they aren’t sold out at that point. However, that doesn’t mean you should wait until then. Secure your tickets ahead of time to make sure you don’t miss out on this event.

Take a tour of the Narwahl, an active U.S. Coast Guard cutter docked at Corona del Mar Saturday

The U.S. Coast Guard invites the public to tour the Narwahl, an 87-foot cutter, and learn what it’s like to live and serve aboard the vessel on Saturday in Corona del Mar.

The event will be hosted at the Coast Guard’s station in Newport Harbor, 1911Bayside Drive. Guided tours of the Narwahl are scheduled to take place between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

When the 87-foot cutter it isn’t responding to emergencies along Southern California’s Coast, it conducts inspections and patrols, Coast guard officials said in a news release. The vessel’s commanding officer, Capt. Annabella Farabaugh, will be on hand to talk to visitors about what it’s like to serve at sea and share insights from her career in the military.

Members of the public can also learn about volunteer opportunities with the Coast Guard.

Saturday’s event was put together with support from the military branch’s Auxillary Division 6, which is made up of over 200 uniformed volunteers in six flotillas serving Dana Point, Newport Beach, Orange Coast, Huntington Harbor, Seal Beach and North Orange County.

Street parking will be limited, so visitors are advised to arrive early to ensure a spot on a tour.

Chef angie mar celebrates fashion designer bach mai at restaurant le b.

Fashion designer Bach Mai burst into tears following a speech by chef Angie Mar this week, at Mar’s luxe restaurant, Le B.

Guests at the event to honor Mai included famed ballet dancer Misty Copeland and “Avatar: The Way of Water” star Bailey Bass.

Mar said she thought about the parallels between haute cuisine and haute couture when arranging the four course meal with OpenTable.

“It is so much an expression of one’s creativity and one’s soul in its purest form, before we get into the economics and whatever of it all. It is the truest expression of one’s self,” she said. “Bach, you do that so well everyday.”

Mai’s work has been worn by Venus Williams, Heidi Klum, Lucy Liu and Tessa Thompson. The designer will show at New York Fashion Week in September.

Mar went on to call the designer — who was born to Vietnamese immigrant parents in Texas before going on to work at Oscar de la Renta, and under John Galliano at Maison Margiela in Paris — “the epitome of the American dream.”

“Your father is so proud of you,” Mar said.

Mar’s own grandparents arrived in America from China.

Jessica Wang, Debby Soo, socialite Sharon Coplan Hurowitz, RéVive Skincare CEO Elana Drell-Szyfer, and Kate Lanphear also attended the dinner that included a menu of Tasmanian sea trout, salmon and roast duck.

Mar, who formerly was behind the Beatrice Inn restaurant, has teamed with Masterclass for its G.O.A.T series, and shows off how to make the perfect gourmet burger in streaming courses.

Feel the love in the very heart of Russia

In Russia, all roads lead to Moscow , on account of the city's status as the national capital and its importance throughout history. If geography were the deciding factor, however, the Siberian city of Omsk would be the point where all Russia's roads converge—it's located literally in the heart of the country, approximately as far from Vladivostok as it is from the Belarusian border. Omsk boasts a spate of exciting attractions, even if you simply make a stop here as you ride the Trans-Siberian Railway eastward or westward.

Marvel at Assumption Cathedral

Orthodox architecture never gets old, even if you've been traveling in Russia for a long time. This is particularly the case when it comes to the Assumption Cathedral of Omsk, whose gold-and-turquoise domes look resplendent under the blue skies that bless Omsk during the warmer months of the year. The cathedral was built in 1891 under the orders Nicholas, the last Tsar of Russia.

Time Travel at Omsk Fortress

The bad news? Much of what was once Omsk Fortress is now a residential area, with the only notable landmark that still stands being Tobolsk Gate (think Paris' Arc de Triomphe , but yellow and smaller). The good news? There's essentially no reason for a military fortification to exist in today's peaceful Omsk, which means you can stroll amid parks and cafés and imagine the area being war-torn—a small sacrifice to make in exchange for not being blown to bits.

Go Green at Ptich'ya Gavan'

Or white, as it were: Omsk is covered with snow several months of the year, which means that its prized Ptich'ya Gavan' central park is often more of a winter wonderland than the green reprieve you experience in summer. The park is popular with local families, to whom you can say "Privet" (Hello) as you walk past.

Walk on Omsk's Artsy Side

Although the building that houses Omsk District Museum of Visual Arts is unmistakably Russian, the collection you find inside is surprisingly eclectic for a city deep in Russia's interior. Recent collections have included a revival of Van Gogh's great works, among others. This is a particularly enjoyable Omsk attraction on cold winter days, when temperatures can drop far below freezing and sunshine can be rare.

Though Omsk is a relatively large city, the skies over it become dark enough in the evening for stargazing. While visitors are not permitted to use the expensive telescopes housed inside, exhibits inside the museum provide a fascinating look into the cosmos, narrated by expert astronomical guides.

Lenin Street's name is appropriate: Although it's the high street of a city thousands of miles from Moscow, the European-style architecture and cosmopolitan vibe you feel as you stroll past its boutique and cafés evokes the capital of Russia more than its forlorn interior. Local specialties you can purchase here include rustic jams made from local berries (and even, in some shops, cedar cones), as well as handmade rugs from Kazakhstan, which sits just south of Omsk.

Speaking of unique Siberian food, it's not just preserves made from the fruits of evergreen trees. Omsk is a great place to discover the flavors of Russia's wild interior, whether you eat zagutai and stroganini (Siberia's take on sushi) or classic Russian plmeni dumplings filled with decidedly Siberian ingredients, such as bear and rabbit meat. Vkusno ! (That's Russian for "delicious"!)

Enjoy Historical Houses—While You Still Can

The wooden houses that line Nikolskiy Prospekt aren't protected, but they should be. Historical structures that are unfortunately in a state of disrepair, these houses are slated for demolition at some unspecific point in the future. Be sure to catch a glimpse of these historical house before they're gone. There will, however, be at least one left standing for a long time. The Omsk State Art Museum is in a traditional wooden house.

Go to the Circus

Omsk State Circus is a popular spot for local families, whose children love the opportunity to see acrobatic performances and animals that wouldn't otherwise make appearance in Siberia. If you do attend a show here, keep in mind that ethics with regard to animal treatment might not match up with those in North America or Western Europe, to say nothing of the smell that can pervade the auditorium during and even after a show.

Be a Drama Queen

While there's no guarantee that any shows will be playing at Omsk Drama Theater at the time of your trip, a visit to this 19th century building is a spectacle in and of itself. While not as huge, say, as Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, it's nonetheless an ornate architectural wonder that hearkens back to a glorious time in history. The interior of the theater is even open during the daytime; ask the person who's inside if any tours are available when you turn up.

Explore Cities Deeper in Siberia

Siberia starts in Omsk, even if you can't continue far into it. If you don't plan to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway, take one of two day trips from Omsk. Travel to Tobolsk, whose hilltop Kremlin is one of the most picturesque in all of Russia, and whose beauty inspired a photo by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that ended up winning several awards. Or visit Tomsk, where you'll find a botanical garden dedicated to Siberian flora, and a museum that celebrates wooden architecture.

Ride the Trans-Siberian Railway

The idea of leaving Omsk behind can seem difficult, especially now that you've gotten to know this city in the heart of Siberia as well as you have. The mint-colored facade of Omsk Railway Station will make you smile, however, even if you're crying inside as you depart. Though it's not quite on the mid-line of the Trans-Siberian route between Moscow and Beijing , Omsk is a worthy starting place to begin a journey to either. If you head east make sure to stop in Irkutsk , the home of Lake Baikal and another underrated Siberian city.
