Sri Lanka’s rich culture and history, gorgeous landscape and scenery, and plentiful wildlife-spotting opportunities are the main reasons the country tops many travelers’ bucket lists. And due to its relatively small size, many of the best attractions and destinations are within only a couple of hours of each other. In one day, if you’re on a tight schedule, you could spend the morning at one of the country’s eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, go on a safari in the afternoon, and then in the evening, relax and enjoy a cup of tea from one of the hill country plantations. Or, with more time, allow the opportunity for spontaneous exploration—road tripping throughout the country offers scenic views almost everywhere, and you might pull over for an elephant sighting or two along the way!

Kandy, a major city in Sri Lanka’s hill country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations and one corner of the country’s Cultural Triangle. It’s surrounded by mountains of rainforest and tea plantations and is home to a beautiful lake within the city. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred temple that houses Buddha’s tooth; wander the city’s colorful streets, and admire the architecture while sampling food from the many street vendors; walk around the lake for scenic views of the lake itself and also the colorful buildings that dot the hillsides around it; and make the quick drive outside of the city to the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens to visit its orchid house and its spice garden, the latter of which will take you on an olfactory tour of the country’s native spices. 

This massive rock formation is not only a breathtaking sight to take in as you approach, jutting up from the flat lands that surround it but also a place of cultural and historical significance. The UNESCO World Heritage site was a fort and palace that dates back to the fifth century. A network of winding staircases and paths will lead you to the top of the rock if you’re game to do the 1,217-step climb. Along the way, you’ll get panoramic views of the valley around you, you’ll pass ancient paintings by monks on the rock walls, and learn about the kingdom that once called this rock home. If you plan on making the entire climb (which we highly recommend), arrive at the park at opening time—you’ll avoid the afternoon heat and beat most of the crowds.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, one of the three corners of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and the current capital city of the North Central Province, was the first ancient capital in Sri Lanka, thriving for more than 1,300 years until it was abandoned in 993. Tourists visit this UNESCO World Heritage site to explore the well-preserved ruins and significant Buddhist history. Several dagobas, distinctive dome-shaped memorials, remain in the city, one of which is said to house Buddha’s collarbone. Another important site is the Bodhi tree found in the Mahamewna Gardens —it’s the oldest known human-planted tree in the world, and it grew from the southern branch of a sacred fig tree in India, the tree under which Gautama Buddha was said to have gained enlightenment.

Polonnaruwa

The third corner of the Cultural Triangle , Polonnaruwa became the second capital after Anuradhapura was abandoned. Like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is a draw for visitors interested in touring the city’s history and ruins, including those of the royal palace and other royal spaces, the quadrangle (a raised, walled-off area of monuments and Buddha statues), and dagobas. You’ll undoubtedly spot many monkeys (toque macaques) in the area, and that population of native, endangered monkeys was featured in Disney’s nature documentary, “Monkey Kingdom.” 

Yala National Park

Yala National Park, located along the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is the most visited national park in the country, primarily because of the chance to spot the leopards in the area—it is home to one of the largest concentrations of leopards in the world. (The land became a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and then a national park in 1938.) Although it comprises five blocks, only two of them are open to the public for safari to preserve and protect the majority of the land. Between February and July is the best time to visit; during these months, the lower water levels bring more animals out in the open searching for water. However, the park can get crowded in these peak months, and higher traffic through the park can lessen your chances of spotting one of the elusive leopards. Even so, you’ll still have the opportunity to see elephants, crocodiles, and water buffaloes.

Minneriya National Park

Sri Lanka has plenty of safari opportunities, but Minneriya National Park is known for having the world's largest gatherings of Asian elephants. Previously an elephant sanctuary, the land was converted to a national park in 1997, and Asian elephants still freely roam the grounds in large herds. While you'll likely get a glimpse of several whenever you visit, the dry season from June to September is the best time to visit. This is when the elephants (sometimes as many as 300) will congregate around the reservoir. It might be most famous for these elephant sightings, but the park is also home to more than 170 species of birds, leopards, monkeys, and other wildlife.

Many tourists skip Colombo to set off for the country’s beautiful nature destinations, but the capital city deserves some of your time . Colombo comprises several distinct neighborhoods that showcase the old and new—from ancient temples and colonial architecture to modern skyscrapers and city parks. It’s easy (and recommended) to wander and simply take in the sights as you go. One impressive architectural sight you won’t be able to miss is the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid (also known as the Red Mosque), a red and white mosque in Colombo’s Pettah neighborhood. Admiring it from the outside is intriguing enough, but if you want to go inside, ensure you’ve dressed appropriately; women need to cover their hair, arms, and legs. 

This fortified old city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka is another of the country’s impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of the best things to do is walk along the fort’s ramparts that give you a view out to the water and inward toward the fort and city. You can also take a self-guided tour of the fort to learn about its history and architecture. Although the fort is the main attraction for visitors to the area, Galle is a prime destination for shopping as well; wander the pedestrian-friendly streets to check out the many art galleries, upscale markets, and boutique stores selling clothes, jewelry, souvenirs, and home goods.

Nuwara Eliya

Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest exports, so a trip to the rolling hills of tea country is well worth your time. Nuwara Eliya boasts hundreds of acres of tea plantations and several tea production facilities you can visit to learn about the entire tea-making process, from planting to picking and steeping at home. Once you’ve had your fill of tea, be sure to explore the other gorgeous surroundings of Nuwara Eliya, such as the manicured and well-maintained Victoria Park, Lake Gregory for a day on the water, or a lakeside picnic, or the beautiful, 350-foot tall Ramboda Falls.

As one of the main beach destinations in the country, Mirissa attracts those looking for a laid-back, leisurely vacation of days lounging on the sand and nights out on the town. Among the gorgeous beaches in Mirissa, Mirissa Beach and Secret Beach are two of the best for their beauty and seclusion, but neither one gets too crowded. If you’d rather be out on the water, Mirissa is a surfer’s paradise, especially from October to April, and it’s also a popular destination for whale watching tours to spot blue whales. Sri Lanka is an amazing travel destination offering a wide range of places to visit and things to do. This island, located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of India, presents visitors with an incredible array of environments and tourist attractions to enjoy and experience.

This relatively compact island boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites where that history is preserved. The best places travelers can trace the island's fascinating history, from ancient times through the colonial period to the present, are in cities like Colombo and Kandy .

Incredible outdoor landscapes and safari experiences can be found in the country's large elephant- and leopard-filled national parks, like Yala, Minneriya, and Udawalawe. Sri Lanka is also a beach-lover's paradise , ringed by some of the world's most beautiful beaches, and home to a number of luxury beach resorts.

The Hambantota area is the best place to visit for a resort vacation experience. This is also one of the best places to visit for families, as many of the resorts are all-inclusive and there is a lot to see and do without having to leave the property.

When planning a Sri Lankan adventure, keep in mind that the country experiences its rainy season from May through August, making December through April usually the best time to visit. The shoulder season, September, October, and November, is a good time to visit as well.

The capital city combines modern urban amenities with the country's colorful indigenous and colonial history. As a key stop on the world spice trade routes, Sri Lanka has long held strategic importance for European trading powers.

The country has been a colony of Portugal, the Netherlands, and most recently the British, and all these cultures blend with the Indigenous culture to form a wonderful hybrid. You can taste these influences in the food, see them in the architecture and the arts, and you can really feel them in Colombo.

Too many visitors simply use Columbo for its international airport (CMB) and immediately head out to the resort areas on the coast. The city is well worth a visit of at least a few days, even if you plan to head to a beach resort.

The city is also filled with museums and other things to do that can help connect you with Sri Lankan culture. Colombo sits on the coast, and there's a large green space and beach area right in the heart of the city separating an area called Fort from the Indian Ocean. It's the city's public playground and a fun place to visit, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

The city's new mega-tower, the Colombo Lotus Tower , is a great place to visit. The tallest free-standing tower in Southeast Asia, it provides amazing views of the city. Aside from indoor and outdoor observation areas, there's a fancy restaurant at the top and a popular food court in the mall at the tower base.

Kandy is where you go to learn about and experience Sri Lankan history. Located in central Sri Lanka, the city is the former capital city of the Sri Lankan royal dynasty, the country's main capital before the colonial period.

The high point of what's called the "Kandian Era" was between the 15 th and 18 th centuries, when the area remained independent while most of the coastal regions were colonized by European powers.

Be sure to visit the city's National Museum of Kandy , as it illustrates the story of the region and its people via exhibits and artifacts. Nearby, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a very holy Buddhist shrine, part of the royal palace complex. If you visit in August, there is a huge festival celebrating the temple and relics.

Kandy Lake is at the heart of the city and offers a peaceful refuge from the heat. There are hiking paths that circle the lake, dotted with temples and shrines. Venture out to the nearby suburb of Peradeniya and its amazing Royal Botanical Gardens.

Kandy is surrounded by mountains, which are home to many tea plantations. Some can be visited and offer tours and tea tastings. It's also surrounded by rainforests. The Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a forest park located within the city limits. The forest reserve has miles of hiking trails, as well as an excellent nature center with educational information.

This large wildlife park is in the southern part of the country, about an hour's drive from the resort area of Hambantota. The terrain and environment vary, as the park is on the border of the country's wet and dry zones.

Visitors to the park can see elephants, as there's a large population of them, along with crocodiles, water buffalo, and more. In fact, it's one of the best places in the world to see elephants in the wild outside of Africa .

There are leopards there, too, but they can be very hard to track or spot. There are also monkeys and a large assortment of deer and small mammals. It's also an excellent place for bird-watching.

There are some small accommodations and guesthouses across from and even inside Udawalawe. You can also visit as a day trip, the best times to visit are very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon.

The city of Galle is about a two-hour drive from Colombo via one of the country's first modern superhighways. This ancient trading port reflects its colonial history and is focused around a large, 17 th -century seafront fort.

Galle Fort is an entire preserved walled town, now filled with boutique hotels, shops, and restaurants (along with real residents). The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is a great place to explore on foot – the entire Fort area is car-free. It's hard to get lost, as you're surrounded on three sides by the sea. It's one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka for families, as the area is compact and filled with tourist-centric businesses.

Aside from and outside the fort, the city is surrounded by some amazing beaches . Like others in the country, the wide sand beach leads into clear, turquoise water. There's even a beach right beneath the iconic Galle lighthouse.

Only 90 minutes from Colombo, this beach is all about water sports, surfing, bodyboarding, snorkeling, and scuba diving. All the gear is easily available for rent from one of the beachfront stands. It's one of the country's most popular surfing areas , with the best waves between November and March.

The beach is large, so it never feels too crowded. There are a lot of beachfront stands selling all kinds of delicious local street food and a good number of small hotels and guesthouses if you want to stay overnight. It's also becoming home to more beach resorts, catering to foreign visitors with appropriate levels of luxury and amenities.

It's also known for its coral. The Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary is a preserved marine area and part of Hikkaduwa National Park , located just off the shoreline. It was created to protect the area's coral reefs and educate visitors about coral. It can be explored on a guided boat tour or even by snorkeling.

Sri Lanka's version of LA's Venice Beach and NYC's Central Park isn't the place to get away from it all, but it is the place to relax, people watch, and have some fun with other Sri Lankans, whether it's day or night.

Aside from the beach, there's a large grass area where people picnic and play games. For the best energy, visit on a Friday or Saturday night. Come hungry, as every night there is a market with incredible street food to enjoy.

You can enjoy the beach and water or maybe fly a kite in the ever-present wind. You can play some football (soccer) or cricket as there are always pick-up games going on. The beach is fronted by vendors and restaurants, and the area beyond it is filled with hotels ranging in price from budget to luxury.

Be sure to visit the historic Galle Face Hotel, a beachfront colonial remnant that first opened in 1864. Galle Face Green is in the heart of downtown Colombo, just in front of Fort. You have the skyline behind you and the sea in front of you. It's the area between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean.

Located on the island's southeast coast, this national park is known for leopard safaris . Leopards are very rare, but the park has a large population and it's possible to spot them even on a day trip. The park is also home to a large population of Asian elephants, which are endemic to Sri Lanka.

Aside from the fauna, the park is home to some incredible, varied environments and ecosystems. You can visit the marine and beach environment of the coastal areas, follow leopards across vast grasslands, or explore tropical rainforests.

There are also some important Buddhist temples and shrines within Yala, which is not far from the resort area of Hambantota.

A visit to Anuradhapura, one of the country's ancient capitals and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rewards visitors with a glimpse into the past. The area is unique, as there's a thriving, modern town adjacent to an ancient one — you're not just visiting ruins. The current population makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth (starting in the 4th century BCE).

The ruins are awesome, with many crumbling temples, statues, pools, and other structures. There are modern structures, too, and the temple remains an active place of worship. The core of the complex is a very old tree. The Sri Maha Bodhi is believed to be the world's oldest living tree planted by a human.

Anuradhapura is a fun place to visit, as there are a lot of small guesthouses and cheap places to eat, along with bike rental, tour guides, and other businesses catering to tourists.

This is an important ancient city ruin site, another one of the country's World Heritage Sites . Pollonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's second capital city, after Anuradhapura, thriving about a thousand years ago.

The garden-city is completely preserved, although most of the structures are in ruins. There are gardens, palaces, and temples, and while it's rather compact, it's best explored by bicycle. A bonus, the ruins are inhabited by a large troop of macaque monkeys, also residents of the area since ancient times. Duran Duran fans will recognize the site, as their Save a Prayer video was filmed here in the 1980s.

There's a small, modern town a few miles from the ruins, with guesthouses, bike rentals, cafés, and other tourist services. The town is close to Minneriya National Park, a great place to elephant-watch.

As an island, Sri Lanka is surrounded by beaches, and there really is something for everyone. For a diverse range of beach experiences, head to the Tangalle area. It's in the center of the southern coast of the island and is a popular resort destination.

You''ll find a wide range of beaches, from tropical coves to wide, windswept, seemingly endless stretches of open sand. You can also find beaches with services, vendors, and beachfront stands, as well as remote beaches where you're almost certain to find yourself alone.

At Rekawa Beach , just east of the town, there's a big sea turtle nesting area and conservation center.

This national park and wetland sanctuary, with its dunes, lagoons, and large freshwater bodies of water, is one of the world's best places to visit for bird-watching . There are many species of birds here; some are endemic to Sri Lanka. Many of the birds migrate here seasonally from as far away as Siberia.

Aside from the birds there are many crocodiles, which like to eat the birds, as well as a large population of elephants. The beaches are a popular place for four of Sri Lanka's five species of sea turtles to lay their eggs.

The Bundala park area is along the southern Sri Lankan coastline between Kirinda and Hambantota.

Sometimes it's as much about the journey as it is about the destination. An example of this is Ella, a small, hill-country town set among Sri Lanka's lush tea plantations. It's filled with small guesthouses, amazing food, and very friendly people. It's a fun getaway from the city or a way to enjoy a few days of leisurely hiking in the countryside.

A big reason people visit Ella is to ride the train from Kandy. Slowly, it winds its way up and down hills, through small towns, across green tea fields, until finally arriving in the small mountain town after about six hours. The ride is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world . You can also start the journey in Colombo, which adds three hours to the trip.

Another one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka that's also all about the journey is Adam's Peak. This mountain is topped by a sacred rock formation, and pilgrims traditionally climb to the summit at night in time to watch the sunrise.

The popular hike (which is great for families and children, too) generally takes about three hours, and there are rest stops and food vendors along the path. After the hike, you'll be rewarded by seeing a rock with a footprint-shaped indentation where some believe Adam made his first step. Others believe it's the footprint of Buddha, and some believe it was made by the deity Shiva.

The Adam's Peak hike begins in the village of Nallathanniya in central Sri Lanka. The best times to make the climb are between December and May when the weather is somewhat mild.

Like Machu Picchu or Masada, Sigiriya impresses visitors just with the absurdity of its construction. It's a huge rock formation that's been carved and transformed into a palace. The ruins are near the town of Dambulla in the central part of the country.

Built about 1,500 years ago, the palace complex sits atop a 660-foot (220-meter) rock with sheer walls. Those walls have ancient painted frescoes and carvings transforming the whole structure into a work of art. In the middle of one rock wall, there's a giant gateway carved in the shape of a lion.

Aside from the palace above, the area below is an intricate city complex with gardens and residential and commercial areas. It's a very important surviving example of early city planning from this era.

If you're looking to see elephants in their natural environment, Minneriya National Park near the town of Polonnaruwa , is the best place to go. The lush, protected landscape means the park is a dry-season (May through September) feeding area for the elephants who live in the region's forests. The park is in Sri Lanka's Dry Zone, which sees far less rainfall than the other parts of the island.

Minneriya is a much better option to see elephants than some of the country's elephant orphanages and sanctuaries, which can be tourist traps that mistreat the animals. Various operators offer full- and half-day jeep safaris where you can explore the vast space. You could also visit the park on a day trip from Colombo; it's about three hours away by car.

If you want to visit lovely Sri Lanka, you’re in luck! This gorgeous south Asian island lies south of India, and offers a wealth of natural and man-made attractions. 

As well as breathtaking beaches and delectable dining, Sri Lanka offers a wealth of historic and spiritual sites, botanical gardens, tea plantations, lakes, and waterfalls.

There’s also a variety of terrain including jungle, mountains, rainforest, and grasslands. Plus, there are cities and national parks just begging to be explored.

From Colombo to ancient Sigiriya, lakeside Kandy, colonial Galle, Ella in the highlands, Yala National Park, and the tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya, this is how to spend 10 days in Sri Lanka.

Day 1: Colombo

Best for: Temples

Where to stay: Shangri-La Colombo

It’s worth spending a couple of nights in Colombo, as I recently did, before setting off on your Sri Lankan adventure.

To be honest, my primary motivation was to recover from the jet lag before continuing our travels!

It’s a great opportunity to see the sights of Sri Lanka, although I wouldn’t recommend more than a couple of days in Colombo.

Things to see and do in Colombo include the historic Hindu Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Temple and the National Museum of Colombo, which showcases the island’s rich heritage

I’d also recommend a visit to Gangaramaya Temple, which fuses various architectural styles. While the observation deck at Lotus Tower offers spectacular views.

Foodies will love the street food along Galle Face Green. Plus, the city has a variety of venues where you can tuck into a scrumptious afternoon tea. 

Don’t miss a wander around Independence Square, a shop at Pettah Market, or a chance to see the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid, aka the Red Mosque.

You can also go boating at Beira Lake, and the Buddha statue at Viharamahadevi Park is worth seeing too.

How to get from Colombo airport to the city

As the principal gateway to Sri Lanka, you’ll arrive on the island at Bandaranaike International Airport in Negombo. It’s around 20 miles, or 33 kilometres, north of the city. 

The simplest way to travel between the airport and the city is to pre-book a private airport transfer.

Days 2 to 3: Sigiriya

Best for: A spectacular site

Where to stay: Water Garden Sigiriya

Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most significant historic places. Locally, it’s often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world.

A 180-metre granite peak dominates the surrounding jungle, and the Ancient City of Sigiriya is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. 

A huge lion’s mouth made from brick and plaster spews out a series of staircases and galleries, thereby providing access to the site.

It was built on the steep slopes by King Kassapa I, between 477 and 495. Sigiriya is open daily, and tickets include entry to the Sigiriya Lion Rock Museum.

If you want to enjoy it in peace and capture the best possible pictures, I’d recommend visiting as early as you can.

The site opens at 6.30am, and around 7am, it usually offers ideal levels of natural light. 

How to get from Colombo to Sigiriya

You can reach Sigiriya by train, or by car. There are no direct buses. The nearest rail station is Habarana, and you can travel from Colombo Fort station in the city. 

Train tickets are available in first, second, or third class, and the trip takes around four hours and 20 minutes.

First class tickets are very affordable, and this is the most comfortable way to travel. You can also book private transfers by car or by minivan.

Day 4: Kandy

Best for: Rich history

Where to stay: The Kandy House

Kandy is one of the best known names on the island. It’s an inland city in central Sri Lanka, and idyllically set among mountains, rainforest, and tea plantations.

Kandy’s attractions include the lake of the same name, also known as Bogambara Lake.

Spend time in Kandy and you can take a scenic wander by the water, and visit Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Tooth, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world.

It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, and is said to house a tooth from Buddha.

Kandy also offers old colonial buildings, lovely botanical gardens, and the huge Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue in the hills.

How to get from Sigiriya to Kandy

It takes around two-and-a-half hours to travel between Sigiriya and Kandy . Once more, private transfers offer great value for money.

Day 5: Nuwara Eliya

Best for: Tea plantations

Where to stay: Goatfell by Teardrop Hotels

If your visit to Sri Lanka wouldn’t be complete without visiting tea plantations, then you must head to Nuwara Eliya at some point during your stay.

This region strikes an idyllic balance between the English countryside and the tropics – though the climate is cooler than on much of the island. 

Touring the tea plantations of the area is the number one thing to do in Nuwara Eliya, and doing so can teach you all about tea production. You also get to taste the tea, of course!

Other Nuwara Eliya attractions include Gregory Lake, once a British-built reservoir; Victoria Park with playgrounds, train rides, and floral displays; and colonial and Hindu architecture such as the Post Office and Seetha Amman Temple.

You’ll also find a botanical garden, waterfalls, strawberry farms, viewing platforms, and Horton Plains National Park in the surrounding area. 

How to get from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

The train ride to Nuwara Eliya can be one of the best parts of visiting this area. For swoon-worthy views, take the train from Kandy to Nanu Oya, the nearest station.

You can then catch a tuk-tuk or taxi to travel the five miles or so to town. 

Alternatively, you can travel by bus from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, or book a private car or minivan transfer.

Day 6: Ella

Best for: Hiking

Where to stay: Hide Ella Hotel & Resort

Ella, in the Sri Lankan highlands, is one for nature lovers. Like Nuwara Eliya, the elevation means this area has a cooler climate than other parts of the country.

This biodiverse region is rich in both flora and fauna. 

Here it’s all about unspoiled natural beauty, and hiking the trails is the best way to get to grips with the lush, fertile landscape.

There are various fairly flat routes, which are suitable for rookie hikers. Ella is also known for its attractive Nine Arches Bridge. 

While in Ella, you can also take a train and tuk-tuk ride to Lipton’s Seat, perched above the Lipton tea plantation in Haputale.

There’s also Diyaluma Falls, Sri Lanka’s second-highest; cookery classes at Ella Spice Garden; the Flying Ravana Mega Zipline for thrill-seekers; and of course the pretty town of Ella itself to explore. 

How to get from Nuwara Eliya to Ella

The train route between Nanu Oya, near Nuwara Eliya, and Ella is also a very picturesque one. It takes around an hour and three-quarters to travel the distance by train. 

Again, you could also travel via car or minivan, by booking a private transfer.

Day 7 to 8: Yala National Park

Best for: Safari

Where to stay: Hilton Yala Resort

Yala National Park offers elephant encounters, more than 200 bird species, and even the exciting possibility of spotting a leopard. 

It’s also got forests, beaches, grasslands, and temples. Going on safari is obviously the main reason to visit Yala National Park.

You can spot many creatures in their natural habitat, and the best time to see crocodiles, elephants, or leopards is during early morning or late afternoon. 

A guided bush walk also offers close encounters with native wildlife, all under the watchful eye of an experienced park ranger.

Yala is incredibly popular with bird watchers, with early morning being the top time to look out for a variety of colourful, large, or exotic birds.

Sithulpawwa Temple and the beaches within the park add to Yala’s appeal too.

How to get from Ella to Yala

You’ll need a car to get to Yala National Park from Ella. If you’re not renting a car to drive yourself, then do as I did and hire a car with a driver to take you there.

Due to low Sri Lankan prices, this option is more accessible than you might think. 

Day 9: Galle

Best for: A coastal gem

Where to stay: Kahanda Kanda

Classic charm and beaches combine in Galle, a coastal getaway on the island’s southwestern tip.

There are lots of historic buildings, beautiful beaches, and surely one of the most appealing foodie scenes in south Asia.

During its time, Galle has been under British, Dutch, and Portuguese rule, and the architecture reflects this. 

White Galle lighthouse, framed by palm trees, is the picture postcard image of the city, and you can wander the fort walls for fascinating insights into local life – as well as sweeping views. 

Other attractions in Galle include the National Maritime Museum, the colonial-style Old Dutch Hospital, and the shops selling unique, locally crafted goods.

The best coastal spots, meanwhile, include Unawatuna and Jungle beaches; and Mirissa, for whale watching.

You can also visit the Sea Turtle Hatchery Centre, or Galle International Stadium if you’re into cricket. 

How to get from Yala to Galle

Again, travelling from Yala National Park requires a car, so you’ll either need to rent one, or hire a car with a driver locally.

Day 10: Return to Colombo

On your final day, you’ll need to travel back to Colombo to catch your onward or return flight.

How to get from Galle to Colombo

If you want to travel directly from Galle to Colombo, the train journey takes around two hours. Alternatively, you can travel between the two by private car or minivan.

1. Ahangama

Ahangama is a very happening coastal town in south Sri Lanka popular with those who appreciate easy access to the nearby beaches and plenty of surf spots. While it used to be quiet, it can now be very busy – especially during the peak travel season between December and February.

Head inland and you’ll be met with traditional craftspeople and lush rice paddies, or venture to the coast for hipster cafes and restaurants.

3. Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a famous surfing destination on Sri Lanka’s east coast, though more and more non-surfers and families are flocking to the small town from May to October for its long sandy beaches, proximity to lesser-visited national parks and budget-friendly hotels.

Bentota is a classic resort town in southwest Sri Lanka, easily reachable from Colombo or Galle. It offers sandy beaches and quiet lagoon tours through the mangroves. Galle was an important port city when the country was occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and was later fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. 9. Hambantota

Hambantota is a rural town in southeast Sri Lanka and part of the ancient Kingdom of Ruhuna. The city served as an important port city in the past, and continues to play an important role in Sri Lanka’s trade and commerce today. It is also now home to one of Sri Lanka’s biggest beach resorts, the Shangri-La Hambantota .

10. Haputale

Haputale in Sri Lanka’s hill country is a small town surrounded by tea estates, and is most well known as being a convenient launch point for visitors heading to the picturesque Lipton’s Seat viewpoint.

11. Hikkaduwa

One of Sri Lanka’s most famous and popular beach towns, Hikkaduwa is lined on either side by shallow coral reef and lush palm trees. It is popular with divers and snorkelers alike who flock to its shores to see the rich marine life.

12. Hiriketiya

Hiriketiya is an idyllic horseshoe-shaped bay in Dickwella town in south Sri Lanka. It is one of the best beaches in south Sri Lanka and is protected from wind and swell throughout the year, which makes it a wonderful swimming spot all year round – it has quickly become one of the top places to visit in Sri Lanka.

13. Horton Plains

Horton Plains National Park is a national park in the highlands of Sri Lanka featuring lush grassland and evergreen forests, as well as endemic flora and fauna including the graceful Sri Lankan sambar deer. World’s End is one of the most spectacular clifftop viewpoints in the country, or you can venture along one of the many hiking trails that traverse through the park.

Jaffna is a small city located at the northernmost tip of the island with a predominantly Tamil population. Though it was rebuilt after the Civil War that ended in 2009, tourists are slowly venturing north from Colombo to explore the city’s rich Sri Lankan and colonial landmarks and history.

15. Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya is located in the Puttalam district approximately 4 hours by car northwest of Colombo. You might not have heard of Kalpitiya but it is one of the most famous places in Sri Lanka for water sports. It is bordered by the Gulf of Mannar on one side and the Puttalam lagoon and Dutch Bay on the other, which makes it a very popular destination for kitesurfing and windsurfing. 18. Knuckles Mountain Range

Named after the ridges along the mountain that resemble knuckles of a closed fist, the Knuckles Mountain Range in Central Sri Lanka is a UNESCO Heritage Site that features viewpoints with sheer drops, dense cloud forests, roaring waterfalls and hiking trails.

19. Koggala

Koggala is a small coastal town in south Sri Lanka featuring the sprawling Koggala Lake on one side, and long golden beach on the other. The town is also well known for the stilt fishermen who are often found straddling precariously thin wooden stilts by the beach.

Madiha is a small town close to the city of Matara in south Sri Lanka with a growing number of beach cafes and restaurants. It is especially popular among surfers who flock to its shores for consistent reef breaks.

Matara near the southernmost point of Sri Lanka is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest cities. It was ruled by Sinhala kings for thousands of years is currently a transportation and commerce hub in the south. As it was occupied by the Portuguese and the Dutch it also features colonial architecture and landmarks.

22. Midigama

Midigama is a tiny town sandwiched between Ahangama and Weligama in south Sri Lanka. Though it is not as well known as its neighbours, it is popular among surfers who head to Midigama to ride Lazy Left’s, Ram’s and Lazy Right’s. Non-surfers can also visit the Yakinige Duuwa tombola and snorkel around its shallow reef.

23. Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park, like its neighbour Kaudulla, is one of the best places to see wild Asian elephants in Sri Lanka . Large hordes of elephants trek to the reservoir during the dry season to play, bathe, drink and socialize, and visitors can watch these gentle giants from afar in their natural habitat. 24. Mirissa

Mirissa is one of the top tourist destinations in Sri Lanka, famous for being the hub for dolphin and whale watching in the south coast. Before you embark on a whale watching adventure, make sure you choose an ethical tour operator that does not chase or harass the marine mammals. I have heard good things about Raja & the Whales ( read more reviews here ) and I also recommend Sail Lanka’s luxury catamarans for a more intimate experience.

25. Negombo

Negombo is a small beach-side town on the west coast of Sri Lanka with a large Catholic population. Though I personally think Negombo Beach is not the best for swimming, lounging or surfing, you can walk along the sandy shoreline and watch the fishermen at work. It is an extremely convenient town to stay in if you need a place before a late-night or early-morning flight, as it’s only a 15-20 minute drive from the main international airport.

Don’t miss: St. Mary’s Church, St. Sebastian’s Church, Negombo Beach.

26. Nilaveli

Nilaveli is a coastal town in eastern Sri Lanka best known for its long pristine beach and access to the coral reef-laden Pigeon Island Marine National Park. Perfect for visitors to Sri Lanka looking for a quiet beach experience.

27. Nuwara Eliya

Also known as “Little England”, Nuwara Eliya high up in Sri Lanka’s hill country is strangely reminiscent of a small British village with its colonial-era heritage bungalows and houses.

It is a popular starting point for people looking to hike up Adam’s Peak or visit World’s End, or you can simply take a gentle stroll around Lake Gregory to take in one of the most beautiful places to visit in Sri Lanka – no judgment here! Tea lovers will appreciate the many factories which graciously open their doors to allow visitors to witness first-hand the tea production process and sip on world-famous Ceylon brew.

Don’t miss: Lake Gregory, Bluefield Tea Gardens, Mackwoods Tea Museum, Bomburuella Waterfall.

28. Pasikudah

Pasikudah is slowly gaining popularity as a beach destination in eastern Sri Lanka after the civil war and tsunami. Like Nilaveli, the beach is near-pristine and far quieter than the famous beaches in the south, though the tourism infrastructure is still being improved upon.

29. Polonnaruwa

These ruins cannot be left off your Sri Lanka sightseeing itinerary: Polonnaruwa served as Sri Lanka’s ancient capital city for nearly 2 centuries between the 11th and 13th centuries.

30. Sigiriya

Sigiriya is one of the top tourist attractions in Sri Lanka – the massive, awe-inspiring monument is an ancient fortress that dates back to the 5th century.

31. Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park in south Sri Lanka and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It is “ the last remaining relatively undisturbed remnant of tropical humid evergreen forest in Sri Lanka ” and home to a huge array of threatened, endangered and rare species. You can do guided tours or day trips around the forest reserve, and it is especially popular with avid bird watchers and wildlife lovers.

32. Talalla

Talalla is a small, somewhat “secret” town in south Sri Lanka offering a laid-back beach that stretches along for more than a kilometre. For those seeking some serious downtime, set up shop at Talalla Retreat and sign up for daily Yoga and meditation classes, or head to the local spa for a massage or Ayurveda treatment. After a few days, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that this is one of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka!

Talpe is an often overlooked south coast town nestled between Unawatuna and Koggala. The main road is lined with boutique hotels aplenty, but if you cross over to the other side you’ll find popular beaches and Instagram-famous rope swings.

34. Tangalle

Tangalle is one of the largest towns in southern Sri Lanka, not far from Hambantota. It offers an array of unspoiled beaches and tends to be much quieter than its counterparts on the southwest coast. 35. Trincomalee

Trincomalee, or “Trinco” as the locals call it, is a port city on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The community is predominantly Tamil, and is one of the oldest settlements on the island. Trinco has long, idyllic beaches to offer, and its shores are graced by the presence of whales and dolphins from May to about September during the east coast’s “peak season”.

36. Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park is located in the south of Sri Lanka and is a popular destination for those hoping to spot wild elephants. It is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see elephants throughout the year as there are a few hundred elephants living within the park.

37. Unawatuna

Another one of Sri Lanka’s most famous tourist beaches , Unawatuna is a coastal town with a number of beaches and tourist attractions on offer. The small town is extremely developed with many restaurants and cafes available for the large hordes of tourists that flock to its golden shores. Alternatively, you can rent a snorkel or try your hand at diving off its shallow reef.

38. Weligama

Weligama is the poster child for beaches on the island, and one of the top tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. The former fishing village embraced visitors very early on, so offers many restaurants and well-established tourist infrastructure.

The beach is almost always densely packed with tourists as well as up to a hundred surfers learning to surf in white water.

Don’t miss: Sunset drinks at Cape Weligama , Taprobane Island, brunch at Ceylon Sliders, surfing at Weligama Beach.

39. Wilpattu National Park

Nearly sixty lakes and tanks are found throughout Wilpattu National Park in northeast Sri Lanka, as well as the rare sloth bear and an unknown population of the Sri Lankan leopard.

40. Yala National Park

Yala National Park is the second largest national park in Sri Lanka and receives the most number of visitors each year. It is located in the south and is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist destinations – visitors head to the park in the hopes of spotting leopards as it boasts one of the highest leopard densities in the world. Planning a trip to Sri Lanka? Here are some quick logistics must-knows:

✈️  To get into Sri Lanka by air you will fly into Bandaranaike International Airport  (airport code: CMB).

🛂  Most visitors will need to  apply for a Sri Lanka e-visa  (except for nationals of Singapore, Maldives and Seychelles) but can be done online. It usually takes 24-48 hours for the visa approval to come through via e-mail. Here is my step-by-step guide to using the new Sri Lanka electronic visa website. ( Note that as of April 17th 2024 the old electronic travel authorization (“ETA”) website has been decommissioned as the government moved to a new e-visa website. ) You can also get a Sri Lankan visa upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport.

💱  The currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee  (different from the Indian Rupee), and the official exchange rate currently varies from approximately 300-330 LKR: 1 USD/Euro or 200 LKR: 1 AUD. Exchange some money upon arrival or withdraw some from ATMs in major cities like Colombo and Galle.

📱  Local SIM cards and data packages can be picked up at the airport . You can  buy a 30-day Sri Lanka SIM card from Mobitel here  (the booth is located in the arrivals hall after you pick up your luggage) and top it up during your stay at any Food City supermarket or local Mobitel shop.

👚  The primary religion in Sri Lanka is Buddhism , so be mindful of your attire when you visit temples. While there is no strict dress code it can be considered culturally offensive to walk around towns and villages wearing extremely revealing outfits – the same goes for men and women. 💵 In general there is no need to tip if your hotel or restaurant has included a service charge. However, a small tip is always appreciated by people in the service industry (such as porters, housekeeping staff, waiters etc.) and tuk tuk drivers.

15 Top Tourist Attractions in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is truly spellbinding and will suit any traveler’s interests with its top tourist attractions. The small island nation is chock-full of adventure activities like surfing and trekking.

There are several highly religious sites for the religious devotee, and unbelievable historical tourist attractions for history buffs in Sri Lanka . However, no one can dispute Sri Lanka’s incredible natural beauty. Whether it be en-route to a perfect surf break, visiting a historical site or on a pilgrimage, lush greenery and exotic animals are never far away.

15. Nine Arch Bridge [SEE MAP]

One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights is the Nine Arch Bridge in the small mountain town of Ella . This viewpoint offers spectacular panoramas of the surrounding area, which is made up of verdant greenery and tea fields.

Visitors can watch trains roll over the bridge as they make their way along the Demodara Loop. Constructed in the early days of the railway expansion in Sri Lanka, the bridge is particularly impressive because it is made of cement, stone and brick, without the use of any steel.

14. Mihintale [SEE MAP]

Mihintale is a mountain near the town of Anuradhapura. Its summit has much spiritual significance to the Buddhist community. It’s believed that on this mountain top a Buddhist monk named Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa and together this meeting introduced Buddhism to the country.

Monk Mahinda impressed the King with the peacefulness of the Buddhist doctrine and his contented, serene nature. The King subsequently renounced war, and went on to spread peace throughout the nation. There are several impressive religious and historical structures on and around Mihintale Mountain. Hundreds of pilgrims visit the site each year.

13. Unawatuna [SEE MAP]

This white sand beach in the small seaside town of Unawatuna is a great place to relax. There are a number of snorkeling and diving operators in town who take advantage of the abundance of coral reefs just off the beach.

Colorful fish and plentiful turtles are the norm in these waters. There are a number of great dining options along the beach, which welcome visitors to use their sun loungers and relax the day away with a drink in hand.

12. Gal Viharaya [SEE MAP]

Visitors can find Gal Viharaya in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Gal Viharaya is a famous Buddhist site and is celebrated for its many caves and large sculptures of Buddha which are carved into the rock faces. They are extremely well preserved, even though they were crafted in the 12th century.

To the side of one of the statues, a code of conduct is inscribed. The code, when followed, was meant to purify the Buddhist monks and bring them together under one order. It was created by a very famous king: King Parakramabahu the first. Today, Gal Viharaya is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular sites of pilgrimage.

11. Kataragama Festival [SEE MAP]

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, the Kataragama Festival takes place every year in July or August and is dedicated to one of the Hindu gods. It takes place over a two-week period and people from all over the world come to join in.

The festival is jam-packed with parades of elephants and colorfully dressed performers. There are countless traditional dances that take place; with musicians, acrobats, and fire-breathers feeding into the festival’s contagious energy.

10. Udawalawe National Park [SEE MAP]

There are few places in the world where elephant sightings are so frequent. However, elephants are not the only animals to see within Udawalawe National Park; peacocks, jackals, water buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys and deer also roam the area.

Safaris are most popular in the early morning hours when animals are at their most active. The biodiversity of the park can be attributed to its varied landscape; it is flanked by mountain ranges to the north with wetlands and rivers hugging the grasslands and forests at the base of the mountains.

9. Ravana Falls [SEE MAP]

The beautiful Ravana Falls are used for bathing in the hot summer months. In the rainy season, the water flow is exceptionally strong and is an impressive sight. The falls are part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, and the nearby cave complex is rich in local legend.

Conveniently located on the main road on the way to Ella town, the caves are a common stop off point for visitors during their journey. Many cheeky monkeys live in the surrounding trees and they are often seen on the roadside dining on fruit. However, don’t let them get too close, as sometimes they can get over-friendly with visitors.

8. Dambulla Cave Temple [SEE MAP]

The Dambulla Cave Temple is a sacred Buddhist site. There is no entry fee to get into the temple on full-moon days; however, these days are especially busy because of the religious significance of this lunar phase. Devotees from all over the world make pilgrimage to this place.

There are over 80 caves documented in the area, but the most famous five are outfitted with impressive statues and paintings. Some of the caves date back to 1000 BC, when prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived within them, so it is unsurprising that they would have created temples inside at that time. If you do plan to visit, please be aware that visitors must cover their shoulders and legs and remove shoes before entering the temple.

7. Mirissa [SEE MAP]

Mirissa is the ultimate Sri Lankan beach getaway. The beautiful long beach is flanked by tall overhanging palm trees and lined with modern restaurants and hotels. The restaurants have western style food at Sri Lankan prices. Just off the beach is Parrot Rock. It has a small staircase leading to the top that offers great views of the ocean and coastline.

Day trips from Mirissa include whale watching, snorkeling and surfing. Weligama, just a few kilometers from Mirissa, is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka to learn surfing. Come happy hour and into the evening, many the restaurants turn their venues into beach clubs and pump out drinks and tunes.

6. Arugam Bay [SEE MAP]

Arugam Bay is revered by surfers. This small town on the east coast of Sri Lanka embodies the quintessential laid-back surf lifestyle. The Main Point surf break is within walking distance from the town center, but is only recommended for advanced or intermediate surfers.

Otherwise, Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm are two great surf beaches for beginner and intermediate surfers; a short tuk-tuk ride will take you there. Often elephants and peacocks can be spotted beside the road, just outside of town. The main strip in Arugam Bay town is lined with restaurants and hotels where you can dine on anything from traditional Sri Lankan curry to full English breakfasts.

5. Temple of the Tooth [SEE MAP]

The Temple of the Tooth is a highly sacred place. The temple contains one of Buddha’s teeth. Legend has it that the tooth was taken from the Buddha on his deathbed, then smuggled to Sri Lanka from India. It was smuggled in the hair of a princess, after her father’s kingdom had been besieged.

It immediately became an object of great importance and has been celebrated and paraded throughout history. However, many attempts have also been made to steal or destroy the tooth. Twice daily, pujas are held to celebrate the relic and offer visitors and devotees the chance to get a glimpse of the tooth within its casing.

4. Adam's Peak [SEE MAP]

At the summit of Adam’s Peak is a footprint cast in stone. It has spiritual significance to a number of different religions, however, there is currently a Buddhist monastery at the summit. To the Buddhists, the footprint is that of Buddha’s; to Christians, the footprint is Adam’s; and to Hindus, the footprint is attributed to Shiva.

The site is a popular place of pilgrimage, especially on full moon nights. The trek to the top of the mountain to see the footprint is via a steep staircase containing over 5000 steps. The trail is lined with many tea stalls and food shops which act as places of rest. Most people begin their hike at 2:30 am to reach the summit in time for sunrise.

3. Galle Fort [SEE MAP]

It is easy to get lost in the cobblestoned alleyways and streets within Galle Fort. Today the area is full of modern restaurants, hotels, clothing, and souvenir shops. Meanwhile, snake charmers and buskers line the seawall.

However, the fort was not always such a cosmopolitan spot. A basic fort was constructed by the Portuguese when they made their first landing to the island in 1505. When the Dutch eventually seized control of Galle , they made a number of improvements; including the enormous sea wall that still lines the fort. Galle Fort is an excellent example of what the synthesis between European and Asian architecture looks like.

2. Yala National Park [SEE MAP]

Yala National Park is made up of spellbinding vistas and a true abundance of Sri Lankan wildlife. It has the highest density of leopards in the world, so chances of seeing them are very high.

Although leopards are the main attraction here, they are followed closely by elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. The park is divided into five blocks; some of which were zoned to hunters until Yala became a national park in 1938. Ensure you make time to visit the very informative visitor center at the entrance of the park for insightful displays about the area.

1. Sigiriya Rock Fort [SEE MAP]

Sigiriya Rock Fort is utterly impressive. The rock walls rise up 200 meters from the ground, only to give way to a flat plateau at their summit. There are steep stairwells to reach the top and many frescos to marvel at on the way up. At the top, you can find the remains of an ancient civilization, including relics of a palace and monastery.

It would have taken true engineering ingenuity to build a structure at this height so many centuries ago. Around the rock fort are many important caves and gardens; impressively, they are some of the first landscaped gardens in the world.

Hello Again Sri Lanka

The beach of Hikkaduwa is situated 98 km from Colombo towards the south of Sri Lanka. This fun coastal town, 14 km away from Galle was the first (1960’s) of Sri Lanka’s beautiful beaches to be discovered by tourists. Snorkelling and diving in the clear waters are a major past-time along this stretch and is the most environmentally friendly way to see the colourful fish that dart around. The coral sanctuary found along the coast of Hikkaduwa is a large shallow body of water enclosed by a reef, decorated with layers of multi coloured corals, and is home to countless numbers of vibrantly coloured fish. Off the beach there is a collection of small islets surrounded by beautiful coral formations. Many species of fish and large turtles are found here. There are more than four different shipwrecks for diving enthusiasts to explore along with dive shops offering PADI courses and equipment.

With plenty of beachfront accommodation and a reputation as the second best surf spot in Sri Lanka, the reason why so many visit Hikkaduwa is blatantly clear. The resort area has now engulfed two or three villages south of it, and is now a 4km strip of hotels, shops, bars, restaurants and guesthouses. The beaches are lovely and wide and swimming is safe here, though the currents are stronger when it comes to the south of Hikkaduwa. The impressive coral reef runs just offshore and is still populated by exotic fish and sea turtles. Glass bottomed boats are available for visitors wanting to admire the wonders of the deep while keeping their feet dry! After a short distance southwards from the centre of the reef, it diminishes and starts a wider sandy bottomed beach with good waves ideal for board surfing and body surfing.

The area is not overcrowded but there are many tourists and locals during the peak season. Since its a coral reef, it is always advisable for travellers to be safe than sorry. Do not feel intimidated by the locals although there might be instances that you are hassled. There are many shops selling Masks, Gems, Jewellery, Batik, Antiques and etc. along with several Buddhist temples, all which add spice to life at Hikkaduwa.

Sri Lanka was a wonderful surprise. I didn’t know what to expect going into my trip, but I ended up loving every bit of it.

It is a divided country, with the south dominated by Buddhist Sinhalese and the north by Hindu Tamils. After the British left in 1948, the Sinhalese controlled the government and enacted a series of laws that limited Tamil participation in society. Eventually, Tamil protests escalated and a 26-year civil war ensued, only ending in 2009.

Though it has been some time since then, Sri Lanka is still very much recovering — but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit. In fact, my time there was especially memorable due to my experiences meeting and getting to know the incredibly friendly locals. No matter where I went, Sri Lankans welcomed me with kindness and open arms.

Traveling around Sri Lanka is relatively easy and very budget-friendly. English is widely spoken, so once you get used to the chaos, it isn’t too difficult to get around.

With that in mind, here’s my Sri Lanka travel guide so that you can save money, have fun, and make the most of your visit to this beautiful country!

A note on prices and currencies : Costs for attractions in this guide are in USD, while costs for restaurants and accommodations are in LKR. This is to most accurately represent the currency in which you will see prices. Foreign visitors are charged a different price from locals at most attractions, quoted in USD. Registered tourist establishments are required to accept only foreign currency from nonresidents, as part of a governmental scheme to build up the country’s reserves of stronger currencies.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Sri Lanka

1. Tour a tea estate

When the British colonized the island in the early 19th century, they quickly realized that the central highlands had the perfect climate and topography for growing tea. One of the largest, lasting impacts of colonialism is that a significant portion of the country is still covered in tea plantations or estates.

The town of Hatton is known as the tea capital of Sri Lanka, as it’s the central point of a few regions where the plant is still plucked by hand (and one of the few places in the world where this still occurs). Going on a plantation or factory tour is a great way to learn about this integral part of the country’s economy and culture. Tours are often free, though if there is a fee, it’s only around 250 LKR. Tours usually include a tea tasting at the end.

2. See the wildlife at Yala National Park

This is Sri Lanka’s second-largest and most popular national park. It’s well known for its abundant wildlife, especially the elephants and leopards that make their home here. In fact, it’s the best place in the world to try to spot leopards, as it has the highest density of them! The area is culturally significant as well, with two important Buddhist pilgrim sites, Sithulpahuwa and Magul Vihara, located within the park. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit these sites each year. While a guide isn’t required to enter the park, joining a safari led by an experienced local guide is the best way to experience Yala, as you’ll be able to ask questions as they point out animals to you. Safaris are quite affordable too, starting at just 8,600 LKR.

3. Hike Sigiriya Rock

Also known as Lion’s Rock, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the country’s most famous tourist attraction. In the fifth century, Sri Lankan ruler King Kashyapa decided to build his fortress on this massive column of granite rock. While it was abandoned shortly after his death, its remote location meant that the palace remained untouched over the centuries, and today it remains a fascinating example of ancient urban planning.

You can hike to the top for stunning views over the lush landscapes below; it takes an hour to walk up, as it’s single file all the way. As it’s one of the most popular things to do in Sri Lanka, you won’t have this place to yourself. Get there when it opens at 6:30am to avoid huge lines. If you are there after 10am, the crowds are so overwhelming, it’s not worth visiting. Admission is $30 USD ( guided day trips from Kandy that also include visits to the cave temples of Dambulla are $70 USD).

Pro tip: if you’re on a budget, climb Pidurangala Rock instead. It’s much cheaper (500 LKR), plus you’ll actually get views of Sigiriya Rock itself! (Just note that the trail does involve some scrambling at times, while the trail to the top of Sigiriya is steep but easier, with metal steps and staircases.)

4. Take the train

The British built the Sri Lankan railway system in 1864 to transport tea and coffee from plantations to Colombo, where these goods were then shipped out internationally. The train lines are still in use and provide a scenic way to explore the country. There are three main lines, but the ride from Kandy to Ella is widely considered one of the most beautiful in the world. It lasts seven hours and takes you through lush mountains, tropical forests, and endless tea plantations; the picturesque 20th-century Nine Arches Bridge is on this route as well.

If you’d like to take this journey, it’s best to book with a travel agency in advance as seats sell out quickly. Just adjust your expectations regarding timeliness and speed. Don’t be in a hurry when riding the rails in Sri Lanka!

5. Visit Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura was the very first capital of Sri Lanka and remained so for around 1,300 years. Today, many of the old ruins still survive and have been restored to their former glory. This archaeological complex and UNESCO site contains many of Buddhism’s holiest places, including Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the fig tree where it is believed that the Buddha himself obtained enlightenment. It’s also home to Jetavanaramaya Dagaba, which at 122 meters (400 feet) is the world’s tallest stupa. Most people either rent a bicycle or hire a tuk-tuk to take them around the complex. Admission to the five main temples is $25 USD, though there are many smaller temples and sites that are either free or just a couple of dollars.

Other Things to See and Do

1. visit kandy.

The country’s second-largest city was also the last capital of Sri Lanka’s monarchy, the Kingdom of Kandy, which arose in the late 16th century and resisted both Dutch and Portuguese rule before finally succumbing to British colonization in the early 19th century. Kandy is known for its well-preserved historic colonial center (now a UNESCO site), as well as the Buddhist shrine the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (supposedly an actual tooth of the Buddha). Many visitors come here because it’s the starting point for the scenic train to Ella, but make sure to spend a few days exploring the bustling streets, enjoying Kandy Lake, and wandering through the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya, the nation’s biggest and most impressive botanical garden.

2. Explore Ella

If you take Sri Lanka’s most scenic train ride, you’ll end up in the town of Ella, which, though small, is a popular destination. Even if you don’t take the train to get here, the iconic Nine Arches railway bridge is one of the biggest attractions in the entire country. You can get to the lookout by hiking through the forest, and then waiting for a train to go by if you want that iconic “Sri Lankan postcard” shot. Other things to see and do here include traversing the surrounding rainforests to see stunning waterfalls, hiking Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock, and visiting the endless tea plantations.

3. Travel up north

After decades of war, the north has a legacy of destruction that has yet to go away. For that reason, most travelers focus on the southern half of Sri Lanka, with its plentiful hiking and charming beach towns. But seeing the north gave me a more nuanced perspective on a portion of the country without hordes of other tourists. In fact, in my time there, I saw only four Westerners.

As the area is mainly Hindu, you’ll find lots of beautiful temples here, including the impressive Nallur Kandaswamy in Jaffna. The north also offers beautiful yet uncrowded beaches, a plethora of tranquil islands to explore, and delicious food with a strong southern Indian influence.

4. See the temples

Sri Lanka has an astonishing number of impressive temples. Everywhere you go, there’s a beautiful temple! Some of the most famous include Temple of the Tooth (in Kandy), Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam and Gangaramaya (both in Colombo), Dambulla Cave Temple (in Dambulla), and Nallur Kandaswamy Temple (in Jaffna).

When visiting, be sure to dress appropriately, as these are active places of worship. Also, bring flip-flops to temples, since you’ll have to take your socks and shoes off before going inside. Entrance fees range from free to around $10 USD.

5. Take a cooking class

While I didn’t know much about the country’s food before arriving, I quickly became hooked on the delicious curries of Sri Lankan cuisine. Colombo Cooking Class offers three-hour sessions in which you make 10 dishes, including curries, coconut sambol, and papadam. The class takes place in the owner’s home, and it really feels like you’re learning to cook with a friend! The cost is around 20,000 LKR.

6. Hit the beaches

Since it’s a huge island, Sri Lanka’s coastline spans over 1,340 kilometers (830 miles), meaning there are countless beaches to enjoy. There are white-sand shores to stroll on, coral reefs perfect for snorkeling, picturesque sunsets to admire, and breaks great for surfing. No matter what you’re into, there’s a beach for you in Sri Lanka.

Arugam Bay and Mirissa Beach are some of the most well known, mainly as world-famous surfing destinations, but they both have nice beach towns to visit even if you don’t surf.

7. Day trip to Galle

Founded in the late 16th century by the Portuguese and later conquered by the Dutch in the mid-17th century, Galle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a beautifully preserved old fort town that’s worth a visit. A visit here is best spent just wandering around, admiring the Dutch colonial buildings, walking the perimeter of the old fort, shopping at the artisanal craft stores (or taking a workshop to learn how to make jewelry in the traditional style ), touring the National Maritime Museum, and eating fresh seafood.

But as that’s about the extent of what there is to do, I recommend visiting Galle as a day trip from Colombo rather than staying overnight. It’s super easy, as you can take the train directly, which takes about two hours.

8. Climb Adam’s Peak

Adam’s Peak is Sri Lanka’s most sacred mountain and an important pilgrimage destination. Hindus and Buddhists believe the mountain is the footstep of Shiva and the Buddha, respectively, while Muslims and Christians revere it as the first place Adam stepped on earth after his ousting from the Garden of Eden.

But even if you aren’t religious, trekking to the top of Adam’s Peak is a rewarding experience for both the challenge of the ascent and the magnificent views. It is a steep climb, with over 5,000 steps to get to the top, though there are many teahouses to stop at along the way. Most hikers start their climb from the village of Dalhousie around 2am in order to reach the top by sunrise. Depending on your fitness level, the entire journey takes around 5-7 hours.

9. Go whale watching

While countries like Iceland get all the press for whale watching, Sri Lanka is actually one of the best places to view these awe-inspiring creatures. Many species — including the blue whale, the largest animal on earth — migrate annually around the southern tip of the island, swimming closer to shore here than anywhere else in the world.

Mirissa Beach is the best place to depart from, and there are many operators offering tours. Be sure to go with a company that adheres to responsible international whale watching standards, which include stipulations like not getting too close, not feeding the whales, etc. I recommend Raja and the Whales, where an adult ticket is around 20,000 LKR.

10. Explore Colombo

As the country’s capital and location of its major international airport, you’ll undoubtedly be flying in and out of Colombo. This busy city is a bit of everything, with modern cafés and bistros right next to traditional Buddhist and Hindu temples. It’s worth spending a couple days here, getting your bearings and enjoying the cultural offerings.

Sri Lanka Travel Costs

Sri Lanka is cheap to visit. Even when you splurge, it’s not that expensive, especially if you stick to delicious local cuisine, travel on trains and buses, and don’t go crazy with your accommodation.

Accommodation – There is a lot of cheap accommodation throughout the country (and a growing number of hostels), though they’re really basic, with just a fan, mosquito net, and shower. At 2,000-4,000 LKR per dorm bed, you can’t go wrong though. Private rooms in hostels start around 6,500 LKR.

Guesthouses are more plentiful and affordable, with private rooms that have an en-suite bathroom starting at 5,000 LKR per night. Two-star budget hotels start around 8,000 LKR. In both cases, you’ll usually get free breakfast and Wi-Fi too.

You can find some unique Airbnbs in Sri Lanka, though they tend to be pricey. Prices range from 7,000 LKR per night for tree houses and cabins to 25,000 LKR and up for villas and larger properties. Most of the midrange options on Airbnb are hotels and guesthouses.

Food – Incredibly flavorful and packed with fragrant spices, Sri Lankan food is influenced by the culture and cuisines of foreign traders from all over the world. Middle Eastern, Indian, Portuguese, and Dutch flavors are particularly common due to trading routes and the country’s colonial history.

Cinnamon and black pepper are the two most important spices, though cardamom, pandan leaf, and lemongrass feature heavily too. Sri Lankan cuisine can be quite spicy, and dozens of types of peppers are grown and used on the island.

And, as an island nation, it should come as no surprise that fresh seafood plays a major role in many Sri Lankan dishes. Maldives fish (cured tuna produced in the Maldives) is a staple flavoring element. Coconut and rice are also two ubiquitous ingredients that you’ll find on the table at every meal and part of many street snacks.

Popular dishes include various curries (including fish, crab, or lentil), biryani (meat, fish, or vegetables cooked with rice and seasoned), pittu (cylinders of rice flour mixed with grated coconut), kiribath (rice cooked in coconut milk), roti (flatbread made from wheat flour), wattalapam (rich pudding made with coconut milk, jaggery, cashews, eggs, and spices), kottu (roti, meat curry, scrambled egg, onions, and chilies, chopped together with a cleaver on a hot griddle), appam (a thin pancake made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk), lamprais (rice cooked in stock, accompanied by meatballs, and baked in a banana leaf), breudher (a Dutch holiday biscuit), and bolo fiado (Portuguese-style layer cake).

Besides being delicious, food is also really cheap here. At a casual traditional restaurant, starters and snacks like roti or dosa are 240-550 LKR, while biryani costs 450-900 (depending on the meat chosen), and a typical curry dish costs 550-950 LKR. A fast-food combo meal is 750 LKR.

At restaurants with table service or for a more “Western” meal, a pizza is 2,500-3,500 LKR, a pasta dish is 1,500-2,200, and a burger is around 1,100-1,500 LKR. At an upscale restaurant, fish or crab curry is 3,500-4,000 LKR, while a chicken or vegetable curry is 1,000-1,500 LKR.

A bottle of water is 100-150 LKR, a cappuccino is 600 LKR, and a beer is around 500-600 LKR, though don’t expect too many chances to drink alcohol. Outside the coastal touristy beach towns and the capital of Colombo, there isn’t much nightlife or opportunity to drink. While you can always crack a beer at your guesthouse, Sri Lanka isn’t home to a big drinking/nightlife culture.

Some of my favorite restaurants were Balaji Dosai and the Slightly Chilled Bar in Kandy; Ahinsa in Sigiriya; and Upali’s and the Ministry of Crab in Colombo. The last one is an expensive seafood restaurant, but the food is delicious! Sri Lankan crab is famous worldwide — and gigantic. It’s not cheap, but sometimes you just have to treat yourself.

Backpacking Sri Lanka: Suggested Budgets

On a backpacking budget of 9,700 LKR per day, you can stay in a hostel, eat cheap meals like street food (with limited drinking), use public transportation to get around, and do free activities like walking tours, hiking, and hanging out at beaches.

On a midrange budget of 18,000 LKR per day, you can stay in a guesthouse or private room in a hostel or Airbnb, eat out for most meals, drink more, take taxis to get around, and do more paid activities like museum visits or whale watching.

On an upscale budget of 35,000 LKR or more per day, you can stay in a hotel or private Airbnb, eat out pretty much anywhere you want, drink at the bar, rent a tuk-tuk or car to get around, and do as many guided tours and activities as you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in LKR.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Sri Lanka is very affordable, but there are still plenty of ways to help keep your costs low. Here are my top money-saving tips for traveling in Sri lanka:

• Get your visa in advance – You’ll need to get a visa for entry into the country. You can do this either online starting three days before you arrive, or upon arrival. It’s slightly cheaper if you do it ahead of time, plus you’ll skip the lines at the airport.
• Eat the local food – Outside of the major cities of Colombo and Kandy, you won’t find many non-Sri Lankan or non-Indian food options. What you do find is overpriced, subpar Western food that’s more often than not a chain. Skip it and stick to the local cuisine.
• Bring a water bottle – You shouldn’t really drink the water in Sri Lanka. And since the weather here is really hot, you’ll need to buy a lot of bottled water to stay hydrated (you’ll probably spend 300 LKR per day on plastic bottles of water). Instead, bring a reusable water bottle with a filter instead to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as its bottles have built-in filters to ensure that your water is always clean and safe.
• Stay with a local – Couchsurfing is a great way to save money on accommodation while also getting some insight from residents. You might have better luck in the larger cities, but be sure to request early, as they also see the most requests.
• Visit in off or shoulder seasons – Visit during monsoon season or shoulder season to save money. Even though you will experience some rain, it doesn’t rain 24/7, and you’ll still be able to get out and explore.

Where to Stay in Sri Lanka

Guesthouses are the most common and affordable option in Sri Lanka, though there is a growing number of hostels here too. Here are my recommended places to stay around the country:

• C1 Colombo Fort (Colombo)
• Palitha Home Stay (Sigiriya)
• Jaye’s Home Stay (Kandy)
• Backpacker Galle Hostel (Galle)

How to Get Around Sri Lanka

Bus – This is the cheapest and most widely used way to get around the country, though it can be a very crowded and at times harrowing experience. There are two types of buses: red Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses that are run by the state, and blue, pink, or green buses that are run by private companies. Private buses tend to be more crowded, as there are more seats, and drivers try to cram on as many passengers as possible.

Since you’ll most likely be flying in and/or out of Colombo, the blue Colombo Express Bus is the cheapest and easiest way to get from the airport to the city center. It’s just 110 LKR (the same price as the regular bus), leaves every 30 minutes (5:30am–8:30pm), and takes about an hour. In town, it stops at (and leaves from) the Central Bus Stand, Pettah Fort, and Colombo Fort Station. Alternatively, a taxi is about 2,700 LKR.

Tuk-tuk – All throughout Sri Lanka, you can hire drivers cheaply. Any tuk-tuk driver will let you hire them for the day, for around 10,000 LKR. Moreover, they are pretty honest — except in Colombo, where they may try to scam and overcharge you. Elsewhere in the country, you’ll get a fair deal, so there’s no need to try to bargain hard.

Ridesharing – Uber is available only in Colombo and is often more expensive than taxis, especially during rush hours. PickMe is a local taxi-hailing app that you can also use to hire tuk-tuks.

Train – Train travel, while slower, is the most scenic and culturally immersive way to get around Sri Lanka (plus, the island is so small that taking an expensive short flight doesn’t make sense). Sri Lanka Railways runs all trains, and you can find schedules and make reservations on its website.

There are a variety of classes from which to choose: first, second, third, and reserved or unreserved (third class doesn’t have reserved seating and doesn’t sell out). Seat reservations can only be made up to 30 days prior to departure.

Some typical train routes and their approximate prices include the following:

• Colombo to Jaffna (7–8 hours): 2,250 LKR
• Jaffna to Anuradhapura (2.5–3.5 hours): 1,600 LKR
• Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (3.5–4 hours): 2,500 LKR
• Colombo to Galle (2 hours): 1,600 LKR

Flying – As Sri Lanka is a relatively small island, flying domestically doesn’t make much sense. There is only one airline that even offers domestic routes (Cinnamon Air) and those are expensive, starting at 77,000 LKR for a 30-minute flight. Skip the flights.

When to Go to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is effected by two different monsoon seasons, so if you want the best weather during your trip, you’ll want to keep that in mind.

If you want to visit the beaches in the south and west, go December through March. April to September is best for visiting the north and east.

The good news is that temperatures stay fairly consistent throughout the year. Coastal regions generally have average temperatures of 25-30°C (77-86°F) while in the highlands you can expect an average of 17-19°C (63-66°F).

While there is a lot of rain during monsoon season, it doesn’t rain 24/7 so you can still enjoy the country. But no matter when you visit, make sure to bring a rain coat just in case.

Sri Lanka is a safe place to backpack and travel — even if you’re a solo traveler. Violent attacks against tourists are rare. Petty theft is the most common type of crime, especially around popular tourist landmarks. Always keep your valuables out of reach on public transportation, in crowds, and at the beach, just to be safe. A little vigilance goes a long way here since most thefts are crimes of opportunity.

The main scam to watch out for is paying the “tourist tax” (elevated prices for travelers). If you’re worried about others, read this blog post about major travel scams to avoid .

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe, though verbal (and at times physical) harassment unfortunately occurs more often here than in other countries. It’s a good idea to dress conservatively and avoid walking around alone at night.

Other issues that you may encounter involve civil unrest and the current economic crisis. Stay aware of any demonstrations that may be occurring (usually in Colombo). While they are generally peaceful, like anywhere, there is the potential for these protests becoming violent. Steer clear to avoid getting caught in the middle.

Also be aware that shortages of supplies are common, and fuel is currently being rationed. If you need medications, bring a full supply with you.

Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. It protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancelations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong unexpectedly. I never go on a trip without it, as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. Places to visit in Sri Lanka… now that’s a big topic! It’s not a big island, but it is a full one. There are a lot of magical wonders in Sri Lanka to visit.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way first. The beaches are the main draw for most backpackers and the top of nearly everyone’s itinerary for Sri Lanka. That’s fair; the beaches are super pretty.

I’ll be covering some of the beach towns but only the really famous ones. Sorry, but not even Sri Lanka’s best beaches really do it for me. I’m from the east coast of Australia; I’ve had my fill of pearly sands.

That’s okay! I’m about to let you in on the big secret of Sri Lanka’s best places to visit: they’re not the beaches. There are some truly beautiful hidden places in Sri Lanka both on – and especially off – its typical backpacking route.

So, it’s time we took a little journey around the island of paradise – ‘ The Pearl of the Indian Ocean ’. The 16 best places to visit in Sri Lanka (featuring only two beach towns). It’s time we suited up, hoisted our packs, filled our bellies with rice and curry, and hit the road. Yamu!

#1 – Tomorrowland Hostel – Wait, what the shit, dude?

Yeah, I’ve made no secret of my affection for this place. I plugged the hell outta them in my ‘Backpacking Sri Lanka Travel Guide’ and pretty much anywhere else I could.

So, you can look at this as one of two ways: either they’re secretly paying me off with hashish under the table, or I really just love this place that much. I’m of the opinion that travellers need a home more than anyone.

• Why it’s awesome: Take your pick: the view is jaw-droppingly stunning, they serve up the best feeds I’ve found in Sri Lanka, and the tunes are always tight! Tomorrowland ( no affiliation with the trashy festival) is not a party hostel but it attracts good people. There’s a reason why in 3 months of travelling Sri Lanka, I spent 6-7 weeks collectively there. The boys behind the scenes are simply some of the best.
• What to do there: Slow down, man. Watch the clouds and the sky, read a book, spin some poi, meditate on your inevitable and untimely demise: it’s all good! Tomorrowland is outta Ella but is still a stones throw away from some real highlights of Sri Lanka and, at the end of the day, when you just feel like resting somewhere that feels like home, you’ve got one to go back to. And spend some time with Beauty. She is the queen of the palace after all.

An Unfortunate Disclaimer and Update

I have sad news. My absolute favourite place to stay in Sri Lanka (and one of the most wonderful, homey, hippy-dirtbag sticky places I’ve ever found in my travels),  Tomorrowland Hostel , has changed management following some really disgusting and shady behaviour by the new management.

Unfortunately, the beautiful human that made that place a home has moved on and the person running the show now does not embody the spirit of Tomorrowland in the slightest. That’s as much as I’m saying.

If you still choose to stay at Tomorrowland while travelling Sri Lanka, you’ll probably still have an awesome time. Beauty is still the best dog I’ve ever met, the kittens are the bestest, and the hostel still attracts good travellers. But it isn’t what it once was and it’s no longer one of my sticky places – that breaks my heart.

I’m leaving it recommended in all the Sri Lanka content I wrote as a testament to its memory and as an honest reflection of the journey I had in Sri Lanka; truly, it was special. So thank you to Menno for the space he created, thank you to the boys there that made it a home, and thank you to everyone I met in my time there. Tomorrowland Hostel did a lot of good for a lot of people.

#2 – The Kandy to Ella Train – I suppose this is more of a ‘thing to do’ in Sri Lanka…

• The South Asian public transport yummies!
• Majestic sweeping vistas.
• Mega-cheap.

To be honest, I’m assuming you’ve already heard of the Kandy to Ella train purely for how famous it is. It’s definitely a must-do for anyone visiting Sri Lanka and it’s definitely-definitely something to be experienced for anyone who is unused to the public transport in this little pocket of the globe.

• Why it’s awesome: There are no damn rules! You feel like walking on the train tracks… Why not? Want to hang out the door? That’s definitely ok-ok! The snack-men keep on coming which means you’re basically sampling Sri Lanka’s scrumptious street food while travelling in serious style. The views of Sri Lanka’s hill country are simply legendary and, chances are, you’ll make some friends along the way.
• What to do there: I mean, let’s be honest, most people have obtaining the perfect snapshot for their ‘gram on the mind when they board. But, really, it’s one of the wonders of Sri Lanka. Feel the breeze and the fresh mountain air on your face as you watch the swell of tea plantations drift by.

Why, you’re right! I did write a Kandy to Ella train travel guide, so I’d definitely suggest having a read if you’re wondering how to catch Sri Lanka’s finest train ride. Option two is to book through Bookaway ; they’ll nab you a reserved seat. They’re a great choice for booking public transport in Sri Lanka however, ultimately, I’m always gonna tell you to ride local.

It’s where the best adventures are.

#3 – Arugam Bay – The place to visit in Sri Lanka for backpacker beach vibes.

• Nothin’ but swell.
• Incredible food!
• Joints aplenty.

This is numero uno of the beach towns we’re talking about, and it’s also number one on most people’s east coast Sri Lanka itinerary. The traveller vibe is very… Southeast Asia . I’ll say that and leave it at that; I’ve run my mouth off enough about the backpacker culture in Sri Lanka.

• Why it’s awesome: If the vibe you’re seeking is messy parties (house and techno, friends), cute butts, and an endless supply of fruit-print shirts and substances, then Arugam Bay is one of the top places to go in Sri Lanka. Yeah, look, I’m not gonna pretend it’s my vibe, but I am happy to report that the food is goddamn incredible! Cheap prices for being in the bubble and heaps of local joints (heh). Mama’s Restaurant still stands as one of my favourite places to eat in Sri Lanka.
• What to do there: Surfing, joints, parties, and then sleeping off the surfing, joints, and parties in hammocks. That about sums it up. The beaches aren’t as pretty as on Sri Lanka’s south coast but there are so many different breaks around that it’s rare to have a day without finding some good waves.

And, hey, listen! I wrote you a surfing in Sri Lanka guide (yes you, just you – because your butt is still my favourite butt). That’s where I’ve done most of my breaking down of Sri Lanka’s beaches with a special focus on Arugam because… well, mainly because of the food. Not gonna lie; it was mainly the munchies that kept me there.

#4 – Sigiriya – One of my top 5 places to visit in Sri Lanka.

• One giant kickass rock.
• Yay, slacklines!
• Mosquitoes –  fair warning.

Sigiriya is a super-popular destination in Sri Lanka and with good cause – there’s a giant rock that domineers the skyline over the town and it’s bloody magnificent! This is one of the top attractions on Sri Lanka’s tourist trail but it’s also crazy popular with the locals given it’s status as an extremely sacred site. It reminds me of a lot of the tourist spots in India in that regard: a lovely mix of local and traveller vibes.

• Why it’s awesome: I mean, again, did I mention the rock? Lion’s Rock with the ancient rock fortress, Sigiriya, standing guard at the top. It really is an architectural marvel and even if the historical shizz-bizz isn’t your thang-dang, it’s still gonna leave you saying “That’s one sexy-ass rock” . If the historical shizzle-nizzle is your thing, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla are an easy day trip from Sigirya. They’re two more cultural travel places to visit in Sri Lanka.
• What to do there: There’s two options for experiencing Lion’s Rock: Number one is climbing Lion’s Rock itself but it’s pricey – 4500 rups ($25ish). The upshot is that you’ll see the fortress but the downside is that it’s busy and the climb is less of a ‘hike in Sri Lanka’ and more of a ‘long flight of stairs’ in Sri Lanka. Option number two is to climb the nearby Pidurangala Rock for 500 rups. That way, you’ll actually be able to see Lion’s Rock: sunrise is nice, sunset is very nice, and the walk, though short, actually feels like a walk. Whatever you choose, when all is said and done, you can go to Rastarant in town for a fresh juice and to walk the slackline!

#5 – Rent a Tuk Tuk in Sri Lanka – The best way to travel in Sri Lanka.

• Total freedom.
• You’re driving a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka.
• You’re driving a goddamn tuk tuk in Sri Lanka!

Again, this is more of a ‘thing to do’ in Sri Lanka but… well… you’re driving a goddamn tuk tuk in Sri Lanka! If you can’t see the relevance here, then I pity the foo’! I hooked up with a couple (not like that, you weirdo) who had rented one and, my God, it was a spectacular journey.

• Why it’s awesome: Dude, think of the adventure! Is there a cool rock on the horizon? Drive to the rock! Is someone hitchhiking? Pick that sucker up ( “500 rupees – local price, machan” ). Between your rental fees and the fuel costs it’s definitely gonna run you more than Sri Lanka’s public transport. If you’re travelling Sri Lanka on a budget, this may not be the best choice for you. For everyone else… you’re driving a goddamn tuk tuk in Sri Lanka!
• What to do there: Anything you damn well please: you’ve got a three-wheeled warhorse at your disposal! Use your new companion to travel to any of these places to visit in Sri Lanka or go find your own when you’re out between the bubbles.

#6 – Mannar Island – Definitely an uncommon place to visit in Sri Lanka.

• Off the tourist trail.
• A place of ancient legend.
• Just kinda interesting.

Well, now you have a sweet ride, so why not go somewhere off Sri Lanka’s backpacking route? No one bloody-well goes to Mannar Island – seriously! In 3 months of being in Sri Lanka, I didn’t meet a single backpacker who’d been there and very, very few who knew of it.

Did I go there? Nope! I dicked it up. I didn’t have enough time; life of a working traveller , I suppose.

That’s why I reckon you should go there… if the old legends of Sri Lanka tingle your dingles.

• Why it’s awesome: Mannar Island is the home of Adam’s Bridge (or Rama Setu ) and also one of the oldest legends – and possibly most important – in Sri Lanka. The legend comes from the major Sanskrit epic of ancient India, Ramayana , and tells the tale of Rama (a chill dude who kicks ass and chews bubblegum) who builds a bridge of rocks to Sri Lanka with the aid of an army of monkey-men. Man, look, the Sanskrit legends are sick. They’re basically the OG Dragon Ball Z!
• What to do there: You can hit the beach or check out the local vibe (it’s cool heading out this far) but you’re mainly going to see Adam’s Bridge. It’s the remaining natural structure of what was once potentially a land-bridge to India. Scientists can’t seem to agree on what formed it but, generally, they do concur that it wasn’t due to the unionisation of an army of monkey-men.

#7 – Ella (Area) – One of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka.

• Those mountains, man.
• Waterfalls up the wazoo!
• Mountain-folk.

Yeah, so I already told you about my favourite place to stay in Ella but I didn’t actually tell you about Ella. It’s so gorgeous, man. Sri Lankan mountains have good vibes and so do the mountain-folk.

The town of Ella itself is a bit crap – an over-capacity little tourist bubble – but everything around it is so, so yum. That’s why I say to stay outside of Ella. I already mentioned Tomorrowland but there are plenty of other great hostels in Ella . There are some other fancier accommodations too if you’re one of those cute travelling couples that like to bang it out in hotels before heading out for the day.

• Why it’s awesome: It’s all about that natural splendour. Shades of green rise and fall between the hills all the while the magical (and truly unique) clouds play amongst the plantations. There’s good smoke around too! What to do there: There are some hikes though nothing truly murderous (for the proper hiking places in Sri Lanka, see the next section). There are some fine examples of the delicious waterfalls in Sri Lanka including it’s second-highest (which is also free unlike the highest). Honestly, I’d take a mountain over a beach any day and this place to visit in Sri Lanka (and live) gives me nothing but contentment. If you’re the same, you’ll find your people.

#8 – The Knuckles Mountain Range – One of the true wonders of Sri Lanka.

• The best place for hiking in Sri Lanka.
• More scrumptious mountains.
• Now we’re adventuring!

Oh boy, oh yum. The Knuckles Range is easily one of the best places to travel to in Sri Lanka.

You’ll find remote villages, misty peaks wrangled by jungles, waterfalls (duh), and some of the still hidden places in Sri Lanka. The thing about the mountains in Sri Lanka is that they’re not the kind I want to climb (ok, maybe a bit). They’re the kind I want to sit beneath and gaze at.

That’s special.

• Why it’s awesome: Dude, the mountains! Go see some seriously pretty skies, eat with the locals, and escape the electric world for a bit. What to do there: Without a doubt, hiking is easily the main draw there and you’ll be meeting more local tourists than foreign ones. Otherwise, it’s a place to go in Sri Lanka for those sweet tingly-dingly adventure vibes.

There are hikes in the Knuckles Mountain Range you can do sans-guide and many I wouldn’t recommend doing without one. Scope out your own guide or go see Sura at Hipsters Hideout Lounge in Kandy (a good base for the Knuckles). He’s a mate and sorts out tour packages – easy!

#9 – Meemure Village – Now we’re talking hidden places to visit in Sri Lanka!

• Sri Lanka’s most remote village.
• Overseen by Sri Lanka’s most piercing peak!
• Journey time.

Nestled deep in a valley of the Knuckles Range lies Meemure village. It’s a peaceful place. It is still, without a doubt, a village (not like those bloody Japan “villages” ).

If you’re truly seeking to burst the bubble, it’s the best place to visit in Sri Lanka. Meemure is still mighty popular with local tourists (avoid the weekends), but you’re far out of the smoothie bowl territory here.

• Why it’s awesome: A tranquil village (outside of morning and evening prayer sessions) nestled deep in the mists of the jungle. There’s not much else to say really; either this is shaggin’ your wagon or it’s not.
• What to do there: If you’re there with some communication capabilities – either through a guide or because you actually learned Sinhala (you absolute legend) – then you’ll have the opportunity to learn some truly interesting stuff about old Sri Lankan life and world-view. Otherwise, you’re looking at hiking to see some truly beautiful places in Sri Lanka to pleasure your eyeballs: softly and lovingly.

Unlike Mannar Island, this is an adventure I did make the time for. I even wrote an eyeball-pleasuring guide for getting to Meemure vilage and exploring the Knuckles Mountain Range.

#10 – Mirissa and the South Beaches – Sri Lanka’s best beaches but perhaps not the best places to visit.

Yep, that about sums it up.

Pathological sarcastic tendencies used to protect my hidden vulnerability issues aside… they’re extremely pretty beaches! Cleaner and nicer than the ones on Sri Lanka’s east coast.

I get mixed reports from travellers on the south coast and, based on my own experience, it’s highly dependent on where you go. I didn’t like it: it was too touristy. The touts and tuk-tuk drivers were just more relentless and stoney Russian-holidayer eyes wig me out wayyy harder than the trademark South Asia stare.

Mirissa is your main hub for backpacker life. The further east you go, the quieter and more local the beaches become, and the further west you head, the more Russian they become.

It’s also worth noting that you’re visiting one of Sri Lanka’s top holiday destinations. It’s not predominantly backpackers like the east coast; expect families, children, and higher prices.

• Why it’s awesome: The dope thing about the south coast of Sri Lanka is that there are sections that get good surf nearly all-year-round (yep, the south coast is in the surfing guide too). If the goal is surfing in Sri Lanka, it’s definitely the place to head any time of year. Even during the monsoon, provided you don’t care about the rain. Which, if you’re chasing proper swell, you proabably don’t. You eat monsoons for breakfast.
• What to do there: Beach shit, man. Surfing, chilling, surfing, talking about how you should do some yoga, more chilling, and then some more surfing! You’ll also find more of Sri Lanka’s party scene down that way.

#11 – Galle and the Fort – A cool place to stay in Sri Lanka for a night.

• Really different architecture.
• A really different vibe.
• Definitely pretty.

Yeah, just a night. That’s all I was feeling. For the record, I stayed in Galle Fort – the old town.

Originally a Portuguese and then Dutch fortification, being in the old town feels very much like being in a Sri Lankan variant of a European village. It’s a good place to go if you’re missing cafe culture and the rice and curry ain’t doing it for you anymore. (What’s wrong with you!) However, I felt ready to move on pretty quick: the prices are high and the feeling of both the tourists and the locals is very wealthy. (Not that that’s a bad thing. It’s just not my scene.)

• Why it’s awesome: It is mega-pretty. Like, it’s just a cool place to visit and stroll around on a trip to Sri Lanka. I’d suggest waking up early and going for a wander in the dawning sun before the tuk-tuk mafia have begun their day’s hustle.
• What to do there: Other than stroll around, not a whole heap. Check out the lighthouse and the old-school Volkswagens, get a fancy-pants meal if that’s your jam, and move on when you’re ready. If you’re missing the feeling of being in Sri Lanka, take a few steps outside the fort and you’ll find the chaos of the city again.

#12 – Sri Maha Bodhi – Another cultural highlight in Sri Lanka.

• An ancient tree.
• More ancient tales.
• Like, a crazy important sacred site.

So, how does the oldest living human-planted tree in the world sound? Who planted it? One of the motherfucking tree-hugging ancient kings of Sri Lanka himself! Sri Maha Bodhi was planted from a cutting of the tree that Buddha gained enlightenment under.

The final level-up. Dude… that’s sick.

• Why it’s awesome: Did you miss the part about the ancient god-tree where sages smash the final boss of our suffering and impermanence? You’re in the heart of Anuradhapura now surrounded by some of Sri Lanka’s oldest temples so this is definitely a place to visit in Sri Lanka for those who are all about that cultural shizz-bizz.
• What to do there: Meditate…? Yeah, you can’t actually go right up to the tree (what I would give to hug that sucker) but you can go close! Or, if you prefer your meditation sessions without being stared at by throngs of Sinhalese devotees, you can go find a quieter spot. You’re in the heart of the temple complex so you’ll be able to find a lot of the old-world points of interest in Sri Lanka. Maha Viharaya , Jetavana , and Abhayagiri are the three big ones to hit up.

#13 – Jaffna – An uncommon place to visit in Sri Lanka off most backpacking itineraries.

• You’re in the war-strangled north.
• And predominantly Tamil territory.
• Apparently, the ganja is better…

There’s no way I can sum up Sri Lanka’s history here but it’s definitely worth learning about. That shit is super important.

Suffice to say, though Sri Lanka is predominantly home to Buddhist Sinhalese people with the other sub-group being the Tamils (who are mostly Hindu and Muslim). There are a helluva lot less Tamil people since the war, but Jaffna is home to one of the largest Tamil populations still on the island. It’s also a stark reminder of Sri Lanka’s darkness: it hasn’t always been tech-house and elephant tattoos.

• Why it’s awesome: The vibe is much closer to South Indian than Sri Lankan. South Indian spices in your rice and curry, red-ochre temples reminiscent of Hampi, and a bit less smiley (but the head wobbles just keep on coming). As you’ve gathered, it’s more cultural and historical points of interest in Sri Lanka, but the beautiful beaches stretch up this far too.
• What to do there: There are islands worth visiting in Jaffna just off the peninsula; Nainvatu Island has Nagadeepa Purana Vihara – another of Sri Lanka’s beautiful temples. For other good day trips from Jaffna, you can check out Kankesanthurai Beach and Keerimalai Pond – and old-style natural swimming pool – for some swimming with local vibes.

#14 – Yala National Park – For where to see leopards in Sri Lanka… maybe.

• The most famous national park in Sri Lanka.
• Beasties and safaris aplenty.
• One of the pricier choices of parks.

Ahhh, here’s the deal. This isn’t a ‘go out and explore’ variant of a national park. It’s a ‘pay a lot to enter the park and then pay more for a safari’ thing, and honestly, I just can’t get behind safaris.

I know this falls in a more ambiguous area than riding the elephants (don’t) and throngs of tourists posing with the turtles (please don’t) but my gut just doesn’t feel it. Maybe elsewhere in the world it’s different, but I don’t trust the safaris in Sri Lanka . I’ve observed enough of the culture and tourism in Sri Lanka regarding animals that I don’t back it. Gotta trust your gut.

But, putting aside cognitive dissonance, free will in a deterministic universe, and “maybe we’re all just stuck in a cave anyway” yum-jum, I still got a job to do.

• Why it’s awesome: The park is a beautiful place to visit in Sri Lanka, indeed, and different to many I’ve seen. Grassy plains and scrubby lowland lagoons roamed by elephants, crocodiles, buffaloes, and monkeys. Yep, it’s a place to see leopards in Sri Lanka, but they’re still crazy rare.
• What to do there: There are places to stay in Yala and some boutique hotels too. You can go on a safari, but exploring is a no-go. There are tonnes of safaris and traffic is busy… see what I mean?

Right, below I’m leaving a link to book a safari in Sri Lanka. I considered not dropping it from an ethical standpoint but I also believe people get to choose their own actions in an inconsequential universe. Ooph , there’s that cognitive dissonance again.

Plus, if you wanna go, you’re gonna go. You do you, man – still my ultimate creed.

However, keep in mind that the ethics of the wildlife tourism industry  is a quagmire littered with abuse and cruelty. Just think about it.

An Ethically-Sound Alternative to a Sri Lankan Safari: Millennium Elephant Foundation

That’s right – you can get up-close-and-personal with some of the most majestic beasts in Sri Lanka and not even feel a drop of moral anxiety about it!  Millennium Elephant Foundation is  ethical elephant tourism.

These guys don’t even let you ride the elephants. They used to let you ride them bareback, but now they’ve exchanged that program for their much more whimsical and respectable  Elephant Walk Experience . It’s kinda like a first date: you get to hang out, go for a romantic stroll with your partner elephant, and even help them bathe at the end if you’re lucky. ?

Was the first date divine? Then it’s time to commit because the  Elephant Foundation accepts volunteers too!  Not only will you get to hang out, care for, and bathe with the lovelies, but you’ll help out around the property too with farming, veterinary work, and teaching!

Honestly, there’s zero reason not to drop the cash you were going to spend on booking a safari on this instead. It’s  1000 times more  of an authentic experience,  1000 times less  morally reprehensible, and  100,000 times better  than sitting in a jeep staring slackjawed at wild animals that really just wish you’d piss off…

#15 – Kandy – A place to visit in Sri Lanka with a disclaimer.

• Cheap food!
• I think it’s pretty.

Here’s the disclaimer: most backpackers I’ve talked to were pretty disinterested in this destination in Sri Lanka. It’s kind of a place you have to travel to in Sri Lanka because for the famous train ride (yep, Kandy is in the guide too), and most reports range from “na…” to “meh…” .

But I like Kandy so fuck ya!

• Why it’s awesome: I just like it! There’s lots of cheap local food around – it’s a bubble-less city. I like the hills that surround the town and the way houses and temples jut above the treeline. ( Staying up in Kandy’s hills is super nice). Honestly, it’s kind of a weird comparison, but it kinda feels like an Asian Wellington… architecturally speaking.
• What to do there: Well, there’s definitely things to do in Kandy but nothing so spectacular that it feels worth a mention. Ooh, I know. Go get a burger (or wrap) from Licenced to Grill. They aren’t the best burgers I had in Sri Lanka, but they were the cheapest!

Ultimately, I still think it’s a much nicer alternative to staying Colombo . Did you notice how it’s not on this list?

#16 – Adam’s Peak – Arguably Sri Lanka’s holiest place to visit.

• Sri Lanka’s most sacred peak.
• A destination in Sri Lanka for tourists and pilgrims alike.
• Home to the  sri pada  (sacred footprint) formation.

I like ending lists on sexy mountains and this one is a real stunner! This is a day hike in Sri Lanka to properly test your mettle if only because you’ll be scaling 5,500 steps. And the view at the top? Oh sweet darling mountains, you do me wonders.

Adam’s Peak’s climbing season starts on the full moon in December and runs through until May. That said, climbing it outside of season is golden; the shoulder before December is the sweet spot. During peak season, the climb represents gridlock in Colombo.

• Why it’s awesome: Once you’re at the top, you’ll understand; it’s a truly unique place to visit in Sri Lanka. The clouds in Sri Lanka’s hill country really possess a breath of their own and, at the summit of Adams peak, you’re above them.
• What to do there: …Climb it? Outside pilgrim’s season you won’t be able to enter the temple and see the foot print but who cares… Take your shoes off and make your own!

Outside peak season, the lanterns won’t be lit so you’ll need a headlamp for climbing the peak for sunrise or sunset (which is definitely the time to climb). Luckily, there are shops along the way that sell them! (But you really should be travelling with one in your gear setup regardless.) That’s it: the 16 best places to visit in Sri Lanka. There are just 18 huts, each private and detached with spacious decks, some with great views of the surrounding landscape and ocean, some more cosy with plenty of privacy. All have plunge pools, outdoor showers, and bathtubs.

Uga Chena Huts is nestled in southern Sri Lanka between Yala National Park and the wildlife-rich Indian Ocean coastline. Located right on the beach, you can enjoy sundowners while looking over the waves. Please be aware that while staff can set up loungers for you on the beach, the area is not suitable for swimming.

Food and drink

Best places to travel on a budget - according to the Aussie dollar

It's easy to feel distressed when you're looking at how poorly the Australian Dollar is doing in some destinations .

Want to go to the United States , or the UK? You can look forward to bleeding money (while you load up on cheap carbs to fill the void).

The good news, of course, is that there are plenty of overseas destinations where the strong Aussie Dollar gives us more bang for our buck and lets us live like kings for a week or two.

Why not pack your bags and head to…

True, the Land of the Rising Sun has always been considered an expensive country for many Australian travellers, but with the Aussie Dollar at a decade-long high against the Japanese Yen, there's never been a better time to visit. 

Japan is never going to be on par with Vietnam, Cambodia or Indonesia, but travel within the next few months and you're likely to find decent accommodation in a ryokan for $50 a night, meals for less than $10, and beers for under $5, Remember too, that many attractions such as the country's famous shrines, are largely free, and that it's home to some of the best secondhand stores in the world.

South Africa 

We already know that a  South African safari is infinitely cheaper than one in Kenya or Tanzania, but a city break in the likes of Cape Town or Johannesburg can be surprisingly affordable for Australians too.

Earmark the likes of Table Mountain, Robben Island and Kalk Bay; you can expect to pay less than $30 per night for slick hotel accommodation (yes, you read that correctly), around $35 -$40 for a decent dinner for two, enjoy a flat white for $2.50 or pick up a bottle of red for $6.

All that and the knowledge that many of the country's attributes - those beaches and hiking trails - cost nothing at all.

It always blows my mind that Sri Lanka isn't right at the top of the travel wish list for Australians. It's ridiculously affordable, for one thing, but it also offers the perfect holiday for every kind of traveller, whether you're after a safari, a beach holiday, city colour and chaos or a rich history.

Now the peak tourist season here runs between December and April, so travel outside of that period and you're likely to find solid accommodation options around the country from around $20 (granted this pricing is more inline with local homestays) to $40 for moderate hotels and you can enjoy a casual (and oh-so-delicious) bite from as little as $4. 

Serviced by an extensive, economical network of trains and buses, getting around to all those beach towns and tea plantations is easy on the wallet too.

Fiji may always have your heart, but those seeking this powder white sands and azure water should look further afield to the Philippines , which is quietly earning the admiration of few fans globally with each passing day. 

Offering a blend of postcard perfect beach holidays (Boracay, for example), the vibrant city stays (Manilla, we see you), regular sale fares from the likes of Cebu Pacifi c and Philippine Airlines sweeten the deal, provided you can jump online the minute a sale is announced (those tickets sell out quickly).

On the ground, Australians can expect to pay as little as $60 per night for a waterfront resort in Boracay, or something significantly less for a smaller property inland. You can feast on street foods for less than $2, enjoy restaurant meals for under $10 and book a local day tour for around $50.

Remember too that we're talking Boracay pricing, some of the most expensive in the Philippines. Head anywhere else and you're going to see those figures decrease even further.

Like Bali, Vietnam can be one of those places where a person swears it's not for them (even though they've never visited) but then can't stop visiting again and again. It makes sense that the country would get under their skin of course - take a wealth of UNESCO World Heritage sites, surround them with luxury beach resort towns, lush mountain getaways and tranquil towns and add to that one of the world's tastiest cuisines, and you've got the perfect base for a holiday. That's without us even starting on the local tailoring industry which is frightfully cheap. 

Although it's recommended travellers visiting Vietnam budget for around $50 a day (less if you're really budgeting), it can be helpful to know that a budget hotel stay can cost as little as $10 - $15 a day, a bowl of noodles or banh mi will average between $4 - $5 and a cup of Vietnamese coffee just two glorious bucks a pop. 

Be sure to check out India, Fiji and somewhat surprisingly, New Zealand - all of which are currently offering great value for Aussie travellers.

Sri Lanka Tourism wins ‘Best Tourism Board’ at Global Tourism Awards 2024

India, August 02 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) has been awarded the prestigious "Best International Tourism Board" accolade at the Global Tourism Awards 2024, held in New Delhi, India today.

Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau said that this annual event, organized by Travel World Online (TWO), honors organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the tourism industry, shaping its landscape and driving positive change.

The award was presented to Chalaka Gajabahu, Chairman of SLTPB, in the presence of Minister of Tourism, Lands, Sports, and Youth Affairs Harin Fernando who attended as the Guest of Honour. 

The selection was made by a jury headed by Nakul Anand, former Executive Director of ITC.

Commenting on the achievement, Nalin Perera, Managing Director of SLTPB, expressed gratitude to the jury for recognizing the bureau’s dedication and commitment. 

He highlighted the bureau’s continuous promotional efforts to position Sri Lanka as a premier tourism destination. Perera also said that recent accolades and international endorsements from media and travel influencers have contributed to this prestigious recognition. He extended thanks to all stakeholders in the travel industry for their support.

Sri Lanka Tourism has seen significant growth, attracting 1,198,059 tourists up to July 31, 2024, marking a 56% increase compared to 2023. The bureau remains confident in reaching its target of 2.3 million tourists by the end of the year.

They say that the Proof Is In The Pudding. If we are the best, where have the tourists gone? The stats indicate that the flow is down to a trickle. It is also the quality of tourists too, We seem to attract tourists with almost empty pockets. :-) What made them to adjudicate that we are the best, I wonder???

scammers, money launderers, drug peddlers, prostitutes and others coming into the country as tourists, looks like they are in the count too!!! In many developed countries they make sure those coming into their country have accommodation booked or arranged and funds to support them through their entire stay. all suspected entries are grilled at the luggage checking area and if required taken for further questioning into a room. If they feel the passenger is not being honest, they call up the contact/s given to see if the responses are accurate, as some foolish come in with information on their phones or documents, letters/addresses which at times are evidence they have come in to work.

You gave got to be joking! It is definitely an early April Fools joke. Everything Harin "touches" turns to s..t. The tourism industry is thriving because of bloggers who think spending Rupees 350 on food that could give a person food poisoning is good value.

The credit should go to Arin who wants to make Sri Lanka a part of India. He will soon get the Indian citizenship. Tourists don't even have proper toilet facilities at places such as Sigiriya rock eventhough they are charged a heafty sum of 35 usd. Tourists visiting Sri Lanka have been doing a great job promoting the island. We don't need a Tourist Board and a minister like Arin.
