Speaking of the image of Osaka in Japan, the atmosphere that is full of humanity and vibrancy, full of laughter at the Kansai dialect. There are many funny people who acts comedy focusing on the interactions between a “funny man” and a “straight man” naturally with big laugh. Also, they are city of a merchant who loves "flour" such as okonomiyaki and takoyaki, and is symbolized by the conversation "Making profit margin" "Bank dan". Anyway, it is quite different from Tokyo. One of the Osaka-like tourist attractions is “Shin Sekai” area. Symbolic Tower of Tsutenkaku, Japanese pub with a huge puffer papier mache hanging in the air, and shopping districts where eating dishes at small shops such as kushikatsu (Deep fried skewers) are showing bustling. In a sense, this area creates a jumble, Asian-style atmosphere. (Actually, there are a lot of deep GAY VENUE in this area) Also, USJ(Universal Studio Japan) and Osaka Castle (the building is new as it is a reconstructed castle), big shopping/entertainment area “Dotonbori” are standard sightseeing spots. Apart from Osaka that everyone imagines, there are places like gay people who are filled with hidden places, aesthetic sense and education. For example, if you go to Nakanoshima, you can experience the historical and cultural atmosphere of the National Museum of Art, the central public hall and other retro buildings, rose gardens and more. There are world class level museum such as Toyo Ceramics Art Museum and Nakanoshima Kaetsuki Art Museum. I bet you will not get tired of having a day in there. Further more, there is Osaka municipal art museum in Tennoji area, Ukiyoe pavilion in Dotonbori area. We also recommend the Asuka Museum, which is the core cultural facility of nearby “Chikatsu Asuka”, a treasure trove of ancient tombs, which is also called the ruins museum entire area. "Towers of the Hades" is designed by Ando Tadao – world famous Japanese architect. If you go to the Expo Park in Suita area, there is the "Tower of the Sun" famous for Japan's proud artist Taro Okamoto and it is now possible to view the interior. Osaka originally flourished from the Edo era by the upper culture. Ukiyo-e painting called upper drawing was also produced, and upper Kabuki and Bunraku (Traditional puppet theater) were popular as well. The upper literature such as "Sonezaki Shinju(The love suicides at Sonezaki)" of Chikamatsu Monzaemon and Irihara Saikakura "Koshoku Ichidaiotoko (Life of an Amorous Man)" are also famous. Lastly, as said in the word "Kyoto people ate extravagant in dress, Osaka people in food", Osaka is a city of food. There are "Umaimon (Tasty) shop" from side to side all the way, starting from a fine-dining traditional Japanese restaurant, to Okonomiyaki shop behind alleys and standing eating udon noodles. Please eat lots of delicious foods in Osaka!

Osaka has 2nd largest gay scene in Japan. There are more than 100 gay bars in Osaka, which are distributed in three areas: Kita (Doyama), Minami (Namba), Shin Sekai. Doyama area (Like Shinjuku 2chome in Tokyo) has many gay bars concentrate, gay club, there are adult shop, host bar, sauna, center for HIV prevention enlightenment, etc. Gay night on every weekend at the gay club with various themes are held, and a lot of drag queen, GOGO BOY, DJ are active. Minami and the Shin Sekai's gay bar are scattered in a noticeable manner in the city, many middle-aged and elderly customers. When you honor the history of Osaka's gay scenes, its innovation will come to light. Firstly, in the 1950s, "Takeonoya Ryokan" opened in Nishinari of Osaka, which became the origin of Japanese "Cruising Spot". In 1989, Japan's first (also Japan's oldest and longest-lived )drag queen party "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER" started at the club in Osaka (It moved to Kyoto and still continuing now.). This is starting from where Mr. Teiji Furuhashi, performance group "dump type" knew Drag Queen at NY's gay club and brought back the culture back to Japan (note that Mr. Furuhashi Teiji is passed away in AIDS in 1995, during legendary performance "S / N " that went around 15 countries abroad) In 1999, a large party "DIVA JAPAN" was held for the first time in Osaka (We guess it was conscious of Wigstock in NY), where the drag queen gathered from all over Japan and will showcase one after another At the same time, a center "dista" for HIV preventive awareness for gay and bisexual men was established in Douyama, an event combining club parties and art exhibitions with HIV examinations was held for the first time in Japan. We do not know if the tradition of upper culture and the vibrancy of the city of Osaka are related to such advanced nature, the enthusiasm for the advancement, but the gay community of Osaka (mainly in Kansai) will definitely create a good culture same as Tokyo. If you come to Osaka, please enjoy the bustlingness of the gay bar and the warm atmosphere. Also, if it is a weekend, we recommend an event held at a gay club such as "EXPLOSION" (Gay night will be held in a bigger number several times a year.) Please check EVENT page. There are about 10 lesbian bars in Osaka, and several women's only parties are also held. There is also a showpub where the MtF transgender is open for straight, a bar where the FtM guests serve, and a bar of the LGBT MIX. Regardless of gender or sexuality, it can be said to the whole of Japan, but there are not many shops that can respond in foreign languages. This site introduces an English available bar (Please check BAR page)

Osaka is a foodie's paradise

While there are a ton of great restaurants in Osaka, there are also a few “must-try” street food recipes when visiting the city. Perhaps Osaka’s most well-known and iconic street food is takoyaki. Small pieces of octopus are fried in savory pancake balls and topped with sauces. Walking through Dotonbori, you may even see some locals carrying piles of takoyaki with heaps of green onion or poached egg on top. Another favorite is okonomiyaki. Made with flour, eggs, tempura scraps, cabbage, pork belly, and topped with a variety of condiments, okonomiyaki is best enjoyed in restaurants with griddles for the centers of the tables to cook right in front of you, and an Asahi on the side. Lastly, kushikatsu is Osaka’s traditional fried food. A variety of meats, vegetables, and fish are individually skewered, coated with panko, and deep-fried for enjoyment. You can find a delicious assortment of kushikatsu at restaurants all around Osaka and street vendors alike. If you’re feeling adventurous, stop by the Jumbo-Tsuribune Tsurikichi in Shinsekai. Walking by, you’ll see huge pools of water filled with different kinds of fish. Customers actually get to catch their own fish for their meal! We went in to give it a try, and after 40 minutes of attempting to catch a fish, I gave up and just ordered a nice meal off the menu. It was both hilarious and entertaining. Unexpectedly, we had a blast – and the food was great.

Royal Classic Osaka (left) and Hotel Zentis (right)

There are thousands of hotels in Osaka. The choices can seem to most a bit overwhelming. We made our selection based on location and comfort, which is how we landed at The Royal Classic Osaka . Giving new life to the historic Shin-Kabukiza kabuki theater, the hotel is a towering figure in the Namba district and just a five-minute walk from Dotonbori, Osaka’s most prominent and well-known neighborhood. Famous for its neon signs and delicious street food, it’s exactly where we wanted to stay – in the middle of Japan’s urban madness. Opening in 2019, the modern hotel kept its original facade and structure of old kabuki theater which highlights its royal appearance amongst the surrounding modern skyscrapers. Rising to the 18th floor, the view took our breath away as we looked out amongst countless buildings for as far as our eyes could see. With floor-to-ceiling windows, we felt as if we could stay there and watch the city for hours. But after getting settled in, our stomachs begged us to venture out, so we started our exploration of the city. Other fantastic hotels in the area are the Swissotel Nankai and the Centara Grand Hotel . Both border alongside Namba Parks, an enormous outdoor shopping mall with beautiful city views. Outside of the city center, Hotel Zentis is another fantastic accommodation in Dojimahama, and just minutes away by subway to all the attractions near Dotonobori.

Views from the Omeda Sky Building

The LGBTQ+ culture in Osaka is unlike any other place in the world. Not knowing much about how gay-friendly Osaka was, I started my trip skeptical. However, once I learned that most bars in Osaka are small enough only to fit seven to ten people, and are literally stacked on top of each other, I was intrigued. With over 300 gay bars throughout the city, Osaka’s LGBTQ+ culture is alive and well. The most notorious gayborhood, Doyamacho is located within walking distance of Umeda station and is completely packed with informal bars known as izakayas with plenty of opportunities for karaoke. Our favorites include GrandSlam and Frenz FrenZY Rainbow Haven , the latter we had a blast meeting other travelers over a game of Mario Kart. The gay culture isn’t just limited to one neighborhood. There are gay bars and clubs throughout the city. Near Dotonbori, Cafe LA hosts drag shows in collaboration with the local drag group, Haus of Kinki . In Namba, Bar DADDY is a cozy cocktail bar located on the 4th story of an unassuming building. The bartender is welcoming, and friendly, and might even cook you up a meal. Osaka’s LGBTQ+ scene is eclectic, crazy, and so much fun. No matter what establishment you may be walking into, it’s sure to be a surprise as there’s no telling what to expect when exploring Osaka’s nightlife.

Osaka Castle (left) and Shitenno-ji Temple (right)

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of Osaka. The city is a sprawl, and from a high view looks endless. So what better way to see the city than from one of the best views in the city? The Umeda Sky Building is an architectural wonder – two 40-story skyscrapers connected at the top by a donut-shaped viewing center. Escalators and glass elevators zigzag through the wide atrium between the two buildings. Opening most days at 9:30 a.m., it’s best to arrive early to beat the crowds. Out of everything there is to see in Osaka, we were extremely excited to explore Shinsekai, the district just adjacent to Shitenno-ji Temple . Reminiscent of early 20th-century Japan, Shinsekai was supposed to become a showcase of the Japanese industrial revolution and an attraction for tourists from all over the world. Now, divided into North and South, the district is an eclectic mix of buildings that almost resembles a carnival. Half of the district is modeled after Paris while the other half is modeled after Coney Island. At the center, Tsutenkaku Tower is visible from every corner of the neighborhood. Modeled after the Eiffel Tower, there’s even a 60-meter slide you can ride down while getting glorious views from above.

A Namba alley at night

Apart from Osaka’s modern wonders, there are a few great sites to explore that honor Japan’s historic past and provide great photo opportunities. Shitenno-ji Temple, Osaka Castle , and Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine are a few of the most sought-after attractions in the city for their beauty and history. For a great night photography opportunity, check out TeamLabs Botanical Gardens . TeamLabs creates incredible visual and audio experiences through interactive art pieces. In the gardens, we were immersed in a forest full of other-worldly light displays, music, and sound from every direction. Amongst the displays are statues that modify the area when you touch them. Wandering through the natural scenery and exhibits, it’s an experience for the senses and makes for great photos.

Inside the Swissotel Nankai, there’s a bar on the top floor overlooking the city. We decided to stop by Bar 36 during happy hour for a cocktail. Once we arrived at the 36th floor, we stepped out to find shelves and shelves of plants growing in a hydroponic system. The urban garden was full of herbs and vegetables that Bar 36 uses for their recipes and cocktails. What was so striking about it was the juxtaposition of the urban garden against the windows that looked out over the city. Even amongst an urban jungle, there’s a soilless garden that’s thriving better than mine back home! As the sun set over Osaka, we walked around Bar 36, looking in each direction as we watched the neon lights switch on in Dotonbori. Between the cocktails made with fresh ingredients and the panoramic views, the memory reminds me of just how much the city of Osaka surprised me as an innovative, warm, and vibrant destination.

Gay Osaka – The Nomadic Boys

Gay Osaka - The Nomadic Boys

Do you want to know why they really call Osaka the Kitchen of Japan? It’s because once you see all of those scrumptious boys wandering about the city, you will be left hungry for more!

Of course… We’re sure the delicious cuisine helps to bring the point home! As the foodie capital of the entire country, you will find the best of the best in terms of classic Japanese dishes such as takoyaki and okonomiyaki. But, among the bustling food stalls and restaurants, you will also be introduced to stunning, modern architecture and a gay nightlife culture supported by kindhearted, welcoming locals.

Since it is located alongside the ports of Honshu, Osaka essentially functions as the primary commercial center for Japan. However, the city is still a close neighbor of Kyoto and Tokyo, which means that it tends to fly under the radar of travelers seeking a grand Asian adventure. But today, we’re here to plead on behalf of Osaka. We want to highlight exactly why gay travelers should be calling this fantastic destination their next hot vacation spot.

With the second-largest LGBTQ+ scene in Japan and a friendly atmosphere that promotes total self-expression, gay Osaka will surely provide you with enough pleasant memories to last a lifetime. With the help of our comprehensive guide, we can ensure you an Osaka trip packed full of only the-can’t-miss stops for LGBTQ travelers. Prepare to be enveloped in a city that offers the comforts of both a metropolitan area and a natural, historical getaway!

Is Gay Osaka Safe for Travelers?

We found Japan to be very safe for gay travelers, including Osaka. Whilst LGBTQ rights still have far to go in Japan, by Asian standards the country easily ranks as one of the most gay friendly Asian countries.

The Japanese are very conservative people and even straight couples limit public displays of affection, so it would pay to respect this. Having said that, the Japanese are extremely respectful people, particularly to foreigners. As an openly gay couple, we found people in gay Osaka to be super sweet. At no stage did we ever have any problems checking into a hotel or requesting a double bed in any of the places we stayed at. Osaka is even home to the first government district in the country to officially support LGBT human rights.
