A top official has highlighted the benefits of allowing visit visa holders to work legally in the UAE . A work permit in this regard and other legal conditions could be established to allow employers to hire visitors legally.

As per current rules, working while in the UAE on a visit visa is illegal. Hefty fines and other penalties apply on companies that hire visitors. Companies have to get an employment visa and work permit issued before an employee starts working for them.

Dr Ali Humaid bin Khatem, advocate-general, head of Naturalisation and Residency Prosecution, said allowing companies to hire visitors legally would help create a mutually beneficial relationship. "Business owners need a start and our country has a lot of tourists looking for jobs. This way, both parties can benefit." He made the suggestion at the Entrepreneurship Makers Forum hosted by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai in Al Khawaneej earlier this week.

The official, however, cautioned business owners against employing visitors as the current laws don’t allow it.

“[A] visit or tourist entry permit/visa does not give you the right to work in the UAE. A Dh50,000 fine per individual is levied against any enterprise found employing a person on a visit visa,” he said. "Never start off wrong, these regulations and laws were designed to protect business owner and employees.”

Fake Emiratisation

During a panel discussion at the forum, Dr Ali Humaid also expressed concerns about bogus Emiratisation. Emiratisation is considered fake when a UAE national works in a nominal job without real tasks; it’s done solely to meet a company’s Emiratisation targets. It is also deemed fake if a UAE national is rehired in the same company to circumvent Emiratisation targets.

In November last year, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation said it referred 113 private companies to the Public Prosecution for violating Emiratisation decisions. These included 98 private companies that appointed citizens in bogus Emiratisation posts.

Challenges faced

The second edition of the Entrepreneurship Makers Forum discussed the most prominent challenges faced by young businesspeople and ways to address them.

Lieutenant-General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, director-general of the GDRFA, highlighted how content creators “bear a significant responsibility to bolster entrepreneurial innovators, amplify their influence, and empower them”.

Essam Lootah, CEO of Imtiaz Service, discussed the crucial role of legislation and legal frameworks in supporting youth initiatives and strengthening sustainable development.

Dubai work visa and permit

How to get your work permit and work visa in Dubai

  • Eligibility
  • Visa Requirements

Expatriates working in the UAE need to have a valid work permit and work visa to legally be employed in the country. Individuals who are in the UAE on a work visa don’t require additional residence visas. The work visas allow you to legally reside in the country for the stipulated period. Here is how you can get a Dubai work visa and permit.

How to Apply for a Work Visa in Dubai

One of the key things to understand about working in the UAE is that the work visa or employment permit is provided by the employer. As an employee, you don’t apply for such visas or permits on your own. If you are seeking job opportunities in the emirate, you can kick start your job search, check out our step-by-step by guide on how to find a job in Dubai . You can also seek jobs through websites and portals and we have also compiled a list of the most useful job sites in the UAE .

Once you find that perfect opportunity, it’s time to move on to the second step.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) issues work permits in Dubai. Your employer has to apply for this permit, which is then converted into a valid residency visa. Once you get the residence visa, the work permit allows you to enter the UAE and work there. This permit is valid for two months. During this time, your employer will have to arrange formalities like medical testing, Emirates ID, Labour Card and residency visa.

The residency visa primarily is a clear piece of evidence that you are sponsored by the organisation and that it has paid for your work permit, medical testing and Emirates ID.

Once you receive your residence visa, you can sponsor your family and bring them into the country.  This includes single mothers as well. In addition, men sponsored by wives in UAE can also get a work permit.

Who can apply for a work visa in Dubai?

Application for Dubai work visa

Three conditions decide whether or not expats need a Dubai working visa. You’ll need one if:

  • You have been hired while you are still in your country
  • A job opportunity comes up when you are in Dubai on a visit visa or tourist visa
  • You are already working in Dubai and want to switch companies

In the first instance, MoHRE and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation have set up centres outside the country to facilitate this process.

In the second instance, you can obtain your Dubai work permit by exiting the UAE. You don’t necessarily have to fly back home. Airlines such as Air Arabia and FlyDubai offer you a ‘visa run’ facility in which you can stopover at a neighbouring country (such as Oman) till you obtain a work permit in Dubai.

The hiring company can also avail of the ‘Change Status’ process by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDFRA) in Dubai. In this scenario, you do not have to leave the country to obtain the work permit in Dubai.

In the third instance, you also get a new work permit to join a new company. As per Article 1 of Ministerial Decree No. 766 of 2015, an employee whose contract was terminated because of expiry of contract is eligible for a new work permit in Dubai, provided they are able to secure a new career opportunity.

As per the amended UAE’s Labour Law No. 8 of 1980, you need to be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for the work permit in Dubai.

Dubai Work Permit Visa Requirements

You need the following to obtain your work permit in Dubai:

  • Photograph against a white background
  • Copy of passport (which is valid for at least six months)
  • Copy of education certificates required for the job (this has to be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country)

Medical Testing

Along with the Dubai work permit visa requirements, you also need to take medical fitness tests at government-approved health centres in Dubai. This is necessary both for new work visa applicants as well as renewals. You will have to take a blood test and get an x-ray of your chest to screen for pulmonary tuberculosis.

Medical test for Dubai work visa

Note that certain occupations in Dubai also require that you test negative for Hepatitis B and syphilis. The best way to go about this is to have these tests done in your country to save your time. This is because if you happen to have any of these communicable diseases, you will be required to leave the country.

What is the Dubai work permit visa processing time?

Ideally, you can receive your work permit in Dubai within a week. Of course, this depends on various factors.

What is the validity of my work visa in Dubai?

The duration of a residence visa depends on your sponsor as well as the nature of your employment. It is issued for one, or two or three years. If you’re wondering “ how to check my visa status in UAE “, you can do it online via ICA Smart Services.

What is the Dubai work permit fees?

The new work permit fee is AED 100. You can find the complete list of new work permit fees in the UAE here.

How to avoid visa frauds and scam?

It is possible to encounter visa fraud when you are working in Dubai. But there are several ways to steer clear of these instances. For example, genuine employers have to offer you a letter issued by MoHRE. You can also check the legal status of your company in the National Economic Register online.

Likewise, you can verify the validity of your permit and visa on GDRFA. In any case, you can always reach out to MoHRE at their contact number (+971-680-27666) or website to have your queries addressed.

This wraps up our guide on how you can get your Dubai work visa and work permit. As mentioned above, obtaining your Emirates ID is an important part of the process, and we have also prepared a guide on the Emirates ID for your convenience.

Once you obtain your residence visa, you can sponsor your parents, spouse or children in Dubai. You can read all about family visa charges in Dubai on our blog as well.

UAE new visa rules 2022: what do the changes mean for jobs, families and tourism?

Rules governing the ways people work and live in the uae were approved in april.

The UAE is offering new types of visa, including options for long-stay tourists, jobseekers, accomplished professionals, star students and high-net-worth individuals. Wam

Latest: New visa rules predicted to create a flood of jobseekers in the UAE

New rules governing the ways people work and live in the UAE come into effect today, Monday October 3.

Approved by the Cabinet in April, this is one of the biggest shake-ups to the country’s immigration policy in years.

Longer visit visas for tourists , long-term residency for sought-after professionals and easy access to the 10-year Golden Visa scheme were among the headline changes.

But what does this all mean, and does any of it affect or benefit you? Here The National breaks down the changes.

Is the Golden Visa changing?

Golden Visa services have a dedicated portal here , on the federal immigration website. Abu Dhabi’s service can be found here .

No costs have yet been released, but some require a deposit of between Dh1,500 and Dh2,000.

Business Extra podcast: What are the UAE's new visa rules?

Business Extra podcast: What are the UAE's new visa rules?

What happened?

The Cabinet approved the “executive regulations” of the Federal Decree-Law on Entry and Residence of Foreigners.

This put into motion the creation of new visas and formally approved others, such as the Golden Visa residency system , that had already been rolled out.

Many of the details were made public over the previous 18 months but the new elements include a 60-day entry visa for many tourists and allowing parents to continue to sponsor disabled children when they reach adulthood.

Who are the new visa rules aimed at?

Golden visas

The country’s leaders want to attract more skilled professionals, those with medicine and science backgrounds, the brightest students and tech-savvy minds to live in the Emirates.

Wealthy investors, entrepreneurs and company owners are sought after. Officials hope they will set down roots, invest in property and make the country their long-term home.

The wide range of 10 visa types may benefit many residents and people planning to make the country home.

There are several visa types that are aimed at these groups, including Golden Visas, which were first approved in late 2020. In the first year, 44,000 visas were issued in Dubai alone.

“The golden visa for an ownership of Dh2 million on real estate will definitely be a major boost for middle and higher segments to invest in the UAE through real estate or other sources," said Vijay Valecha, chief investment officer of Century Financial Consultancy.

Who is eligible for a UAE Golden Visa under new rules?

Who is eligible for a UAE Golden Visa under new rules?

Green visas

In the middle-income bracket are green visas , which are aimed at skilled workers, freelancers and the self-employed. These grant the holder five years’ residency.

To be eligible, an applicant requires a monthly salary of Dh15,000 and a bachelor's degree in certain skilled fields, including science, law, education, culture or social sciences, among others.

Someone who currently holds a two or three-year trade licence for freelance work may find this option attractive, but the costs have not yet been set out.

A green visa holder can sponsor relatives for residency for five years. Previously, this was typically allowed for two years.

Ajman, United Arab Emirates - Reporter: Anam Rizvi. News. Andalus Abdulwahhab celebrates out the sunroof of her car before her drive through graduation from Ajman University because of Covid-19. Wednesday, February 10th, 2021. Ajman. Chris Whiteoak / The National

There is no specific provision for lower-income and lower-skilled workers to secure special visas. But jobseeker and five-year multi-entry visas may benefit people who wish to move to the Emirates, or join family here.

In particular, this could benefit people from countries that require paid-for visas in advance of flying, such as India, Pakistan, Philippines and Bangladesh. Officials did not say how long a jobseeker visa was valid for, but previously said six months when it was mooted before the pandemic.

Primarily, it is aimed at “young talent and skilled professionals”. Recent graduates from the world’s top 500 universities are included in this category.

“The abolishment of needing a sponsor or host for a visit visa is a big step to prompt young individuals to come to the UAE for job opportunities,” Mr Valecha said.

Family sponsorship

Last year, authorities allowed parents to sponsor their male children until they were 25 instead of 18.

The decision in April appears to affirm that and to add new provisions, allowing parents with a disabled child to sponsor them into adulthood. Parents can continue to sponsor unmarried daughters at any age.

Why are these changes being made?

The government hopes to attract more highly skilled people to live in the Emirates and build a bigger “knowledge economy”.

Scientists, coders and tech workers and just some of the professionals it hopes to attract.

Population growth is also high on the agenda.

Dubai alone wants to boost its 3.5 million residents to 5.8 million by 2040.

The country further wants to rapidly bounce back from the Covid pandemic , welcoming back millions more tourists. Allowing people to stay more easily for longer aids all of these goals.

Does any of this affect me?

If you are a salaried employee working for a company you are likely to stay on a regular two and three-year visa.

Employees may find they are eligible to secure a Golden Visa, particularly if nominated by a friend or acquaintance with that visa. Their status with their employer would not be affected and health insurance would continue to be provided as standard.

Who is eligible for a Golden Visa?

There is no exhaustive list of every job category.

You can apply here on the website of the Federal Authority for Identity using your Emirates ID and see if you are eligible.

Or you can be nominated directly by someone you know who already has a Golden Visa.

The list of eligible professionals and qualifications includes people in science, technology, arts, culture and the creative industries. People investing Dh1 million to Dh2 million in property also have several options.

Who pays for a visa?

Most of the new visas on the list are aimed at freelancers, self-employed people and business owners, who would foot the bill for their own visa or arrange through their own company.

Golden Visas have already processed payments in the hundreds or low thousands of dirhams.

It’s important to note that by law a regular employee working for a company cannot be made to pay for a basic residency visa.

‘Many roles take months to secure’

CEOINSPIRESELECTION- Louise Vine, Managing Director, Inspire Selection during a photo shoot in Dubai on Tuesday, March 19, 2018. Photo by Dhes Handumon

Louise Vine, managing director at Inspire Selection recruitment agency in Dubai, earlier this year said the recruitment process for professional roles, and particular senior roles, can take months.

“It gives people a purpose to come here and it helps the government understand they are on a mission to find a job, rather than being here as a tourist,” she said.

The duration, which has not yet been announced, will be important.

Depending on the level of the role, recruitment can take anything from a few weeks to several months, she said.

“You would need potentially three to six months to find a senior role in certain industries,” Ms Vine said.

“There are fewer jobs and also the interview process is quite lengthy, so it’s not just one interview and job done. It could be four or five interviews and case studies to prepare for, so it takes time.”

Eligibility Criteria

Age and health requirements.

uae tourist visa to work visa

To be eligible for a work employment visa in the UAE , applicants typically must be at least 18 years old.

Additionally, individuals should be in good health and free from any contagious diseases.

A medical examination may be required as part of the visa application process to ensure compliance with health standards.

Educational Qualifications

uae tourist visa to work visa

Many job categories in the UAE require specific educational qualifications or professional certifications.

Applicants must possess the necessary educational credentials relevant to their chosen profession.

These qualifications are often verified during the visa application process.

Criminal Background Check

uae tourist visa to work visa

Applicants must have a clean criminal record and provide a certificate of good conduct from their home country or the country they have been residing in for the past few years.

Any criminal history can result in visa rejection or complications.

Employment Offer

uae tourist visa to work visa

To obtain a work employment visa, individuals must have a genuine job offer from a UAE-based employer.

This offer should include details of the position, salary, benefits, and terms and conditions of employment.

The employer plays a crucial role as the visa sponsor.

Financial Requirements

uae tourist visa to work visa

Applicants should demonstrate financial sta bility or the ability to support themselves while in the UAE.

This may involve providing bank statements or other financial documents as proof of financial capability.

The exact financial requirements can vary depending on the job category and the emirate in which one intends to work.

Meeting these eligibility criteria is fundamental to securing a work employment visa in the UAE.

It’s essential for applicants to ensure they fulfill these requirements and prepare all necessary documentation to avoid delays or complications during the application process.

Employment Contract And Offer Letter

uae tourist visa to work visa

An employment contract and offer letter are critical documents in the process of obtaining a work employment visa in the UAE.

These documents serve as a legal and professional foundation for the employment relationship between the employer and the employee.

An employment contract is a formal agreement that outlines the terms and conditions of employment.

It typically includes details such as the job title, responsibilities, working hours, compensation, benefits, and termination conditions.

This contract must adhere to UAE labor laws and regulations , ensuring that both parties’ rights and obligations are clearly defined and protected.

The offer letter, on the other hand, is a written communication from the employer to the prospective employee.

It officially extends the job offer, confirming the position’s details , salary, and other terms. The offer letter should also specify the conditions under which the offer may be revoked or terminated.

Both the employment contract and offer letter are crucial for the visa application process , as they provide evidence of a genuine employment opportunity in the UAE.

These documents are often required by the authorities as part of the visa application package.

Additionally, they help prevent misunderstandings and disputes between the employer and the employee, establishing a clear framework for the working relationship.

It’s important for both parties to review and understand the employment contract and offer letter thoroughly before signing.

Any discrepancies or concerns should be addressed and resolved before proceeding.

Once signed, these documents play a pivotal role in facilitating the issuance of a work employment visa, making them integral components of the UAE’s immigration and employment process.

Sponsorship And Employer Responsibility

In the context of obtaining a work employment visa in the UAE, sponsorship and employer responsibility are pivotal aspects of the process.

Sponsorship refers to the legal relationship established between the employer (the sponsor) and the foreign employee.

This sponsorship system is a fundamental requirement for obtaining a work visa in the UAE.

The sponsor, typically the employer, assumes significant responsibilities throughout the visa process and the duration of the employee’s stay in the UAE.

First and foremost, the sponsor is responsible for initiating and processing the employee’s visa application, including obtaining the necessary approvals and permits from relevant government authorities.

Once the employee arrives in the UAE, the sponsor remains responsible for the employee’s well-being and legal status.

This includes providing suitable accommodation , ensuring compliance with labor laws, and facilitating the renewal of the employee’s visa as needed.

The sponsor must also be responsive to any changes in the employee’s employment status, such as job transfers or terminations , and update the relevant authorities accordingly.

Employer responsibility extends to the employee’s welfare , ensuring access to healthcare and adherence to safety regulations at the workplace.

The sponsor is also accountable for the employee’s adherence to UAE laws and regulations, including financial obligations, ensuring that the employee does not engage in any activities that violate the terms of their visa.

Types Of Work Visas

uae tourist visa to work visa

Employment Visa (Work Permit)

The Employment Visa, also known as the Work Permit, is the most common type of work visa in the UAE.

It is issued to expatriate employees sponsored by an Emirati employer.

This visa allows individuals to work in a specific job with a designated employer for a specified period.

Freelance Permits

Freelance Permits are designed for self-employed individuals and freelancers in the UAE. This type of visa allows professionals to work independently without being tied to a specific employer.

It’s a viable option for consultants, artists, and entrepreneurs looking to operate their businesses.

Investor or Partner Visas

Investor or Partner Visas are granted to individuals who invest a significant amount of capital in a UAE-based business or become a partner in a local company.

These visas offer the flexibility to engage in business activities in the UAE and are often linked to business ownership.

Student and Graduate Visas

Student Visas are issued to foreign students enrolled in recognized educational institutions in the UAE.

These visas allow students to pursue their studies.

Graduate Visas may also be available to recent graduates to explore employment opportunities after completing their education.

Mission Visa or Temporary Work Permit

Mission Visas or Temporary Work Permits are typically issued for short-term assignments or specific projects.

These visas are often obtained by foreign professionals and employees of international companies temporarily working in the UAE for a limited duration.

The Application Process

uae tourist visa to work visa

The application process for obtaining a work employment visa in the UAE is a well-structured and regulated procedure that involves several crucial steps.

Here’s an overview of the process:

It begins with a job offer from a UAE-based employer, outlining the terms and conditions of employment.

Both the employer and employee must prepare and gather the necessary documents, including passport copies, educational certificates, and the employment contract.

The employer, serving as the sponsor, initiates the visa application by submitting the employee’s documents to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) or the relevant free zone authority, depending on the company’s location.

Upon review, the MOHRE or free zone authority grants labor approval, verifying that the employment complies with UAE labor laws.

Once approved, the sponsor applies for an Entry Permit , allowing the employee to enter the UAE legally for work purposes.

Upon arrival, the employee undergoes a status change process, converting the entry permit into a residence visa.

This process includes medical examinations and obtaining a residence stamp in the passport.

Employees must also obtain an Emirates ID , a national identity card required for all residents in the UAE.

Medical insurance coverage, provided by the employer in accordance with UAE labor laws, is a mandatory component during the visa application process.

The employee’s residence visa is stamped in their passport after completing all necessary medical examinations and providing required documents.

Depending on the employment contract’s duration , visa renewal may be necessary.

This typically involves renewing the employment contract and paying applicable fees.

When the employment term ends or in the event of job changes, both the employer and employee must follow proper exit procedures, including visa cancellation and clearance from the UAE’s labor authorities.

Throughout the employment period, it is essential for both parties to adhere to UAE labour laws and visa regulations.

Non-compliance can result in penalties or legal issues.

Navigating the work employment visa application process in the UAE involves multiple steps and requires careful attention to detail.

Both the employer and the employee play vital roles in ensuring a smooth and legally compliant transition into the UAE’s workforce.

Document Requirements

uae tourist visa to work visa

Document requirements are a crucial aspect of the UAE’s work employment visa application process.

Ensuring that all necessary documents are prepared and submitted accurately is essential for a smooth and successful visa application.

Here’s an overview of the key document requirements:

1. Passport: A valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity is mandatory for visa application.

2. Photographs: Recent passport-sized photographs to UAE visa photo specifications are needed.

3. Educational Certificates : Copies of educational certificates and diplomas relevant to the job position are typically required, and they may need to be attested or legalized.

4. Employment Contract : A signed employment contract specifying job role, responsibilities, salary, benefits, and terms and conditions of employment is essential.

5. Offer Letter : The offer letter from the employer, confirming the job offer and its terms, is necessary.

6. Labor Approval : The labor approval issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) or the relevant free zone authority is a critical document.

7. Entry Permit: The Entry Permit, which allows entry into the UAE for employment purposes, is obtained after labor approval.

8. Medical Records: Medical records, including medical examination reports and certificates, are needed to ensure the applicant’s health complies with UAE regulations .

9. Emirates ID Application: The application for an Emirates ID , a national identity card, is submitted during the visa process.

10. Proof of Health Insurance: Proof of health insurance coverage, provided by the employer, is required as per UAE labor laws.

11. Bank Statements : Bank statements or financial documentation may be requested to demonstrate financial capability during the stay in the UAE.

12. Passport Copies of Dependents: If applicable, passport copies and documents for dependents, such as spouse and children , are required for their visa applications.

13. Criminal Background Check : A certificate of good conduct or a criminal background check certificate is necessary to verify the applicant’s clean record.

14. Legalized Documents : Some documents may require legalization or attestation by relevant authorities in the home country, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UAE embassy.

15. Application Forms: Completed visa application forms provided by the employer or relevant authorities must be submitted accurately.

16. Additional Documents: Depending on the specific job and individual circumstances, additional documents, such as marriage certificates or professional licenses , may be necessary.

Medical Examination And Health Insurance

uae tourist visa to work visa

Medical examination and health insurance are integral aspects of the UAE’s work employment visa process, designed to protect the well-being of employees and uphold health standards in the country.

Upon arrival in the UAE, visa applicants are typically required to undergo a medical examination.

This examination assesses their overall health and screens for infectious diseases , such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

The health certificate issued after a successful examination is a crucial document for the visa application, verifying the applicant’s fitness for employment in the UAE.

Health insurance is mandated by UAE labor laws, placing the responsibility on employers to provide coverage for their employees.

This insurance encompasses a wide range of healthcare services , including outpatient and inpatient care, dental treatments , maternity benefits, and emergency medical services.

It often includes access to a network of approved healthcare providers, ensuring convenient and quality healthcare services.

Employers bear the cost of health insurance premiums , relieving employees of this financial burden.

Some employers may extend coverage to the employee’s dependents, enhancing the overall well-being of the employee and their family.

In case of medical treatment, insured employees or their dependents can avail services within the insurance network and initiate the claim process for reimbursement .

This system offers protection against unexpected health crises and ensures that individuals can access necessary medical care promptly.

Health insurance in the UAE also covers preventive care, encouraging regular health check-ups and vaccinations.

Employers are responsible for renewing and updating health insurance policies as needed to ensure continuous coverage for their employees.

Navigating Dubai’s Work Visa and Permit Process: A Guide to Working Visas

Table of Contents

One crucial aspect of working in the UAE is that the company is responsible for providing a work visa or work pass. You cannot independently apply for these permits or cards as an employee. If you’re interested in finding employment in the emirate, you can begin by referring to our comprehensive guide on securing a job in Dubai. Additionally, you can explore various websites and mobile applications that feature job listings. We have compiled a list of the top job sites in the UAE to assist you in your search.

Once you have identified the perfect opportunity, it’s time to proceed to the next stage. In Dubai, the work licenses are issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE). It is your company’s responsibility to apply for this permit, which will later be converted into a legal residency visa.

Once you have obtained the housing visa, the work pass allows you to enter the UAE and commence your job. The entire process typically takes around two months. During this period, your employer will arrange various requirements, such as a physical examination, an Emirates ID, a labor card, and a residency visa.

The primary objective of the residency visa is to demonstrate that the company is sponsoring you and has covered the expenses for your work permit, medical examination, and Emirates ID. Once you have obtained your resident visa, you can sponsor your family’s entry into the country and cover their expenses.

This applies not only to married individuals but also to single mothers. Men can also acquire a work pass in the UAE if their wives take care of the sponsorship process.

Understanding the Dubai Work Visa System

Before you start working in the UAE, getting a UAE work visa is crucial. There are three types to choose from: the standard work visa, the Green Visa, and the Golden Visa. The right visa for you depends on your specific situation and needs.

1. Standard Work Visa

If you want to work in the UAE, a standard work visa is what you’ll need. It’s a visa sponsored by your employer that allows you to live and work in the UAE as an employee for two to three years. After that, your employer can renew or cancel the visa.

The standard work visa is a popular choice for job seekers and employers in the UAE. To obtain this visa, you’ll need a written job offer and approval from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE).Before coming to the UAE on a standard work visa, you must accept the job offer in writing and obtain an entry permit. This permit allows you to enter the UAE and begin finalizing your work and residence visas .

2. Green Visa

The UAE introduced the Green visa in October 2022 to attract and support foreign freelancers and self-employed individuals. It grants holders residency for five years and does not require employer sponsorship.

The Green visa has many benefits, including:

  • The ability to sponsor immediate relatives to relocate to the UAE
  • A six-month grace period upon visa expiry or cancellation
  • A simplified application process

The documents required to apply for a Green visa vary depending on the applicant’s work category. However, standard required documents include:

  • A valid employment contract or self-employment permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE).
  • Proof of education.
  • Proof of sufficient income during the applicant’s stay in the UAE.

3. Golden Visa

The UAE’s Golden visa is a long-term residence permit that allows highly skilled professionals to live, work, and study in the UAE for ten years without needing a local sponsor. This type of visa is typically granted to doctors, scientists, athletes, inventors, artists, healthcare workers, and others with exceptional qualifications.

Golden visa holders enjoy several benefits, including:

  • Access to exclusive health insurance packages
  • The ability to sponsor unlimited immediate family members and support staff
  • The ability to spend a total amount of time outside the UAE without affecting the validity of their visa

The supporting documents required for a Golden visa application vary depending on the applicant’s background. An eligibility quiz on the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) website can help determine if you qualify for the Golden visa.

Who is Eligible for a UAE Work Visa?

To legally work as an expat in the UAE, you must be over 18 years old, and your employer must meet the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization’s (MoHRE’s) standards. Here is a simplified overview of the MoHRE’s conditions for working in the UAE:

  • Your employer must have a valid operating license.
  • Your employer must have no violations of the law.
  • Your job must correspond to the nature of your employer’s business.
  • You must have at least a high school diploma.

There is no maximum age limit for working in the UAE, but employers must pay an additional fee of AED 5,000 (US$1,360) every two years for employing workers over 65.

What You Need to Obtain 10 Key Steps to Get Your UAE Work Visa a UAE Employment Visa?

To apply for a UAE work visa, you must provide certain documents depending on the specific visa category. Here is a general list of the supporting documents required for a UAE employment visa application:

  • Provide your original passport and a copy of it.
  • Submit passport-sized photos that meet the UAE’s requirements.
  • Obtain an Emirates ID card.
  • Secure an entry permit from the Ministry of Labor (MoL).
  • Obtain a medical certificate from a government-approved health center in the UAE.
  • Provide copies of your academic qualifications, which must be authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UAE Embassy in your home country.
  • Submit necessary documents from your employer, such as their commercial license and company card.

It’s important to note that the employer is responsible for the work visa application process and associated costs. At the same time, the employee is responsible for submitting the required documents for the residence permit.

10 Key Steps to Get Your UAE Work Visa

When applying for a UAE work visa, you can break down the process into three stages: obtaining an employment entry visa, using an Emirates ID, and acquiring a residence visa and work visa. Let’s go through each stage and its steps:

1st Step: Applying for an Employment Entry Visa in the UAE

1. apply for entry visa quota approval.

If you live and work in one of the UAE’s 46 free zones, your employer will need to apply for a UAE free zone visa, which requires the approval of visa quotas from the Ministry of Labor.

Employers in free zones have limitations on the number of work visas they can obtain, and these quotas differ among the various free zones. For instance, the quota is set in Dubai at one visa per nine square meters of office space. If an employer reaches their quota, they have the option to either move to a larger office space or apply for a quota upgrade.

It’s essential for employers in free zones to closely monitor their visa quotas and make necessary adjustments to accommodate their workforce. This ensures compliance with regulations and enables the smooth processing of work visas for employees.

2. Submit a Signed Contract of Employment

After obtaining quota approval, the employer must submit a work contract to the Ministry of Labor (MoL) for approval. The contract must be signed and available in three languages: English, Arabic, and the employee’s native language if it is different from either of the two languages mentioned.

The employer must ensure that the work contract meets the language requirements and is duly signed. This provides clarity and transparency between the employer and the employee and ensures compliance with the regulations set by the MoL.

3. File an Application for an Employment Entry Visa

The employer needs to submit the work visa application for approval. During this stage, the Ministry of Labor (MoL) verifies that the sponsor is a registered corporate entity in the UAE. They also assess if any unemployed UAE citizens are suitable for the job and could fill the position instead of the foreign applicant. The MoL must give their approval for the work visa application before issuing an entry visa.

The employer needs to go through this process to ensure that hiring foreign applicants is justified and complies with the regulations set by the MoL.

4. Get Your Employment Entry Visa

Once the work visa application is approved, the Ministry of Labor (MoL) issues an employment entry visa, commonly known as a pink visa. This entry visa has two months validity for standard and Green visa holders and six months with multiple entries for Golden visa holders. Its purpose is to allow the employee to legally enter the UAE and proceed with the formalities of obtaining a residence visa.

Upon arrival in the UAE, the employee will receive the entry visa. In case they are unable to travel within the initial 60-day period, they have the option to apply for a one-time extension. If the employee is already in the UAE on a different visa, they must apply for a visa ‘change of status’ or make a ‘border run’ to obtain the entry visa upon arrival.

Once in the UAE, the employee should gather the necessary supporting documents for their residence visa application, such as an Emirates ID and a health certificate. Simultaneously, the employer must submit additional documents to complete the process and finalize the work visa.

2nd Step: Apply for an Emirates ID

5. request the issuance of an emirates id.

As an expat working in the UAE, it is essential to obtain an Emirates ID, which is a vital document for medical screening and serves as your everyday identification within the country. Instead of always carrying your passport, you can use the Emirates ID as your identification document.

To apply for an Emirates ID, visit an Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) center. Make sure to bring your passport and entry visa with you. At the center, you must provide your biometrics, including fingerprints and a photograph, to complete the application process.

3rd Step: Get Your UAE Work Visa and Residence Visa

6. undergo a medical examination.

Every applicant must undergo a medical screening at an approved clinic in the UAE. The results of this checkup are necessary for applying for the residence visa. All applicants must complete a medical screening to proceed with the residence visa application. This involves visiting a clinic that the government has approved.

7. Provide an Employment Agreement

To formalize the UAE work visa, employers must upload their employee’s labor contract onto the Ministry of Labor (MoL) website within 14 days of receiving the employee’s medical screening results.

8 . Get Health Insurance

All expat employees in the UAE need to have health insurance, as it is a mandatory requirement. In certain Emirates like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it is the responsibility of the employers to provide health insurance coverage for their employees and their families.

However, foreign employees in Sharjah or the northern Emirates must obtain their health insurance plan. The Ministry of Labor (MoL) strictly enforces this rule and does not issue or renew work visas for employees without a valid health insurance card.

9. Secure a Work Visa and Initiate Payroll

Once all the necessary steps have been completed, the Ministry of Labor (MoL) typically takes around five days to issue the official work visa. Once the work visa is received, employees are legally permitted to start working in the UAE, and employers can begin processing payroll through the official UAE system.

10. Get Your Residence Visa

Once all the requirements are fulfilled, the employee must submit the necessary documents and their residence visa application. If the official Emirates ID has not been received yet, an application receipt will be sufficient. The residence visa has a validity of two years and can be renewed.

To reside in the UAE, all expats must obtain a residence visa, including the employee’s work visa. The residence visa is essential for living in the UAE and completing various formalities such as opening bank accounts, registering a car, and obtaining a PO box.

Key Points to Consider Before Getting a Work Visa in the UAE

One crucial factor to consider when applying for a standard work visa in the UAE is that every applicant must have sponsorship from a legally registered entity within the country. This requirement can make the process more complex for foreign companies hiring talent in the UAE.

However, there is an alternative option for companies that have not established a local presence in the UAE but still wish to employ foreign nationals. They can choose to partner with an employer of record (EOR). An EOR is a third-party organization that acts as the legal employer for your global workforce, allowing you to hire talent from outside your home country without the need to establish a local entity.

By partnering with an employer of record (EOR), companies can entrust handling various tasks, including onboarding, payroll, visa requirements, and compliance. This enables companies to enjoy the advantages of global mobility, allowing them to explore the UAE market and hire expats and locals without worrying about noncompliance with UAE employment and immigration laws.

Visiting the UAE? Here are 11 types of entry visas for visitors and tourists

Living in uae.

Visa to explore job or business opportunities in the UAE

Dubai airport August 5 2021

Dubai: If you are planning to come to the UAE to look for a job or to explore business opportunities, you can soon apply for an entry visa specifically for the purpose. In fact, even if you are flying in to visit family and friends, you will no longer require a sponsor or host to issue the visa on your behalf.

11 types of Entry Visas were announced by the UAE government on April 18, 2022 as part of a new ‘Entry and Residence Scheme’. The visa scheme is expected to come into effect from September this year.

Along with removing the need for a host or sponsor for some categories of visit visas, the new scheme will also offer flexible visa durations based on the needs of the visitors and the purpose of the visit.

To understand what the 11 categories are, and eligibility criteria for each, here is all you need to know.

1. Tourist Visa

This visa needs to be sponsored by a tourism company.

2. Multi-entry tourist visa – five years

Apart from the regular tourist visa listed above, you can also apply for a five-year multiple entry tourist visa. These are the features of the five-year multiple entry tourist visa:

• No need for a sponsor. • It allows the person to stay in the country up to 90 continuous days. • It can be extended for a similar period, provided that the entire period of stay does not exceed 180 days in one year. • For this type of visa, the person must have a bank balance of $4,000 (Dh14,692), or its equivalent in foreign currencies, during the last six months prior to submitting the application for the visa.

3. Visa to visit relatives or friends in the UAE

• A visitor can apply for this entry permit if he or she is a relative or friend of a UAE citizen or resident. • No host or sponsor required.

4. Visa for exploring job opportunities

This visa offers easy entry to young talent and skilled workers to explore job opportunities, without requiring a host or sponsor in the UAE. The visa will be granted to:

• Those classified in the first or second or third skill level as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). • Fresh graduates of the best 500 universities in the world.

The minimum educational level of the applicant should be a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.

5. Visa for exploring business opportunities

This visa will grant entry to individuals to explore investment and business opportunities, without requiring a sponsor or host in the UAE.

6. Temporary work mission

The new scheme also announced a specific visa for individuals who are on a temporary work assignment like probation testing or a project. This visa would be sponsored by the employer and requires a temporary work contract or letter from the employer clarifying the purpose of the visit and proof of health fitness to work.

7. Medical treatment

Visitors coming to the UAE seeking medical treatment will need to be sponsored by a medical establishment.

8. Studying or training

The Entry and Residence Scheme also covers visitors coming to the UAE for training and internship purposes. This entry visa is sponsored by educational institutions or public and private entities. The visa application would require a letter from the entity, clarifying the details of the study or training or internship programme and its duration.

9. Diplomatic affairs

This is an entry visa reserved for holders of diplomatic, special and United Nations (UN) passports.

10. GCC Residents

This visa would be available to residents of GCC countries and their family members.

What is visa change status, how much overstaying fine, employment visa delaying reason.

Change status is the process that allows you to change your visit visa to an employment visa in the UAE. You will successfully evade the overstaying fines if you complete the steps to change your status.

Step-by-Step Process of Changing to an Employment Visa

Below is the process of changing a visit visa to an employment visa:

  • 01   First, get the offer letter from the prospective employer
  • 02   Confirm that you have accepted the offer to your employer and sign the offer letter within one day
  • 03   After that, your employer will apply for a quota & labor contract for you to work in the UAE. You and the employer are required to sign the labor contract once it has been approved. This will take 2 to three working days.
  • 04   Next, your employer will apply for your residence entry permit, which will take one day.
  • 05   Change status in one day
  • 06   Get a medical assessment which takes two days and a day for VIPs
  • 07   After that, biometrics will be taken, and your Emirates ID, which will take 2 to 3 working days

If you have found a job, your employer will apply for your residence visa on your behalf and see it through to completion.

You will need to undergo the required medical tests and security checks for your visa to be approved.

Change Visit Visa To Employment Visa In UAE

According to the new visa reforms 2023, you will be fined 50 AED each day if you haven’t changed your visa status before your visit visa expiry.

Individuals who overstay their visas in the UAE will be charged a penalty. You must be aware of the potential fines and learn how to check if you owe any overstay fines. After your UAE visa expires and you exhaust your grace period, you must pay the overstay fine according to the number of days accumulated.

On top of the overstay fine, you will need to obtain a Dubai/UAE out pass, which costs up to AED 300. The out pass is basically an exit permit that allows holders to leave the UAE. This new rule is in accordance with the latest announcement.

When switching from a visit visa to an employment visa in the UAE, it can sometimes take several days. If the company where you got the job offer cites any of the reasons below, you should immediately opt to extend your UAE visit visa.

  • Quota issues: The Labour department assigns a specific number of quotas to each company based on the size of the business, business type, and the professions available. If your employers don't have a specific quota to hire, it may take longer than expected, and they should request the Labour department.
  • National Holidays: the UAE has few national holidays compared to other countries. If your employment visa application falls on a national holiday such as the Eid holidays or any other major holiday, you may lose days as government offices will be closed.
  • Ramadan: visa processing during Ramadan is usually slow and can take even four working days to get approved or rejected. Working hours during Ramadan are reduced in both the public and private sectors. System issues may also cause delays during this time. Ordinarily, a visit visa takes no more than two working days to be issued.
  • Incomplete PRO or Typing Center: at times, your employer PRO or the typing center handling your employment visa is unable to move things along quickly. As a result, most visitors end up incurring lots of fines. If you sense this issue, you might want to consider extending your visa.
