13 Travel Predictions for 2023

July 18, 2023

Will airfare rise or fall in 2023? Will any US airlines go bankrupt? In early 2023, Going Co-Founder and Chief Flight Expert Scott Keyes made some predictions on this, and more, for travel in 2023. Here's his original list, updated with the results at the end of the year and how he did.

I went 12 for 17 on my inaugural 2022 predictions . Some may call that a gentleman’s C, but predictions are hard, especially about the future, and none were gimmes. I feel good!

Here are my predictions for travel in 2023, along with my level of confidence and a brief rationale. We’ll follow up in 12 months to see how I did.

The predictions

1. Airfare will fall at least 5% compared to 2022. (70% confidence)

Average fares are currently 36% higher than they were 12 months ago. (Adjusting for inflation, airfare is up 24%.) In 2023, I expect that to reverse and year-over-year fares to fall.

2. Flights to Asia will get cheaper. (90% confidence)

With China—the last major country with covid travel restrictions—poised to reopen on January 8, I’m anticipating a huge uptick in transpacific flights (which are currently down 50% compared to 2019). More competition = cheaper fares. The average cheap flight to Asia soared to $775 in 2022; it’ll fall this year.

3. More Mistake Fares in 2023 than 2022. (60% confidence)

In 2022, we found 7 Mistake Fares for members. These included Iceland for $100 roundtrip, London/Amsterdam for $174 roundtrip, and Tokyo for $316 roundtrip. I’m predicting at least 8 this year.

4. More cheap flights to Tokyo. (80% confidence)

We found just 82 cheap flights to Tokyo in 2022. But with Japan now fully reopened for American travelers and transpacific flight volume poised to rebound, I’m expecting far more cheap Tokyo fares this year.

5. Flights will be less full in 2023 than 2022. (70% confidence)

Flights were more full throughout much of 2022 than they were pre-pandemic. I think we’ll see a reversion to the mean—with pent-up demand dissipating and flight volume increasing—and more empty seats as a result.

6. Flight volume will stay below 2019 levels. (80% confidence)

In 2019, US airlines averaged more than 26,000 flights per day, compared to just 22,300 in 2022. That 14% gap will shrink significantly, but we won’t reach 2019 levels this year.

7. Seat volume will exceed 2019 levels. (60% confidence)

In the past decade, the airline industry has shifted away from regional planes and towards larger jets, and that’s been accelerated by the ongoing pilot shortage. In 2022, the number of daily seats was down 7% (2.93 million vs. 3.16 million in 2019); I’m optimistic that we’ll top pre-pandemic levels this year.

8. The federal government will move to block the Spirit/JetBlue merger. (60% confidence)

Competition between airlines is the single biggest factor that drives cheap flights, and JetBlue’s proposed purchase of Spirit would result in one fewer competitor. I predict that federal regulators will try to block the merger because of its adverse impact on airfares and choice for travelers.

9. No bankruptcy among major US airlines. (90% confidence)

Though two major airlines worldwide declared bankruptcy (SAS and Garuda Indonesia) in 2022, US airlines had a quite profitable year. I think the good times continue and we don’t see any of the major US airlines (American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, or Frontier) enter bankruptcy in 2023.

10. At least 3 more countries will announce plans to lift airport liquid restrictions. (70% confidence)

The United Kingdom has announced that by June 2024, air travelers will once again be allowed to bring liquids through security. I predict at least 3 more countries this year will join the UK in announcing plans to permit liquids at airports.

11. The Department of Transportation proposes its final rule on flight refunds. (60% confidence)

This past summer, the DOT proposed a landmark regulation that would strengthen travelers’ rights to a refund in case of long delays or pandemic restrictions. (Short overview here .) While the federal regulatory process rarely sets speed records, I’m hopeful the DOT will propose a final rule similar to the initial proposal this calendar year.

12. One of the big 6 US airlines will buy out a smaller carrier. (60% confidence)

Sticking my neck out here, but I think there’s a decent chance one of the six largest US airlines (American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, or Southwest) will try to purchase a smaller carrier. (Not counting the proposed JetBlue-Spirit merger, of course.) Alaska buying Hawaiian? Frontier and Allegiant combining? As a cheap flight lover I hope we don’t see any more mergers, but hey it’s fun to speculate!

13. There will be fewer flight cancellations than 2022. (70% confidence)

Of the 5.27 million flights through September 30, 2022 (when the most recent official data is available), 147,533 were canceled, a rate of 2.8%. Both the rate and overall number will decrease during the first 9 months of 2023.

The results

Now the results are in: 10 of 13 correct, with a final grade of 77%. (I went 12 for 17 in my 2022 predictions .) My parents may be disappointed—”why not 13 of 13 correct?”—but I’ll accept any back pats you’re willing to give.

None of the predictions were gimmes, but the one I was most proud of was nailing Alaska’s move to acquire Hawaiian . My prize is cursing myself for not putting any money behind it.

I gave each prediction a confidence level; here’s how those scored:

  • 60% confidence: 4 right, 1 wrong (80%)
  • 70% confidence: 2 right, 2 wrong (50%)
  • 80% confidence: 2 right, 0 wrong (100%)
  • 90% confidence: 2 right, 0 wrong (100%)

1. Airfare will fall at least 5% compared to 2022. (70% confidence)

Airfare is currently 12% lower than it was a year ago and 24% lower than its May 2022 peak.

2. Flights to Asia will get cheaper. (90% confidence)

Flight prices to Asia fell 1.5%, enough for this prediction to be technically correct but not enough for me to feel good about.

3. More mistake fares in 2023 than in 2022. (60% confidence)

In 2022, we found 7 mistake fares for Going members. This year we found 8, including NYC to Paris on American for $230 nonstop roundtrip and San Francisco to Lima for $161 roundtrip on Delta.

4. More cheap flights to Tokyo. (80% confidence)

We found 193 cheap flights to Tokyo in 2023—a major jump from the 82 in 2022—including LAX-Tokyo for $426 nonstop roundtrip a couple of months ago.

5. Flights will be less full in 2023 than in 2022. (70% confidence)

Flights in 2022 were 80.5% full; to my surprise, flights in 2023 were 83.5% full.

6. Flight volume will stay below 2019 levels. (80% confidence)

In 2023, US airports saw 23,431 average daily departures, 10% lower than what we saw in 2019.

7. Seat volume will exceed 2019 levels. (60% confidence)

Approximately 3.22 million seats were flown in the US each day this year, 2% higher than what we saw in 2019 (and 10% more than in 2022).

8. The federal government will move to block the Spirit/JetBlue merger. (60% confidence)

The Justice Department sued in March to stop the merger; a judge’s ruling on the matter is expected soon.

9. No bankruptcy among major US airlines. (90% confidence)

No bankruptcies; it was another boom year for US carriers.

10. At least 3 more countries will announce plans to lift airport liquid restrictions. (70% confidence)

Frustratingly, this prediction didn’t come anywhere near happening.

11. The Department of Transportation proposes its final rule on flight refunds. (60% confidence)

The proposed DOT rule to strengthen travelers’ rights to a refund in case of long delays has yet to be finalized.

12. One of the big 6 US airlines will buy out a smaller carrier. (60% confidence)

When I offhandedly speculated about “Alaska buying Hawaiian,” what I should have been doing was playing Powerball.

13. There will be fewer flight cancellations than in 2022. (70% confidence)

Verdict:   ✅

Comparing the first nine months of each year (when the most recent official data is available), 2.8% of flights were canceled in 2022 compared to just 1.6% of flights in 2023.

Curious about what the next year will bring? I’ve got you. Next week, I’ll share my predictions for travel in 2024.

Travel trends for 2023

travel predictions for 2023

Excited to get your 2023 travel plans going? Same. We’ve crunched the numbers on what we think will be the top trends in travel for next year – because what’s the point of having all this travel data if we don’t share it? From the most affordable destinations to those places we think will be “in,” these are the travel trends you need to know for the year ahead.

Trending destinations.

When it came to 2022 trips, travelers were more than ready – destinations around the country and the world saw tourism coming back. The emergence of “revenge travel” was also too real and there are no signs of it stopping in 2023. So where is everyone headed this year? We’ve got a few educated guesses.

travel predictions for 2023

Region of the year: Asia and South Pacific.

Snapshots in London, Paris and the Amalfi Coast flooded our feeds in 2022 as US travelers were returning to travel. In 2023, we expect to see travelers branch out to destinations in Asia and the South Pacific. Based on our data, here are the places that we anticipate will generate buzz:

Top 10 trending destinations for 2023

  • Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam : Searches were up 769% year over year
  • Taipei City, Taiwan : Searches were up 289% year over year
  • Auckland, New Zealand : Searches were up 272% year over year
  • Singapore : Searches were up 201% year over year
  • Hong Kong : Searches were up 190% year over year
  • Melbourne, Australia : Searches were up 167% year over year
  • Bangkok, Thailand : Searches were up 166% year over year
  • Tokyo, Japan : Searches were up 150% year over year
  • Sydney, Australia : Searches were up 145% year over year
  • Tel Aviv, Israel : Searches were up 134% year over year

Our takeaways: Travelers will be flocking to bucket list destinations in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand in 2023, likely because these destinations have (finally) re-opened to visitors. Already have your eyes on flights? We’ve got new data on when to book – keep scrolling for the details.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023. To find year over year percent change, the same search dates in 2021 and travel dates in 2022 were considered. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Which places are cheaper? You’re getting warmer…

Skipped out in 2022 because of audacious flight prices? We hear you – fares this past year were out of control (which might bleed into 2023 too… but more on that later). That’s why we took a look at our numbers to see which destinations are seeing the biggest dips in flight prices:

Destinations trending cheaper vs. last year

  • Melbourne, Australia : 10% YoY price decrease in airfare
  • Bora Bora : 9% YoY price decrease in airfare
  • Copenhagen, Denmark : 8% YoY price decrease in airfare
  • Sydney, Australia : 2% YoY price decrease in airfare
  • Fiji : 2% YoY price decrease in airfare

Destinations trending cheaper vs. 3 years ago

  • Warsaw, Poland : 10% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare
  • Bora Bora : 8% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare
  • Mykonos, Greece : 7% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare
  • Lisbon, Portugal : 4% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare
  • Bogotá, Colombia : 2% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare

Our takeaways: You might have noticed that Melbourne and Sydney are also on the top-trending destinations list. While flights there are generally expensive, 2023 will see lower-than-usual prices… so this could be your time to plan a trip “down unda.” Additionally, if you’ve had your eyes on Bora Bora, our numbers show flights there are less pricey than they’ve been in years.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023. To find year over year percent change in airfare, the same search dates in 2021 and travel dates in 2022 were considered. To find year over 3 year percent change in airfare, the same search dates in 2019 and travel dates in 2020 were considered. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Staying within a budget? Here’s where to go.

For flights that don’t drain your bank account, we’d recommend a city adventure that’s closer to home. Based on our data, airfare to these popular destinations in and around the US are where you can see more… for less:

Destinations around North America seeing the lowest fares on average

  • New York, NY, US : $337
  • Chicago, IL, US : $343
  • Austin, TX, US : $360
  • Atlanta, GA, US : $363
  • Houston, TX, US : $365
  • Nashville, TN, US : $365
  • Guadalajara, Mexico : $369
  • Toronto, Canada : $375
  • Raleigh, NC, US : $375
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL, US : $376

Want to make use of your recently-renewed passport without paying a hefty price? It’s possible – based on our data, here are some places to consider for international travel on a budget in 2023:

Destinations outside of North America seeing the lowest fares on average

  • Bogotá, Colombia : $534
  • Medellín, Colombia : $542
  • Guayaquil, Ecuador : $642
  • Lima, Peru : $691
  • Lisbon, Portugal : $708
  • Quito, Ecuador : $712
  • Reykjavik, Iceland : $718
  • Warsaw, Poland : $747
  • Copenhagen, Denmark : $749
  • Krakow, Poland : $766

Our takeaways: For those staying closer to home in 2023, we recommend pursuing popular cities in the US, Canada and Mexico. For international excursions, consider flying to destinations in South America and Northern Europe to stay under $800.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023 with the lowest average airfare. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Flight trends.

The searches continue..

Inflation made its mark (or… dent) in 2022 – and many of us have felt that effect on our budgets. But travelers have continued to search for flights… even if it means shelling out more money than usual. Based on our numbers, here are 3 things we noticed about search behavior and what these trends could mean for 2023:

  • Interest in travel isn’t going anywhere. It’s clear travelers aren’t willing to sacrifice their long-awaited vacations. Both domestic and international flight searches are up for 2023 compared to 2022 (25% for domestic and 64% for international).*
  • Solo travel is on the rise. Travelers are ready to find themselves (and their new favorite destinations). Searches for single-person flights are up 36% for travel in 2023 compared to 2022.**
  • Wanted: more legroom. Travelers are looking to upgrade. Though all flight classes are seeing an increase in search interest, one class got more attention: premium economy. Searches for these seats are up 64% for travel in 2023 compared to 2022.***

Our takeaways: Flight searches in 2022 for travel in 2023 were up 46% versus searches in 2021 for travel in 2022 – which could be telling for travel demand in 2023. Travelers continue to plan trips both domestically and abroad, with no signs of stopping.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023. To find year over year percent change, the same search dates in 2021 and travel dates in 2022 were considered.

**KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for one traveler for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023.

***KAYAK US considered round-trip flights for different airfare classes for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023.

Airfare prices are reaching for the sky.

travel predictions for 2023

We won’t sugarcoat it – the increase that we saw in 2022 for flights will likely carry over into 2023. Does that mean we’re going to stop traveling? Absolutely not – especially since we have the data to help ease the burden of heftier prices. Based on our numbers, here’s what you can expect for trends in flight prices:

  • Higher demand = higher prices. With more search interest comes bigger price tags. Both domestic and international flight prices are up in 2023 compared to 2022 (52% for domestic and 29% for international).*
  • These are the regions with the lowest increases. Flights from the US to destinations around the world will see an increase in price for 2023 trips. That being said, flights to the South Pacific (+3%) and Europe (+10%) will see the smallest price increases.*
  • Fly out mid-winter. Both domestic and international trips are expected to see price increases through June, so you may save if you take trips earlier in the year. This is especially true for trips abroad – prices for international flights departing in February dip 8%, making this month a great time to travel.*

Our takeaways: Searches show that the demand for travel is there – and even though flight prices continue to soar (up 52% for domestic and 29% for international), this doesn’t seem to be stopping US travelers from getting away.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023.

The best days to book for a better price.

travel predictions for 2023

There’s never a straight answer to the age-old question: when is the best time to book flights for the best possible deal? That’s because the data is always changing. As far as when to book in 2023, we have multiple answers. Based on our numbers, here’s what to expect:

  • Leave on these days of the week. Yet another reason to love Thursdays and Fridays: because they may offer cheaper prices on airfare*. Our historical data shows that the lowest flight prices can be found if you book your departing flights on one of these days.
  • This is when people are traveling. Travelers really take advantage of that extended holiday time off – our historical data shows that December is when travelers take the longest trips. This data also shows that the largest number of trips are taken during June and July*.
  • Trips are being booked in advance. Both domestic and international flight booking windows increased compared to 2021 (9% for domestic and 7% for international). Domestic flights were booked 42 – 46 days in advance and international flights were booked 62 – 66 days in advance, respectively.*

Our takeaways: Opt for flights that leave on Thursday or Friday for a better deal and avoid booking trips during the busier months of June and July if you can help it. Booking your flights in advance also would be wise. In fact, here’s when to book your flights based on your destination:

travel predictions for 2023

*KAYAK US historical data was considered for flight search dates 1.1.2022-11.20.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2022-12.31.2022.

Hotel trends.

Lots of up and down..

Flights may have their inflation moment next year, but that doesn’t mean that hotels are following suit – it all depends on where you’re going. More travelers are searching for international hotels, meaning that domestic travelers are likely visiting more destinations where they already have a place to stay. Wondering what that means for nightly rates? Based on our numbers, here’s what to expect when finding a place to stay in 2023:

  • Opposites attract. The data for domestic vs. international stays are pretty opposite. While searches for domestic hotels decreased 5% YoY and nightly rates increased 8% YoY, searches for international hotels increased 4% YoY and nightly rates decreased 6% YoY.*
  • Staying local? Head west. Looking at the locations with more affordable options, the West dominates with generally lower nightly rates. If you’re looking to stay in and around the US for less, you may find the best hotel prices in Northwest and Southwest locations.*
  • International places with good prices. Going along with the theme of trending destinations, the international locations where you’ll find stays with reasonable rates are in Asia, the South Pacific and Europe. Many of these international rates rival those located in the States.*

Our takeaways: Travelers are searching less for domestic stays and more for hotels abroad. Domestic nightly rates have increased slightly – making them around the same price point as international nightly rates, which have decreased slightly.

*KAYAK US considered standard, double occupancy hotel searches between 7.1.2022 and 11.20.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2023-12.31.2023.

Where to stay for less.

No matter where you’re looking to stay, nightly prices for hotels and rentals aren’t seeing huge increases in rates. For both domestic and international stays, travelers could expect to pay under $220 a night depending on where they’re headed. Based on our numbers, here are destinations with affordable accommodations:

Destinations around North America with the lowest rates*

  • Ocean Shores, WA, US : $153/night
  • Portland, OR, US : $161/night
  • Cody, WY, US : $169/night
  • Mexico City, Mexico : $190/night
  • Reno, NV, US : $190/night
  • Salt Lake City, UT, US : $192/night
  • Toronto, Canada : $202/night
  • Houston, TX, US : $205/night
  • San Antonio, TX, US : $212/night
  • Denver, CO, US : $214/night

Destinations outside North America with the lowest rates*

  • Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam : $105/night
  • Bangkok, Thailand : $124/night
  • Berlin, Germany : $143/night
  • Lisbon, Portugal : $153/night
  • Seoul, South Korea : $162/night
  • Madrid, Spain : $172/night
  • Istanbul, Turkey : $176/night
  • Athens, Greece : $176/night
  • Auckland, New Zealand : $180/night
  • Cartagena, Colombia : $182/night

Our takeaways: The majority of destinations around North America with affordable nightly rates are what we’d consider “outdoorsy” – great for the traveler looking to get outside. International destinations with affordable hotels overlap with regions that may see the lowest increase in airfare prices, which could mean spending less overall to visit a bucket list destination, despite the general rising cost of airfare.

*KAYAK US considered standard, double occupancy hotel searches between 7.1.2022 and 11.20.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2023-12.31.2023. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Rental car trends.

travel predictions for 2023

The demand for rental cars is going down.

When it comes to search interest and prices, rental cars are in a league of their own. This past year was still a little chaotic for those looking for a ride – especially with residual demand and lack of inventory left over from 2021. With many of these issues in the rearview (we hope), we expect to see rental car searches and rates start to level out. Based on our numbers, here’s what you can expect to see for rental cars over the next year:

  • There’s more interest abroad. Domestic rental car searches are down 21% YoY, whereas international searches are up 41% YoY.*
  • Drivers know what they want. What do they want? Some want luxury – searches for luxury car rentals are up 25% YoY. Others want something more sustainable – searches for electric car rentals increased 136% YoY.*
  • This car won the popularity contest. By “this car” we mean this particular type, which was the most popular class of car among renters in 2022. Compact cars took the top spot in 2022, which could spell out more interest in these types of rentals in 2023.*

Our takeaways: There is less demand for rental cars in 2023 (-3%) compared to 2022. For those who are seeking rented rides, specific classes of cars are all the rage, including EVs – which could continue into the next year, since prices at the pump are still higher than usual.

*KAYAK US considered rental car searches between 7.1.2022 and 11.30.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2023-12.31.2023. For YoY comparison of car categories, the same search dates in 2021 and the same travel dates in 2022 were used.

Rental prices are matching search energy.

Search interest isn’t the only thing that’s going down – rental prices also saw decreases over the past year. Though average daily rates for domestic car rentals are down 7% YoY, average daily rates for international rental car have risen 12% YoY, matching the increased search interest for international rental cars (up 41% YoY). Based on our numbers, here are destinations where drivers can expect lower average daily rental rates:

Destinations around North America with rental deals*

  • Cancun, Mexico: $37/day
  • Aruba: $58/day
  • Miami, FL, US: $59/day
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL, US: $63/day
  • Los Angeles, CA, US: $64/day
  • San Jose, CA, US: $66/day
  • San Diego, CA, US: $67/day
  • Tampa, FL, US: $68/day
  • Boston, MA, US: $68/day
  • Santa Ana, CA, US: $69/day

Destinations outside North America with rental deals*

  • Bangkok, Thailand: $37/day
  • Málaga, Spain: $43/day
  • San José, Costa Rica: $45/day
  • Cape Town, South Africa: $49/day
  • Liberia, Costa Rica: $51/day
  • Athens, Greece: $53/day
  • Madrid, Spain: $57/day
  • Frankfurt, Germany: $59/day
  • Lisbon, Portugal: $59/day
  • Auckland, New Zealand: $59/day

Our takeaways: Rental rates as a whole are dropping it low(er), with a total 5% YoY decrease in daily rates compared to those in 2022. For the best deals in and around the US, travelers will find the cheapest rentals located in California and Florida. For international car rentals, travelers can expect to pay less than $60 a day at the most affordable destinations.

*KAYAK US considered rental car searches between 7.1.2022 and 11.30.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2023-12.31.2023. For year over year percent change, the same search dates in 2021 and travel dates in 2022 were used. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

That was… a lot of information, even for  data geeks like us. If there’s one thing we took away from all these insights, it’s that rising costs won’t keep travelers from seeing the world. There has also been a shift from rental homes back to hotel accommodations to avoid clean-up costs and the stress of having to deal with certain hosts, which will definitely play into how people travel in 2023.

Elite Daily tapped 10 travel experts from Lonely Planet, National Geographic, American Express Travel, EF Ultimate Break, and more to share their their travel predictions for 2023, and here is everything you should consider before booking your first plane ticket for the new year.

A woman at a freestanding hotel accommodations, which is one of the 2023 travel trends and predictio...

While you can’t pass up a one-of-a-kind stay on Airbnb, the President and CEO of Refined Hospitality , Ron Gorodesky, believes that hotel accommodations will take over in 2023. Gorodesky says, “[T]ravelers are looking for freestanding home alternatives with all the service of a traditional hotel.” Instead of having to do dishes or throw your towels in the wash on your final day to avoid additional fees, you can just stay in a hotel that feels like a unique rental stay.

One of these options is Refined’s River House at Odette’s in Pennsylvania. You could also find a hotel that’s all-inclusive, so you not only avoid extra fees but also receive tons of amenities as well.

Stephen Arthur, the Director of Leisure Sales at Timbers Resorts , shared that “due to increasing remote work,” Timbers is seeing more guests choosing to go on trips with an extended stay. Instead of just taking the weekend to visit, you can spend an entire week or even longer in your dream destination, exploring when you’re off the clock.

Another trend that Arthur says will be big in 2023 is multi-generational traveling. While you may want to go places with your partner or bestie, “family travel is expected to rise by nearly 25% annually.” You want to share these once-in-a-lifetime trips with the people you love the most, so it makes sense to go old school with a family vacay.

Choquequirao is one of the 2023 travel trends and predictions, according to experts.

It seems the adrenaline rush isn’t over in 2023. Similar to how high adrenaline excursions and outdoor adventures were a travel trend in 2022, National Geographic ’s Senior Editor, Amy Alipio, also sees 2023 as a big year for adventure. Some recommendations include off-the-beaten-path spots like Choquequirao in Peru, going bungee jumping in New Zealand, or hiking in Austria. If you rather stay close to home, Utah has hiking, camping, and river rafting.

Alipio also sees community as a big trend that focuses on conservation and sustainable tourism. This means that, along with taking away memories, you’re also giving something back to the community you’re visiting. That could mean getting to know the culture or contributing to the economy in positive ways. Alipio suggests visiting the Dodecanese Islands in Greece, checking out some breweries in Milwaukee , or taking a train through Laos .

If you enjoy the outdoors but aren’t looking for an adrenaline rush, Alipio also says that visiting to see natural wonders is a travel trend next year. While bioluminescence was huge in 2022, you’ll want to “marvel at the biodiversity of Botswana ” in 2023. Foodies may want to check out the gastrotourism in Slovenia that takes you to different farms and cheesemakers as you bike around. There are also plenty of national parks and natural wonders like the Northern Lights that should be on every traveler’s to-do list.

On the top of American Express Travel’s list of places to visit is Mexico City . While you can make your trip your own, they shared an itinerary that packs every minute of your trip with something memorable to do, like strolling through San Angel's Saturday Bazaar and visiting art galleries. While in Mexico, Nat Geo also suggests visiting the Revillagigedo National Park for both checking off the nature sights and sustainable tourism from your list.

Sure, vacations are about experiences and making new memories, but they’re also for relaxation. American Express Travel reports that 89% of their respondents are looking to escape their day-to-day routine while “74% plan to travel more in 2023 for their wellbeing.” Lonely Planet suggests beachy locations like Halkidiki in Greece or Jamaica as options while American Express travel has stress-free itineraries planned to the Florida Keys and Fiji . Even an all-inclusive stay at a resort is a great way to relax, just as long as it’s not at a White Lotus Resort.

While a traditional trip is always welcome, Hotels.com also shares that 60% of Millennials are hoping to take “alternative wellness getaways” in 2023. Get creative with non-traditional activities like forest bathing or staying in a Whitepod in Switzerland .

American Express Travel also reports that 74% of their respondents are planning to spend more next year on their travel plans. They may even sacrifice their budget for upgrades and amenities like late checkout. Since 70% of people also want to go on new adventures and check off their bucket list, this may be your sign to finally go on that one expensive trip to your dream destination.

Michelle McNeice, the Vice President of Marketing at EF Ultimate Break , shared with Elite Daily that many Gen Zers are planning to go all out: “Call it ‘revenge travel’ or ‘the semester abroad that COVID cancelled,’ Gen Z is embracing adventure and taking on their bucket lists with extended trips across multiple cities.”

You could go on an Emily in Paris- inspired trip to Paris or immerse yourself in everything that Portugal has to offer . Now that their borders are open to tourists, take that wanderlust trip to Japan or go on a month-long European Summer that gives you “more experiences, more core memories.”

Umbria, Italy has some of the best food to eat as part of the 2023 travel trends and predictions, ac...

Foodies will be excited to know that Lonely Planet has also released their list of the best places to eat in 2023. Of course, Italy — more specifically Umbria, Italy — tops the list. Sip on some wine while snacking on Italian truffles, prosciutto, and fine cheeses. Lima, Peru is also a must for anyone with an appetite. They have everything from ceviche to Peruvian doughnuts, Picarones. Other foodie spots include Fukuoka in Japan, South Africa, and Montevideo, Uruguay.

As mentioned, Japan is way easier to travel to now as a tourist. McNeice also shared that all of Asia is going to be a big travel destination in 2023. “Travel is all the way back, and Gen Z and Millennial travelers have made it clear that they’re focused on one destination — Asia. From Bali to Japan to Thailand, interest in adventures across the Asian continent is ever increasing,” McNeice says.

To account for the interest, EF Ultimate Break is launching new destinations that were voted for by customers and include South Korea and Vietnam. This may be an ARMY’s chance to visit the home of BTS and K-Pop, while foodies will love eating pho in Vietnam. As McNeice says, “Simply put, Asia is having a moment.”

“Traveling solo continues to gain popularity within the Gen Z and Millennial demos,” McNeice revealed. “They’re over the idea of coordinating with friends when they can skip the hassle and fly off on an adventure themselves.” Of course, if you’re not ready to do everything by yourself, booking a group getaway with EF Ultimate Break is a great option. You’ll still be choosing your own adventure and charting your own path to where you want to go, but you’ll feel safe and be able to “connect with other travelers” along the way.

If you are planning to travel alone in 2023, be sure to check out our solo travelers issue for tips on where to go and what to pack.

Visiting filming locations like the ones in 'Emily in Paris' will be a 2023 travel trend, according ...

Have you always wanted to visit Sex and the City filming locations in NYC or stay in the hotel from your new fave show, The White Lotus ? With Season 3 of Emily in Paris about to drop on Netflix, you may even want to follow in her footsteps by visiting France.

Expedia reports that 40% of their travelers find inspiration forwhere to go next from TV shows and movies. As such, set-jetting or visiting IRL filming locations is expected to be big in 2023. Apps like SetJetters make it easy to find locations from what you’re currently marathon-watching, so you can add it to your travel to-do list.

While trends like cottagecore have inspired people to travel to cabins and national parks in the past, Expedia believes that cities will make a comeback in 2023. Not just any cities, though. The travel site expects to see culture-rich cities with a lot of art and festivities like NYC, Edinburgh, Lisbon, and Dublin to be extra popular.

“Rustic getaways are on the rise,” according to Vrbo. If cities still aren’t your thing, you may want to consider a cowboy-cation. You could listen to “Cowboy Like Me” by Taylor Swift as you go horseback riding in Montana. Choosing to vacation in a western state rather than traveling all the way to Europe can also be great for your budget, and Vrbo shares that 42% of their travelers find inspiration in outdoorsy locations.

A couple enjoying hotel breakfast, a way to save money, is one of the 2023 travel trends and predict...

Although splurging on your dream trip will be a thing in 2023, experts at Hotels.com and Vrbo believe travelers will still take advantage of creative ways to save money. In fact, Hotels.com shared that three-star hotels have increased in popularity recently. These value hotels still include amenities like free parking and breakfast, so you’re not sacrificing quality or comfort.

At the same time, Vrbo also shared that 43% of travelers plan to cook on vacation to save some money as well. That’s why they’re seeing “foodie-menities” — aka food amenities — as a 2023 travel trend.

Vrbo also sees the rise of hidden gems in 2023. Everyone has the Eiffel Tower or the Grand Canyon on their travel bucket list, but something they don’t have are hidden gem cafes in Los Angeles or off-the-beaten-path restaurants in Europe . The vacation rental site shared that interest in “unconventional destinations has increased by 30%.” That includes cities like Nampa, Idaho and Spokane, Washington.

If other 2023 travel trends have piqued your interest, like solo traveling and splurge vacations, but you’re not sure where to go, the experts at Airbnb offer up the top trending travel spots for 2023 — and they’re all international. Three of the biggest destinations include Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil, with Málaga, Spain taking the No. 1 spot.

You could definitely tour around Australia for a trendy extended vacay, while stopping in cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Other options include a set-jetting trip to The Rings of Power filming locations in New Zealand or unwinding on a mental health vacay in Brazil.

travel predictions for 2023

Travel Predictions 2023

Travelers are set to make 2023 a big year for getting out and exploring the world. Excited about the year ahead, Booking.com has conducted extensive research to reveal the travel trends of 2023, including where travelers want to go, their inspirations for traveling, and how budget plays a big role in their plans.

2023 will be the year of reimagining travel

As the world adapts to “the new normal” following a period of limited international travel and national lockdowns, travelers are eager to get out and see the world in earnest.

As travel restrictions and Covid testing become a thing of the past, research reveals that 73% of people are more optimistic about travel than they were in 2022. While we head into 2023 in the midst of global economic and political uncertainty, almost three-quarters (72%) said traveling is still worth it.

The most popular types of vacations and experiences in 2023

For many, a change of scenery and a chance to soak in some sun is enough of a reason to go on vacation. However, 2023 is likely to see a shift in why we’re looking to get away, as well as the types of vacations we take.

travel predictions for 2023

Peace and pleasure pilgrimages

A vacation is a great way to unwind and relax, but in 2023 many travelers want to take it one step further and use their adventures to treat their minds, bodies and souls. 42% of travelers want to go on a break that focuses on their mental and physical health, including retreats to smooth the processes of pregnancy and menopause. Almost half (44%) want to go on meditation or mindfulness retreats.

Meanwhile, some travelers want to treat their bodies in other ways. Over a third (36%) want to go on an erotic escape and explore new kinks and ways of experiencing pleasure.

36% also revealed they want to try out psychedelic experiences with the help of cannabis or psychedelics like mushrooms or ayahuasca. This means 2023 could see more travelers heading to more countries where certain types of psychedelics are permitted, such as The Netherlands or Brazil .

travel predictions for 2023

Virtual reality inspiring travel choices

While the world isn’t ready to embrace sci-fi movie-esque travel just yet, it offers travelers a glimpse of what they can expect to see. 43% will use virtual reality to inspire their choices, with 46% more likely to travel somewhere they otherwise wouldn’t have if they could experience it virtually first.

However, some are keen to spend multiple days in the Metaverse, with over a third (35%) revealing they’d take a multi-day AR or VR travel experience. As haptic feedback technology advances, virtual travelers will soon be able to feel the sand between their toes and the sun on their skin without even having to step outside.

While this sounds exciting, it’s not enough to dissuade the majority (60%) of travelers, who agree that virtual travel isn’t as fulfilling as being there in person. This means our 2023 travel predictions don’t include travelers swapping sunglasses for VR goggles for the most part.

Taking travel off-grid

Following various international lockdowns in which many people weren’t allowed to leave their homes, let alone travel, we became reliant on technology for entertainment. Now that most restrictions have been lifted, travelers are keen to disconnect, with 55% wanting to spend their vacations off-grid.

travel predictions for 2023

But it doesn’t just stop at wanting to disconnect from technology, with more and more people craving a back-to-basics experience, many travelers are expressing a desire to use their vacations in 2023 as an opportunity to learn survival skills (58%). This includes learning how to source clean water (53%), light a fire from scratch (42%), forage for food in the wild (39%) and even how to prep for an apocalypse (39%).

Connecting with nature

Sitting in front of a cozy, crackling fireplace somewhere deep in the woods and miles from the nearest microchip is many travelers’ idea of bliss.

However, almost half (48%) would only consider going off-grid if it meant they could take a few luxuries and indulgences with them, and 53% revealed they’d need their phone and stable internet connection.

travel predictions for 2023

Looking for culture shocks

Many of us live our lives in a certain routine, and that includes our vacations. However, travelers are looking for a break from their routines, and 50% want to experience a culture shock in 2023.

Embracing the unfamiliar

When you find somewhere you enjoy traveling to, it can be tempting to revisit that same place on your next vacation, but in 2023 travelers intend to mix things up. Almost three-quarters (73%) want to experience travel out of their comfort zone, with 30% keen to explore lesser-known cities to find some hidden gems.

Plenty of travelers (38%) want an out-of-this-world culture shock, and to go on the hunt for UFOs. This means there will likely be an increase in visitors to extra-terrestrial hotspots such as [Roswell, New Mexico](https://www.booking.com/city/us/roswell.html).

Meanwhile, others may go further east: 47% of travelers are interested in exploring exotic delicacies such as the hottest chili pepper (the current world record is held by the California Reaper, bred in Rock Hill, South Carolina).

Budget-savvy traveling

With the global economy not showing any immediate signs of improvement as we head into 2023, travelers are becoming more budget-conscious, with 68% paying close attention to how much they’re spending on their adventures. However, despite the ongoing economic and energy crises, half (50%) say investing in a vacation is still a top priority.

travel predictions for 2023

Prioritizing travel spend

Following travel restrictions in 2020 and 2021, many travelers were able to save the money they would have otherwise spent on vacation. As a result, half (49%) will make up for it by spending more during their 2023 adventures, while 43% plan on indulging by splashing the cash to maximize their experience. A third (33%) revealed they like to indulge in shopping on vacation for things that aren’t available back home.

travel predictions for 2023

How are travelers saving money when booking vacations?

While many intend on living their best life while on vacation, travelers are finding ways to spend less in order to get there.

travel predictions for 2023

Almost two-thirds (63%) will keep a close eye on deals and hacks, with more than half (53%) happy to travel off-season or via longer routes. That means 2023’s off-season may be a little busier than last year’s, while the summer may be somewhat quieter than usual. This may help spread the crowds at busy attractions such as Walt Disney World .

61% of people also intend on planning their vacations further in advance, so expect to see fewer last-minute travelers in 2023.

Embracing ‘real life’ work travel

The pandemic allowed businesses to see the positive impact remote working could have, which led to many employers embracing a “work from anywhere” mentality. While employees have enjoyed hitting the beach during their lunch hour or working on their laptops by the pool, working while traveling trends are set to change in 2023.

Two-thirds (66%) of people want their trips to be strictly work-free in 2023. This is despite the 51% of people who want their employer to use the money saved from remote working to fund corporate travel or retreats.

Perhaps this is something businesses should consider, as 59% believe exploring somewhere new will inspire them to be more productive at work and 44% believe that ‘real life’ work trips help bring people together.

 Nostalgic escapes

Over the last couple of years, popular culture has seen a nostalgia resurgence of sorts, with 80s and 90s coming back into fashion. It seems as though the same will happen with travel in 2023, with almost nine in ten (88%) wanting to go on a nostalgic getaway.

23% of travelers want to escape to simpler times, when all we had to worry about was rewinding that rented VHS and how long the lines were for Space Mountain.

61% of travelers want to get their hearts racing with a trip to a theme park in 2023, with more than half (54%) planning on taking a family reunion-focused vacation. That means theme parks such as [Universal Orlando Resort](https://www.booking.com/district/us/orlando/universalstudios.html) may be visited by multi-generational families in 2023.

10 travel trend predictions for 2023

10 travel trend predictions for 2023

Posted by Claudia De Brito on 4 January 2023

Buzz words include adventure, purpose, nostalgia and extreme immersion

Lemongrass Marketing has compiled a report based on industry data of what it thinks will be the top 10 travel trends for 2023.

“The traditional holiday for many really is no more," says Lemongrass Marketing founder and CEO Mirjam Peternek-McCartney. "The cost of living will clearly have an impact as travellers will look for low-cost deals, and meaningful travel is also key. Purpose-led, immersion holidays will have more appeal than ever."

Travellers will want to feel an emotional connection to the places they visit and give back where they can. Other travel experiences high on the agenda for 2023 include specialised curated wellness retreats, working holidays and the rise of filming locations as television informs more of our holiday decisions .

Here are the trends for the travel trade to consider.

1.  Adventure No longer content with learning how to cook, paint or craft, travellers want more from their time away – inspired by TV shows like Born Survivor and Who Dares Wins. Getting in touch with nature and learning survival skills is the new 'upskilling' holiday. Booking.com reports that, in 2023, a considerable number of travellers will venture into the wilderness with friends (59%) or family (24%), motivated by a desire to learn essential survival skills (54%).

2.  Travelling on a budget Expedia’s 2023 travel trends report, 'The No-Normal', shows that budget travel is top of the agenda for 2023. Not surprising, considering the multiple crises the world is currently facing. ABTA reports that the majority of people still see travel as a must because they value the respite it gives. Hilton reports that 59% of the nation are looking to travel more in 2023 compared to 2022. But how will they fund it? Booking.com reports that almost two thirds (63%) will keep a close eye on deals with more than half (53%) happy to travel off-season or via longer routes.

3.  Travel with a purpose This year will see the rise of purposeful homestays. An example of this is Airbnb’s Withlocals initiative, a BCorp-certified platform to connect people with cultures by breaking down barriers between travellers and locals so they no longer live in separate worlds at the same destinations.

4.  Extended working holidays  Living as a digital nomad was a trend accelerated by the pandemic. Now, working from anywhere is firmly established as a way to live. It’s being taken to a new level with the launch of specialist service platforms that offer nomads support with visas and accommodation – and even help finding gyms to join and making friends.

5.  Culture shock Travellers want to embrace the unfamiliar in 2023 through extreme immersion and radical itineraries. There's a growing appetite for new locations and experiences, like hunting UFOs or seeking out the hottest chilli pepper. Booking.com reports that 50% of travellers want to experience a culture shock in 2023. What’s more, there has been a notable 200% increase in online searches for extreme sports.

6.  Wellness Retreats  Investing in travel for self-improvement, and personal and emotional development is going to be a breakout trend this year. Booking.com reports that 42% of travellers want a break that focuses on their mental and physical health, including retreats to smooth the processes of pregnancy and menopause. Almost half (44%) want to go on meditation or mindfulness retreats.

Google searches for “wellness retreat” have seen an increase of 1,605% over the past five years

7.  Netflix and travel Netflix and other streaming platforms provided accidental marketing for locations during lockdown and beyond with locations made famous by TV. These include shows like Bridgerton where Visit England has a specific page about where to find locations to visit from the show, a spike in travel interest in the French capital after the release of Emily in Paris and the popularity of The White Lotus locations .

8.  Nostalgia  Travel market research firm GWI reports that around 90% of consumers say they plan to take a domestic vacation in the next 12 months. There is one demographic that’s certainly more keen to stay close to home than others: new parents. This segment is craving familiarity, and searches for “new baby camping essentials” have increased by 71%.

9.  Technology-informed travel People spent a lot of 2022 talking about the metaverse and the creation of virtual environments. Singaporean brand M Social (part of Millennium Hotels and Resorts), became the world's first hospitality group to operate a hotel in the metaverse, when it launched the M Social Decentraland in 2022. Users can book rooms using cryptocurrency, and explore the hotel. So far, there aren’t many takers but VR has other more practical applications, such as showcasing destinations to potential visitors.

Booking.com found that 46% of travellers would be more likely to travel to previously undesirable destinations if they could experience them virtually first

10.  Travel brands becoming lifestyle brands In recent years, we've witnessed celebrities developing their own personal lifestyle brands, such as Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop. Hotels have tapped into this, too. It was pioneered by brands including Firmdale Hotels and Soho House, driving awareness and retail opportunities to the next level. Next-generation hotels are set to be the cultural hubs of their communities. They’ll achieve this with long-term residencies, public communal areas, co-working spaces, local cuisine and events that showcase the best of the local area.

Where to start? You’re in luck. We’ve read over 50 reports, blogs and articles and have analysed the 8 top travel brands’ predictions for 2023. These include some of the top industry voices including ABTA, Expedia, Booking.com and Hilton.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the most common mentions, and key statistics from each, so you know what’s set for the year ahead. Here’s our roundup...

1. Misplaced time

Misplaced time. It turns out absence does equal fondness (if only we had known this before…). The suggestion of revenge travel was a hot topic last year. Many felt that Covid had stolen their time and travel, and they were going to make up for it.

There were still barriers thrown from all directions though. From economic and political crises to returning restrictions, people are now more ready than ever to book a getaway. 46% say travel is more of a priority for them post-pandemic than it has been before.

Long Live Travel!

Our CEO's Thoughts

Keep doing what you are doing, but better. You’ve got to demonstrate better value than competitors to be successful. People's minds and bodies are crying out for time abroad (especially after this abysmal winter); however, their pockets might not be able to keep up, so give them as compelling a reason to Travel WITH YOU as possible.

What you can do?

Keep doing what you’re doing! Making sure they have the most frictionless booking process possible will go a long way to helping them book with you. If you can appeal to that sense of time fulfilment, even better.

2. Strip it down

Strip it down. It turns out people are looking for an escape ( 55% ), that means (for many) phones-free, off-grid and back to basics.

For a lot ( 46% ), this has a wellness aspect too. Respondents still often wanted tech integrated into their travel to help make it frictionless on a hotel holiday, but wanted to put the phone down and clock-out.

Quite a few (39%) were ready to learn survival skills for the impending apocalypse (and with the state of 2022, we can’t blame them). It’s about shaking off the realities of everyday life and a lot of the dreariness that can come with it. 2023 is about reconnecting with our roots, the past , and what’s essential to us as humans.

There’s definitely a place for switching off, but this also contradicts a lot of other travel trends - such as hotel customers ranking ‘free wifi’ in their top 10 requirements when searching for hotels. This post from my friend Justin at TripAdvisor highlights what people are ‘actually’ searching for, rather than predicted trends. There's a balance here. If you offer this, then yes, you're marketing should lean into it. But don't provide a ‘back to nature’ or ‘digital detox’ offering if it doesn't fit naturally for you. People will get annoyed with you for not giving them wifi!

What you can do?

It might be unethical to ask guests to stow their phone away on arrival unless you’re a silent retreat, but there’s still plenty of options. If you’re already a back-to-basics attraction, make sure you capitalise on this in your marketing. If you’re a more luxury destination make sure there’s a health and wellness emphasis.

3. Culture, not couture

Culture, not couture. This year, travellers no longer want to be in a hotel that could be anywhere in the world. They want to support local communities, experience authentic and meaningful travel that isn’t just a place to stay.

Connecting to the local culture was important to half of the respondents in the Hilton research and mentioned in most other predictions. A trend that we predict will keep evolving and growing.

I’m completely behind this one - local people and local experiences give everybody the authentic destinations they are looking for.

Partner with your local community and lift your local attractions. Have your staff give recommendations that are off-peak and away from the tourist traps. Display native artwork and artists if possible. These all work towards enhancing the immersive experience that you can provide. If you’re in transport, make sure you’re reaching, or letting others know how they can reach off-piste attractions with you.

4. Bang for your buck-et list

Bang for your buck-et list. Everyone this year wants to ensure they’re getting their money’s worth, at both ends of the spectrum too, necessities or luxury. This can mean booking early, off-peak, or travelling in a different way , but it’s all about maximising value.

There’s debate around whether all-inclusive, self-catering or half board is better value. Since people want their travel to mean something post-pandemic, we’re betting half-board. There’s no better way to get a taste for the local culture, but we wouldn’t turn down a good value all-inclusive either.

Budget brands offering higher value options is great for growing revenue. Across our clients, we find that adding extra value items, where they can build a higher quality package, works well and delivers greater returns. On the flip side, Luxury offering basic, in travel doesn't work too well - but there is a solution and its links with the trend above. If you are offering a luxury product, but want to attract wider audiences who might not be as affluent as your typical target market, then why not look at some kind of half board, package - or all-inclusive, but with 2 nights of dining not included, at a reduced price.

BUT the trick here is rather than leaving your customers to their own devices to figure out where they are eating, demonstrate that luxury service you are famous for, by providing them with a list of local, quality and cost-effective dining options, where they can get a flavour for the area. This is a win, win-win.

The customer wins, with a more manageable price for their ‘luxury’ stay, the local community wins because you are sharing your guests with other tourism businesses in the vicinity, and your brand wins, by demonstrating quality service.

Obviously this one fully depends on the kind of provider you are right? Well, that’s mostly true, but that doesn’t mean you can’t offer different price points to suit more needs. For example, the best seats in the theatre sell out first.

People that have money to spend want a premium experience, so if you’re a budget business, why not add an ultra premium experience with the price to boot? And if you’re a premium brand? Well, there’s a reason why Waitrose introduced their “essentials” range. It’s better they shop with you, than someone else right? Just be sure to give it an authentic touch!

5. pushing the boat out.

Pushing the boat out. People want something different. Whether it’s a new culture, an out-of-comfort-zone experience ( 73% ), silent retreat (40%) or UFO spotting (yes, 38% wanted that), they’re looking for more than a holiday. They’re looking for personal growth, connection and depth after too long in isolation. New and memorable experiences are vital in travel at the moment.

This is one of the easiest things that any travel brand can do. Either partner with local experiences, package this up and offer it to your customers (many good hotels are doing this already).

Alternatively, and being mindful of stretched budgets this year, with a little time and effort, you can also simply curate a list of local experiences, or places that guests/visitors can experience at their own pace and then market this online, or as part of a ‘check-in’ email, or as a video you make for your guests that loops on a screen at your venue etc… This still ensures your customers have a different and authentic, wider experience.

Whether you offer a more niche experience yourself, or partner with one nearby, having a unique angle to your brand could make a big difference this year. What do you offer that they couldn’t find anywhere else? Or at least not in your area? A great idea that’s being used in another country could be used in yours.

6. Bike, hike, rail and sail

Bike, hike, rail and sail Looking for different ways to travel is the new black. There are many reasons that we could be seeing a rise in road trips ( 23% ) and railway revivals , like the financial, scenic or environmental benefits.

Not only this, there’s an uptick in walking, cycling, even e-biking holidays and taking to the seas. So, 2023 might be the year of the road, land or sea less travelled.

I would love for there to be a reduction in airline usage to get to more local destinations, but it's incredibly difficult for many customers to be able to mitigate the time it takes using other forms of transport. Where there is an equal time trade-off, then it's a fair fight, and social and political movements support not travelling by plane. But when it's going to take significantly more time to travel via an alternative method, you need to give customers a better reason, or more support.

Simply put, in order for other transport modes to effectively complete with air travel, when their journey time is a lot longer, they have to show customers how they can use this additional time, in the most exciting way.

Take DFDS Ferries, their Newcastle to Amsterdam Mini cruise, which clearly takes longer than flying to Amsterdam, but the overall experience is fantastic. The journey truly is already a part of the holiday, with fantastic sights at sea of all kinds of marine life, lovely food, and great onboard entertainment.

This offering can compete with flights, but if your travel provider isn't offering something for you to do with the additional hours it's going to take, then why would a customer bother?

If you’re in transport, this is your chance to sell yourself and lean into the things they can get with you, but not on another form of transport. If you’re a destination, highlight ways to get to you that don’t involve a plane.

Values . Hotels are making more inclusive and environmentally friendly efforts, and so are travellers . 90% of consumers are looking for sustainable options when travelling. From travel, to packing and consumption, it's all in a bid to be more eco-conscious . Many are becoming aware of, or actively seeking, hotels with good values from inclusivity to fair treatment of employees too.

I couldn't agree more. Unless you're authentic here, you will be accused of Greenwashing, so either way - a sustainability strategy is absolutely key for your business, in order for you to exist in 5 years' time.

Good business. Sorry, there’s no shortcut or quick fix here. If it's fake, people will know. The key here is if you value your employees, customers and planet, they will value you in turn. Be proud of your efforts and display them somewhere they can be found, but only if you mean it.

8. Bleisure doing business with you

Bleisure doing business with you. Mixing business with leisure (or 'B leisure ' as it’s been coined) is a real mixed bag itself. Whilst 66% of Booking.com respondents wanted nothing to do with work whilst on holiday, many are happy to extend work trips for a few days to get a little extra free time out of them. Bleisure is going to be all the rage this year though, with people happy to mix the two and make the most of it.

This is an important trend, and potentially overplayed by the business travel sector. Overall, Business travel has not recovered post-pandemic, and many (including myself) don't think it ever will. More and more people are using video calls, rather than face-to-face meetings. More events are online (even though they aren't as good).

Overall, business travel is down, and IMO will never get back to where it is. So, for business travel organisations, inspiring business travellers to stay an extra day or two, is sensible and essential really. But let's not get carried away here, I've got 3 kids and a wife at home, so I'm not going to be extending many of my international business trips, to travel around a destination on my own for 2-3 days. I don't think I'd get away with it!

What I'm trying to point out here, is that this works best for business travellers, with no dependents at home (which can be effectively targeted via digital advertising by the way); otherwise, I think this trend is a temporary blip, that will soon even out.

Bonus Round...

travel predictions for 2023

With over 18 years of experience working in the travel and tourism industry, we’re seeing additional trends coming from our clients and networks for 2023 too.

2023 is the year of maximising value and minimising overwhelm.

We know what restrictions feel like a little too well at the moment, so this year is about careful carelessness. Throwing caution to a gentle breeze if you will, letting go to find ourselves.

The delayed gap year

With school leavers and graduates forced to hand their gap years to Covid, many spent that furlough time saving. It’s their time to fly the nest (potentially metaphorically), and with TikTok giving all the scenic recommendations under the sun (more literally), there’s a chance for an influx of young groups to travel to all corners of the world.

What you can do: If you’d like to attract this market you’ve got to be present where they’re spending their time. Digital channels will help you reach these audiences, but your offering will need to be worth their time, as they’ve waited for this trip, they want to make it count.

Organised travel experiences

Generic travel and planning is a lot of work, effort and with the whole world being moved online digitally, we know people are heading to trusted travel providers.

But they want more than just an organised holiday, people realise their time off now is once again limited, and they want every moment of it to count. Organised travel saves their time and effort for maximised experience where it counts. Whether it’s arts and culture tours or group cycles around Egypt, there is something for absolutely everyone, alone or not. With a full set itinerary and knowledge you’re getting a credible service.

Make sure your itineraries all line up. They need to be quality to generate the quantity. Make it as easy as possible for the consumer to book.

So, here we are again. Another start to the year. Another load of predictions. But as the past three years have shown, anything can happen. We look forward to working with the travel industry to make this year as successful as possible for people, but most importantly, our planet too.

Travel predictions 2023: 13 things to expect from airlines, according to flight expert.

High prices due to staff shortages dominated air travel throughout 2022 , while the year closed out in a frantic flurry of flight delays and cancellations due to inclement weather and FAA system outages . What’s expected for flyers in 2023? According to Scott Keyes of Going, previously known as Scott’s Cheap Flights, there’s plenty to be excited about — especially for those looking for savings and roomier flights.

See: Why Buying Property in These Vacation Destinations Could Be a Great Investment Read: Get Your Credit Score On Track With These 3 Tips for Success Find: How 2023 Recession Will Differ From 2008 and How You Should Prepare Differently

Airfare will fall at least 5%

Keyes is 70% confident that airfare will fall by at least 5% compared to 2022. Right now, average airfares are 36% higher than they were this time last year.

Prices on Flights to Asia Will Fall

Keyes has 90% confidence that China, which has been holding fast to COVID-19 travel restrictions, will continue to smoothly reopen and, as a result, get less expensive to travel to and from. Travel to other countries in Asia should follow suit.

There Will Be More ‘Mistake Fares’

In 2022, Going found seven “mistake fares” for members. These included Iceland for $100 round trip, London/Amsterdam for $174 round trip and Tokyo for $316 round trip. Keyes is 60% confident that Going will find at least eight mistake fares this year.

Cheap Flights to Tokyo Will Abound

Going uncovered only 82 cheap flights to Tokyo in 2022. Now that Japan has fully reopened, Keyes is 80% confident many more cheap airfare deals will surface in 2023.

Flights Will Be Less Full

Flights were pretty crowded in 2022, but thanks to less demand and more flight volume, Keyes is 70% confident that more empty seats will abound in 2023.

Flight Volume Will Be Below 2019 Levels

In 2019, U.S airlines averaged more than 26,000 flights per day, compared to 22,300 in 2022. Keyes has 80% confidence that the 14% gap will shrink by a fair amount, but that we won’t reach 2019 levels in 2023.

Seat Volume Will Exceed 2019 Levels

In 2022, the number of daily seats was down 7% (2.93 million vs. 3.16 million in 2019). Keyes is 60% confident that we’ll top pre-pandemic levels in 2023.

The Fed Will Step in To Block the Spirit/JetBlue Merger.

Keyes is 60% confident that federal regulators will move in to block the merger between JetBlue and Spirit because of its adverse impact on airfares and choice for consumers.

There Will Be No Bankruptcies Among Major U.S Airlines

Keyes is very confident (90%) that we will see no major U.S airlines enter bankruptcy in 2023.

More Countries Will Announce Plans To Lift Airport Liquid Restrictions

Keyes has 70% confidence that at least three more countries will announce plans to lift airport liquid restrictions. The U.K has already done this. They announced in December that by June 2024, air travelers will once again be allowed to bring liquids through security.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) Will Propose Its Final Rule On Flight Refunds

Last August, the DOT proposed a regulation that would give travelers’ rights to a refund in case of long delays or pandemic restrictions. Keyes is 60% confident that the DOT will propose a final rule similar to its initial proposal in 2023.

One of the Big Six U.S Airlines Will Acquire A Smaller Carrier

Keyes is 60% confident that one of the six largest U.S airlines (American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue or Southwest) will try to purchase a smaller carrier.

There Will Be Fewer Flight Cancellations

Keyes is 70% confident that there will be fewer flights canceled in 2023 than there were in 2022.

WeTravel Academy Course: Google Analytics For Travel Businesses

7 Travel Predictions for 2023

2023 is set to be a big year for travel. To help you prepare your business for what’s ahead, here are some of the biggest travel predictions for 2023.

Nostalgic Getaways Are The Leading Reason For Travel

There are many different reasons why people will be planning trips in 2023, but the main reason is to go on a nostalgic getaway.

According to research conducted by Booking.com , 88% of people agree that this will be the most popular type of vacation.

Here is a look at other popular types of vacations:

  • Community-minded vacations (80%)
  • Blowing the budget trips (80%)
  • Laid-back luxe life vacations (78%)
  • Daily rental breaks (74%)
  • Out-of-comfort zone travel (73%)
  • Nightlife-centric vacations (72%)
  • Flashpacking (72%)
  • Adventurous backpacking (70%)
  • Traveling for a purpose (69%)
  • Surviving the wilderness (67%)

For a travel business, it's interesting to comprehend what kinds of travel experiences people are looking to have and what is inspiring them to travel.

With 80% of people agreeing that “blow the budget” trips will be the reason they travel, and 78% agreeing on “luxe life” vacations, it’s clear that 2023’s travelers are planning to spend a lot of money while traveling.

This is a surefire way to ensure that your marketing efforts target your audience accordingly.

Greater Focus On Wellness Travel

Another key focus on big travel predictions for 2023 will be on wellness travel.

For the year ahead, many travelers will be looking for more than just relaxation and fun on their trips. Instead, they will be focused more on travel that aligns with the mind, body, and soul.

Travel predictions for 2023

42% of travelers say they want to plan a trip to improve their mental and physical health. This includes retreats to assist with pregnancy and menopause.

44% of travelers want to go on spiritual meditation and mindfulness retreats .

There is also going to be a rise in the popularity of other kinds of mind and body travel experiences. 36% of travelers are interested in planning some kind of erotic travel experience where they can explore.

A Look At Other Expected Trends

The leader of niche travel experiences remains food with 47% of travelers expecting to plan trips around eccentric eating. Again, this aligns with the luxury, blow-the-budget style trips as predicted above.

It's interesting to understand these kinds of niche travel experiences and motivations because it could offer some insights into the kind of destinations and target audiences that travel companies should be focusing on.

According to the same study cited above, here are some of the other most popular niche travel experiences that travelers are expected to focus on in 2023:

  • Silent retreat (40%)
  • Learning about wilderness survival (39%)
  • Extraterrestrial exploration holidays (38%)
  • Virtual vacations (35%)
  • Transformation vacations (32%)

Travel Is Picking Up

There is a definite increase in interest in travel, with 73% of people being more optimistic about travel in 2023 than they were the previous year.

payment solutions for travel

At the same time, an impressive 72% of people believe that travel is still a worthwhile investment, even though the world is in the middle of so much political and economic instability. This comes as a major change to the total shutdown of travel during the pandemic.

So, as a travel business, this is good news. There seems to be a greater rise in demand and excitement around travel as we head into the new year.

Increase In Sustainable Travel

Sustainability is an increasingly important focus of travel and it's something that more travelers are actively seeking as we head into 2023.

74% of travelers from a study reveal that they would be happy to pay more for travel experiences if they know that their money is going toward more sustainable travel.

In the same study, 70% of travelers agreed that traveling more sustainably improves the overall travel experience.

Clearly, sustainability is an important focus in the world of travel. And this isn’t strictly limited to ecological sustainability. Travelers are actively looking to use companies that focus more on empowering local communities, benefiting the local economy, and preserving the natural and cultural heritage of a destination.

So, if your travel business does not have a clear stance towards sustainability or more purposeful travel, then it could be a good time to start focusing on this area.

Travelers Want To Disconnect

As mentioned, there is expected to be a rise in expensive and luxurious travel trends in 2023. At the same time, a large portion of travelers is also looking to totally disconnect when they go traveling in 2023.

Travel predictions for 2023

This is likely due to the “overreliance” on technology that people have been facing over the last two years.

One of the more interesting travel predictions for 2023 is that 55% of travelers are wanting to spend their vacations off the grid. 36% of employed people want to travel to a destination with no wifi, and 39% of student travelers are looking forward to the challenge of being off the grid.

However, 48% of travelers say that they only want to travel off the grid if they can take some luxuries and indulgences with them. In the same study, 53% of travelers say they would need their phone and a stable internet connection if they plan to experience back-to-nature style travel.

Off-the-grid travel seems to appeal most to millennials, where 62% agree that it would provide an escape from reality. This figure decreases with older generations, as only 30% of ages 76 - 93 agree that off-grid travel would provide this kind of escape.

While we’re on the topic of back-to-basics travel, 58% of travelers said that they would be happy to use traveling in 2023 to learn more about nature survival skills.

Travel Advisors Are Popular For All Ages

Good news for the travel industry - 76% of travelers have agreed that there is an increased value in additional travel services, like using a travel advisor.

This applies to travelers of all ages, with Gen Zers and Millenials seeing an increasing demand for expert travel advisors who can save them time and energy.

payment solutions for travel

This goes back to the surging popularity of luxury travel, where travelers would prefer to have all of their logistics and arrangements organized for them. Sure, travelers can organize this themselves, yes it seems as though they would prefer not to.

So, as a travel business, it seems there is greater demand for value-added services like expert travel advisory. This is an exciting prospect as we enter a new year of travel.

Budget Priorities In Travel

Looking at travel predictions for 2023, one of the most important factors to consider is where travelers plan to spend their budget .

This is essential for travel businesses to understand what kinds of experiences and areas to focus on in their trips.

Out of all the different travel elements, food remains the biggest budget priority, with 34% of 2023’s travelers prioritizing restaurants and dining experiences.

Coming in closely behind this is accommodation, with 32% of travelers looking to book accommodation that closely aligns with their travel needs and offers better facilities - like a pool or a central location.

According to the same study, here are some of the other key travel budget priorities we will see in 2023:

  • All-inclusive accommodation options: 28%
  • Travel insurance: 27%
  • Direct flights or modes of transport straight to the destination: 25%
  • Shopping for souvenirs: 25%
  • Pre-booked tickets for attractions while traveling: 22%
  • Unique destination experiences, like sky diving or hot air ballooning: 19%
  • Spending extra on a special experience for a loved one: 17%
  • Accommodation upgrades: 17%
  • Personal tours of a destination: 17%
  • Supporting local businesses: 17%

How To Prepare For These Upcoming Travel Trends

Now that you understand some of the top travel predictions for 2023, it's important that your tour company is properly prepared for a new year of travel.

If there’s anything we can take from these stats, it's that travel is on an upward path, and travelers are excited to spend money traveling and enjoy new experiences.

Here are some of the best ways your travel business can prepare for 2023.

Use An Effective Travel Payment Solution

Using the right payment solutions for travel is essential for offering a seamless customer experience.

A travel booking and payment system will make it easier to accept bookings on your website and handle the rising demand for travel experiences.

It will also make it effortless for customers to make advanced travel bookings - a key offering in 2023.

Not only this but using an efficient software solution will make it easier for you to offer a greater variety of travel experiences. If you can skillfully create new booking pages, or customize your current pages, then your business can create flexible packages and experiences to match your customers' needs.

This is a great way to stay on top of the year's travel predictions and trends in order to sell more tours.

Provide More Context Behind Your Travel Experiences

Now is the time to start providing your customers with more context behind the travel experiences you offer.

As more people seek sustainability or a greater social impact in travel, it's crucial that you include these elements clearly in your package descriptions and offers.

Travel predictions for 2023

Highlight the fact that your tour gives back to the local economy , that you only support local businesses, or that you help to boost the economy of local villages/communities.

If anything like this is relevant to your tours, then be sure to include the details in your travel booking pages. This can entice travelers to book their experiences with your travel business.

Consider Off-Season Travel

With rising demand and excitement around travel, chances are there will be more off-season travelers looking toward your business in 2023.

Be prepared for this by offering a wider range of off-season travel experiences. This can also be a great time to run special promotions and offers to help increase bookings throughout the year.

Add A Wellness Element

With a rising interest in health, wellness , and conscious travel, now would be a suitable time to incorporate a wellness element into your travel experiences.

You don't have to be a specialized wellness travel provider, but you might want to start thinking about ways that you can expand into this area.

Consider including a wellness retreat or two in your travel offering if you don't have one already. You could focus on smaller group tours with a wellness theme, or look into partnering with another wellness business.

This could be a fantastic way to boost travel sales in 2023.

Summary

While we can never be sure of exactly what the year ahead will bring, we do know that there is a lot of interest and excitement around traveling in 2023.

Travelers are excited to try new experiences and prioritize travel as an investment in the coming year.

By staying on top of the trends and preparing your tour business with the right tools and tactics now, you’ll be in a better position to respond to these trends and reap the rewards in 2023.

This could give your travel company a major boost in revenue and set you apart from the competition.

FORECAST January 17, 2024

travel predictions for 2023

Driven by Tourism Economics' travel forecasting model, the latest U.S. Travel Forecast projects the following:

International travel to the U.S. is growing quickly but is still far from a full pre-pandemic recovery.

An expected global macroeconomic slowdown, a strong dollar, and lengthy visa wait times could inhibit future growth, with volume reaching 98% of 2019 levels in 2024 (up from 84% recovered in 2023) and achieving a full recovery in 2025. Spending levels, when adjusted for inflation, are not expected to recover until 2026.

Other countries with whom the U.S. directly competes have recovered their pre-pandemic visitation rates more quickly, and some countries—such as France and Spain—have even increased their share of the global travel market. Meanwhile, U.S. global market share is declining.

Business travel is still expected to grow in 2024, albeit at a slower rate.

Volume in the sector is expected to end the year at 95% of 2019 levels—up from 89% recovered in 2023. Slowing economic growth will hinder domestic business travel’s recovery, with a full comeback in volume not expected until 2026. Domestic business travel spending is not expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels within the range of the forecast.

Domestic leisure growth decelerated through three quarters of 2023 as consumer spending slowed amid higher borrowing costs, tighter credit conditions and the restart of student loan repayments.

The sector achieved a full recovery to pre-pandemic levels in 2022.

To complement the travel forecast table, U.S. Travel has released an accompanying slide deck , which provides context for the latest projections. This document, which appears on the right under "downloads," is available exclusively to U.S. Travel members.

Which travel trends will gain ground in 2023?

tendances voyage 2023 Booking

To understand how travel will be reimagined in 2023, Booking.com commissioned an in-depth study of over 24,000 travellers in 32 countries to predict the 7 emerging travel trends.

Despite a complex economic and geopolitical context around the world, the need to travel is still present for 72% of people. If 2022 was the year of the triumphant return of travel, 2023 will be the year of its creative reinvention according to Booking, which unveils the major tourism trends to come based on a vast study.

At a time of global upheaval when war, inflation and urgent concerns about climate change continue to radically change the world, people find themselves in a deep tug-of-war, struggling to reconcile what is important to them with their desire to travel. The travel forecast for 2023 reflects this sentiment, revealing that travellers' needs are changing dramatically.

If the last few years have taught us anything, it is that travel should not be taken for granted. This year's travel predictions study shows the undercurrent of paradoxical intentional behaviours that will make us all more comfortable in the face of relentless instability. It also shows that travel is a way to seek moments of happiness and escape to counterbalance the heavy realities of our information flows.

Arjan Dijk, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Booking.com

The survivalist trend in the spotlight

Camouflaged cabins, campfire cooking and compasses; going off the grid will never be as sought after as it is in 2023. 44% of travellers want to get back to basics and are looking for an off-grid holiday to escape reality, disconnect and live with the bare essentials. While the survivalist phenomenon is not so new, its current popularity reflects a growing interest among people in being able to fend for themselves in sometimes hostile conditions. This trend also reflects a certain anxiety about the times ahead.

In addition, 58% of travellers also want to use their travels in 2023 to learn survival skills, including how to find clean water for 53%, how to start a fire from scratch for 42%, how to forage for food in the wild and even how to prepare for the apocalypse for 39%.

We can also expect to see more eco-tours to cater for the needs of city dwellers who lack a connection to nature, as well as accommodation that offers advice to guests on how to be more self-sufficient. The number of wilderness survival schools is also expected to increase, where travellers will learn the essential skills to survive a cataclysmic event.

The boom in virtual travel continues

More than 40% of the world's travellers say they will turn to virtual reality next year to choose their holidays. In 2023, travel will enter the ever-evolving 3D virtual space of the metaverse in earnest . Indeed, 35% say they will embark on a multi-day travel experience in Virtual or Augmented Reality. Travellers will no longer be limited by physics and will be able to experience different travel experiences within the metaverse.

Travellers will be more adventurous in their travel choices in real life, having been able to visit them in the metaverse first via their avatars. For example, 46% of travellers are more likely to travel to destinations they would not have previously considered after experiencing them virtually. However, tour operators and other tourism professionals can rest assured that 60% think that a virtual experience is not satisfying enough to cross a destination off their wish list.

Stepping out of your comfort zone

More and more travellers want to experience and immerse themselves in a new culture for the duration of their stay. Half of the world's travellers want to experience a complete culture shock in 2023, whether it's travelling to a place with completely different cultural experiences and languages or exploring lesser-known cities and getting off the beaten track.

In 2023, travellers will be looking for unique holidays that shock, surprise and delight. With 73% of people looking forward to trips 'outside their comfort zone' that push them to their limits, there will be an influx of niche experiences.

For example, 47% are looking for the most exotic food in the world, such as the hottest chilli, while 38% want to use their holiday to go on an alien exploration tour with UFOs or aliens. In addition, 28% want to buy a single ticket in 2023 and follow their instincts wherever they lead.

In search of lost time

Against a backdrop of global instability and a desire to get away from it all, people intend to have travel experiences that recall simpler times. Nostalgic getaways that provide the thrill of reliving the glory days top the wish list in 2023 for 88% of respondents.

There is a desire, even among younger generations, to disappear into the romance of a pre-digital age, with 23% of travellers chasing experiences that evoke emotional memories of a bygone era, such as visiting sites or attractions featured in iconic retro films.

With millennials now parents of young children, there will be an increase in destinations once popular in the 80s and 90s, such as Budva in Montenegro, a glamorous alternative to St Tropez for 80s celebrities, or Bolzano in Italy, popular for its retro Christmas markets. These young people will be the first to book themed accommodation that will transport them back to an era that is close to their hearts, and 54% of them will probably do so with their family by their side.

A healthy mind in a healthy body

In 2023, travel is expected to put mind and body wellness at the forefront with a fully immersive and sometimes unconventional approach. To refocus the mind, meditation and mindfulness trips are popular with 44% of global travellers while 40% seek peace in a silent retreat. Also, 42% want to take a health break focusing on mental health, transformative health or life milestones like menopause or pregnancy.

For those seeking more advanced spiritual experiences, alternative substances such as herbal psychedelics will become a more common offering, with 36% wanting to try this type of experiential wellness experience as part of their travels in 2023.

Bleisure more trendy than ever

While business travel will be the order of the day in 2023, it will have a much larger leisure component. Employees are looking for more opportunities to build team camaraderie, reflecting a growing demand to combine business travel with recreational time. Indeed, 44% of the global workforce looks forward to their employer planning a 'real life' business trip to bring people together.

In response, 2023 will see an increase in corporate travel where the focus will be on relationship building and corporate leisure rather than work. Employers will gamify the retreat experience and immerse staff in a world where teamwork is the only option. Trips will then be themed, for example, with a 'survivor' themed stay in luxury cabins or country farms, with communal cooking and outdoor adventure activities.

Furthermore, 59% of workers worldwide believe that exploring new places will make them more productive at work. This trend benefits both employees and companies.

Travelling at the best price without depriving yourself

Against a backdrop of global economic uncertainty, travellers in 2023 will continue to prioritise travel, but they will be more mindful of how to make the most of their travel budget and what takes priority. While 50% of travellers say that investing in a holiday remains a top priority for them, 68% continue to prioritise travel while seeking to get more value for money.

In 2023, developing financially savvy itineraries will be paramount. Travellers will plan their budgets more tightly by taking advantage of offers, tips and timely travel for 63% and by focusing on value for money through discounts and loyalty schemes for 60%.

For example, 53% will look to save money by considering off-season destinations or longer itineraries, while 61% will plan their trip further in advance in the hope of getting a better deal. More than half think that the best use of their budget is to opt for one or two longer holidays rather than several short breaks.

In this context, many travellers are also surprisingly willing to increase their spending, or even splurge, on the elements of their trip that matter most to them. Finally, 49% admit that they plan to be more indulgent in their spending habits while on holiday to make up for the lack of travel over the past two years, while 43% plan to spend lavishly to ensure that they maximise their trip and make every experience worthwhile.

115 Million Americans Expected to Travel over Christmas, New Year’s

Second highest year-end holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

travel predictions for 2023

WASHINGTON, DC (December 11, 2023) – AAA projects 115.2 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the 10-day year-end holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of domestic travelers is a 2.2% increase over last year and the second highest year-end travel forecast since 2000, when AAA began tracking holiday travel. 2019 remains the busiest Christmas and New Year’s travel period on record with 119 million travelers.

“This year-end holiday forecast, with an additional 2.5 million travelers compared to last year, mirrors what AAA Travel has been observing throughout 2023,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “More Americans are investing in travel, despite the cost, to make memories with loved ones and experience new places.”

travel predictions for 2023

Airports are expected to be the busiest they’ve ever been over the Christmas and New Year’s travel period. AAA projects 7.5 million air travelers this holiday season, surpassing 2019’s record of 7.3 million passengers. Average ticket prices are slightly lower than last year. According to AAA booking data, the average price for a roundtrip ticket to Orlando this holiday season is $613, down from $735 last year. A roundtrip ticket to Las Vegas is $508 now compared to $705 in 2022. “It depends on your desired route and destination. There are last-minute deals to be found, but if your preference is a nonstop flight with seat selection, AAA recommends booking well in advance and protecting your investment with travel insurance,” Twidale added.

The number of people traveling by other modes, like bus, train, and cruise, is projected to surpass 2019. AAA expects more than 4 million Americans will take alternative transportation over Christmas and New Year’s compared to 3.66 million in 2022 and 3.89 million in 2019. Demand for cruises has skyrocketed post-pandemic, and the industry is now preparing for the wave of bookings that traditionally happens at the start of the new year. “Savvy travelers know that right after the holidays is the best time to book a cruise,” Twidale said. “That’s when cruise lines offer some of the best deals, and AAA members get exclusive benefits in addition to those discounts.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says there will be several days of potentially bad traffic during the 10-day holiday period. Saturday, December 23, and Thursday, December 28, will be the most congested days on the road. INRIX also says Saturday, December 30, when many people will be heading back home from their holiday destinations or traveling for New Year’s Eve, will see an increase in traffic compared to a normal Saturday. The best times to hit the road are before lunchtime or after 7pm.

“Nationwide, drivers could see travel times up to 20% longer this holiday season. In major metros, especially in Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington, DC, drivers could experience nearly double the typical delays,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Avoid peak commuting hours and use traffic apps, local DOT notifications, and 511 services to minimize holiday travel traffic frustrations.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top year-end holiday destinations  .

This holiday season, many travelers are heading to warm weather destinations like Florida and the Caribbean, tourist hotspots like New York and Las Vegas, and European cities like London and Rome. Here are top domestic and international destinations, based on AAA flight booking data.

Airport Parking Tips

With a record number of air travelers expected this holiday season, AAA recommends travelers plan ahead and take precautions when driving to the airport and parking their vehicles.

  • Reserve a parking spot ahead of time to save time and money.
  • Choose a well-lit, secure garage.
  • On-site garages tend to be more expensive but offer convenience and peace of mind given their proximity to the terminals.
  • If choosing off-site parking, look for reputable businesses like The Parking Spot which is securely fenced and offers a shuttle to the airport (AAA members get a discount).
  • Opt for covered parking, if you live in an area expecting inclement weather.
  • Remove valuables from your vehicle.
  • Lock doors and roll up windows.
  • Take a photo of your spot to remember where you parked.
  • Keep your ticket – and receipt, if you prepaid – handy to show when exiting.

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from S&P Global Market Intelligence’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of October 9, 2023.

*Year-End Holiday Travel Period

For the purposes of this forecast, the year-end holiday travel period is defined as the 10-day period from Saturday, December 23, 2023 to Monday, January 1, 2024.

Travel Trend Forecast: Top Travel Trends in 2024 (and beyond!)

For some of us, the last few years have greatly impacted how we live, work, and travel. With restrictions around the globe effectively gone, and travel making a BIG comeback, let’s take a look at a few major trends we’ll be seeing in 2023/24 and beyond!

Epic Trips Are the Newest Travel Trend

Revenge travel has never been hotter, and big, bucket-list trips are taking travelers (and travel advisors) by storm. After all that time spent at home, in lockdown, most people want to go big. They are trying to feel relief after teaching their kids through remote schooling. Simply saving money that would ordinarily be spent on holidays is another way to supplement epic travels. Whichever it is, travelers are ready to go all out on their next escape.

Active travelers are planning treks across the Serengeti. Looking to scale Machu Pichu. Luxury lovers are considering pampered stays at the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, or yachting across the Mediterranean. And honeymooners are dreaming about not just one, but two or more honeymoon destinations – all rolled into a loved-up mega getaway!

Honeymooners are even splurging when it comes to their honeymoons like never before!

Off-Grid Travel – Unplug and Reconnect with Nature

In today’s digital age, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of technology and never really disconnect from the world. But what if there was a way to travel without having to worry about being connected 24/7? Enter, off-grid travel.

What is an off-grid vacation? An off-grid vacation is a vacation where you disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. This can mean anything from camping in the wilderness to renting a cabin in the woods. And while it might sound like a lot of work, there are actually many benefits to taking an off-grid vacation.

Here are three reasons why you should consider going off-grid on your travel trendy trip:

  • You’ll Be Forced to Connect with Your Surroundings . When you’re not distracted by your phone or computer, you’re able to really take in your surroundings and connect with the place you’re visiting. Instead of looking at everything through a screen, you can actually smell the flowers. Feel the sand between your toes. Taste the local cuisine. By disconnecting from technology, you’re able to connect with nature in a whole new way.
  • You Can Slow Down and Enjoy the Journey . In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the destination and forget about enjoying the journey. But when you go off-grid, you’re forced to slow down and take things one step at a time. And trust us, this is a good thing! By slowing down, you can truly savor every moment and create lasting memories that will stay with you long after your trip is over.
  • You Might Just Find Yourself More Productive . It might seem counterintuitive, but by disconnecting from technology, you might just find yourself more productive. That’s because when you don’t have constant access to your email or social media, you can focus on what’s important – like enjoying your vacation! So if you’re looking to disconnect from work and clear your mind, going off-grid is definitely the way to do it.

If you’re looking for a vacation that will help you relax, recharge, and reset, then we recommend giving off-grid travel a try. Trust us – it’s worth it! Not only will you be able to connect with your surroundings in a whole new way, but you can also slow down and enjoy the journey. And who knows? You might just find yourself more productive in the process!

Workcations

With remote work here to stay, more employees are taking their laptops on the road and blurring the lines between work and play. I’ve seen trends in weeklong escapes to a cabin. I’ve also seen month-long tropical getaways, as long as there’s WiFi. Workcations are totally possible.

While gracing the 2024 travel trends list, workcations are not new. Digital nomads have been plugging away on their laptops for years in the jungles of Costa Rica. They’ve been to the beaches of Mexico , and at cafes in Paris. Now it’s just an option for an increasing number of remote workers.

Travel trends for 2024 increasingly lean toward nature and eco-friendly travel. The best places to take your office on vacation are ones where you’re surrounded by stunning views. But also respect for the environment. From a lavish beach in Costa Rica to an artistic cityscape in Spain, there are plenty of travel destinations sure to boost morale. And they reinvigorate your office atmosphere. Don’t forget to check out travel packages. Some offer a combination of culture, sightseeing, and sustainability so you not only have a great time but also help protect our planet!

Staycations- The Continuing Travel Trend

Something else that we’ve all done a lot of these last few years is staying home. And I know that there’s great comfort in your own space. There’s also something to be said for soft high-thread-count sheets, room service, and uninterrupted quiet time.

For some who are unable to travel given the current pandemic, staycations can provide the perfect antidote. From local spa visits and hotel stays to discovering nearby attractions, travelers don’t need to venture far to relax, unwind, or explore somewhere new. My favorite, is boat tours within your own city!

There’s no better way to travel in 2024 than with a staycation. Relaxing at home, enjoying travel within your own city or country—it’s the hot travel trend this year! The best places to enjoy a staycation will depend on personal preference. If your a history buff, I highly recommend Philadelphia .

Some great places to get started: the beach by day and luxurious spas by night; mountain trails for the perfect blend of adventure and peace; perhaps even a lakeside cottage in the countryside for a quiet escape from everyday life.

If you live near a big city, ask yourself, how long has it been since you’ve explored it? Additionally, being cooped up in the house for a couple of years means that some of these cities may have changed! Some for the better! Check them out, and relearn their history and charm!

Niche Travel

Travel is deeply personal, and for many, their trip is built around a specific theme or desire to learn.

Growing with popular demand is voluntourism. This usually means combining your holiday with giving back. It could also mean culinary tourism with a focus on regional cuisine, chefs, and cooking classes. In addition, Agro Tourism (visiting working farms or ranches), polar tourism, and even getting in line for space tourism.

Niche travel, also known as experiential travel, has risen to popularity over the last decade. This travel trend focuses on providing unique experiences through exploring interests or hobbies outside of your normal scope. Perhaps you’re a nature enthusiast who wants to explore some of the world’s most remote camping spots.

Or maybe you’re a culture vulture who loves to travel and experience different cultures through festivals or cuisine while meeting locals. Whatever journey calls your name, niche travel can provide experiences that you’ll never forget! We anticipate that more travelers will dive into these experiences in 2024 and beyond.

Here are the growing niche travel locations trending in 2024:

  • Adventure Travel : Are you an adrenaline junkie who loves testing your limits? Adventure travel is perfect for thrill-seekers who are up for anything. From white water rafting in Costa Rica to scaling Everest in Nepal, there are plenty of amazing opportunities for those with a taste for adventure. Whether it be climbing mountains or bungee jumping off bridges, adventure travel will push your boundaries and give you stories to last a lifetime.
  • Culinary Travel: Foodies rejoice—culinary travel is here! Culinary tourism is all about discovering the unique flavors that each culture has to offer. From Italy’s famous pizza and pasta dishes to Japan’s traditional ramen and sushi, there are plenty of delicious dishes around the world just waiting to be explored. The best part? Learning how these amazing dishes are made so you can recreate them at home, especially for the kids !

Niche Travel 2024

  • Educational Travel: Education doesn’t have to end after college—it can extend into your travels as well! Educational travel allows people to explore different cultures while also learning something new in the process. From language classes in Spain to wine-tasting courses in France, educational trips provide travelers with an opportunity to learn about different cultures while also enjoying themselves. Plus, it’s always nice to come home with some new skills and knowledge under your belt!
  • Eco-Travel : Eco-travel has become increasingly popular in recent years as more people realize that sustainable tourism is important for preserving natural habitats and wildlife species for future generations. By engaging in eco-travel, you will be able to explore pristine places while doing your part to protect them from destruction. It’s also an opportunity to learn about environmental conservation efforts as well as traditional cultures around the world.
  • Volunteer Vacations : Some people are looking for something more than just a relaxing holiday when they go on vacation—they want to make a difference. With volunteer vacations, travelers will have the chance to give back to communities around the world by taking part in projects ranging from building schools in developing countries to helping out at animal sanctuaries. Not only will this type of travel allow you to make meaningful connections with locals, but it can also be incredibly rewarding on a personal level.

Travel Trend for 2024: Pets Rule

After spending a considerable amount of time at home with your four-legged family members, you may not want to part with them on your next vacation.

It’s no secret that our pets are valued members of the family, and the travel industry is recognizing it. Hotels are going far above and beyond welcoming your furry companion with the requisite dog bed and bowl. Think canine-specific room-service menus, pet-friendly restaurant spaces, in-room massage, and reiki (for your dog, not you!).

Hotels, camping grounds and national parks are offering more and more options for travel with pets. If you’re looking for a beach holiday, explore Fraser Island in Australia – it’s known for its stunning sand dunes and fresh seafood. For a city break, why not try Amsterdam or Berlin? Both cities have plenty of pet-friendly accommodations as well as parks and outdoor spaces for your pet to safely roam.

If a road trip is more your style, consider driving down the East Coast of America from Maine to Florida – there’s no shortage of animal-friendly stops along this stretch of the country. Wherever you chose to go, travel with pets can be an incredibly rewarding experience!
